British Engineerium open day The British Engineerium held an open day on Sunday 28 October where visitors gathered to see the renovations coming along. The old Goldstone water pumping station, rescued by Mike Holland from permanent closure in 2006, holds some lovely pieces of history and the plans are to turn the building into one the city’s main attractions.

TheVote Voters will choose a police chief this week but some suspect apathy will be the real winner

J

ohn Prescott is running for the post of police commissioner in Humberside. Elsewhere, MPs and former ministers are standing. The contest in Sussex lacks anyone with the profile or high-level experience of the former Deputy Prime Minister.

But one local candidate deserves credit for his efforts to raise the stakes in a contest that can hardly have been said to have inspired the public at large. Ian Chisnall announced in February that he would stand as an independent.

He was the first of the five candidates out of the stalls. And he made a case for keeping politics out of policing. His rivals, naturally, disagree and have the benefit of a party machine behind them to amplify their message.

Other potential independent candidates spoke about standing but the £5,000 deposit and the requirement for 100 subscribers present two significant hurdles.

It is to Mr Chisnall’s credit that he has not just met these conditions but spoken to community groups in so many parts of the county during his energetic campaign.

Praise for Mr Chisnall is not intended to detract from the campaigns of his rivals. In fact, for all his efforts, Mr Chisnall is very much the underdog and it would be a minor miracle if he were to top the poll. He has campaigned with courtesy and humour while posing challenging questions and spelling out his own ideas.

The likelihood is that the Conservative candidate, Katy Bourne, will win on Thursday 15 November. Most Sussex councils are Conservative. Most Sussex MPs are Conservative. She has played safe with her campaign. And while she is not as well known as two of her main rivals – Labour’s Godfrey Daniel and Lib Dem David Rogers – she expects most people to vote for her party rather than her as an individual. Tony Armstrong, of the UK Indepedence Party, is the fifth candidate.

In some quarters there is almost the same level of interest in the voter turnout as there is in the result.

Brighton and Hove Mayor Bill Randall will be one of the speakers when a new organisation dedicated to cutting people’s energy bills holds a launch party on Friday.

BHESCO is a collective which is being set up to give thousands of people across Brighton and Hove better bargaining power with the big gas and electricity suppliers.

BHESCO plans to reinvest its profits in energy-saving schemes and renewable energy microgeneration for its customers.

On Thursday expect the latest episode in the long-running saga of the mobile library. The vehicle housing the books is past its sellby date.

The Greens wanted to scrap it and bank the saving from ending the relatively expensive service rather than fork out for repairs or a replacement.

But veteran Labour councillor Brian Fitch has made capital out of needling the administration over this even though they offered to run a doorstep delivery service in place of the old vehicle.

Twice Labour and the Conservatives have combined to defeat the Greens. A compromise now looks likely involving a reduced service.

The anonymous Brighton Politics Blogger has remarked in the past about Councillor Fitch’s ability to mount exactly this sort of campaign. Next in his sights is trying to save Toads Hole Valley from the builders. While few expect him to succeed, they would be wise not to underestimate him. ■

50-WEEK PROMENADE RENOVATIONS

They were built during the reign of Queen Victoria and 120 years later work has begun to renovate the Kings Road Arches, on the prom between Alfresco’s restaurant and the i360 viewing tower site at the West Pier.

The work to strengthen and refurbish the historic arches will take 50 weeks – yes, the best part of a year – and the upper prom will be closed during that time. There’ll be new road crossings for pedestrians and cyclists, and diversions.

ver the last few weeks, a devastating series of recent Government announcements suggest that their cuts to our budget for next year have jumped up from £14m to about £25m.

However we still don’t know for sure, and won’t until at least December. The constant moving of goalposts makes long term planning and consultation with residents in the city very difficult.

The Government’s rate of cuts means that in just a few years,

SHREDDED NEAT

Lewes MP, Norman Baker, Parliamentary Under Secretary for the Department for Transport, was given a tour of a new recycling firm at Burgess Hill, Shredded Neat, by its MD Tony Hannigan. And contractors Thomas Sinden have been appointed to build an eco-café on The Level, similar to the new café in Russell Square. It will include an environmentally friendly ‘green’ roof and other eco technologies such as low-energy lighting, solar thermal panels and an air source heat pump. Work begins 3 December. ■

The local council, for the first time, declared the event “too frightening” for children, following last year’s incidents which left five people with eye injuries. There are some genuine ways in which money can be saved – and that is why we’re looking to cut our energy bills, move into more efficient and compact offices, and working with other councils to save money on bulk buying.

between Tories, Labour and the Lib Dems is that cuts to local government will continue long into the next Parliament.

We are in a fight for the future of local government, and the very existence of local councils hangs in the balance. Squeezing and slicing budgets won’t be enough to deal with government cuts – and many councils are being forced to stop providing some services altogether.

No major party has explicitly stated that they are seeking to end the idea of independent local government, but that is where we are headed if we do not act now.

Unless we shift Westminster’s thinking, we will see councils irreversibly wither away, and we risk losing many of the services that so many residents value.

AFTER LOCAL CHILD NEGLECT CASE

A case of parents neglecting a child because of their addiction to drink or drugs has led to doctors, health visitors, midwives and social workers being given extra training. A review found a need for “considerable learning” as a result of the case.

Brighton and Hove Local Children Safeguarding Board said in its annual report that the review recommended: Improvement in antenatal assessment processes; Support for a GP practice on capacity related to safeguarding; The need for more face-to-face meetings between health visitors, midwives and GPs, especially as community staff are less likely to be attached to a doctors surgery; Improved assessment of parental capacity by agencies with adult clients.

Separately the report said that a hospital consultant specialising in child protection medicals had been recruited by the trust in charge of the Royal Sussex County Hospital. This happened after concerns were raised about whether there were enough suitably senior staff to provide prompt enough medicals in child protections cases. The trust agreed that junior doctors needed better supervision and the quality of medical reports would be improved.

Brighton and Hove City Council also agreed to carry out a review of safeguarding in relation to adopted children after concerns came to light.

A confidential report will be shared with the safeguarding board’s Serious Case Review Panel.

■ CHIMNEY SWEEP CLEANS UP IN MEMORY OF HIS DAUGHTER Portslade chimney sweep David Ansell has hit a charity fundraising target set by his dying daughter.

Mr Ansell promised to donate everything he could earn in a day to the Teenage Cancer Trust in memory of his daughter Beth.

She was just 18 when she died in February from a rare form of cancer called Ewing’s Sarcoma. Mr Ansell said: “Beth’s goal was to raise £10,000 for the Teenage Cancer Trust.” After she died, he vowed to finish the fundraising work that she had started.

Mr Ansell swept enough chimneys to make £665 – or £831.25 with gift aid – taking the total past the target. He said: “A big thank you to everyone who showed an interest. I will be doing this once a year and next year I will divide any money raised between the various charities that helped Beth.”

■ ARTISTS PREPARE FOR RETURN OF OPEN HOUSES FESTIVAL The Artists Open Houses Christmas 2012 Festival will take place during the first three weekends of December involving more than 50 venues and hundreds of artists.

The organisers described it as “a great opportunity to find affordable, unique and personalised Christmas presents for friends and family”.

The festival runs from Saturday 1 December to Sunday 16 December. The range of work includes jewellery, ceramics and textiles as well as painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography and many other media. Entry is free and many houses offer homemade tea and cake.

The organisers added: “The Artists Open Houses festival provides the perfect opportunity to view and buy artwork directly from artists and makers, in the artists homes and studios. Many visitors buy their first piece of original artwork at an Open House and return again year after year.

“Exhibiting artists include many experienced and professional artists, others starting out on their careers, as well as marginalised artists, school and college students.” There are two annual Artists Open Houses festivals, with the other one taking place during the Brighton Festival period in May.

Barbara Mariposa, a trained doctor, now works as a well-being coach and acupuncturist. She has always been curious to know what keeps people well and how some people seem to always bounce back. Her answer is that compassionate people feel better.

We are living in our bubbles as individuals. Many stress related illnesses, depression and anxiety arise from isolation. Statistics predict that by 2020 depression and anxiety will be the second largest cause of ill health in the UK. Barbara has managed to help herself recover from depression and mental illness so that she does not need any medication.

She wants people to know that they are not victims.

We all have the power to enhance our own health through our actions, thoughts and behaviour.

“Say thank you to somebody, those two little words could make someone’s day” When we take part in acts of kindness we change the way our brain works. We also release endorphins like serotonin and oxytocin. Serotonin alters our mood and keeps us calm. Oxytocin boosts our immune system, has a calming effect and makes people feel more connected to one another. Even if you are not feeling good you can help yourself, as well as others, by shifting your focus outwards instead of inwards. You are getting this cascade of hormonal rewards that help you change the wiring in your head that has kept you depressed.

aturday afternoon: cake and latte time. Once again I have managed to avoid being blown into the sea whilst doing my brisk 5k run towards Saltdean and back. I’m dreaming of warmth and homely atmosphere whilst skipping towards my local café. There I get lost in the different shapes and colours of cupcakes, biscuits and tarts. I almost forget that I have one more job to do before I’m allowed my Saturday treat; I should ask if I may put up my last charity poster.

I’m asked to have a look at the postcards at the cafeteria’s window ledge instead. “It’s all free,” says one of the ladies, pointing out that my poster aims to sell raffle tickets. I recognise the postcards. They are for ‘Close the GAP Day’ on 13 November. I tell the lady that I’m planning to interview Barbara Mariposa, the person behind it, because I think she could be an inspiration. The lady laughs and says, “What a lovely coincidence. It’s me!”

One week later we sit down together and I start interviewing Barbara: What does GAP stand for? “GAP is the gap between people and societies,” she replies.

G stands for GIVING. You can be generous by giving money to charity or just by giving an orange to someone.

A stands for APPRECIATING. Say thank you or anything that shows your interest in other people.

P stands for PARTICIPATING. People who participate,

have a large social network and make the effort to reach out to others, have better health.

egendary British racing driver Sir Stirling Moss and Lady Moss took part in the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run on Sunday 4 November. Eighty-three-year-old Sir Stirling, who is widely recognised as the greatest all-round racing driver in the history of motor sport, attended the world’s oldest motoring event which runs annually in the city. Speaking about the ride, Sir Stirling said: “Everybody leads such a hectic life these days that it’s nice to relax the pace every so often. My wife and I very much enjoyed the gentle trip down to Brighton at no more than 20 miles an hour!” 2012 marks 116 years since the first Veteran Car Run and saw around 500 pre-1905 vehicles making their way from Hyde Park in London to Madeira Drive, Brighton.

Strike force Regarding the ongoing lack of a goal scorer issue, here are some intriguing comments, a litany of ‘if only’s. “If only we had marksmen to add penetration to our possession based football we would not be languishing in the League after 10 matches.” Sound familiar? Then there’s this: “We play him in that false number nine role. He is not your traditional striker who stands up there, stood static. That’s why when we get a number of players in who can work off his qualities it is going to make us a real threat and allow us to penetrate behind him.” Gus Poyet discussing tactics? Roy Hodgson trying to educate his England players? Neither. It was the new Liverpool manager describing Luis Suarez. Now, I am not comparing Suarez to our boys in the blue and white stripes, but the comment reflects exactly how Gus seems to set up the team with Craig Mackail-Smith. Like Liverpool, Albion have struggled to score goals despite their similarly intelligent passand-move approach to play and Rodgers knows the answer is to sign a more orthodox striker to get the best from his team. Until the transfer window opens, Mr Poyet, who clearly realises he needs this role filled by not one but possibly two forwards, will be relieved that Dobbie is providing the stop gap to keep The Albion in the hunt until the business end of the season. I

was on Oxford Street the other day and I was approached by a lady. She was in her mid 40s and spoke very little English. She simply showed me a piece of paper with three phone numbers on it, said “lost” and started crying.

Now this is obviously a bad situation. I’m not sure what it says about me that for a good while I suspected this to be some sort of robbery scam. A new technique whereby, instead of pick pocketing or snatching a phone, you instead pretend to be a tourist and start crying. Within seconds, my computer like brain decided that this was unlikely.

I took the piece of paper and called one of the numbers. The name of the person I was calling was Mona. The crying lady watched me closely, still occasionally doing that post cry hiccup thing, as if to remind me why I was doing this.

I got through to Mona who very quickly was able to convey to me that she didn’t have a clue what I was saying. So I passed the phone over to my new friend. Now what I expected was for ‘Sobby’ to convey the issue to Mona, arrange where to meet and be done with it. What actually happened was that these two girls decided to have a right old natter. I have no idea what they were saying, but it went on an inordinately long time. I don’t know every language but I am pretty sure it doesn’t take 15 minutes to say ‘I went shopping with you and you left me behind stupid’. This put me in a bind. I was sympathetic to this woman’s plight, but at the same time I didn’t want this stranger arranging her social calendar on my wedge. But she doesn’t understand a word of what I’m saying. So what I decided to do was look up the street and then at my watch repeatedly while sighing. This was actually a

very clever way of saying, ‘Actually I’m on my way to a meeting you cheeky little git’.

This, unsurprisingly, didn’t work. She carried on yammering on about whatever political issues were concerning her. I was getting increasingly annoyed.

Eventually, she put the phone down and handed it back to me. As soon as this happened, I was relieved. And my feelings of concern for this woman’s wellbeing returned. Not enough to tell her the Top Shop situation though. I’m not Mother Theresa.

As we parted, she said thank you and I went to shake her hand when she lurched forward and hugged me, saying, “Thank you so much.” I felt for her even more. I really couldn’t tell her about Top Shop now. She would know that it was because of the hug, and this would look like some sort of pervy transaction where I decided to tell her the truth because she touched me. That would be weird. So I decided the best option for both of us would be for her to be lost indefinitely. I went for a coffee, and wandered back that way afterwards.

She was gone. I spent the rest of the day thinking about what it felt like to be a hero.

want to share an anecdote with you that opens a conversation about a topic I have very mixed thoughts on: unpaid internships. I recently saw a post on Facebook by an acquaintance looking for an intern to help with marketing for their shop. I then had a message from an excolleague who had applied for this internship and was looking for a reference for her potential new ‘employer’. I’d met this colleague – let’s call her Emily – when she had worked with Brighton Fashion Week 2012 as an intern. I had, with our team, guided her in new media development. Emily had come to us with limited skills in this area, after a decade spent raising two beautiful children, and had left as an accomplished web editor after putting in many hours of her own valuable time away from her children. The result was a flourishing website and a successful event which both parties benefited from. Emily has expanded her already excellent skill-set, but a few months down the line is still struggling to find relevant work. Not an unusual story at present.

I said to her that I thought her skills were now developed beyond that which an internship with this particular shop could offer her, and if she was going to do another internship she should look for something offering to teach skills she doesn’t have. After all, isn’t the idea of an internship to exchange skills for time? Nevertheless, she went along to the interview and they, unsurprisingly, jumped at the chance to take her on. Before she started Emily wrote to me again, saying that part of this internship would be to serve in the shop.

Hang on a minute, what was it Emily was getting for her time? Unpaid drudgery? Anyone out there willing to do shop work for free? No? Me neither.

I advised her that if she was expected to do this work she should expect at least a minimum wage, and could then offer to do the PR and social media on top, during quiet times on the shop floor. Good deal both ways; Emily got a bit of much needed

Or rather, I haven't lately, because Pal offered to get me very fit very fast, so took me to a combat class where she could relieve herself of all frustration by releasing her aggression. Not long ago, I was visiting a family in Edinburgh and when I opened the front door, their little girl was sitting in the hall singing to her dolls. The first thing that occurred to me as I watched that child so wrapped up in her fantasy she didn’t know anyone else existed, was “This could never happen in America.”

Just last month, I lost my way on a Brighton street and a woman I did not know walked me several blocks to my destination. If you are lost in my town, it is your bad luck. People here have deadlines. They don’t have time for compassion.

I wonder if California dreaming is fun anymore.

ight, listen up, O yay, O yay, roll up roll up, has anyone got a roll up? For I, Mr Whistler – the invincible super fly guy gonna jump real high extraordinaire guy – intend to set a remarkable new world record.

Did you see the documentary about Felix Baumgartner,an Australian daredevil who jumped out of a balloon 24 miles above Earth. After a four-minute plunge, during which he broke the speed of sound, the loonoid successfully completed the world’s highest skydive.

In terms of time, the duration of the jump equates to starting the bath (shallow for environmentalists), putting the rubbish out, setting up the

smoothie maker and opening the post (providing it’s a reasonably quiet day). Yes, it takes me four minutes to do all of that – I timed it, the difference being I didn't break the speed of sound.

So what’s the announcement?

I’m glad you asked! I intend to break this record by one millimetre.

I am currently building a huge ruler to measure the attempt and seeking out a balloon sponsor, preferably not a clown’s balloon as that may end up in more of a rocket experience rather than speed balling it to planet Earth aiming to land on the designated bull’s eye made from a pot of red paint.

I am scared of heights and still traumatised by the last bungee jump in Hove, but if I go one step higher on the step ladders every

A bed of dead herbs leaves him with a nasty taste in his mouth

M

y herb garden is dead. To be honest, my herb garden has been an unmitigated disaster from day one. Having moved into a flat with a basement courtyard I was so excited that once again I might grow fresh herbs. There was already a huge and flourishing palm tree, a bamboo and an aspidistra so I assumed there was at least a hint of fertility in the flower beds.

With this in mind I headed off to the South of England Show, where I purchased a set of rather robust looking herb plants at no little expense. They did look fine and I carefully transplanted them into the beds and watched. I watched every day. At first they wilted a little, then a few days on they rallied and showed signs of improvement. But not for long.

There were around 15 in total, and they certainly prolonged the agony of failure as they died off, one by one. Even the mint, the most robust of garden herbs, has failed and all that remains is a withered stump, and don’t try to comfort me with cries of ‘just wait, next day you will be ankle deep in the stuff and ruing the day you planted it!’

Well I won’t, I will be harvesting it by the armful and making huge jugs of mint tea sweetened with honey to calm my anger at the loss of the other 14 dismal specimens.

That might be a little harsh, the plants were sturdy enough when I bought them, so maybe they

just didn’t like it in my sunken courtyard. To be frank, I don’t blame them either. Lovely as it is, with the dismal summer we had we never once ventured out there to enjoy the cool solitude; we didn’t need to get cool, we needed to get warm.

Perhaps the cold that lingers is not medical after all – but rising damp.

I would never deny that I have a lovely job, a real joy that takes me out and about to meet interesting people, see great theatre and art, and interview actors and business people...

And then there’s the food. The most recent uttering of the ‘what a lovely job’ line came after I had spent a few hours judging a curry competition. This was my third time in the role and it has become an annual event that I very much look forward to. The Food Safety Team at the City Council had organised their Brighton & Hove Curry Chef of the Year and this year the judging was at Brighton Racecourse. Each of the five chefs had been briefed to create three dishes: a main course, a side dish and either a rice or bread. Of course, challenged with creating a meal in competition conditions, what chef can resist a bit of showing off? As a consequence we had more

Next year I will try herbs again, this time in pots on our front window ledges but any advice would be very welcome.

Next week it’s cakes, and I have been assured there will be only three finalists. I hope so.

Mr S and I chose the chicken breast with sautéed cabbage and a fondant potato. It was exactly the kind of heartwarming dish for a blustery evening that seemed to mark the end of a pretty dismal summer. The chicken was more than generous, the sauce rich and the cabbage tasty. The fondant potato was a game of two halves. They’re not easy to get right and require a lot of attention. These had received enough attention for one side to have achieved the correct texture of fluffy potato bathed in rich stock and then coated in a fine buttery crust. The other side had been left a little long to the ferocity of the oven and was rather more like a roast potato. It’s a minor complaint as it was still delicious.

For dessert, Mr R had a baked cheesecake which disappeared pretty damned fast. Mr S and I had the panacotta with mulled wine fruit compote. It was good, the creamy base perhaps a little firm, but deliciously tasty nonetheless.

At £19.95 for two courses and a glass of wine it’s pretty good value too and the service is exemplary, charming and efficient, despite Ms River’s attempts to scupper that with her wayward ways. If there was one thing I would improve it would be the lighting, the sleek black theme looks nice but it is all a bit on the dark side and our window table, with excellent views, certainly needed at least a candle. Easily remedied. It’s certainly worthwhile checking on the availability of dining as part of your Brighton Centre visit.

Light bites Another gong for the Food Festival The Brighton & Hove Food and Drink Festival has been shortlisted for the Tourism Event of the Year category of the Beautiful South Awards 2012-13.

A fantastic number of entrants for the prestigious Beautiful South Awards for Excellence 2012-13 has resulted in an impressive shortlist.

Entrants representing tourism’s highest achievers from across the South East include Two Hoots Campsite in Hampshire, Beaulieu Enterprises Ltd also in Hampshire, Watts Gallery in Surrey and Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire.

Other finalists in the Tourism Event of the Year category include: Beaulieu International Autojumble, Shakespeare Festival, The Hampshire Food Festival and Wallingford Food Festival 2012.

The all important envelopes will be opened on 28 November at an evening of celebration hosted by Tourism South East at Denbies Wine Estate, Surrey, with Heart FM’s Toby Anstis presenting the awards.

few months back I found myself writing about the massive improvements made at the Brighton Centre. It may be getting on in years now, but the team that run it, and the recent investment in the fabric of the building have made a massive difference. Apart from the new fascia and easier access, there have been improvements throughout and none more dramatic than to the third floor bar and restaurant. Here the crazy split level has been removed and revealed stunning views along the coast. The décor has been simplified and has a more contemporary feel and for certain performances there is a restaurant, serving a two course pre-show dinner.

With tickets to see the legend that is Joan Rivers, an accolade that she more than earned that night with a ripping set that proved her to be one of the comic geniuses of the last 50 years for sure, we booked in for dinner.

Arriving at 6.30pm was no hardship, it was a vile evening and not one that you would have wanted to be out on. The idea of dinner pre-show is always tempting, but it always carries the worry of timing and perhaps missing the kick off. Being in situ was both easy and relaxing.

The menu goes straight to mains followed by pud. Mr R chose the rump of lamb with Mediterranean vegetables and olive oil mash, and pretty good it looked too. He certainly seemed to enjoy it and declared that the lamb was excellent, tasty and tender.

THE JUDAS KISS, Theatre Royal Brighton, 5 November 2012 ✪✪✪✪✪

M

uch has been said and written about Oscar Wilde. So much so that the received knowledge of the man is very much fixed in an image of a fedora-wearing swaggering beast, dispensing brilliant one-liners with supreme arrogance. Much of that may be true, but this is not what David Hare’s play is about. Here we see Wilde at two pivotal moments in his life where, due to his own obstinacy, circumstances defeat him. The wit is still there, the arrogance and swagger, but here is a broken man.

Rupert Everett captures this with absolute precision, the brilliance surfacing through the defeat to remind us of how far from grace Wilde fell.

Infuriatingly arrogant one minute, he is a blubbering wreck the next, bemoaning the loss of his children. He reveals the complexity of emotions that a man in his position and at that time in history must have felt. He is losing everything, and for what?

Freddie Fox plays Bosie as equal in arrogance to Wilde, but not in talent, and he does this well. The attraction of the character is clear but it soon becomes apparent that Bosie will use Wilde against his father to his own ends. Cal Macaninch plays Robbie Ross, Wilde’s first love and the constant and loyal factor in Wilde’s life. There to try and steer him to making better decisions and still there when he fails.

At the end Everett shows us a Wilde stripped of dignity, destroyed by his time in Reading Goal, exiled, penniless and infamous, and at last perhaps aware of his own contribution to his downfall.

Beautifully staged and with excellent supporting roles, The Judas Kiss sees Everett give the performance of a lifetime – so far.

ALT-J + STEALING SHEEP

Mercury-winners Alt-J came into town on the crest of a wave, playing a soldout show to an adoring crowd, lapping up every moment as the hype had hit fever pitch. Was it justified? After an ace bout of Throwing Muses jangle and Cocteau Twins haze filtered through vintage surf from Liverpool trio Stealing Sheep, the headliners played a subdued, quietly classy set.

A curious mish-mash of intelligent indie, synth-pop and world music, Alt-J, with their barely-there stage presence, might have been the whitest band alive during almost bland filler material. Luckily, when their distinctive, world-conquering killer basslines kicked in, they emerged as a soft-spoken powerhouse of post-Radiohead crossover rock.

The stick-thin, drain-piped, bird’s nest-coiffured punk poet entered to the theme from Dragnet and performed a set where the rhythmic monotone poems were almost incidental to his coherent ramblings. A riff on the guest list and a flurry of one-liners led into tales of bad times in Wales that ended with a lounge singer rendition of ‘April In Powys’.

A hilarious raconteur and inventive ad-libber, it was no surprise to see a persistent heckler humoured then deservedly dispatched to rapturous applause. Terry Pratchett and Jimmy Savile were cleverly lampooned, and the old pro’s intelligence lifted the corniest gags.

STAGE: AWARD SUCCESS FOR CHICHESTER FESTIVAL THEATRE Imelda Staunton, David Hare and Henry Goodman all pick up prizes for work at Chichester Festival Theatre

T

wo outstanding performances in Chichester Festival Theatre productions have won prestigious industry awards.

At the Theatre Awards announced on Sunday 28 October, Imelda Staunton won Best Performance in a Musical for her portrayal of Mrs Lovett in Sweeney Todd, first staged at Chichester during Festival 2011 before transferring to the West End earlier this year.

Henry Goodman received the award for Best Performance in a Play in the title role of The Resistible Rise Of Arturo Ui, staged during Festival 2012.

Jonathan Church, artistic director at Chichester Festival Theatre, said: “It’s wonderful to receive this recognition of Imelda and Henry’s extraordinary and unforgettable performances in these extremely demanding and complex roles. This is the Festival Theatre’s 50th year, and to win these accolades feels like a fitting conclusion to Festival 2012.” Chichester Festival Theatre had also received nominations in the following categories: Best New Play – South Downs by David Hare; Best Musical Production – Sweeney Todd, directed by Jonathan Kent, and Best Performance in a Musical – Michael Ball in Sweeney Todd.

The Awards – formerly known as the TMA Theatre Awards – are given by the Theatrical Management Association, and include not only London’s West End, but theatres throughout England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

Redevelopment begins at Chichester Festival Theatre At the same time as the company are receiving such accolades the demolition of the Admin building at Chichester Festival Theatre has already started marking the beginning of the next phase of its major RENEW redevelopment programme.

An excavator (digger) is now on site, carrying out demolition work and over the next few weeks, the contractors will gradually remove the areas at the rear of the theatre, including the Green Room, the foyer Terrace Bar and the Box Office. Alan Finch, executive director at Chichester Festival Theatre, said: “Although it’s sad in some respects to see the demise of the buildings that hold so many special memories, it’s very exciting to mark the latest phase of the Theatre’s redevelopment. We remain extremely grateful to all of the organisations and individuals who have made it possible.”

access and public facilities, improved backstage facilities and changes to make the building more energy efficient. The Theatre’s RENEW campaign received a major boost this summer when Arts Council England (ACE) confirmed a recent award of £12 million towards the project. The Arts Council funding immediately unlocked an additional £8 million in pledged local support from businesses, trusts and individuals, and, most notably, from West Sussex County Council and Chichester District Council who have pledged £1.5 million and £500,000 respectively.

The fundraising campaign, ongoing for the last two years, continues in earnest to raise the essential remaining £1.8 million.

The inevitable disruption during the early phases of the onsite work means that a winter season will not be staged in the Minerva Theatre this year.

However, plans are already underway for Festival 2013, which will be announced next February. Chichester District Council has given planning permission for the Theatre to build a temporary 1,400-seat Pavilion on the Park. MUSIC: LAU Jeff Hemmings talks to Kris Drever of folk group Lau

M

usically adventurous and featuring three of the finest players from these Isles: Kris Drever (guitar, vocals), violinist Aidan O’Rourke and accordionist Martin Green, Lau have released three acclaimed albums, and have already won Best Group at the Radio 2 Folk Awards three times.

They also like to dip their toes into less-traditional waters, particularly on their adventurous new album Race The Loser. Earlier this year they teamed up with Cream’s legendary bassist Jack Bruce and folktronica’s Adem. “We were doing the rehearsals [with Bruce] and it was like watching some guy do a stadium rock gig, and he’s 70! An incredible guy, a treat to work with.

Adem is also a fantastic man,” says Kris Drever, perhaps the most well known of the trio thanks to his solo work and various collaborations.

With Lau it’s all about playing together and working up some magic. “We spend a lot of time sitting in a room and making music,” says Chris It’s recorded live; it’s the only way to get a performance, otherwise it can be perfect but lacking any ‘light’. The new record is the most successful at replicating what we do live.”

Race The Loser was produced by Tucker Martine, husband of American musician Laura Viers. “He has the people skills! Within 15 minutes of meeting him he was in the band, and created a great atmosphere for us to work in.”

Lau’s music veers fluidly from the sombre to the cheerful, from the gentle to the energetic, with their often hypnotic musicianship delivering a warm and enveloping sound that this time around is embellished with touches of ambient electronics, psychedelia and nu-folk here and there. “I listen to a lot of contemporary music, keeping an ear on what others are doing, to see what we can use... It’s good the purist camp exists though, to remind you of how it was. The purist isn’t about just a delivery or a performance, but it is about the oral tradition. I don’t poo pooh the purist!

“There have been some big changes though – folk has been the hottest thing the last few years. But I feel the number of ukulele owners in the UK has reached a critical mass!”

EVENTS: CINECITY The Brighton Film Festival celebrates its 10th edition

C

inecity returns with a jam-packed programme of the very best in international cinema, premieres, previews, live music, screenings, events, talks and debates.

The festival starts with a preview of Martin McDonagh’s follow up to In Bruges, with the a screening of Seven Psychopaths. Described as the mustsee cult film, Colin Farrell plays a screenwriter who finds himself out of his depth when he becomes mixed up in a plan to kidnap a pampered pooch and ends up entangled in the LA criminal scene. The cast also includes Christopher Walken, Sam Rockwell, Woody Harrelson, and Tom Waits.

Festival sponsor Jamesons Irish Whisky will serve specially designed complimentary cocktails before the opening of the film.

Music features heavily in this year’s programme and there will be a strong selection of new music films and documentaries in a pop-up cinema specially created by Cinecity at The Basement, 24-25 November.

Screenings include Hit So Hard, charting the journey of Patty Schemel, the openly gay drummer of Courtney Love’s band Hole, whilst Last Shop Standing takes you behind the counter to discover why nearly 200 record shops have already disappeared across the UK. In addition to premieres, Q&As and special events, Cinecity are also creating a Cinema Bookshop at the University of Brighton Gallery. It will stock a range of new titles across the entire spectrum of cinema and the moving image. The proceeds from the second-hand section will go to The Cinema and Television Benevolent Fund, the leading UK charity for people working behind the scenes in the film, cinema and television industries.

There’s plenty of films and live music to satisfy all tastes this year bringing the best in international cinema to Sussex.

queeze’s virtuoso bass player John Bentley was getting down at the studio recording some new tracks for their up and coming album. With barely a moment to spare I interrupted this process with my usual grace. With John’s cheeky face and soft spoken northern accent, I was easily led up a number of garden paths, when what I really wanted to do was stroke the cool cat.

You’ve been on telly a lot lately...

“BBC4 had a Squeeze night” Did they cram a lot of cuddles into it?

“They screened a brand new documentary called Take Me I’m Yours, and they screened a concert we did back in 1982.”

And you haven’t changed a bit – is must be the vitamins! Even so, you’re a family man nowadays, married with children...

“I got married, one child, that didn’t work out so I married a fully grown adult.”

“My rockstar lifestyle has lasted my whole life, so in the early days when I first became a rockstar which was... 1979, I wasn’t a family man, so you can imagine what that was like! Then much later I got married in 1994 and had a child in ‘95.”

I know you’re really into comic books, so which comic book or hero has spoken to you the most?

“I like all the underground comics. You know, R. Crumb, all his stuff, Mr Natural, all the characters that he does. And I also like Rick Griffin, he’s the guy that does all the Grateful Dead album sleeves.”

You could make a comic about your life, couldn’t you?

“I’ve made several comics myself, I’ve made a couple of comics with my daughter. I’ve got a character called Uncle Compos. He’s a bit like an R. Crumb character, I suppose, he’s a bit boring, ya’know he sort of sits around watching TV and there’s nothing in his head.”

You’re no stranger to touring having recently come back from another American tour. Have you got any advice on life in a bus?

“You have to sleep with your feet facing in the direction that the bus is travelling, because if you sleep the wrong way round and the bus stops suddenly or crashes into something, you break your neck. Whereas if you sleep the correct way, you just break your ankles.”

Can you imagine what else you might have been if not a musician?

“I wouldn’t have minded being a dentist.”
