LATITUDES was born of a desire to produce a fair together with galleries, artists, curators, collectors, and art lovers who identify as being connected to Africa and its diasporas. The fair is a conversation between these entities, each of which plays a vital role in the art market today.

Though small by the standards of international art fairs, LATITUDES boasts an ambitious curated programme of featured artists, exhibitions, audience development, children’s activities, critical talks, walkabouts, film screenings and international exchange. This programme was conceived in dialogue with galleries, artists and curators and offers something for everyone. This is because we believe that art is for everyone. It means vastly different things to different people, and everyone should have the opportunity to access art in a way that is meaningful to them.

We hope that LATITUDES 2019 is a moment for you to discover, take stock of, or simply enjoy what art means to you.

This doesn’t mean that LATITUDES seeks out relationships with the global art centres of Europe and America. Nor does it mean that we seek out international visibility as a validating vector. Today the international moves beyond postcolonial narratives of relation, in which the ability of African art to relate globally has primarily been expressed as a revisionist history European custodianship. Today there are more diverse trans-geographic connections available, and more complex routes of influence and exchange. The international is networked, in flux, and always already there.

This is our context, an exciting one for a new art fair that aims to cultivate new audiences for contemporary art. At the same time LATITUDES Art Fair is born into a precarious context. The fair emerges at a time when many people, both within and outside of the professional contemporary art sector, are questioning the value that art fairs add to the market in general. They are costly for participating galleries, and, because of their sheer quantity, don’t offer the kind of visibility they once did, when their was less competition for the attention of collectors and institutions. Since the year 2000, the number of art fairs internationally has grown from 55 to over 260, according to the 2018 Art Basel and UBS Art Market Report. At the same time galleries are more skeptical than ever about the importance of art fairs to the market and their role in growing collector bases. In a revealing two-part article by Andrew Goldstein for Artnet.com, José Freire, the owner of Team Gallery in Los Angeles, explains at length no longer seeing any redemption in the art fair model other than for the proprietors of the few mega-galleries that dominate fairs such as Art Basel and Frieze.

Freire decided to “quit” art fairs, seeing the expense galleries go to in order to participate in fairs as superfluous.

This hardly seems a genial context in which to start yet another fair. And yet fairs continue to emerge, particularly in places that once would have been considered the art world’s peripheries.

An art economy exists where this fatigue has not settled in, where galleries, audiences and collectors are even enthusiastic about the possibilities art fairs open up. To speak unilaterally about art fair fatigue is to adopt the hegemonic voice of a faraway market that has never given pride of place to art from Africa.

LATITUDES is different. It is a fair for African art, in Africa. And it is a fair built around different kinds of emergence: galleries on the continent that are growing, spaces that connect with African diasporas and that seek out an articulation in Africa, and artists whose careers are constantly in motion. Finally, it is a fair that respects that the business of buying and selling art in South Africa is complex, competitive and, above all, in need of change. LATITUDES sees the galleries and artists with whom we work as innovators working at the intersection of intellectual capital and commerce.

Their energy and ambition drive growth and change in this sector, and we believe that an art fair should respond to their motion rather than try to direct it. For

this reason, LATITUDES was created with our exhibitors foremost in mind. Various sections which you will find outlined in this catalogue organise a wealth of content that represents the best our exhibitors have to offer to art lovers, collectors and industry professionals alike. In this respect LATITUDES is an infrastructure, or a temporary home, for an enormous diversity of expressions and positions.

In a short time, the needs of our exhibitors helped the LATITUDES founding team shape a vision of an inclusive, progressive, high quality showcase that nurtures relationships between collectors, art lovers, galleries, curators and artists. Afriart Gallery KAMPALA, UGANDA

Afriart Gallery is a leading contemporary art gallery situated in Kampala Uganda. The artists represented by the gallery are responsible for the transformation of Uganda’s art landscape.

The gallery was founded in 2002 by art director Daudi Karungi. It focuses on the promotion of contemporary art from Uganda and the East African region as well as forging collaborations among artists in Africa and beyond.

The gallery artists have been featured in major international exhibitions, art auctions, Biennales, and Art Fairs.

Afriart gallery seeks to enrich the knowledge of its visitors about contemporary African art and provide the most varied selection for the enthusiastic art collector in the gallery’s permanent collection. Apart from exhibitions, Afriart has some exciting programs ranging from Art Education to art consultancy and public space design.

ARTCO AACHEN, GERMANY

Founded in 2003 by Jutta and Joachim Melchers, ARTCO evolved from an art agency into a gallery in 2005. Based in Aachen, Germany, ARTCO Gallery is situated close to Cologne, Dusseldorf, as well as bordering Belgium and the Netherlands.

In 2018 ARTCO opened a studio space in Cape Town, South Africa and in 2019 the gallery is also located in Berlin, Germany. ARTCO Gallery represents a selection of international artists who have particular interest in painting and photography. Its main focus is the presentation of already established and emerging talented artists with an African background. The gallery participates in a number of international fairs in Europe, the United States and South Africa, seeking to bring art from the continent to the widest possible audience. In addition to its program of solo shows and group exhibitions, ARTCO Gallery regularly publishes artist monographs and exhibition catalogues. ARTCO has been exhibiting at South African art fairs for the past ten years. The art market in this country is very well developed and remains the most important one on the continent.

Arte de Gema MAPUTO, MOZAMBIQUE

Founded in 2015, Arte de Gema gallery embraces the commitment to represent artists with different expressive varieties. The gallery has a special focus on valuing and promoting emerging artists.

One of the main objectives is to explore art from a global perspective and challenge emerging talent and established artists, through different curatorial concepts, to look conceptually and at the practical level into different approaches in the production, research and promotion of their artworks professional domains. Arte de Gema has held several exhibitions in Mozambique and abroad, with the first internationalization taking place in 2017 with the participation in the 1:54 Contemporary African Art Fair in London. In 2018, the gallery participated in the FNB Johanesburg Art Fair, and in 2019 in Arco Lisboa. Arte de Gema works with artists from different generations such as Ângela Ferreira, Djive, Gonçalo Mabunda, Félix Mula, Filipe Branquinho, Gemuce, Mauro Pinto, Mudaulane, Jorge Dias, Lourenço Pinto, Ídasse, Reinata, Rodrigo Mabunda, Victor Sousa, among others.

Dale Sargent Fine Art JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA

Dale Sargent Fine Art is a gallery, as well as an online platform, that offers a range of South African fine art.

The gallery has an extensive collection of artworks by established South African artists as well as works by emerging younger artists. Dale Sargent Fine Art has a gallery space in Parktown North in Johannesburg where visits are by appointment. The gallery offers onsite consulting and art sourcing for corporate and private clients.

David Krut Projects JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA

David Krut Projects (DKP) has various gallery and art based activities in Johannesburg at Arts on Main in the inner city, and on the Parkwood art strip in the northern suburbs.

The gallery, bookstore, book publishing, framing and education facilities have since expanded across Jan Smuts Avenue continuing to provide a collaborative arts facility at THE BLUE HOUSE at 151.

In 2002, David Krut Workshop (DKW) was established as a collaborative intaglio and monotype studio in Johannesburg. The DKW Workshop relocated to Arts on Main in 2009 and collaborates on fine art editions and unique works on paper with artists such as Deborah Bell, William Kentridge, Maja Maljević, Pebofatso Mokoena, Mongezi Ncaphayi, Nina Torr, Diane Victor and Stephen Hobbs amongst other local and international artists. The gallery exhibition program promotes works produced at DKW as well works by associated painters and sculptors, ultimately supporting artists in their careers.

EBONY/CURATED FRANSCHHOEK AND CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA

EBONY/CURATED was established in 2007 in Franschhoek and in 2011 a second gallery was opened in Loop Street, Cape Town.

The Cape Town space is dedicated to exhibiting a program of contemporary and modern African art representing a core group of emerging and established artists. These artists are either from the continent or have historic links to the greater African Diaspora. In 2017 a third gallery was opened in Franschhoek which focuses on both Contemporary Works and Masters from the continent. EBONY/CURATED has held a number of significant solo and group exhibitions and regularly participates in local and international art fairs.

First Floor Gallery Harare is Zimbabwe’s first contemporary emerging artist run gallery.

The gallery is dedicated to supporting the professional and career development of the new generation of contemporary Zimbabwean artists locally and internationally. The gallery is also dedicated to education and audience development to ensure a sustainable future for career artists. As of 2011, the gallery has also been developing an artist in residence programme bringing senior international artists and scholars to work and exhibit with the gallery and young artists in Harare.

Gallery Tiny NEW YORK CITY, USA

Gallery TINY is a dedicated project space for contemporary art of the Southern Hemisphere.

The project space seeks to act as a cultural mediator presenting works that are under-exposed in New York with particular focus on highlighting contemporary art practices of Africa, Australasia and South America. In doing so, Gallery TINY creates opportunities to engage diverse communities through art challenging preconceptions and stereotypes of those regions.

Guns & Rain JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA

Founded in 2014, Guns & Rain was one of Africa’s first online galleries, founded by Julie Taylor to address the under-representation of African art online and globally.

Guns & Rain now has a physical space in Johannesburg. The gallery works with contemporary emerging artists from six African countries, including South Africa, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Botswana, Mozambique and Nigeria, and has produced regular exhibitions in Johannesburg since 2015. Most of the artists engage with social and political subject matter, and many are concerned with identity politics. The name ‘Guns & Rain’ comes from the work of South African-born British anthropologist and playwright David Lan - who wrote about guerrillas and spirit mediums in Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle – for its reference to culture, identity, land, struggle change, and other important African themes that inform the curatorial focus and programme of the gallery.

Kalashnikovv Gallery JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA

The Kalashnikovv Gallery was established in 2013 by long term collaborators M.J Turpin and Matthew Dean Dowdle out of frustration with the current South African Contemporary Art world and by extension, the prevailing “white cube” gallery discourse.

They chose to create a hybrid space, bouncing to and fro between an independent artist run space, project space and commercial gallery space. Another key factor in the gallery’s inception was the decision not to compartmentalize creativity by showing art that is solely validated through academic practice and saleability. the Kalashnikovv ethos will forever champion the progressive alternative, the “outsider”, the artist as curator and the independent artist in all their creative guises and manifestations.

Their existence is an endeavor to change perceptions around art, to move the industry forward as a whole, to be a catalyst for change and to make art accessible for all. Kalashnikovv strives to create exhibitions and scenarios that will cause artists, curators and the public to question their own place in this ever evolving art world.

KZNSA Gallery DURBAN, SOUTH AFRICA

KZNSA is Durban’s leading contemporary gallery, an institution that transforms the local arts community through activating and incubating contemporary ideas, artists, and cultural production.

Situated in Glenwood, it is a creative hub for arts practitioners and audiences locally, and is recognized for its cutting edge exhibitions and arts education program nationally and internationally. KZNSA was founded in 1902 to support emerging artists in the province. It is a not-for-profit, public benefit organization with 18A status committed to the promotion of contemporary arts and linked to a network of national institutions that also promote and catalyse cultural change. KZNSA is a member-based society where members elect a governing body. The operations team oversees management of the gallery, shop, cafĂŠ and education program.

LL Editions (Legate Lithography Editions) is a contemporary lithographic studio and gallery based in Johannesburg.

The studio collaborates with both young and established artists from dissimilar backgrounds, in producing and publishing fine art lithographs.

LL Editions’ roles include handling the technical considerations such as processing the stones, setting the right inks and paper and editioning the original lithographs. This allows artists to focus on the creative, intuitive aspects of their projects with supervision from the workshop master printer.

The Artists’ Press WHITE RIVER, SOUTH AFRICA

The Artists’ Press is a small print studio dedicated to working with artists to make limited edition prints. Mark Attwood set up the press in 1991 after qualifying as a master printer at the Tamarind Institute (University of New Mexico, USA).

Since its inception, the press has grown steadily and today offers a variety of print processes to artists as well as publishing and selling original prints and artists books via its website and studio. In 2003 The Artists’ Press relocated to a farming area just outside of White River in Mpumalanga. In the purpose-built print studio, the press offers lithography, letterpress, mono printing and relief printing.

The Artists’ Press is dedicated to bringing you the finest limited edition original prints available in southern Africa. Our focus is on hand printed lithographs that are printed by master printers in collaboration with artists.

We use acid-free paper and the most light-fast inks available, taking the utmost care to ensure that the work is of the highest possible standard.

All editions are carefully curated and documented. Once editions have been printed and signed, the plate or stone is defaced thereby preserving the integrity of the edition.

This is Not a White Cube (TINAWC) is a contemporary art gallery focusing on the representation of contemporary African and diaspora artists through its annual exhibit program and participation in international art fairs.

The Mixed Reality Workshop has been established to make existing, immersive and interactive digital technology more broadly accessible to creative professionals in order to expand on their artistic practices and normalise complex technological thinking for audiences of contemporary art.

TMRW commissions and exhibits key new works by emerging and established artists and provides both educational programmes and the necessary forum for critical engagement with conceptual, political and ethical issues related to working across modalities of reality.

Warren Siebrits JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA

Warren Siebrits started his art career working at Stephan Welz and Company, Rosebank in 1988.

He worked as an assistant to Mr. Stephan Welz in the Painting and Prints department as well as assisting with Book Auction cataloguing.

He then went on to work for Trent Read at the newly opened Everard Read Contemporary in Rosebank in 1992, until the gallery’s closure in 1995. In 1996 Siebrits established Metroplex, a gallery operating from two shop windows in Rosebank. Exhibitions included Wopko Jensma, Robert Ryman, Andy Warhol, Neil Goedhals, Kendell Geers and Jeff Mills. During this time, Warren also worked as an art adviser for numerous Corporate and Government clients. These included the Gauteng Legislature, BHP Billiton, Vodacom, MTN and the Sandton Convention Centre. Shortly after completing the SCC collection he opened his own gallery, Warren Siebrits Modern and Contemporary Art in August 2002. In the following seven years, his gallery published 33 fully illustrated and researched catalogues, which provided context to each work and documented the exhibitions for future reference. In 2007 he curated Willem Boshoff’s Word Forms and Language Shapes, a mid-career retrospective at the Standard Bank Gallery and in 2016 the seminal exhibition, Walter Battiss “I invented myself” at the Wits Art Museum. He is currently working on William Kentridge’s prints and multiples catalogue raisonné.

Weekend Server BERGEN, NORWAY; ATHENS, GREECE; JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA

Weekend Server creates alternative contexts for the circulation of art. Collaborating with artists and other organisations to realize conditions of manifestation that do not yet exist in the established institutional landscape.

The structure of Weekend Server adjusts to the needs of the project, rather than forcing the project to adapt to a curatorial framework.

Colluding with other organisations, sometimes as host and sometimes as guest, often both at once. Weekend Server operates by creating an alternative context for circulation and facilitating the production of artworks that require conditions that do not yet exist in the established institutional landscape. The platform adjusts to the needs of the project rather than forcing the project to adapt to bureaucracy, reflecting the idealism and precariousness of artistic practice within its own structure.

Maja Maljevic

Kalashnikovv Gallery presents Maja Maljevic. Born in Belgrade in 1973 and based in Johannesburg, Maja Maljevic is a pioneering experimental painter whose explorations of abstraction, colour and material density distinguish her practice. Drawing on rich histories of painting and abstraction from Europe and Africa, Maljevic’s approach to painting combines intuitive exploration with a keen formalist sensibility.

John Muafangejo – Viva, Lino, Viva!

Warren Siebrits is proud to present an exhibition of 30 rare linocuts by renowned printmaker John Muafangejo (1943 – 1987) who is regarded internationally today as Angola’s most famous artist. Art historians have mistakenly referred to Muafangejo over the years as either Namibian or South African, when he is in fact Angolan-born. His family moved to South West Africa only in 1956, when Muafangejo was already a teenager. During the period 1967 to 1969, John Muafangejo received technical training at the Evangelical Lutheran Church Art and Craft Centre (ELC) at Rorke’s Drift in Natal, which provides his link to South Africa.Muafangejo’s work has a strong moral and philosophical content that was certainly influenced by his Kwanyaman traditional upbringing in southern Angola where he excelled in storytelling, exchanging proverbs and metaphors and solving riddles.

Essay brings together the work of two artists, one established and one emerging, who have not been widely acknowledged in South Africa to date.

Rather than a written essay, the juxtaposition of these artists and their work constitutes a visual and contextual “essay”, allowing the viewer to draw connections between them in different ways. For the inaugural edition of LATITUDES, Essay artists are struggle veteran, artist, poet, and academic Pitika Ntuli, and Durban- based early-career artist Sthenjwa Luthuli.

Born in Springs in 1942, Ntuli was detained in solitary confinement for a year under the apartheid regime before he moved to the United Kingdom in 1978, and then to the United States, where he pursued a Masters of Fine Arts at the Pratt Institute in New York. Ntuli’s transdisciplinary practice spans sculpture in a variety of media, monumental scale sculptural installations and poetry. Born in Botha’s Hill in 1991, Luthuli’s artistic journey began in his childhood and was brought to fruition through his arts education at the BAT Centre in Durban. His work is inspired by the importance of the circular form in African cultures.

Independent PRESENTED BY THE SOUTH AFRICAN MINT

This exhibition platform profiles artists who work independently, without traditional gallery representation.

Presented by the South African Mint, Independent 2019 takes the form of an exhibition titled Salt Form – an exploration of abstraction and inverted ways of seeing through photography, painting and sculpture. Works included on this show use humour, ‘plot twists’, and unexpected juxtapositions to challenge the viewer’s visual preconceptions, bringing into question a number of categories that are often taken for granted in relation to aesthetics. Taste is perhaps the most notable of these categories. Through experimenting with formal and thematic elements, the selection of artists often work at the margins of ‘good taste’, proposing that taste is a matter of acclimatisation rather than principle.

The Emerging Painting Invitational Prize (EPI) is an international platform developed by the Emerging African Art Galleries Association (EAAGA) to support and recognise excellence among emerging painters living and working in Africa, and to create new opportunities for engagement with art and art centres in Africa for local and international collectors, art professionals and general audiences.

Longitudes 2019

LATITUDES Limited is an annual limited edition print created by five African artists in collaboration with the fair.

Longitudes 2019 explores new contexts for north-south relations predicated on connections other than colonial heritage.

Online trans-geographic communities have dramatically changed the way people relate and connect with each other, professionally and socially, across cultural divides, and this is shifting the role regionality plays in culture. Longitudes 2019 traces artistic connections between South Africa and Norway along formalist, thematic, and narrative lines, bringing together the work of Africa-based and Norway-based artists in ways that foreground global politics and shared cultural literacy. The artists and platforms included as part of Longitudes 2019 are Bergen-based project space Weekend Server and artists Kobie Nel (ZA/NO), Annika Eriksson (SE/NO), Bjørn Mortensen (NO) and Magnhild Øen Nordahl (NO)

These artists were invited to collaborate with master printer, Jillian Ross and printer, Roxy Kaczmarek at David Krut Workshop to bring the first edition to life in the form of five original silkscreens. The David Krut Workshop (DKW) is the centre of David Krut Projects’ (DKP) artistic collaborations.

Led by Jillian Ross since 2004 and specialising in intaglio, relief and monotype printing, the workshop is based at Arts on Main in the Maboneng Precinct, Johannesburg.

Luxury vehicle custodian, DAYTONA collaborated with the very same artists from LATITUDES Limited 2019 to wrap five of their models including the McLaren 650S, McLaren 570S, Aston Martin Vanquish, Aston Martin N400 Vantage and Rolls-Royce Wraith Black Badge.
