“Brighton Fringe is the third largest open-access multi-art form festival in the world, and what makes it exceptional is that it is set in a city with a unique heritage that has set the pace, diversity, creativity and innovative thinking in the city and beyond.”

Brighton Fringe 2012 will take part 5–27 May. The new managing director, Julian Caddy and a new team were introduced at the launch event at Komedia. City College Brighton & Hove, which provides over 700 vocational courses across the city, held its City Achievers 2011 awards ceremony on 3 November.

The awards, presented by principal Phil Frier and John Barradell (chief executive, Brighton & Hove City Council) and Peter Field (Lord Lieutenant for East Sussex) were given to the top achievers, as nominated by their tutors for a variety of reasons: great to teach, helping others in class or overcoming huge personal barriers.

Other awards were for Staff and Community including Uden Sales & Lettings, Outstanding Employer Contribution and Gresham Blake, Golden Alumni Inductee.

Brighton played host to the first and largest event of its kind in Europe: the WhaleFest. The weekend event launched on 4 November with a VIP evening at the Hilton Metropole and opened to the public 5–6 November at The Hove Centre. The festival was organised by Planet Whale with a programme of events including: eye to eye with a life-sized Blue Whale; step inside a whale’s stomach; a ‘virtual’ dolphin watching trip, and talks by the world’s whale and dolphin experts and wildlife celebrities. WhaleFest is Planet Whale’s way to provide whale and dolphin conservation organisations and sustainable whale watching businesses with a free platform to promote their work to the widest possible audience.

The first Little Bay restaurant in the UK outside of London has opened next to Umi Hotel on Brighton seafront.

Fashioned on a theatrical theme, there are private boxes on upper levels for diners.

Run by Peter Ilic, the restaurant offers fine European bistro fare at budget prices. He opened his first Little Bay restaurant in Kilburn, London in 1992 and since then has opened three others across London and one in Belgrade.

All quiet on Madeira Drive The RAC Future Car Challenge took place on Saturday 5 November 2011, the day before The Royal Automobile Club’s world famous London to Brighton Veteran Car Run. Starting on Madeira Drive Brighton, this unique live event used the traditional 60-mile Veteran Run route in reverse for the challenge: to drive from Brighton to London using the least energy possible within the 2hrs 45min minimum and 3hrs 30min maximum time permitted.

Councillor Anne Meadows,Mayor of Brighton & Hove, and Michael Bedingfield, RAC marketing director and Brighton resident, flagged off each car.

Damon Hill, Kevin McCloud, Mark Goodier, Quentin Wilson together with Gordon Murray, former F1 designer, were among the celebrities who took part. The Royal Automobile Club selected Help for Heroes as the beneficiary of the Future Car Challenge.

7 days of headlines with phil mills Carnage on the streets of Sussex, Mel C spotted on Brighton seafront and new jobs plan for 2014

iolence dominated the news with literally hundreds of people being injured across the county.

Twelve people were arrested after a fight at a Bognor holiday park. Six people were taken to hospital, four of them staff, after a group was ejected from a nightclub on the site.

Almost 200 people were injured on bonfire night, the majority in Lewes where the country's biggest ‘celebration’ saw one woman almost blinded. More than 60,000 people attended, the biggest crowd in years.

Two drivers were seriously injured in a three-vehicle pile up on the B2110 at Balcombe. One man suffered a broken leg and ribs, and facial injuries.

A woman suffered back injuries.

Another three-vehicle crash, this time at Hellingly, saw two more people hurt.

In Brighton, a 64-year-old local man was attacked at Dukes Mound and a group of teenagers are helping police.

Meanwhile, the parents of Mo Bourner, a 15 year old critically injured in an attack in Bexhill, remain at his hospital bedside at Hurstwood Park Neurological Centre.

And detectives investigating disorder at the Brighton and Hove Albion Vs Crystal Palace match have issued four photos of men wanted in connection with offences. These Brighton ‘fans’ were pictured in Queens Road before the match which saw 19 arrests.

oung people who take part in the Queens Park and Craven Vale Youth Cookery and Media Project at the Haven Community Centre in my ward have published their own cookery booklet. Recipes inside include mushroom risotto, lasagne, cheese straws and toffee apples.

The participants, aged between 10 and 15, come from the local area. They cooked and produced more than 20 different recipes, and learned a range of skills

And Middle Street Primary kids joined storyteller Jamie Crawford at Brighton’s Jubilee Library to launch the programme for the London 2012 Festival which will bring together leading artists from across the world from 21 June to 9 September. Jubilee Library will be involved in the summer 2012 reading challenge to encourage children to read for pleasure. While they were celebrating, thousands of people – most of them probably due to the warm weather – turned out to see 500 old crocks taking part in the London to Brighton veteran car rally.

And more than 3,000 residents in the Brunswick and Adelaide area of Brighton and Hove are to be asked for their views on a possible trial communal recycling scheme. At present these streets receive a weekly recycling service, but only a

small percentage of people use it.

Residents will be asked what they think about the possibility of replacing this collection service with on-street communal bins. Closing date for the consultation is 9 December and for more information go to: www.brightonhove.gov.uk/recyclingtrial Meanwhile, Brighton and Hove is hoping to create at least 6,000 new jobs by 2014 in a plan agreed at the council's Planning, Employment, Economy and Regeneration cabinet. It follows research into how the city is growing, the likely employment opportunities to result from this growth and the skills and training opportunities residents will need to fill these jobs. Major agencies and businesses in the city including representatives from the council,

The cookery project is one of several youth projects run at the Haven in Pankhurst Avenue, Brighton. She said that she was saddened to learn that years later similar problems were still being reported.

“In addition, I am concerned at the way in which eating and drinking is now divorced from nursing – it is all part of patient care and should be an integral part of people’s rehabilitation.

“How can things improve? It is a big question – with no quick fix answer.

But the medical profession must do all it can to help people when they are at their most vulnerable – if family members can be involved that is all to the good, but if people are on their own, they have the right to receive good care when they need it most.”

Joyce Jones has since made a reasonable recovery.

Duncan Selbie – Hospital Trust Chief Executive Duncan Selbie, the hospital trust chief executive, took over four years ago – two years after the Margaret Haywood whistleblowing episode. He apologised in person after receiving Liz Owen’s complaint about her mother’s time in A&E, the Short Stay Ward and Jowers Ward.

He said today: “I completely agree with Mrs Owen that the lack of compassion shown by some of our staff towards her mother while she was in our care is distressing. The feelings of sadness, anger and disbelief at the lack of kindness and compassion sometimes shown by those working in the caring professions is felt as much, if not more, by the majority of NHS staff who do share and uphold these values.

“Our Accident and Emergency Department and the adjoining Short Stay Ward can be exceptionally busy. “We strive every day I am certain it must sometimes feel to do better than this impersonal and chaotic for patients and their families and it is our job and I believe that on not only to alleviate pain and treat a patient’s illness or injury but also to most days for most do all we can to minimise their fear and anxiety and make them feel safe patients we do” and looked after.

“It is my personal responsibility and the responsibility of every person who manages others to lead by example and actively demonstrate this every day. We have to think in terms of what I can do, always do our best and demand the same from everyone we work with. When we received Mrs Owen’s complaint in January I personally apologised to her for our failings in the care her mother received and since then her story has been shared with all the staff involved.

“We strive every day to do better than this and I believe that on most days for most patients we do.” In his weekly letter to staff last week Mr Selbie said that the story as told by Mrs Owen “paints an embarrassing and distressing picture of the standard of ‘care’ she received”.

BREAST CANCER SCREENING A new report on breast cancer screening in Brighton and Hove gives the service a clean bill of health. Waiting times rose significantly before and at about the time that the service moved to the Park Centre, opposite Preston Park, three years ago. The service was previously based in the grounds of the Royal Sussex County Hospital.

The drop in performance was blamed on the move, on staff shortages and a switch to using digital technology. Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust, which runs the service, has worked hard to address the problems. One staff member said that digital technology meant more accurate results although she emphasised that no screening programme could ever be expected to be 100 per cent accurate.

He said that the latest letter said: “I am writing on behalf of my sister and all the family to thank those who took care of our mother during her final illness. Mum became ill in the middle of August and was admitted into the Medical Assessment Unit and then on to Jowers Ward where she remained for seven weeks until her death.

“We thank Dr Adam Harper and the medical team who achieved exactly the right balance between delivering the correct clinical treatment while remaining humane and approachable to our mother and my sister and me.

“Matron Gibbins’ nursing staff and care assistants provided a level of care that I can only describe as wonderful. Mum was always spotlessly clean, treated with respect and dignity, encouraged to take medicines and eat and drink. and all their duties were performed with incomparable kindness and compassion.

“We read a great deal in the press about inadequate care for the elderly and this must drain the morale of those of you who work tirelessly to provide a high level of care.” n

The Martlet’s Hospice has teamed up with Brighton and Hove Buses to encourage more people to make a will. The campaign, which starts this month, will see a growing number of buses carrying witty and thought-provoking messages urging people to remember the hospice when they do make a will.

The Martlet’s relies on legacies for about a quarter of its income as just 29 per cent of the hospice’s funding comes form the NHS. A spokesman said that in the past two years legacy income has fallen significantly. The campaign is aimed at reversing the decline.

Former Brighton and Hove Albion chairman Dick Knight has helped with the campaign. He said: “I have recently become a hospice trustee and have been delighted to employ my marketing and advertising background to improve the fortunes of this excellent local charity. I appeal to everyone to look out for the campaign buses and to take action to help The Martlet’s.”

Roger French, chairman of The Martlet’s and managing director of the bus company, said: “It is our pleasure to be able to offer our buses as a unique campaign platform to the hospice for its new wills campaign. We hope the campaign brings real results as it is essential the hospice builds its income.”

The Martlet’s chief executive Caroline Lower said: “The campaign encourages people to talk to their local solicitor or to email the hospice at legacies@themartlets.org.uk for more information.”

n OSKA BRIGHT FILM FESTIVAL TO CELEBRATE ITS FIFTH BIRTHDAY The Oska Bright Film Festival takes place in Brighton next week. It is the world’s first film festival run by, and for, people with a learning disability. It takes place every other year and this year celebrates its 5th birthday.

From Tuesday (22 November) to Thursday there will be workshops, master classes and screenings at the Corn Exchange. On Thursday (24 November) there will be an awards ceremony, with Latest 7’s Andrew Kay among those heading out the Oskas.

The festival is supported by the Brighton charity Carousel, which aims to help people with a learning disability to reach their potential in the arts. Screen South and the Arts Council South East are among the festival’s other supporters. www.oskabright.co.uk.

Yes! I am very proud to be a part of this club and excited to see what they can accomplish over the next few seasons.

What is your training regime out of season/in season?

I am currently training for the Brighton Marathon in April 2012 so I have been going to the gym and running in addition to football training and games.

There’s been a heated debate about supporters getting up to leave well before the final whistle. It’s a shame to see the stadium emptying when there is still 10 minutes to go, however, it is understandable, if a tad frustrating. The reasons for this are clear and might have to be addressed before the club go for the expansion of The Amex to 30,000 seats, mooted for next season.

The difficulty of getting away from the stadium was always going to take a season or so to settle down. The problem against Barnsley was the game was on a ‘school night’ and the trains were not only a Sunday service, but up the spout as well. For those that have the luxury of time, it is a pleasure to stick around and have a beer and let the crowds dissipate, but it can hardly improve the atmosphere for the players and Gus Poyet must be frustrated with the situation. There may come a time when the crowd could make the difference when the team are chasing a goal in injury time, which isn’t helped by having a half empty stadium. We waited a long time to get this lovely new stadium, it seems a shame to want to get away from it with undue haste before the game has finished.

Mark Brailsford anticipates a grudge match

So now we approach the third away game against the Saints in the Poyet era and the game has all the makings of a classic grudge match. Revenge is in the air and the memory of the second away game of Poyet’s tenure will also have some bearing on how both teams approach the game. That last visit to St Mary’s somehow ended 0-0 after Southampton absolutely battered the Albion defence. Although if the Seagulls’ Chris Wood had converted that penalty it could have been a hard won victory.

As Southampton look down from their perch atop the Championship table and deservedly so, Nigel Adkins, our manager Dean Wilkins and former players Dean Hammond and Dan Harding, will be smacking their lips in anticipation. But as Gus will recall from that magical first game in charge, nothing in this game can be taken for granted. I fancy a point from this one, worth a bob or two.

One by one, we work through the list of negative beliefs I hold about myself and turn them on their heads, creating positive affirmations that I will live by for the next seven days. “I worry too much about what others think of me” becomes “I’m worth getting to know”, and so on.

Over the next week, I am to weave my affirmations into my daily routine. Some people, Adam tells me, write them on post-its and stick them to their mirrors.

Others hide theirs in cereal boxes, so they can recite them over breakfast (“What?” I ask. “Like snap, crackle, and ‘I’m FABULOUS’?”). The idea is, by regularly repeating positive statements, we can reprogram our brains into believing them.

top me if this sounds crazy, but there’s a little voice in my head and he’s telling me what to do.

He’s not my conscience, before you ask. He’s not my moral compass, and no, he’s definitely not the devil. His name is Adam, he lives in my phone, and he is incessantly, insistently perky.

“Tell me,” says Adam, in measured tones, “three things you really value and appreciate about yourself.”

I stare at the phone. The speaker button is illuminated, and Adam’s disembodied voice has been floating around the room for the last 25 minutes, showering me with positive thoughts. It’s a strange feeling, sort of like I’ve been granted an audience with God. Or Shirley Temple.

“The other day,” I say, after a considerable pause, “I found a vein on my bicep.”

This is not what Adam, who has been a life coach for six years, is looking for. His role as a coach is “to challenge people and hold them to account so they can change their life for the better.” This makes him two-parts therapist to one-part drill sergeant, with a liberal dash of motivational speaker and a frosted rim of genuinely nice bloke.

For the first half hour of our consultation, Adam gently teases out the things I like about my life, as well as some of the things I’d like to change. On the

Akura’s work for one of my favourite novels, the brilliant White Teeth by Zadie Smith, is probably the most badass of the designs, showing a growling black and red tiger. Nice work!

LOVE LETTERS The Correspondents are Mr Bruce and Mr Chuckles, collaborators in resuscitating a sound from bygone times and mixing it up to make some very contemporary tracks. Jeff Hemmings gets to the bottom line of their bass line

T

he unlikely duo of Mr Bruce and Mr Chuckles have been enticing all those who witness them to ‘get your brogues on’ – their revamped vintage sounds riding the wave of the fun and fantasy filled electro swing scene, while their records are being released on the local label, Freshly Squeezed. Jeff Hemmings put some questions to the pair ahead of their Concorde 2 gig this week.

Can I clarify – Chucks does the music, programming, etc, and Mr Bruce provides the vocals?

Chucks: We try to, at least!

How did you to get together musically and what are your formative loves, music-wise?

Chucks: We did a bit of bedroom DJ/MC jamming back in our teens. Those were the days. But it wasn’t really until after uni that we both came back to London and started making a few tracks, informally playing at a few mates parties. It all went from there – there wasn’t really any ‘lets make a band!’ moment.

Mr Bruce: Well I grew up on a healthy diet of drum ’n’ bass and my music taste broadened while working as a host at a club night up in Edinburgh that played a little bit of everything. Chucks used to send tracks up north and when I returned to London we played about until we had a small selection of tracks to play live.

Where did the name The Correspondents come from?

Mr B: Originally it was because I used to wear twotone brogues that are known as Correspondents but now I see it representing the way Chucks and I work. We are constantly passing tracks back and forth... corresponding... tenuous!

What do you make of the electro swing scene?

Chucks: It’s slightly distant to what we do now to be honest. We’re probably more just electro/hiphop/jazz/alt/pop at the moment [laughs]. We’ve still got a lot of love for it as it was coming up at the same time as we were, and our sets were definitely much more swing orientated then. The problem for us now is that we’ve just heard the electro swing repertoire of tracks too many times before and after gigs, so we’ve been slightly over exposed. There definitely needs to be more people doing it, and doing it differently.

“Sources have been everything from charity shops to iTunes to DVDs” Mr Bruce, how and where did you get your fashion sense for The Correspondents. Is your clothes and make-up bill high?

Mr B: Originally it was the dapper gents of bygone eras like Fred Astaire, but dancing in suits can be restrictive so I then turned to spandex and I guess Bowie is an influence, and the black and white aesthetic of Klaus Nomi. Carley Hague and Isobel Webster design and make the full outfits and they are very talented and price wise very reasonable!

You seem to have hit the spot on the live stage – the implicit hedonism within the music, the dressing up etc resonates perfectly with the festival vibe. Any particular highlights?

Mr B: Well Glastonbury, Secret Garden Party and Bestival are always big gigs with big crowds for us and we stay for the weekend rather than doing an in/out job. To be honest I never went to a festival before I started performing at them!

When you first performed did people get it?

Chucks: Hopefully not! [laughs] But then the energy comes across, and hopefully that kinda rubs off.

Mr B: Sort of. At the start you do all kinds of gigs that come your way – we still do – and we could be thrashing it out at a cocktail party which can be mildly inappropriate.

Is there a desire to go back in time and sample the delights of the ‘20s/’30s speakeasy scene?

Chucks: Why not, although only if I could come back! The whole revival scene isn't really my kind of escapism.

Still wearing that lycra... Does it feel liberating?

Mr B: It’s better than wearing jeans, not as good as pyjamas.

Mr B: Yeah, we’ve become a band that rather annoyingly calls itself multi-genre.

Mr B: I don’t see the point in reminiscing. You’ve got to make it relevant to today otherwise you are just imitating.

Where do you source samples?

Chucks: I try to stay away from them now to be honest, because they’re such an expensive arse to get the rights too! But sources have been everything from charity shops to iTunes to DVDs. Especially with genres that are more obtuse to get into, the best way was to start with compilations and run away with the artists that stand out to you.

Tell us about your plans for 2012...

Chucks: To release an album! Bigger and better gigs, more facets to the live show, buy my annual new pair of trainers, hunker down for the apocalypse. Probably.

Would it work if you wore jeans and a T-shirt?

Mr B: Without sounding pretentious I need to get dressed up for a gig otherwise I don’t feel like I can be as excited and flamboyant as I want to be! And the amount that I move on stage it makes sense to wear a tight fitting outfit – you wouldn’t see an athlete in jeans and a T-shirt – it isn’t practical.

Mr B: Yes. Boom. Lots to be done.

This season it returns and with it a new food offer entitled Feast. Given the shortness of the season I thought it would be a good idea to travel up to Shoreditch and the Worship Street Whistle Stop where they were able to provide me with a taste of things to come.

The Worship Street Whistle Stop is a fascinating subterranean venue that specialises in wicked concoctions that they distill in their own laboratory. It has a feel of Frankenstein and a touch of Sweeney Todd too – and I loved it.

The chef in charge of the Brighton ice-rink project was on hand and had decided to prepare for us a selection of dishes from “The chef tipped the menu. This however was delicious, a tasty parcel of puff pastry filled with a soft mushroom and potato filling with dressed leaves and confit mushrooms on the side, a hearty and flavour packed dish that put a smile on both our faces.

Fish and chips was equally hearty, good crisp batter encasing pearly white fish, piping hot and very crisp chips and some crushed peas, not the northern mushy variety that I prefer but good and sweet. The tartare sauce included on the side was good too and very smooth.

Next to arrive was a fillet of sea bass on crushed potatoes with some delicious swiss chard on the side. The fillet of fish was excellent, the skin crisp and salty, the fish flaky, cooked just the right amount. The crushed potato was tasty and the stew deliciously vibrant in contrast to the soft potato and creamy fish. There was a foam too, but it was in plentiful supply rather than a dribble, and it tasted good, delicately fishy.

Our fourth dish was lamb, tender sweet slices served with great gratin dauphinoise topped with fat cloves of caramelised garlic. A rich meat reduction came in a small vintage gravy boat, a touch that I loved, being rather particular about where my gravy goes. I also loved the mix of Mediterranean vegetables that was on nodding terms with a ratatouille but

rather more sophisticated from the exclusion of too much tomato sauce. The meat itself was just as I like it, lean slices edged with sweet fat, delicious.

The final course came as a piece of pure theatre, a huge tureen filled with seaweed arrived with deep fried oyster placed back in their shells with some more fishy foam. At the last minute the chef tipped water into the centre releasing the mystic vapour of dry ice. It looked so good and such fun that I can see the ice rink restaurant being awash with swirling mists and people chomping down on crisp oysters.

Dry ice features in some of the promised dishes, one of which is popcorn, three pieces of which will make you breathe a plume of mist nearly two foot long. What parent is going to deny a child the chance for that kind of fun?

I liked what we ate and have to say that when they arrive here in Brighton, bringing with them their tricks and magic, a dry ice boiler and interiors that look like a magicians den, I will be there to find out more. It is a common misconception that having the flu jab will actually give you the flu. We’ve all heard the stories from someone who knows someone: they had the annual flu vaccination and then came down with the flu a few days later, making the flu jab redundant.

This is a myth, as the flu vaccine does not contain a live virus so it cannot cause infection. So where do these stories come from? For one, flu vaccination sessions start in the autumn, which is typically when cold/flu symptoms appear too, so a link may have been made becasue of the time of year.

Secondly, someone may have been exposed to the flu virus shortly before having the flu jab or in the two weeks following, when the Flu symptoms vaccine is yet to take effect.

Who should get the flu vaccination?

The flu vaccine is available free on the NHS to those regarded ‘most at risk’. This group includes: pregnant women, the elderly, people who have a serious medical condition and frontline health and social workers. The flu can affect this group more seriously – if you fall in this group and have not been offered the flu vaccination contact your GP today.

How effective is the flu jab?

The flu vaccination is a great preventative measure, and can be vital for those most at risk, as suffering from a bad bout of flu could lead to pneumonia and hospitalisation.

No vaccine is 100 per cent effective. It can protect against the flu but other illnesses like the common cold can occur. If you do happen to catch the flu and you’ve been vaccinated against it, the symptoms will be milder than if you hadn’t had the jab.

If you had the flu jab last year, you may think you are still immune, but this is not the case. Flu strains change and protection from the vaccine decreases over time. The vaccine also changes: this year’s flu vaccination includes a vaccine to protect against swine flu (H1N1).

ELECTRIC BILL BILL BAILEY – DANDELION MIND, Brighton Centre, 9 November JJJJJ

B

ill Bailey is somewhat of a celebrity. His stand up, panel show and sitcom appearances have earned him a loyal following large enough to justify playing massive venues. Bailey is a unique comedian with a playful physicality and a wonderfully expressive face; these qualities helped to cement his reputation and unfortunately, these qualities were lost in an enormous arena. His straight stand up sometimes felt generic; observations about David Cameron seemed to be tossed in without any real insight (although there were some brilliantly surreal descriptions). Far more effective was his song about Nick Clegg, and his music which remains Bailey’s ace in the hole.

Although he can now seemingly pump out Wurzels and Kraftwerk-style pop parodies in his sleep, the majority of the songs in the show were simply exhilarating in their wit, verve and gobsmacking amount of talent displayed.

It was impossible not to laugh at his Francophile rendition of Gary Numan’s ‘Cars’, complete with a surprise accompaniment which I won’t spoil. A kneesup number about Chas and Dave doing a deal with the Devil could only have come from Bailey; similarly the prog jazz extended computer alert (you had to be there). These moments show what a creative force he is. The absolute highlight of the show was a comparison of different renaissance paintings of St Thomas examining the wounds of the resurrected Christ. This may sound like the driest thing imaginable but the routine hit a real sweet spot between intellectual and silly, expertly augmented with some Python-style animation.

The shadow cast by Jesus’ nipple has never been so funny.

Bailey said the theme of the show was doubt. By this evidence, he should cast off any doubt that leads him to play it safe and embrace the esoteric lunacy which made his name.

DODGY

Dodgy are known for their anthemic summer songs of the ’90s, from ‘Staying Out For The Summer’, to ‘Good Enough’ and ‘Melodies Haunt You’, so it was with some trepidation that the Concorde 2 filled with those enchanted by a certain indie nostalgia for this double set performance. The first set was made up of the reformed band’s new album, out in January, Stand Upright In A Cool Place, and incorporating sounds from Simon & Garfunkel, The Beach Boys and a certain folksy psychedelia reassured all that this was definitely a good idea. Maturing with detail and talent, it was a gorgeous set. The second half was

filled with floor-filling Dodgy classics, including a muchdemanded rendition of ‘Grassman’ and closing with new song, a quieter but enriching ‘Happy Endings’. Soul-nourishing.

STEVE-O: THE ENTIRELY TOO MUCH INFORMATION TOUR

The name of Steve-O’s show is no understatement. The Jackass star, and reformed addict, certainly tried to prove he’s not just about covering himself in excrement and showing off in front of a camera. In an intimate environment with a crowd full of banter, he shared some extremely graphic showbiz stories.

Ending the show with a huge knife balanced on his nose, and setting his hair on fire, Steve-O definitely is the goofy character from his MTV shows. Silly stunts aside, which is what we love him for, the boyish level of humour didn’t quite do it for this woman in her mid twenties.

Congratulations to the BHASVIC dance students, charmingly starting their careers and Purcell’s entertainment with a full theatre and one of the very best Baroque ensembles, the BREMF Players. They were gamely helped by some very stylish and saucy soloists and a happy chorus of BREMF Singers. I loved The Plaint, a tragic duet for solo violin and melancholic (drunk) soprano; I shed a tear, and there was so much to laugh at. The whole production was a treat, as if thrown together but easily held in place by John Hancorn’s elegant conducting. What a joyful climax to a brilliant festival!

An acapella intro, aided by the audience, ushered in an encore of ‘Oh L’Amour’ and ‘Stop!’ to end a masterclass in pop perfection.

L7 Previews STAGE: LOVESONG Frantic Assembly joins with writer Abi Morgan in a new play about lifelong love starring Siân Phillips

A

cclaimed theatre company Frantic Assembly joins forces with celebrated writer Abi Morgan in a new play about lifelong love featuring renowned actress Siân Phillips. Lovesong intertwines a couple in their 20s with the same man and woman a lifetime later. Their past and present selves collide in this haunting and beautiful tale of togetherness. It is an exploration of how a couple’s relationship changes over time, inspired by T.S Eliot’s poem The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock.

Frantic Assembly’s celebrated physical style combines movement, design, music and text. Recent production highlights include Beautiful Burnout (a coproduction with National Theatre Scotland), which played at the Minerva Theatre during the winter 2010 season, Stockholm by Bryony Lavery, a radical reworking of Shakespeare’s Othello, Pool (no water) by Mark Ravenhill, and Dirty Wonderland, a site specific show for Brighton Festival.

Abi Morgan’s recent screen credits include the forthcoming film about Margaret Thatcher, Iron Lady, starring Meryl Streep, and Shame featuring Michael Fassbender and Carey Mulligan, which received rave reviews at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. Other screen credits include the recent BBC 2 drama series The Hour, the film adaptation of Brick Lane and the BAFTA Awardwinning Channel 4 drama Sex Traffic.

Morgan’s stage credits include her previous collaboration with Frantic Assembly on the much praised Tiny Dynamite. Her other writing for the stage includes 27, a new production for the National Theatre Scotland, The Night Is Darkest Before The Dawn, Fugee, Tender and Splendour.

Siân Phillips’ recent stage credits include Juliet And Her Romeo (Bristol Old Vic), Les Liaisons Dangereuses on Broadway and the West End and a touring production of Calendar Girls. Screen credits include her BAFTA Award-winning

role in the acclaimed BBC drama series I, Claudius, as well as Goodbye Mr Chips, Tinker Tailor, Soldier, Spy, and Dune. She has also performed live with musician Rufus Wainwright at the Old Vic. The production also stars Edward Bennett who came to prominence after taking over the lead role from David Tennant in the RSC production of Hamlet in 2009. He also appears in the forthcoming film adaptation of War Horse, directed by Steven Spielberg.

MUSIC: THE PIGEON DETECTIVES Welch and Rawlings reflect on their first album release and tour for eight years

T

he most well known of the recent spate of bluegrass/country-blues revivalists, Gillian Welch along with partner David Rawlings are however not purists; their mostly downbeat, melancholy music is distinct, almost poppy in flavour and this has helped them to cross over to the mainstream while still holding on to their cult status. But things have been quiet on the Welch/Rawlings front since their last record, a long eight years ago... What has she been doing for the past eight years? “Aside from touring and driving ourselves crazy trying to write, we played on some friends’ records; Bright Eyes, The Decemberists, Robyn Hitchcock, Old Crow Medicine Show, and of course we made Dave’s first record, A Friend Of A Friend. This (The Harrow & The Harvest, released earlier this year) isn’t a greatest hits record from the last eight years. All of the inspiration finally came within the last year, after the creative reawakening that led to Dave’s record. I feel like these were the songs we were waiting for."

Dave Rawlings, the highly skilled and imaginative guitarist and co-writer with Gillian over the years is on top form throughout... “Dave has produced our last four records, and is at least half of the writing team and half of the band, so it’s pretty misleading that we’re called ‘Gillian Welch’. We really should have been ‘The Black Strings’ or ‘Brass Keys’ or ‘Bright Stripes’ or ‘White Straps’, but it’s a little late for that now. He might like it this way though, elusive as he is.”

Like countless artists before them they were lured to Nashville to record the album... “We made this record at Woodland Sound Studios, which is a historic studio that we bought in 2001. Nashville is a great place to make a record. I think it’s the musical history that’s all around the town. It’s inspiring. Look at Dylan’s records. Look at Neil Young’s records. Look at O Brother. When you work in Nashville some part of your artist brain has to confront Hank Williams, Bill Monroe, Elvis even.”

And like so many nowadays they strive for a simplicity and warmth that can’t be so easily manipulated: “Nothing has ever sounded as beautiful as acoustic instruments on analog tape. And when you record everything at once, you capture our favourite sound, the sound of the instruments and the voices combining in the air, as opposed to the more common process of combining them electronically or digitally later. We love the sound of acoustic instruments. At this point, we have devoted our lives to that sound.

“I remember when our first album Revival came out, we felt like we were all alone out in the acoustic wilderness. Now I look around, and we are surrounded by comrades – Old Crow, Mumford And Sons, Low Anthem, Fleet Foxes, the list goes on. While it’s surprising to look up and find that Dave and myself are the veterans here, I think we staked out some ground that has proved pretty fertile.”

COMEDY: PATRICK MONAHAN – HUG ME I FEEL GOOD Winner of ITV’s Show Me The Funny, hug-o-holic and best friend to everyone, Patrick Monahan is in Brighton What – besides the tour and DVD – do you feel you got out of the Show Me The Funny programme?

It was an amazing experience even though at times it was a bit hairy and scary – and I had a few sleepless nights and very early starts – like an army base at 6am wake up call after finally dropping off to sleep at 5am!

The most vital thing about the show was getting feedback from the judges and guest judges – the feedback was critical and honest – which is good to have especially doing a job like stand up, where you only ever get two responses, and that involves people laughing if they like your jokes and routines, and not laughing if they don’t!

How did you first get approached to be a part of it?

It was all a hush hush TV show – like most of the shows the producers never tell you anything fully about the show in case you don’t do it and go and tell a different production company or TV channel about it. My agent first told me about this new type of stand up TV show which was like The Apprentice for comics. You’d get sent to rough gigs and tough occupations and you’d live and work with the people all week; then at the end of it you’d write new material and perform it to them live, which sounds crazy, but it was a great challenge, and stand up is a crazy and challenging job so why not do it?!

Can you remember the last person you didn’t want to hug?

Luckily I never discriminate against anyone and I give everyone a hug, even the ones who look like they’ve never been hugged before; they’re the ones who need it the most! The biggest toughest scariest looking blokes surprisingly give the best

and longest hugs. The other people I tend to find who don’t like to be hugged are people smuggling rare bird eggs!

You come across as very friendly and loveable. Do you ever get in a bad mood?

Thank you very much, I try to be as normal as I can be. I guessed Show Me The Funny was going to be a heavy reality type TV show as the cameras were on us 24 hours a day. I thought it would be easier to just act natural and normal instead of trying to keep up a front just for the camera or switch on when I was staring at the camera, as I knew it would frustrate the audience. I never have time for bad moods, I’m usually too busy running to gigs or hugging people after shows!

Are you going to continue with your children’s storytelling shows?

I’d love to do the kids story-telling show for the rest of my life. I love children’s stories, whether its writing them or reading them or listening to them, but due to the increased work load and travelling of the adult stand-up shows, there’s just not hours left in the day to write and perform any more for a while.

What’s next after the tour?

As soon as one tour finishes you have to start writing the new material for the next tour. This current tour finishes at the end of November just in time for my DVD release – throughout December I’ll be doing DVD signings and Christmas shows – then I’ll be getting ready for my spring tour in 2012!

Who would win in a tickle fight – Dan or Tiff (Dan Evans and Tiffany Stevenson, fellow TV finalists)?

It would be a tight tickle off; Dan has the height and the reach, but Tiff

definitely has the speed and the lightning reactions! Also Tiff has a big cat at home which gets spoilt and tickled all the time so I’d say she'd have the experience, whereas Dan would love getting tickled.

How would you describe the show you’ll be touring to someone who had never seen you?

My shows are like most stand-up shows except they involve a lot of cuddling and friendly banter. Each night you will come as a stranger but you’ll leave with friends and a big hug from me on the way out of the theatre.

What do you want for Christmas?

I’d love just to have a couple of days off with my family. I think people always want so many gadgets and technology, they forget that their family will never crash on them and don’t need recharging every four hours. And you don’t have to spend hours wrapping up your family!

Thanks very very very much, it’s always lovely to get a hug back, I give out so many that sometimes I can forget how nice it is to get a hug back.
