ambling is not something I do a lot of. I like to play cards, but the most I’ve ever won is a quarter pound of cola bottle chews on holiday in my teens. I always take new visitors to town down to the pier and happily grab a mini bucket of tuppences to play on the slots. The thrill of seeing those coins teeter over the precipice, barely holding onto that neon key ring that looks so enticing and yet will be lost within five seconds of winning, is a joy to share. And from time to time I indulge in what I call ‘Schrödinger's Lottery Ticket’.

Schrödinger's Lottery Ticket follows the same principles as the more well-known Schrodinger’s Cat idea. Esteemed Austrian physicist Erwin Schrödinger declared that there was a cat in a box. However, whether the cat was alive or dead couldn’t be determined until the box had been opened. Clearly no sense of smell was involved with this hypothetical cat – or it may have been mummified. Who knows, it’s a hypothesis. What Schrodinger did determine was that for the time when the box was sealed the cat could be considered both alive and dead.

It’s a thought paradox, an abstract idea, and one that works well for me during the business of buying Lottery tickets. Until I check the numbers on my Schrödinger’s Lottery Ticket I have both won and lost. Losing loses me nothing, and winning allows me all of the tantalising thrill of window shopping in estate agent’s windows and luxury holiday online planning. Until I check those numbers, I have won. Lots. All for £2. And I’ve given money to the National Lottery Fund, helping charities all over. Now that’s what I call a value for money cheap thrill.

COMBEN’S PICKS Agnes Varda Ali Smith cites the influential and iconic filmmaker as an early inspiration, so we’re delighted to welcome her to the Festival for a rare personal appearance to host an in-depth illustrated lecture about her career to date. Alongside this, we’ll be hosting a special installation at University of Brighton Gallery and screening some of her works as part of our film programme.

Brighton Dome & Brighton Festival Chief Executive Andrew Comben talks… t’s that time of year again. Brighton Festival returns with another packed three weeks of award-winning performance, thoughtprovoking debate and large-scale, immersive visual art… and this year I’m delighted that award-winning author Ali Smith is at the helm as Guest Director.

What’s remarkable about Ali is her sense of possibility, wonder, imagination and excitement at anything that she encounters – she thinks like no-one else I know and just loves all art forms. You might have an image of an author as a solitary figure, but what’s wonderful is how open to the world - and how connected to other artists within it - Ali is.

Consequently we’ve approached all sorts of extraordinary people to take part in Brighton Festival 2015: together they bode for a very exciting time indeed.

Anyone that reads Ali’s work will know her sense of connection to the natural world, and so the relationship between Art and Nature is one particular theme we’ll be exploring this year; from Laurie Anderson’s exclusive concert titled All the Animals to Marcus Coates’ video installation Dawn Chorus at Fabrica.

We’re also focusing on the crossing places between art forms; Ali makes the point that birds are born without a sense of borders, and we wondered what it would be like to see the world of performance, art and debate through those eyes. In examining where poetry meets music meets theatres meets dance, we’ll present the likes of Mabou Mines’ sublime Lucia’s Chapters of Coming Forth by Day and Sam Green’s heartwarming live cinema experience The Measure of All Things.

Our final theme is that of Taking Liberty. We are on the cusp of a general election, and against that political backdrop we’ll be looking at liberty, equality and freedom in all its many guises; whether that’s an evening in celebration of the Human Rights Act featuring the chair of Liberty Shami Chakrabarti alongside Billy Bragg and Ali herself, or the UK premiere of Richard Nelson’s award-winning four play cycle The Apple Family Plays.

Bringing Brighton Festival together every year is an incredible privilege. It’s only possible because of the extraordinary support we have from funders, sponsors and from audiences themselves.

The audience is one of the most adventurous, experimental and curious that I know. I want Brighton Festival 2015 to be distinct and different, yet keep the essential essence that makes it so popular: it’s an extraordinary explosion of creativity in May. I hope you enjoy it!

On Liberty / Election 2015 The Human Rights Act has protected our civil liberties for over eight decades. In this one-off event, Brighton Festival brings together the likes of Ali Smith, Shami Chakrabarti and Billy Bragg to celebrate this defining achievement. Five days later – once the dust settles on this year’s election and a new political landscape is revealed – Brighton Festival chair Polly Toynbee welcomes back both Ali and Shami for a panel event that asks ‘how was it for you?’ and considers the result and the next five years.

Britten Sinfonia with Barbara Hannigan The work of Stravinsky sits side-by-side with Mozart and Haydn, courtesy of Britten Sinfonia and soprano / conductor Barbara Hannigan. The former are one of the world’s most celebrated and pioneering ensembles, whilst the latter is considered an exciting and brilliant performer of both classical and contemporary work; whether singing or conducting – together they’re certain to create a spellbinding evening of music.

Fleeting An open-air homage to the West Pier, the murmurations that circle it and the people of Brighton & Hove, large-scale performance specialists And Now are presenting this free, immersive and interactive installation on the beachfront. Given the event’s scope to blur the boundary between nature and the arts, I can’t imagine a better – or more fitting – way to end Brighton Festival 2015.

FINDING LUCIA

Sharon Fogarty writer and director talks to Andrew Kay about the creative process involved in making Lucia’s Chapters of Coming Forth By Day with New York company Mabou Mines

What inspires you and what drives you forward creatively?

To quote my friend and colleague Liza Lorwin, “The process is the romance.” I love the process of discovery through long-term collaboration with extraordinary artists. When the music, visuals, text and acting combine to create a sublime and multi-layered experience for the audience… it’s exhilarating to experience the fruits of collective creation.

Does invention allow you to fill gaps that you find in your research, or do you stick with the truths that you uncover and leave the rest alone?

There were a lot of gaps to bridge and while we didn’t want to fill them with made up information, we did invent a context that would serve as a metaphor for her tragedy. In nearly all of Lucia’s letters, she begs to be taken out of the institution, she complains that she had been left or forgotten there and wants to go back to Paris, or Zurich or Dublin. She was desperate to leave, yet incapable to go anywhere or function on her own.

So, for the nearly fifty years she spent in institutions she was metaphorically “dead”. I wrote Lucia’s first line, “Bad news, I’m dead,” placing her in an imagined “afterlife,” a purgatory of sorts, where she eventually finds rescue through her father, and her legacy is best understood through her literary reflection in his wild and impossible book Finnegans Wake.

What is the starting point for you in any new piece of work?

It’s often something that I’ve read and can’t stop thinking about. For Lucia’s Chapters, it was Brenda Maddox’s book Nora that obsessed me for a while.

The obsession then becomes a puzzle to solve, a mystery to unravel.

Research must play a large part in the way you create a piece. Do you find that confining creatively?

The research was very important for this piece, however the task of transforming the research into something performable and audience worthy is probably the most difficult part. I don’t think there is a formula per se, though time and good collaborators help. A painter friend of mine would put his brush down for the day only to check the next morning to see “if the painting had survived the night.” Time is a partner in that way. Having time to sit with your choices and see which ones survive over time is an important part of the editing and shaping process.

What balance do you like to find between art and entertainment?

I want the audience to have fun! Our job is to entertain, even with tragedy. I actually find Lucia quite entertaining and often very funny! I also found her behavior at times “crazy like a fox.” She was in institutions long enough to know how to play with one’s expectations of madness, so that at one moment she might say something that seems foolish yet could also be a veiled razor sharp criticism.

Audience response is important, but how important is it to you?

The audience is everything. I try to see the work in two dimensions as a director, through the performers journey, and as their audience by asking “do I understand and connect with their journey.” Both the artist and the spectator are interdependent, and it’s my hope that through the performance they share a deep connection. I love actors who offer freely their fearlessness and intelligence. Live theatre allows for the unpredictable synergy between the actors and audience.

Does research into a character like Lucia Joyce or indeed any real character become obsessive or indeed need to become obsessive?

I suppose so. Lucia’s story is compelling however at a certain point we had to find an artistic “way in” or a “hit” in order to create a context for our piece. In turn, that becomes the obsession and all the material culled from research serves as the ingredients to make the work.

I find when I am watching theatre that I can become totally drawn into a character’s world. Does this happen when you are creating a work?

Absolutely, that’s what I yearn for. Giving Lucia a voice was important to me.

It seemed to me that because of her illness, her existence was all but erased.

I sought to give her a voice. Her archive showed evidence that she wanted to be known as an important person especially, as she put it, “as the daughter of the famous Irish writer, James Joyce.” Lucia shows up very clearly in Joyce’s most experimental novel Finnegans Wake with many names and identities including Nuvoluccia. For me, Lucia’s unique, real life mixed-up language and her guileless view of the world can be seen as a model for this character, and for that matter, the entire book.

When casting Lucia’s Chapters how difficult was it to find the right people, and having found them is it hard to recast for different productions?

Lucia’s Chapters was created in collaboration with Mabou Mines’ CoFounder Ruth Maleczech as Lucia. Several months after her final performance in Oslo in 2013, Ruth passed away. She was a fierce and defiant Lucia with a Vesuvian anger simmering beneath. Ruth was always quick to suggest though, that someone else play the part, so I feel it’s good and fitting that Maria Tucci take on the role. Maria is a celestial actress with a keen feel for Joyce’s poetry, and having played a lot of Tennessee Williams, an understanding of the fine line between sanity and madness.

As a collective, Mabou Mines has a loose confederation of actors who work with the company regularly. Since our process is highly collaborative, roles are developed for and by the performers who sometimes play a role for more than 10 years.

How much space do you allow yourself to fictionalise a character?

We wanted to create a poetic homage to Luica. So our story is fiction, inspired by her real life events and writings. We also included characters in Finnegans Wake by taking a prismatic approach – to get the full picture of Lucia, you have to look at her through two lenses, her own peculiar skewed point of view and Joyce’s equally peculiar point of view in his novel.

In the creative process did you find any parallels to your own life, being surrounded by artists perhaps… ?

What I find rather frightening about Lucia’s story is that her initial institutionalization seemed to be due to her rebellion against the expected conventions of her as a woman. Was that significant in tipping Lucia’s sanity? And in what ways are rebellious women punished for their rejection of conventional norms especially women artists who often look at the world in opposition to the norm. I am fortunate to work (in not so normal New York) within an artistic community that supports acts of artistic rebellion.

Where is your creative force taking you next?

We’re working on a new adaptation of Goethe’s Faust Part II. Faust and Mephistopheles join forces to create wars for personal gain, while colonizing people and abusing the earth/ecosystem. We aim to, in the Brechtian sense, ask our audiences to think about the systems and principles that we live by. We want to question the Faustian bargains we make everyday as First World citizens. Faust 2.0 will premiere in New York in autumn 2016.

The Apple Family Plays

Richard Nelson’s quartet of plays focussing on the dramas, politics and changes within the fictional Apple family across several years makes its UK premiere in something of a theatre coup for the festival. Each play – That Hopey Changey Thing, Sweet & Sad, Sorry, Regular Singing – was originally performed in New York on the night it was set; often key dates in America’s political and historical calendar, such as the re-election of Barack Obama in 2012 or the 10 year anniversary of 9/11. With a cast made up of some of New York’s finest stage actors and a slew of awards including and Obie and a New York Drama Critics Circle Award for best ensemble acting, it’s no surprise to hear the New York Times hailed the plays as ‘one of the great accomplishments in American theater to date this century’. What’s best - each play can be viewed separately or together, with an option to see all four in a marathon viewing. Combining original poetry with contemporary movement, this new work from adventurous theatre company Fuel and spoken word artist Inua Ellams is a new physical theatre show that celebrates the elegance and beauty of basketball, seen from a British perspective. Getting to the heart and soul of the gravity-defying game and delving into the hopes and dreams of those who play it alongside the friendship and camaraderie behind the sport, six performers will mix live beatboxing, music, hiphop, basketball inspired movement and poetry in a wholly unique event.

The Red Chair

Clod Ensemble’s latest work is a surreal ballad that tells the tale of a man who cannot stop eating, his ever-cooking wife, and their somewhat ignored daughter. With this dark, original fairy-tale at its heart, the piece – which explores extreme compulsion and features stunning movement – lies somewhere between a Grimms’ Tale, an absurdist ghost story and a parent’s guide on how not to bring up children.

CONTEMPORARY MUSIC Jeff Hemmings explores this year's outstanding Brighton Festival contemporary music programme.

here once upon a time Brighton Festival was primarily concerned with classical music, now it's just as much to do with contemporary music, in all its guises, and from around the globe‌ and this year, the music programme looks like the best yet.

Live soundtracking film has become an integral part of the festival in recent years, and this year there's an intriguing live score of Peter Carleen Anderson Strickland's The Duke of Burgundy film by Cat's Eyes, a UK premiere (Brighton Dome Concert Hall, Fri 22 May). This bold homage to 1970s erotica will be soundtracked by a lush, dreamlike soundscape, put together by The Horrors's frontman Faris Badwan, and ItalianCanadian soprano singer and composer Rachel Zeffira.

Former Brighton resident and BIMM tutor Carleen Anderson (Theatre Royal Brighton, Sat 22 May) comes from a family highly steeped in soul and funk; her mother is soul singer Vicky Benjamin Clementine Anderson, her step-father is Bobby Byrd, and James Brown was her godfather. She even toured the world with Brown's All Stars band in the 80s, concurrently enjoying hits with jazzfunk-soul legends the Young Disciples, and then the Brand New Heavies. For this one-off performance, Carleen pays tribute to the 'Divine One', Sarah Vaughan, accompanied by pianist and bandleader Julian Joseph, and special guests.

Also with a voice to die for, new-kid-on-theblock Benjamin Clementine (Theatre Royal Tricky Brighton, Thu 21 May) is an extraordinary talent, coming to prominence with a startling performance on Later‌ with Jools Holland in 2013. A former busker, Clementine's onstage charisma, voice and piano balladry has drawn comparisons with the likes of Nina Simone and Anthony Hegarty. His debut album has only just come out, and this will be a rare opportunity to see this future star accompanied by an extended line-up.

An early collaborator with fellow Bristolians Massive Attack, Tricky (Brighton Dome Corn Exchange, Sat 23 May) aka Adrian Thaws, is one Joey Arias of music's most maverick characters. Made with his then girlfriend Martina Topley-Bird, 1993's Maxinquaye was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize, an album that was voted Album of the Year by NME. Noted for his dark and richly layered sound, and a whispering 'sprechgesang' lyrical style, Tricky has over the years fused rock, reggae, house and hip hop in creating a highly distinct soundscape.

A fixture of New York's performance scene for more than 30 years, Joey Arias (Theatre Royal Brighton, Wed 20 May) scandalous wit, and extraordinary voice is evocative of Billie Holiday. For this Brighton Festival premiere, Arias traverses jazz, pop, rock and experimental

music in taking you on a journey that spans his career including from his time as lead singer with Strange Party, an influence on Talking Heads. Here, he will be accompanied by piano virtuoso Charly Zastrau.

Already with two Mercury Music Prize nominations under her belt, indie-siren Anna Calvi's (Brighton Dome Concert Hall, Sat 9 May) romantic approach to songwriting, compelling live performances and excellent guitar playing has seen her win the admiration of the likes of Nick Cave and Brian Eno (a former Guest Director of Brighton Festival), who was instrumental in helping kickstart her career, and who sang backing vocals on her self-titled debut album. Citing diverse Anna Calvi influences that range from Hendrix to Bowie, and from Maria Callas to Ravel, Calvi's' songs are both dramatic and atmospheric.

Since his early sonic experiments of the 90s, producer, sound artist and composer Tom Jenkinson aka Squarepusher (Brighton Dome Concert Hall, Fri 8 May) has literally been exploring the boundaries of music, drawing on influences from the worlds of drum and bass, house, jazz and electroacoustic music. Last year, he collaborated with a team of Japanese robotocists for an EP performed entirely by Squarepusher robots! For the festival, he'll be bringing his new live show; expect a loud volume, experimental music, and eye-catching visuals.

There will also be an opportunity to see the fantastic groove-laden instrumental jazzers GoGo Penguin (Brighton Dome Corn Exchange, Fri 8 May); the contemporary roots and rhythms of Ukrainian 'ethnic chaos' band DakhaBrakha (Brighton Dome Corn Exchange, 10 May); an outstanding evening of spoken word and music from Kate Tempest, George the Poet and Hollie McNish (Brighton Dome GoGo Penguin Corn Exchange, Thu 14 May); jazz fusionists Dominic J Marshall Trio (Brighton Dome Studio Theatre, Tue 19 May); Gaelic folk singer Julie Fowlis (Brighton Dome Corn Exchange, Thu 21 May); a Brighton Festival exclusive performance by Laurie Anderson (Brighton Dome Concert Hall, Sun24 May), performing a specially curated show called All The Animals, made in response to this year's Festival themes; and Pete Wiggs and Saint Etienne (Brighton Dome Concert Hall, Thu 21 May) performing a live soundtrack to the elegant documentary of London life called How We Used To Live.

Andrew Connal’s round up of highlights from the 2015 classical programme

G

reedily browsing this year’s Festival Programme, I James Baillieu am once again struck by the astonishing variety and quality of the choice. For me the Festival will open with a bouquet of delights as Stephen Hough (Sun 3 May 3pm, Glyndebourne), one of our greatest concert pianist, plays masterworks by Debussy and Chopin in the perfect acoustics of the Isabelle Faust Glyndebourne opera house. It should be a magical event.

This exceptionally high standard of performance, Anna Huntley scholarship and entertainment will be maintained when Isabelle Faust (Mon 4 May, Part 1: 5.30pm – 7pm, Part 2: 8.30pm – 9.45pm, All Saints Church) plays the complete Sonatas and Partitas of JS Bach, in two sessions. I don’t think you can ever have too much Bach! Just like at the opera, there will be a long interval.

Lovers of the Baroque, like me, will also enjoy another inspired Brighton Festival commission, Being Both (Thu Stephen Hough 14 May 8pm, Brighton Dome Concert Hall), which examines the Baroque phenomenon of Stephen Upshaw the castrato roles now sung by women. Directed by Susannah Waters, mezzo-soprano Alice Coote sings Handel with Harry Bicket conducting the English Concert.

In the UK Premiere of The The Lads in Their Hundreds Lads in Their Hundreds (Tuesday 5 May 8pm, Theatre Royal Brighton), (from Housman's “A Shropshire Lad”), veteran French actor Tchéky Karyo recites 15 French war Robert Murray poems and the young ensemble of tenor Edmund Hastings, violinist Michael Foyle and Edward Liddall on piano present music by composers who experienced the trenches: Ivor Gurney, who was fatally traumatised, George Butterworth, who died on the Somme, and Vaughan Williams, whose ‘The Lark Ascending’ became an elegy for those who went to war.

some excellent recitals. This year they have an exciting gypsy flavour, starting with soprano Louise Alder (Wed 6 May 1pm, Brighton Dome Studio Theatre) in songs by Schumann, Szymanowski, Liszt, Panufnik and Brahms.

Next, Baillieu partners baritone Benjamin Appl (Fri 15 May 7pm, All Saints Church) again. Last year their lunchtime concert was a Festival triumph so now they need a bigger venue. We’ll hear more gypsy songs and also some poignant works by composers who died in Nazi camps. Note the early start.

The reason for that early start is because the New London Chamber Choir (Fri 15 May 9pm, All Saints Church) takes over with Animals, an intriguing mix of early and very modern a capella polyphony that brings “a zoo-ful of animals riotously to life”!

James Baillieu completes his gypsy programmes in an alluring concert with tenor Robert Murray and mezzosoprano Anna Huntley (Thursday 21 May 8pm, St George's Church), including the melancholic romance of Janáček’s The Diary of One Who Disappeared.

The Lunchtime Concerts (all at 1pm, Brighton Dome Studio Barbara Hannigan Theatre) offer plenty more Eastern-European music: Alexander Karpeyev Alexander Karpeyev plays Medtner and Stravinsky (Fri 8 May); Stephen Upshaw & Veronika Trisko (viola & piano) play Bartók’s Romanian Folk Dances (Monday 11 May); Cavaleri Quartet play Tchaikovsky (Tue 19 May).

Barbara Hannigan and Britten Sinfonia offer us a lovely The Halle assortment of Mozart, Haydn and Stravinsky, ending with Stravinsky’s delightful Pulcinella Suite. (Tue 12 May 7.30pm, Brighton Dome Concert Hall) Look out for a most important extra in the schedule. Pitch Perfect presents the best local young musical talent, our stars of tomorrow, at several ‘perfect pitches’ around the Royal Pavilion Estate.

Sat 2 May, 12 – 4pm Benjamin Grosvenor The climax of this year’s classical music programme is the brilliant combination of our own Brighton Festival Chorus with Manchester’s Hallé Orchestra, under the baton of their esteemed principal conductor Sir Mark Elder, who is coincidentally President of the BFC. This concert too has an EasternEuropean flavour, with Shostakovich’s exhilarating Concerto for Piano, Trumpet and Strings featuring piano-prodigy Benjamin Grosvenor and the Hallé’s principal trumpet, Gareth Small. This sensational work always leaves me feeling hyped-up and breathless. The concert starts with music from Janáček’s opera The Cunning Little Vixen, so rich with folk tunes and musical colour, and the grand finale is his sonorous Glagolitic Mass which BFC first recorded in 1973! We can expect the very best of interpretations of this majestic masterpiece of Czech choral music. I’m looking forward to another wonderful Festival again this year.

LET’S DANCE Brighton Dome & Brighton Festival associate artist Vincent Dance Theatre – led by the inspiring choreographer Charlotte Vincent – celebrate their 21st birthday this year; and in recognition they’re performing two works in May as part of their 21 Years / 21 Works programme. Performed amidst a maze of chairs and inspired by the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, Underworld is a smoky and riveting journey, whilst the chaotic Look At Me Now, Mummy explores the darkly comic side of being a domestic Goddess.

In a special immersive event on Wed 13 May, both shows will be repeated back to back, with audiences free to come and go as they please between performances in a wonderfully unique promenade style experience.

Fragments Volume I

With a repertoire of more than 30 pieces to his name, Montreal-based choreographer Sylvain Émard presents a UK premiere of work; a collage of solos and duets featuring four different performers, including 81-year old actress Monique Miller. Inspired by the notion of urgency, the pieces are both intense and often surprising, leading one publication to hail the collection of works as ‘a masterpiece’.

Patrons Circle Member - Gary Miller What were your motivations for joining the Patrons Circle and what do you enjoy about being a patron?

I became a Gold Member a long time ago and was invited to an open rehearsal of a Hofesh Shechter work, and after seeing it I thought ‘well, if this is what you can get – this access to this sort of thing – then I’m in’. I enjoy the creative process; I run a small business and I’m a builder, so it’s really interesting to see something being constructed as opposed to just seeing the finished article.

What events are you looking forward to in this year’s Brighton Festival and how do you choose what you see?

I mostly go to see theatre and site-specific work; that often dictates what I book, although sometimes it’s a gut-thing too. I’m also getting a bit long in the tooth now, so I recognise good companies that come back every now and again and I tend to book three or four things a week.

Would you recommend being a Patron to others and why?

I didn’t consider myself as someone who’s that interested in the Arts, however, because my daughter wants to work in contemporary dance, I thought I’d get to know a little more about it. I’ve found it really interesting; something I’ve found surprising because I was always someone who didn’t see the point… but there you go, I’m a convert.

It is great to support the Brighton Festival in a way which is both personal and reflects our SME status as a business.

egfestUK Brighton 2015 was a resounding success with 12,000 visitors over the weekend of March 28th 29th at the Brighton Centre. The event showcased the best of a vegan lifestyle.

Highlights included sumptuous food from 15 caterers and 200 stalls, a Vegan Comedy Festival, a Global Food Sustainability Conference, a Party Political Conference amongst other talks, cookery demos on top of live music and kids activities. Survey suggests 40% of the visitors were not vegan before the event, and nearly 1,000 of them are going vegan and another 2,000 of them are moving towards veganism afterwards.

Louise Michel talks to Suzie Sanderson uzie and her husband, Chris, are internationally renowned teachers of Alexander, and have taught 40,000 sessions. They offer practitioner training at their beautiful Georgian home in Kemp Town, and run one of the most successful private practices in the country. DEAR JACQUIE Your queries about natural health answered by Jacquie Lane for the College of Naturopathic Medicine What can I do to help control acid reflux?

Acid reflux is an uncomfortable and common condition where stomach acid leaks out of the stomach into the oesophagus.

This is the tube that runs from the mouth to the stomach.

Symptoms can include heartburn – the burning chest pain that occurs after eating.

Also, an unpleasant sour taste in the mouth can be experienced, and some people get pain and difficulty in swallowing.

It is thought that one of the causes is the lower oesophageal sphincter muscle not working properly and getting ‘loose’, thereby allowing acid to leak out of the stomach, back up the oesophagus. This muscle should work like a valve, letting food into the stomach and closing afterwards, to prevent acid leaking out.

Things that can aggravate acid reflux are being overweight, eating a high fat diet, meal portions that are too large, and even being pregnant.

Before we even start with food content, the following may help: -Eating slowly and chewing really well, so that food is a liquid before swallowing.

-Eating 5 small meals rather than 3 larger meals.

-Trying food combining, in which you don’t mix carbohydrates (bread, rice, pasta etc) with proteins (meat, fish, beans, lentils).

Dietary changes that can help cover sticking to a naturopathic food plan which includes 5 portions of vegetables and 2 fruits a day. Opt for good quality seeded breads, try sourdough rye bread. Reduce the fat content of foods by discarding fat from meat. Grill meat so that the fat

HEALTH& BEAUTY drips out. Don’t fry foods, reduce cheese and full fat milk. Cut caffeine and fizzy drinks. Eat organic food where possible.

Natural organic probiotic yoghurts have been shown to be useful, as has taking a probiotic capsule and vegetarian digestive enzymes with meals (but not if you have ulcers).

Tests that may be helpful are those that screen for Helicobacter Pylori, an acid- loving bacteria that digs its way into the mucosal tissues of the stomach.

Hop on a Brighton & Hove Bus to uncover hidden treasures in the most unlikeliest of places.

This week: East Grinstead

oday it is all about vehicles. Firstly we are very excited about the Science and Technology Bus that Brighton and Hove buses have kindly donated to Mile Oak Primary School.

Brighton and Hove buses have re-painted the bus, stripped it out and placed a dome on top for stargazing. The bus is currently housed here at Portslade Aldridge Community Academy but it will be moved to Mile Oak Primary School where it will be used as a central hub for other local schools to benefit from. We will be adding further painted details to the outside of the bus - star constellations, animals, that type of thing.

In Portslade, the school leaders and staff believe they are ‘stronger together’ than working in isolation and have therefore formed the Portslade Partnership of Schools which consists of all the local primaries and PACA (and temporarily Kings School until they find a new home). The schools have been working hard together to improve the educational outcomes for all children, and want to raise the aspirations of the local community as a whole - from Primary School right the way through to University and Industry.

Moving on to a different vehicle. I would like to say thank you to John Lilley for bringing one of his ‘Game Wagons’ from his company Junior Game Creators to PACA the other day. Junior Game Creators is a family of fun, running educational clubs and workshops that are designed to kickstart kids interest in computer science through video games. It is for kids who want to look a little deeper at the games they play at home but it is more than just about code. Each session is a super fun, group learning experience. Everyone works towards a common goal, in teams, on challenges that will stretch their creativity in art, design, maths, problem solving, teamwork and communication. In the same way that learning to read enables learning, learning to code opens up a world of exploration and opportunity.

ou may not realise it but there are all sorts of interesting and unusual places to visit on the buses from Brighton & Hove – stretching out to Eastbourne, the South Downs, and Steyning to name but a few.

The pleasant, busy Sussex market town of East Grinstead features some truly magnificent historic timber-framed buildings, shoulder-toshoulder with more modern shops in the High Street.

There is a varied selection of familiar stores, and more independent, individual shops like the well-stocked bookshop in Tudor House, which dates back to 1555, and is very near the War Memorial bus stop. It’s got a café too, so why not pop in for a browse and a coffee?

Just behind the impressive, medievalstyle, sandstone church of St. Swithun with its beautiful stained glass, is the Chequer Mead Arts & Theatre complex with a 318-seat theatre, art gallery, café and giant mural illustrating 1000 years of the town’s history.

East Grinstead Museum is a light and airy modern building housing the towns’ social history, just off the High Street in Cantelupe Road. The displays are anything but dusty, and admission is FREE. BRIGHTON’S ARTY FOLK OPEN THEIR DOORS o big surprises what I’m writing about as we head towards festival month. Because it’s the first weekend of Artists Open Houses.

So if you haven’t picked up your trail guide yet, what are you waiting for?

Around 200 houses and studio spaces across the city will be opening their doors to exhibit the work of more than 1,000 artists – and chez Krog is on the Central Trail at 12 Kemp Street. We’ll be selling copies of our new – and rather gorgeous – coffee table-style book that celebrates the creative community of Brighton and Hove. ‘Art in Brighton 2015’ is packed with the cream of the city’s creative talent; so expect all your favourite artists plus a few unexpected visual treats.

I’d love to be able Claire Fearon to name check all the wonderful artists, photographers, jewellers, galleries and shops that are featured. But I don’t want to spoil your delight as you delve into page after page of stunningly imaginative and truly original creative Kate Osborne & Suzanne Breakwell work. Though I say it myself, the Dane has done a rather splendid job of showcasing the beautiful imagery that we’ve had to play with this year. It really is a privilege to put together and publish such a covetable tome!

And if securing your copy of Art in Brighton 2015 wasn’t reason enough to hot foot it to our door during the May weekends, we’ll also be showing the work of our cover artist Ian Hodgson. His drawing is just exquisite, come and enjoy it up close.

Of course, many of the artists who feature in Art in Brighton 2015 will be hosting their own Artists Open Houses or showing in its venues. very Saturday and Sunday night on Latest TV is film night with my show, FilmFest on TV taking over for a full two hours! Each week we show independent films from across the country, brilliant films that might not otherwise be shown on television.

We're delighted to be filling a huge gap in entertainment culture. Last year there were four billion viewings of feature films on television in the UK- that's twenty two times as many views as in cinemas. That number doesn't even do justice to the huge number of films watched online (be that legally or otherwise). Clearly, we love to watch our big films on a small screen.

At FilmFest we aren't just interested in feature films, however. As long as the runtime is over 6 minutes, we are interested in your film. If it is under 6 minutes then the Latest TV show for you is You Make It We Show It. I try each week to bring you something different and every month we choose either a style, a filmmaker or a film studio to focus on, bringing you all the behind-the-scenes info on the projects we show.

This Sunday at 9pm, we will be looking at United Magic Studios, a Worthing based production studio with an amazing egalitarian creative structure. The studio largely makes corporate videos and adverts but also helps filmmakers to realise their potential. We will be showing three films made by the studio: Short thriller film Hollow, the longer one Noose, a supernatural horror, and documentary The Man That Touched The Sky, about a local kitesurfer jumping over Brighton pier!

At FilmFest, we aren't purely interested in directors and screenwriters and neither is United Magic. Composer Harry Kirby and Director of Photography Matt Prior join us on the show alongside studio founder Jonathan Brooks to explain how the studio is set up to allow all of those involved in the making of a film to take part in the creative process from the very start.

Are you also an independent filmmaker who would like their work to be featured on FilmFest? Our programme acts as a distributer, making your films available for a wide audience but without interfering with your creative rights. FilmFest will soon be a national television programme, shown across the UK, and through showing work with us you have access to potentially millions of people.

FilmFest on TV was created to celebrate British filmmaking talent and we are interested in all types of work; documentaries, dramas, horror, shorts and especially feature films. The film does not need to have been made recently (I am personally a fan of classic films!) and it doesn't need to have been set or shot in England.

NOGGIN THE NOG Classic Postgate and Firmin takes to the stage at the Theatre Royal Brighton as part of Brighton Festival here is a generation of British men and women who grew up on a rich diet of beautifully made children’s programmes and amongst the best are the works created by Small Films and writer Oliver Postgate and illustrator and puppet maker Peter Firmin. Sadly Postgate passed away in 2008 leaving behind a wealth of much loved books, films and above all characters.

I loved them all, from Olly Barker and Fred Beak, The Pingwings, The Clangers, Ivor The Engine, The Pogles, Bagpuss, Basil Brush and my favourite Noggin The Nog. For me they all knocked spots off the rest of TV’s kids programming. Postgate’s scripts were a delight but I loved the wonderful work of Firmin, the characterful puppets were excellent of course but it was the beautiful images of Noggin The Nog and his cohorts and enemies that I loved best.

When I saw that The Sagas of Noggin The Nog, a new stage production based on the TV films was to come to the Theatre Royal Brighton as part of the Brighton Festival I was more than excited, even though it is very much aimed

In the lands of the North where the black rocks stand guard against the cold sea, in the dark night that is very long, the Men of the Northlands sit by their great log fires and they tell a tale… at a younger audience. I suspect that the real draw will be for men and women who grew up on a diet of Small Films’ genius through the 1960s and 70s.

This is Third Party’s first piece of theatre specifically for family audiences. These words will resonate and bring back very happy memories… “In the lands of the North where the black rocks stand guard against the cold sea, in the dark night that is very long, the Men of the Northlands sit by their great log fires and they tell a tale…”

Viking storytellers recreate the wonderful world of Noggin in this new piece of theatre for children,

families and fans. With silly Vikings, puppets, projection and live music, accompanied by the brave and mighty ThorNogson and the great green bird Graculus, we will be taken on a journey of adventure and discovery, to battle against the fearsome dragon and the dastardly deeds of Noggin’s wicked Uncle, Nogbad The Bad! Ruth Herbert, who made some of the beautiful puppets is, by the way, Peter Firmin’s granddaughter.

Peter based the drawings of Noggin and the other characters, on the Lewis Chess Pieces which were uprooted from a sand dune in Uig Bay in 1831 by a poor

superstitious soul who ran away thinking they were elves. Peter decided they were Nogs. The great majority of these chess pieces are in the British Museum but from next year, you will be able to see them at Lews Castle, Stornaway.

The association between Oliver Postgate and Peter Firmin began in 1958 with Alexander The Mouse which they produced for Rediffusion’s magnetic animation system. This went out live and was as hazardous as it sounds, with figures dropping off, turning round and whizzing across the screen.

Noggin The Nog was made in single frame animation by Smallfilms – set up in a barn at Peter and Joan Firmin’s farmhouse in Kent and ‘King Of The Nogs’ was first shown in its black and white version in 1959. It is this version of the film which we reference in the play.

For over forty years Postgate and Firmin have been synonymous with the best in children's television. Their classic films are still loved by viewers of all ages. With simple techniques and delightful story telling, (children’s entertainment once moved at a less frenetic pace) this is a piece of theatre to sit and watch together with your children – or if like me you are a fan, on your own.

ON YOUR MARKS... FRINGE Fill your boots with treats as Brighton Fringe CLUB opens its doors.

MG – it’s actually starting this week! The Brighton Fringe and the Brighton Festival are kicking off this weekend and the possibilities of entertainment are veritably overflowing with variety and potential.

We are lucky enough to have a whole array of talented comics in this town already, but this is a chance for them to shine and luxuriate with a full hour (or half hour) of material that’s purely them – more intellect and funny Sam Savage Pic: Ed Moore and less crowd-grappling. Under this umbrella you’ll find plenty of quality, from the magnificent Zoe Lyons (as seen on Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow), to Sam Savage (Funny’s Funny winner 2013), James McDonnell (Musical Comedy Awards quarter finalist 2015), and other talented folk currently residing in the BN postcode. Must be something in the water.

However, it’s also worth looking out for a few shows that break the mold and come from further afield. Miss Behave’s Gameshow is returning for a short run over at The Marlborough Theatre, and Guruguru promises much (a lot of it a tantalising surprise) over at The Warren. I caught Miss Behave’s Gameshow last time it visited and the closest thing I can liken it to is 70s weekend TV sensation Tiswas, but without the annoying TV screen stopping you from joining in.

Plays are also worth exploring if you’re out looking for a laugh, as is cabaret, and sketch shows. Broaden your search criteria and you broaden your mind. Point & Shoot, Sh*t-Faced Shakespeare and Hurricane Michael have all piqued my interest mixing narrative with laughter, while the Beta Males and Do You Mind offer interesting sketch ideas.

Plus (and who can forget!) it’s the General Election next week. Fancy a little help deciding who to vote for? Then why not pick one of the handily located satirical shows you’ll find at the Komedia, the Rialto and scattered throughout the Laughing Horse Comedy programme. You know, to liven up those dull and forgettable (especially by politicians, it would seem) manifestos.

To be honest, there’s loads to pick from and you don’t need to break the bank on tickets. Mix up free shows with higher cost tickets, maybe stay in the room after your show’s finished and just take a punt on what’s coming up next in that venue, and widen your cultural experience. It’s what a Fringe and Festival are for, after all. www.brightonfringe.org

Joe Lycett: Work In Progress Joe Lycett is charming, disarming and alarmingly funny. Lycett’s work-in-progress was for his new show ‘That’s The Way Uh Huh Uh Huh, Joe Lycett’, which discussing masculinity and his own relationship with the idea. Mixing up his still not fully formed palette of ideas, ranging from service station and stag do anecdotes to the parent/child relationship with his own mother, this may have covered familiar subjects but they were delightfully seasoned with Lycett’s own twist – delivering up unexpected punchlines like a Tango-slap. When, occasionally topics had less of an affect his grace was a lesson in modern manners. This is why seeing works-in-progress can be such a treat.

Not since Jerry Sadowitz have I seen an opening 10 minutes with such a formidable hit rate of taboo-busting jokes, punch after punch. Visceral, relentless, Capurro tackles every stereotype of faith, race and sexuality, and for fun is gifted with the “dirty sauna” boys in this Brighton front row.

But banter and controversy aside, at the heart of the show is a stunning metaphor comparing his mother’s death to the silence of New York after the fall of the Twin Towers. Capurro is an exceptional stand-up with something to say, his truth as funny and offensive as the world.

Public Service Broadcasting With vintage TV set totem poles framing the stage and a homemade satellite dangling between the large screens, the South London duo drafted in a little extra help for a dynamic set that covered their new space race themed album alongside their trademark public information film soundtracks. Vamos Theatre produce full mask productions, much in-keeping with a tradition that goes back Millennia and across numerous cultures. As such there is no ‘dialogue’ and therefore as an audience member you are acutely aware of movement, sound effects and scenery. This was a delightful tale set in Thatcher’s Britain of the early 80’s and centres on Flo, a lady who is determined to have one last look at the hospital she trained at before it’s demolished.

The story flits from the 80’s battle to memories of the 1940’s, some sentimental, some poignant, some agonisingly brutal. Touching and humorous in equal measure.
