MEMBER DUES INCREASE

T

hank you for your continued support for our Club and Community. We are grateful for the opportunity to serve as your “third place” and provide an environment of fun and camaraderie for

you, your family and friends. On behalf of the Club, this letter is being sent to notify you to a change in your membership dues. In December of 2018, the Board/Club made a commitment to our members that dues would remain below the 2017 amount for the 2019 calendar year. As of October 8, 2019, our business interruption insurance coverage will come to an end and despite the cessation of insurance coverage, the Board/ Club has made a conscious decision to increase dues to just 80% of 2017 dues. This change will take effect October 1, 2019 and will remain in place for the balance of 2019. The Board/Club will continue to look at the dues structure and will communicate any changes for calendar year 2020, at least 30 days prior to such change.

To view chart of current dues and the increase at 80%: please flip to our COO’s article on page 4.

The application period is now open for the for the 2020 Board of Directors. Applications are available at The Sunset Grill, the Golf Shop and the Athletic Center.

OH, THE PLACES YOU’LL GO! RICKY POTTS, MEMBERSHIP DIRECTOR

O

riginally published January 22, 1990, “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!” is a book written and illustrated by children’s author Dr. Seuss. The book concerns the journey of life and its challenges. While this isn’t necessarily about life and its challenges, since moving to Santa Rosa, I’ve been on a similar journey visiting other clubs in the Bay Area. Even when I lived in Scottsdale, Arizona, I would spend my free time visiting clubs and meeting with General Managers to learn more about operations. I made friends with a lot of these people, and have had the chance to play some unforgettable golf courses. When I moved to Naples, Florida, I made it my goal to visit a new property or connect with someone locally every week. When we moved to Santa Rosa, I kept it going and have visited several courses this year, including:

Yocha Dehe Golf Club

Yocha Dehe Golf Club, located in Brooks, California, is managed by Troon and offers world class playing conditions. Their food and beverage operation is unmatched and the views are simply breathtaking. The golf course is also fun to play and I encourage you to make the drive.

Marin Country Club

Marin Country Club is located in Novato, less than an hour south of here. I’ve been familiar with Marin for several years, having built a professional relationship with Ryan Wilson, past General Manager. Laura Schifrin, membership director, reached out to me a few weeks ago and asked for a site visit. Got the chance to play the golf course, too, and learn more about their sales funnel.

Silverado Resort and Spa

Silverado hosts the Safeway Open, an official PGA TOUR event annually. Also managed by Troon, their Director of Golf Operations, Cody Sherill, actually helped me get hired by Troon 6 years ago. For this visit I took some members with me for a chance to see how the Troon Privé Privileges process works and to provide access to another local Troon managed facility. Hopefully some of our members get a chance to attend the Safeway Open later this month.

Blackhawk Country Club

When I was in the Troon corporate office, I met Jeff Dekruif. We’ve stayed in touch over the years, are both members of the Club Management Association of America (CMAA) and spend a lot of time on the phone and corresponding via email about best practices in club management. He has a background in finance, which is something I lack, and has been instrumental in my professional growth. I really enjoyed my time at Blackhawk and learning more about their golf courses and their master plan for a clubhouse redesign in the coming years.

St. Francis Yacht Club

A few weeks ago Melanie and I were at The Olympic Club for a CMAA meeting. During one of the breaks, I introduced myself to the gentleman sitting next to me. It was Paul Koojoolian, General Manager. We started talking about The Fountaingrove Club and turns out Ron actually hired Paul several years ago. He then introduced me to Michael Perry, clubhouse manager. We hit it off and he invited me to come down for a visit. Located at the base of the Golden Gate Bridge, it was thrilling to see how yacht clubs work as compared to golf clubs. As you can see, I’ve been busy, but have learned more in my 6 months in Santa Rosa than I have in my entire career. I am dedicated to spending my free time networking with other clubs, General Managers and associates to learn as much as I can to enhance the experience our members and guests have here at The Fountaingrove Club. Over the next few weeks I plan to visit Mayacama Golf Club, San Francisco Golf Club, Contra Costa Country Club, The Sutter Club and Green Hills Country Club. In the book, as the protagonist continues to explore, spurred on by the thoughts of places he will visit and things he will discover, the book cheerfully concludes with an open end. This is my open end and I look forward to the next facility I visit. Don’t worry, I’ll make sure to report back on what I’ve learned along the way.

he annual WGL Women’s Invitational was held in early August. The theme was “Glamping” and the turnout was terrific for this outstanding and wildly popular event. Thursday evening was the kick off party on the driving range with delicious appetizers, cocktails and crazy, fun games to get the teams warmed up. Have you ever tried to hit a marshmallow with a driver or pitch a wedge shot into a tent? The tournament began on Friday morning with twentyone teams (84 women) competed in three flights: The Park Rangers, the Trail Blazers and the Bird Watchers. The competition for both days was 2 Best Balls using the Stableford format. There were four team awards for each flight, but I will only list the first place gross and net winners due to limited space for this article. The gross score winners in the first flight were Pam Dowd’s team with Stacey Camara, Kelly Hauser and Janis Thornton at 125; net winners were Liz Frome’s team with Karen O’Neil, Terri Goodwin and Karen Treat at 178. The gross score winners in the second flight were MJ Murphy, Sue Corder, Rose Zamudio and Jeannie Alderson with 83; the net winners were Iris Harrell, Cathyann Stanchill, Maureen Muckle and Judy Early at 178. The gross score winners in the third flight were Laura McCarter, Valerie Anderson, Tiffany Bagala and Cindy Cullen at 78; net winners were Mun Chong, Jin Yu, Vivian Oh and Kay Chun at 170. Other member winners included Diane Ehni’s team for best costumes, Audrey Sager for most accurate drive, and Kathy White for closest to the pin on #17. 12

Please remember that our next Guest Day is Thursday, September 5 at 9am. You may invite up to three guests per WGL member. All Fountaingrove lady golfers are invited to join us and you may follow the field if you prefer not to compete. Please contact me roadrunner123@att.net, or Pam Petersen peterpam@aol.com if you are interested in playing. This is a friendly competition, usually 2 Best Balls, followed by a buffet lunch at The Sunset Grill. Our annual Captains Classic Tournament was held on Thursday, August 22. This special event was hosted by Cindy Buckles. The day began with breakfast on the range followed by 18 holes of golf team competition. Even though the temperatures were soaring, we made it around the course in record time to enjoy a delicious luncheon in The Sunset Grill with awards and prizes for everyone. We welcomed back ten of our past WGL Captains including Nan Rocky (1992) and Nell Magnuson (1993). The big winners were Stella Hanson, Audrey Sager, Ayn Coleman and Barbara Stevens at -11 strokes. Thank you to Executive Chef Patrick Tafoya, Monique and Stacy for a great presentation in The Sunset Grill. Much appreciation goes out to Cindy Buckles from all of us in the WGL, for putting together such a special day. Play-days for the month of September are: Guest Day on 9/5, WGL Club Championship is 9/7-9/8. We host the WGANC Open Day on 9/12, and Cha Cha Cha is the game on Tuesday, 9/17. ust the other day, I was playing at a Home & Home tournament at SRCC when I noticed lots of leaves falling on the green and a hint of chilliness in the air. Yes, it’s true! The autumnal equinox is coming up in a few weeks (September 22-23) which makes us all wonder, “How did the summer slip by so quickly?” With Fall upon us we are heading into the championship season here at The Fountaingrove Club and we have plenty of events to fill out the month. So, if you’re up for some good competition and you’ve got some extra time to play golf on the weekends, let’s get out there and get the ball rolling!

Congratulations to all the winners and a big thank you to all the players who made this an outstanding event. Also, many thanks to the Co-Chairs, Ayn Coleman and Kathy White, and all of their committee members for taking the lead in organizing this year’s “Glamping” themed tournament. Thank you, also, to all the Fountaingrove staff members who helped make this tournament a smashing success… we couldn’t do it without YOU!

GOLF NEWS

TOURNAMENT SEASON 2019 COMING TO AN END Jesse Halstad Head Golf Professional, PGA Member, TPI Certified

T

he 2019 tournament season is nearly over with just a few major golf events remaining. The biggest upcoming events are the Ladies and Senior Club Championships one September 7 and 8 the Junior Club Championship on Saturday, September 14 and the Couples Championship on, September 21 and 22. All events are available for registration online or by calling the pro shop at 707 701 3088. The Ladies Championship is open to all female golf members, including young executive or senior memberships. We will crown a Fountaingrove Women’s Club Champion and if the winner is not a member of the WGL then the WGL member with the lowest score will be the WGL Champion. The Senior Club Championship is open to any golf or senior golf members over the age of 50.

Patrick Tafoya’s team. It was a huge success with a full field of 120 players. Our Women’s Invitational was another great time at The Grill and on the course, teams captained by Valerie Anderson, Tiffany Bagala, Mun Chong, Cindy Cullen, Sue Corder, Liz Frome, Pam Dowd, Iris Harrell, Laura McCarter and MJ Murphy won either Gross or Net in their respective flights. Eddy Lepe found success again this summer when he captained his Executive League Team to victory in the season long event that culminated with an 18 hole stroke play championship. It was a very close season points battle and in the end the team captained by Lepe, Peter Colbert and Mike Yee was able to battle back from second place and overcome the first place team captained by Paul Greve.

I wanted to send out congratulations to some of our tournament winners so far this year. Aiden Nguyen was able to fight off poor weather and a strong field to capture the 2019 Men’s Stroke Play Championship. The field played through a sustained downpour on the back nine and Aiden was able to stay focused and bring home the victory. Our 2019 Men’s Invitational Champions are Eddy Lepe and his guest Jarin Beck. The event was the first time we were able to showcase The Sunset Grill and Executive Chef

It has been a great season of golf so far and we are looking forward to continuing the trend. One other event to put on your radar is the MemberMember Tournament on October 26 and 27. This tournament is open to all golf members and will be two person teams. We are hoping to have 3 divisions, a Men’s, a Ladies and a Mixed Division so the teams can be made of two men, two women or a man and a woman and will be flighted accordingly. We will be tinkering with the format on

this event and we hope to unveil some of the more interactive abilities of our tournament software for this one. We will have daily skins games as well as pari-mutuel betting, it should be a lot of fun. Executive Chef Patrick will have dinner on the first night and breakfast and lunch the second day. Cost has yet to be determined. Thank you to everyone who has been participating in this golf season’s events. We appreciate the large turnouts we’ve been getting and if you haven’t been able to get out for these events, circle your calendar for next year. The last note is a quick request in regards to score posting. We are pleased with everyone’s cooperation so far with the new procedures for turning in scorecards, but in order for us to be more efficient, please make sure you are writing down your name (last name preferred) and scores legibly and indicating the tees that you played. Thank you everyone and we look forward to seeing you!

IRRIGATION MANAGEMENT DUSTIN MCINTOSH

GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT

P

roperly irrigating a golf course is an art that takes caring individuals time to perfect to be done right. This has been an extremely challenging year in these regards and we have overcome a lot of adversity and are moving in a direction which will help us improve the course and playing conditions. There are many things to consider in the process and we are looking to highlight some of those challenges in this article. The golf course maintenance team’s philosophy in irrigation at The Fountaingrove Club is to create an efficient system which will support the turf’s health, while producing fast and firm playing conditions. We are predominantly turfed with cool season turfgrass grown on heavy clay soils that require a lot of attention, especially during the hot dry periods of the year. Getting water to the spots is needed, without creating wet spots, it is a difficult proposition requiring lot of labor to do properly. Pulling out a water hose and supplementing water by hand instead of turning on irrigation heads, is fundamental in our success. Staffing and training up irrigators is easier said than done, and finding these specialized people that understand golf course irrigation systems is hard to come by these days. Once these individuals are located and brought on board, there is still a steep learning curve for them to overcome in understanding the intricacies of a property. Things such as: understanding how water moves in the soil, where the wet & dry spots are, how the course changes over the seasons, and the differences in irrigation strategies between wet and dry years are only learned through observations on a property over time. When established Irrigation Technicians move on from a property, it is important to get all their intimate course knowledge downloaded to their predecessor. If there is not a successor on board at that time, you will ultimately lose a lot of valuable information. The value of understanding the intrinsic challenges of a system with over 1000 irrigation heads cannot be understated. Technical expertise needed to troubleshoot irrigation problems can be taught, but knowing specific things like: what sprinklers are prone to getting stuck on, where the control valves are, how to operate the field controllers, how to program & edit the central computer, and how to use a TDR meter to achieve the proper levels of water content in the soil, are very important to know and take time to learn. The irrigation system’s efficiency is effected dramatically by many variables outside the direct control of an Irrigation Technician. According to many professionals in the industry, an irrigation system achieving somewhere around 80% efficiency is remarkable and rarely achieved. Wear & tear on a system, weather patterns, and poor designs can create real challenges and decrease efficiency dramatically.

DUSTIN MCINTOSH Continued from Page 11

Wear and tear is constant when the system is in use and can be managed with a proper budget and planning. Every component of an irrigation system has a life span and needs to be planned to be changed before it faults or breaks. As the pump stations charge the system, the friction of the water spiraling through the system slowly erodes everything over time. Pipes, fittings, valves, filters, heads, nozzles and various other components of the system all need to have a plan to be replaced.

October

Weather patterns can be the most frustrating and challenging thing to management in relation to running a proper irrigation cycle. One of the worst weather related that affects irrigation efficiency is wind, which is hard to predict in intensity and effect. We religiously reference what is termed ET or evapo-transpiration rate when setting up an irrigation cycle. This takes all environmental conditions into consideration and produces a number related to the amount of water that was lost from the soil over each day. We use this to number to anticipate our needs and tweak our system. During winter months, we are very aware of this measurement but apply water on an as needed basis. Our operation is limited to running the majority of the irrigation cycles at night, this is due to the restraints of the system in terms of gallons which it can supplied at any given time, and our goal of not getting anyone wet with a sprinkler. So, given this fact we are usually not around to watch the system run and need to turn sprinklers on periodically to check how well they are working and their adjustment. Many sprinklers are adjusted to apply water to a very specific area and will periodically come out of adjustment (which is usually noticed once there is a problem). The perimeter of the course, as well as, areas under oak trees are purposely unirrigated to cut down on weed production and to help with the health of our native flora that is not used to receiving so much unnatural water.

SPOOKTACULAR OCTOBER 25 - Games, costumes, spookie fun for all! The kids love this event and so do the parents! Look for more details, coming soon.

Our pump stations have variable drive pumping systems which can regulate the pressure they create this helps maintain pressure more accurately and will detect significant breaks in the line and shut the system down as to not waste water. The pump stations are the heart of the system and need to be maintained regularly to ensure that they are in proper working condition. The proper programming of the central computer system is also necessary to manage the flow rates of water in the pipes, this helps to reduce the risk of water hammer and the breakage of system components. Since the Tubbs Fire destroyed many of our field satellites and our central system we were able to upgrade to the newest software and field clocks which we find much more user friendly.

MEMBER/MEMBER OCTOBER 26 & 27 - This tournament is open to all golf members and will be two person teams. We are hoping to have 3 divisions, a Men’s, a Ladies and a Mixed Division so the teams can be made of two men, two women or a man and a woman and will be flighted accordingly.

There are still a lot of considerations to be made in perfecting the art of irrigating a golf course. Soil borne diseases create hydrophobic soils, and wetting agents can help one manage hydrophobic soils. Organic acids can also help clean the soils of waxy deposits from fungi and the likes. Poor irrigation designs can create formidable challenges. Back-flow devices and pressure relief valves need special considerations in maintenance. Even the trees found in turf areas need to be pruned up as to not block sprinkler patterns, or else one needs to install low angle sprinklers. Dirty power from the PG&E grid can fault pump stations. Communication wires can get cut and loose communication with the central computer, causing the sprinkler to not run. As you can see, there is a lot associated with the job of being an Irrigation Technician. It is very important to have knowledgeable, caring staff on board to be troubleshooting and make improvements. It is a never ending job that only gets slightly easier in the wet winter months. Even at that time, we are fixing design issues and setting ourselves up for the next season. See you on the course! The FountainPen — 17

CHALLENGE YOURSELF Scott Butler Athletic Supervisor

ON THE RUN WITH SCOTT & RON SCOTT BUTLER, Athletic Supervisor

I

n early May, Ron our COO, challenged me to get him in shape by putting together a road map of our Clubs Group Exercise Classes to follow on a daily basis. From spin, hot Pilates, yoga, and weight room circuits, Ron began his transformation with the encouragement of our instructors and members. One thing led to another and I threw down a challenge to Ron that I never would thought possible: Run the 26.2 Mile, Santa Rosa Full Marathon! Before I knew it, I received an email from Ron “I’m signed up and paid in full.” That pushed me to do the same. We both ran on our own during the week and on Sunday’s we ran long together. I motivated and coached his running; he mentored and inspired my leadership of the Club. I’m grateful for that time together. On the day of the marathon, Ron and I ran our own races. His goal was to finish. My goal was to run it in 3 hours and 30 minutes, a time I’ve never before achieved. I always dedicate my marathons to my mother who passed away suddenly in 1994. This time I decided to dedicate it to our Community and the extraordinary resilience we have shown raising from the ashes two years ago. I draw inspiration and strength from my race’s dedication when I need it most. For fifteen miles I ran with a group of runners locked in to the program “Pacer Runner” and set to finish in 3 hours and 30 minutes. Then suddenly a minor ankle roll and cramping came on. I slowly lost the group and ten minutes later I was in harrowing pain and dealing with such a severe lack of confidence that I lost my goal.

SCOTT BUTLER Continued from page 20

I reminded myself of our Sonoma County community, to whom I dedicated this 26.2 mile run. For eleven miles I persevered and hobbled the rest of the way. I hurt but didn’t quit. Crossing the finish line into the arms of my love, Suzi, and my family was truly a remarkable moment. Two years ago I lost enough endurance race medals to line all the walls in my garage—twenty plus years worth. This Santa Rosa Marathon Medal is now my first. As my Mother in heaven would always remind me “Today is the first day of the rest of your life.” The community around us all is extraordinary. Everyone has gained strength in their perseverance. I challenge you to try a new activity. My team of Personal Trainers and myself are here to support you. See you at the Club!

BODY, MIND & SPIRIT

Stressors like work, family responsibilities, and health effect our individual emotional and physical health, our social functioning, and our overall well-being. As we approach the 2 year anniversary of the fires, we want to offer a unique program to our members. Join this 8-week program and you will practice evidencebased self-care tools for effectively addressing personal stress. You will develop skills in meditation, guided imagery, biofeedback, and autogenic training, and of self-expression in words, drawings, and movement. You will build supportive social connections that are a key predictor of personal stress reduction and community resilience.

BECKY ENNIS is an Instructor and Personal Trainer at The Fountaingrove Club. She incorporates her own practice of mindbody skills into her clients’ workouts. She is a thoughtful and experienced leader, working her professional career in social services. She earned her undergraduate degree from University of Wisconsin-Madison and her Master of Nonprofit Administration at the University of San Francisco. Being community oriented, Becky jumped at the opportunity to work towards certification through the Center for Mind Body Medicine to facilitate groups in the community. After the fires, Becky has been compelled to help people heal and transform their lives. Having participated in the CMBM training, she has seen the benefits of these groups in her own life and family. These skills are for anyone with any desire to become a more whole being or find ways to deal with life’s stressful moments. Self-care is a necessity not a luxury.

LINDSAY USHER is a high-energy, collaborative and inspirational human resources leader in a local healthcare organization. She earned her undergraduate degree from UCLA and her Master of Arts degree at San Francisco State University. She enjoys practicing yoga and is also a registered yoga teacher (RYT). She is Certified Professional Coach (CPC) and coaches leaders in the healthcare organization where she works and on her own time. Lindsay lost her home in the 2017 fire and was overwhelmed with the outpouring of support for herself and her family. She wanted to give back to the community and embarked on certification through the Center for Mind Body Medicine to facilitate Mind Body Skills groups in the community to support the healing and recovery process. Lindsay’s personal journey through the work has been transformative and she believes the unique opportunity to offer these groups is something that would be valuable to anyone at anytime. Whether we want more peace, more focus or sense of community, this work supports us! The FountainPen — 21

FOLLOWING THE ROAD BACK

T

he Fountaingrove Club’s new clubhouse embraces the paradox of building a strong and vibrant community

upon the devastation wrought by the Northern California fires of 2017. This will be where the dispersed nature of club amenities are brought together to foster interaction by all. This clubhouse encourages use throughout the day by being both a home and flexible work place for members and their guests. It understands that respecting tradition and community means embracing families and welcoming users of diverse interests. Rooted in the natural beauty of the site, the new clubhouse celebrates natural materials, the craft of building with expressive, but minimal detailing and outdoor space conceived as seamless extensions of indoor activities. It embraces wine country ease with understated elegance. Every detail has a purpose, but the open, expansive plan provides unlimited flexibility in creating shared experiences and lasting memories.
