Letter from the Editor Welcome to Issue 29 of Lash Inc International!

There are so many options to explore!

We are hopeful it is going to be a busy Christmas for all of you.

News - We are excited to announce the Re-launch of Brow Inc, as Brows are booming, we feel there is now room to focus more on eyebrows. Look out for it in January 2022, further announcements coming soon.

With the world settling in to the new post-covid normal, the future for the Lash Industry and the wider beauty industry is again looking promising. There are some countries still on tighter restrictions such as un-vaccinated people can not get beauty services, therefore losing salons at least 20% of their previous business straight away. However, recovery is happening but it is not going to be as simple as opening up and getting back to business. It will be a slower process. What are your options?

The Lash Inc Team, wish you a busy and profitable festive period, a lovely rest with loved ones after and Health, Happiness and Prosperity for the New Year. Stay safe.

Louise Tierney Lash Inc Editor @inc.business @lashinc

Here are some of the things other people are doing in the industry. Marketing - Setting their sights on really standing out from the crowd and increasing their marketing activity. Retailing more – Selling aftercare kits, home pamper kits and even custom strip lashes, magnetic liner lashes and more. Selling student kits to students. Diversifying into other areas – Lash artists learning new treatments to offer, rather than specalising in lashes. Or becoming Educators so they can have the option of teaching online. Starting complementary businesses or even starting something completely new and running it alongside their salon. I myself started a property business during lockdown renovating run down property and now I have salon premises that I rent to talented hair and beauty experts. Full videos on how you can do this are on the Lash Inc VIP app. If you are not a member, you can sign up at lashinc. com/vip

LASHES

From lashing to podcasting & everything in between When a great idea hits you – act on it! Research it, talk to experts, plan it out and if it’s a good fit for you, go for it!

T

he idea for the Lash Artist Box came to me after attending a beauty industry convention, the Chicago IECSC, in the spring of 2018. I had walked the vendor floor one afternoon speaking to different beauty companies and sampling their products. They complained of the same things I had been complaining about like travel costs, convention show expenses, and the opportunity cost to leave our businesses for a few days to attend the show. They also went on to mention how difficult it was to get every attendee over to their booth and then even harder to sell to them with all of the other competition there. Later that day I took an education course from a businessman who had become very successful from subscription-based businesses. I went home and for weeks was thinking about how to combine a subscription model with the lash industry so that I could earn a little more income to open my dream salon! Since entering the beauty industry in 2003, I had obtained a business degree and knew that owning a salon was my main goal. Then, on a Sunday afternoon over an ice-cold beer with my family, the idea for the Lash Artist Box came to me. The L.A.B., for short, was the very first subscription box for professional lash artists to discover new products, companies and trainings in the comfort of their own home without having to take time out of their busy work/family life schedules. Subscribers get to try products at a fraction of the retail cost and once they fall in love they can purchase more directly from the company, sometimes with another discount!

8 Lashes

Since its inception the subscriber count grew month over month by the hundreds and keeping up with the demand became overwhelming since it was just me running the entire show! It was named a Top 10 Subscription Box of 2018 and lash artists from all over the world were joining. I eventually saved enough money and opened my dream salon, Suburban Lash & Beauty, located near Akron, Ohio on my 35th birthday in 2019. Owning the L.A.B. has opened up so many windows of opportunity like becoming a journalist for Lash Inc Magazine, judging international lash competitions, speaking at conferences and forming lifelong relationships. I met Nikki Huebner, founder of Endure Beauty, and became a head trainer for her company and I now get to work with Nikki and her amazing team to bring new technology

to the global lash industry. I was even featured on handfuls of industry podcasts! This was where my interest for podcasting began. Between my growing salon and the Lash Artist Box, the stress consumed me and I started to lose my mind.. and my hair! I decided it was best for myself and my family to pull back from something and after meeting Katie Allen at The Lash Conference in 2019, I knew she’d be the perfect fit to take over the company! During the pandemic I decided to launch a fun passion project that I had been wanting to do for a very long time: a podcast all about my favourite decade, the 90’s, called The One With All The 90s. It has already become a top 100 show in its category and is packed with our favourite things from the 90’s, including the celebrities! My point is this: If you have an idea or a dream, you owe it to yourself to explore the opportunities of how to bring that dream to fruition. One road can lead to another and another and soon you may just find yourself in a world you didn’t even know could exist surrounded by influential people you never thought you would meet! I still work behind the chair lashing guests 35 hours a week, manage the salon, a family and a growing podcast. I can’t wait to see the future growth of the Lash Artist Box and I urge you to check it out for yourself at www.lashartistbox.com! You can find the podcast on Apple podcasts, Spotify or wherever you listen to your favourite podcasts. It’s great to listen to while lashing! Katie Gross Suburban Lash & Beauty

I

t’s hard for me to write about my journey in the lash industry because I don’t feel I can put into words what this industry has done for me and my life. I started this business literally knowing nothing about lashes. Almost four years later, with hard work and consistency, I have gained my own business, financial freedom and personal fulfilment. I started my journey like many others. I was living pay check to paycheck and I needed to find something that would help pay the bills and contribute to my family’s well-being. I started making lash wands in my kitchen while also taking care of my daughter. I started posting the wands on Facebook groups. (When I say posting them on Facebook groups, I mean spamming, and spamming hard!!) I would reach out to every lash brand to see if they were interested in what I had to offer. I would never leave a rock unturned. I started only with the hope of making extra money, but instead something happened that I was not expecting. The wonderful women in this industry supported, encouraged and lifted me up!

small businesses and entrepreneurs like this one. Because of this, my business has continued to grow and this year I was even able to open a retail location in Atlanta for Beyoutiful Wandz for production, sales, store pick ups and Lash Appointments. None of this would be possible without the support of this amazing lash community.

I don’t know another industry that gets behind

The Lash Artist Box was born around the same time

as Beyoutiful Wandz. I remember reaching out to Katie Gross asking if my products from Beyoutiful Wandz could be in the box. When she agreed, I was so excited! The Lash Artist Box helped me and my business grow! It literally put my product into hundreds of lash artists hands. It also connected me to many amazing people in the lash industry. When Katie recently approached me regarding possibly purchasing The Lash Artist Box Company, I was so excited and thought it would be a perfect fit! Last week, I had a woman excitedly reach out to me about wanting to put her products in The Lash Artist Box and it reminded me of myself just four years ago. It felt like such a full circle moment and I am so honoured to be able to give back to the small businesses and entrepreneurs in this industry that have given so much to me. As the new The Lash Artist Box owner I am so excited to throw myself into this project and to help grow our industry and community even further! Thank you! Katie Allen Owner of The Lash Artist Box

How to take care of eyelash extensions Whether you just got back from your first appointment with a lash artist, or have been wearing them for a while, learning how to take care of lash extensions is key. Once you’ve learned some tips and tricks, you’ll be able to enjoy beautiful lashes on daily basis.

T

herefore, in this article, we’ll dive deeper into the topic and discuss what steps you should take to ensure that your eyelash extensions last as long as possible and look great at all times.

4. Skip saunas, steam rooms, sunbeds, and pools. All of that could prevent your false lashes from properly bonding. 5. Do not use oil-based makeup products. If possible, avoid using makeup altogether.

Taking care of your lash extensions When it comes to taking care of your eyelash extensions, there are different steps you should follow right after the treatment (within the first 24-48 hours) and afterward.

Eyelash extension aftercare After eyelash extension treatment, make sure you follow these steps to ensure that your lashes last as long as possible: 1. Wash lash extensions daily. One of the most common myths regarding lash extensions is that you cannot wet lash extensions. The truth is the opposite. If you’d like to read more on why washing lashes is key, we highly recommend reading our previous blog post. 2. Use gentle products. Once you get eyelash extensions, you need to wash them daily with specially created foam cleansers. 3. Do not use products that contain oils, and avoid any waterproof products. Such products will make your false lashes lasting shorter than they could. Hence, opt for non-oil-based cosmetic products.

Aftercare within the first 24-48 hours During the first two days of having your lash extensions, you should take some extra care and stick to the following tips: 1. Do not pick your lashes, and don’t try to fix them. If something is not right, gently brush your lashes and then leave them. 2. Try sleeping on the back to avoid destroying your false lashes. 3. Do not watch dramas and avoid any situations that could make you cry.

Dos and don'ts for eyelash extensions To improve the retention of your eyelash extensions, consider the following dos and don’ts. Dos 1. Use oil-free products, eye cleansers, and makeup removers. It is important to avoid oil-based products as they tend to a ect the adhesive bond of the glue. 2. Brush your lashes regularly. Brushing your extensions two times a day (in the morning and before bedtime) is key. As always, be gentle, and use your mascara brush to do that. 3. Book regular refill visits with your lash artist. To ensure you have perfect lashes at all times, scheduling regular appointments for in lls is key. 4. If you can, sleep on your back. There are many people who hate sleeping on their backs, and you may be one of them. However, if you want to improve your lash retention, try this tip out!

Dont's 1. No picking. If you see that something is not right, consult your lash artist that will fix the extensions without ruining them. 2. Avoid oil-based products. It’s worth repeating over and over again that oil-based products are no good when you have false lashes. 3. Don’t go to the cheapest lashes artist. Whether it’s a refill procedure or an actual treatment, always choose the most qualified artist you can afford to avoid any irritations and fake-looking lashes. Do you have to refill eyelash extensions? The short answer is - YES! Once you get eyelash extensions, you are committed to taking care of them and visiting your eyelash master for regular refills. It is generally agreed that most people lose 2 to 3 natural lashes every day. It means that, on average, you are losing 21 lashes every week, 42 lashes every two weeks, and around 63 lashes every three weeks. It is important to visit your eyelash artist every two to three weeks to get refills and ensure that your extensions look as good as possible. If you want to improve your lash retention, we highly recommend testing out our Instant Cure product! Eyelash extensions aftercare tools and products

Now that you are aware of some of the best tips you should follow when it comes to eyelash extensions, let’s look at what kind of products and tools you should invest in: 1. Eyelash or mascara brush. This little tool will help you take care of your lash extensions between appointments with your lash artist. 2. Tweezers. If you have had lash extensions for a while, you may have got accustomed to using tweezers to remove some individual lashes that no longer look good. However, skip this step and book the earliest appointment with your lash artist if you are just starting with lash extensions. 3. Instant Cure product. It’s one of the best products that can help to increase your lash retention. 4. Eyelash Serum and Treatments. These products are optional, but they are great if you want to improve your natural eyelashes and increase their growth.

FAQs Can I use baby shampoo to clean my eyelash extensions? No. The PH level of baby shampoo is not designed for lash extensions and can affect lash retention. Instead, invest in a product created specifically for false lashes. Can you swim in the ocean with lash extensions? Absolutely. However, always remember to wash your lashes after the swim, as salty water can affect retention. Moreover, salty water also is likely to irritate eyes even if you are not wearing extensions. As lash extensions take a longer time to dry after the swim, wash them to avoid unpleasant feeling. Can I use micellar water to clean eyelash extensions? Technically, you could, but we do not recommend it. You will only get a good result with micellar water if it’s PH level is the same as lash extensions foam cleansers, so it’s not too oily. Therefore, always read the ingredient list before using the micellar water for your false lashes. Follow us instagram flawless_lashes_by_loreta FACEBOOK @FLbyLoreta

Are your cosmetic based lash products safe? by Eyelash Excellence Clients suffering allergic reactions to lash extensions, lash artists developing respiratory problems, does this sound familiar, if so, read on.

I

f you are one of the “lucky” artists that have never had a client suffer a reaction, or you do not currently suffer with respiratory issues since working in the lash industry, then we urge you to still read the below. This could be some of the most vital information you learn during your lash career. Here at Eyelash Excellence, we are passionate about providing safe products to the lash industry. We are also passionate about educating the industry about all things lashes. We work closely with our UK manufacturers to ensure that we have an excellent understanding of not only our ingredients but the legislation governing cosmetic based products and the long terms effects that many unregulated lash products are having on the health of not only our clients but ourselves as lash artists. As the lash industry continues to grow, we of course continue to see new products being developed overtime. These products are sold across the globe to an International industry. But how many lash artists “really” know what ingredients are in their products and most importantly, are safe? As a result of the above, we have been studying cosmetic based lash products entering the UK from the Far East (which is where most lash products are manufactured). We wanted to see the quality and safety of the influx of these new products, which are now extremely cheap to buy.

12 Lashes

Our research and findings over the years has left us horrified, we have seen most products entering the UK containing ingredients that are not approved or banned altogether, yet they are still making their way into the market and being used on clients. So how is this happening? The International lash industry is unregulated and there is no global organisation that polices the safety of the cosmetic products we use across the globe. Lash artists are unknowingly buying non approved and unregulated products that pose serious health risk to not only themselves but their clients. The lash industry is relatively new, therefore the long term health risks have yet to be identified. Give it 5-10 years and we will sadly be seeing extremely sick clients and lash artists as a result of using unsafe products due to an unregulated industry. At Eyelash Excellence we felt it was time to educate the industry so that they understand the real truth as to what is really happening and we hope that you will join us in our mission to stamp our unregulated cosmetic based products to protect our clients, ourselves and the industry. What is a cosmetic product? Cosmetics are constituted from a mixture of chemical compounds derived from either natural

sources or synthetically created ones. Cosmetics can be classed as products such as skin care or body cleansers as well as those designed to enhance one;s appearance (makeup etc). In addition, they can also fall into the category of any substance or mixture intended to be placed in contact with the various external parts of the human body. From this, we can see that lash products certainly fall into the category of cosmetics – namely the liquid-based products we use – NOT accessories! •A dhesives •P rimers •P H Balancers •C leansers •B onders •D e-bonders •L iquids •N ot Accessories ( lashes, mascara wands, applicators, tweezers etc) Cosmetic legislations covering cosmetic lashbased products Below you will see a quick overview of the cosmetic legislations covering just a few of the main countries across the globe: • ( UK & EU) The UK and European cosmetic products are covered by robust safety legislation, the EU Cosmetic Products Regulation 1223/2009 (CPR).

• ( USA) The USA FDA regulates cosmetics under the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act) • ( AUS) In Australia the National Industrial Chemicals Noti cation and Assessment Scheme (NICNAS)” is responsible for managing cosmetic based products. • ( CAD) All cosmetics sold in Canada must be safe to use and must not pose any health risk. They must meet the requirements of the Food and Drugs Act and the Cosmetic regulations. There are many different regulations covering each country, therefore it can be a mine field to know whether our lash cosmetics are covered in your country and most importantly safe. Most cosmetic based lash products are NOT manufactured within the country you live in, therefore do you know that what you buying is really that safe, or approved within your country? It is even harder for the suppliers to ensure that what they are buying in from the manufacturer conforms to their country’s regulations, or the countries that they distribute to – and of course is SAFE!!!! The main manufacturers of our lash products are based in countries that you will see below. •C hina – lashes/accessories/liquids Vietnam – lashes/accessories/liquids •K orea – lashes/accessories/liquids Pakistan – tweezers/tools

So why do we choose to buy our products from outside of our own countries and not just work with manufacturers much closer to home? •C heap products ($2-5 wholesale price for adhesives/primers/lash trays etc.) • Cheap shipping, • Mass produced •W ide selection (suppliers can source every product they retail from one manufacturer) •H igh strength (cosmetics) – long retention (who doesn’t love lashes that last weeks?) •M ain countries that manufacturer (no choice but to buy from outside of your own country) Of course, we all love a bargain but when we buy cheap cosmetic products, they are usually cheap for a reason. Cosmetics that contain “high quality ingredients” do not come cheap. Not only to cover the quality of the base products, but the costs of having these cosmetics approved to meet safety regulations. Safety certifications have to be outsourced to independent companies; this comes at a high price. Outside agencies have to be brought in to certify every cosmetic product to approve it for safe use. This costs companies thousands of dollars, which will eat into any profits. When products are already being manufactured for super cheap, can you be con dent that high quality cosmetic products, that have been independently certified can cost only $2-5 wholesale?

The answer is no and you know that, but why do we still hunt out the cheapest product? The reality is that safe cosmetic lash products with the correct certifications, can actually cost suppliers 5-8 times as much as this to buy in at wholesale. This is why many lash suppliers choose cheap cosmetic products, either unknowingly or unethically. What are the issues that lash supplier encounter when outsourcing abroad? Firstly, finding trusted and ethical manufacturers is time consuming, costly, hard work. It takes heavy investment as well as months if not years to source, test and produce products. When you outsource overseas, the Brand trusts the manufacturer;s word that they’re following all the specifications and that the finished product will be safe, effective, and what they’ve promised. Many manufacturers quote a very low price to produce their products, a price they can’t actually meet at their facility. Without the brands knowledge, they actually outsource to a much less expensive factory and make a small profit. The brand now has no idea who’s producing their product (and how it’s being produced). Quality starts high then decreases overtime – they have the brands money as well as months of time and sample costs.

Lashes 13

A common scenario: Manufacturers substitute a brand’s ingredients for lower-quality, lower-cost ingredients without consulting the brand. So, the product the brand thinks they’re selling has been altered in ways they aren’t even aware of. When products are produced overseas, brands have little or no visibility into their production. While they can provide specifications on ingredients and production methods, they can’t be sure these guidelines are being followed. Think back to a time when a product you have always used seemed to have changed formula, yet your seller claims this isn’t the case. The seller isn’t being dishonest, they personally haven’t but the manufacturer has. Unless that seller tests every product they sell, it is impossible for them to have 100% quality control. Now imagine the health effects that the change of ingredients/quality products can have on an individual when using cosmetic based products. If a manufacturer chooses to substitute an ingredient in any of our Lash based cosmetic products, this can easily go undetected and cause serious risk to clients. When cost is the main priority, that means other aspects like safety, quality, and ethics take a back seat. If savings can be found by choosing lower quality ingredients or producing under unethical conditions, then so be it. How is the allowed to happen? Because no one polices the production or export/ importation of cosmetic based products. Very few cosmetics are ever inspected for quality and safety on entry into a country. The FDA only inspects about 0.3% of imported cosmetics into the USA. Think how many unsafe products are imported every day. Here at Eyelash Excellence we are not only passionate about producing safe products, but conforming to the very strict safety regulation that govern the UK and Europe which we were a part of until recently. We cannot do what many other lash suppliers outside of the EU do, which is buy in cosmetic based products from East Asia as they do not comply with our strict regulations – they actually all fall very short of what is classed as safe. Instead, we have to have our cosmetic based products manufactured in either the UK or EU to ensure we conform and most importantly so that we as sellers, are 100% con dent that what we

14 Lashes

are selling is safe. This costs us ‘a lot’ more than the $2-5 wholesale price that many sellers pay for their cosmetic products. However, because no one actually policies the importation of cosmetic lash products, we could choose to buy cheap lash products and retail them to the industry. However, we are ethical suppliers and would never risk health for profit. Below you will see the regulations that we must conform to under UK Legislation Correct SDS: The SDS provides the safety information for that product. It includes ingredients that require to be known for safety issues, skin irritant, harmful, as well as information for transport, safety details for labelling, anything that is relevant to the safety side of the product. Labelling – GHS Compliant: GHS stands for the Globally Harmonized System of the Classification and Labelling of Chemicals. It is a set of guidelines for ensuring the safe production, transport, handling, use and disposal of chemicals. The vast majority of labels from suppliers outside of Europe do not meet these requirements. REACH Compliant: REACH is a regulation of the European Union, adopted to improve the protection of human health and the environment from the risks that can be posed by chemicals, while enhancing the competitiveness of the EU chemicals industry. … REACH stands for Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals. Most lash adhesives are not REACH compliant? CMR – Con ict Mineral Reporting Compliant: EU cosmetics legislation contains provisions on the use of substances classified as carcinogenic, mutagenic, or toxic for reproduction (CMR substances) in cosmetic products. The use of CMR substances is prohibited and should never be present in lash adhesives – many outside the EU do. CAS Number A universally recognized number and used to provide a unique, unmistakable identifier for chemical substances. Many lash products have either no or the incorrect CAS numbers.

Why are many UK lash artists using “banned” products? Many UK lash artists are unknowingly buying in lash cosmetics that are do not conform to our safety standards. Amazon, eBay, AliExpress etc all sell cheap cosmetic lash products with super quick shipping. Many now choose to buy their supplies from these cheap sites for price and convenience. These sites do not police their cosmetics. Consumers assume that because they can buy it, then it must be safe. If you are outside of the UK or EU then it is likely you are reading this and thinking “this does not apply to me, so I will keep buying my usual products.” You are WRONG! The UK/EU has extremely strict regulations (some of the safest in the world.) If we have deemed it to be unsafe, there is evidence to suggest it is unsafe for humans. Just because you live/work outside of the EU does not make you immune to the potential health risks. Millions of pounds are spent researching the safety of these products, other countries should not ignore this. Use these findings to draw an International safety standard. This is why many reputable lash suppliers are now sourcing cosmetic lash products from UK/EU. If you are still unconvinced, let us share some more evidence with you: As stated above, we at Eyelash Excellence have been working with our UK manufacturers and studying other cosmetic based products that we are seeing entering the UK from the Far East. We have been horrified by some of the cosmetic based products we have seen that contain ingredients that are not approved or banned. Below are just a few of the extremely harmful ingredients we have seen in cosmetic based lash products that are available to buy. PolyIsocyanate This carries many warnings and is not approved for use. This substance is fatal if inhaled, causes serious eye irritation, may cause damage to organs through prolonged or repeated exposure, is suspected of causing cancer, is harmful if swallowed, causes skin irritation, may cause respiratory irritation, may cause allergy or asthma symptoms or breathing difficulties if inhaled and may cause an allergic skin reaction.

N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP) This ingredient is toxic to the reproductive system of male and female test animals. The reproductive effects of NMP in humans have not been studied (there is a reason for this). Based on the animal tests, you should treat NMP as a potential human reproductive hazard. Many lash artists are unknowingly using cosmetic lash products that contain NPM. Most lash artists and clients are women of childbearing age, and are being exposed on a regular occurrence to this ingredient. Phthalic anhydride / Polymethylene polyphenyl polyisocyanate) The acute (short-term) effects from exposure in humans consists of irritation to the eyes, respiratory tract, and skin. Chronic (longterm) effects observed in workers exposed are conjunctivitis, rhinoconjunctivitis, bronchitis, and irritation of the skin and mucous membranes of the respiratory tract. Animal studies indicate that chronic exposure to these vapours causes congestion, irritation, and injury to lung cells. How many of you reading this have developed these above respiratory symptoms over the years? This is not just “one of these things”, instead it can be prevented if you use safe cosmetic lash products. IT DOESN’T MATTER WHETHER YOUR COUNTRY PROHIBITS THEM OR NONINTENSIVE RESEARCH HAS SHOWN THEM TO BE UNSAFE. WHY WOULD YOU IGNORE THIS AND PUT YOURSELF AND YOUR CLIENTS AT RISK? IT IS TIME TO TAKE ACTION AGAINST UNSAFE PRODUCTS IN AN “INTERNATIONALLY” UNREGULATED INDUSTRY When you use safe and approved products, is it ‘very’ rare that a client will experience a reaction. Of course, it is not impossible, however quality cosmetic products go through rigorous testing and approval to ensure they are safe, and reactions are rare.

Most client’s that react, do so to either poor products, or an underlying intolerance to poor products used on them overtime. So even if they are then swapped over to good quality products, the body already has an intolerance lying in wait and exposure to any product (even good quality) can then aggravate an underlying intolerance. Since Frankie Widdows (founder of Eyelash Excellence) developed her own brand in 2015, she has had zero reactions from clients wearing her Eyelash Excellence products. NB – these were clients that had NOT worn lashes previously elsewhere for long periods and may have been already exposed to poor quality cosmetic based lash products. How do you know the ingredients in your cosmetic lash products? Unfortunately, this is almost impossible to know, as manufacturers do not list their full ingredients, or exact formulations. The reasons for this is to prevent theft of a product. Many believe that the SDS will provide them with what they need to know, however the SDS is only to provide the safety information as discussed before. It will only include the ingredients that are required to be known for safety issues: skin irritant, harmful, as well as information for transport, safety details for labelling, anything that is relevant to the safety side of the product. Just to reiterate: Many SDS that are from other countries do not meet these requirements, for example – keeping ingredient details a secret, or the percentage of ingredients that simply do not add up!

How do we get around this? It is actually very simple! Buy only from trusted sellers: (who is the brand owner/are they a lash expert/do they educate about the quality of their product. You should be able to Google your brand and easily find out who is behind it. What is their ethos, where do they manufacturer their products etc. Please Avoid Amazon/Ebay/Aliexpress etc. This is where many cheap and unregulated products are sold. These sites do not police their products which is why you can buy anything from them. There will be times where trusted sellers choose to use these sites as another platform but on the whole avoid. You may be worried that it will cost you too much to buy safe products, this couldn’t be further from the truth. There are many ethical lash brands just like us at Eyelash Excellence that source only safe products and still retail for an affordable price. For us ethical suppliers what we do is about passion and not profit so please support those brands. If we all pull together, we can all take a stance against these unethical unsafe products saturating our industry and will eventually destroy it if we do not try to change things. Interestingly, many ethical global lash brands now have their cosmetic based products manufactured in the UK/EU for all the reasons we have discussed. Use the suppliers to source your products from so that you can be 100% con dent that you are working with safe products. Do not line the pockets of unethical suppliers. Article by Eyelash Excellence

However, many manufacturers from the Far East attempt to get around this and use the SDS to include what looks like the full formula, giving exact percentages, all adding up to 100% composition, therefore making the SDS looking much more conclusive to those with little knowledge of SDS which are most lash artists.

Regulate your environment We all know that the weather can have an impact on products and how they work, hot and cold temperatures can create challenging conditions for any lash artist.

W

e have put some suggestions together to help you get the most out of your adhesive so that you can have the same reliable results as always. Conditions This is important at any time of the year and should remain constant. We recommend 20-24 degrees with 40-70% humidity as ideal conditions. These are our guidelines but we know that some of you work successfully below or above these conditions so if its working for you then don't change it but if you notice a difference in your adhesive or how it reacts then it might be worth checking your conditions. Keep an eye on your conditions and try to keep it constant, ie temperatures might drop through the night so if you start lashing first thing in the morning then you might notice that the adhesive is different to later on when your room is warmer and this might change how the adhesive behaves.

Storage It is best to keep your adhesives in a bag or jar with moisture absorbent granules. Some therapists use rice, others silicone but it is important to change the medium regularly otherwise it might not be effective. Imagine a sponge - once it is soaked full with water it won't be able to absorb any more moisture. Rice or granules work the same way so they need to be replaced regularly in order to be effective. It is also worth mentioning that the different mediums have different rates of absorption which means that they all work differently. We found silicone beads most effective as they can absorb far more moisture than rice for example, however even the silicone beads need to be replaced regularly.

Cleaners Whilst the salon environment was always clean and looked after we now clean and sanitize even more to combat Covid. Depending on the products you use this could have an affect on the adhesive especially if your products contain alcohol or harsh chemicals so if you are noticing changes in your adhesive then this is another area you might need to check. Shelf Life During lockdown a few products got forgotten on the back of the shelf so it is important to check how long they have been open to ensure you can rely on them when you need them. Adhesive vials should be used within 24-48 hours once open, however unopened they can last a couple of months. The bottles can be stored longer as they have a better closure to be airtight, however even they need to be replaced regularly. Most therapists change the adhesive every 4-6 weeks however this also depends how busy you are and how often you open and expose the adhesive to air. Some therapists manage to use the adhesive for a good few months if stored correctly.

Shaking We do recommend to shake the adhesive vigorously before each use and we found the best way to do this is by removing the lid, cover the nozzle with a non woven strip (wax strip for example) and then shake vigorously for a good few minutes. It is best to time this as it will feel as if your arm is falling o so the time will feel longer than it is. Then use the strip to remove any residue from around the nozzle before replacing the lid. This way the lid will stay clean and won't stick. Some therapists use automated shakers but this means that you have to shake the bottle with lid which can result in the lid sticking and build up of adhesive around the nozzle can also prevent an airtight closure between lid and nozzle.

Sensitivity Some clients are experiencing sensitivity which can be due to a long period without treatments during lockdown but it can also be a combination of mask wearing or warmer temperatures in the salon. You can use the SENSITIVE adhesive (black or clear) which specially designed for sensitive clients but if you find it slower setting than your other adhesives then try using it with the SPEED UP SOLUTION so you can get faster setting times while keeping your clients comfortable. Alternatively you can use a NANOMISTER which is really comfortable for clients and this helps with sensitivity too!

Masks Another result of Covid is the duty to wear masks which can affect the treatment outcome too. Clients might arrive with homemade masks which don't seal around the nose, which means the breath (warm air and moisture) will travel upwards and can affect your adhesive. You can firm the mask around the nose or even tape it so the seams towards the eye area are sealed. For your own safety and to avoid sensitivity it is best to use a minimum of FFP2 rated mask to ensure you get protection from fumes and odours during your lash day. These are just some of the most common pitfalls but please remember to get in touch if you need help with anything at all! Follow us instagram flirtieshq

The unique eyelash extension technology illumino’s story, founder and CEO Soo-Jin gives a glimpse into her company's past, present, and future

L

ong before the arrival of her company's unique eyelash extension technology, Soo-Jin, a licensed manicurist since 2006, decided to return to beauty college in the evenings to attain her aesthetician license. During that time, something piqued her interest: a particular classmate who came into class with eyelash extensions that they had received in Los Angeles. Soo-Jin was intrigued about how those lashes stayed on without the strip lash band on the eyelids. So when Soo-Jin's school offered a supplementary course for beginner’s eyelash extensions, she enthusiastically registered. While Soo Jin had a great interest in the subject, this eyelash extension training was by no means state-of-the-art. The instructor pretty much just told the students, "okay! Pick up the lashes, dip them in the glue and apply them on your partner". There was little to no guidance on attaching the lashes properly or even what proper isolation was supposed to be. Soo-Jin did her best while attaching the extensions to her fellow student (who also happened to be a friend). In fact, during the application, that friend was so relaxed that she drifted asleep. When that friend opened her eyes, both of them loved the outcome and instantly Soo Jin found a new passion! For months to come, Soo-Jin became the unofficial lash technician at her beauty college. "I love that it relaxes people and is therapeutic for me, but I also get gratification from my clients when they open their eyes to see their new lashes and how pretty they look and feel,"

20 Lashes

explains Soo-Jin. The gratifying feeling as a lashtech is what propelled her into the world of lashes. Once Soo-Jin opened her full-service Spa, Cosmo Spa Lounge, one of the most popular services requested was lash extensions. While applying lashes on clients, she encountered many issues with the product. Soo-Jin recalls that at the time lash techs had to make do with what was available as, "the products weren't made specifically for eyelash extensions." With blonde clients, in particular, it was harder to see their eyelashes with the conventional white eye gel pads that were on the market at the time. She wanted to create eye gel pads in colour other than white, but manufacturers did not want to take up the job. While she waited to hear back from any manufacturer who was willing to create her product, she brainstormed what colour the pads would be. While in Las Vegas for a trade show event, she noticed the green colour of the crap table she was playing at made all the other objects pop; that is when it clicked that the green colour eye gel pads would help lash technicians see. With a green backdrop below the client's lashes, the gel pads play to the strength of the photoreceptors of the human eye, which can analyse the visual plane for lighter-coloured lashes. The illumino’s Green Eye Gel Pad: It was the first invention to launch and was exceptionally well received. One of the best feelings for Soo-Jin, who identifies as an inventor, is “moving past issues we all face by solving the underlying problems.”

Amid illumino's growth, Soo-Jin had one client in particular who was a heavy makeup wearer with oily skin. She recalls, "she would come back for free re lls, coming in for 15-minute refills, it was almost a weekly thing. I had struggles doing her lashes, as I had to work much harder so as not to sacrifice the bar I had set for myself on quality!". For some people, retention is an issue and out of a lash artist's control. Soo-Jin also had a background as a nail technician, which made her wonder, is there an eyelash extension technology that parallels the miraculous gel polishes, a product that wouldn’t chip, cures in seconds with a light, and lasts longer than conventional lash adhesives. She met with a renowned chemist who used to work with CND Shellac product Doug Schoon to find out. His answer was, well, maybe one day. The Idea The glue, he said, would be easier to formulate. However, he said the device would be nearly impossible to create because there wasn't a set of blueprints on how to manufacture a device safe for use around the eye area. Doug gave his opinion on what he thought could help make it safe, but it would be very challenging; his meeting did not deter Soo-Jin from further pursuing the idea. The prototype model had a foot pedal, but repeatedly tapping to turn it on and off , she found it was cumbersome. So, after going back to the drawing board and many iterations later, the new Lynk-Gel device was born.

The Product Finally, after eight years of soul-searching and R&D, she launched a device certified by the American National Standard Institute. The Lynk-gel only weighs 1.1 oz; with its lightweight and ergonomic design using a touch sensor (and no pedal), Soo-Jin hopes to make it easier to hold the isolation tweezers for long periods of time. The glue that supposedly would be easier to formulate took more than three years to create. No U.S. manufacturer wanted to make a light-curable glue (she wanted a U.S. manufacturer because of higher safety standards and less risk of intellectual property getting stolen). After over two years of searching for a company to make their

glue, it took another year and a half years to formulate and test before it was ready to be bottled and sold.

This glue is called Lynk-Gel glue and has the same personality as eyelash adhesive since it is cyanoacrylate based, and it doesn’t need UV light; the light is on the visible light spectrum. The Lynk-Gel glue is clear and free of pigments that could serve as allergens or irritants. It needs to be refrigerated since it doesn’t have the same preservatives and stabilizers as conventional glues. The glue cures in just a matter of seconds using the hand-held light LynkGel device.

During testing in the beta stage, all clients who had previously shed tears and red eyes in the past were no longer experiencing the issue. Because the Lynk-Gel instantly dried in a matter of seconds, they were getting fewer fumes around their eyes. Soo-Jin decided to patent her idea and protect it due to being at the forefront of something new and revolutionary from previous business experience. Follow us instagram illuminoextensions

Brow expert and salon system educator on brow lamination trends The past year has been a rollercoaster, it’s had its ups and downs, highs and lows and has hit our industry hard. Many of our clients have been resorting to home treatments and DIY techniques to keep their brows in check. Now with our industry starting to rebuild and get back on track we are faced with a lot of corrective work, especially on those brows!

O

ur brow game has never been more needed and as our eyes continue to take centre stage with face mask still being part of everyday life, we need to make sure our eyes and brows are on point as they are the rst thing seen and where eyes are drawn too with the rest of our faces undercover. Brow trends are strong in 2021 a strong brow will dominate. We have seen brow lamination being a hot trend and the most requested brow treatment in 2020 and that trend isn’t going anywhere. A professional brow lamination can dramatically change the brow and a great treatment to create bigger, bolder, fuller and more volumised brows. Brow lamination offers us a chance to tame unruly messy brows, allowing us to set and position hair into a neat and uniform shape. Creating strong definition and on trend bold brows but also a perfect treatment for thinning brows, brows that have maybe been over waxed/plucked or naturally thinning with age, it allows us to position and move hair to fill in gaps, the “ fluffed” up look gives the illusion of more depth and volume, my more mature clients are loving it and have preferred brow lamination as an alternative to microblading and treatments more permanent.

Brow lamination gives you the opportunity to create the latest trends/styles and the most requested looks are:| Classic Lamination - A great way to control unruly brows and create a uniform shape, brush hairs up or down to create a light, glossy groomed look with a touch of volume, great for covering little gaps. This look works well on clients with a lot of hair. Fluffy and Feathery - Hybrid between classic and brushed looks, great for creating volume and texture. This look works well on thinning brows or sparse brows to add the illusion of volume and thickness. I am so delighted with the NEW Salon System Lash Lift and Brow Lift range. The products are kind and gentle but effective, they offer outstanding performance and allow me to work confidently. I especially love the keratin enriched nourishing serum that gives a glossy plumping look to the hair and lashes. The dual-purpose products are perfect for combining both brow and lash lifting packages.

Lash extensions in Saudi Arabia Erika has been passionate about lashes for a long time – it was her favourite beauty treatment in Japan. She moved to Saudi Arabia in 2013 and could not find a professional lash artist so she decided to start her own business. I am very honoured to re-present Flawless Lashes by Loreta team in Saudi Arabia and share professional skills with others.

24 Lashes

S

audi Arabia where I have been living for eight years now has changed a lot in past eight years. When I arrived here eight years ago, I was certain that I could find professional lash salon same as Japan. So I went to salon to do “lash extension” (one by one technique) and I was applied “clusters” and they told me NEVER access water on lashes. Right after 5 hours lashes fell by themselves. When I asked people here, nobody knew “Lash extension” which is one by one technique. They only knew “clusters” or applying strip lashes. Now 2021, lash extensions are booming in Saudi Arabia just like any other countries. So many ladies and salons are offering lash extensions service. In Saudi Arabia or Middle East, women used to (some of them still do) apply so much make up on their eyes and have very heavy style strip lashes to make their eyes look dark and sharp. I think one of the reasons is because of covering their face except eyes (religious reason). I remember I was quite surprised how much make up they applied for parties or weddings. You cannot even recognize their face due to heavily applied make up. The world was going towards more "natural look" and here they were going complete opposite way or stayed in this way for long time. But when I started lashes in 2017, I provided natural style lashes which they never feel

uncomfortable or too long or making their eyes smaller. And surprisingly they appreciated my lashes so much because it was something NEW to them that they could have their lashes exactly what they wanted. So I was quite convinced that there was a demand on natural look for Saudi women, they just could not find the right person or salon to do so. By word by mouth my business was spread rapidly. Till now, most of my clients come to me looking for natural look lashes. And, I take my time for consultation to listen what clients are exactly looking for and examine their eyes shape to choose the best lash design. The most popular menu at my salon is CLASSIC and HYBRID (mix of classic and volume). These are the most ones can provide daily use look lashes at my salon. Of course depending on what clients are looking for their desire look but I am very happy to be able to provide lash styles that they are looking for. Now more women are looking for having natural look in general and natural eyes make up including eye lashes. They want to have more natural look, not fake, not making their eyes small by having unsuitable lash style. As I said, lash extensions are very popular service in Saudi Arabia now, some people do this service unbelievably cheap price and some people are charging extremely high price. My prices are not cheap but reasonable price for what I can provide

for my professional technique. I have worked very hard to obtain my skills, invested so much on my lash education by traveling around to reach out the best trainers around the world. Sadly, majority of women in here still believe that lash extensions damages their natural lashes. That believe comes from their previous bad lash experiences by uneducated lash technician. So I became certified lash trainer by Flawless lashes by Loreta in 2019 and started providing Professional lash training here in Saudi Arabia. I also deeply care about my lash education so I wanted to provide the BEST quality lash education as well as lash products to start with. I keep my training very small group (either one on one VIP or one on two semi private) so that I can keep my 100% attention to my students. So far, all my students are doing well and providing very professional lash services which makes me very happy. My motto is always QUALITY OVER QUANTITY. I will keep providing the BEST lash service and lash education to build my community even bigger here in Saudi Arabia. Follow us instagram omotenashi_eyelashes

Handmade, pre-made or pro-made volume Who can still remember how excited we were to be working with J-Curls? I guess I am showing my age with this post (or at least I am admitting how long I have been involved in lashes, enhancements and everything surrounding these!)

J

-Curl lashes were the first available curl and they came lose in little clear plastic pots.....and what is worse, is that everyone thought "the thicker the better" so 0.25 diameter was the norm back then! How excited were we when the B-curl was introduced and it was such a novelty to have a “stronger” curl. Little did we know that the curls would advance to DD curl now. The single lashes were supplied lose in a little clear tub and we always needed a few minutes before each appointment to sort the lashes in order to make the appointment easier and less fiddly. Just looking at the lash trays, we have come such a long way, the lash extensions are now aligned on strips for easier pickup and application, the trays are made from cardboard to ensure we stay as sustainable and eco-friendly as possible and there are even pre-made and easy fan lashes…oh….not to forget coloured lashes. Who would have thought we would ever apply creative lash art? Lashes are now available in different curls (including J/B/C/CC/D/DD/ L/M) just to name a few and diameters from 0.03 so its a world away from where we started! Further more, back when the J-Curl was popular we also had cluster lashes. Yes, they were very popular as they gave an instant effect and created a fuller look (Does this sound familiar to you?) Yes, those were the beginnings of volume lashes! With extensive research we have all learned that cluster lashes can cause damage to the natural lash if applied incorrectly or worn too long and especially the lash thickness has an impact on the lash health! Fast forward to today and we are seeing a multitude of volume lashes and most lash artists now offer Volume sets - so how is this different to the Clusters back then? First of all the diameter is finer. Volume lashes should be 0.03 up to 0.10 max depending on the volume that is applied. The more lashes you apply as a fan the thinner and thus lighter the lashes have to be. You will see a huge array of single lashes for Russian or handmade volume (I will explain the difference in a minute) but also pre-made and pro-made fans and the range can vary from dainty 2D fans in 0.03 up to 10 or even 20D. As you can imagine this is a colossal difference and just because certain fans are available on the market does not necessarily mean that it is safe or advisable to use these!

26 Lashes

Secondly the adhesive plays an important part. Handmade fans offer the ability to control the amount of adhesive, whilst pre-made fans can be heat bonded or pre-bonded by glue. Thirdly the application time is different between those different lashes but each type also offers pros and cons that we are going to look at next: Let's start at the beginning..... Cluster lashes are pre-bonded with adhesive, they tend to be heavier lashes and need to be applied with a special adhesive (strip or cluster lash adhesive) to be only worn for a couple of days, hence the reason they are also called weekend lashes. The idea to apply these lashes with semi permanent adhesive to make them longer lasting is a huge NO!

Russian or handmade volume are single lashes that are picked up as a fan by the lash artist to then be applied as a fan to a single natural lash. This is a very intricate process and requires a lot of skill, in fact I would call it an art if someone has mastered to apply the fans neatly. As you can imagine it does take some time and patience to learn this and it isn't uncommon for lashers to get frustrated along the way but the outcome is beautiful and the design options are endless so you can create a truly bespoke set for your clients. On the other hand you have pre-mades - these are lashes that have been aligned as fans on a strip so you can literally pick them up and place them. There is a choice of fans, curls and diameters and you can also get coloured fans however you are more limited in the choice as you have to work with the fans that are available on the market. Whilst it can be quicker to apply these, the cost per client is also higher so you have to weigh up if the additional cost outweighs the time saving as you can o er more treatments in the same amount of time. Other pre-made lashes can be glue bonded which means that they have a little bulb of adhesive which holds them together. This is very similar to the traditional cluster lashes and if you imagine that glue bulb is being dipped into your adhesive in order to apply them to the natural lash then you can imagine that the "bulb" will be quite big (and heavy) and noticeable. The choice of lashes is huge and the fact that you are picking up the fans allows you to mix curls for a layered look, you can mix lengths for a feathered look or you can create specialty sets a la Kim K. Furthermore you can mix in colours or create lash art with handmade volume. Pre-made fans still vary hugely in quality so just because lashes are called pre-made fans does not always make them good fans. Firstly you have the quality of the lash itself and how well it holds the curl (no different to classic lashes) but you also have to consider the bond of the fan. The higher quality fans will be heat bonded which means they have literally no adhesive in order to create the fan on the strip. Experienced lashers will find it easy to pick these fans up but newbies can find it a bit tricky as the fans can fall apart if you are not experienced in picking up fans. You also get pro-mades...These a are fans that have been created by a lash artist and placed onto a strip or in a tub for you so that you can apply these as fans to your clients natural lashes.

Each type has its advantages and disadvantages and each type has its dedicated followers and a lot of lashers are keen to jump straight into volume but it is worth learning classic lashes first and then once you have mastered isolation and application it is time to venture into volume. A course will help you learn the theory behind volume lashes, how to create fans and how best to apply them in order to maintain lash health and style the set to your clients wishes. Pre-made or pro-made lashes can be mistaken for a short-cut into volume but most insurances will not cover you for the application of volume lashes (no matter if they are handmade/pre-made/pro-made) so it is worth learning this skill and spending the time to perfect this so that you can offer your clients volume sets that you can be proud of - and no doubt your clients will recommend you to friends and family. After all, word of mouth is still the strongest marketing tool and you would want your business to stand out for quality and service so it is worth putting the effort (and sweat and tears) into this. Lash Wizard Serum • Encourages lashes to grow thicker and stronger • Nourishes and improves the overall health of the lashes • Promotes the formation of keratin to condition and strengthen lashes • Fragrance, Paraben, Prostaglandin and Crueltyfree! The all-new Lash Wizard Eyelash Serum from Flawless Cosmetics is essential for making lashes thicker, fuller, stronger and longer. After just 14 days of use, you will see visible results. Lash Wizard is the brainchild of Loreta Jasilionyte, one of the lash industry's key players and trainers. After years of educating fellow lash technicians and supplying their tools of the trade, Loreta wanted to create products that were accessible and could be used effortlessly to enhance lashes with no damage or negative impacts to your natural lashes. The Negative Impacts of Popular High Street Serums Have you heard that most of the famous lash serums available can contain hormones or prostaglandins? Do you know how they affect your lash growth and what are the consequences after long-term use and how hormones a ect your lash growth cycle? Here are 3 important things you should know about your lashes: 1. Human hair grows from the hair root and is a non-living cell, tightly packed with a protein called keratin, 95% of your hair is made from this.

2. The amount of keratin depends on how fast the cells are moving through your follicle. If they are moving too fast - they don’t have enough time to get keratinised, so they move upwards and grow half-empty. 3. Hair roots get their food through capillaries and it is important to ‘feed’ your roots with the right nutrition during growth. If you feed your lashes with a serum full of hormones you are making the blood ow faster. Lashes that grow super fast and have no time to generate enough keratin can lead to lashes growing empty and losing strength. There are also many serums containing Kariprost – which is used for glaucoma treatment. You wouldn’t be advised by your doctor to use this medication every day if you do not suffer from the condition and if you expose your lashes to these ingredients for an extended period, you could be at risk of losing them! It causes hair follicles to grow and duplicate cells faster, however, they haven’t got enough time to get enough keratin. As soon as you stop using those serums, your lashes will start going back to their regular length. So why should you spend your money on these products while wearing lash extensions and have to pay-out for more regular refills? By speeding up the growth cycle, your natural lashes will fall out quicker, causing your extension to do the same. Why Is Lash Wizard Eyelash Serum Different? The Lash Wizard is a high-performance serum created with biotinoyl tripeptide, the ingredient

responsible for strengthening eyelash bres and follicles, ensuring the individual lashes grow back stronger and thicker. When using our serum, your lash cycle won’t be affected, even if you stop using it. Your lashes will be strong and full until the whole lash cycle of 90 days is complete. The product’s sophisticated technology works to penetrate the lash follicle, encouraging the formation of lash-enhancing keratin and also helps to repair damage whilst encouraging growth. The precise brush applicator delivers a nourishing treatment made up of essential proteins and vitamins to every lash. We can proudly say, our serum doesn’t contain any harmful medication or hormones, so none of the above-mentioned complications can occur. QUALITY OVER QUANTITY Sady, Lash Artist and Founder of Sadysfaction In my area of Germany there is now a lot of price dumping in the eyelash extensions market. I am very sad about that, because this treatment takes a lot of time and precision. A perfect new volume Lash treatment takes around 2.5 - 3 hours or even longer, if you are following all the rules .

I am a perfectionist and always give the best I can to make my clients happy. That’s why I wanted to offer the best lashes in town, but I also want to be well paid for this extra service. The lash retention is always very good and word has spread, which now means I am no long able to take on new clients. I prefer to have less clients so I can ensure I o er them the best quality and take my time with each client. My prices are higher than your average lash tech but I worked hard for it and was trained by the best trainers around the world. If you invest in yourself and become better, of course you should raise your prices! To attract high end customers you have to offer a high end services. It’s that simple! You want to make sure you have the best quality to stand out from the average lash artist. There are in fact many people who are searching for this special treatment and are willing to pay more to have the best quality that money can buy. Advertise your service with a focus on your uniqueness and talent. My secret is confidence! You want to display that you have the confidence in your ability to meet the needs of luxury clients. Always advertise your brand with the expertise, quality and perfect technique at the forefront.

It is important to build a vision of your target audience. What type of service they expect from you and what do they care about? What makes it so special to book an appointment with you? Then you can plan the best strategy for advertising to that level of clientele. Luxury clients are always looking after new trends and the latest developments. Try to be always up to date and outstanding. Keep an eye on Instagram, Pinterest, lash blogs and beauty publications so you are always in the loop. They want to enjoy the treatment and feel special after getting the best lashes exactly to their desired specifications, while keeping eye health in mind. Expensive clients come to their appointments expecting to pay more for the service. Low prices equates with low quality and lesser results. They associate high price with high value and exclusivity. Instead of mass production, you want then know they are receiving a unique treatment. Don’t ever offer huge discounts every other month on your services! Have you ever seen Louis Vuitton or Ferrari advertise sales on their site? They build their brand to with luxury in mind and they sell their products automatically, never with a discount. The customers will pay the higher price because they know they will consistently receive the best quality from these brands. Instead of sales, we recommend working with popular high end influencers to build your brands image and attract more of those clients. This way you will be reaching your desired audience and will not be giving the impression of reducing your prices. Positive feedback is key to winning over luxury clients. Make sure to share those glowing reviews on your website, Instagram and a third party service, such as TrustPilot or TripAdvisor to validate their authenticity. Posting high quality pictures and videos on your website or social media will also help to attract high quality clientele. If this means hiring a photographer for the day or learning how to edit your photos, it is a small price to pay to get great images of your work and appeal to luxury clients. When it comes to sharing on social media as lash business, it’s important to keep in mind to be professional and stay classy -always. It’s all in the small details to gain a big advantage when attracting those expensive clients.

I hope I could give you good advice to attract your desired audience and wish you all the best success in your flourishing career.

CLIENTS ARE A PRIORITY Sinnaid, Lash Artist and Distributor of Flawless Lashes by Loreta Mexico Make time for consultations. We know that being a lash artist with a full schedule is hard work, and that sometimes we don't have the time to go that extra mile and make consultations, and to get to know our client a little better, but it is our obligation to offer them the best possible service, because you can even double your income by investing a little more time. What?!! For example, if your next client scheduled an appointment for a set of classics, but you notice that they have very unrealistic expectations, you can offer them a Russian Volume set instead, it is your opportunity to show them why the Russian volume set is better suited to what they’re looking for and can accommodate their daily routine. This will increase your income instantly, it is just a matter of taking the time and being able to show everything you can do. The consultation goes very unnoticed, because almost nobody has 10 or 15 minutes spare to spend talking to the client, we are too worried about the next appointment, but it is so important that you realise the client in front of you right now should be the priority, and by giving away those 15 more minutes to listen to them you can generate more money and that higher quality service they are expecting. This will make them more likely to recommend you to their closest friends.

Listen to your clients and what techniques they want. Leaving aside the issues of service and entering the issue of technique, we know that the classic technique is probably the go to lash treatment, because it is cheaper and faster, but this industry is no longer what it was 5 years ago ,when we were allowed to apply 0.20 (OMG! CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?). The classic technique has now become more natural, and often luxury clients are looking for something natural but noticeable. If you have many clients asking for this look, we recommend using our Flat eyelashes. They are as soft and light as you could wish for and will help preserve the health of your client's natural lashes, while still providing a flawless end result. It is so important to use very high quality products, as you don’t want at eyelashes that look so plastic and false that they could be compared to a doll’s eyelashes. High end clients expect high end products. But thanks to the fact that the industry has advanced so much, we can now find healthy options that are still useful and beautiful at the same time. We promise that your client will look ten times better. Don't be afraid to try new products that may offer your customer some alternatives. For a long time we rejected pre-made fans, but they have become so popular and useful that every time we get new stock, they sell out almost instantly. The pre-made fans will save your life if you have a very tight schedule, and making a handmade Russian volume set will take you more than 3 hours. With pre-made fans you can create flawless sets of lashes, saving you a good amount of money, while having more quality time to offer to your clients. Make sure to go above and beyond. During these difficult times, try to offer more to your clientele, go above and beyond to make them feel special and genuinely as though having a treatment with you is the best thing that has ever happened to them. There are so many places they could go, with new lash salons popping up everyday and they have chosen to go with you. It may be because of your incredible work, your professionalism or anything else, but what they will always remember is how you treated them, so do your best to always offer quality services, with extra time and a great quality treatment.

Make it your own More and more training academies are looking to create their own brand of beauty products to use in training and also to distribute to other therapists.

T

he process of sourcing products, creating a brand and ticking all the boxes along the way is quite an expensive and time consuming project and with over 20 years of brand development (our own brands and also those we have created for customers) we feel it is important to know the ins and outs before starting on such an important project. DIY Beauty You often see therapists on the forums asking for recipes or how to make products at home. With so many brands and products on the market that have been specifically developed for that particular use it is a surprising to hear that some therapists still want to spend the time and money in mixing and creating products at home which tends to work out more expensive AND it is against the insurance. Unless you are classed as manufacturer with all the licenses that are required we would strongly advise against this. You can spend a lot of time trying to create a product which can cost you dearly if it goes wrong. Even if it goes to plan you would still be liable to comply with the various regulations and to undertake the stringent cosmetic tests etc which is just not feasible if you are just doing it to save a penny or two. Likewise, using a product, re-bottling or relabelling falls under the same category as manufacturing so unless you are set up for this and can comply with ALL the necessary requirements our advice is ...Don't do it!

Suppliers A much better option is to find a supplier who can help with your venture. First of all you need to source the product itself. This means either producing from scratch through a lab or factory which generally involves huge volume OR you need to find a supplier who offers white or private label products. You can then decide whether you want to take over the responsibility and cost of labelling and registration of the product or whether the supplier offers a ready made solution for you which involves all aspects of private label so that you can fully concentrate on marketing and selling rather than getting involved in all the nitty-gritty of creating a product. Quality If you put your name to it, you want to make sure the quality is 100% right so unless you have a trusted brand or supplier who offers this option it means lots and lots of testing. You need to purchase samples, try the products and make sure they fully align with your brand strategy. A process like this can take a lot of time and money before you find THE right product. If you find a product in the EU there is a chance that the product will be safe to use here but if you look further afield then there is a likelihood that the product might contain ingredients which may not be allowed in this country or that it might have to be tweaked to be suitable.

Labelling Believe it or not, there are even laws regarding the labels and you have to know what to include on a label, how to show it and which details must be present. We have seen products on the market that were literally made illegal as the salon owner thought it would be ok to just stick a label with a logo or name on the product. Again, mistakes like this can cost you a lot more than just a label! Compliance Each country and region has its own rules and regulations and the UK and EU have one of the toughest. No matter whether you are “producing” or “just” importing you are still the “responsible person” (this is a term from the Cosmetics EU regulations) and it means that you are liable for all the quality, challenge and cosmetics safety testing and all the risks and costs associated with this. Don't fall into the trap of thinking that you can just buy something in the internet and import it in order to use or sell it to clients. This is illegal and can land you in severe trouble and the authorities have got the power to fine you and even close your business for this. Buying abroad is risky as other countries have different regulations (if any) and the ingredients used might also not be approved in this country. Added to this often comes a language barrier and the documents you will need to successfully undertake the required tests and registrations don't exist or are not in a format that is acceptable here.

These are just a few things to consider when you are thinking about creating your own brand or product line to sell to other professionals. If you are looking to create products for retail then there are further stipulations you need to consider! As you can gather, creating your own brand generally works best for larger volume and it probably is not worth the effort, time and money if you are just looking to create a brand for your own use.

If you are just looking for a brand as a salon owner then it is more beneficial to use a reputable brand to help you establish your business through marketing and support. Please note that these points are based on the current regulations in the UK and it might be different where you are (if you are not UK based) but please check carefully what you need to consider before starting on your new journey. Marketing and pricing are also important aspects to get right, otherwise the venture wont work. There are so many things that need to be considered in order to be safe and successful and we are happy to share our knowledge and help! Flirties offer a unique opportunity for White or Private label which means that you can benefit from our vast experience, know-how and product knowledge and we will even help you create your own brand. Using a UK supplier also means that you don’t have to worry about import fees, development costs and all the associated risks as we take care of this for you.

Most of our products can be supplied as white or private label which includes lashes, adhesives, prep and aftercare, brow products, nail ranges, waxing and accessories. We are happy to help so please get in touch to find out more! Follow us instagram flirtieshq

Hidden costs If you are looking to import products in order to avoid production costs then you still have to comply with import regulations which also includes import fees, taxes, duties and other charges from the couriers. Suppliers from far away countries will often tell you that they ship free of charge, however that does not mean that there is no cost involved for you. Even if the products arrive in good condition and you are not charged import fees at that point you are still liable for it. Sounds silly? Your supplier is not responsible for this so it is easy for them to o er "free delivery" and they might mark the product as 0 value, however you are still liable for the import fees, duty and VAT and customs does keep an eye on the imports coming into this country!

The lash robot invasion is here: Has LUUM Lash found a way to replace lash artists? Cutting-edge news! What’s this with the Robot Spa? Is it a Yay or a Nay? Lash Robot Yay! Or Lash Robot Nay?

I

t was just recently when the internet was abuzz with video images of what looked like a mechanical application of lash extensions by a machine without human hands or tweezers in sight. This image of a robot putting on lashes unleashed a torrent of questions and sparked concerned interest in many a lash circle. How can it possibly be safe? How could you trust a machine to isolate? What happens when the client moves? Is this a threat to our industry? Could our skills be replaced? Could our loyal clients be tempted by electrified nuts and bolts?

As with any new technology, there’s a lot of fear and uncertainty, to be sure. This article is a quick fly-by explanation of what’s going on. In the next issue, we’ll go into a deeper dive, but for now, I’ll address some of the biggest concerns and answer some questions that have initially come up. How can it be safe? I’ve seen questions like what happens when the client moves or sneezes? What happens if they need to use the restroom? The wands look like they can stab people in the eye.

It is safe. It was designed to be safe. We all know that a lash extension is very light. It does not require much force or strength to pick it up and handle it. The prongs that isolate the lashes are very light - like the weight of a straw, and they are attached with a pillow magnet that dislodges with the slightest obstruction or touch. If there’s a sudden movement by the client - the prongs will simply safely detach. The process can be instantly stopped at any time if the client has any pressing need to get out of the chair.

Is my career on the line? No. There’s plenty of room for new technology and for lash artists to work together. This advancement Luum Lash has developed is a novel approach to getting lashes. It will expand the market because they hope to deliver lash extensions in a shorter amount of time, which will be attractive to many who normally wouldn’t want to have lashes due to the long appointment times. Will this technology replace my skills? No. Every skill you have developed and honed as a lash artist is relevant and vital. The Luum technology is a combination of robotics, computer vision, and artificial intelligence. It’s precise, and it’s safe, but it’s not warm or living. It cannot connect the way you can with clients.

It is a fantastic new tool. It has the ability to do the brunt of our work safely and quickly, but it’s only one part of the experience. What it can’t do is connect with clients and translate care and expertise. Luum needs experienced and skilled lash artists who have customer service skills and artistic lash know how to provide a new way for clients to get lashes.

lashes, so anything that expands the market and gets people to try what we offer is good for us. It can provide more demand for exactly what we do. It won’t replace your skills - the Luum technology is simply a new tool. It looks a little different from what our industry is used to, yet the skills you’ve cultivated remain essential.

While change is always tricky and can be unsettling, I want to encourage you to be curious and open to change. In life, there’s always going to be progress and innovation. The best thing to do is to embrace and adapt to it. This technology has the ability to expand our industry by introducing more people to the wonders of lashes. You know that once bitten by the lash bug, it’s hard to go back to naked

Changes to tint patch testing Over the past year, there have been considerably big changes in the way our industry uses tint. These have come from the Government, insurances and industry bodies. How we currently test patch for tint We’ve always recommended clients skin test every client before tinting their lashes or brows to check for colour/tint allergies. Currently we suggest using our Tint Patch Test Cards. These are temporary transfers which are applied to the skin – each contains a very small amount of the main allergies found in every permanent hair dye. If clients are sensitive to these active ingredients it is indicated by a small sensitivity reaction. What’s changed? The Government regulator ‘MHRA' (Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency) have recently reclassified the Colourstart Tint Patch Test cards. Due to these changes, we’ve made the decision to discontinue our Tint Patch Test Cards.

So, what is the alternative? You’ll need to patch test clients for tint by manually applying tint to the client’s skin. How do I tint patch test on skin? Mix equal parts tint to equal parts Double Shot Cream Oxidant and apply to client’s wrist or elbow, leave for 20 minutes then wipe o excess. Any reaction is likely to occur within 24-48 hours. If no reaction occurs tint can be washed off. However, if a reaction does occur, the client should let you know and seek medical advice. If there are any signs of redness, itching or swelling the treatment must not be carried out. Follow us instagram eyelashemporium

your skills such as a trainer, you’ll find it very difficult without giving yourself time each week dedicated to that solei. Allow a few hours to create and plan your content, work on marketing ideas and develop your skills. In the long run your business will see the benefits. Figure out where you want to go and were you see yourself in 5 years time, Yes, create a 5 year plan ! At some point we have to stop dreaming about it, get up and start doing it! Believe you are limitless, capable and worthy of all you aspire to be, as our dreams wont work unless we do. Listen to inspirational podcasts, follow pages that make you feel good and research steps you need to take to reach your ultimate goal. “Its YOU against YOU , compete with yourself “. Take a look at your content quality and think about educating your audience on your services and yourself, people like to see a variety of lash work an videos, posts with tips and tricks with educational aspects. Gone are the day of posting a eye shot and a cute quote, variety is key to get more exposure and engagement. There are many courses available now which can be done online to help with social media strategies, I'd highly recommend taking one if you feel your page is lacking that something special.

Content quality is super important to help your socials stand out from the crowd and help to target the right audience for your business. I have developed Amor Lash Pro to establish myself as a high quality lash artist and trainer. I also ambassador for Flawless Lashes By Loreta and provide best products to my clients and students. How to take photos like a pro So many lash artists that want to grow their social profiles focus on the amount of times they’re posting on their social pages but often forget that the quality of the images they’re posting is so important.

A

picture speaks a thousand words. We know! Lash artists are often so busy with appointments, we understand that sometimes your social presence is something you want to work on but simply don’t have the time. Therefore, we’ve put together a few simple rules that will teach you how to take photos like a pro – so when you do post, it will be quality content!

Get those angles Anyone who’s tried to get a good photo before a night out will know that it’s all about the angles – and the same applies to lash photography. There are a few rules we like to live by;

Shine a light on your work The perfect lash picture often comes hand in hand with good lighting. As a lash artist, you should have a Glamcor or a ring light shining over your clients lashes when you’re working, so make use of this for images too. Using as much natural light as possible and combining this with a bright light like a Glamcor will ensure your images will be bright and clear. Many lash artists create such beautiful sets of lashes, but often upload dark and blurry photos that don’t do the lashes justice and most of the time this is due to poor lighting! We recommend trying to take photos of the same eye in different lightings – natural, using ring lights/Glamcors, a combination of both or none at all. Comparing the photos will help to see just how much lighting can improve your photos.

1

Before & after images We live by the rule of ALWAYS taking before and after images. How many times have you created a beautiful set of lashes and thought ‘Wow that’s such a transformation – why didn’t I take an image before I started lashing?!’ Even if you don’t intend on using the before pictures, the transformation may take you by surprise, so it’s always good to be on the safe side. Before and after images are also great for treatments such as GDL as they really help to showcase the transformations to your clients.

2

Shoot up close. Don’t disregard a shot of both eyes, but an up-close image of one eye means you can see all the individual lashes and fans that you have placed. Other lash artists and clients love to see the lashes up close, and it showcases your precision and skill. Close up images often get a lot more engagement on social media, so don’t be scared to ask your client if you can get in close to get them angles. Keep the waterline visible. This is crucial in any images taken with the eye open, as it shows other lash artists and your clients that you obey the safety distance and is another great example of your accuracy and talent. To take photos at these angles you will often have to take the image looking up at the lashes – but always make sure you’re close enough to the lashes so that you don’t accidentally take a picture looking up your client’s nose (you’ll be surprised how often this happens!) Try different angles. Sometimes, a close-up of a closed eye from an aerial view looking at all those beautifully positioned fans can display just how perfect your placement is - so don’t be afraid to try something different.

3

Be the centre of attention

42 Business

Backgrounds are crucial to getting the perfect shot! If you’re taking a shot far away of both eyes, make sure you have a plain background or one that is on brand. For example, if your salon logo is purple and black, then it would be appropriate to have a purple and black design in the background, but not to have another client having their lashes done or your salons kitchen. Many lash artists forget that if you’re doing a close-up shot, there is still a background – your clients face. Make sure all under-eye pads, micropore tape, and any loose lashes that may have fallen on the face are removed so you have a completely blank canvas around the eyes. If you’ve removed make up around the eye, blend it so it doesn’t take the attention away from the lashes. The same rule can be applied to any obvious stray hairs in eyebrows that could be quickly plucked, as this will keep the focus on the lashes.

#NoFilter

We know that not every picture you take will be picture-perfect, and that is why editing apps can be so useful. There are many editing apps that are free for you to download that can correct those imperfections you may not have seen whilst taking the pictures. These apps have many uses for perfecting lash images, whether this be to smooth out a stray eyebrow hair, lightly airbrush the skin around the eyes or to brighten the white of the eye where it may have been slightly pink from adhesive fumes. There are two rules we always live by with editing and that is to; never over-edit any images, and never edit the lashes themselves. These are so important as editing apps should only be used to remove tiny imperfections, not change your work completely.

through these apps too, this is completely understandable and an effective way to brand your pictures. In doing this we would always recommend making your watermarks small, and for them to not cover any part of the lashes or eye, but to put them in the corner so they don’t become a distraction to your work. We hope these photography tips are helpful for any lash artist looking to up their game on social media. We know how busy lash artists can be, so by following these tips, you won’t have to spend ages photographing each client as you’ll know exactly how to take photos like a pro. Do you have any tips for lash photography? Let us know! Follow us instagram eyelashemporium

Ask the expert Q: What temperature and humidity is your treatment room? A: Check the recommendations for the adhesive that you use. If humidity is too low or too high it will affect retention. Using a humidifier in the dry winter or a dehumidifier in overly humid environments may be necessary. Q: Do you work around hair colour? A: Ammonia and other chemicals in hair colour can polymerize Cyanoacrylate. Work as far away from hair chemicals as possible and use a VOC air purifier to remove fumes. Q: How fresh is your adhesive? A: After opening, adhesive must be replaced after 6 weeks. Q: How are you caring for your bottle once it’s open? A: Your bottle should be stored in its pouch or a mason jar away from heat and sunlight with silica packet or rice to absorb moisture in the air. Squeeze bottle slightly and wipe excess adhesive from tip after dispensing to keep clean. You must shake for 1 minute before the first use if adhesive has been sitting overnight.

44 Business

Q: Do you recap the bottle in between each use? A: Cap must be on and tight in between each use. Q: Are you doing a proper cleansing prior to application? A: The entire eye area must be properly cleansed with lash cleanser to remove makeup, oil, and skin from the follicles. This will ensure the best bond. Q: After you dip the extension into the adhesive how quickly are you placing it onto the natural lash? A: Most adhesives are quick set so you only have 1-2 seconds before it starts to cure. Even if you wait 4 seconds this will affect retention. Have your lash isolated prior to dipping so you can place extensions quicker. Q: Are you getting a solid bond at the base of the extension? A: Natural lashes may be crooked, still apply extensions securely at the base facing forward. If there isn’t a sold bond at the base the lashes will pop off very easily, especially when brushed. Follow us GLOBE beautiquenbpt.com

Q: Are you using primer? A: Primer should only be used if a client is extremely oily. Using primer on a dry skin client will cause the lashes to become brittle and cause poor retention. Cleansing prior is a better option for every client. Q: Do you use a Nano mister after application? A: Using a Nano mister is great but you must wait 2 minutes after the last lash is placed to introduce the moisture. If you introduce it too soon it will shock polymerize the adhesive leaving cracks in the bond that will cause poor retention. Use the mister at a bit of a distance rather than close up to avoid over wetting. Q: Are you mixing together old and new adhesive? A: Make sure when you are dispensing your adhesive you are placing the new drop away from the older, cured drop that is currently on your workspace. This is also good reason to avoid using a glue ring. Q: Do you adjust the lashes after placement? A: If you try to place a lash more than once this will affect the adhesive bond, similar to sticking and re-sticking a Bandaid. Make sure you have proper isolation then place the lash and resist the urge to adjust after placement. Don’t rush by dropping lashes into place, be mindful and hold for a moment to secure.

Q: Do you find yourself combing through the lashes often during application? A: Avoid continual rearranging or combing through the lashes before they have completely set. This can lift the bases and also cause poor retention. Q: are you picking the Lash up near the tip or near the base? A: A simple adjustment by picking up the lash a little closer to the base will give you a lot more stability and control when placing your lash. Q: Do you talk to your clients about their home care routine? A: Lashes need to be cleansed on a daily basis. Natural oils on the skin can break down the adhesive bond. Suggest that clients use an approved lash cleanser and not use water proof or oil based products.
