On behalf of the Las Vegas PRIDE Board of Directors, I am excited to begin 2018 Las Vegas PRIDE! We are celebrating the 35th Annual Las Vegas PRIDE this year - and I am very proud to share our recent and upcoming milestones. October marks national LGBT History month. Now - as much as any other time - we are reminded of the importance of LGBT visibility, positivity, and solidarity. We strive to bring fun to all that we do - but we also hope to inspire and drive growth and acceptance of LGBT issues and causes. Our theme for 2018 is, “All We Need is LOVE”. We have received our biggest support from our sponsors ever! Ada Vox AN INTERVIEW By Briana Lake
Two-time American Idol Alumni, Semifinalist, and Top 8 contestant; Ada Vox holds all of these titles, and her resume continues to grow. From working a stage to releasing her first single, Ada has fearlessly blazed a trail for other drag performers; and she hopes to continue to inspire others to dream and do more through her hard work and dedication to her craft. Q: You’ve been on “American Idol” now not only once, but twice. How has this experience shaped you as a person and singer? A: All of the times I’ve auditioned or anything and everything has been a learning experience. Doing a show like American Idol has taught me a lot about what the big-time industry will be like. I’ve learned a lot about who I am and what I can do as not just a singer but as an artist. I couldn’t be more thankful for the opportunities it has granted me and the friendships I have gained. Q: You have been open about facing negative comments after your first appearance on “American Idol” and you bounced back so beautifully – do you have any advice for anyone facing similar negativity? A: Negativity is all to familiar in today’s society. We all have to realize that through all of the darkness there is light. I had to learn to create my own. Always remain strong, follow your dreams, and let your heart lead you on your path to love and success. Q: You have performed so many amazing songs including a memorable performance of Radiohead’s “Creep”, do you have a favorite song to perform? A: As a drag diva, I love a good classic diva tune. I honestly love to perform anything that allows me to dig deep into my soul. A couple of my favorites include “I Know Where I’ve Been” from Hairspray, “I Will Always Love you” by Whitney, and of course “Creep” by Radiohead. All of those

A: I was originally inspired to perform as Ada after my run on season 12. I was invited out to perform in my hometown’s pride celebration. That was the first time I ever got to see drag queens! BETTY WHO Celebrates PRIDE with Performance at Official PRIDE After Show at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas
Las Vegas PRIDE is just around the corner, which means it’s time to start planning how best to celebrate. The Official PRIDE After Show on Saturday, Oct. 20 will take place at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas’ Boulevard Pool, where fans can enjoy performances by pop duo Superfruit and singer-songwriter Betty Who under the stars and among the glimmering lights of the iconic Las Vegas Strip. Australian-born pop star Betty Who has quietly elevated herself to a worldwide phenomenon, receiving acclaim from the likes of Entertainment Weekly, Vogue, Rolling Stone, Buzzfeed, Elle Magazine, and more. Betty most recently released her first independent EP in five years, Betty Pt. 1, out everywhere now via AWAL Recordings.

An activist for LGBTQ rights, Betty has attended PRIDE festivals around the United States and uses her music as a platform to be an outspoken supporter of the LGBTQ community. Betty also recently worked with the Fab Five crew of the Netflix Original series, Queer Eye, to revamp the show’s theme song, “All Things (Just Keep Getting Better).” With the gorgeous Las Vegas Strip as their backdrop, fans can catch Betty Who along with Superfruit

Las Vegas is hosting its annual PRIDE Festival October 19 through 21 and everyone is invited! Add a soundtrack to your PRIDE experience this year with the Official PRIDE After Show at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas on Saturday, Oct. 20. Featuring pop duo Superfruit and singer-songwriter Betty Who, this outdoor concert will take place under the stars at the resort’s Boulevard Pool, with the breathtaking view of the Las Vegas Strip serving as its backdrop. Superfruit consists of vocalists and YouTube sensations, Scott Hoying and Mitch Grassi. The duo hails from the multi-Platinum-selling a cappella group, Pentatonix. There are many reasons why bisexuals stay closeted and you have your reasons. There are many incorrect assumptions made about bisexuals and their behavior. These assumptions continue because bi individuals remain a silent and hidden majority in the community. Recent research has shown that when most participants were first aware of their attraction to both women and men (usually when quite young), they discounted one or the other and described being fraught with selfdoubts and inability to make sense of their attractions. Many participants attributed the length of time coming to acknowledgement of their bisexuality and the confusion along the way to the lack of role models and

Famed drag queen, actress, and comedienne extraordinaire, Bianca Del Rio is best known for winning season six of Ru Paul’s Drag Race, and for her irreverent wit. After her victory, Bianca has been busy building her brand with her feature-length films, Hurricane Bianca and sequel Hurricane Bianca: From Russia with Hate, her book Blame It On Bianca Del Rio: The Expert on Nothing with an Opinion on Everything, comedy tours and specials, and even a line of makeup remover. Bianca has agreed to share some inspiration, laughs, and of course, a little of her trademark sass. Q: You started out at a young age as a talented clothing designer and began performing drag shortly thereafter – was there ever a time that you wanted to be in anything other than show business? A: For my entire childhood when I would blow out birthday candles or throw a penny in a wishing well or see a shooting star, I would wish with all my might to work in a circus with elephants when I grow up. I ended up working in nightclubs with Lady Bunny. Guess I should’ve been more specific. Q: Were there any challenges that you faced during your career that you would like to share with other aspiring drag performers? A: Yes...razor bumps. I would like all aspiring drag queens to know that shaving is the enemy and razor bumps will haunt you for the rest of your natural drag life!! Q: If so, how did you overcome these challenges? A: Lots and lots of foundation. Q: You have an extensive list of movies that you’ve been involved in – do you have a favorite appearance? A: Out of my extensive list of high quality films, my proudest moment was in “Look What The Boys Dragged In”....a

I wasn’t in the sex scene. I was in the pivotal plot bit that lead up to the guys having sex. Q: What was your experience like winning “Ru Paul’s Drag Race”? A: All joking aside, winning “Ru Paul’s Drag Race” truly changed my life. Before being on the show, I was working in a Broadway costume shop during the day and doing drag at night. I planned to stop doing drag when I turned 40. Well, I’m 43 years old now and I’m doing drag full time. I’m incredibly grateful and have no plans to stop anytime soon. I never expected my entire life to change the way it has. Prior to winning, I had only been out of the country on cruises. Now I’ve traveled to over 20 different countries performing in drag. It’s insane. TV is a powerful platform.

Then I have a couple weeks off before heading back to Europe for another couple weeks of shows, and then back to the US for my final two shows of this tour in Las Vegas and Palm Springs!! Q: You’ve been so successful in your role as an entrepreneur, what are your suggestions for drag queens looking to follow in your footsteps and grow their own brand?

AMERICA’S FIRST ALL OPENLY GAY BOYBAND
REACH FOR THE “RAINBOW” BY JOHN STEIN
Jay, Mike, Randy, Devin and Gama are ECHO V, five guys with distinct, echoing voices that combine to create one beautiful sound. By all outward appearances, they seem to be the typical boyband with good looks, lush harmonies and killer choreography, but they have one important difference: they’re all gay. Their debut single, “Rainbow,” reflects their decision to be out about their sexuality. While it is a fun, high energy pop anthem with an explosive hook that will get listeners dancing and singing, it also has an important message. “Be proud,” explains Jay. “Our hope is that the song inspires people to stand up and claim their truth, be happy with who they are and find comfort in the fact that they are not alone.”
recorded the song. “It kind of came from a place deep within that was filled with despair and even frustration. The first few lines of the song are about finding yourself. It then continues with how the struggle to conform to society’s standards can be harmful to some. In the second verse, there is a moment of acceptance and defiance where we come to terms with how this one life is for us and not for them.” “Rainbow is about unapologetically owning your multifaceted-ness and realizing that you have to live for yourself. It’s a journey to selfdiscovery and the strength it takes to live life in the open, day in and out.”
Part of what the boys of ECHO V are hoping to break is the stereotype that being an out, gay musician is a nail in the coffin of an artist’s career. In 2018, “The narrative in ‘Rainbow’ is the entertainment industry is more personal,” Jay continues from the vibrant than ever with the mainstream Los Angeles studio where the band success of television shows like Queer 56 | Las Vegas PRIDE Magazine
Eye and RuPaul’s Drag Race; but there is still progressing to be made, especially in the music arena. “We hope our album can be enjoyed by all regardless of age, gender, sexuality or race because art and creation is universal,” says Mike. Mike helped to conceptualize the music video for “Rainbow,” along with videographer Chris Greenwell and editor Adam Amore. They drew inspiration from The Wizard of Oz in terms of color scheme and the switch from black and white to color. (Sharp listeners will notice the lyrics of the song also draw inspiration from The Wizard of Oz.) The video cuts back and forth between ECHO V singing and real people of all different shapes, sizes and colors marching in Pride parades. Mike felt it important that the video show the personalities of each boy in the band but also show

Mike was born in Pennsylvania and moved to Rhode Island when he was 10. He grew up in a typical working-middle class household with his parents fully supporting his love for music and financing his hopes and dreams the best they could, for which he is extremely grateful. Unfortunately, they weren’t as supportive of their son being gay. Jay, (from Sanford, NC), Gama, (Mexico), Randy (Denver) and Devin, a self-described musical theater nerd who grew up in central Florida, also experienced difficulty with family after coming out to them. “My mother would be a lot happier if I were not gay,” admits Jay. But their relationship
Gama, Randy and Devin also say their relationships with family have gotten better. The five were united by their management who were looking to build the next generation of boy bands. At first, management didn’t know the group they had assembled were all gay. It was the guys that realized it after coming together. They and management decided to go with it. “At the end of the day we are musicians who take a great pride in the art we create,” Jay explains. “We want listeners to be proud of who they are and there is no other way for us to do that other than to be honest with who we are.”

MEET THE MEN OF
AUSSIE HEAT < ADAM BARR (MC) Adam was born Melbourne, Australia, grew up playing professional tennis. He had a bad injury at the age of 17 and decided to join the military. After the military he got offered a contract for Universal Studios Japan, where he worked for four years. Coming back home to Australia, he signed with Australiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s biggest modeling agency and worked full-time as a model for two years. He then auditioned for Universal Studios Singapore, which he landed and worked for them 2 years. He then moved to Los Angeles to pursue film and television acting, where he was offered the MC role in Aussie Heat. He loves his job making audiences have a fun experience. Fun fact: Adam owns his own medical cannabis business, Green Barr, which he has a line of products which target health and wellness and fitness professionals.
GEORGE BLICK (HANDSOME GEORGE) > Born in Melbourne, Australia, George started line dancing at the early age of 10. He then went on competing in Line dance where he won 6 consecutive world championship titles. His desire for competing grew stronger where he then found himself competing in Latin and ballroom dance. Fun fact: George landed himself a full ride scholarship to Lane Theater Arts in London. During his time studying, George was asked to dance in front of the Queen for the Royal variety show. After graduating college, George auditioned for Royal Caribbean and performed out at sea in over 50 countries. He now resides in Las Vegas. George is honored to be here for his first season of Aussie Heat!
< BEN FORBES (THE CLEANER) Ben grew up in Sydney, Australia. He performed for a show called Hot Shots, Sydneyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s best male revue show. He moved to America to pursue new opportunities where he was hired by Aussie Heat and has been a key part of the team ever since. Fun fact: Ben studies fire science at CSN. He looks forward to be a firefighter in the near future. Ben wanted us to tell you he rides a motorbike.

JAYDEN BROWN (YOUNG BUCK) > Jayden, born in Tasmania, Australia. At a very young age Jayden was passionate about dance and performing. Jayden was the lead dancer in Australia’s number one male revue, where the Aussie Heat scouted him and hired him at the start of 2018 to perform here in Las Vegas. Fun fact: Jayden’s parents own a grocery store in Tasmania in a very small town, if you’re lucky when he’s not performing he may be there scanning your items and checking you out.
< LENNY TRAE (POP AND LOCK KING) Lenny grew up in Melbourne, Australia, as a youngster, he loved different forms of dance. He is very passionate about old school hip-hop and pop and lock dancing. He’s our choreographer and dance captain. He also handles our music mixing and visuals. Fun fact: Lenny loves playing PlayStation and watching Avenger movies.
SIMON ATA (BREAKDANCER) > Simon is from Melbourne Australia, grew up breakdancing for Australia’s most popular breakdancing crew, Wicked Force and toured the world breakdancing and performing. Also, Simon was a finalist on ‘So you think you can Dance, Australia’. Fun fact: Simon is a physiotherapist, so if any of you have sore shoulders he can help you with a massage, lol. Simonster (his nickname) has his own company teaching people to achieve their goals in strength and fitness. He’s been working with Aussie Heat since the start, three years ago. He’s not only a crowd favorite, but a great friend of all the guys on the team.
< SIMON FARROW (6’4” MOUNTAIN OF MUSCLE) Originally from the surf coast of Australia Simon’s professional entertainment career for the past 18 years took hold after graduating with his Dance / Theater degree. After working for years in the fields of classical, contemporary and commercial dancing he shifted to musical theater, this line of work moved him into Film / Television work as a Stunt Actor. He has worked around the world and beside some of the major names in the industry, now he is very happy to be here in Las Vegas working for Aussie Heat. Simon feels privileged to be performing alone side such talented performers and for such warm crowds, seeing the amazing smiles on their faces makes the journey worthwhile. FLAGS, COLORS & SYMBOLS EXPLAINED Pride festivals/parades are famous the world over for their exuberant and unique message-driven themes. A colorful, fabulous celebration, parades are often distinguished by lively participants with brandish colorful flags and symbols. But what does each color of the pride flag represent? What does that pink triangle stand for? Ever wonder what the meaning of each color is? Las Vegas PRIDE’s Mission is “to educate the community by invoking, promoting, and celebrating lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender pride.” In pursuance of this mission, we would like to share with you the meaning of the colors displayed in some of the LGBT community flags as well as basic facts about some of our symbols.

Las Vegas Queer Arts Film Festival (LVQA) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit that is focused on creating a platform for LGBTQ+ filmmakers to share their artistic work. This is the first allinclusive, diversity-driven film festival for LGBTQ+ filmmakers and artists hosted in Las Vegas, NV. Its inaugural run will take place on November 2 November 4, 2018 at Eclipse Theaters in downtown Las Vegas. The festival will be a mixture of short film blocks and feature length films with each project having had a member of the community playing a prominent role in its production, or encompassing a story that speaks directly to or from within the community itself. The festival will kick-off with an opening social mixer on November 2, 2018. The film screenings will run throughout the weekend of November 3 - 4 for ticketed audiences. Submissions for
