Whether you want to be competitive, set to conquer a personal best, have a chance at winning $1,000 or simply enjoy the beautiful local scenery while bettering your health,

Today

this year's Festival has it all.And participants in the Aug. 21 event help support the community, as all the money raised will go towards keeping the site of the race, the Timmins Regional Athletic and Soccer Complex Complex, sustainable."I think there's something for everyone in this year's festival," said Richard Lambert-Belanger, the spokesman for annual marathon.

"The vast majority of people who've taken up running do so for reasons other than being competitive. If we focused solely on competitive runners, we'd miss out on a lot of great participants.

"Seeing young and old, athletic and non-athletic people cross the finish line with huge smiles is amazing," he p>"Some people are even crying, because they're so proud of themselves. And more and more people in the community are starting to pay attention to their own health more, and you see many more out walking and running. "We mostly want to provide a venue for people to set personal goals and achieve them, either walking or running and to have fun doing so. "We have a two-kilometre fun run, a five-kilometre run or walk, a half-marathon walk and run, which are both the same distance but leave at different times, and a relay." Those wanting to register online can do so at http://www.goldentrailsfestival. orgup until Friday, Aug. 19. Registrations will be accepted in person up until 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, the day before the race. "People should register online through the website," added Lambert-Belanger. "In the past we've given people the option of signing up online or just sending their cheques in to us, but that just turns into an administrative nightmare. We will not accept any registrations on race day at all."

There is a discount offered to those who register early . "We offered lower prices for people who confirmed with us early," Lambert-Belanger said. "The first cut-off is over, but if people register before the end of July, they'll save a bit of money." A more complete breakdown of available discounts can be found on the website. Lambert-Belanger is pleased that the event continues growing each year.

"Last year we had roughly 280 participants. We keep getting bigger and bigger each year, so hopefully that continues," he said. "Hopefully people are looking at this like a challenge and are looking forward to it. We've been successful in the past attracting a fairly competitive crowd on a very difficult course. It's a mixture of road and trail and Timmins is not known to have that much flat land." The event has attracted top Canadian road racers, athletes from Kenya, the United States and Bangladesh.
