2014 ANNUAL REPORT

The milestone gave us a chance to reflect, an opportunity to celebrate, and the inspiration to envision a bold and bright future as we launch our fourth decade serving San Francisco’s homless youth.

In 1984, Larkin Street’s founders understood the challenges young people face when they live without a safe place to call home, and they built a foundation that has supported more than 70,000 young people working toward a brighter future off the streets. Their groundwork not only supports the success of our youth today, but also the long-term stability and growth of our organization. Those of us who are now on the frontlines owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to the visionaries who first opened Larkin Street’s doors. Thirty successful years is a profound measure of Larkin Street’s strength. From the very beginning, Larkin Street was hailed as an innovator because of our multi-service approach. That spirit of innovation, forward-thinking, and continuous improvement is still at the core of our work, and our most recent accomplishments illustrate our refusal to settle for the status quo. Highlights from the past year include: • Added an intensive college and career readiness program, The Learning Center, to our continuum of education and employment services • Launching Edward II, a 24-unit housing program in the Marina with our partner, Community Housing Partnership • Opening a new 15-bed housing program in the Haight • Growing our Castro Youth Housing Initiative for homeless youth who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer from 22 to 30 beds • Expanding the hours at Diamond Youth Shelter from overnightonly to 24 hours a day • Advocating with partners citywide for Proposition C, which passed in November, to preserve and expand San Francisco’s Children’s Fund to include services for 18 – 24 year olds We are looking forward to even more. Larkin Street recently began construction to renovate a 30,000 square foot site at 134 Golden Gate Avenue, where we will consolidate our flagship Drop-In Center, medical clinic, education and employment center, and administrative offices in early 2015. After a four-year search, we found a space with tremendous potential, where we can co-locate key services and administrative functions under one roof for the first time in more than two decades. The move is great for Larkin Street because it provides long-term cost security in San Francisco’s difficult rental market; more importantly, it’s great for our youth, who will experience a new level of integrated, holistic services at the single site. These exciting developments demonstrate that even after thirty years, Larkin Street remains nimble and responsive. We are able to take advantage of new opportunities because we

have a clear strategic vision and a roadmap to get us there. Our five-year strategic plan is ambitious. Since 2013, Larkin Street has made bold strides toward its goals. We have grown, refined, and aligned our programs and made key infrastructure improvements. Perhaps most importantly, we have defined outcomes that will ensure the long-term stability and success of our young people, and we are using these outcomes to drive our work across all programs: • • • •

Sustainable living-wage employment At least two years of post-secondary education Stable, long-term housing Emotional and physical health and wellbeing

With all of the progress Larkin Street has made, we still have an uphill climb. San Francisco’s housing market is showing no signs of improvement, and disconnected 18 – 24 year olds continue to bear a tremendous burden even as the economy has improved. San Francisco’s 2013 point-in-time count—the first ever to include transition age youth as a category for analysis—showed that more than 1,900 young people lack a stable place to sleep in San Francisco on any given night. We have our work cut out for us, but we also have a plan in place to make a greater impact locally and well beyond San Francisco. How will we get there? Larkin Street has set a $25 million goal for a Growth Campaign over the next three years. The Growth Campaign will enable Larkin Street to fully implement the initiatives of our strategic plan while funding the organic growth of our ongoing operations. We are already making excellent progress during the earliest phase of the campaign. We will launch the next phase in 2015, and we will look to the generous support of partners like you to reach our goal. Clearly, Larkin Street has much to celebrate and an exciting year ahead. Our focus, however, is not on our organizational milestones and accomplishments, but rather on the young people we serve. The truest measure of Larkin Street’s strength and success is the young people who depend on us every day. They inspire our staff and leadership to do this work, even when it’s daunting and difficult. These young people face unimaginable obstacles, and we model for each other the value of persistence, resilience, and hope. We do this hard work because it saves lives. We rely on an incredible network of supporters who share our commitment to these young people. A heartfelt thank you to the thousands of donors, volunteers, philanthropies, companies, and civic organizations who give time, talent, and resources to make it possible. Thank you. Warmest regards,

Sherilyn Adams Executive Director

arkin Street has a commitment to extend our impact beyond the youth we serve in programs which we carry out through our knowledge sharing and thought dissemination activities. One goal is to contribute to the knowledge base related to best practices and effective models of care for runaway and homeless youth. The other goal is to provide information that assists policymakers in making sound public policy decisions related to homeless youth. Both goals are achieved through a strategy that includes publications, presentations, advocacy efforts, and collaborative learning opportunities.

Policy and Advocacy Larkin Street representatives participate in various workgroups, committees, and tasks forces to advocate on behalf of homeless youth. In addition, representatives engage in other activities throughout the year. Selected examples from the last year: Children’s Funding Community Coalition: Participated in a broad coalition of over 50 service providers and agencies brought together to support the continuation of the Children’s Amendment in San Francisco and ensure a robust service system for the city’s children, youth, and their families. The resulting legislation, the Children and Families First Initiative (Prop C) expanded the fund to include transition age youth and increased the size of the fund to better meet community need. San Francisco Board of Supervisors Hearing on Youth Homelessness: This was the last in a series of hearings organized with the goal to examine current policies and programs, as well as to determine future strategy to help reduce the level of homelessness across the city and among subpopulations. Larkin Street provided background material to the Supervisors that outlined the scope of the problem, current gaps in San Francisco’s service delivery system, and recommendations. West Coast Convening: Participated in meetings to bring together representatives from homeless youth serving agencies in California, Oregon, and Washington. The meeting was designed to share best practices and new innovations around outcomes; share advocacy strategies and develop ways to leverage regional power; and build a coalition for collaborative learning.

Publications Youth Homelessness in San Francisco: 2013 Report on Incidence and Needs, is an annual publication that provides an overview of the incidence of youth homelessness in San Francisco, the needs of the population, and Larkin Street’s response. In Brief Reports Increasing Opportunities for Homeless Youth through Education provides an overview of the barriers to education that exists for most homeless youth and describes the pathway from educational disconnection to post-secondary completion and long-term self-sufficiency. Trendlines Reports Unintended Consequences: The Impact of Quality of Life Laws on Homeless Youth examines the barriers these laws pose for youth attempting to exit street life. The report also offers several policy recommendations as alternatives to criminalization.

Moving Towards a Clearer Picture of Youth Homelessness shares findings from the HUD Annual Homeless Assessment Report, highlighting the results from California and San Francisco. Additionally the report offers several policy recommendations to put the nation on track to end youth homelessness by 2020, a goal set forth in the federal strategic plan to address homelessness. As a community-based nonprofit organization, Larkin Street Youth Services depends upon community support in order to thrive. We could not function without the help of volunteers working throughout our programs every day. Whether they are cooking meals, tutoring, sorting donations or helping us to beautify a space for our youth, volunteers are an integral part of everything going on at Larkin Street. The energy, creativity, time, and passion they contribute enhances Larkin Street’s ability to provide high-quality comprehensive services for our youth, and we are truly grateful for this support.

Performing Arts Night August 14, 2014 Morgan Auditorium The Annual Performing Arts Night was an incredibly inspiring evening of performances from our very own talented group of artists and directed by Daniel Maradiaga, Art Program Manager. This year’s theme, “Finding Our Way”, spoke to the path each artist has been on, both with Larkin Street as they find their way in this world as well as their journey as artists. From original songs, to spoken word, to monologues, the audience was pulled into the stories the young people shared through this evening of performing arts.

Larkin Street Golf Tournament September 15, 2014 Lake Merced Golf Club A great time was had by all who attended the Fifth Annual Larkin Street Golf Tournament on September 15th. It was a beautiful day on the greens at Lake Merced Golf Club with contests, lunch, and plenty of friends enjoying the sunshine while raising money for Larkin Street. The day culminated with a post-tournament reception which included a silent auction and an awards ceremony. The event raised a record $62,295 for Larkin Street.

Paving the Way “30 Years Giving Hope” March 14, 2014 The Four Seasons We kicked off our 30th Anniversary with Paving the Way Gala “30 Years Giving Hope” that brought together youth alumni, supporters, board, staff, and volunteers from all decades of our history. The sold out event was cheered on by special guests, Former San Francisco 49er and Super Bowl Champion, Harris Barton, Mark Buell, Civic Leader, and America’s Cup yachtsman, Brad Webb, and raised a record $1 million. “When I first came to San Francisco, I quickly found myself homeless, broke, and with no job,” said Adamar, recipient of the “Going the Distance” Youth Achievement Award. “Larkin Street stepped in and provided me with a stable home-base, taught me how to live independently, and they gave me confidence in my skills in education and employment. I plan to continue with this successful momentum, go to law school, and one day give back to the community.”

Thank you to all of our sponsors, supporters and guests.

Friends of Larkin Street “This Is It!” Gala & Ice Skating Party June 28 & December 9, 2014 The Friends of Larkin Street continue to host the best parties in town and have raised over $280,000 since their inception in 2009. This past year they hosted several not to be missed events, including their annual gala and ice skating party. On June 28 at Hotel Kabuki, over 300 guests decked out in their best 70’s evening glam enjoyed delectable bites and wonderful wine and cocktails. The entire party danced the night away during performances by Foreverland, the Michael Jackson cover band, and world class DJ- JBoogie. Later in the year, the Friends hosted the annual holiday ice skating party at the Ice Skating Rink at Justin Herman Plaza to celebrate the holidays and giving back to Larkin Street.
