Eminent experimental psychologist Steven Pinker added his voice to protests against the closure of a university linguistics department. Pinker, who popularised the theory that language is an ‘instinct’ and was named as one of the most influential people in the world by TIME magazine, said the move by Sussex University would be “a big step backwards”

Under-17s and over 60s were given the chance to claim access to free swimming at council-run pools in Brighton and Hove. Eligible swimmers must register using a passport or original birth certificate for under 17s or a driving licence or passport for over 60s. Free swimming is allowed at certain times.

The South Downs became England’s tenth National Park. It includes the hotly contested Western Weald, Ditchling and Lewes, after 20,000 postcards were sent to Defra asking to keep those areas within the boundary.

God squad World leaders, animals and celebrities will be seen gathered in church for a bizarre service during Brighton Festival. Local fine artists Sam Hewitt and Shardcore have invited artists to submit life-size seated portraits of anyone they like to be lined up along the pews at St Paul’s Church in West Street. The exhibition is part of the Artists Open Houses Festival. Last year they held a similar exhibition, MASS, at Clermont Church near Preston Park Station which featured 58 portraits of characters including Tony Blair, Osama Bin Laden, a topless woman and a pig in a US Army uniform. Be proud Brighton and Hove city council leader Mary Mears on what makes us special ’m proud to announce that the council will be honouring a true legend, Henry Allingham, who is one of only two surviving veterans of World War One. On Thursday 30 April we’ll give Henry the ‘freedom of the city’ and we’ll be calling on the Government to also bestow Henry with a national honour. In May we’ll have the Great Escape Festival (Thursday 14 to Saturday 16 May) which will see over 300 local and international artists performing in venues across the city. And there’ll be more events during summer such as the International Festival of Sport and Pride in Brighton and Hove.

The spaces still have a power and people still behave in a churchy way when they visit them. In and of themselves, churches are really interesting spaces.“ Although, they have already confirmed many paintings by artists from around Brighton, London and Bristol they are appealing for more. Egg-citing This Easter, local letting specialist Leaders will be giving tenants the chance to win up to £100 off their administration fees and win an Easter egg.
