Stlited Haven
Graduation Project
Year Completed: 2024 (16 Weeks)
Stilted Haven addresses the unique social and medical needs of the Black community in Tower Hamlets, particularly those with dementia. By offering tailored care solutions, it creates a supportive environment honoring the contributions of Black residents.
The design, inspired by the local industrial heritage and Black seamen’s contributions, emphasises resilience and community strength. Stilted Haven features interlocking timber structures and incorporates historical motifs to reflect the community’s resourcefulness and adaptability.
The project includes “third spaces” for socialising, market areas to boost local entrepreneurship, and active spaces for health and well-being. It also serves as a cultural preservation site, celebrating Black traditions. Promoting inclusivity, Stilted Haven uses water to create an inviting atmosphere. It fosters economic opportunities, cultural preservation, and a sense of belonging, encouraging all to swim, eat, and farm together.

Micro Analysis: Bethnal Green Gas Holders
A detailed micro-analysis of the site focused on historical research, specific site features, and potential architectural interventions. Gasholders served as essential chambers

Stakeholder and Programme Spacing
A holistic design approach should consider additional stakeholders and the local community’s religious makeup to inform necessary spaces and support the project’s core narrative.

Housing Concept Models.
Akin to the typology of many traditional Nigerian and African homes, the space inside the walls was often only utilised for sleeping, whereas the courtyard was where most people spent their time socialising with family members. This model aims to accomplish a similar environment, inspired by the Florey building and its utilisation of colonnades.

93 Bleinheim Park

The Pre-Application Advice Request to Saloria for constructing two new detached buildings at the rear of 93 Blenheim Park Road, South Croydon, aims to maintain the site’s architectural character. The buildings are set 15 meters back from the host property, following the Croydon Suburban Design Guide SPD2, ensuring they are not visible from Blenheim Park Road and preserving the streetscape. The sloping topography allows for a larger footprint while minimising the visual impact on neighboring properties, with submerged design elements that

The Warm Shores
Graduation Project
Year Completed: 2023 (3 Weeks)
The Warm Shores, located in Homerton, London, is a dementia respite center for the Windrush generation, their descendants, and the wider African diaspora in Hackney. The center emphasizes tactile and sound therapy, using native instruments to acknowledge the Windrush generation’s cultural contributions and their significant roles in the NHS.
The center addresses the higher rates of dementia and Alzheimer’s in the UK’s black population, which are over 20% higher than the national average. It aims to provide a safe space for the African diaspora and the Windrush generation to receive care without fear of being misunderstood.
Tactile therapy includes workshops where familiar native instruments like the Shekere are made, offering therapeutic distraction. A marketplace designed like Ridley Market helps restore a sense of autonomy and evoke memories. Sound therapy uses rainfall to create sounds reminiscent of the djembe and shekere, enhancing the therapeutic environment.
The program allows dementia patients to share their personal stories with instruments they’ve made, inspired by West African griots, preserving their identity and stimulating cognitive functions.

SITE STRATEGIES

Egocentric Navigation.
Due to cognitive decline, individuals with Alzheimer’s and dementia struggle with conventional navigation methods. As the hippocampus and basal forebrain deteriorate, allocentric navigation becomes less reliable. Therefore, this proposal focuses on egocentric navigation, which prioritises the individual’s perspective and route over objective spatial arrangements (Ritchie et al., 2018).
Sensory Theraputic Design.
Creating healing spaces in architecture requires incorporating therapeutic elements like spatial arrangement, materials, sound, and light. Evidence shows music and natural light significantly boost well-being. Designing “mood architecture” involves using research to enhance positive sensory experiences and foster emotional comfort.

Design Intervention Construction Detail
The design interventions provide ample seating, clear signage, and adaptable features, ensuring the rights and preferences of end-users with dementia. Integrating glass blocks into wooden plinths expands their view, aiding egocentric navigation and fostering cultural hubs within the enhanced workspace.

The Halfway House
[Con]temporary House Project
Year Completed: 2022 (8 weeks)
The Halfway House focuses on developing the required social networks that many newly released convicts lack when they are released into the outside world, as well as providing a haven for local gang members looking to flee their existing crisis. All these are achieved through a community-centred and place-making programme fixated on bolstering social values.
Due to a lack of professional connections and a visible résumé gap, ex-convicts may find it difficult to secure an interview with a prospective employer. For escaping gang members, the dread of being wounded and the potential damage that may befall their loved ones work as a deterrent to leaving the culture and continuing to participate in it. These issues cause rifts in the community and pave the way for The Halfway House to provide the ideal chance for placemaking.

Site Strategies.
The initial phase involved analysing the site’s prospects and constraints, justifying the selection of the precise location. The chosen site was selected for its high visibility, ensuring that end-users, particularly ex-gang members, remain in a safe and observable environment, especially given its proximity to the train station.

Last Bastion Space Project
Year Completed: 2021 (2 Weeks)
The piece on the right is my answer to the prompt “Space.” The piece, inspired by the shell shading of Deco Posters, illustrates the contrasting nature of future dwelling communities. I imagined a civilization that had to deal with rising temperatures, a more hazardous environment, and rampant pollution, based on what’s outlined in several recent climate assessments. Paying keen attention to how various socioeconomic groups may oppress or be oppressed in such circumstances.
Towers that serve as last fortifications between some civilisations and the tormented ground underneath. Pillars, still connected and dependant on a home they destroyed, hoist aloft pods packed with pockets of civilisation.

Fallen Truman
The Pop-Up Project
Year Completed: 2022 (2 Weeks)
Before starting the larger and more demanding [Con] Temporary City Project, The Fallen Truman and the Pop-Up Project as a whole served as a pilot project. It was situated on the same Shoreditch site and urged creativity to help facilitate a niche need in the surrounding context. Made to be easily assembled and dissembled, the Fallen Truman, I envisioned, as a small working part to stop the exploitation of artists of the Shoreditch area. The pavilion acts as a gallery, workshop, and auction venue to provide many artists and their pieces with the required value that is regrettably not given to them.

SOUTH ELEVATION 1:50 on A3

With initial context research done, an understanding of the rampant use of public art in Shoreditch instead of permanent structural change, such as a park or restored, affordable buildings, is a way for businesses to provide capital investments without such a costly risk. Paying an artist pennies to paint a mural on the side of a building allows investors to circumnavigate the real issues with the environment whilst undervaluing an artist’s labour and taking advantage of the correct value of the artist’s work.

SITE PLAN 1:400 on A3

CONCEPTS BUILDING
By using The Truman Brewery’s tower’s resemblance and form, they were able to profit greatly from the artwashing of Brick Lane and Shoreditch as a whole and draw attention to their antagonistic role in the Save Brick Lane Campaign.
