impression he was of a religious and charitable disposition, with a friendly feeling towards his fellow men. He left valuable gifts to his friends, but did not forget the poor and needy. The most relevant aspect of his will was his wish for what should happen to thirty acres of land that he had bought in and around the tiny village of Hammersmith.

We are at a very exciting time in the history of Latymer Upper School, and although we are looking to the future it is interesting to see where we have come from. Edward Latymer founded Latymer Upper School in 1624. He was the son of the Dean of Peterborough. He did not follow his father into the Church, but, in due course, became Clerk to the Court of Wards and Liveries under Dr William Cecil who, as Lord Burghley, was Queen Elizabeth 1st’s chief minister. Edward died in 1627, a man of substance, but childless. A careful reading of his will leaves the

Edward Latymer bequeathed the profits of this land for the education and clothing of eight poor boys, envisaging that these “Latymer boyes” would carry his name “unto the end of the world”. He instructed that the eight boys should learn to read and write English and be instructed “in some part in God’s true religion and thereby kept from idle and vagrant courses”. Those eight poor boys have now become boys AND girls. Other benefactors have added to the original Foundation, notably Isaac le Gooch (1628-1685), King’s Jeweller to Charles II, whose bequest added five more boys to the eight Latymer boys. In September 2017 the School launched the Inspiring Minds fundraising campaign to raise £40m by 2024 - the 400th anniversary of the foundation of the School by Edward Latymer. The funds will be used to provide means-tested bursaries to children who otherwise would be unable to come to Latymer Upper School.

Trips, excursions & tours

Each year many of your academic subjects arrange field trips as part of the work you will do in their course. You will also take part in Activities Week when all pupils take part in a week long activity, ranging from surfing in Cornwall to sailing in Scotland, with some overseas trips available too.

Clubs & societies; the library / 7

Clubs & societies

The library

There are a wide variety of activities available to you and we hope you will get as involved as you can. These include Art Club, Jewellery Club, Board Games, Chess Club, Computing and Debating. There are lots of sports options, and also Classics Club, Science Club, Language Club, Astronomy Club...the list goes on and on and is regularly updated on the School Intranet.

We have a wonderful library on the ground floor of the Science Building which you can use before school from 8am, at break times, lunchtime and after school until 6pm. You will be given an introductory talk about the library and its facilities shortly after you join the school. You can use it to do homework or for research.

“Fellow students of Latymer. Welcome! It may seem scary to be joining such a big school, but we all felt that way when we joined. A good way to have fun and make friends is to join one of our many clubs. If there aren’t any that you want to join, then maybe try to start up a new one, with the help of one of our very talented Sixth Formers. Join as many as possible, so you can make lots of new friends!”

“A school library - automatically we think of a cold room stacked with mountains of old books and an evil librarian wearing a monocle - I can assure you that the Latymer library isn’t anything like this. It is a place to ask for reading recommendations from our (far from evil) librarians, do homework, choose from over a gazillion books and participate in fun events such as quizzes, competitions and book voting campaigns. A common worry is not returning books on time. Books are borrowed for two weeks, (you can borrow more than one at a time) but if you need more time to finish, you can always extend the time. If you forget to return it, don’t fret, you won’t get eaten. You’ll be sent a kind email reminding you and giving you one or two days ‘grace’. So come along, the library awaits you…”

8 / School planner

Years 7, 8 and 9 school planner At the beginning of the year you will be given a planner by your Form Tutor. In this you should note down your homework and the date it is due in. If you need a replacement planner these are available from the School Office (Pg 9). The cost of the new planner is ÂŁ4 and this will be added to your termly fee bill. The planner is there to help you organise yourself as you will find that you have lots of different, new things to remember including extra-curricular activities. The planner can be used to remind you of other things such as Music appointments, clubs and matches. Your Form Tutor will help you organise it, and they will check it regularly. Use it like a diary.

Lost property; bike shed access; the school office / 9

Lost property

Bike shed access

It is very important that you name all of your possessions so that if you lose them, they can be quickly returned to you. All clothing should be clearly marked, as should pens, calculators, books and watches.

If you are going to bring a bike into school then you will need a pass to gain access to the bike sheds. Please email Mrs Lindsey Smith in the School Office at lss@latymer-upper.org giving your name and Form Tutor. Your Form Tutor will give you the pass on your first day.

If you do not name your possessions it is very difficult for us to get them back to you. There is a lost property room which is often full of lost kit and belongings – if you lose something you must check there first. This room is located next to the school nurse’s office in the Art Centre. It is open Monday to Friday 4 – 4.20 pm. Remember to lock your possessions away in your locker for safe keeping.

The School Office The School Office serves many functions, but the important ones for you are that it deals with problems such as early lunch access and timetables. It will also lend you small sums of money in the event of an emergency. These loans have to be repaid on the next school day. Any loans not repaid by the end of term will be added to the fee bill. The School Office is located in York House near the school shop.

12 / What should I do if...

Your Form Tutor will help you with many problems but “what should I do if ...“ I need an early lunch? Go to the School Office.

I feel unwell? Report to the nurse.

I need to telephone home? Ask a teacher. I am feeling unhappy or unsure? Speak to your Form Tutor.

I am late for School? Report to the Attendance office.

I’ve lost my timetable? Go to the School Office.

I’ve lost my belongings? Report to your Form Tutor and go to Lost Property. I want a new pencil/pen/ruler? Go to the school shop. I leave my kit at Wood Lane? See the teacher-in-charge at Wood Lane/ Head of PE. I need to borrow money to get home? Ask the School Office. I need permission to be absent from school? Your parent needs to ask permission from the Head by sending a request in writing via the Parent Portal. I forget my packed lunch? Report to your Form Tutor.

Remember: No one in school has the right to make your life unhappy. This can happen if people try to push you around OR say unkind things to you. Don’t put up with it. Talk to your Form Tutor, another teacher or your parents. We do not tolerate bullying at Latymer and we try to create a culture in which you feel safe and happy. Latymer is a friendly school and every opportunity is taken to promote positive friendships between peer groups, year groups and divisions. Every person at Latymer Upper School should be treated with respect.

Sport / 13

Sport

As well as your academic subjects, you will have one period of Physical Education each week and one afternoon of Games. PE is held in the school Sports Centre or the swimming pool. Games is held at different venues, including our Wood Lane playing fields and the University of Westminster sports ground in Chiswick. You will be taken and returned to school by coach. Boys play rugby in the Autumn Term and football in the Spring Term. Girls play hockey in the Autumn Term and netball in the Spring Term. In the Summer Term boys and girls can choose from athletics or cricket, and girls can also play rounders. There are at least A to D teams in each

of the major sports, so lots of pupils are able to represent the school. If you are chosen for a team, it is very important that you can attend all Saturday mornings and after school fixtures. You should therefore make sure that your Saturdays are kept free. If you are selected but not able to play on a particular date for an exceptional reason, then your parents must seek permission for your absence by emailing the relevant teacher at least two weeks in advance. There are other sports open to you as out-of-school activities, sometimes before school, at lunchtime and also after school. These include swimming, table tennis, squash, badminton and basketball. There are also regular training sessions for all sports. All information is on the School Intranet.

14 / Music, homework & absence

Music

Homework

At Latymer the range of Music is huge and exciting. There are boys’ choirs and girls’ choirs and also the Chamber Choir. You can also - depending on your ability - join one of the many orchestras, bands and groups. These include the Latymer Orchestra, the String Group, the Concert Band, the Wind Band, Brass Group and the Jazz Band. You can have private Music lessons on a wide range of musical instruments and take part in musical theatre via the Drama Department.

Within the first few days of arriving at Latymer you will be given a homework timetable. Each evening you will be expected to do homework in two or three subjects, lasting about one hour in total per night. You should use your planners to record details of homework. Your teachers will also set your homework tasks on Google Classroom. As you progress up the School the amount of time you are expected to spend on homework increases.

The administrator for the Music Department can be contacted at music@latymer-upper.org if you have any questions about private music lessons or extra-curricular music.

Catching up through absence If you are absent from school, the responsibility for catching up on missed work lies, primarily, with you. If you know in advance you are going to be absent, you should contact the relevant teachers to see if there is any work they can give you. If you are ill for a day, the most sensible way of catching up is to copy any notes from a friend and see your teachers to ask for any missed handouts when you return. Google Classroom is also a useful place to find lesson resources, presentations and notes, and you should check for missed school work.

If this proves problematic, or you are absent for a longer period of time, you should talk to your Form Tutor who will advise you and help with support if needed. The AMD department can also help with catching up by providing you with some 1:1 help through their Academic Mentoring system. Academic Mentors are students, usually in Y11 and above, who provide free tuition and support in named subjects. You can access this by talking to your tutor or by emailing: amdadmin@latymer-upper.org

The school shop / 15

The school shop The school shop is on the ground floor of York House and has a wide range of school uniform, games kit and stationery items. During term time the shop hours are: Monday: 11am - 4.30pm Tuesday: 11am – 2.15pm Wednesday: 8am – 2.15pm Thursday: 11am – 2.15pm Friday: 11am – 2.15pm Appointments need to be made during the summer holidays. For appointments: 020 8687 1502 For all enquiries: 020 8741 4341 Email: spsschoolshops@yahoo.com Parents may pay for items in person or make arrangements for payment by telephone. Alternatively they can open an account and the items will be charged on your termly bill.

The dining hall

We offer breakfast to pupils between 7.55 and 8.15am. There is a healthy selection of fruit, yoghurt, cereals, toast and juice. The cost is ÂŁ1.70 per day, recorded via the biometric scanners and will be added to the next termly bill. If you have school lunch, you will go to the dining hall at the time allocated for your year. Lunches offer a wide selection of dishes including vegetarian options and a daily salad bar. If you bring your own lunch you must eat it in the dining hall or in the playground. You must not eat food in your classroom. Hot and cold snacks, pastries and baguettes can be purchased and eaten in the Atrium cafĂŠ.

The Medical Centre & absences; technology / 17

The Medical Centre & absences If you are feeling unwell, go to the Medical Centre, which is located in the Arts Centre. DO NOT CALL YOUR PARENTS, instead talk to one of the school nurses or a member of staff. The school nurses will take care of you and will contact your parents if necessary.

If the nurses are not in their office then go to Reception where they will call them for you. If you have to go to the nurse between lessons, make sure to tell one of your friends so that the subject teacher knows where you are. Never go straight home without first seeing the nurse and getting permission. The school nurses are Yvette Bynoe and Hannah Coveney and you can email them at: nurse@latymer-upper.org.

When you are absent from school through illness, ask your parents to go to the Parent Portal and fill in the absence form. Alternatively they can email us at: absence@latymer-upper.org. The Attendance Officer is Gill Dawson and she is located in E Block. If your parents need to request a leave of absence in advance that is not for a medical appointment then they will need to contact the Head through his PA, Mrs Tobi Clifton-Brown. The email address is head@latymer-upper.org.

Technology Latymer Upper School does not allow personal mobile devices to be used during the school day. You will need to ensure that your mobile phone is switched off and placed in your locker from 8.25am until 4pm. If you are caught with your mobile phone during this time period you will have it confiscated and face a sanction. All Y7 students are issued with a Chromebook on their first day to be used in lessons. You will have a special charging locker in your form room and your Chromebook should be placed into this and plugged in at the end of the school day. You are not allowed to take your Chromebook home with you in Y7. You will have full instruction on how to setup and use your Chromebook when you start in September.

The IT Helpdesk should be the first point of call for all your IT requests, such as forgotten passwords, help with accessing the school wi-fi, or configuring emails on your personal devices. We can also, if you forget, reset the PIN to your individual Chromebook and your locker in your form room. We are located on the 1st floor of the Arts Centre, and open from 8am to 5pm weekdays, and 9am to 5pm weekdays during the holidays. You can also contact us by email: helpdesk@latymer-upper.org

18 /Lower School code of conduct

Lower School code of conduct Welcome to the Lower School! We hope that the two years you spend with us in the Lower School will be a happy and fruitful time for you. In order to ensure that all students have a positive experience we have some beliefs about what we should and shouldn’t do, that we ask you to respect. 1. Respect the people that you come into contact with. This includes teachers, support staff and anyone who you meet around the School. Remember, respect is a two way street, if you want it yourself, you first must show it to others. 2. Be polite. Manners cost nothing but make a world of difference. Say please and thank you and think about what you can do to help others around you. Be punctual to lessons and appointments. Time is a precious commodity so don’t waste yours or other people’s. 3. Look after the environment around you. Treat the classrooms and their contents in the same way as you would treat the things in your house. When things get broken, it costs money to replace them, that could be better spent elsewhere. Think about the people who come in at the end of the day to clean up after us and don’t add to their work unnecessarily. 4. Do no harm to others. Never be physical with other students but also do not hurt them with your words. They can also cause bruises, it’s just that they are not as visible. Don’t exclude others or try to isolate them in the real world or online and don’t spread rumours. 5. Be careful what you post online. The internet lasts forever and it is very difficult to control. Don’t post things online that you wouldn’t be prepared to say to someone’s face, or if you think it would be difficult to explain to a parent or teacher. Remember most universities and employers now carry out digital checks. THINK 6. Be present. Chromebooks are not there to replace human contact so don’t use them in your form rooms during lunch or break. Talk to each other instead!

7. You worked hard to get into Latymer so wear your uniform with pride. It represents our community and who we are. Adhere to the uniform regulations and aim to look as smart as you can. 8. Two words that have no place in the Lower School are “banter” or “snitch”. These are words that are used to excuse bad behaviour and allow others to keep getting away with it. If you are being bullied or you know someone who is being bullied, tell someone. 9. If you or your friends are feeling down, sad or worried, don’t bottle it up. Talk to your Form Tutor, a Peer Mentor, your Head of Year, a school counsellor, the nurse or to Mrs Sellars. A problem shared is a problem halved and there are lots of people who will be happy to help.
10. Respect the property of others. Do not move or tamper with their belongings even as a joke.

Comments from our Year 7 / 19

Comments from our Year 7 We want you to feel welcome at Latymer. Here are some messages to you from some pupils:

“Secondary School is actually more fun because of all the facilities (library, sports hall, pool etc) and interesting teachers/ subjects…You are treated like an adult (at least more than before) plus you get the chance to do some more interesting stuff. The clubs are amazing! People say senior school is difficult and hard to get used to but it isn’t really!!” “Latymer is great. Everyone is friendly and it is very easy to make friends. Have a great time!”

“Latymer is a really great school and it is really fun. I’ve made lots of friends here and you will too! It’s got loads of clubs, sports teams, instruments to play and free time to hang out, study, do homework and just socialise.” “Latymer is a fantastic school. I was a little nervous on my first day but all the staff and Sixth Formers made me feel so welcome. On your first day you should be confident and just go up to people and say HI! Then you will know someone straight away.”

“I was so excited to start my new school and to discover new subjects like Computer Coding and Design Technology. My first day nerves were soon forgotten once I was experimenting with a bunsen burner in the science lab. Year 7 Pupil
