Medical students have been confined to the predictable cycle of lectures, clinics, and libraries for so long. The routine is changing, and more frontiers are being explored by some medical students. The increasing number of medical students leading different frontiers both in medicine and outside medicine has resulted from intentional growth and capacity building across various colleges. The Lagos State University College of Medicine, known to be one of the fastgrowing medical colleges in Nigeria, has constantly churned out exceptional individuals with excellent academic records who have continued to shine in their chosen fields within healthcare and beyond.
In LASUCOM, many students have grown out of this predictable routine, in addition to outstanding academic records. They have begun to engage in other interests and get recognized in those fields even as students. These excellent students make incredible waves in Social Impact, Research, Art, Technology, Finance and many more. These individuals have managed to distinguish themselves, reshape their minds, successfully manage their limited time, build leadership skills and experience over time and have gone on to make unconcealable impacts.
For these individuals who have gone out of the demanding medical school to create exciting niches in other areas, It is my joy to celebrate these fantastic persons in the LASUCOM Outliers. These folks do not hav superpowers but have unlocked some locks; discipline, SMART goals, consistency, time management and the ability to prioritize without hurting their medical journey. It is also an opportunity to send a message to every other person who might be inspired by the achievements of these individuals, a motivation and inspiration that they can also explore their interests as students and build relevance in such appeals.
The LASUCOM Outliers is a publication of the LASUMSA Secretariat to celebrate all our high-flying medical students raising the bar daily and inspiring generations of medical students across the globe. As we boast of several incredible young high-achieving medical students and alumni, this list is not definitive, as many more achievers could not be captured in this year's release. This is the tip of the iceberg of talented students making a difference in various spaces across Nigeria and the globe. As an association, we continually push our members to be the best in academics and non-academic activities. We always stand with the cliché, you can be anything and everything you want to be.

Aisha Bada was a medical student and photojournalist with a basic medical sciences background at the Lagos State University College of Medicine, Nigeria. She was a recipient of personal mentorships from world-renowned photographers in various genres of photography; Jide Alakija, Andrew Esiebo, Ed Kashi, Kristi Odom, Aisha AugieKuta and Sodiq Adelakun.
Her first encounter with journalism was at age 13 when her father enrolled her in training after he noticed her interest in storytelling. During her first year in medical school, she got involved in photography to tell stories. She said, “My interest in medical stories grew when I lost my grandfather, who inspired me to study medicine. He told me he was misdiagnosed to have had cataracts when he had glaucoma. This story piqued my interest in medical stories. I owe it to myself to do more research on similar medical stories, document them in photographs to further communicate visually with other people.”
Aisha was a certified participant in Canon Storytelling Masterclass 2019. She also participated in an international group exhibition during the month of the photography festival with other Indigenous Photo members at Daniels and Fischer Clock Tower in Denver, Colorado. She had interviews with Radio Now 95.3FM, Wellcome Photo Prize, No Wahala Mag and got spotlighted on The Guardian Newspaper.
She had a central medical story idea during the #EndSars protest in 2020 to capture a series on “Protest during a pandemic” but couldn’t find images. This became an eyeopener for her in the field of medical photojournalism. Subsequently, she worked on a project called “Lost Yet Again”, which delved into the daily activities of medical practitioners working on the frontline in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. This was featured in World Press Photo as a Black Woman Photographer.
“As a Nigerian, I have spent 95% of my days living, working and schooling in Lagos. Lagos state has been my centre of growth. I create my work in and around the hospital, in other people`s spaces that are subjects for medical stories, and in public spaces challenged by physical, biological or social factors. I am driven by my subject`s feeling of not being heard because of factors that society inflicts on people with health problems. This is why I create still images, to give people a voice so they can breathe.” she narrated, sharing an insight into her life.
Aisha, a very energetic and passion-driven woman known for her academic brilliance and international recognition in medical photojournalism, maintained positive relationships with her friends and colleagues in the college of medicine and beyond. Aisha left a great legacy; her memories live in everyone’s hearts.
