Spark a lifelong love of learning in your students as they explore a mummified person’s tomb, encounter a 65-million-year-old Triceratops skull, and journey through the cosmos in the Irene W. Pennington Planetarium – all under one roof in downtown Baton Rouge.

LASM’s structured school group programs make your field trip experience meaningful and relevant. Programs are designed to exceed your educational expectations, address curriculum requirements, and foster lifelong exploration. Our team is always happy to recommend an itinerary of programs based on your students’ grade level, subject matter, and interests. We suggest selecting programs based on a specific theme, such as Ancient Egypt, Engineering, Astronomy, or Geology.

Ancient Egypt Experiences

We offer many engaging educational programs related to Ancient Egypt, including a Guided Tour of the NEW exhibition Discoveries on the Nile: Exploring King Tut’s Tomb and the Amin Egyptian Collection. These experiences are especially relevant to the Louisiana State Standards for Social Studies for 4th grade. Tours can be adapted for 1st through 12th grade students. ANCIENT EGYPT-RELATED

King Tut Exhibition Guided Tour

OCTOBER 16, 2024 – S EPTEMBER 7, 2025

RECOMMENDED GRADES: 3RD - 12TH

Length: 30 minutes | Cost: $2 per student & parent/chaperone

Experience an exciting reconstruction of one of the most important revelations in the history of archeology: King Tutankhamun’s tomb, which Howard Carter rediscovered almost fully intact in 1922.

Your students will learn about ancient Egyptian customs and explore certified Egyptian replicas of the opulent artifacts found in King Tut’s tomb, which was the first known, mostly undisturbed ancient Egyptian royal burial site.

Ancient Egypt Gallery Guided Tour

RECOMMENDED GRADES: 3RD - 12TH

Length: 30 minutes | Cost: $2 per student & parent/chaperone

Enter a recreated tomb that houses an authentic, 2,300-year-old mummified person, and learn how modern technology revealed some of his secrets.

Your students will learn about the ancient Egyptians’ civilization, beliefs, and customs, and how these people interacted with their Greek and Roman neighbors during the Ptolemaic period (323-30 BC). Your students will also view authentic masks worn by mummified people and learn about ancient Egyptian funerary customs.

Discover the mysterious world of the pharaohs with scientists who have pieced together archeological and genetic clues through their study of ancient Egyptian mummified people. Learn about one of the greatest excavations in modern archaeology, which uncovered 40 mummies including pharaoh Rameses the Great.

The Museum Store offers unique and reasonably-priced items starting at under $1. Many items relate to ancient Egypt. Your students will have the opportunity to practice skills they study in school with help from museum store staff.

How to Book Your Field Trip

Review this Adventure Planner to learn about LASM’s school group programs.

Select your desired programs. We are happy to walk you through this process and recommend an itinerary of programs for your students based on their grade level, subject matter, and relevant curriculum standards.

Submit your desired programs by one of the following methods:

Complete your reservation form online by scanning the QR code or visiting lasm.org/educators

You will receive a reservation confirmation packet shortly after submitting your reservation request.

Carefully review your packet, which will include:

• Field trip date & time

• Field trip itinerary (subject to change)

• Cost per person

Note the policies and procedures regarding cancellations in your packet.

Let our team know if anything needs to be changed. If so, we will send you a revised confirmation packet.

Preparing for Your Field Trip

One week prior to your visit:

• Submit an accurate number of parents/chaperones who will be attending the field trip so we can determine your group’s final total price.

• Share the downtown parking information with bus drivers and parents/chaperones. You will be emailed a document to share one week prior to your visit.

• Share the LASM Chaperone Information Sheet with parents/chaperones. You will be emailed a document to share prior to your visit.

Payment: Include all student fees in your final payment, which must be made on or before the day of your visit.

• You may pay by check, cash, or card. Checks must be made out to “Louisiana Art & Science Museum.”

• If fewer students and/or parents/chaperones attend the field trip than originally booked/paid for, a refund check will be mailed to your school minus a $15 processing fee.

• Parents/chaperones may pay separately at the front desk or be included in the payment from the school. Please note that planetarium seating is limited, and space may not be available for chaperones who pay individually. Paying separately from the school may take longer at check-in. Chaperones are encouraged to pay with the school if possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the museum plan my trip for me? Yes! The LASM Reservations Team will do all the work. Simply let us know which experiences you are interested in, and we will create a schedule for you and your students. We can also recommend an itinerary based on one of our focus areas (Egypt, Astronomy, Engineering, etc.).

Do educators/school staff pay? No! However, students and parents/chaperones pay the same per-head rate based on the programs you select.

Can we take photos? Yes! Flash photography may not be permitted in some galleries. Please share your experience with us by tagging LASM’s Facebook (Louisiana Art & Science Museum) and Instagram accounts (@lasmbr)!

When is the best time to book? Book as soon as possible, especially for the King Tut Guided Exhibition Tour! We recommend booking spring semester field trips during the fall semester if possible. April and May are our busiest months.

What do we do about lunch? You have the option to schedule a break in your visit for lunch on the reservation form. We have no dining facilities but will gladly store the picnic lunches that you provide for your students. Students can enjoy their lunches in a designated outdoor space or, in the case of inclement weather, inside the building.

RECOMMENDED GRADES: PRE-K – 2ND

This artful approach to science will inspire your young students to explore the amazing world of insects while learning about adaptations, physiology, and the role insects play in our daily lives. Colorful, take-home art projects creatively reinforce scientific concepts.

Intro to Bright Light

RECOMMENDED GRADES: 1ST - 3RD

How and why do rainbows appear in the sky? In this illuminating introduction to light and color, your students will make exciting discoveries as they explore the visible light spectrum and the behavior of light as it travels through various mediums.

The scientific concepts of refraction, diffraction, and reflection will come to life for your students through experimentation with light sources, diffraction glasses, and giant water prisms.

Bright Light

RECOMMENDED GRADES: 4TH - 6TH

How do astronomers discover the chemical composition of faraway stars and nebulae? In this hands-on experience, your students will observe gas tubes in a spectroscope to compare the unique spectral lines of common gases.

While also engaging with prisms and diffraction glasses, your students will investigate the properties of light related to the visible light spectrum. The scientific concepts of refraction, diffraction, and reflection are explored with engaging activities related to the electromagnetic spectrum through real-life applications.

Intro to Robot Design Challenge

RECOMMENDED GRADES: 2ND & 3RD

Your students will sharpen their critical thinking and problem-solving skills as they work collaboratively to build modular robots.

Participants will use the Science and Engineering Practices to develop inventions that sense, compute, and act upon the world around them. As a final activity, students will enjoy a fun and friendly robot race!

Robot Design Challenge

RECOMMENDED GRADES: 4TH - 8TH

Working collaboratively in teams, your students will use design thinking along with the Science and Engineering Practices to build modular robots that address realworld challenges.

With an emphasis on communication, cooperation, and problem solving, your aspiring engineers will design robots and build programs through hands-on coding. After testing and improving their robot creations, your students will participate in a group challenge to determine which robot is the most efficient!

The River Dynamics Experience

FREE PROGRAM FOR 4TH - 12TH GRADERS!

This exciting program includes a visit to the LSU Center for River Studies and same-day, hands-on classes and programs at LASM. All activities are aligned with the Louisiana Student Standards for Science.

• Tour of the LSU Center for River Studies

Students will explore a 3-dimensional model of the lower 190 miles of the Mississippi River, one of the most technologically advanced models in existence.

• Hands-On Stream Table at LASM

Your students will collaboratively design solutions to real-world environmental challenges by engaging with a state-of-the-art stream table.

• Educational Movie at LASM

Your students will view a related, large-screen educational movie at LASM.

This FREE, FULL-DAY learning opportunity is available to 4th through 12th-grade students on a first-come, first-served basis through LASM’s partnership with the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority (CPRA).

Gallery Guided Tours

Wow your students with unique object-based learning opportunities – such as experiencing an authentic mummified person and viewing a real Triceratops skull – that are only available at LASM. Tours are adapted based on grade levels.

Solar System Gallery Guided Tour

RECOMMENDED GRADES: PRE-K - 12TH

Investigate the history of our Solar System, from astronomy to geology and paleontology.

Your students will encounter interactive displays that allow them to learn about gravity, virtually travel to the moon, and more. An exhibit of rocks, minerals, and fossils, including a 65-million-year-old authentic Triceratops prorsus skull, will teach your students about our aging planet.

Dr. Decibel, the “LASM’s Super Sound Scientist,” leads students in an interactive exploration of the world of sound.

“Junior Sound Scientists” will become familiar with key vocabulary terms and concepts relating to sound, learn about the anatomy of the ear, and experiment with unique musical instruments from across the globe. This engaging program can easily be adapted for various grade levels.

Meet Little Star, an “average” yellow star in search of planets of his own to protect and warm. Along the way, you will find out how planets are formed; the difference between stars, planets, and moons; and learn about each planet with basic information about our Solar System.

Two Small Pieces of Glass: The Amazing Telescope

Middle School & High School

Trace the history of the telescope, starting with Galileo’s modifications, then to a child’s spyglass, and finally to the launch of NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope and the future of astronomy, with this show that explores the discoveries made by astronomers throughout the last 400 years.

We have no dining facilities but will gladly store the picnic lunches that you provide for your students. Students can enjoy their lunches in a designated outdoor space or, in the case of inclement weather, inside the building.

• Exit at North Street/Capitol Park (right-hand exit 1G or I-110).

• Follow service road and turn right at the second red light onto North Street. Proceed down North Street toward the river.

• Turn left onto River Road. Go 5 blocks. The museum is on the right across the street from the Old State Capitol.

FROM THE WEST/SOUTH:

• Take I-10 to I-110 (Business District).

• Exit at North Street (left-hand exit 1D or I-110).
