FOSTERING BROWARD’S CULTURE OF PHILANTHROPY

LAS OLAS BOULEVARD & ISLES CHARITY GUIDE

The Community Foundation of Broward champions local philanthropy to transform and uplift the community we love. We help philanthropists be more strategic and impactful with their giving. We provide community leadership to forge collaborations that tackle pressing local needs. And we build permanent, endowed resources to support the community we love forever.

It all starts with the visionary individuals, families and organizations who partner with us to create personalized charitable funds that fuel ongoing support for causes that mean the most to them. We safeguard their funds and help them grow through careful investment. We identify innovative, dynamic grantmaking opportunities to support our “fundholders’” charitable passions. Through the years, we make sure their charitable dollars are always used as intended.

Our ability to pool resources and forge community collaborations amplifies our fundholders’ charitable impact. Through the power of endowment, we build permanent, sustainable sources of support to tackle our fast-growing community’s needs – today and for years to come.

Today, we safeguard 571 charitable funds, representing more than $325 million in assets and we have distributed more than $200 million in grants since our founding in 1984. Through the years, the Community Foundation has led the way in support for education, the arts, economic mobility, social justice, the environment, seniors in need and so much more.

MAYORS FORUM: Community Foundation Board Chair Mona Pittenger, Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis and Community Foundation President/CEO Jennifer O’Flannery Anderson attend the Foundation’s “Mayors Philanthropic Forum.”

Thanks to our fundholders and the power of endowment, the Community Foundation will always be here to connect people who care to causes that matter. Together, we shape a brighter future for Broward.

WHAT IS A COMMUNITY FOUNDATION?

More than two decades ago, the Community Foundation of Broward became the first community foundation in Florida to earn accreditation by the National Standards for U.S. Community Foundations.

The Community Foundation of Broward is one of about 900 community foundations across the country. These organizations are grantmaking public charities that provide support to nonprofits that improve the lives of people who live in the areas they serve. They are driven by the simple idea that by teaming up, local philanthropists can do more for the communities they love than by going it alone.

Community foundations bring together support from individuals, families and local organizations to address immediate and long-term community needs. Donors partner with community foundations to enlist their unmatched local knowledge and philanthropic expertise. Community foundations connect their donors to innovative, impactful opportunities for their charitable support to make a lasting difference.

While most charitable organizations focus on a single issue, community foundations take a more holistic, long-term approach by providing support for many different charitable interests that touch lives throughout the communities they serve. Each year, community foundations across the country provide more than $14 billion in grants that help families in need, support education, invest in the arts, fuel innovation, boost health care, champion the environment and do more to touch lives in their communities. Individuals can create an endowed charitable fund at the Community Foundation to ensure permanent, sustainable support for charitable causes and organizations that matter to them. It’s an opportunity for them to establish a legacy of enduring impact.

“LOVE MURALS” INSPIRE AND UNIFY BROWARD

“Lead with Love” mural, at the Dania Beach Marina. It is the third of nine “Love”-themed murals planned for cities across Broward County.

New murals are spreading the “LOVE,” thanks to an exciting collaboration to foster inspiration, unity and leadership throughout Broward County.

The Community Foundation of Broward and Business for the Arts Broward are partnering with renowned artist Cey Adams for the “Lead with Love” mural project. This transformative public art initiative, running through 2027, will create nine “Love”-themed murals in communities across Broward.

The first artwork in the mural project, the “LOVE Las Olas” mural, is located on the western exterior wall of Hoffman’s Chocolates at 601 E. Las Olas Blvd. The second mural, called “One Love Plantation” is a colorful mural covering a wall that stretches along Kingsley Park in Plantation. The newest mural, in Dania Beach, features a swirl of colors as well as the city’s motto, “Sea it. Live it. Love it.”

The “Lead with Love” murals foster unity and pride by creating art that reflects local identity and spirit. The murals are lasting symbols of love and cultural diversity, contributing to the artistic landscape of Broward County and fostering a deeper appreciation for art and community collaboration.

“This transformational project aims to inspire a movement in Broward to do what is right: to support others, to be kind, to share, to be patient, to demonstrate compassion, to listen, to learn, and to LOVE each other and our community.”

– Community Foundation President/CEO Jennifer O’Flannery Anderson, Ph.D.

MAXIMIZING YOUR YEAR-END GIVING

Love drives our work at the Community Foundation of Broward. Love for the people who make this vibrant community so special. Love for the beautiful place we call home. Love for local philanthropy that makes life even better in Broward.

LAS OLAS BOULEVARD & ISLES CHARITY GUIDE

That’s why we chose “Lead with Love” for the Community Foundation’s new motto. We partner with philanthropists who show their love for Broward by giving back to the community they treasure.

With the end of the year fast approaching, the Community Foundation is ready to help you maximize the impact – and the tax benefits – of your charitable giving. We can help you find innovative ways to accomplish your charitable passions. Together, we can “Lead with Love.”

Five asset options to keep in mind for year-end giving:

GIVE STOCK OR REAL ESTATE:

If you own “highly appreciated assets,” such as stock or real estate, and are also planning to make a year-end donation, consider giving the appreciated assets to your favorite nonprofit. Assets like appreciated stock can be sold by a charity for 100 cents on the dollar – no capital gains tax applies. That means your favorite charitable causes end up with more money to work with than if you had sold that same asset yourself and donated the proceeds.

IRA DISTRIBUTION:

Making a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) from your IRA is an easy way to donate to a charitable organization. A QCD can reduce your taxable income and satisfy your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD).

GIFT BUNDLING:

You can “bundle” several years’ worth of support for your favorite causes or organizations through a single, year-end gift to a donor-advised fund. Gift bundling through a donor-advised fund enables you to lock in support to achieve your long-term charitable goals, while you get the full tax benefit this year.

DONATE COMPLEX GIFTS:

Don’t be afraid to think outside the box. “Closely-held stock,” real estate and valuable collections can be excellent gifts to fuel your charitable support. Check with your favorite nonprofit to see if they are able to work with you and your professional advisor to facilitate a gift of a “complex” asset.

GIFT PLANNING:

If now isn’t the best time to donate, you can name a nonprofit organization as one of the beneficiaries in your will. For example, when you commit to a bequest to the Community Foundation your future gift will create an endowed charitable fund that provides sustainable, permanent support for causes that mean the most to you.

Donors are encouraged to contact their professional advisor or the team at the Community Foundation to discuss giving strategies that work best. cfbroward.org

Every heartbeat, every smile, every tomorrow is made possible because of you.

At Memorial Healthcare System and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, lives are saved every day — but it’s only possible through the generosity of our community.

Your gift helps bring hope within reach: advanced medical technology, comforting care, and healing spaces where families can feel safe and supported. For over 70 years, we’ve stood by every patient with one mission: heal the body, mind, and spirit of those we touch.

When you give, you’re helping a child laugh again. You’re easing a parent’s worry. You’re giving someone the chance to look forward to tomorrow.

Lesley Mitchell Jones: Empowering Children and Seniors

LAS OLAS BOULEVARD & ISLES

Guided by faith and determined to make a difference, Lesley Mitchell Jones gives back to lift up children and seniors in need.

Guided by faith and determined to make a difference, Lesley Mitchell Jones gives back to lift up children and seniors in need.

Lesley grew up in Connecticut as the oldest of three children. Her mother, Anne, nurtured Lesley’s Catholic faith and set a trailblazing example as CFO of a local business. While building a successful career of her own as a partner at a Wall Street firm, Lesley held fast to the lessons of hard work and compassion she learned at home.

Through the years, Lesley has prioritized donating her time and financial support to helping others. Lesley’s deep involvement with Kids in Distress, Inc. spans 25 years. She served as Board Chair and Board Member and made a gift to fund the campus Education and Recreation Center. Lesley also became a foster mother and an adoptive parent through the program. United Way, Healthy Start and the I Have a Dream Foundation are among the other organizations where Lesley has gotten involved to help struggling children. Never forgetting her roots, Lesley created a job readiness center and placement program for high school students at her alma mater, the Norwich Free Academy, in honor of her mother.

Today, Lesley partners with the Community Foundation of Broward to be more strategic with her giving and to ensure her impact never ends. She established three endowed charitable funds at the Community Foundation: one dedicated to supporting organizations she cares about deeply, one to tackle pressing community challenges as they emerge and another to provide support for seniors in need. Enlisting the Community Foundation gives Lesley peace of mind knowing its expert team will shepherd and grow her funds through the years, so grantmaking in her name continues for generations to come.

Albert and Beatriz Miniaci: Opening Doors to Brighter Futures

Albert and Beatriz Miniaci share a passion for giving back and getting involved to support the community they love.

Albert and Beatriz Miniaci share a passion for giving back and getting involved to support the community they love.

Albert, originally from New York, and Beatriz, from Chile, made their life together in Broward, where they raised their children, Alan and Maria. As Albert’s entrepreneurial success grew – from real estate to vending machines and more – he and Beatriz prioritized local philanthropy that empowers others to achieve their full potential. They have long focused their support on smaller organizations that work with underserved populations and people with disabilities. Albert championed this work during his time as a Community Foundation of Broward Board Member.

Many nonprofit organizations have benefited from Albert and Beatriz volunteering their leadership and philanthropic support, including: Arc Broward, Broward Center for the Performing Arts, Hispanic Unity of Florida, HANDY, Slow Burn Theatre Company, Catholic and Jewish Hospice, Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County, FLITE Center, Frank Sinatra School of the Arts High School – Queens, NY, Ann Stork Center, Goodman Jewish Family Services of Broward County, Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival, Junior Achievement of South Florida, Children’s Diagnostic and Treatment Center, Broward Health, and Nova Southeastern University.

To ensure their local impact never ends, Albert and Beatriz partnered with the Community Foundation to create an endowed charitable fund that locks in sustainable, permanent support for nonprofits and causes that matter to them.

With their endowed fund, Albert and Beatriz are carrying on a family tradition of local philanthropy. Nearly two decades ago, Albert’s mother, Rose, created an endowed charitable fund at the Community Foundation. Like Rose, Albert and Beatriz’s commitment to endowed giving ensures that their support will always be there to make life better in Broward.

Francie Bishop Good and David Horvitz: Enduring Support for the Arts

For Francie and David, support for the arts is their way to say “thank you” to a community that has given them so much.

Francie Bishop Good and David Horvitz know the arts are key to a thriving and vibrant community. They share a common belief that art and culture in contemporary society help transcend differences and bring us closer together in celebration of the human spirit.

As government support for the arts vanished and arts organizations in Broward County suffered, they felt compelled to do something. That’s why they created an endowed charitable fund at the Community Foundation of Broward to help preserve what has been built and to continue to propel the arts forward in Broward, for generations to come. David is a Community Foundation Board Member and Francie is a former Board Member. They have both helped guide Community Foundation grantmaking that champions the arts in Broward. Through their leadership and endowed support, David and Francie serve as examples to others who want to create a brighter future for Broward.

The Hollywood Art and Culture Center, NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale, the Art Prevails Project, South Florida Symphony Orchestra and Funding Arts Broward are among the many dynamic local arts organizations that David and Francie support with their charitable giving. In addition to their dedicated support for the arts, David and Francie’s local philanthropy helps feed people in need, improve access to care for cancer patients, champion student achievement, find homes for abandoned pets and much more.

Francie, a professional artist, and David, Chair and CEO of SouthOcean Capital Partners investment firm, raised four children and built their lives in Broward. They love this community and they’re determined to see it thrive. For Francie and David, support for the arts is their way to say, “thank you,” to a community that has given them so much.

Cathy and James Donnelly are high school sweethearts who met in Canada and have forged a life together in Fort Lauderdale based on family, hard work, and giving back to the community they call home.

A real estate business venture brought Cathy, James and their three young sons to Florida in 1996. They made Broward their home after falling in love with the weather, vibrant region, and family friendly neighborhoods. They founded and grew the Castle Group – a premier community association property management company - to more than 3,000 employees. They now own and operate Crown Residential, a Fort Lauderdale based multi-family management company.

To say “thank you” to the community that embraced them, Cathy and James work with nonprofit, business, and community partners to enhance the lives of Broward’s most vulnerable residents. In addition, James has founded and endowed the Donnelly Real Estate and Property Management Program at NSU.

Collaborating with the Community Foundation of Broward provides Cathy and James a team of philanthropic experts to help them navigate their personal giving – ensuring their generosity fuels solutions where needed the most. James saw firsthand how the Community Foundation partners with philanthropists to transform and uplift Broward when he served as Board Chair. Now the Community Foundation amplifies Cathy and James’ impact by pooling their resources with other like-minded philanthropists. By creating an endowed charitable fund at the Foundation, Cathy and James have ensured a sustainable, permanent source of support for the causes and organizations that matter most to them.

Year after year, grants from their endowed fund help tackle food insecurity, mental health and much more. Cathy and James have peace of mind knowing the Community Foundation’s stewardship of their endowed fund ensures their support will shape and improve the community they love, for generations to come.

A Lasting Gift for Broward Health: The Hallers’ Vision for Community Care

“It’s important to be engaged in the lives of the people right here in your community. Our foundation hopes to affect change through our philanthropy that will have a lasting impact and help many others.”
— Linda Haller

Philanthropy can often be reduced to numbers, but for Linda Haller and the Henry E. Haller Jr. Foundation, giving has always meant more than writing a check. With a deep commitment to service and community, Linda and her family foundation have made a transformative $5.2 million gift to Broward Health – a contribution that underscores both the Foundation’s philosophy and its devotion to South Florida.

The donation, announced at the 12th Annual Broward Health Ball, will fund the creation of two state-of-the-art labs at Broward Health Medical Center in downtown Fort Lauderdale. These labs, equipped with Siemens Artis Icono systems, will expand the hospital’s ability to perform advanced cardiac catheterization and electrophysiology procedures. “These labs will help us meet the growing needs of our community by expanding our capacity to treat cardiac patients, whether they come to us for scheduled or emergency care,” said Jenna Merlucci, vice president of heart and vascular services.

This investment reflects a guiding principle of the foundation: “We believe in leaving a legacy,” Haller said. “Always remember what you leave behind is not what’s engraved in stone monuments but what’s woven into the lives of others. Leave your community better than you found it.”

That philosophy shapes every decision the Haller Foundation makes. Since its founding in 2000, the family-run foundation has supported a variety of initiatives in education, the arts, libraries, and healthcare, while also launching Friends of Broward, a program that helps families navigate the hospital system with personalized guidance.

The new cardiac labs at Broward Health will do just that. By enhancing access to lifesaving treatments and advanced imaging, they promise to improve outcomes for countless patients and families. As Broward Health CEO Shane Strum noted, “The Haller Foundation’s investment is nothing short of inspiring.”

Trevor and Margie Fried: Legacy of Love, Compassion, and Empathy

Trevor and Margie Fried’s ongoing community support creates a legacy of love, compassion and empathy that will make a bold difference for generations to come.

Trevor and Margie Fried’s love for their community runs deep, passed down from generations before them. It’s a love rooted in acts of kindness, compassion and empathy, which they have also instilled in their daughter, Leila. For them, true success isn’t measured in wealth, but in the impact they make on their community.

Trevor’s commitment to tzedakah – a Hebrew word that means doing what is right and giving to those in need – has been a guiding principle throughout his life, which aligns with many of Margie and Trevor’s commitments to the community.

Margie’s work as an elementary school teacher and Trevor’s career as a financial advisor have always been driven by a desire to help others. They believe they have a responsibility to listen, to act when they see injustice, and to be an ally when someone needs help. For the Fried family, it’s more than just giving back. It’s about making a difference in the lives of those around them.

For 20 years, they’ve volunteered locally, serving on philanthropic boards for organizations that support those in need. From Gilda’s Club to Lambda Legal to Honor Flight South Florida, they’ve always been there to lend a hand. Trevor is a Community Foundation of Broward Board Member who also serves on the Foundation’s Professional Advisors Council. Their daughter, Leila, has followed her parents’ lead, dedicating many hundreds of hours over the past several years to organizations such as HandsOn Broward and Joe DiMaggio’s Children’s Hospital.

By creating an endowed charitable fund at the Community Foundation, the Fried family provides sustainable, permanent support for those impacted by injustice and intolerance, and to those in need. The Foundation helps the Fried family identify innovative ways to fulfill their charitable goals. Their ongoing community support creates a legacy of love, compassion, and empathy that will make a bold difference for generations to come.
