A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Welcome to the 2019 CAPI Conference in the wonderful city of Las Vegas! I hope that everyone has enjoyed safe traveling and that everyone is ready for a weekend full of networking, collaborating, and shared learning. I would like to thank my Las Vegas PRIDE Board and the rest of the Las Vegas team for not only being able to host the conference but putting together an amazing weekend for us all. Thank you to the CAPI Board, Nenette, Ron, Paul and Richard- it’s been a fun and interesting year. I would also like to thank all of the amazing presenters that will be facilitating workshops throughout the weekend, they all sound amazing! To the many volunteersthank you for all of your help. As we move further into the climate of 2019 it is becoming more apparent that the work that you all do is more important than ever. We must continue to move forward, even in these uncertain times, we need to support one another and stand as one community. My hope is that during this conference you will meet people, gain knowledge and receive tools that you will be able to take back to your Pride, that will help you succeed even more than you already have. Presented by Freddy Lopez We will review different social media platforms, such as snapchat, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and others. From creating a profile, managing your profile as a nonprofit, and running social media campaigns across different platforms, this workshop will help keep your organization at the forefront of the social media world. Remember, if you’re not on social media, you don’t exist!

Fundraising Insights (Zeus C)

Presented by Paul Huddleston, CAPI Secretary Round Table Discussion- Develop basic skills on developing both short-term and long-term fundraising tactics, planning a realistic budget, and how to utilize your assets to their maximum potential.

Board Development (Athena)

Presented by Ernie Yuen, Las Vegas PRIDE Executive Director, CAPI President Many people have different reasons for joining a 501c3 nonprofit board. Some people have a lot of free time and want to add organized activity to their daily routine Some people enjoy the organization and wants to be more involved. It takes a special kind of person to join a 501c3 board. It can be crazy, but most of the time the end results can be very satisficing a life changing Every board member brings value to the group, combined the results can be amazing. There still needs to be balance and organization. Key leaders and a strong support team We will review responsibilities, learning to set goals, review and analyze efforts, review recruitment, talk about fundraising efforts, and removal of non-performing board members

WORKSHOP SESSION 2 (9:55 AM) Privilege Walk (Parthenon 5)

Presented by Jorge Solorio, Las Vegas PRIDE Vice President Sometimes we don’t notice privileges because they’re so ingrained in our culture. We are confronted on a daily basis with cultural and social norms. We are also confronted with marginalized communities and perspectives that deserve to have a voice. Understanding and acknowledging privileges is key to understanding why and how we react and perceive our surroundings. In order to objectively reflect on our interactions, we need to focus on the inter-

sectionality of privilege. It is an essential framing that can help us understand how every privilege or marginalization exists in a different but related place.

Trans Pride in Your Community (Zeus C)

Presented by Jamie Lee Sprague-Ballou, Las Vegas Trans Pride It’s always important to be together at your communities Pride festival/parade, but it is also important for every city to host their own Trans Pride. This is a great space to educate, share and experience everything Transgender, with zero distractions. The transgender community face many difficult situations and challenges, give them the time and space to share with the entire community to understand the good and the bad.

Working with your CVB/Tourism Office to Create A Successful Strategic Partnership (Athena)

Presented by Jim McMichael, Las Vegas Convention & Visitors Authority. This session presents reasons you should meet with your local Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) about your Pride festival, ways they can assist you and how to build a unique partnership to help promote your event and increase attendance. Presented by the Las Vegas Convention & Visitors Authority.

WORKSHOP SESSION 4 (2:20 PM) Combating Microaggressions (Zeus B)

Presented by Richard Brethour-Bell We will discuss in a power point presentation what microaggressions are; how they differ from overt racism, and what members of CAPI and the LGBTQ+ community can do to recognize these tendencies within ourselves, and how we can make the needed adjustments to avoid this toxic behavior.

Presented by Jamie Lee Sprague-Ballou, Las Vegas Trans Pride Jamie will review the importance of including your local transgender community with your Pride Festival and Parade. Clever and unique ways you can make them feel welcomed and included as part of the family. Understand their needs, knowing their challenges is half of the battle. Building unity is key.

Entertainment Roundtable (Athena)

Presented by Gardenia Partridge & Fernando Lopez Balancing the demand for bigger and better entertainment while putting on major events that are cost accessible to the LGBTQ community within a limited budget is no easy task. Join San Diego Pride’s Entertainment Director and Executive Director for a facilitated group dialog about the issues, challenges, and learned best practices we’ve collectively come across with entertainment bookings.

Presented by Bob Leyh Volunteers are the power and reason for successful Pride organizations. Learn how to build a robust volunteer-led Pride organization. Hear about volunteer organizational structure, training, SOPS, and feedback strategies that can help you empower others and lift your organization. Join San Diego Pride’s Executive Director and Programs Manager who have both been instrumental in the growth and success of San Diego Pride as they provide insight and resources to help you take your volunteer program to the next level.

WORKSHOP SESSION 7 (11:30 AM) Family Unfriendly - Bringing Sexy Back (Zeus B)

Presented by Steven / Carnal_Knowledge Want to add an adult-only area to your PRIDE Festival? Attendees might love it. But they might hate it and provide some push-back, like answering the ever-present questions, “Shouldn’t PRIDE be family friendly?” and “Does BDSM even fall under the PRIDE umbrella?” This presentation covers the social good of a kink/fetish area and delves into details of putting one together. Everyone will leave knowing what resources are available when starting from scratch.

Presented by Freddy Lopez The foundation of financial well-being is the creation of a monthly budget. This presentation goes into detail around the information they’ll need to create a budget, and provides guidance on allocating dollars among operating, wants, and debt expenditures. Income, expenses, savings and operational priorities are all highlighted, and tips are offered to help keep a budget on track and upto-date.

Pride 365 (Athena)

Presented by Fernando Lopez As Pride organizations and organizers, we are all connected to a vast LGBTQ network within our respective communities. Why limit that mobilization to once a year? Email lists, volunteers, partner organizations, social media followers, and more can all help you build up the power of your regional LGBTQ community. Join San Diego Pride’s Executive Director, and the team to learn about ways in which that have succeeded at building out a Pride 365 model, and the challenges they faced along the way. San Diego Pride will provide insight and materials for taking these concepts back home for you to work within your own boards and communities as well as leaving time during the workshop to brainstorm ideas as a group.



WORKSHOP SESSION 8 (1:20 PM) True Inclusion (Zeus B)

Presented by Steven / Carnal_Knowledge Ever get attacked for not having a diverse Board? Are the cis-gay men over represented in leadership? Don’t wait for someone else to change that. Start that change today with a conversation about True Inclusion led by Steven. Steven is someone who is spread too thin, devotes WAY more time to PRIDE than reasonable, doesn’t get paid, and feels like no good deed goes unpunished. He uses True Inclusion to alleviate the workload, not add to it.

What About the “B” (Zeus C)

Presented by Steve Mitchell- Las Vegas Pride Most bisexuals remain closeted. In this workshop we will cover misconceptions, definitions of bi+ identities, resources and ways to encourage and engage your bisexual community. There will be also be a Q&A and open discussion.

It’s All About the Contract (Athena)

Presented by Ernie Yuen, Las Vegas PRIDE Executive Director, CAPI President Many organizations over look having a contract, an agreement. A verbal agreement, a handshake will not help your organization if something goes wrong. People shy away from contracts because they fear it involves lawyers and money. That’s not always the case. It can be a simple agreement signed by everyone involved. You should have a contract with every person you do business with. It’s all about the contract

WORKSHOP SESSION 9 (2:15 PM) General Sales and Marketing Psychology (Zeus B)

Presented by JC Lopez This workshop will cover the general mentality of sales vs promotion; 5 steps to a conversation; building relationships in business and importance of it; closing a sale and building return business.

Out with your Bisexual Identity (Zeus C)

Presented by Steve Mitchell, Las Vegas PRIDE Many, if not most, bisexuals are still closeted even in the LGBT community. This is a discussion about why many are not out as well as the power of storytelling. Part discussion and part participation, this is an opportunity for you to craft your story and tell it.

Marketing Beyond LGBT (Athena)

Presented by Andrew Childers Round table- Marketing for your LGBT organization should go far beyond our own community. Come learn some strategies to improve your marketing efforts, from the very foundations of your marketing campaigns and their delivery channels to identifying your intended & extended audiences.

Presented by JC Lopez This workshop will cover: 8 steps to success; How to mentally prepare for success; What habits make a successful leader and how to stand out in business; How to inspire people: stories.

Fundraising and Non-Profit Finance (Zeus C)

Presented by Freddy Lopez This workshop will work some of the most common questions that arise when considering fundraising for non-profit organizations. Furthermore, learn the ins and outs of maintaining financial control of your organizations fundraising efforts and the impact they have on organizational operations and reach. Lastly, learn about other opportunities, such as grants and gifts to help with your fundraising efforts.



SPEAKERS & PRESENTERS Manager. He currently oversees Pride’s largest programs; the volunteer-led Parade, Festival, civic engagement, and community outreach programs. Robert has been involved with Front Runners and Walkers, an LGBT running club; Special Delivery, a meal-delivery service for people debilitated by AIDS; Scouting for All; and AIDS Walk San Diego. He is also the former vice president of San Diego Democrats for Equality. Mr. Leyh has dedicated his life to LGBTQ community service and philanthropy; a passion he helps to instill in others in San Diego’s LGBTQ community.

CHAD BALLARD CASSWOOD INSURANCE AGENCY

Chad Ballard is a graduate of Texas A&M University, has twenty-three years in the insurance industry, been involved with Pride organizations since 2000 and is Vice President of Casswood Insurance Agency. In 2002 Chad attended his first InterPride Conference in San Francisco, became affiliated with Casswood and in 2005 joined their California office. He became involved with the Desert Business Association, served as President 2011-2013 and was named Business Person of the Year in 2015. Employed by the largest gay-owned and operated insurance agency in BOB LEYH the United States - Casswood has PROGRAMS MANAGER, SAN DIEGO PRIDE been insuring Prides for over 30 years, insure 90% of the Prides in the U.S., and Bob Leyh is a veteran of the U.S. Navy have been administering the InterPride and San Diego Pride’s Programs Insurance Program since 1994. Chad

Ernie, or as his friends call him “Pineapple,” was recruited by Steve and Elaine Wynn as a Design Engineer for the world-famous Bellagio Hotel & Casino Conservatory. A 15-year member of Las Vegas PRIDE, Ernie joined the board when the organization was about to file for bankruptcy and was 60K plus in the red. He and 20 new fellow board members were given the task to turn the organization around. Fast forward 10 months later and all debts were paid and the organization had a 78K reserve at the end of their celebration. Being a volunteer was in Ernie blood sitting on the multi-board in Hawaii, Aloha Week Festival, Floating Lantern Festival, Gay and Lesbian Hawaii Film Festival, Hawaii LGBT Center, Honolulu Gay Men’s Chorus, helping his community was a perfect fit. Chairing every committee on the Las Vegas PRIDE Board, serving every Executive position Ernie was promoted to Executive Director in 2014, same year Las Vegas PRIDE published their NonProfit- Las Vegas Magazine- Ernie was assigned the task of Publisher for the


Diego Pride and has been integral to the success of San Diego Pride for over 7 years. She honors the values of diversity, inclusion, and equality by booking a diverse representation of LGBTQIA artists and allies who use their public life to advocate for the LGBTQ community and highlighting inclusive entertainment for all Pride events. She maintains a volunteer spirit by donating her time and talent to other Pride organizations in cities such as Palm Springs, Cathedral City, and more.

Magazine. Ernie currently is serving his first term as President of CAPI and has chaired/ hosted 4 CAPI AGMs and 1 InterPride AGM here in Las Vegas. Ernie would like to welcome all of you to Las Vegas and CAPI!

JAMIE LEE SPRAGUE-BALLOU FREDDY LOPEZ MASS MUTUAL LAS VEGAS PRIDE ASSOCIATE BOARD MEMBER

FERNANDO LOPEZ SAN DIEGO PRIDE Executive Director for San Diego Pride, Fernando Z. Lopez, moved to San Diego in 1999 as a homeless youth and has since become a prominent LGBTQ community leader. In his time with San Diego Pride, Fernando oversaw the creation and growth of several programs fostering leadership skill development in LGBTQ young people, expanded LGBT voter outreach, and increased San Diego Pride’s international relations work. He has developed partnerships with several major athletic organizations to combat homophobia in sports, and has worked with law enforcement, first responders, and the armed services to increase LGBTQ sensitivity and compassion through trainings and policy reform.

Freddy Lopez is a Las Vegas local and MassMutual Representative with over 15 years of experience in the finance and banking industry. Born and raised in Las Vegas, Freddy is a graduate of the University of Nevada Las Vegas, Lee Business School, with a degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Risk Management and Investments. From financial literacy and savings, to insurance and investments, he has combined his professional knowledge and experience with his LAS VEGAS TRANS PRIDE personal desire and drive toward volunteerism and nonprofit work in The Reverend Jamie Lee Sprague-Ballou is a 56-year-old Trans activist, in Las order to give back to his community. Vegas. She has been a resident of Las Vegas since 1995 and has been hosting the Transgender Day of Remembrance since 2006. She is the founder and lead organizer of Las Vegas Trans Pride, and with the help of her husband, David Ballou has opened Transcending the Gender Box which is a drop-in-center that is geared for the Trans expansive community and is opened to everyone “regardless who you are or where you are on life’s journey. “ She is a graduate of San Francisco Theological Seminary earning her Master of Divinity on May 20th, 2017, which made her the first Transgender graduate of San Francisco Theological Seminary. She was ordained the following weekend on GARDENIA PARTRIDGE Saturday, May 27, 2017, by the United SAN DIEGO PRIDE Church of Christ, which made her the first Trans Female to be ordained by the Gardenia Partridge oversees the United Church of Christ. She is currently entertainment department at San the pastor of Mary Magdalene Friends


United Church of Christ, and she is currently enrolled in the Bachelor of Arts in Spanish program at UNLV.

JIM MCMICHAEL JORGE SOLORIO LAS VEGAS CONVENTION & VISITORS AUTHORITY VICE PRESIDENT, LAS VEGAS PRIDE REGIONAL DIRECTOR, INTERPRIDE JEAN CARLOS LOPES LAS VEGAS PRIDE Jean Carlos Lopez was born and raised in Southern California. He went to UC Riverside where Got a Degree in Political Science. He also had the opportunity to study abroad in Canterbury, England where He went to the University of Kent for two years to study Politics and Theatre. He’s been through every industry, from being a co-Manager in retail, bartending, club promoting, running a music studio, running a theatre company, to performing professionally with both with choirs and solo. He was a jack of all trades, master of none. He joined this industry of Marketing and Management training because he was able to focus on one thing, helping people. When he started his business, it helped him understand that unless we invest all of our time and energy into one thing at a time, we don’t see maximized success. That is what his business is all about, people. His ultimate goal is to help people change their lives and being a part of their growth is his mission and purpose in life. He has helped expand multiple businesses and is expanding his own business twice in the next 12 months.

Jim McMichael is currently the Specialty Markets Manager with the LVCVA (Las Vegas Convention & Visitor Authority) handling the LGBT market, international MICE groups from Brazil and Mexico as well as cultural tourism programming. Previous to joining the LVCVA, Mr. McMichael spent 18 years in the shopping center industry with The Rouse Company and General Growth Properties in various marketing positions in South Florida and Las Vegas. A graduate of the University of Georgia, Mr. McMichael serves on the Board for the IGLTA Foundation, the Academy of Hospitality & Tourism at Valley High School and works with various community groups throughout the Las Vegas Valley including Las Vegas Pride and the Nevada Gay Rodeo Association.

Jorge Solorio is proud to have been a very active Board member with Las Vegas PRIDE and has donated countless hours to the LGBT community. He feels a great sense of accomplishment, personal growth, and community pride. To show his commitment and dedication to this organization, Jorge has helped represent Las Vegas PRIDE in many other cities’ PRIDE festivals, CAPI, and InterPride; even becoming a Regional Director. His actions within the PRIDE movement shows that he is dedicated to representing the LGBT community in a positive light all over the world.

PAUL HUDDLESTON SECRETARY, CAPI Paul Huddleston was the President of Austin PRIDE from 2011-2018 and was


elected to the CAPI Board of Directors in Equal, member of the Out & Equal 2018 to serve the remaining 1-year term Bisexual Advisory Committee. of the Secretary position. He currently resides in Palm Springs, California.

RICHARD BRETHOUR-BELL VICE PRESIDENT, CAPI Richard Brethour-Bell is the former president of Santa Fe Pride and the current CAPI Vice President of Member Services. He’s a graduate of the University of New Mexico (UNM), and currently is completing a Masters in Health Administration from the UNM’s School of Public Administration. Richard has given workshops on racism, misogyny and misandry, and conflict resolution.

He is an Associate Board member for Las Vegas PRIDE and runs the Proudly Inappropriate Adult Playspace at the Las Vegas PRIDE Festival. Steven frequently presents on BDSM and inclusion.
