O

n the first night of our Madeira gaycation, the boys and I decide to go clubbing. Actually, that’s a lie; five of us decide to go clubbing, while a tired and emotional P throws a hissy fit, demands we order him a taxi back to the villa, then underlines his point by throwing his local speciality on the floor.

Once we have dried off our shoes and dispatched Angry Sue up the hill to Bedfordshire, the rest of us waste no time in throwing ourselves on the mercy of a local cabbie, who takes one look at what we’re wearing and drives us straight to a club called The Copacabana, situated – get this – in the bowels of a casino built to look like a volcano. Camp?

I nearly pitched a tent.

I would like to point out at this juncture that Madeira, being a Catholic island, does not have a gay scene. In fact, that was one of the reasons we chose this simple, sun-kissed spur of rock sticking out of the Atlantic as our destination in the first place. We wanted a quiet, relaxing break, away from the handbags and drag slags that characterise our lives back home.

Detective laundered £80,000 and Brighton scientists make diabetes breakthrough

A

detective brought shame on Sussex Police after admitting laundering £80,000 over five years. Det Con Darren Graysmark, 44, of Peacehaven, pleaded guilty to six charges at Maidstone Crown Court. Graysmark, who spent 23 years as a policeman, was in a relationship with a drugs dealer and is now facing jail when he is sentenced later at Maidstone.

Officers began investigating Graysmith after his partner, Darren Simpson, 42, also of Peacehaven, was found with 3kg of cocaine worth almost £150,000 in his car.

Giles York, Sussex Police Deputy Chief Constable, said: “Graysmark let himself, his colleagues and the public down, in knowingly benefiting from organised crime. He took money which was the proceeds of crime and used to it support his own lifestyle.”

Another investigation has been launched, this time into the judge who has been accused of swaying a jury which acquitted demonstrators accused of conspiring to cause £187,000 damage at the EDO plant in Moulsecoomb.

On a more positive note, Sgt Garry Botterill felt so inspired when he learnt about the charity Hounds for Heroes that he committed himself

to running 26.2 miles in the South Downs Marathon – fulfilling a personal achievement and raising over £500 at the same time.

The charity provides specially trained assistance dogs to those injured in the line of duty from both the UK Armed Forces and emergency services: www.houndsforheroes.com Meanwhile, a new-look organisation is working with GPs and the NHS to improve medical services and to better manage referrals.

The Brighton and Hove Integrated Care Service has welcomed the recent White Paper with its plans including giving groups of GPs more freedom and responsibility to manage the way care is provided.

The partnership has already led to a new community eye service which means patients can be treated outside hospital, and there are similar plans for dermatology patients.

Staying with medicine, there’s a been a breakthrough at the University of Brighton that could lead to new treatments to encourage diabetics to produce their own life-saving insulin.

A study team including scientists in Brighton believe the breakthrough could have a major impact on a disease which affects 285 million people worldwide and costs Britain’s NHS alone over £9 billion.

And in a novel demonstration, cyclists were invited to change places with a bus driver at a road safety event in New Road, Brighton.

Exchanging Places aimed to bring bus drivers and cyclists together in a bid to help them appreciate each others point of view and prevent accidents.

I first met Holly when we both worked at the Duke of York’s cinema in Brighton when she was also studying at the University in Graphic Arts. She is such a source of inspiration and hope but at 24 she is battling with cancer. We hope that the overnight canoe reflects the adventurous and daring nature of Holly's personality! I am 28 and my Dad is 51. It is a 60 mile canoe that will happen over two days and one night, taking us down Southampton water, past Portsmouth Harbour and along the south coast to Brighton pier where we will finish with a celebratory ride on the end of pier extravaganza, the Booster! I am a local actor who runs nationally touring theatre company Unpacked.

his week I wanted to take the opportunity to flag up the fact that nominations are now open for the Brighton & Hove City Sports & Physical Activity Awards 2010.

As a council, we are very keen to do everything we can to promote the uptake of sport in the city and official recognition of outstanding sporting achievement is a key part of that. With the London Olympics exactly two years away now, wouldn’t it be fantastic if we could produce a home-grown medallist from Brighton and Hove?

Professor Adrian Bone, from the University of Brighton, said the samples showed that, contrary to popular belief, the body fights back when diabetes strikes by replicating insulin-making islet cells in the patient's own pancreas.

Professor Bone said: “This increased understanding could lead to the exciting possibility of helping newly-diagnosed patients to replace their own islet cells and delay the need for insulin treatment.”

ast Tuesday I attended one of the highlights of the British Summer sporting calender – Glorious Goodwood.

I was a guest of ex-Sun editor and top PR man Stuart Higgins. Stuart (who knows absolutely everyone) was hosting a table in the aptly named Sussex Suites overlooking the stunning Sussex countryside course, which was hosted overall by ex-England rugby captain Lawrence Dallaglio – the cause of the day being the charity Tickets for Troops.

The room was dotted with sporting legends including Lawrence and another ex-rugby star, Matt Dawson. But the real stars of the room were the current and former serving armed forces who chatted to us all about their time in the war in Afghanistan – all very humbling. Put it this way, their silverwear completely outshone the bling on show in the Richmond Enclosure.

I chatted to Christina Schmid (pictured with Liz Hurley), widow of Staff Sergeant Olaf Schmid, the bomb disposal expert who was killed during duty in Afghanistan. Sergeant Schmid had successfully disposed 64 live bombs before his untimely death. I must say she was incredibly inspirational.

I sat next to news guy and Mr Fiona Phillips, Martin Frizzell, who now presents a slot from London for the Australian Channel 7. He was in for a long night as he had to stay up until 1am for his live appearance. On my left hand side was Christopher Millard, Director of Communications for the Royal Opera House. As I know absolutely nothing about Opera, Chris quickly set me

straight on Wagner’s Ring! Also on our table was a Labour Party political advisor, a 19 Management Executive and head of PR for Aviva.

Goodwood always draws some big names to its 20 race days and the opening day didn’t disappoint – the biggest name, though, had to be the very glamorous Liz Hurley. Also mingling with the masses was Aussie cricket legend Shane Warne. I spotted BBC sport presenter Clare Balding having a sneaky fag in Lord March’s private stand – she looked like she was having a day off and waved down at Channel 4 racing betting expert John McCririck, who was as flamboyant as ever, puffing away on the biggest cigar you have ever seen between live takes.

As I sneaked out early to avoid the traffic I left alongside the owner of Goodwood, Lord March – his car was parked literally right in front of the owners and trainers’ entrance (well, I guess being in charge must have some perks). He was carrying a battered brown briefcase as he slinked into his huge 7 series BMW. What was in the case LM? Winnings!!!!

HEN-PECKED PRESTON Celebrity Tweet of the week has to be from Samuel Preston – it read, ‘Please come to Lakota bar only one turntable works and I am scared of the hen dos x’. Absolutely hilarious thought of poor Preston cowering behind the decks being surrounded by drunken hens! We are still all holding our breath to see if Preston and ex-wife Chantelle will make an appearance in the last Big Brother.

A ROSE BY ANY OTHER NAME? Local actor Barrington Savoy on Shakespearean identity theft expound upon in my one-man show: The Imposter Of StratfordUpon-Avon.

The notion that a humble glovemaker’s son from the Midlands could have written all the plays and sonnets attributed to Shakespeare is ludicrous. It is clear that the real writer was a person of great education and erudition, a scholar, and almost certainly an aristocrat.

Now, some people believe that the true author was the Earl of Oxford, the Earl of Derby, or Francis Bacon, but my money’s on Roger Manners, fifth Earth of Rutland, who was very posh indeed. I believe that,

s a Shakespearean actor of some repute who has played such roles as Polonius, Ajax and John of Gaunt in such venues as The Pomegranate, Chesterfield, The Colchester Mercury, and The Mansfield Palace Theatre, I have, over the years, become more and more convinced that the man we know as ‘Shakespeare’ was nothing but a fraud, a theory I intend to

in partnership with his wife Elizabeth Sidney, Manners wrote all 38 plays, which were then taken to London and performed as written by ‘William Shakespeare.’ The real Shakespeare, an itinerant actor, comedian and drunkard, was merely a front – a figurehead who allowed the Manners to conceal their true identity for some reason.

It seems logical to me that this is what actually happened – it makes much more sense than the notion that Shakespeare simply wrote the plays attributed to him. After all, as the law of Occam’s razor states, ‘the much more complicated and needlessly convoluted solution is generally the correct one.’

I have not limited my investigations to Shakespeare, however. The same theory can be applied to any writer. For example, I believe that it would have been impossible for Charles Dickens to have written any of the 20 novels attributed to him. Dickens was the son of a navy clerk from the East End, and consequently was almost certainly barely able to write his own name. All of the oeuvre of ‘Charles Dickens’ was, I am certain, written by Benjamin Disraeli, Earl of Beaconsfield, who at least had a title. I explored this theory in my 2008 one-man show, Who The Dickens Was Dickens?

Or take Harold Pinter. My researches have shown that Pinter didn’t even go to university! And he lacked even the tawdriest of titles.

This leads me to the indisputable conclusion that all Pinter’s plays were written by Prince Charles in collaboration with Pinter’s wife, Lady Antonia Fraser, as I claimed in my 2007 one-man show, A Pause For Thought.

Other theories I intend to advance in forthcoming one-man shows include: Martin Amis’s novels were written by Prince Michael of Kent.

Running from Saturday 28 August until Sunday 12 September, Artwave promotes local art and creativity by encouraging experts and novices to open their homes and studios, showcasing their work and introducing visitors to the wealth of skill and talent on their doorstep.

part from the occasional flutter on the Grand National I am not a gambling man. Oh yes, and the odd day at Brighton Racecourse. Come to think of it, I have been to Goodwood too, and the Derby at Epsom, and I love a good night out at the dogs from time to time. But apart from that I am not a gambling man.

I have been to casinos though, the first time was a memorable trip, aged 18, to the Playboy Club in Mayfair, where the aunt of a rich friend gave us all £100 in chips on Christmas eve. I have to confess that I simply cashed in the chips; £100 was a lot of money back in 1974.

and squeak late in life as we didn’t have it in Lancashire. But I love it now and this was first class. So too was the bacon, a nice gentle smokiness, and the calves liver was more than generous and well cooked. I would perhaps have liked it a little pinker but it was still soft and creamy. The gravy was excellent and there was just the right amount. Had I wanted more I could have asked, and I am sure it would have been found.

To drink we had a great bottle of Rioja that was not suffering from a massive mark up. It worked well with both our main courses. We had a drink at the bar first too and spotted some excellent offers. On certain nights of the week you can spin the roulette wheel and the number you get is the discount you get on your meal. If you get zero your dinner is free! There are other offers too, from a team that seem keen to find fun ways of luring you in. We also noted that there is a genuinely responsible approach to gambling and that the team are there at all times to help and advise.

So, finally puds. Well Mr R was in good form and chose a bread and butter pudding which he declared not quite as good as mine, bless him, but a pretty close runner. I went classic with a pear poached in spiced red wine. It was excellent, perfectly executed and a fine finish to a sequence of dishes that had been cooked and served with a great deal of care. It’s not expensive either, and the surroundings are rather grand with that slight frisson of naughtiness that comes with people playing poker and spinning the wheel.

Membership is required but this is now available on the day and is free.

At the end of dinner we had good coffee and even an offer of the use of the chauffeur driven car home. We thanked them but declined. A bit of a walk was definitely needed.

The menu is currently one of classic dishes and, I have to say, not messed with classic dishes either. There is a nod to fashion here and there, but this is four square food to satisfy both the tummy and the soul. After a couple of dainty pre-starters I was quick off the mark to choose a crab and prawn hors d’oeuvre. It was excellent, generous, and fresh as a daisy. I also loved the fact that the lemon half was tied in a square of butter muslin, an old trick to prevent getting pips in your dinner and one that we seldom see these days. Mr R had the fried Brie, retro heaven and whopping latest 7 supports to boot. It put a big smile on his face. He moved on to a crispy roast duck with orange sauce. A real taste of the past and one delivered with style. The crispy fat was properly rendered down, the sauce bittersweet as it should be, and the flesh was succulent.

NEW MARKET As the Old Market is sold to Brighton’s Stomp, Andrew Kay hears from the venue’s current Artistic Consultant Caroline Brown and its future owners

C

aroline Brown looks visibly relieved. After years of politics and protracted business problems, the Old Market Arts Centre has finally been sold to Brighton’s own theatre company Stomp. Caroline has for many years been the force behind the acclaimed Hanover Band, an early instrument orchestra who have toured and recorded extensively on the international circuit. The Old Market Arts Centre and its development was their initiative but has always struggled to make financial sense. The refusal of planning consent to develop parts of the building that would have provided much needed funding were in part the final straw.

Caroline was keen to tell us that the venue’s much-loved Sunday Coffee Concerts series will continue, and they have found a new home for them at St Nicholas Church in Dyke Road.

“We will be able to accommodate the same size of audience there in lovely surroundings, and with a season that includes the Florestan Trio [10 October], Navarra Quarter [7 November] and the Wihan Quartet [12 December] we are confident they will continue to be a popular success.

“The principal players of The Hanover Band will also be performing on 27 January next year, and there are other concerts already booked and tickets now available through the Dome Box Office.

The very popular series of literary events hosted by City Books will also be seeking new quarters in the future.”

Eastbourne theatre tests ‘pay what you can’ scheme

With high ticket prices often seen as the barrier to drawing in new theatre audiences, this October Devonshire Park Theatre audiences in Eastbourne are being invited to ‘Pay What You Can!’ The scheme is being tested for the opening night of Punk Rock, a new play by Olivier Award winner Simon Stephens about a group of sixth-formers preparing for the end of their school lives.

It comes direct from the Lyric Hammersmith.

The idea is a simple one: on Tuesday 12 October there will be

no set ticket prices and audiences are asked to pay whatever they can for their tickets. Eastbourne Theatres, Artistic Director Chris Jordan says: “We don’t want price to be a barrier and hope that by taking away set ticket prices for this performance, people will try something new. There is no catch!

Revolving around vocalist/bassist Luke Top and guitarist Lewis Pesacov, they enlist friends and colleagues wherever they go, including members of Foreign Born and Glasser, former members of We Are Scientists, The Fall and a variety of visual artists. Musical influences have sprung from South African, Ethiopian and Eritrean music, while lead singer Top, who was born and raised in Israel, sings in Hebrew.

PLAY AWAY A secret music festival in a Sussex deer park? It has to be the work of local party organisers Playgroup...

“W

e could have done with a whole year to plan the ‘big one,’” says Declan Cassidy, one of the people behind the brilliantly successful and fantastically fun Playgroup events that have taken place over the last few years.

“We’re hoping for around 2,000 people. We could grow up to 5,000 and we have a five year lease on the site if we don’t screw up this year.”

It’s always a big ask to organise a festival, particularly its first year, but Declan has organised some of the most talked about events of recent times, culminating in a number of shows that saw them take over the whole of Komedia (three separate performance spaces) and featuring some of the best and most funkiest local talent as well as the pick of the crop from around the globe.

“This has been five years in the making... we did our first ever event at The Volks and there were over 200 people having a great time! We’re completely local and the festival will represent what Brighton is all about. It’s amazing that something like this hasn’t been put on before. We’ve got such a creative city, perhaps the most creative in the world!”

Smaller, more intimate bespoke events are all the rage at the moment – and with the country currently experiencing economic difficulties, it’s all about getting it just right. “It’s being held in a stunning deer park, just 30 miles from Brighton.

values of Sunrise, the fun and silliness of Secret Garden Party and the musical line-up of Bestival.”

Having experienced many Playgroup events we can issue a sure-fire guarantee that that is exactly what you’ll get this year; but you’ll have to trust them on this.

“This year it’s all about the mystery – the wonderful, the weird, the bespoke and all those local bands. In our first year people have to trust us and really want to go... It’s like they are making a pact with us. We know that all who understand what we do will have an awesome time, and won’t necessarily be there for the line up, which is being kept under wraps – although individual bands are advertising on their respective websites...”

But do expect over 60 top quality bands, DJs, loads of games, a round-the-clock cinema tent, chill-out cafés, walkabout acts, fancy dress, and plenty more hedonistic and relaxing activities. Hot Plate

Aged 14-19 and obsessed with The X Factor? Smitten with Glee? Convinced you would have topped the class on Fame Academy? The Dome’s annual Rockshop is a one-stop shop of intense and expert musical tuition, at the end of which you’ll be performing at a special concert. But you can forget about cover versions – here the music will all be brand new. Herbie Flowers will lead a team of music and vocal tutors from the worlds of rock, pop, folk, jazz and classical music. The workshops run until Friday, during which time bands will be formed and songs written and perfected – ready to be performed in the Big Night Out concert on Friday evening. Now in its fourth year at Brighton Dome, these three-day courses include workshops on songwriting, guitar styles, bass, keyboard skills, rhythm section basics, percussion, chord charts,voice and improvisation. Each Rockshop is for 10 guitars, 10 bass players, 10 drummers, 10 vocalists, plus a mix of brass, woodwind and string players.

Who's the biggest name to play here?

Seann Walsh is probably the most recognisable – before he started his meteoric rise.

Who will be the next big names that you’ve seen on the WIAB stage?

I don’t really want to single anyone out and it's difficult to speculate.

There hasn't been any shortage of talent to appear – a couple of names that spring to mind would be Robin Buckland, who made the SYTYF [So You Think You’re Funny] finals last year, and Murray Cummings, who's just been announced as a semi finalist at SYTYF this year.

Who would be your ideal line-up?

Ronnie Barker, Frankie Howerd, Jo Brand, Rita Rudner, Eddie Izzard and Zoe Lyons.

What are the best and worst aspects of being the compere?

I love rootling around the newspapers and media networks to find topical stuff and unusual stories – but this is also one of the toughest aspects because the material is always untested so you have no idea if it's going to work. I love the sense of comradeship there always seems to be among the comics.

What's the best thing about comedy in Brighton?

There's so much of it! And at a great diversity of venues. There really is something to suit every taste and every pocket – it's a really thriving circuit and seems to be producing some innovative talent.

his is the first in our August series looking at the buzzing local new act comedy clubs that have given our city such a good name in the comedy world. New act nights nurture homegrown talent and give you a chance to see the big acts on their way up – plus the gems that make you laugh loud but don’t always make it onto the larger comedy circuit.

Jaq Bayles has been running the popular free comedy night Walks Into A Bar for two years. She’s compere and booker, and just the right person to set the tone for the first in this month’s series looking at some of the lovely new act nights in Brighton.

L7 Under review ZAPPA MEETS ZAPPA

As someone old enough to have seen Frank play in his heyday, seeing his son Dweezil lead a Zappa tribute band was not something I necessarily had high hopes about; not least because, apart from the technical musical challenges involved, Frank's music could be as infantile, inaccessible and self indulgent as it could be mind blowingly brilliant. However, this was a jaw droppingly impressive show.

Though lacking his dad's madcap stage charisma, Dweezil's guitar prowess did his dad proud and his eight-piece band were more than up to meeting the incredibly complex musicianship demanded. Brighton Centre, 22 July JJJJJ Mark Ede

TWELFTH NIGHT

A very strong and vibrant production from Rainbow Theatre in which pretty much everyone was firing on all cylinders – so much so that it’s a fool’s errand to pick out particular performances, although the reading of Malvolio’s love letter was a highlight, as were the various doubletakes to the audience from Viola and Sebastian. There was not one shuffling, distracted kid in Highdown Gardens: I get the distinct impression that, for the youngsters, this could be the beginning of a life-long love affair with Shakespeare. Be praised, the whole pack of ‘em.

SKA TOONS

A gloriously infectious and effervescent mix of ska, funk and a dash of jazz, which had everyone dancing either on the floor (no room), or polishing their seats with their backsides. The level of musicianship was extraordinarily high, especially from the tenor and soprano sax. The choice of songs was frequently either brave or barking mad; ska-ed up renditions of ‘Witchita Lineman’, ‘Walk On By’ and ‘Apache’ showed the band at their tightest and most winningly cheeky. They were clearly having as good a time as the audience. A truly great night out and well worth missing the last bus home for – which I did.

THE MAN WHO WAS HAMLET

There’s no shortage of sweat, script work or billowing-shirted emoting in George Dillon’s new one-man show about Edward de Vere – courtier, poet, swordsman, traveller and leading

candidate in the alternative Shakespeare authorship debate. Here William from Stratford is an eggheaded bumpkin who can’t even manage a love poem for his wife. It is the arrogant, witty and tempestuous de Vere who pens the plays – to entertain his queen and his own captive spirit of adventure, and, in the case of Hamlet, to exorcise personal grief. Dillon’s de Vere displays great predilection for the tragical and comical, but none of the requisite talent for human sympathy. At 90 shouty minutes this feels more like one actor’s strategy to make you listen to his Hamlet than a tale crying out to be told.

PAINS OF BEING PURE OF HEART

The eagerly awaited return of The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart was watched by a very happy, very sweaty crowd of 14 to 40-something indie kids. With their trademark catchiness in evidence from the getgo, the New Yorkers proved their mettle with what sounded like a greatest hits set, despite their only having released one album. With singer/guitarist Kip and keyboardist Peggy’s harmonies reflecting their C86 influences, they also proved they can rock with Stones-like riffs on a number of short, sharp but still sweet numbers, such as ‘Come Saturday’. An hour of perfectly formed punk pop from a band destined for greatness.

BEDROOM FARCE

Alan Ayckbourn’s position as king of farce has been secure for many years. But Bedroom Farce is now 35 years old and, to be honest, it shows.

There is a sense not of a period piece, but of a dated piece, with the core of the play being the morals of relationships and sex. Despite this, the production is good and, in particular, the excellent performances from Juliet Mills and Bruce Montague who, as the senior couple, are totally convincing. Their comic timing is superb and their relationship believable. Julia Mallam also gives an excellent performance, breathing some sense of reality into the contrived form of the piece. For those, three more stars than for the whole.

W

ith more people knowing the story of Pygmalion from the musical version My Fair Lady than Shaw’s original, the play comes as something of a surprise.

The story, while almost wholly the same, is almost wholly different in tone. There is little doubt that GBS was using comedy to write a serious play about class. But perhaps more importantly the play is about acceptance.

Professor Henry Higgins is often portrayed as a bombastic bully and Eliza Doolittle as a caterwauling slattern. But each, in their own way, are deeply damaged and vulnerable creatures scarred by their own nature and their social position.

Eliza gives as good as she gets.

Higgins is immensely aware of his shortcomings, his disdain of the female race, and his intolerance of people that he considers his intellectual inferiors.

Pickering offers balance, he is a man of similar intellect but with social skills. Mrs Higgins similarly adds rational thought and acceptance that no two are alike.

Rupert Everett plays Higgins as a blustering, arrogant man child. His mother is the only force that can reckon with him and to whom he bows. It’s a fresh and witty approach and he milks the character’s misogyny for every last drop to great effect.

Eliza does eventually get to him and, in the final tragic scene, he is left a crumpled unfulfilled mess. He loses her and with her he loses a sense of hope.

Honeysuckle Weeks embraces the role with humour and energy; she is a firebrand, bawling the odds at every juncture until she is finally ‘tamed’. Only then do we see that behind this coarse flower girl is a very smart young woman.

Social behaviours and morals are never far away but all are thrown into question by the appearance of Alfred Doolittle, Eliza’s dustman father. Alfred is the real philosophical core of the play. His simple approach to life, to being ‘deserving poor’, leaves everyone dumbfounded at his forthright and rational views on everyone’s true place in the world. And Phil Davies, as ever, brings the role to the stage with a sense of pure genius. Doolittle is no clown, he is the thread of weird moral clarity around which they play is woven.

Susie Blake turns in a fine performance that confirms her skill as a stage actress and Stephanie Cole is on great form as Mrs Higgins, the all seeing and totally wise face of the upper classes who has little time for the pretence of those who surround her.

Peter Eyre’s Pickering forms a solid and comforting underpinning of the whole – but all eyes are. of course. on Everett. His Higgins has a boyish quality, mummy’s boy, spoilt boy and bad boy too. A pacey, beautifully designed production that never flags.

Make ’em laugh

hat’s it, I’m done.” I have never said those words in a race before.

Well, before now, anyway. There have been times during my previous marathons when I haven’t been sure I could carry on. Going past the 19 mile marker during the Brighton Marathon, I was on the phone to my wife, on the verge of tears, saying I couldn’t do it. But I did. Slower than I had intended, but I crossed the finish line (with a sprint finish too).

But not this time. Previously, the furthest I have run on trails is 13.1 miles, which was so much fun that I thought I’d do more of it. So when my friend Nuala mentioned she was doing the ‘Jack and Jill’, 30 Mile Ultra Downland Challenge across the South Downs I thought, ‘Why not?

Sounds like fun!’ And it was. For a while. Despite being quite hot, running up over the South Downs Way “I couldn’t have is breathtaking. And I was running in taken another step good company, with my friend Nuala, who is running 12 marathons in 12 even with a gun months (I’ll tell you more about her later) and her friend Vinnie, also to my head” running his first ultra. We set off together and I began fielding the usual questions about my lack of shoes.

But by the time we got to the 15 mile turnaround, Nu had done her Energizer Bunny trick and powered ahead, and when we got to some horrific gravel pavement, Vinnie also pulled away. We met up again at the aid station and Vinnie and I continued on together. I was using energy gels, basically carbohydrates concentrated in a variety of fruit flavours that normally taste awful.

My usual brand wasn’t available so I had gone with a tropical fruit version of another, which did not taste great.

By the time I got to mile 20 I was running on empty. Vinnie kept me going to the aid station at mile 22 and then I spoke those words.

It was not a good feeling, being driven back to the finish where I returned my race number and had to watch others cross the line. My feet were fine, in fact they weren’t even that dirty, but I felt so physically drained, so completely devoid of energy, as if I couldn’t have taken another step even with a gun to my head. Everyone has told me that I did well to get to 22 miles and I know they’re right, but there were eight miles left. I will be back, though, and I will beat it.

As I said earlier, my friend Nuala is doing something amazing. She is running 12 marathons in 12 months to raise money for the Wooden Spoon charity. Wooden Spoon supports a whole range of projects designed to improve life for disadvantaged children and young people throughout the UK and Ireland. Yesterdays ultra was number eight for the year and she’s still going strong. Even though she is a shoe-wearer, this is an amazing effort.

n Monday ITV looks back at ‘the unforgettable’ Bob Monkhouse. The son of a successful businessman, Bob was a chap who put work above everything else but still managed to charm all that he met. It’s amazing how quickly the fella who Rory Bremner sent up as a grinning humming gameshow host has become a respected comic elder. He who works and endures, shaking off an unfashionable oldfashioned reputation to become an ironic selfdeprecating icon, laughs longest. Even from beyond the grave.

It’s become quite fashionable of late to

Just look at the recent dramatic memorendi of Frankie Howerd and Kenneth Williams, not to mention Tony Hancock and, if you really want to travel back, Al Jolson in 1946.

If you make people laugh, maybe you have a little bit of the voodoo in you that captivates your audience

into devotion. After all, a laugh is the most universal feelgood factor, no matter what your language, culture or background. It’s what people tick for when answering a personals ad – ‘must have a GSOH’.

(Like there’s a bad kind.)

But just because we like it, is that any reason to transform successful comedians into cultural icons more than in any other creative field? You don’t find BBC3 documentaries into the origins of Mr Kipling, and many grandmothers have ensured that we enjoyed his cakes every weekend visit, with grins and jam on our faces in equal measure.

Perhaps a retrospective for a successful comedian is similar to a carriage clock for a company man – a big thank you for all your years’ work.

But then our funny people generally don’t stop until they’re dead, so it’s not as if they’re around to appreaciate the nod. And actors rarely get such recognition.

The stories we bandy about in pubs and at parties aren’t about life’s tragedies, they’re about moments of comedy, reminiscences of the ridiculous. Maybe we prefer to remember times of laughter than of tears.
