The Latymer Foundation at Hammersmith was established in 1624 ‘to clothe and educate eight poore boyes’ in Hammersmith. It remains true to the vision of its founder Edward Latymer to this day, offering a first class education to academically able students from all walks of life.
Inspiring Minds campaign aims
We want to double our current bursary funding, providing a life-transforming Latymer education for more children.
Inspiring Minds culminates in 2024, the 400th anniversary of the Latymer Foundation.
The Inspiring Minds campaign aims to raise £40m to fund bursaries for as many as 1 in 4 of our pupils.
The only criteria for entry to Latymer should be ability and potential.
The Inspiring Minds campaign will help to make that a reality.
Letter from the Head
This September the Latymer Foundation will be providing bursaries for nearly 200 children across the School of whom joined Year 7 this term.
Much has happened since 2014, when the idea of Inspiring Minds was first mooted. We are now halfway through our most ambitious ever fundraising campaign – with five years under our belt we have another five to go before our 400th anniversary in 2024. As we hit the halfway mark, I felt it apposite to reflect on our progress.
The outlook is extremely positive. With your generous support, we have raised a staggering £26m – over half our target of £40m. In the last year alone, you have been instrumental in helping us raise £5m for Inspiring Minds, part of which will go to bolster our endowment and part will fund current bursaries.
It’s an impressive figure. And the numbers for bursary pupils’ applications and admissions are just as encouraging: of the 1,400 children who applied at 11+ for entry to Latymer this September, 390 were bursary applicants – a rise of 33% on last year. If we look at 16+ entries for this academic year, 1 in 3 of the 39 new pupils joining our existing Sixth Form are able to do so thanks to the bursaries you have helped provide.
The Campaign really is having an impact on families with talented children who have the potential to become outstanding Latymerians, but who can’t afford school fees. We have come a long way in our ambition of offering a life-changing education to children, regardless of their financial background. Five years ago we funded bursaries for 120 pupils, 18 of whom joined us in Year 7. This September the Latymer Foundation is providing bursaries for nearly 200 children across the School – 33 of whom entered in Year 7 this term (which equates to 1 in 5 of the year group).
Our Campaign is also having an impact on other schools, who have been inspired to learn from and follow our example. Since we launched Inspiring Minds, a number of major schools in London and elsewhere have announced ambitious bursary campaigns that echo our themes and targets. We are proud that our leadership in this area is not only making it possible for even more disadvantaged children to access the benefits of an independent education, but also that it has been recognised by prestigious national awards.
Without doubt we have reason to celebrate the greatly increased number of young people who are now part of our school community because of the amazing outpouring of support for the first half of our campaign. This makes me all the more determined to power through the second half, and to overcome the challenges that we will undoubtedly encounter, till we reach our goal. In order to do this, I ask everyone connected to Latymer to give what they can.
Your contribution is valued enormously by everyone at Latymer and especially the many children whose lives you are benefiting and whose potential you are helping to fulfil. In helping us to provide more bursaries, you are enhancing the educational experience of all our pupils – both fee-paying and bursary holders alike.
As we embark on the second half of Inspiring Minds, edging ever nearer to the home straight, I would like to thank you for helping us stay true to the ethos of our founder, Edward Latymer, nearly 400 years after he created this very special learning institution. Beyond the facts and figures of the campaign, the human stories of our bursary pupils continue to inspire.

Our fundraising journey to £40m
£26 million
With five years to go, the Campaign has raised from enthusiastic supporters across the Latymer community.
The official start of Inspiring Minds – the Campaign embraces all philanthropic support for the Foundation with the primary aim to increase bursary provision, both now and for generations to come. Of the 123 bursary pupils, 86 received in excess of 90% fee remission.
Enthusiastic early support of the Campaign encourages us to set the ambitious, yet hopefully achievable, target of £40m. The number of contributors to our annual Bursaries Appeal breaks the 1,000 mark. Of the 130 bursary pupils, 86 received in excess of 90% fee remission.
Support begins to gain momentum with significant cornerstone donations made to the Campaign. The Bursaries Appeal raises a record £486,000. Of the 141 bursary pupils, 101 received in excess of 90% fee remission.
The Inspiring Minds campaign is publicly launched with events across the whole School community. Our studentled fundraising club RAIS£ contributes a remarkable £17,952.72 through events, activities and merchandise. The Inspiring Minds Gala Dinner raises £2.1m for the endowment. Of the 154 bursary pupils, 100 received in excess of 90% fee remission.
The Campaign continues to gain momentum with a record number of 29 events and everincreasing participation across the Latymer community. The Great Latymer Dinner Party Weekend raises an astonishing £26,070 with staff, parents and many others taking part. Of the 176 bursary pupils, 113 received in excess of 90% fee remission.
Thank you!
I believe that fundraising at an educational establishment allows the institution to dream bigger and aim higher than would otherwise be possible. This has undoubtedly been the case at Latymer as we can see by our wonderful facilities and the fact that some 195 students will be attending Latymer this academic year thanks to a significant bursary. Every donor who offers a gift to Latymer knows that 100% of the amount they give will go directly to the area of school life which they want to help improve. Donors can choose what form their support will take – be it for bursary provision, individual departments or school facilities and infrastructure – and we take great care to keep donors informed as to the lasting impact of their gift.
I would like to thank every single person who has supported our Inspiring Minds campaign so far. You are helping us to make Latymer the very best version of itself and, in so doing, to transform the lives of generations of young people.
What is remarkable, and particularly heartwarming, is the fact that the Latymer Foundation is supported by individuals from across our whole School community. Our aim to ensure that the only criteria for admission to Latymer should be ability and potential resonates as much with our former pupils and their families as it does with current Latymerians and their families, and with our staff.
RAIS£ is the student-led club which organises events to raise money for bursaries. The club includes students from every year group who brainstorm ideas in support of both the Prep Bursary Fund and the Upper School Bursaries Appeal. Their activities this year have included selling Latymer branded water bottles and sweatshirts, Founder’s Day wristbands, cake sales, a Prep triathlon and a film night.
Not to be outdone, our staff are very proud to work in an independent school that is doing so much to widen access to the first-rate education it offers, and they often come up to the Foundation Office with an idea for a fundraising initiative. Sometimes this takes the form of a group sponsorship activity like the Ealing Half Marathon or sometimes it is a solo effort like the challenge Adam Widawski, staff member, set himself to run this year’s London Marathon in aid of the 2018/19 Bursaries Appeal.
Our former pupils and their parents show their support for the Campaign by attending and hosting events, by volunteering to help the Foundation Office and, of course, through their invaluable financial support. Many older Latymerians studied here thanks to a Direct Grant scholarship or an Assisted Place and they consider that it is only right to help the current generation to get the same outstanding start in life that they received at Latymer, irrespective of their family’s means.
In addition, we are lucky to have an incredibly supportive parent community who regard the social mix of the student body as one of the most important ingredients that makes Latymer such a special school. The high quality of teachers, the excellent facilities, the breadth and depth of the curriculum are all key attractions to prospective parents, but the opportunity to study alongside academically ambitious children from a wide range of backgrounds is of equal value. As a result, the parent community has enthusiastically embraced our Inspiring Minds campaign and given it their wholehearted support.
In 2018, I was delighted to receive the ‘Schools Engagement Award’ from CASE Europe, the global body that represents professionals working in the fields of alumni relations, communications, development, marketing and advancement services. This was public acknowledgement of something I already knew, something that is very special to Latymer – the fact that our whole School community is actively engaged in ensuring that we can
achieve the aim set out by David Goodhew at the launch of Inspiring Minds: that ability and potential should be the only criteria for admission to Latymer.
I remain indebted to the thousands of members of the Latymer community who have helped to raise more than £26million in the early years of the Campaign. With your continued support, we will achieve our aim of raising £40 million by 2024 to fund bursaries for 1 in 4 of our pupils, and Latymer’s position as one of the most socially inclusive independent schools in the country will be secured.

Inspiring partnerships
Spotlight on one of our partners: Generating Genius
There is evidence that too many bright young people from disadvantaged backgrounds are not stretched and challenged in their schools. Generating Genius is an educational charity that aims to inspire, motivate and support these young people who are underrepresented in higher education and particularly in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM). This includes young people from the BAME community, and girls of any ethnic group – all are generally from low-income households and would be the first in their immediate family to go to university.
Since 2017 Latymer Upper School has been proud to partner with Generating Genius, helping their students develop the important skills of communication, problem-solving and independent thinking. Various courses are run at Latymer through our partnership with Generating Genius: debating skills for Junior Genius students (Year 10), Bright Sparks on Saturdays for Year 5 pupils and coding club for both Junior Genius and Bright Sparks.
Junior Genius Debating Course
30 young people came to Latymer for a full day of debating. The course was taught by senior teaching staff from the School along with talented debaters from our Years 10 and 13, who participate alongside the Junior Genius cohort. The students debated a range of subjects, including whether to scrap government funding for arts and culture, and whether it should be mandatory for the boards of publicly listed companies to be 50% female.
I really enjoyed the building and coding and discovered how much trial and error is involved!
Coding Course
When I try to describe the essence of Generating Genius, our debating day really captures it. We all got so much from the day and we added serious value to the lives of those young people.
TONY SEWELL CEO Generating Genius
The progress was astonishing. Within eight hours, from a standing start, most of the kids could have been very competitive in Oxford Schools Finals debates with top schools. They really are special kids.
JONNY WHITE Latymer Head of History and leader of Junior Debating
This course ran for four days over May half term and was for Year 5 pupils attending Bright Sparks, and Year 10 students from Junior Genius. The attendees were taught different coding languages, building games and robots using their new-found skills.
Our children benefit enormously from these outreach projects. They enhance and support their learning. They also give them experiences that may not be on offer to them within the school. Our children who have attended these projects have not only gained academically but also we have seen an increase in their confidence and creativity.
MICHAEL SCHUMM Headteacher
St Stephen’s CE Primary School
Bright Sparks
Bright Sparks invites the brightest Year 5s from local primary schools and gives them a six-week Saturday School experience developing their Maths, English and Science skills. It also gives them a taste of how they will apply these skills to secondary school learning. Bright Sparks aims to spread the word about means-tested bursaries and identify children who show exceptional academic potential and encourages these pupils and their parents to apply for bursaries at Latymer and other independent schools.
This programme ran for the first time in 2017, and so far seven children who attended Bright Sparks have gained entry to Latymer Upper School. Due to the resounding success of the programme, and the desire on the part of both Latymer and Generating Genius to expand it, funding for Bright Sparks for the next five years has been secured thanks to a former Latymer parent.
The experience was eye opening and helped me build my confidence.
Legacies: Inspiring the future
Laurie Elliott Bursary
In 1939 Laurie Elliott MA FRGS joined the teaching staff at Latymer after graduating from St Edmund Hall, Oxford. During the Second World War, he was a navigator in De Havilland Mosquitoes with Bomber Command and subsequently returned to his post at Latymer. In 1955 he became Head of Geography organising many field trips and educational cruises to the West Indies and West Africa. In addition, he was a Chief Examiner for A Level Geography, was actively involved with the Royal Geographical Society and the Institute of British Geographers, and wrote the textbook ‘Climate and Man’. He retired from teaching in 1984 but continued his close relationship with the School by becoming a founding member of the 1624 Society and attending many class reunions. Laurie passed away in 2011 and in his will he left a sum of money specifically to endow a means-tested bursary in his name.
The first recipient of this bursary is currently in the Sixth Form and he says: “Without the brilliant opportunity provided by the Laurie Elliott Bursary to be a part of such a unique and inspiring school I would never have had these chances. Being at Latymer has taught me to think critically, but also to try and make a difference in the world around us and for that, I am extremely grateful.”
Geography was Laurie’s lifelong passion and he also left money to fund an annual travel award for a Latymerian studying Geography at A Level or at university. Several Latymerians have already benefitted from this award taking them as far afield as Madagascar, Iceland, Tanzania and the Outer Hebrides.
The 1624 Society
was created to recognise those who have made provision for the Latymer Foundation in their will. Legacies play a key role in building our endowment and help us to protect our founder’s legacy for future generations of Latymerians. The Society is made up of Latymerians, former teachers and many others from across the Latymer community.
Latymer
awarded me a scholarship, without which my parents could never have afforded to send me there. I remember friendship with others and between staff and pupils, but above all else the intellectual stimuli. Latymer did not merely change my life, it made it. I hope my legacy does the same for others.
PROFESSOR DENNIS GREEN (1939)
Albert Pryce Bursary
Albert Walter Henry Pryce (1946) spent most of his career as an industrial chemist with BP and also served in the Australian army reserve for 30 years. Albert was an avid member of the Royal Australian Institute of Chemistry and sat on Latymer’s Australian Alumni Council. The son of an Air Raid Precautions (ARP) warden, Albert received a London County Council Scholarship which funded his education at Latymer in the 1940s and in return he wanted to leave a bequest “comparable with the scholarship I was privileged to receive”. Albert’s widow Dorothy remains in close contact with the School, always keeping up to date on those who have benefitted from Albert’s bequest, and is now a member of the 1624 Society in her own right.
Bei Guo (2014), the first recipient of the Albert Pryce Bursary, is currently in his final year at Goldsmiths studying History of Art (BA). On leaving Latymer, Bei wrote: “The Albert Pryce Bursary has given me opportunities that I would otherwise not have had, and allowed me to explore the subjects that interest me to a high level. I have enjoyed my time at the School, and made some very good friends.”
Bei’s mother, said: “We are so grateful that Bei was chosen to benefit in this way: it is really a gift for life that he values very much.”
Bursary recipient stories
Sulayman Hussain (2019)
After hearing the Head’s speech on Open Day, Sulayman was inspired to apply to Latymer; the idea of developing “intellectual curiosity” in a school buzzing with interesting lessons, an excellent jazz band and dramatic opportunities excited him. Studying Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry, Sulayman also went to the Edinburgh Festival to perform in Made in Dagenham. He has a place on the Rolls Royce internship scheme in Bristol in his gap year.
Liam James (2020)
Now in the Upper Sixth, Liam is determined to give back to the bursary programme in the future. He has enjoyed the breadth of academic and extra-curricular experiences the school has offered him and, one day, would love to study or work in the US, the country of his birth.
Nkenna Ibeakanna (2011)
Nkenna was “ridiculously excited” about attending the sixth form open evening and “overwhelmed” by the possibilities available to her. She loved being in a place “where the diversity that abounds from intellectual freedom is celebrated” and went on to study at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire. Whilst in the US, Nkenna served on the US Friends of Latymer Board, raising funds for other students to come here. She has just been awarded one of two places on Brown University’s Playwriting MFA course.
Latymer has been like a portal, a way to a new perspective. My classmates show me how to combine diligence with verve and their passion about everything from dance to aerofoils means I am being stimulated and awed on a daily basis. Attending Latymer, I am imbued with a dream to work in cutting-edge materials. I am on my way to realising this dream. Latymer life is so rich and varied; I hope the privilege of studying here can continue to be extended to everyone, regardless of their background.
I have felt very honoured and quite special to be a bursary recipient. Everyone feels welcome here and fully integrated. My bursary has allowed me to enjoy this amazing school. One day I would like to help to give others the advantage I have enjoyed.
Without the bursary I received, my aspirations would not have been realised, and I wouldn’t be the person I am today. Latymer invoked ambition within me and a greater sense of pride in my abilities. The love of learning is prevalent, it is in the air and everyone benefits from it. Before I came here, I would not have imagined my life to be what it is now: the people I have met, the experiences I have had, the ways I have learnt and grown... I will always feel fortunate to be an alumna of Latymer Upper School.
Upper School Bursaries Appeal
The Bursaries Appeal is an annual appeal which aims to raise enough to fund five new bursaries each year. The majority of gifts to the appeal are relatively small, however thanks to the sheer number of gifts from all across our school community, their impact is significant. Since the start of the campaign, over £2,299,404 has been donated to the Bursaries Appeal by 3,006 donors, illustrating the phenomenal power of collective giving.
In the last academic year, we hosted a record number of fundraising events.
Life, love, death and atomic physics
The Head gave the first Inspiring Conversations lecture of the year on the poetry and philosophy of Lucretius.
The Great Latymer Dinner Party
In November, we held the Great Latymer Dinner Party weekend, which raised in excess of £26,070. Thirty individual dinner parties were held by members of the Latymer community. Over 200 people attended a dinner party, including 28 members of staff.
2Bridges Run
In February, 162 runners participated in the 2Bridges Run, which this year included a shorter additional race for Prep students at the same time. In total £4,924 was raised for the Bursaries Appeal and £2,983 for the Prep Bursary Fund, thanks to the support of generous sponsors. First place was won by Graham Proud (1991).
Fundraising Launch Party
The start of the School year is the launch of our annual fundraising activity, and in September 2018 we held a drinks reception attended by members of the Latymer community to mark the occasion and celebrate progress so far.
Tour of the Imperial War Museum
Bespoke museum tours are a popular feature of our events programme. In March, Taylor Downing (1971) once again shared his expertise by leading a tour of the Imperial War Museum, raising £990 for the Bursaries Appeal.
Prep Bursary Fund and RAIS£
RAIS£ is unlike any other school club I have been involved with. The passion and commitment of the students from all year groups working together to raise money to enable other children to have access to the same education that they enjoy is humbling to witness. Being part of RAIS£ reminds me every day how amazing our students can be and how, in their own small way, they are trying to make the world a better and more equal place.

Prep Bursary Fundd
Year 3
The Prep Bursary Fund aims to provide dedicated financial support for at least one child entering Year 3 each year, a child who would otherwise be unable to take up their hardwon place at the Prep because of their family’s financial circumstances. So far this annual appeal has funded five bursaries.
RAIS£
RAIS£ is the student-led extra-curricular club, which raises funds for the Inspiring Minds campaign through events and by selling a range of merchandise which is designed by the members. The club currently has 30 students very actively involved. Last year the club raised £18,601.
Christmas Fair
The Christmas Fair was the perfect opportunity to sell RAIS£’s merchandise. Both the Latymer branded Chilly’s water bottles and Latymer sweatshirts were popular, and over £1,000 was raised on the day.
Prep Triathlon
In June, the first ever Prep Triathlon was held, with 169 students aged 7-11 participating in back-to-back swimming, running and cycling sessions. In doing so, they raised £13,023 for the Prep Bursary Fund, and were rewarded with house points.
The Romance of the Violin
World renowned violinist, Ayako Yoshida and her husband Adonis Alvanis, parents of two Prep pupils, performed along with their pianist, Peter Roper-Curzon, in May. Once again, this concert sold out months in advance.
University Challenge
RAIS£ held Latymer’s first University Challenge style quiz which saw the Sixth Form team claim victory over the teachers.

All of us at the Latymer Foundation would like to extend our warmest thanks to those who have contributed to the Inspiring Minds campaign in any way since its inception in 2014. We are especially grateful to our generous donors, some of whom are named below, and others who wish to remain anonymous (and of course those who made contributions after we went to print). We try our utmost to include everyone in this list; please do tell us if we have omitted your name (for which many apologies), and we’ll make sure you are included next year.

I cannot put into words my gratitude and no action could repay the debt I owe you for genuinely changing the course of my life and allowing a simple boy, a second-generation immigrant raised by a single mother from a humble background, to enjoy an experience worthy of kings. I will never forget what you have done for my family and I am running out of words to describe how appreciative I am for everything you have done for me.
