An iconic painting of Brighton is on show for the first time in a century at Brighton Museum and Art Gallery. The watercolour, ‘Brighthelmston, Sussex’, was painted by the 19th century Romantic painter JMW Turner. It shows a view of the old Chain Pier and Kemptown seafront from the sea with the Royal Pavilion in the background. Turner visited Brighton in 1824 and completed several paintings of the town, but this is his only work featuring the Royal Pavilion. The painting was bought for the city earlier this year with money from the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Art Fund and the Royal Pavilion and Museums Foundation. It will be on display at Brighton Museum and Art Gallery until Sunday 22 April and again in 2013 as part of a bigger exhibition at the Royal Pavilion. To see Latest TV's coverage of the painting and interviews with those involved, go to thelatest.tv. Also on thelatest.tv, Brighton and Hove’s political programme, The Vote, debates the city’s hottest issues: parking, pedestrianisation, shopping and markets. Chris Todd from Friends Of The Earth questions Mary Portas’ plan for reviving city centres; Labour group leader Cllr Gill Mitchell looks at the importance of Park and Ride, and Conservative Cllr Andrew Wealls puts the case for retailers who are worried about high car parking charges and high business rates in the city. The Vote show is at thelatest.tv Bill Smith, Managing Director, Latest TV If you want to be part of Brighton’s TV channel come to our open democratic meetings at Latest MusicBar every Monday at 5.30pm.

Powered up Is nuclear power necessary & can we rely on natural resources? asks Bill Smith

“F

ukushima was the first significant nuclear incident in 25 years and has not caused a single fatality. Policymakers must respect public opinion but they must also respect facts, and the facts still favour nuclear power. Those facts warrant a better educational effort from industry, from governments and from journalists. Nuclear power will be even safer after Fukushima and will continue to mature as the world's premier non-carbon technology.” That was said by John Ritch, Director General of the World Nuclear Association. Scientists have also been down-playing the nuclear accidents – Jim Al-Khalili said on BBC Horizon: “Let’s get things into perspective. 20,000 people killed by the Tsunami but no deaths from Fukushima”. He continued: “I want to look at the facts coldly and non-emotionally.” Well, sorry but I don’t. 130,000 people have had to move from Fukushima – that’s like the whole population of Hove. We’ve also heard that Tokyo was at risk of evacuation. Now there are plans to have reactors fairly close to major cities in the UK. “We can't have a Tsunami”, say the scientists who are never wrong Thalidomide? Sleeping tablets? Leeches anyone?(What’s wrong with sleeping tablets and leeches? - Ed) More good news – instead of the buried nuclear reactors being radioactive for thousands of years they are now only reactive for hundreds of years. Transmutation, that’s called. Anyone for Bill’s science lessons? I can deliver them with scary Star Wars music, a white coat and a German accent. Now I’ve got nothing against scientists, I would say some of my best friends

are scientists but it sounds a bit patronising (if true). It’s just there are good ones and bad ones, emotional ones and non emotional ones, like with everything.

“Nuclear accidents can be prevented by embracing a future without it” NATURAL DISASTERS

I agree, we can’t have a tsunami. But we can have our own natural disasters. For instance, flooding can cause power shutdowns, even I understand that. So extensive flooding can disable the cooling process in nuclear reactors. Wasn’t that what happened in Fukushima? And remember Chernobyl? There was no tsunami there in Russia, but the argument seems to be, “well, they were Russian”. And we have had near-major disasters here already. Windscale, 1957, for instance. The industry solved that problem however by re-naming Windscale as Sellafield and hoping we don’t notice that nearby in Cumbria there is a reactor buried in concrete for I’m not sure how many hundreds of years. In the papers there’s been a lot about the unsightliness of wind turbines. I prefer them to the huge concrete cover known as the New Safe Confinement which is being built over the existing sarcophagus at Chernobyl from where 350,400 people were evacuated. More than

the whole population of Brighton. Oh, and Rosatom, the company that built Chernobyl, may be offering to build our nuclear reactors because the German or French companies lined up to build them have decided not to and the UK has no nuclear capability anymore.

NATURAL ALTERNATIVES

When I first came to Brighton I was passionately supportive of CND (Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament). My girlfriend went on marches and went to Greenham and I organised gigs in support. My friends published the Brighton Voice, avowedly anti-nuclear. We supported the nascent Greenpeace. Then we were seen as naïve idealists or hippies but now our views are the mainstream. 75 per cent of people in a recent poll are anti-nuclear. I think it was always a smokescreen for building weapons and what is everyone saying about Iran now? Greenpeace has 2,000 staff, operates in 40 countries, has global revenues of $200 million and assets of $40 million including its flagship “Rainbow Warrior”. Kumi Naidoo is the Executive Director of Greenpeace International. He says “nuclear power is dangerous, expensive and only supplies around 13 per cent of global electricity needs. Nuclear accidents can be prevented by embracing a future without it. Natural forms of energy are not only being explored but renewable growth is already out-stripping coal and nuclear worldwide and supplies about a fifth of the planet's energy needs. Backed by efficient energy use renewable energy sources render the debate over whether or not nuclear power is worth the risk, redundant. It is not necessary, period.”

Bill’s Shorts: What’s in them this week? ONE TO CHEER UP THE LEFT Well, we know that Cameron and co admired Murdoch and nicked Andy Coulson from him but it's a bit of a surprise to see them pinching an idea from him. Phone hacking. Now I know News International did it pretty well but The Coalition knows it can do better. So they are going to hack everybody in the whole country's emails and skype and every communication you make. It's to make us all feel safer so do you? Did you when News International did it?!!

TWO TO CHEER UP THE RIGHT 1. Nick Clegg launched the Liberal Democrat local election campaign saying “Lib Dems were delivering for ordinary people.” Well that's about right, students aren't ordinary! 2. Ed Miliband launched Labour's campaign saying Labour had “different values.” Brotherly love perhaps.

COMPASSION & SCIENCE

Nuclear accidents can happen here, and if it they do hundreds of thousands of people may have to move. Professor John Ritch seems to think that’s fine as long as no-one’s killed, but at Chernobyl, Fukushima and the many other nuclear accidents like Windscale, Mayak, Three Mile Island, Seversk, Tokaimura, and Macoule there have been some deaths but also massive mental health problems and alcoholism. Let me tell you Mr Nuclear Energy and Mr Let's Look At The Cold Facts, it is no little thing to lose your home. It's everything. It’s not just about death, it’s about losing whole communities. If the population of London had to be evacuated to Manchester would it be alright to say, “Oh, but it’s fine – there were no deaths”? Last week I wrote that we need compassion in care. Science, in my world, has to be equally compassionate. Bill Smith is Managing Editor of Latest 7/Homes magazine and a director of Latest TV. n

L7INTERVIEW 13 “Deeper Shade Of Blue is a band favourite. We love the video and we love performing it. We believe it was ahead of its time when first released and could stand up to the modern pop world of today.” It was announced that you will be playing in the Hyde Park extravaganza of PWL acts. Who are you most looking forward to catching up with again, and who are you most looking forward to seeing perform? “It’s fantastic to not only perform at PWL Hyde Park gig but to headline it is an honour. I’m looking forward to seeing Bananarama, Rick Astley, Sonia – and of course Kylie if she makes an appearance.” You won the Brits Award best live act in 2000. Feeling the pressure much? “I don’t personally feel the pressure from the industry. What is important is that we give our fans the best night they could ask for. We won awards because our fans wanted us and we are back because our fans want us again. We are all in a happy place right now.” What are the best and worst aspects of touring? “For me the best part of touring is travelling, meeting the fans and performing your own show every night. The worst is missing loved ones and my home.”

ONE STEP BEYOND Chart-toppers, ‘90s hit makers & dance-move single pioneers, Steps are back together again. Yay! Lee LatchfordEvans talks to Victoria Nangle about hitting the road again, gossip columns and a Steps West End musical

F

rom their first hit ‘5, 6, 7, 8’ back in 1997, Steps made an impact on the charts and went on to have a further 14 top five hits together. Supporting Britney Spears on her ‘Baby One More Time Tour’, winning the Brit award in 2000 for best live act, selling over 20 million records – these are all acts of pop royalty, so it was hardly surprising that when PWL announced they were assembling their favourite acts together for a party in Hyde Park Steps were asked to headline the show despite this being their first tour in ten years. Reunited, filming their own documentary series for Sky Living and with a brand new album on the way, pop’s darlings have returned. And their fans are loving them for it...

You all had a lot of gossip column inches in the past – are you all prepared for the scrutiny to return at such an intensity? “I don't feel the press really played a massive part in Steps’ success, we were never played on big radio stations and never really spoke about unless we had won an award or a number one. Our success spoke more than sleazy night club antic stories.” What do you reckon to the idea of a Steps musical hitting the West End a la Mama Mia stylee? “I would love a Steps musical to hit the West End – and I think we need to join forces with a top writer – a la Andrew Lloyd Webber maybe. I also think a great concept for the first couple of months would be if we were all in it but not playing ourselves [laughs].”

“It feels harder this time

round, but I’m not sure if that's just because we are 10 years older. Ha ha! ”

Who would you cast as you five if it went to Hollywood? “Cameron Diaz for Claire, Ben Affleck for me, Matt Damon for H, Christina Ricci for Lisa and Charlize Theron for Faye.”

How is it with all of you working together again? “It's fine. We are getting on great together and really looking forward to spending some time on the road.”

Do you enjoy coming to Brighton, to sing and to play? “Brighton is a great city and we have all enjoyed day trips and performances there over the years.”

How does preparing for this tour compare to preparing for the first tour you ever did together? “It feels harder this time round, but I’m not sure if that's just because we are 10 years older. Ha ha! We have not been easy on ourselves and we all think this could be the best tour we’ve ever done.”

I’ve been asked by a reader to include this, please forgive us: what Steps do you take to avoid Tragedy in your daily life? “Ha ha! No matter what happens always try and stay positive and remember there is always someone worse off than you in the world.”

You’ve got a lot of dancefloor fillers – classics – in your repertoire. Which is your favourite to perform and why?

Steps – The Ultimate Tour comes to the Brighton Centre on Tuesday 17 April, £35, Box Office: 01273 290131, www.brightoncentre.co.uk

Mark Brailsford predicts the unpredictable

P

redictions, predictions. A mugs game. If predicting the outcome of football matches was easy you would see more bookies on bicycles and when have you ever seen a bookie on a bicycle? Then again we could be in Italy, that would be easier. Odds aside, not even the boldest turf accountant would bet their house on who will make the play-offs. The potential play-off contenders go as far as halfway down the table. If you were a Watford, Hull or even a Derby fan, you would be looking at the table and wondering what would happen if your team went on a little run. It comes down to who has the nerve as much as the best squad or manager. The BBC Sport website has an excellent predictor on the Championship section of the website. I’ve had a go, and it has to be said it was complete guesswork but my top six consisted of Blackpool, West Ham, Birmingham and Middlesbrough (assuming that Reading finish runners up to Southampton) but only on goal difference. I made Albion a very close seventh because I was pessimistic. The reality is that it could be very, very tight. If the only certainty is doubt then I’m “It comes down to certain you can doubt my who has the nerve as prediction ability with some certainty, no doubt about it. So, much as the best assuming my predictions are bunkum, what is the likelihood squad or manager” of the Albion being in the shake up at the end of the season? Better than you might think. Why the optimism all of a sudden? Have I just turned into a Serie A betting syndicate? Nope. The evidence from previous years is instructive. There tends to always be a team who goes on a dazzling run and squeaks into the play-offs and one or two that fall away, sometimes spectacularly. I still have a feeling that Watford might come close as they have the muscle, Leicester are a surprise in that they spent so heavily and were everyone’s favourites at the start of the season. Then look at the teams sitting just below the Albion. Hull are blowing a little hot and cold but could still go on a run and Cardiff are not out of it either. But this is mitigated by Gus moving the Burnley game to Friday and the Reading game to Tuesday, giving the players a rest which could be a crucial advantage over rival teams. Then factor in the number of top ten teams who play each other in the classic six-pointer matches. Albion themselves face Birmingham and Reading. Luckily I’m not a betting man, otherwise there would be a few more bookies driving Bentleys around Brighton, but doubtlessly there will be some freak results during the run-in. Albion might beat Birmingham and lose to Watford for example. But the one result that would make me rush down the bookies for a flutter on Albion reaching the play-offs, is a victory at West Ham and I’ve got a feeling about that game, then all bets would be off. Finally, a glimpse at the fixture list for the last day of the season shows you how utterly unpredictable the last few games may be. Birmingham play Reading, West Ham play Hull and Watford take on Middlesbrough. I therefore predict that the run-in will be totally unpredictable – you can bet on it.

The Women’s Football Academy at Worthing College is now in its fifth year and continues to go from strength to strength. Run in conjunction with Brighton & Hove Albion Women’s Football Club, it provides opportunities for girls aged 16–19 years to play at the highest level of U19 Women’s Football in the BCS Elite League, against teams like Arsenal, Chelsea and Bristol Academy. Academy students can study for A-Levels, B-TECs or NVQs with a timetable coordinated to ensure no lessons are missed as a result of training or matches. In the past five years, the academy has reached two quarter-finals and one semi-final in the English Schools FA Cup, as well as two quarter-finals in the British Colleges Cup. They have also won the U19’s Sussex

County Cup five years running – making them the strongest women’s football academy on the south coast. Alongside these successes, 18 players have gone on to represent Brighton Women in the first team or reserves, including the current first team captain Charley Boswell. Three players have represented England Colleges and eight academy players currently play for Brighton Women, including three in the first team this season: Lucy Somes, Darcey James and Naomi Robinson. Training is taken by academy manager, Michael Bridges, who holds a UEFA ‘A’ Licence. Michael has always been a big supporter of the link between Worthing College and Brighton Women, he said: “With the first team pushing for promotion into the National League, it’s an exciting time for women to get involved at Brighton, and as a College we are proud to be able to support them.” Any young aspiring female footballers who are interested in the academy should contact the college via email to m.bridges@worthing.ac.uk.

It’s organised by a voluntary committee – we don’t receive any funding from the council or any other organisation. A lot goes on behind the scenes at the festival organisation throughout the year. This year we’ve set up the Brighton Restaurant Association as a sub-group. There are lots of exciting opportunities we're developing for the future such as establishing a major weekly local farmers’ market and extending our International Chef Exchange initiative with more foodie destinations in Europe and further afield.

Nick Mosley, managing director of the Brighton & Hove Food & Drink Festival, is confident this year’s events will be bigger and better than ever. The Festival allows both consumers and commercial buyers to showcase their produce at low prices. It is a fabulous smorgasbord of taste sensations and culinary delights. www.brightonfoodfestival.com

With an all-star cast led by Ethan Hawke, Gary Sinise, Kevin Dillon and Peter Berg, the classic war film won critical acclaim on its original release in 1992 and has a large cult following. Directed by Keith Gordon and based on a novel by William Wharton, the film is set towards the end of World War II and tells the story of an American intelligence unit which finds a German platoon that wishes to surrender. Both groups of men, the Americans and Germans, put aside their differences and spend Christmas together before the surrender plan turns bad and both sides are forced to fight one another. To win your copy of the compelling war drama just tell us: Q What year was the film first released?

CÉU - CARAVANA SEREIA BLOOM

To celebrate the recent release of Céu’s critically acclaimed new album and UK tour that comes to Komedia Brighton 24 April, we have four copies of Céu’s latest CD Caravana Sereia Bloom to give away, thanks to Ilka Media. The Brazilian singer song-writer captivates audiences with her mesmerising and unique blend of bossa nova rhythms, electronica, soul-infused samba, jazz, reggae and dub. The open road, the bohemian atmosphere, the existential mythology of travel were the visions in the young singer’s mind while creating her latest album. Numerous road trips from her São Paulo home to Brazil’s Northeast proved to be the perfect inspiration for her recent release. To be in with a chance of winning a copy of this brilliant pop album simply answer this: Q What country does Céu hail from?

IL BOOM

As it’s the 50th Anniversary of Italian comedy Il Boom, Studio Canal are releasing the film on DVD for the first time ever in the UK, and we have five copies up for grabs. Out this month, the film is by

groundbreaking director Vittorio de Sica (Bicycle Thieves, Umberto D). With Alberto Sordi as Giovanni and Gianna Maria Canale as his wife, the film tells the story of a man who lives far beyond his means to provide for his wife’s bodily needs. Nearly insolvent and terribly worried at the idea of losing his partner, Giovanni thinks of committing suicide when an ad gives him hope again. A rich man offers anyone able to give him one of his eyes a large amount of money. To win a copy of this funny tale just tell us: Q Who directed Il Boom?

!

Katie Price’s unmissable p car clogging ink up the Old Steine.

Brighton comedian Seann Walsh is set to make a pilot for a series showcasing Twitter-based clips, sketches and stand-up for TV channel Comedy Central. The new show, called Trending Seann Walsh, could see our very own funnyman go global when trawling the Twitterspherre for all things weird and wonderful. Seann has already taken to our TV screens as the star of channel 4’s Stand Up Of The Week, BBC1s Live At The Apollo and Dave’s Argumental but this would mark his first solo show. We can’ wait to catch a glimpse.

I’VE GOT THE KEY Local author Simon Toyne released the latest book in his thrilling ‘Sanctus’ trilogy last week. The Key follows up from the debut book of the series – Sanctus – and follows the trials and tribulations of American journalist, Liv Adamsen, who has lost her memory. Promising to be as gripping as the fist best-selling title in the series it can surely only be a matter of time before we see TV adaptations or a Hollywood film! We’re already hooked in the office – so make sure you get your hands on a copy as soon as!

LIFE ON MURS B

eautiful Brighton and yummy Olly Murs will be taking to TV screens soon as Olly’s new TV show, Life On Murs comes to ITV2. The series sees Olly taking fans suggestions for what to do when he visits various cities around the country. When he stopped by in Brighton for his tour we caught him filming with his X Factor mate Dermot O’Leary by the seaside and in Brighton’s Fishy Fishy restaurant; turns out this is all part of the ITV2 show! Keep an eye out for the new series later this month.

ROCK MEETS ARCHITECTURE

Hardcore rock fans got a chance to meet their heroes, The Architects, last week when they signed tickets and CDs at HMV Churchill Square. The group then took to Concorde 2 in Madeira Drive to tear up the stage!

RIZZLE KICKS’ TRAVEL PLANS So they might be racing up the charts but it seems Rizzle Kicks won’t be burning rubber on our roads anytime soon. The pair have been offered additional help from a local after both failing their tests last week. Brighton born Jordan Stephens and Harley Alexander have had the luxury of being offered free cars which we hardly feel is far when their debut album Stereo Typical has been flying off the shelves. The cheeky Brightonians have just released their new single ‘Traveller’s Chant’ on Sunday – but at the moment it doesn’t look like they’ll be travelling very far... HEALTH& BEAUTY 23

In your eyes Latest 7 looks at the importance of caring for our vision & the changes over a lifetime

E

ye-care is an important factor in all of our lives. We can take our sight for granted but can you imagine not being able to see everyday things normally? Impaired vision can impact greatly on our lifestyle. Regular eye checkups from a young age are key, as the optician can find and correct changes to our vision and spot early signs of eye diseases before they worsen.

Common eye diseases Cataract: the leading cause of blindness in the world. It can affect children but it is most common with adults. It can be cured with early detection. Glaucoma: Damage to the optic nerve can lead to blindness. A glaucoma check as part of a routine eye test is key here (the eye pressure is measured using a jet of air). Eye drops, every day for life, are used to treat a glaucoma that has developed. Surgery is an option, if the glaucoma is spotted before it worsens. Other health conditions: The optician can spot other illnesses in its early stages through your routine eye test, diabetes being one. Regular visits to the optician are vital in maintaining healthy eyes and sight.

Eye care for kids The eyes continue to develop throughout childhood. Healthy eyes and vision are a critical part of kids’ development. Regular eye tests are important as children assume that the way they see is normal as they have not known any different. Eye check-ups are recommended for children at six months, three and six years, then every two years until the age of 18. In most cases, the NHS pays for this. Newborns should be checked for general eye health by a paediatrician or family physician in the hospital nursery. Early detection of vision problems is crucial because the younger a child is treated, the better the chance of responding to treatment. Vision usually stabilises during the teen years, with eye and vision development complete.

“The average 60year-old needs at least three times as much light as the average 20year-old” Eye care for adults As we get older, our vision changes. We may have trouble focusing on near objects, like reading the newspaper. Adults should have an eye test every two to three years until the age of 40; every two years until the age of 60 and then annually. From the age of 40, there is the risk of dry eye increases for women after menopause. The ability to see in low light decreases – the average 60-yearold needs at least three times as much light as the average 20-year-old. As we get older, our colour vision declines, and visual fields begin to narrow. Your optician can provide you with eye wear to increase contrast vision. A number of agerelated health problems can cause damage; an eye test can help identify a number of conditions at an early stage, making it an important and regular part of checking your health. www.sightsavers.org Words: Tehona Waugh

ANDREW KAY’S FOOD & DRINK

Food & Drink Andrew Kay catches up on the tasty food at Square restaurant and lounge bar in Hove

Scrumptious Square I

t had been some time since I sat down for dinner and a good gossip with my friend Mr C, so we had a lot to catch up on. Square in Hove provided an ideal meeting place as he lives close by and I happened to be at that end of town for meetings. Inside and out, there is no denying that Square is smart. The décor is first class throughout. I do think, that as it is currently configured, you might mistake it for a bar rather than a restaurant which would be a pity, because our food was certainly good. It did take us a while to order as we were in full catch-up mode, spurred on by a G&T for me and a rum and Coke for Mr C. But after a little prompting, we made our choices and relaxed. So to start, after much debate, I had the scallops which came with crisp bacon and a green vegetable puree, which made a nice change from the usual cauliflower. They were good too, perfectly cooked, piping hot and plentiful. Mr C chose calamari and was not to be swayed. “I’m having calamari because I always have calamari.” Fair enough, I thought and he seemed equally pleased with his starter as I was with mine. And to drink, a rather nice bottle of Verdicchio, always a good choice and so much less predictable than Pinot Grigio. On to the mains then. I chose prawns with spinach and salad and I loved it. It was substantial but not heavy. The prawns were there in profusion, well cooked and well seasoned too. The salad was good, full of tasty ingredients and very fresh, and the spinach was superb – I throughly enjoyed it. Mr C had a brief conversation with the owner and she steered him towards the homemade pumpkin ravioli. They arrived looking rather splendid and he thoroughly enjoyed them. I certainly envied the crisp courgette ribbons on top and the sliced scallops, that made a very extravagant garnish. So on to dessert. With Mr R not in attendance I was able to have a sticky toffee pudding. It was good and not too dauntingly large, a good thing after my feast of scallops and prawns. Mr C had an individual banoffee pie that disappeared with almost alarming speed, so it must have been good. I finished with a piping hot double espresso which always pleases me, as so many places send out cold espressos in cold cups. Square is a bit of a dark horse. It looks smart but it also has the look of a bar, a smart bar where you might spend a few hours drinking wine and cocktails and beers and finally get round to eating. But the food is far better than an easy option at the end of a long night of drinking when you cannot be

bothered to move on. Really you should go there and try the food which is well cooked and sensibly priced and than stay on for a few drinks. Perhaps the owners will re-configure Square so that passers-by can see the good food that they make rather than dismissing it as a drinking spot. There are plenty of things to choose from, we went a la carte but look out for specials and some very well priced pizzas and pasta dishes. Square, 79–80 Western Road, Hove, BN3 2JQ 01273 772777, www.square-uk.com

TALENT TROUP

DIVERSITY, Brighton Centre, 1 April JJJJJ

N

ever have I witnessed dancing so innovating, moving, inspiring and powerful. Diversity is a dance group that has quite simply transformed British dancing and and set in motion a new legacy that many other dancers will be looking towards to help inspire their own unique styles. The setting for the performance was The Brighton Centre, which was as grand as the dancing itself with a glittering array of lighting and sound effects that added so much depth to the entire afternoon’s performance. Diversity recreated many of their famous dance routines from their 2009 Britain’s Got Talent rise to fame but added so many new enthralling routines that truly mesmerised the audience. The group choreographer, Alex Banjo, has built up a unity and togetherness through a wide range of ages and this was evident throughout the show, so in tune where each and every member that the performance was faultless in every manner. The technical skill that Diversity produced simply compelled the audience which in turn harvested many long-lasting standing ovations. If dance be the music of life then surely Diversity would be the harmony that holds it all together, for they are a dance group that can only grow stronger, and equally they will only keep adding many more new innovating dance routines that will marvel and amaze all those who will witness their dancing expertise. STARS OF STRICTLY COME DANCING

Shamelessly piggy-backing on the success of the BBC TV show, there are several of this type of show doing the circuit. This one featured the talents of Katya Virshilas and Pasha Kovalev who performed a variety of dancing styles (Rumba, Waltz, Jive, Argentine Tango). In a nice twist they also delivered an en mass Cha Cha Cha workshop and a Q&A which nicely mixed up the tempo of the evening. The highlight was the impassioned and highly charged Paso Doble, performed with the other members of the dance troupe. The evening exemplified their dancing talents and depth of energy. Good fun! THE FUTUREHEADS

The Sunderland lads went back to basics as they began their acapella/acoustic tour in the seated cabaret room. This was the ideal setting for revamped originals and mischievous R’n’B covers delivered in four-part harmonies. ‘Decent Days And Nights’ became a skiffle shouter with Jaff on cello while ‘Struck Dumb’ was a street corner doo-wop symphony. Traditional songs ‘Sumer Is Icumen In’ and ‘The Old Dun Cow’ were executed perfectly with the latter reminiscent of Tom Lehrer. Excellent country-folkster supports The Cornshed Sisters joined to create a celestial choir and the obligatory ‘Hounds Of Love’ completed a great show. Komedia, 2 April JJJJJ Steve Clements

This show began wrong-footed by the impolite exit of an uppity table of drinkers, before compere Sajeela Kershi had even introduced the first act. More fool them. Fortunately, amiable Jem Brookes brought the room together with his gently paced one-liners, and Kershi built the pace with her increasingly filthy links. Sameena Zehra outdid the antics of the attendant stags with her frank sex gags, while Lewis Bryan’s diversion into surreal whale tales was tonight’s most delightful routine. L7 Previews STAGE: PLAYING THE GAME Raunchy fun at the Brighton Little Theatre from Alan Ayckbourn’s modern classic GamePlan

I

n their own words, the Brighton Little Theatre is a ‘very active group’, putting on at least 10 performances a year. Founded in 1940, the latest offering from this stalwart local theatre group comes in the form of Alan Ayckbourn’s GamePlan, a darkly comic look at

modern day living. Directed by Felicity Clements, GamePlan is the story of 16-yearold Sorrel Saxon(Rosa Caines), as she lives with Lynette(Carrie Lambe), her recently separated mother and struggles to cope with the possibility of leaving her comfortable life in a plush

Docklands apartment. Unable to accept giving up on the home she loves, and her mother’s poorly paid new job, Sorrel realises the only way she can maintain her life is to take matters into her own hands. Thinking out of the box, she enlists schoolfriend Kelly (Liz Barton) to help her embark on a rather shady business venture that can only end badly. Following the example of her entrepreneur father, Sorrel utilises the internet to put her plan into action, but things don’t quite go as smoothly as she’d hoped. Her jinks land both her and her mother in a spot of bother, and a very tight corner to manoeuvre out of. Maybe not one to take the kids to see, GamePlan promises to be a scintillating adventure into the depths of 21st century despair. GamePlan, Brighton Little Theatre, 01273 777748, Tuesday 10–Saturday 14 April, 7.45pm, £8, To book: www.wegottickets.com

GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS Burgess Hill Theatre Club presents this production of Glengarry Glen Ross by David Mamet. Revolving around four American businessmen as they compete to keep their jobs, and the bizarre prize of a Cadillac, the play highlights the struggles of individuals to survive the storm of capitalism around them. Descending into ever more suspect tactics to emerge triumphant, the men will seemingly go to any lengths. Direction is taken care of by John O’Connor, who has worked with the Burgess Hill Theatre Club previously on several projects. With darkly comic overtones, this is a play that at once reflects the harsh realities of corporate America while making the audience laugh at its absurdities. MUSIC: MARTIN STEPHENSON AND THE DAINTEES Building bridges between love and hate

M

artin Stephenson and the Daintees are a British rock/folk/pop band combining elements of rockabilly, show tunes, rootsy pop, straight-ahead rock and punk. The band is fronted by songwriter/guitarist Martin Stephenson, signing with Kitchenware Records and releasing their first single in 1982. Their best-selling and most acclaimed album Boat To Bolivia was released in 1986 and was produced by a young Gil Norton, who shortly after went on to produce The Pixies. This tour will see the band play that album in its entirety along with a selection of songs form their back catalogue, including tracks from Gladsome, Humour & Blue from 1988, Salutation Road from 1990 and The Boy’s Heart from 1992. “Simon Moran, who works for SJM national promotions company, at the end of last year he walked into one of my gigs and I hadn’t seen him for 20 years and he wanted to promote a tour with The Daintees.” Although the Daintees split in 1992, they reformed in 2000 and have been playing the odd gig ever since, while Martin Stephenson has forged a career as a solo artist, releasing numerous albums and developing a love for folk roots music. For the most part a self-contained and independent musician with his own label, Stephenson has made a series of mail-order only acoustic projects. “It’s been a strange trip – I’ve converted my ambition to a more spiritual range.” he says from his base in the Highlands off Scotland where he has been for 17 years. Upon Boat To Bolivia’s release the NME said it, ‘builds bridges between love and hate, between cradle and grave, between folk and pop, between the past and present’. Stephenson added, “I didn’t have a clue what I was doing – I kinda got a job as the songwriter, and they said ‘you gotta do it’, so I started writing about my family, and things that were happening to us at the time.” But he wasn’t cut out for the pressures and demands of the mainstream industry: “You might think this is nuts, but we would have all these meetings, we would have stuff in NME, the single was creeping up the charts, and at these meetings there would be panic if the single started going down... we weren’t really into promoting ourselves but what we were into was playing live.” St George’s Church, Saturday 14 April, 7pm, £19.50 follow me on twitter

fter national television fame and a Radio 4 adaptation of her onewoman stand up show Pearl and Dave, Isy Suttie will hold an intimate performance at the Caroline of Brunswick pub in Brighton. Best known for playing Dobby in Channel 4’s Peep Show, Suttie last year showcased her talent as a writer at Edinburgh, receiving praise for her writing and performance, as well as appearing as Kiki in BBC2 sitcom Whites and Nurse Pauline in Skins. Nominated for two British Comedy Awards, and with a host of five star reviews, Suttie draws on her own experiences to tell the story of Pearl and Dave as they search for love in cyber space. Compared to Victoria Wood for her upbeat tunes, Isy Suttie’s Pearl and Dave uses storytelling, stand up and music to tell her hit tale of 21st century love. This up-close and personal evening follows sell out shows at Edinburgh, bringing the one-woman musical comedy to a smaller audience. Playing all the characters, Suttie covers themes from hope to heartbreak while looking for true love, all covered in her own quirky musical style. The Pearl and Dave show is part of a tour of smaller venues around the UK, sure to pique the interest of fans looking to rub shoulders with Suttie before she inevitably embarks on a tour of larger venues in the future. With support from Elis James, compere Julie Jepson, plus Adam Race and Stephen Bailey, Suttie will host a packed evening in an intimate venue. e’s the wunderkind of Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Angel fans, as a writer on both TV series, and for the motion comic. You can also add to Drew Goddard’s credits a stint on Alias, Lost and as the writer of clever horror film Cloverfield. Cabin In The Woods marks his directorial debut, and with a script written by him and the glorious Joss Whedon, it has been greatly anticipated and has created a buzz worthy of any honey farm in the district. As Goddard’s and Whedon’s track records would suggest, this takes a well trodden path in scares and then adds a new dimension to the idea. Five teenagers head off to a cabin in the woods for a summer break with a series of instructions they’ve been told to follow and joyful youth in their hearts. It’s when the rules start to be broken that the bright young things discover that this retreat was designed and built more for punishment than any fun endeavours they may have had in mind. Starring Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Fran Kanz (Dollhouse), Anna Hutchison, Kristen Connolly and Jesse Williams, as well as Amy Acker (a Whedon favourite cast member from Angel and Dollhouse), this looks all set to be a fine addition to any Whedon fan’s collection. STARS With Val Aviv

HARIES {Mar 21–Apr 20}

Your hasty ruler Mars has finally stopped its long time retrograde motion in the rather painstakingly hard working sign of Virgo. Yes, you’re still learning your craft, but the good news is that you’ll begin to realise the progress you’ve made is nothing short of epic.

HTAURUS {Apr 21–May 21}

Resisting divine opportunity for enjoyment is in some respects the greatest of sins; as long as you are not hurting anybody then you must strive to fulfill your hearts longing. Let yourself go, so that everyone can enjoy your company to the fullest.

HGEMINI {May 22–June 21}

You’re inspired and creative with lashings of imagination right now. Though you may be holding true to some lofty ideals, there’s no harm in seeing where your dreams can take you. The compassion you feel towards others is the very quality that draws their loyalty to you.

HCANCER {June 22–July 22}

There’s never any point in fighting over the truth, as the truth is often a subjective little shape-shifting beast that can be right in both its polarities. Such is the paradox; it makes one wonder why our ego is so attached to any one side.

HLEO {July 23–Aug 22}

It can be a hard nut life, but more than likely it’s just a hard nut lesson. Once you crack it, it doesn’t seem so tough. The hardest nut in the Zodiac, namely Saturn, is laying down his hard-hitting tack-ticks, this means it’s time to step up and take responsibility.

HVIRGO {Aug 23–Sep 22}

At last the energy is back in full swing and your curious ruler Mercury enjoys a rather creative patch, swooning over your loved one and waxing romantic lyrics to better soften the love punch. It’s top marks for you and an enjoyable time for your partner.

HLIBRA {Sep 23–Oct 22}

If partners are harder to please, perhaps it’s due to boundaries and you both need to know where they are, so don’t cross them and make each other cross. Sometimes the hardest thing to do is be accepting and mature about another’s shortcomings.

HSCORPIO {Oct 23–Nov 21}

Relationships are given a chance to intensify so that you may understand the deeper implications of them and their profound impact on you. Notice too that during this phase finances are enriched through combined resources.

HSAGITTARIUS {Nov 22–Dec 20}

Don’t let other people bring you down. Old friends or mature friends give you the freedom to be yourself without being anything less than understanding and tolerant. Romance can bloom once again as a special person unlocks your heart.

HCAPRICORN {Dec 21–Jan 19}

Explore the great mystery through study, travel or religion and be inspired while the intrepid planet of Mars begins his forward motion, just don’t get too preachy as it’s tiresome. Being in public has its limitations, but your sense of fun is exacerbated behind closed doors.

HAQUARIUS {Jan 20–Feb 19}

It may feel as through the world is getting smaller, but this sense of claustrophobia could actually mean you have just started to realise the limitations of some of your current thought patterns. So upgrade them and step into a bigger world.

HPISCES {Feb 20–Mar 20}

Are you ready to face up to the opposition that’s confronting you? Is it really so big? What seems big today could easily be forgotten tomorrow, so if you must fight, think first about why you are fighting – ego battles are meaningless with hindsight. wednesday 11 The Apprentice BBC1, 9pm So, who’s going to impress Lord Sugar by falling asleep mid cab meeting this time eh? That was funny. Seems that you need to do more than not snore not to get caught napping on this job. Anyway, this week the teams are setting up second-hand shops in London’s fashionable East End. Shabby chic or just shabby?

Divine Women BBC2, 9pm Is it really so very different for girls? It would seem so according to recent historical programmes and newspaper articles. Hmm. This latest rallying cry for recognising empowered ladies sees historian Bettany Hughes tracing the often hidden and controversial place of women in religion across the world.

FILM: Went The Day Well? Film4, 4.15pm Don’t you just love plucky Thora Hird? Yes, this is certainly from the days before she’d ever considered the benefits of a stairlift and it’s advertising help in later life. A part of the supporting cast, Thora and pals are a rallying group of English folk mid WWII who tumble to a stealth German invasion. What ho!

monday 16 Inside Nature’s Giants: Kangaroo Channel 4, 8pm The BAFTA award-winning team travel to Australia to dissect another beast. What will it be this time... a kangaroo, of course. These bizarre, bounding giants can measure up to two metres tall and millions of them roam the Outback with thousands killed in traffic accidents each year.

The 70s BBC2, 9pm Historian Dominic Sandbrook takes a nostalgic look at the ‘70s, the decade that shaped our society from the remnants of post-war Britain. It was a time of excitement as many experienced the thrill of getting on the property ladder and having their own money, while conflicts over Europe and the economy loomed.

Our Crime BBC3, 9pm This documentary shows the effects of technology on society through the lens of youth crime. There’s no forced connection made, but it does look at how young people are oblivious to the ubiquitous nature of cameras capturing our every move. So much so that they record their own misdeeds themselves.
