A LETTER FROM THE EDITOR By Ernie Yuen Aloha, March 9, 2020 was the day America hit a turning point with the effects created by the nationwide spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19). Starting in December we watched as the drama unfolded in China, not knowing what was coming to America. No one knew how quickly this would spread and the effects that would touch everyone’s life in one way or another. City by city, the local governments were shutting down their cities to control the spread of this invisible virus. Social distancing would become the new normal. Wash your hands, don’t touch your mouth, eyes, face, cough into your elbow and if you’re not feeling well stay home, we all heard over and over again. We all witnessed the closing of the Las Vegas strip and many businesses, more than 90% of the cities workers were laid off, losing their jobs. Air flights were cancelled and many companies stopped all business travel, conventions, large company meetings, weddings, sporting and special events, either postpone or cancelled. People went into a panic hording bottled water, and toilet paper. Grocery store shelves were empty, people bought grocery’s, filling their pantry and refrigerators to capacity. The Las Vegas PRIDE Magazine Committee wanted to create a special “CoronaVegas” Issue. This is a special digital only issue, because we have no way to distribute printed copies with only essential business open and we are all confined to our homes. Staying home, practicing social distancing, however, almost everyone is on their mobile phones and home computers. It was determined that a digital platform was the best way to share our magazine. The Las Vegas PRIDE Magazine Committee wanted to publish important information provided by the CDC, we also wanted to share local, national and international news stories. Our goal was to have as much important information in one publication to aid our community and educate all of us with the Coronavirus COVID-19. There are many unknowns and things change every day. 8 | Las Vegas PRIDE Magazine

Added to the mix in the magazine are fun articles written by our Las Vegas PRIDE Board of Directors and partners of Las Vegas PRIDE. As we continue to be on lock down, we included some helpful information about social distancing, supporting our seniors, special senior shopping hours, and dealing with your children, since all schools are closed. How to manage your anxiety during these stressful times. Washing your hands and managing your money, helpful hints from our Treasure Freddy Lopez. Andrew Ryan from Afan came up with 24 tips for social distancing Included is a special report about how this nationwide shutdown is affecting prides all over the country. Plans for our Las Vegas PRIDE Festival and Parade are still underway. With social distancing, video group chat and phone conference are the new norm for the Las Vegas PRIDE Board. We also need to thank all of our heroes, All over the country and here in Las Vegas, Scientists, Doctors, Nurses and First Responders work tirelessly during this coronavirus pandemic, they all have been on the front lines treating coronavirus patients and promoting ways to help slow the spread of the illness. They are public servants in the highest sense, and we can’t show them enough of our gratitude. There’s no better time to shout out to these Health Care workers and First Responders than in this moment and say Thank You for Your Service! Remember, they show up for work, so you can stay home! We also need to thank all of the retail workers working long shifts, keeping the grocery store shelves stocked, including cashiers and front end workers. Let’s not forget all of the truck drivers transporting all this inventory. We are Vegas Strong, and we will rise from this, for now we need to follow directions and take the necessary precautions for our health and well-being. This is only temporary and before we know it the lights will shine bright once again in Las Vegas. Please be safe, be careful, stay home, wash your hands and stay healthy. In PRIDE! We invite you to participate in a study focusing on your health behaviors and life experiences as a Veteran with a

LGBT or related identity.

The goal of our Health for Every Veteran Study is to better understand the experiences of Veterans from all backgrounds and promote their health and well-being, including those with LGBT or related identities. We are especially interested in hearing the diverse voices within our communities. Conducted by researchers at VA Puget Sound Health Care System, the study consists of completing a confidential, webbased questionnaire every nine months for approximately two years (for a total of four questionnaires). All research activities are completed online, with no in-person visits required.

RISE UP By Andra Day

And I’ll rise up I’ll rise like the day I’ll rise up I’ll rise unafraid I’ll rise up And I’ll do it a thousand times again And I’ll rise up High like the waves I’ll rise up In spite of the ache I’ll rise up And I’ll do it a thousands times again For you For you For you For you When the silence isn’t quiet And it feels like it’s getting hard to breathe And I know you feel like dying But I promise we’ll take the world to its feet And move mountains We’ll take it to its feet And move mountains

You’re broken down and tired Of living life on a merry go round And you can’t find the fighter But I see it in you so we gonna walk it out And move mountains We gonna walk it out And move mountains
