WHY DOES GOOD HAIR MAKE US FEEL BETTER?

By Scott Ade

“Working your job, while working on your mental health, while working on your relationships, while working on physical health, while working on your family, while working on sleep habits, while working on self-care, while working on exercise, while working on personal goals while working”

I think this perfectly sums up modern life. Whether we like it or not, I think we can all agree on two prominent factors of modern life: firstly, our image seems to hold greater importance than ever before. Secondly, we seem to have less time than ever before.

Clearly, investing in yourself - and in good hair - helps with both of these problems. Investing in good hair gives you the best chance of looking and feeling like the best possible version of yourself. When our hair is not looking its best, it has a big, negative impact on the way we feel - just ask anyone who’s had a bad haircut or has suffered a trauma which had affected their hair! No amount of makeup or fancy clothes can fix that. Your hair is always there. Front and centre. One of the first things anyone will notice about you is your hair. If it’s not right you feel that.

You have to fight your hair in the mornings. Struggling to style it in such a way that it looks good - even if it is just for a brief moment. But the fight can be frustrating, time consuming and ultimately futile.

As an industry, hairdressing is said to be recession-proof (I’m not sure that’s 100% true and I’d rather not find out), but when people look at how and where they can save money, their hair is often one of the very last things people are willing to give up. It’s one of the few things that make us feel instantly so much better. Eating out, takeaway food and buying clothes just don’t seem to have the same rejuvenating effect.

According to Google, searches for “self-help” have more than quadrupled in the last five years. And for good reason! People are realising that self-care is taking the steps to tend to our physical and emotional health needs to the best of our ability. It helps us cope better with daily stressors: work stress and the stress of trying to keep up with daily life which technology has hastened more than ever. Having good hair massively improves your self confidence and self esteem. This helps make you feel ready to take on the day and subconsciously empowered.
