Alive Fitness & Natural Health, independent Brighton based gym, opened its doors for a spooky charity event on Sunday 28 October.

The “Spooktacular event” raised £530 for two local charities: the Martlets Hospice and LostCatsBrighton. Alive’s sales manager Joseph Tanner and personal trainer Jenny Dunn organised the four-day event and involved all the staff at the gym. The event kicked off with a gruelling Spookathon, six work-out classes back to back, after which guests were able to enjoy a well deserved cake from the charity sale and enter a less demanding raffle. The whole staff dressed in fancy dress making sure people got into the spooky atmosphere and the crèche offered face painting for the little ones.

Over the past five years, Rockinghorse, the official fundraising arm of the Alex, has raised over £250,000 for projects at the children’s hospital. At a reception held at the Royal Alex Children’s Hospital in Brighton, Dr Oli Rahman, Lead Consultant for Paediatric Medicine, said: “With the support of Rockinghorse, we can truly give the children the service they deserve.”

To coincide with Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Nuffield Health Brighton Hospital played host to Dame Kiri Te Kanawa on Wednesday 24 October when she opened their new Digital Mammography Suite.

Dame Kiri cut the pink ribbon before enjoying a pink champagne reception in the hospital’s impressive new reception area. She was entertained by the Actually Gay Men’s Chorus and Actually Gay Women’s Chorus and helped draw the raffle, which alone raised over £300 for Breast Cancer Care.

fficials have been accused of directing coaches to park in residential Brighton streets where the drivers have no proper facilities, according to a deputation heard at a council meeting. George Cummings, of Roedean Way, Brighton, said: “Brighton and Hove prospers enormously from the tourist industry and the tourists who come here and many thousands arrive by coach, dozens of coaches each week.

“However, Brighton and Hove City Council only provides 42 coach parking spaces in the city to manage the ever growing demand over recent years. So officials have been quietly directing coaches to park along totally unsuitable roads adjacent to and actually within residential neighbourhoods such as Roedean Road, The Cliff, Roedean Crescent and Roedean Way.” Mr Cummings, representing Roedean Residents Association, said: “As well as being a visual eyesore, the continual mass of

“It cannot be stressed too highly the dangers this unauthorised parking creates. There is no pavement down Roedean Road, only a narrow pedestrian way marked with a white line over which most cars travelling towards the A259 are forced to drive. Any pedestrian takes his life in his hands using this way when coaches are parked. Also crossing the road is fraught with danger since there is no visibility.”

Mr Cummings added: “The bus service is disrupted because the drivers heading to Brighton rightly consider at certain times it too dangerous to drive on the wrong side of the road. Getting on and off the bus is a major problem with no visibility of oncoming traffic. There has been a serious accident recently entirely attributable to one of the car drivers being forced on to the wrong side of the road and it is only a matter of time before there is another possibly fatal accident.

“The council should be aware that it will carry huge responsibility for any accident related to coach parking other than in officially designated areas. We urge the council to stop stonewalling this problem as they have been doing for years and act immediately to provide a 21st century coach parking provision on a suitable site for our city.”

Of course, with no facilities provided for the drivers, they are forced to resort to urinating and even defecating behind their vehicles which is an all too regular sight for local residents.

“Furthermore the volume of coach parking encourages lorries to park here – there is no HGV provision either. As a result the whole area resembles a motorway service station without the services and not the beautiful residential neighbourhood that it actually is and deserves to remain.

“Surely coach travel should be regarded as ‘green’ and with the Green Party doing everything they can to discourage the use of cars proper provision for coaches and their drivers is essential. The current provision could lead to questions on health and safety

grounds since the drivers spend many hours with no suitable rest area, food or toilets.

“We understand there is reluctance on the part of some companies to go to Brighton with these non-existent facilities but if these were in place they would send many more thus increasing business for the city in many different ways.

The Green administration transport spokesman Councillor Ian Davey said: “It’s been a problem which previous administrations have failed to deal with. Like park and ride, the city has struggled and never found a suitable site for a coach park. There are insufficient funds to establish a permanent coach park at Black Rock.”

Councillor Davey promised to review whether there was a way to look again at this option. At the same meeting, another member of the residents association, Rosemary Shepherd, presented a petition about the inadequate coach parking provision.

She said: “We are asking the council to address with the utmost urgency the inadequacy of these facilities. We feel that it is a disgrace that a major tourist city such as Brighton and Hove has only 42 spaces. The subject is mentioned twice in the draft City Plan with no timescale indicated. This matter is urgent before there is a major accident in Roedean Road.”■

All too often young people find themselves in a catch-22 situation where they need experience to get a position, but employers aren’t able to offer meaningful opportunities for young people to learn about the workplace. Too many roles advertised as ‘work experience’ or ‘internships’ do not help employees develop their skills, or

COLLEGE’S AWARDS NIGHT

A dyslexic teenager has won a college’s top award.

Katrina Watson, 19, overcame a number of obstacles while studying at City College Brighton and Hove and has since taken up a place at Bournemouth University to study occupational therapy.

She won City College’s overall achiever prize at the annual awards ceremony held at the Albion’s Amex Community Stadium. She said: “Getting this award has made me really happy and I have to give so much credit to my amazing tutors who helped me achieve my dream of getting to university.”

She has lived independently since the age of 16, often in difficult financial circumstances. Despite her dyslexia and not always being able to afford the bus to college, her attendance was excellent and she achieved distinctions. She also helped others who had problems of their own.

Principal Lynn Thackway said: “This was my first City Achievers awards night as principal and it was so inspiring to hear the stories of what these young people have achieved, often against the odds.

They sum up everything that the college is about.

“We’re committed to creating opportunities for young people in Brighton and Hove so that they can find their niche, pursue their passions and thrive in their future careers.”

■ COUNCILLOR ACCUSED OF FAILING TO TREAT PEOPLE WITH RESPECT A Brighton councillor has been accused of breaking a code of conduct by being rude about the volunteers running a community association. Lynda Hyde, who represents the Rottingdean Coastal ward, faces a disciplinary hearing on Thursday 8 November to answer the charge.

She is accused of having said that members of Saltdean Community Association were “only in it for themselves” as she left a meeting at the end of May. Councillor Hyde told the investigating officer that she had been misunderstood amid the noise. In reply to a colleague she had said: “Residents have said to me they are only in it for themselves.”

Her accusers include two Liberal Democrats, Liz Lee and Simon Doyle, who help run the community association. But Liz Lee has insisted that the complaint was not motivated by party politics.

Councillor Hyde, a Conservative, has offered to apologise for any misunderstanding.

The independent investigation concluded that she did not breach the councillors’ code of conduct by failing to treat others with respect. It will be up to a cross-party standards panel made up of her fellow councillors to decide the matter.

■ GOVERNMENT MINISTER TO VISIT BRIGHTON DURING EXPORT WEEK Trade Minister Lord Green of Hurstpierpoint is coming to Brighton to encourage businesses to export more.

The former Lancing College pupil is supporting the government’s export agency UK Trade and Investment (UKTI) in its efforts to improve international trade.

UKTI is teaming up with business organisations like Coast to Capital and visiting bodies like Brighton and Hove City Council as it organises events for Export Week next week (Monday 12 November to Friday 16 November). t falls to few people to be able to change the law. But the MP for Brighton Kemptown, Simon Kirby, has a rare chance this week. He would be the first to agree that he can’t do it by himself.

But he looks as though he has persuaded fellow MPs – across all parties – that people are misusing the blue badges issued to disabled people to make it easier for them to park.

Pavilion Contemporary pays homage to opulence at Brighton’s Royal Pavilion

T

he Lost Pagodas mark the launch of Pavilion Contemporary, a major three year initiative at the Royal Pavilion. Internationally acclaimed artist Geraldine Pilgrim has created a series of site-specific installations around the palace which echo visually the essence of the Pavilion’s spirit – opulence, with a hint of naughtiness – and celebrate George IV’s passions for food, music and love. These installations take the form of four stunning new pagodas which will entrance visitors with music, light, reflections and delicate lace patterning. They are in situ for six months.

The pagoda represented the high point of ‘chinoiserie’ taste in England: among George IV’s extravagant commissions for his royal residence were six gilded porcelain pagodas, made to dazzle his guests in the Music Room. These three-dimensional pagodas stood against the rich red wall panels, embellished with painted gold pagodas and Chinese scenes. The originals now form part of the Royal Collection at Buckingham Palace, moved there

by Queen Victoria in the 1840s.

However, two magnificent ceramic pagodas similar to the original creations were purchased by the Royal Pavilion in 1950.

Geraldine Pilgrim has won acclaim for her site-specific installations that respond to the architecture and history of buildings and abandoned, ancient sites. She was intrigued by the story of the porcelain pagodas and has created installations that temporarily replace the ‘lost’ four.

These highly imaginative contemporary art works – Sparkle, Reflection, Chaser and Translucence – enhance their exotic context and should not be missed.

In the Long Gallery, which runs between the Music Room and the Banqueting Room, Sparkle is a crystal pagoda chandelier, built on a brasswired frame trimmed with crystals, drops and chains. Alternate layers are lit by six chandelier-sized lights, one on each point of the ‘roofs’, and on the ‘rooftop’ a purpose-built chandelier with 12 arms creates a full chandelier

splendid structure inspired by reflections from the magnificent set of copperware pans on display. It consists of nine mirrored sections, each layer bearing heaps of gleaming cutlery. George IV would have approved of this pagoda, as he was delighted with the design and equipment of his new kitchen – one of the most innovative of its time. He would escort guests into the Great Kitchen as a continuation of their tour of the Pavilion’s public apartments.

In the Music Room, Chaser is a multi-coloured pagoda, with inbuilt miniature carousels, trimmed with traditional fairground lights, timed so that they slowly turn on a revolve to the sound of fairground music. This would have appealed greatly to George IV also, as one of his great passions was music. The King’s own band entertained guests in the Music Room, and King George would often contribute to the evening’s entertainment with popular airs, accompanying himself on the pianoforte.

Translucence, in the first floor North Gallery, is a pagoda with lace stretched taut over the metal framework, and delicate patterning at each level.

It is lit within by blue light, creating a translucent, ethereal lace effect, and shadows echoing the decor of this space. The North Gallery was used as a breakfast room by George IV’s resident guests. The original lavish decoration has been accurately recreated, and the walls are painted in vivid azure blue, overlaid with a lacy trelliswork of cut-out strips of paper, block-printed in an imitation of bamboo.

The Pavilion Contemporary project will run until 2015. Each year, the Royal Pavilion will commission a different artist of high standing to create work for this palace, to be shown during the winter period.

Each artist will engage with the challenge of creating surprising and intriguing imagery that is inspired by this spectacular environment, and reveal some of the hidden histories of this unique and extraordinary building.

I

stopped at the Sussex Square petrol station on my way home from the gym. I was sweaty, hungry, tired, and not ‘with it’ at all. All I wanted was to buy petrol and disappear back into the rain.

But when I opened the door, a lovely, fragile yet so energetic old lady welcomed me in with a big smile.

Not a big deal, you might think. But this lady actually made me feel welcome. For a moment I forgot how I felt, and just smiled. I felt this person actually wanted to cheer me up and enjoyed putting a smile on my face. I kept going back for more of these enlightening moments with this cheerful lady. I had to know who she was and whether she ran the place.

PRIZE WINNING

It turned out I had met a lady who has won several customer service prizes and who has worked at the petrol station for the last 27 years. Luckily for all of us she was happy to share her story.

Elaine Leaney was born 81 years ago in Bristol to an ex-Aston Villa player father and musician mother.

Elaine’s dad was a strict sportsman. Her mum gave up her career in singing and playing piano to get married, but brought Elaine up with music. At the age of seven Elaine and her parents moved to Birmingham.

Elaine changed her career and study plans so many times that in the end her father decided that further studies were not for her. At 14 years old, Elaine started her career in customer services instead.

In her first customer service job at ‘Louise’s’ in Birmingham, Elaine was so successful that the manager struggled to pay all her commission.

Elaine and her manager came up with an agreement that Louise’s would only pay her commission every month, while her basic salary would be paid every three months. This way they could afford to keep her!

Elaine enjoyed her customer service job because serving people was in her nature, and she was also

able to spend all her tea and dinner times singing.

Actress Dora Bryan used to own Claridges Hotel by Brighton seafront. Dora accommodated Elaine and her mother for £10 per week, and after a while, Brighton and Hove City Council heard about Elaine’s case and offered her an affordable house.

LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS

Today, Elaine says she doesn’t feel like she missed out on anything. She considers herself a Jack-of-all-trades, master of none. She wanted to do other things, like dancing, and at the age of 17 she went to Elizabeth Thompson mannequin school for a year. When asked about the length of her hair, Elaine just lifted her hat and let her long blonde hair drop to her waistline. She was immediately booked for shows and an ‘A’ certificate.

Despite mannequin jobs, Elaine carried on working hard within customer services. Even her father paid attention to his daughter’s hardworking attitude and suggested she work for herself. When Elaine was 30 they bought a grocery shop next door to their home.

When her dad died, Elaine was forced to sell the shop and her mother had to sell their house.

Together they moved to Brighton.

At the age of 40, Elaine opened a sweet and tobacco shop at College Place, but the setbacks continued. Due to the hotel next door making space for parking, mice were on the move. And what could have been a more appetising place to move into than a sweet shop? Elaine described

In her opinion, working is something we are put into this world to do and we should do the best we can in everything. If you don’t have work, Elaine advises you to remember the things that money can’t buy: your family and memories. She continues, “Trying and making an effort is better than not doing anything. At least you tried. Then you just pick yourself up and think that tomorrow is another day for you to try again!”

Elaine has been working seven days a week for 26 years and only last year cut down her hours to six days a week.

Being open minded and the joy of working with young, enthusiastic people has kept Elaine going.

She has a few words to say about today’s customer service: “I’m afraid it’s not up to my standards.” Elaine gives an example from her own experience when she stopped for petrol in a spotless and lovely place, that is except for the abrupt staff behind the counter. “That little extra makes a world of difference to the customer. If you’ve got a rude attitude, they will not go back.”

Her advice on excellent customer service is very clear: “Don’t be abrupt. Say please, thank you very much, good morning, et cetera. You’ve got to be interested in other people. Offer something extra. Help, advise and gain a smile by saying: ‘What can I do for you?’”

he countdown to Frankie Cocozza’s debut album is on. With the EP set to be released on 5 November, anticipation has been building for what could be the make or break record of Frankie’s particularly tumultuous career. After being chucked off The X Factor, then redeeming himself somewhat in Celebrity Big Brother, Frankie lost a close friend and suddenly decided to clean up his act. In memory of his best friend, the late Connor Saunders, Frankie has vowed to concentrate on his music, with The Motorcycle making waves this week. A teaser for the slightly oddly named single has been tantalising the internet, gaining mixed reactions. Some fans can’t get enough of Frankie, exclaiming: “Been waiting a year for this, and words can’t describe how excited I am.” Yet others seemed less enthused; a recent ‘Ask Frankie’ twitter session descended into farce last week as users sent the floppy haired Woodingdean lad more than a fair share of abuse. Still we’re undecided about the new single in the office so far; it kind of follows in the same vein as other indie male crooners around at the moment, but perhaps suits a slightly younger audience. hat to make of the “Gus out” brigade? With the poor results of late, there can be said to be mutterings in the pubs and workplaces of the city regarding Gus Poyet’s job security, or to put it bluntly whether he could or should move on. To cast light on this slightly puzzling phenomena we can look to Ancient Rome and the cult of the soothsayers.

Self-appointed doom mongers would traipse the streets of Ancient Rome declaiming the end of the world, much in the way old chaps in flat caps used to walk around with “Is this a serious “The End Is Nigh” scrawled on a badly made placard. In reality, the sign of trouble or world rarely ended and they were merely a blip along tolerated as amusing distractions by most of the populous. Do these the way to the modern day Cassandras have a point? Has Gus gone as far as he promised land” can with the Albion?

The sensible answer has to be surely, he has only just got started. Admittedly there has been a poor run of results and the team look particularly low on confidence, goals are not being scored and that’s when fans and club get twitchy. Three years into a very successful stewardship of the club it’s such a shame that a poor run of form leads to what seems a rush to judgement, which perhaps should be of no surprise in these days of instant media and the incessant demand for rolling news about the team. Is this healthy? Arguably not, the Seagulls sit comfortably in mid table, there is a transfer window just seven weeks away and this is a club that usually shows cool, calm and collected management which has worked so far – there is no rush. Perhaps a loan signing might lift things as suggested in this column last month but let’s not get all Dad’s Army about things and run around like corporal Jones shouting “don’t panic” whilst perpetuating the opposite.

Fortunately, most fans hear the “Gus out” chatter and put it into perspective, there will always be people who don’t like the style of play – great when it works, frustrating when it doesn't, and the glass half empty types who just see the negatives in everything. Perhaps if you are in the pub and discussing the manager’s job you might want to relax, have another drink, and you’ll see two glasses – one half empty and one half full. Drink up, the world is not about to end. Gus gets it and most supporters are just that – supporters. So hopefully this is just a few Cassandras having their moment in the sun. The only cautionary note to remember is that in Pompei, Cassandra was right.

Players and staff will avoid shaving their top lip this November to help raise awareness and funds for Prostate Cancer UK, the Football League’s Official Charity Partner for the 2012/13 season.

The global movement has the full support of the Football League’s 72 member clubs and raised around £22 million last year, with over 250,000 UK men adorning a variety of weird and wonderful tashes.

One in nine men will develop prostate cancer at some stage in their life and every hour someone dies from the disease.

Female supporters are urged to play their part by convincing male friends and family to participate.

Fans of each club are encouraged to sign up to their respective Movember team – Albion’s is BHA Mo Bros – and the challenge is on to see which set of supporters can raise the most.

Collectively, the aim is to beat the total raised by professional football clubs during 2011, which stood at £50,000.

Stuart Christie, head of AITC Health said: “It is fantastic to see everyone at the club get behind Movember in a big way this year.

It is a fun and simple way to raise awareness about men’s health and, more specifically, help raise funds for research into prostate cancer.

The Guardian, the BBC and the liberal left used the phone-hacking scandal and Leveson to attack Murdoch and Sky, and Rupert Murdoch’s attempt to consolidate what they saw as his excessive power and influence in the media.

Then, like a backhand winner in tennis, the right-ofcentre press and TV picked up on the Savile scandal to retaliate at the BBC and the Guardian.

The media as a whole are using the scandals to have a go at their philosophical and political enemies. The media are their own worst enemies.

For God and the media’s sake, let’s discuss the real issues debate! Why the Guardian and Roy Greenslade et al were against local democratic TV was beyond me until I thought this through, and it’s obvious. If you're pro-BBC you don’t want plurality, do you? Over to you. But let’s debate the real issues!

Bill’s Shorts PARKING FANTASTIQUE I was meeting a woman in a café for a business meeting. Sat by the window, I looked out and saw a car reverse perfectly into a space which had literally six inches to the car in front and behind. It was the most amazing parking I have ever seen.

She waltzed into the café and came up to me and said “Are you Bill?”, I said “Yes... by the way, that’s the best bit of parking I have ever seen”.

o you ever have social situations where you cannot believe how a seemingly innocent scenario has escalated into something quite unpleasant or embarrassing? This happened to me recently at a post office. The queue was taking an inordinately long time, when a lady turned to me and said “This is taking a long time, isn’t it?”

She just wanted me to say “yes”. I am pretty sure this woman did not wish me to offer my genuine opinion on this. She wasn’t interested in whether our relative perspectives on time actually meant that I didn’t in fact think it was a long time at all. She just wanted me to agree. I duly obliged.

She then said: “This girl behind the counter is very slow, isn’t she?”. Again, I do not believe that this woman wished for me to assess this girl’s efficiency, or to discuss whether a division of labour system might be implemented in order to speed this up. She just wanted me to agree. Wishing to smooth the time that I had remaining of my social interaction with this woman, I again agreed.

A more extreme version of this occurred a few weeks previously: I was driving home in the middle of the afternoon when I stopped behind a van at a traffic light. The traffic light turned green, as is the normal procedure for these things, but the van did not move. I waited for a bit, and then realised that he must not have seen the light change. I gave him a toot on the horn.

Until we arrived at the next set of traffic lights... I pulled up alongside the van, and the guy gestured to me to roll my window down. I did so. I have no idea why I did this.

Maybe, after my helpful beep, I thought the man would thank me for highlighting the change of the light and enabling him to continue his journey that little bit quicker.

He did not.

“Who the hell do you think you are beeping me mate? You ever beep me again and I will knock your head off, you understand me?”

This seemed unlikely. A number of things had to happen in order for this threat to contain any credibility. I would have to see him again, he would have to recognise me, he would have to arrive at a traffic light just before me and I would have to beep him. Highly unlikely, and with this calculation quickly completed I took this opportunity to engage in some fighting talk.

“Oh, don’t be a moron! I thought you hadn’t seen the light change!”

Pretty strong stuff, I think you’ll agree. He then responded with: “I had clearly stalled! You could tell by the way the vehicle struggled!”

At this point, I realised we were in the unfortunate situation of explaining our side of the argument logically while also maintaining our aggressive stance.

“I wasn’t aware you had stalled! The vehicle did not display signs of stalling, it just remained stationary you piece of s***.”

Job done? He decided to call my bluff, however: “Pull over up there and let’s sort this out.”

Now I’m assuming he wanted some sort of fight.

Which would definitely sort it out. As he was caving my head in I would probably have admitted fault in this particular instance.

But this is, of course, an assumption on my part. For all I know, he wanted us to pull over so that he could show me how the vehicle had stalled, and signs to spot this in the future.

At this point the light turned green. He didn’t notice. I saw my chance. I pulled away quickly.

“Looks like you’ve stalled again, moron!”

Before you start emailing to tell me how I am a hero to the common man and a beacon of inspiration for the oppressed, frightened majority, please remember that I spent the next minutes of the journey nearly in tears at the thought of a light being red and the van catching me up again. Catch of the day Behind the scenes of The Grand Hotel with Executive Chef Alan White

A

s the iconic Brighton hotel continues with its £5 million refurbishment, find out what goes on behind the scenes at The Grand from key members of its staff.

Alan White, Executive Chef, says: “My job role is to design all the menus for the whole of the hotel, including the restaurant, room service and bar menus, so it’s very creative. I also choose what food to purchase and train the relevant staff.

I also put together the breakfast menu which is now being used across all De Vere hotels.

I trained in Paris as a classical chef and have worked my way up from Sous Chef to Head Chef in

various five-star hotels. I even did the food for first class British Airways passengers and for a private airline company, cooking for Robbie Williams and the Sultan of Brunei. I have two AA Rosettes, which I am really proud of.

When I came to The Grand in 2005 I updated the hotel menu and brought it into the 21st century. I’m also adamant that we use all fresh, local ingredients; our butcher is in Lewes and our cheese is from Sussex.

We’ve got a great kitchen team of 25 here at The Grand. I like to tease the new recruits sometimes by asking them to list ‘leg of salmon’ as our catch of the day.

My team and I cannot wait for the new seafood restaurant to open early next year. It’s going to look unrecognisable from how it is now, with a huge centrepiece ice bar which is going to be a crustacea bar as well as showing off our catch of the day. All of the fish will be sourced from within a four-mile radius of the hotel and will have been caught that morning. The restaurant will have a market feel and people can completely customise their dish – they can not only choose which fish they would like but we are going to have scales at the bar to weigh out custom portions.

Our very knowledgeable chefs will be on hand to offer advice on how the fish is ideally cooked and what accompanies

it best, but the choice is ultimately up to the customer.

If that sounds a bit daunting, then we are also going to have a traditional menu, which will feature some of my favourite dishes: fish pie, the best ever fish finger sandwich and a Monkfish tikka.

Don’t fancy fish? We’ll have a nice bit of locally sourced beef or lamb for you along with some fantastic vegetarian options.”

he joys of living in the glorious Kemp Town Enclosures are manifold.

The gardens themselves are a delight and afford residents the luxury of living in style with outdoor spaces on the scale of a stately home.

We are very well served with public transport and there also exists that combination that is so quintessentially English – community and reserve: neighbours nod and acknowledge politely, secure in the fact that we live in one of the city’s best locations, but we seldom get involved. It’s rather like the reading room of a gentlemen’s club where nodding is permitted but silence is the rule.

There are other things that mark us out and after a year there I have joined one club which I have long resisted. As a passionate supporter of local retail I try to shop with small independent businesses. But since ridding myself of four wheels it has become less convenient – greener yes, easier, no.

For the buying of dull and heavy stuff it is ideal, and the delivery charge is far less than a cab would cost. There was something cheering about seeing someone else struggle down the steps with 24 x 2.5 litre bottles of mineral water and endless toilet rolls. I will still buy my fresh foods locally when I can, but for convenience I am now a fan of the delivery service and a member of yet another of the Square’s clubs.

There might have been a certain poignancy to the scene had his otherwise oblivious friends and family been gathered for the announcement – alas, we were his only audience.

Also, I imagine if that night’s wardrobe were an indicator of his day-to-day fashions, his mother probably had an inkling he would not be bringing home a wife. The DJ seemed spectacularly unenthused by his job, although sporadically entertained himself by making fun of my jumper over the microphone. I recall “crew of Deadliest Catch” was a comparison bandied about. Apparently Kate Moss had been a little less authentic when it came to choosing a vintage cable knit.

Anyway, based on my enjoyment of seaside novelties and the hope of living somewhere a bit more varied, I moved here.

When I was a young woman, to not send a hand-written note, even for the most trifling of gifts would have been utterly unthinkable. Sadly, these days the young seem to think a phone call or “email” will suffice, and sometimes one is lucky to get that. When I sent my only cousin a silver cup for her daughter's christening in 1982, I received no thanks of any kind. Needless to say, I never spoke to her again for the rest of her life and to this day refuse to visit her grave.

This is what Debrett’s has to say on the subject: “A thank you note should be written on a rectangular sheet

of ivory paper, in black ink, addressed to the person being thanked by title and surname.

While it is permissible to mention the gift, the cost should never be referred to, even obliquely.”

Of course, a properly-bred person will usually respond to a thank you note with a thank you note. This can go on for several years, and indeed I am still in correspondence with a Mr. Douglas Spence of Folkestone over a thank you note for a package of Kendal Mint Cake from the winter of 1953.

was just wondering how society would function if a law was passed that everything had to be round. If cars were round, and houses, and all packaging, on what level would this impact on society?

Would the saying ‘cut corners’ disappear around a bend in Roundsville? There are two round cafes in Brighton; the Rotunda and The Terraces. How do they compare spatially to that of the compartmentalised square? A visit to a rotating round restaurant whilst hula hooping in the middle could leave you feeling like you were just going round in circles. I once pushed a scooter around the inside of an art gallery in Liverpool for 24 hours with Radio

1 blasting out of a pierced oil drum in the centre, with beams of light blazing through the holes. On the wall was a huge 1950s National Geographic map purchased from an antique shop with a slightly intimidating Alsatian dog in the doorway, on Lark Lane. Cramp, boredom, and everyone disappearing to sleep in the middle of the night left me feeling like I had bitten off more than I was mentally prepared to chew, even the official Guinness World Records adjudicator was falling asleep slumped in the corner of the gallery. But these mind journeys are great experiences, even if shambolic. I am not trying to present a one

A

fter such a dismal summer it came as a real surprise that we were able to dine al fresco at Pelham House in Lewes recently.

It was early October but the sun was strong so we thought ‘Why not?’.

Mr L and I were on our way to see Glyndbourne’s production of Rusalka and I thought it might be wise to have lunch in Lewes beforehand. To be truthful, I had lunched at Pelham House only a few days prior and had such a marvellous meal of pork pie and bouillabaisse that I was chomping at the bit to return.

Pelham House has a pretty interior with lots of carved panelling and character. But the lure of the terrace in the sun was strong so we sat looking down the steeply terraced garden watching children playing at a wedding.

The menu is fixed at £25 for three courses and Mr L is not one to shirk his responsibilities when accompanying me on such an occasion. To start he boldly chose a soft cheese and beetroot terrine. It was pretty as a picture, all pale pink and cream stripes, and he loved it. I took a taste and agreed it was very good. I chose tempura fish with a simply deliciously dressed salad, hints of Japanese, that fine balance of savoury and sweet that sounds simple but is so difficult to get right. This was spot on. The batter was light and crisp, and the various blobs of dressing all deserved a place on the plate rather than simply being there to tart things up.

When it came to a main course we both wanted the same thing. Normally I would allow my guest to choose and then opt for something different. But this time the allure of a pheasant ballotine with rabbit croquettes and bramble berries was too much to resist. And it was worth compromising my rules for once. The pheasant was moist and tender, the stuffing rich and deeply

earthy, and the sauce sticky and rich, set off with tiny balls of lightly pickled beetroot. I ate it as slowly as I could, not wanting the experience to end.

But end it did and we had the quandary of whether to have a pudding. I promise that there was little debate; we both headed back to the menu with gusto.

I also ordered a side dish of cavolo nero with barley and oxtail butter. My word, what a lovely dish – the rich, bitter iron of the cavolo worked so well with the creamy barley and the savoury butter.

Mr L chose Spanish-style cinnamon doughnuts with a shot of something foamy and mysterious, and nut creams to dip into. He said it was delicious but thought that given the shape of the doughnuts and the presentation on a piece of slate, it could have looked better. Mr L has a terrible imagination but I’m afraid I had to agree.

My knickerbocker glory on the other hand was a glorious sight: a tall sundae glass filled with ice cream, whipped cream, rich cake, cherries soaked in booze and gooseberry compote. And yes, I chose it because I love gooseberries. It was delicious, nostalgic, sweet, sour and packing a slight alcoholic kick. It was also served with a proper sundae spoon so extra marks for that.

At the end of lunch we called a cab and headed off to Glyndebourne feeling very happy. The truth is, Pelham House has a restaurant serving the kind of sophisticated food that I would expect to pay a lot more for. The main course alone in other country house hotels would unashamedly be put on the menu at £25, the total of what we each paid for three courses.

We took the bus to Lewes, hopped off, crossed the road and dined – it was as easy as that, and I cannot wait to return very soon.

Light bites The Curlew appoints new head chef The Curlew, the Michelin-starred restaurant located at Bodiam, East Sussex, has made the exciting appointment of Andrew Scott as Head Chef.

Thirty-year-old Andrew has spent his entire professional life in Michelin-starred kitchens, training at Gloucestershire’s Lords Of The Manor and Cumbria’s L’Enclume before, in 2008, joining Mallory Court. In 2010, Andrew was promoted to the position of Head Chef at the Warwickshire restaurant.

On his new role, Andrew enthused: “It is impossible not to be excited by The Curlew. It’s a beautiful restaurant, the kitchen set-up is brilliant, and I’ll be working in a local area that’s renowned for superb ingredients, products and suppliers. My cooking philosophy is all about making people happy. I’ve always tried to put my love of food on the plate; I enjoy eating and I like to see others enjoy eating.

Fundamentally, I’m committed to modern British dishes, great flavour combinations and working alongside good suppliers.”

The Curlew earned a Michelin Star in the 100th Anniversary Michelin Guide joining an elite

collection of 143 restaurants.

The Michelin Guide described the East Sussex restaurant as: “Stylish with laid-back lounge, cow motif wallpaper and bespoke leather banquettes. Concise British menu offers accomplished, classically based dishes, interpreted in modern ways. Preparation is careful, execution is precise and presentation is appealing.”

The continued vision of owners, Mark and Sara Colley, is to run a national standard restaurant serving a local community passionate about food and dining. The Curlew aims to bridge the gap between gastropub and fine dining, serving good food, presented with imagination and flair in a welcoming and casual atmosphere.

Brighton Santa Dash: Pass It On Africa The annual Brighton Santa Dash 5km fun run hits the seafront again on Saturday 8 December in aid of Pass It On Africa (PIOA). The entry fee is £14 and includes your Santa suit. This event is managed by InMotion Sport who cover all the costs, most of which are recouped by your entry fee.

“We are delighted to manage this event each year and support PIOA,” says John Gladwin from InMotion Sport. “They do fantastic work with the school projects in Africa so we urge all runners to try and raise at least £10 sponsorship each to support their worthy cause.”

All of the fundraising goes to PIOA. The charity is hoping to raise £3,800 this year to complete the build of the Fresh Start Skills Centre in The Gambia.

So far PIOA has awarded £58,880 to the skills centre project. If they reach their target the centre will be able to officially open in January, providing vocational training and primary education to 300 vulnerable children annually.

Light Up A Life: the Martlets Hospice Christmas is full of nostalgia and memories but no matter how much time has passed since the loss of a loved one it can often be a difficult time. This is something they know only too well at the Martlets Hospice, so every year, around Christmas time, they hold ‘Light Up A Life’ ceremonies.

Antonia Sheperd, one of the organisers, has seen firsthand how many people find great comfort in coming together with others to remember and celebrate the memories of loved ones. The events aren’t religious and you don’t even need a connection with the Martlets to attend. All they ask is that you make a donation to the Hospice and dedicate it to the memory of the person you have lost.

THE SACRED FLAME

The elegance of Somerset Maugham’s writing is undeniable and the themes now timeless in this play from 1928, although then they must have been quite shocking. Part love story, part murder mystery, it certainly sets the audience thinking and the company keep the audience in rapt silence throughout, not wanting to miss a word. But as a piece of theatre it is in the words that it fails. Beautiful as they are, the whole is incredibly static, the cast only once or twice making use of the beautiful set. There were moments of indulgence too that make an already long play even longer, some unexplained fans and the cast setting the stage slowly to music.

Despite all this I came away having enjoyed the evening, and impressed

by Margot Leicester, Robert Demeger and Jamie de Courcey.

Bringing his award-nominated show to the Brighton Comedy Fringe, Trent demonstrated the joie de vivre of a fringe – supporting and celebrating the excellent unorthodox shows and giving a voice and platform to the unclassifiable. Utilising (to the point of almost forming a double act with) his less-than-trustworthy laptop and PowerPoint, Trent’s show foxed and entertained, including tantrums and watermelons. With comedy proving such a popular live event these days it might be worth re-issuing notices that this isn’t always an interactive sport. But audience over-enthusiasm aside, this was engaging, tightly written and performed, and highly original.

asily one of, if not the most, important band of the last 25 years – Chuck D, Flavour Flav et al have lost none of their potency, treating a packed house to a high-powered, high-decible show that showcased exactly why they are the kings of hip-hop; their revolutionary fusion of driving grooves, political lyrics and flashes of wit and turntable wizardry (via DJ Lord) enraptured all. At first, it seemed the evening might degenerate into a self-indulgent celebration of the band (who are celebrating 25 years as PE), but after a rambling intro, the band got down to business with an extended run through many of their best and greatest tracks. Live on stage they bring that energy, that incredibly raucous sound (that the Dome admirably managed to accommodate) that is largely underpinned by those magical James Brown-esque grooves, and the vocal play of Chuck D and Flavour Flav, perfectly in synch with each other. At one stage Chuck D reminded us that his and Flav’s combined ages are 105, but that they are in no mood to sacrifice their lifelong ambitions to bring the curtain down on racism, segregation and inequality.

BRIGHTON NIGHTS STAGE: STORIES FROM AN INVISIBLE TOWN Much-loved emerging Welsh artist Hugh Hughes presents a brand new show at the Brighton Dome Stories From An Invisible Town is a collection of tales and anecdotes that guide the audience through the childhood of Hugh Hughes, as told by the man himself (with a little help from brother Derwyn and sister Delyth). As the siblings delve into their shared childhood memories, skeletons come tumbling out of closets, with unpredictable and hilarious consequences.

The trio, from Llangefni in Wales, begun their journey into the past after Hugh returned to the family home to help his mum move house.

It’s not just the Hughes family that have an input, as much of the show has been created using live and online audiences to collate the narrative over a period of time. The live show is presented alongside a tapestry of short films, photographs, animations, maps, diagrams, audio clips and poems – all brought together on the web.

Hughes has already developed three deeply personal and imaginative shows – Floating, Story Of A Rabbit and 360. The atmosphere is hilarious, heart-felt, fun and relaxed; there’s real variety in what’s happening on stage – sometimes the audience are shown videos or listening to audio or watching the siblings dramatically recreate moments from their family past.

It consists of three episodes of around 40 minutes, separated by an interval of around 10 minutes each. During these intervals, audio or video is sometimes played but audience members are free to leave the auditorium.

This journey of discovery stretches back to 2004 when Hugh left his small hometown. Since then these three shows have opened to acclaim at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and worldwide success including a sold out run at the Sydney Opera House and visits to festivals in the USA, Colombia, Finland, Singapore and Russia.

The trilogy was presented as one complete show as The Wonderful World Of Hugh Hughes at the Barbican and then in autumn 2010, alongside screenings of the film Hugh Hughes: How I Got Here.

Hansel & Gretel To mark the bi-centenary of the first publication of the Brothers Grimm fairytale, Hansel And Gretel comes to the New Venture Theatre as a new adaptation of abandonment, resilience and desperation.

Possibly inspired by the Great Famine between 1315 and 1317, it’s a tale that has long captured the imaginations of children and adults everywhere. Many are familiar with the plot and the sinister undertones of child abduction, cannibalism and the lengths people will go to when hungry – not to mention endangerment.

This magical new production aims to remain close to the spirit of the original fairytales, including the darker elements that reflect the sense that something is amiss in society and that we are only a small crisis away from abandoning all morality completely.

From acclaimed playwright Helen Nelder, who also teaches and leads workshops on drama, creative writing and scriptwriting, this is still a story for children (as well as adults) so the production will be full of Christmas warmth, humour and sweets.

“I

like the abstract, the distortion in music – there is always somewhere to hide in that. But I got this idea that the more abstract the music is, the more ‘Emperor’s New Clothes’, you can tell if your audience are not hip to it, or their ears aren’t tuned to it. And I figured if I made a pop record there would be nowhere to hide, it would be fully realised. I hadn’t been there before.” So says Jason Pierce about his recent album, Sweet Heart, Sweet Light; a more poppy affair than his previous six albums.

The musical style of Spiritualized relies heavily on sustained pedal notes and drones, much of the earlier work ‘shoegazing’ in style. Their landmark 1997 album, Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space (which featured a giant pill as part of the artwork) saw the emergence of blues and gospel combined with a wall of sound aesthetic. As Pierce had said at the time of Spaceman 3: “I was taking drugs to make music to take drugs to.

“When we started making music I liked the bands that sounded like the Rolling Stones, but chewed acid and kinda got it wrong,” he says, “rather than the music of the ‘70s when they tried to explain the inner workings of the mind and it kinda lost its way. It’s weird, the more pop it gets, the more psychedelic it gets. The more straight it is, the more odd it sounds."

Heavily influenced by the garage/psychedelia bands of the late ‘60s, as well as Krautrock and the work of Phil Spector, Brian Wilson and The Beatles, Pierce’s music is also informed by recent illnesses that have threatened his existence. In 2005 he nearly died from double pneumonia, while earlier this year he had to undergo treatment for his liver. “I found out I had long-term liver disease. My liver was pretty gone, basically.” His situation ended up working to his benefit, as he made the new album at home while undergoing treatment. “I decided to make a record on these drugs...”

Val Aviv’s Deep & Meaningless Neil Spencer has been in the company of so many legends, and now he’s meeting me. Needless to say, I’m overjoyed! I was born in 1978; the other big event that year was Neil becoming the editor of NME magazine and with him running the ship it became the most influential music magazine of all time.

Neil’s a writer, and what I’m really excited about is that he’s also an astrologer, or as he puts it “I’m a writer, who writes about astrology, but who also writes about other things too”...

Neil, you made NME hot stuff! How did you do it?

“Well, first of all, it wasn’t just me, I had a talented team of people around me.”

Did everything just seem to evolve naturally?

“I think in the late 1970s there was a chemistry at work and somehow the music was the glue that held everything together. Music was a far more central part of peoples lives than it is now. I don’t know what the glue is that binds people together these days; it’s probably something like Facebook.”

On your website (www.neilspencer.co.uk) you give examples of 12 musicians and their Sun signs, which is a fascinating read. When looking at birth charts in general, are there specific aspects which you’ve often found to be the quintessential sign of a budding musician?

“I don’t think you can tell from a horoscope whether or not someone is a musician or not. Other astrologers would say differently, Liz Green might say that Neptune – ruler of Pisces – is strong in any musician’s chart. I don’t think that’s true.”

Could it be Neptune and Venus – rulers of Libra and Taurus?

“Well, Neptune and Venus could be the sign of a painter, a filmmaker or someone who romanticises drugs. You wouldn’t necessarily say exclusively music.”

Is there one star sign that stands out as being a musician?

“I’m completely struck by the number of Libran (Venus ruled) musicians in popular music.”

You don’t give consultations as an astrologer, why?

“I am a writer, I am an astrologer, I write about astrology but I also write about other things. I admire astrologers, but I can’t do it because it’s like becoming the parish priest; you take on people’s sins, you take on people’s psychological problems. So I can’t possibly do that, it’s just not me.”

How would you describe astrology?

“I think it’s a craft, like knowing how to be a carpenter and make a table. I don’t see it as a science and I don’t really think it’s an art either. It brings together a certain amount of indisputable, objective knowledge. Which is how long it takes Saturn to go round the Sun for example, whether it’s a full or new Moon, and I happen to think it’s perfectly reasonable to think that those things matter to those of us who inhabit the earth.

Of all the celebrities you’ve met, which were the most cosmic?

“Bob Marley. He had a very charismatic, larger than life presence. He was pretty awesome really.”
