Dear RunMinnesota Readers, Fall is upon us! How did the summer slip away so quickly? For most runners the silver lining to the return of cooler temps is more pleasant running weather. For many runners, fall means that it is time to run that goal race we’ve been training for all year. And, if you’re like me, you’re not even waiting for the euphoria of the fall race to pass before you’re already starting to plot your next race in the spring! Spring marathons: they sound like such a great idea when you sign up for them the previous fall. I know what you’re thinking, “TCM was so great and I can’t wait to run another one! Grandma’s Marathon here I come!” or “I know I’ll need that extra motivation to stay in shape over the winter so I better sign up for the Minnetonka Half Marathon.” To help you train for that spring race (and get you through some cold winter runs) MDRA will once again be offering the Spring Marathon and Half Training Program, beginning in February. I have had the pleasure of coaching the training program for the last three years. This past year we had over 115 runners join us (a record), training and running anywhere from a 2:40 marathon on up to six hours and beyond. We have a really unique program in that we cater to so many abilities and levels of experience. Our program is also quite affordable for the services provided. In fact, we haven’t had a price increase in a full decade. But inflation and increased resources needed for the program have resulted in our program barely breaking even and even occasionally posting losses in recent years. To maintain this program, we are increasing the cost of the marathon training programs (spring AND fall) to $125 ($150 for non-members). This $25 increase actually is less than inflation since our last price increase, and places the cost of our program well below most comparable marathon training programs. We are committed to offering the best coaching and value in distance training around. MDRA is a non-profit organization committed to promoting the sport of distance running, and we feel strongly that providing affordable training programs is essential to broadening the running community. I look forward to running with you next spring as together we strive to achieve our running goals!

Team USA Minnesota Adds Three Athletes to the Training Group Three up-and-coming distance runners and recent college graduates – Eric Finan, Travis Burkstrand and Dani Stack - joined Team USA Minnesota in September. Formed in 2001, the purpose of the training center, which is based in the Twin Cities, is to improve the competitiveness of post-collegiate American distance running and to develop Olympians. Finan is from Ohio where he was a standout prep athlete in cross country and track at New Richmond High School. At the University of Cincinnati, the twotime All American set school records in the 3000m, 5000m and 10,000m and was the Big East Cross Country Champion and the Big East 5000m Champion. He was 25th at the 2011 NCAA Cross Country Championships and 10th in the 5000m at the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Championships. He has a B.A. in mechanical engineering and an MBA. He made his debut on the roads at the 2013 USA Half Marathon Championships with a time of 1:04:42. Burkstrand is a 2008 graduate of Eastview High School where he was a four-time all-state performer in cross country and track. The Apple Valley native also lettered in

hockey during his prep career. At the University of Minnesota, he was a four-time All American, a six-time Big Ten Championship medalist, a four time school record holder, and a six-time Drake Relays Champion. His specialties were the 800 meters (a best of 1:47.56) and relay teams including the 4x800m and the DMR. In addition to his track accomplishments, he was a two-year member of the men’s cross country team. He expects to receive his M.A. in graphic design from the U in 2014. A native Minnesotan who grew up in Mankato, Stack competed at Loyola Catholic High School where she holds the school record in the 800 and 1600 meters. In her senior year she placed fourth in both the 1600m and 3200m at the Class A Minnesota State Track & Field meet and qualified for the Minnesota State Class A Cross Country meet three times. At Iowa State University, she was a two-time All American and nine-time All-Big 12 competitor in track and cross country. She twice competed in the 10,000m (best of 32:51) at the NCAA Outdoor Championships and was a member of two cross country teams that competed at the NCAA Cross Country Championships. She has a B.A. in dietetics and journalism.

Trail Advocacy The MDRA reacts to a proposal to pave the Minnesota River Bottoms trails. The MDRA occasionally dips into issues pertaining to the bigger picture of running. One recent issue that was brought to the attention of the advocacy committee was the proposed paving of the Minnesota River Bottoms trails. MDRA President Michael Iserman signed off on the below letter on behalf of the MDRA Board. MDRA member Evan Roberts shared in the letter preparation efforts. The Board was in full support of maintaining natural trail surfaces in this popular running area. The letter was sent to officials at the DNR, City of Bloomington and the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge Area. To Whom It May Concern, We are writing on behalf of the Minnesota Distance Running Association (MDRA) about current proposals to construct new trails in the Minnesota River Valley in the area commonly known as the "Minnesota River Bottoms." MDRA represents over 2,300 members, and is the largest and oldest distance running organization in the state of Minnesota, promoting the sport of running for over 50 years. Many of our members are regular users of the current natural surface trails in the Minnesota River Bottoms area, within the city of Bloomington and on parts of the trail further east and west. MDRA supports improved public access to the Minnesota River Bottoms area, including 1) the construction of a new crossing in the area of the old Cedar Avenue Bridge which is currently closed, and 2) better off-road bike and pedestrian paths to access the area from the neighborhoods of Bloomington. However, MDRA is concerned with proposals to replace the current natural surface trails in the River Bottoms area. Our members enjoy the opportunity to run on an unpaved surface in this scenic wilderness, on a trail that has minimal impact on the environment. Many of our members enjoy the River Bottoms because they feel remote and wild, while still being very close to an urban area. A paved or "improved surface" trail would change this aspect of the area. While the current trail is narrow it is enjoyed by multiple recreational users with few conflicts. There is no compelling need to create a larger trail in the area, when the current trail serves the interest of many users. A DNR survey of users in 2003 noted that 95% of current users were opposed to a paved or limestone trail. A 2010 survey of MDRA members indicated that having soft surfaces to run on was the mostvalued attribute of Minnesota trails, beating out hard running surfaces (8th-most valued attribute) and even water fountains! Moreover, we believe that a paved or limestone trail in this area would be difficult and expensive to maintain. The River Bottoms are part of a floodplain, and experience significant periods of flooding in most years. Parks in the Twin Cities metro which have paved trails in a floodplain, such as Crosby Farm in Saint Paul, require additional maintenance to clear river sediment and debris off the trail, and the paved surface can quickly deteriorate in flood conditions.

ON THE RUN

What Every Runner Needs

W

Favorite Running Shoe There’s no getting around the fact that our feet take a beating when it comes to running. Our shoes are the single point of contact we have with the ground below, so it’s important that you have a favorite model. If you’ve been running longer than six months, you probably know that shoe manufacturers like to discontinue your favorite model. Therefore, it doesn’t hurt to have a backup shoe that can easily become your favorite, if or when that happens. If you enjoy running on the trails or racing, you may want to have favorites for those specific types of running, too.

Favorite Running Store Where are you going to buy your favorite running shoes? From your favorite local running store, of course. Preferably this is one of the many locally owned specialty stores throughout the state (see

9

Austin-Jarrow 917 W. Central Entrance Duluth Duluth Running Company 1026 E. Superior St. Duluth

BY CHAD AUSTIN hen it comes to running, I’m pretty much a minimalist. No, I’m not talking about the latest shoe craze. I’m talking about all the other running stuff. Sure, I’ve had my heart rate monitor and compression sock phases. And I still like to check my splits with a GPS watch from time to time. But mostly I’m happy just throwing on a pair of shorts and lacing up some shoes before heading out the door for my run. This got me thinking about the key things that every runner needs. Here’s the list I came up with.

Local Running Specialty Stores

sidebar). Granted, you could probably save a few bucks by shopping online or at some big box store; however, the locally owned running shops are the life blood of the sport in our state. Not only do they sell top of the line shoes, apparel, gear, and much more; they often host group runs and free clinics, such as injury assessments and gait analysis, and they sponsor many of the local races.

Shoe Guru What is a shoe guru, you ask? It’s a staff member from one of the specialty stores mentioned above that knows exactly what kind of shoe is right for you. This one can be a little more difficult to find, but if you visit one of the specialty stores, and talk openly with the experienced staff members, your chances of finding a shoe guru increase dramatically. For me, Kurt Decker at TC Running Company knows exactly what shoes work for me. So much so that I’ve had times where I’ve simply held up a pair of shoes and he’s said, “Oh, you’ll like those.”

Favorite Training Routes This one is definitely plural. You are going to want a variety of favorites when it comes to where you run, depending on things like distance, terrain and type of workout. There’s no doubt that running is a great way to discover new places; however, I find that runs where I just wander aimlessly seem to take forever. So I like to have a few different loops for the distances that I run most often.

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2013

Training Partner or Group Sure, you can run solo all the time, but often running is best shared with others. Similar to training routes, you may want more than one group of training partners. Perhaps you have a fast group of friends that help you push the pace, or a slower group that you like to run with on your recovery days or maybe a different set of friends that like to run trails once a week. As you increase your number of running partners and spend more and more time together, you’ll realize that, besides your family, no one knows you better than those that you run with.

Favorite Race Of course, you can still be a runner without racing. However, many people find that having races on the horizon motivates them to get out the door and train. As you race more and more, you’ll start to develop a sense of what you like in a race. Perhaps it supports a certain charity, it’s flat and fast, it’s low-key or there’s a cool shirt. The number of reasons to like a race could equal the number of runners. My favorite race is Grandma’s Marathon. Not only is there the nostalgia factor from watching my dad run the race when I was a kid, but I’ve also developed my own traditions that stretch from Friday night to Sunday morning, and include my training. No matter what the latest running craze happens to be, I know I can always count on these “must haves” when it comes to my running.

RUNNING STREAKS

Streak Running in Minnesota BY STEVE DEBOER All of us do some things on a daily basis, such as breathing. Many of us do things regularly to maintain or improve our health. I dare say many of those reading this magazine put running in this category. And then there are Streakers. The US Running Streak Association (USRSA) was formed in 2000 to help support and encourage this positive addiction. On their web site, runeveryday.com, you will find a list of almost 400 individuals who currently have been running at least one mile for 365 days or longer. There are another 270 “retired streaks, though some runners have multiple streaks. The organization has now expanded worldwide and is known as Streak Runners International (SRI).

Daily runs are not a new thing. Runners like to trace their origins to the ancient Greeks, but there is no documentation that Pheidippides, the fifth century B.C. marathoner ran daily, so we must fast forward to 1953, when 1952 Olympian, Ted Corbitt, began his first running streak. His son, Gary, is going through his running logs and has verified he ran daily from December 1, 1953 until July 25, 1968, when he had an encounter with a dog. The most well known daily runner is Ron Hill, who began his

streak December 1964 and it will reach 49 years at the end of this year. There have been a few times he ran less than one mile so not all of his streak would qualify for listing if he does decide to certify it. At this time, not all runners have been chased down who might have been streaking in the early 1960s, but Bruce Mortenson ran every day for six months, starting January 1965, and Amby Burfoot ran daily about two years from 1966 to 1968, the year he won the Boston Marathon. The first person to put together a list of streak runners was George Hancock, in 1994, after contacting running clubs throughout the United States. That list included 50 names, including one woman, Margaret Blackstock, of Georgia, who began running daily on September 9, 1979. Bob Ray, of Maryland, had the longest streak at the time, which began April 4, 1967. No Minnesotans were on that list, but I learned of the effort and got my name on the 1998 update. By then, Californian Mark Covert, whose streak began July 23, 1968, was also on the list. When the USRSA put out its first newsletter in 2001, there were six Minnesotans on the list: Steve DeBoer, Steve Gathje, Pat Foley, Brian Short, Paul Christian, and Roger Carlson. The latter four had daily streaks of 20 to 30 years before injury or surgery ended them. They all have gone on to streak again. Bruce Mortenson, living in Rochester at the time, started running daily again in January 1970, a streak that lasted over two years. Steve DeBoer began in July 1970, brother Dave in August 1972 and Steve Gathje in September 1972. This meant Minnesota was the first state to have related streakers as well as the first with two named Steve. Minnesota was also the first state to have three, four, six, and seven active streak run-

ners. Then California runners got more streak crazy, and that state was first to have 10 with active streaks of at least six months in April of 1980 and has had the largest contingent ever since. Minnesota was the second state to reach 10 in June 1981. By 1979, there were five actively streaking in St. Paul (the most ever by a city at that time). Since then Rochester has had six active streak runners at once a few times and currently has five and half, since Paul Christian is over eight months into his third running streak. Minnesota claimed the first 50 year old in the country, Wendell DeBoer, and had their first woman running daily, Julie Maxwell, in 1978. Julie didn’t register her streak until 2008, but her 33 year streak, before breaking her ankle, is the longest ever by a woman. Wendell then went on to be the first 60 and 80 year old running daily in 1984 and 2009. In the sidebar is a list of residents identified that have run daily at least one year, though not all of them have submitted their streak information to the USRSA. The only state with more is California, with 63, and they have eight times as many people (see table on following page). Though Minnesota has not had the largest number from one state since the 1970s, it has an impressive history of having the highest rate for its population. After John Magnuson began running daily in 1977, Minnesota claimed 1.53 streakers per million residents, the highest up to that time. Except for a few years when Steve DeBoer lived in South Dakota (1982 to 1984 and 1986 to 1987), Minnesota remained in the lead until 2010. Steve DeBoer and Steve Morrow both lived in South Dakota during those years, putting that state on top for almost three years. DeBoer moved back to Minnesota in 1987 and brought the highest rate back with him. Morrow then moved to Minnesota in 1988 and South Dakota has not had a streak runner since. In 1991, Minnesota reached a rate of 3.89 daily runners per million. In comparison, the second

highest in the 1990s was Maryland, with 2.93 per million, the closest any other state had gotten to the 3.0 mark until just recently. Minnesota kept their rate at about three or higher until 2010. From November 2009 to June 2010, there was a rapid spread of streakends throughout the state. In November and December, Brad Kautz (H1N1 virus) and Scott Fodstad (surgery) broke their streaks, followed by Wendell DeBoer in February (compression fracture in back), Pat Foley in March (colon

cancer surgery), Brian Short (knee surgery) and Steve Morrow (family emergency) in May. This left Minnesota with only 10 runners doing it daily (lowest number since 1983), having fallen to second place for the first time since 1987, behind Montana (a rate of 1.88 per million, compared to 2.01 per million for Montana with two active streakers). But Minnesotans are a hardy bunch and the state made an impressive resurgence. Roger Carlson passed 12 months of a second

streak on June 5, 2013, at age 65. So, after eight days in second place, Minnesota was back on top. Jeff Judd, Paul Christian, Paul Case and Christopher Kartschoke made it to the year mark later that year, to put the rate back up to 2.73. Since then, seven streaks have ended but 18 have been added, six so far in 2013, making Minnesota the only state with a rate of over four per million at the end of 2012 and 5.21 per million in July 2013 with 28 active daily runners (and two more who could reach the

year mark in December). For comparison, the next four highest rates are Washington DC (3.32), Vermont (3.17), Delaware (2.22), and Massachusetts (1.98). It should be noted all but Massachusetts have only two streakers but their populations are under one million. California has the most (42) but their rate is just over one per million. Following second place Minnesota, number wise, are Texas (24) and Florida (23). Of course, the numbers are always changing, but in the entire country, as of April 2013, there were 321 active plus 127 retired men (448 total) and 63 active plus 31 retired women (94 total), which means 542 individuals had registered running streaks with the USRSA. In the course of the 60 year history of verified streak running in this country, there have been only three men and three women who have held the longest streak position. With Mark Covert’s recent “retirement” due to a midfoot collapse, Steve DeBoer and Steve Gathje have now moved up to the third and seventh places. Jon Sutherland, Covert’s teammate in college, is the new male leader, having run daily for over 44 years: Of the 51 listed, 10 have lived in Rochester, nine in St. Paul and five in Minneapolis. Of the 30 who ran daily before 2006, 19 have had multiple streaks and six are still on their first one. It seems Minnesota has always had an excessive number of streakers named Steve. There have been six of them here (Steve Moosbrugger is no longer active), and only nine others in the entire country (four no longer active). This means Minnesota has 50 percent of all active Steves! In some cases, this appears to be a genetic disorder. The largest outbreak among one family is in the state of Washington, where Jim Pearson, brother Don, and Jim’s children Joel, Hopper, and Paige have all been caught streaking. With Klare Case’s streak reaching one year this past June, Minnesota is now the only state that has two families that have had three streak runners: the DeBoers and the

Cases (Klare is Paul’s daughter and Sherry’s niece). The two Gilmans (Al and son Pete) give the state three families that have run daily. The youngest to go streaking are Steve DeBoer (1970) and Anna French (2012) at age 15 and Dave DeBoer (1972) at age 16. The oldest are Wendell DeBoer (age 85 in 2010), Roger Carlson and Bruce Mortenson (who, respectively, will turn 70 in October and December of this year). Streak running isn’t for everyone, but it is one way to push your training up another notch. If you or someone you know is doing or has done the daily thing, contact Steve DeBoer with the details, so you can be identified among this obsessed, I mean healthily focused, group.

TRAINING

Marathon Recovery, …or Lack of.

Are you fully recovering from your race efforts? BY KRISTY POPP

I

n the past weeks I’ve spent an incredible amount of time thinking about the human body. I’m teaching a college level exercise physiology course this fall and in doing so, have been reminded of our many intricacies. It’s easy to forget that while many of the processes of the body happen without our thinking, we actually have the ability to manipulate how our body responds and functions. For example, we can improve our immunity through diet, sleep, exercise and stress management. We can strengthen our bones through activities with relatively high ground reaction forces. We can alter our cognitive function through exercise. On the flip side, despite our best efforts, recovery from strenuous exercise can take longer than we’d like. If we aren’t careful our body may not be able to entirely recover. For fall marathoners, this becomes particularly important after a

15

summer filled with races and weekend long runs. It may be difficult to accurately gauge recovery, resist from pushing too hard during training or even entering too many races in a season, but it’s important to understand the full effect of your yearly training and racing calendar. Competitive distance running is one of the most demanding physical activities on the human body. While I am always one to celebrate the feats we can accomplish through training, I am also of the “eyes wide open” mindset. Know the potential perks and ramifications of what you’ve signed up for. Be smart about it: in training, in competition and in recovery. It takes between 30,000 and 50,000 steps to complete a marathon. With each foot strike, the ground reaction forces absorbed by your body are up to three to four times your body weight. Every step, certain muscles (calves and quads) undergo

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2013

muscle lengthening and contraction simultaneously. This is an eccentric contraction. While these contractions require fewer muscle fibers, less oxygen and less energy than concentric contractions, the force of eccentric contractions on the acting muscle fibers is roughly double. This force is increased further when running downhill. I won’t get too technical, but research addressing recovery highlights the possible short and long term impact that running has on our muscles. Studies measuring serum levels of an enzyme called creatine kinase have given us insight on post race muscle damage. A study published in the Yale Journal of Biology and Medicine took enzyme measurements of marathoners pre race as well as 24 hours and 28 days post race. Levels of creatine kinase were highest 24 hours after the race, indicating muscle damage. Interestingly, the highest levels of this enzyme were found in participants who ran the

fastest, suggesting greater damage in those athletes relative to athletes who ran slower. Muscle biopsies to determine muscle cell damage have been done in numerous marathon studies and findings are fairly consistent. Evidence of muscle damage is highest one to three days after the race. Fortunately, signs of muscle repair are apparent within seven days and increase for eight to ten weeks. In younger and more novice runners, muscle damage is typically repaired in ten to twelve weeks. However, in veteran runners, areas of fibrosis (excess connective tissue or scar tissue) are present both pre and post race, suggesting incomplete repair. The continual breakdown and regeneration of muscle that occurs through chronic and repetitive eccentric loading is the likely cause of this permanent muscle damage.

continued on page 17

While fatigue is inevitable after a long or ultra distance race, you have the ability to influence recovery and avoid or prolong permanent muscle damage. I’ve picked out five simple tips that can be done on your own to help speed recovery. The first four may help you to feel better in the short term, but the fifth suggestion will help you long term. In my opinion it is most overlooked and underestimated.

Rehydrate The first priority after your race should be to correct dehydration and sodium loss that occurred during the race. These demands will be different depending on the fluid/nutrition you took in during the race. During the first 30 minutes, sports drinks are ideal. After that, stick to water and rely on food to replace glycogen stores. Let thirst be your guide in rehydrating. More isn’t always better!

Refuel While your appetite may be suppressed after a marathon it’s important to get calories in. Unfortunately, that doesn’t mean junk! Plan ahead and try to get some carbohydrates and protein in as soon as you’re able. Post race beer or pizza are fine, but focus on getting your body balanced meals. Twenty four to 48 hours after a marathon is the most critical time to enhance recovery through diet.

Ice Bath They aren’t great for post-race relaxing, but ice baths help reduce inflammation and may reduce soreness. Sooner is better, even if that means with your pre-packed turkey sandwich in hand (pizza and beer if you must). Ice baths should last around 15-20 minutes.

Stay Active Try a walk or light bike ride the evening of your marathon. Afterwards or on its own, light stretching can be useful. I suggest active isolated stretching. Phil Wharton has some great articles and videos on this method. www.whartonhealth.com.

REST Most runners cringe at the thought of taking time off, losing hard earned fitness and the potential of putting on extra weight. The biggest favor you can do for the longevity of your running career is allowing yourself to fully recover. This can mean an extended break or if you have a break planned later in your training year, slowly progress back to training. During the first week, give yourself permission not to run. Bike or swim if you must workout. Soon, you should start to feel better mentally, and that is the time to analyze your race in terms of why it did or didn’t go well. If it didn’t, was your training appropriate? Did you

17

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2013

race too much in the past year? Did you start too fast? Did you properly fuel? Learn from every race. During week two try to limit yourself to about 50 percent of the volume you were doing prior to taper. If you ran six days a week, run three relaxed runs. You can get back up to your normal number of runs per week by the third week but keep the volume and intensity low. Finally, if recovery is going well from both a mental and physical stand point, add some light fartlek work back into your running and slowly progress to normal training from there. If you aren’t excited to start again, you likely could use additional downtime. This time frame doesn’t apply to shorter distance races, but the overall concept of fully recovering and taking time off is important for racers of all distances. These suggestions are not novel or new. I realize there are many possible recovery enhancing options that I didn’t mention such as foam rolling, wearing compression socks, massage and Normatec. At the end of the day, it’s about understanding your limits and the manner in which you approach your recovery that will make the difference. Celebrate your body and what you’ve accomplished but respect the miles and damage you’ve subjected it to. The career of an elite distance runner, especially a marathoner, is rarely long. In fact, at the highest level, most elites are able to run only a few fast marathons before their performance inevitably begins to drop. Even though it can be remarkably resilient and trained to accomplish seemingly impossible things, the human body is fragile. We now have strong evidence suggesting athletes have a finite capacity to adapt to intensive training and competition. Some of us have a larger capacity than others, but we all have a limit. If you are careful, you can spread that adaptation out over a long career, but those who race too often and train too hard, especially in a fatigued state, will eventually pay the price. So whether you’re an elite or experiencing distance running for the first time, before you walk past the ice bath without a glance to sign up for your next race while downing your post race beer, at least give it a second thought. Your body will thank you for it later.

The Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon

Reality Show The ďŹ nal push to marathon day BY CANDY PATRIN

It is down to the last few weeks of training for the three runners who agreed to share their Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon (TCM) experiences with RunMinnesota. Here is what the trio has to say about their training and goals for race day.

The MTCM

Reality Show

Tom Huberty

AGE: 61 | MINNEAPOLIS

Huberty has been gradually increasing his mileage as he enters the home stretch before TCM. He has continued with his latest running streak, even with a busy travel schedule. In September, Huberty will do the Air Force Marathon at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio. He will be on a team with his cousins, and run in honor of their uncle, Senior Master Sergeant Larry Murtaugh, a 20 year Air Force veteran who died of heart disease last year. Huberty reports one new development in his TCM preparation. He has scheduled a series of chiropractic appointments to get his body better aligned and more flexible. Those treatments will also target an old hamstring strain from a few years ago. As for TCM, “The real goal is to get to St. Paul as fast as the summer training will take me,” says Huberty. “In my mind I can string together some 11:00 minute miles. The more I can put together, the closer to five hours I will finish.”

Kevin Rassier

AGE: 54 | MAPLE GROVE

Rassier has been running with the Fall MDRA marathon training class, completing sessions to improve endurance, strength and get comfortable with his race pace. His son, Paul, who will be doing his first marathon at TCM, is keeping up with his training, too, although they are still looking for some time to get in a run together. For his 99th marathon, Rassier registered for the Tupelo Marathon in Tupelo, Miss., which takes place over Labor Day weekend. He plans to make that 26.2 miler a training run to keep his legs fresh for TCM, especially since the weather will most likely be very hot. This year is the 30th anniversary of the Tupelo Marathon. A bit of a quirky race, the finisher medals display a skull and crossbones and the race theme is “trample the dead, hurdle the weak.” While Rassier does not think he will set a PR (personal record) at TCM, he does have a time in mind. “My goal for TCM will be to run as fast or faster than my average finish for my previous 98 marathons,” says Rassier.

Kate Williamson

AGE: 36 | MINNEAPOLIS

Williamson has relied on her running to stay grounded and think more clearly about wedding decisions. Although the summer has been busy with social events and other wedding specific activities, Williamson says she would not change her decision to run TCM two weeks before her wedding. The only thing she might do differently is to forget about a PR at TCM, which was one of her thoughts earlier in the summer. Williamson’s fiancé, Graeme Webster, is also running TCM this year. It will be the first time that they have done a marathon together. Although the couple typically runs at different paces, they are committed to helping each other maintain a regular training schedule. At TCM, Williamson’s goal is to finish the race injury free, smiling and to share her accomplishment with her students. “I am not the most gifted runner by any means, but I don’t run because I am going to win, I run because it feels good to have accomplished a goal and, in the end, 26.2 miles is 26.2 miles no matter how long it takes you,” says Williamson.

Secretary’s Report: The minutes of the May 13 meeting were approved. Treasurer’s Report: Treasurer Josh Jacobson reported declining ad revenue, which is not expected to improve through YE 2013. This will create a budget deficit that will be addressed by reviewing current revenue opportunities.

Treasurer’s Report: Treasurer Josh Jacobson reported program expenses specifically and total club expenses overall are currently favorable to budget, resulting in positive YTD revenue. Ad revenue continues negative to budget. Balance sheet is currently cash positive.

Membership is also trending slightly behind projection, due to an unusually high volume of one-year memberships in 2012 for single events (e.g. participation in a running class) and the decreased participation in the 2013 MN Challenge v. 2012. RunMinnesota: The May/June issue was mailed on June 4. Work has begun on the July/August issue, which will center on Grandma’s Marathon and the USA Half Marathon Championships. Volunteers: Thanks to everyone who helped at the MDRA spring races. Next up: the Minnehaha Fun Runs every Wednesday in July. We need someone to oversee the July 17th event as race director Rob Lundquist will be out of town. These events are small with 10-20 runners, easy to manage, and a great way to participate in racing behind-the-scenes. Anyone interested in volunteering at either the Minnehaha Fun Runs or the Como Park Relays (every Wednesday in August) should contact Heidi Miler at hmiler@hotmail.com

COMMITTEE REPORTS Advocacy: The Advocacy Committee has undertaken to research alternative offerings to MDRA’s highly popular Dome Running program. The Dome is scheduled to be razed in early 2014. Administration: The Advocacy Committee has undertaken to research alternative offerings to MDRA’s highly popular Dome Running program. The Dome is scheduled to be razed in early 2014. Programs: In its ongoing mission to provide a superior experience to participants in its training programs, the MDRA board reviewed local running programs’ schedules, services, coaching, amenities, and expense. MDRA’s programs were found to be at minimum comparable (fees, schedules) and in most areas, arguably excellent (coaching, services, amenities). Seeking further improvement, it was decided to implement post-program surveys to participants which will be reviewed by coaches and the board. Promotions: In the first 30 days support for MDRA’s online store resulted in significant sales of MDRA vintage style gear. This clothing line will also be available for sale at the MDRA booth at Grandma’s Marathon Expo. Race: The MDRA 15K (Sunday August 11, 2013), has been moved from Edina to Crosby Park for 2013, resulting in a $3000 expense reduction as police officers will not be needed to control intersections. MDRA is proud and grateful to work with several new race directors during the 2013 season for the Lake Johanna, Hopkins, Ron Daws, and Moms Day 5K races. New Business: July Board meeting rescheduled from July 8 to July 22. Old Business: The discussion on MDRA branding and the state of the current logo will take place at the July 22 meeting. Noelle Frost will send out a topic agenda.

In 2012 MDRA membership received a significant boost through its partnership with the Explore Minnesota Challenge. We partnered with that program again in 2013, but this year’s participation (in the Explore MN Challenge) is approximately half its 2012 level and not all those members renewed, resulting in a drop this month in our overall membership numbers.

COMMITTEE REPORTS Advocacy: The City of Bloomington is reviewing a request from The Friends of the Minnesota Valley’s Trail Advocacy Group and the Bloomington Geezer Squad to pave a significant segment of the Minnesota Valley Recreational Trail, specifically the section known as the River Bottoms which runs from Cedar Avenue to Bloomington Ferry. In a 2010 survey of our 2300+ members, MDRA runners indicated that their number one desired trail "amenity" was unpaved trails. The MDRA board voted unanimously to state its support in leaving these trails unpaved, board President Michael Iserman has signed off on a letter written by MDRA member Evan Roberts to the City of Bloomington outlining MDRA’s position. A copy of this letter will be printed in the July/August issue of RunMN. Administration: There is currently a two-year board position available. Interested parties are welcome to check out the opportunity by attending a board meeting as guest; simply contact any MDRA board member or Heidi Keller-Miler. Programs: Fall Marathon Training Program is experiencing record registration, likely due to the program’s ongoing commitment to provide quality coaching. The Thursday Track and Trails program, structured to provide a shining workout for runners of all paces, is underway and growing. MDRA was delighted to announce that despite the Metrodome’s 2014 destruction we will host an abbreviated season of its Dome Running program, from November 5 through December 27. In conclusion of its review of local running programs, its own marathon and half marathon training programs, and an extended, highly spirited discussion, the motion was raised and passed to increase the 2014 programs fee by $25. Program fees have remained unchanged since 2007. Race: Each Wednesday evening in August, MDRA hosts the Como Park Cross Country Relays. Each week is a different distance, and kids’ races are held at 6:30. There are many opportunities for volunteers to help with the races, contact Heidi Miler at hmiler@hotmail.com. We are also looking for a race director for the MDRA Moms 5K. To date, we have had 15 rentals of our race equipment, approximately double our 2012 rentals. USATF: Upcoming races: August 11, the 15K Championship at Crosby Park in St Paul. August 31, the River Bottoms Run (10 mile and 5K) along the St. Paul side of the Mississippi River starting in Mendota across the street from Lucky's 13. September 4 – October 18, the Salomon Autumn Trail Series (four 5Ks).
