Saddleback College receives $2 million grant to aid in vets’ educational goals Student veterans’ military training now being considered in curriculum NATHAN CLIFTON CONTRIBUTOR

Saddleback College was awarded $2 million from the California Department of Finance for the college’s Higher Education program, the Veteran Articulation Track initiative.

This award will aid in innovation of the school’s ability to help students complete their degrees in a timely manner, as well as make college more affordable.

With many veterans learning technical skills during their time in the armed forces, there are only a select few elective credits that can attribute to those skills.

This lack of available credits results in a much longer path to a degree than what should be needed. What results from this is a student veteran using his/ her entire 36 months of educational benefits from their GI bill without coming close to earning their degree.

“This is an incredible opportunity for Saddleback College and our student veterans to apply their prior military training towards a degree or certificate,” said Saddleback College President Tod Burnett. “These funds are a game changer for the landscape of higher education for veterans in our state.”

This coalition of these two programs will lead to an interactive online resource for student veterans to gain more knowledge about career and transfer planning, as well as learn about what military training is deemed credible toward their degree.

Medical practice, foreign communication skills, and mechanical engineering are included in what will transfer over to college credits at Saddleback College.

“Folks will be surprised when they get into the world of looking at military training credit how legitimate these trainings are,” said VETS Coordinator/ Counselor Terence Nelson.

The $2 million from the grant will play a big role in giv-

ing compensation to the faculty who lack the appropriate time to articulate the curriculum which transfers to credential units. This is where the online resource comes in, called the “military to college completion” toolkit. Students can simply go online to see what training qualifies and what doesn’t. The implementation of this toolkit will save valuable time in the crossway between training and semester units.

“There’s no reason to give somebody with that much training, millions of dollars in taxpayer training, college credit,” said Veterans Counselor Kolin Williams. “We shouldn’t have a Sergeant Major have to work for two years at community college just to go get a bachelor’s degree and transfer out. That’s not the way it should work.”

While this award was an accomplishment that was years in the making, this is only a small feat in the scope of things.

While Saddleback is currently partnered with CSU Fullerton, Cal Poly Pomona and the CSU Office of the Chancellor, Nelson stressed that the main goal is to implement this articulation system throughout every California state school to help student veterans and active duty military.

“Our goal is the scale up to California,” Nelson said.

Though this is a step in the right direction, it is evident that there is only room to grow by assisting other schools to include this initiative in their system, resulting in allowing an easier pathway to a degree for those who have served our country.

California Legislature passed Senate Bill 1 last Thursday, which will raise gasoline taxes by 12 cents, will take effect November 1.

The revenue from the tax increase is expected to generate over $50 billion over the next ten years.

This bill was fought with opposition from Republican senators.

“The State Senate tonight passed yet another tax

on hard-working Californians because we continue to fail the people by wasting money on programs we can’t afford,” said Sen. Jeff Stone.

Opponents have also expressed concern that the funds from the taxes will not be used appropriately. The Desert Sun reported that at a rally in Riverside proponents for the passing of the bill insisted that there is an amendment to the state constitution and a new office to track spending that will prevent the misuse of funds.

Sen. Jim Beall, chairman of the Senate Transportation and Housing Committee and the author of S.B. 1, has been working on this bill with other members of state legislature for the past two years.

“We passed a road-fund-

ing solution that will not take a dime out of the general fund, preserving revenue for our schools, universities, and human services,’’ Beall said.

The gas tax in California has not been raised in the last 23 years, which is the cause for such a drastic increase. Gov. Jerry Brown campaigned to get this bill passed, explaining that this 12-cent increase will cost drivers approximately $10 a month extra.

“All of you will realize that what you are paying now in wrecking your car on the roads and what you will save on this measure, it’s a hell of a good deal,” Brown said.

In addition to the gas tax a new vehicle feeand electric cars will now have to pay a $100 registration fee.

Dean of Fine Arts Bart McHenry will begin his new role within the Division of Community Education, Emeritus Institute and K-12 partnerships. The role, which did not previously exist is still being finalized.

Saddleback College president Tod Burnett issued an email outlining the role changes, explaining this role will expand the community partnerships and increase enrollments.

McHenry wasn’t able to comment on his new job duties since this is a new position that has just been created. However, McHenry is eager to take on a role that benefits the entire college as opposed to one specific area.

“I am looking forward to helping the college on a college wide effort,” McHenry said.

McHenry’s position of Dean of Fine Arts will be taken over by Dr. Cadence Wynter. She was previously the dean of Health and Behavioral Sciences for the past 5 years does not have specific experience with Fine Arts.

“Dr. Wynter has demonstrated a clear ability to provide structure and consistency in leading an academic division and she will be an effective advocate for the division’s students, faculty, staff, and visual and performing arts programs,” Burnett said.

Although Wynter does not have any experience within the Fine Arts department the college seems confident in their decision to make her dean of Fine Arts.

“Dr. Wynter will be a great asset to the Fine Arts department due to her experience with the college,” McHenry Said Wynter, who was unable to be reached for comment has been the dean of Social and Behavioral Sciences for Saddleback College for nearly five years.

The transition period will take place over the next few weeks, and during that time McHenry will be working closely with Wynter.

Wynter’s previous position of dean of social and behavioral sciences has yet to be filled and the college plans to advertise the position after the transition.

Many Republicans in U.S. Congress are facing much more criticism from their constituents since President Trump has taken office. Rep. Mimi Walters from the 45th district in California, has been facing backlash for not holding a town hall since being elected. Now Democrats are challenging Rep. Walter’s seat in the House. Many individuals have come forward saying they would run against Rep. Walters in 2018.

People on Twitter are showing their support to vote Walters out of office. Katie Porter, UC Irvine law professor is challenging Rep. Walters seat. Porter has been active at many rallies held outside of Walters office.

Porter has even become a spokesperson for the Indivisible groups in OC. “I’m really running to do what I’ve always done which is to stand up to special interests” said Porter in a Times interview.

This is what Porter has been doing for several years. Porter is now being endorsed by her former Harvard professor, Sen.Elizabeth Warren.

And Porter was even one of the early whistleblowers about mortgage fraud by Wall Street before the financial collapse in 2008.

Although many think the house still

might fall in Republican hands next year, there is an increasingly higher chance that most of the seats are up for grabs.

Tuesday. Min, a Harvard graduate, will run beside colleague Katie Porter. Son of Korean immigrants, Min believes he has a lot in common with the people in the 45th district.

“You think about what brought my parents here—it was the core American values of tolerance, diversity, economic opportunity and social mobility. What Trump was doing with the Muslim ban was un-American.

Who’s next on Donald Trump’s list?” Min told the Register.

Within the week that both UC Irvine professors announced their candidacy, another Democrat came forward.

Kia Hamadanchy, a legislative assistant for U.S Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) has announced he will run against Rep. Walters.

If successful, he will become the first American of Iranian descent to be elected to U.S. Congress.

“The hope is that one of us (in each race) will be able to distinguish themselves in stature and fundraising. The first hurdle is who’s going to raise the most money — that’s a measure of who knows how to run for office.” said Hamadanchy in Register.

While many Democrats are targeting Orange County for leaning towards Hilary Clinton in November, Walters still won by a strong 58 percent vote. Many think Democrats will have to try really hard to flip Republican’s seats next year.

Students, staff and employers gathered in the Saddleback College quad for an annual career fair Wednesday.

There were over 135 registered organizations and 125 of them made an appearance.

These companies and employers each had their own booths lined up filling up most of the space in the quad.

800 job seekers attended and there were more than 30 different industries to choose from. There were job representatives in industries such as human services, law enforcement, real estate, retail and many more.

The career fair not only helps students find a job, but also helps them practice interview skills, ask specific questions, network and get an inside scoop of the job they are interested in learning about.

Over the years, employers have been impressed with students at Saddleback College. They have interviewed and hired many candidates through the career fair.

“It’s a great place for students, community and job seekers,” said Eric Hilden, Career Placement Officer at Saddleback College.

Hilden also assist students by doing one-on-one whether it’s making a resume, improving their LinkedIn profiles, Internet branding, social media branding or finding a job and getting employed. In addition, Hilden offers recruitment ser-

vices for organizations and helps companies recruit in different ways.

“I think this career fair is great and creates favorable opportunities for Saddleback students to get a taste of different career fields, including the US Army and other opportunities that are out there for them,” said Lt. Hollis.

Alison Buck, a pre-med major, said the event offered multiple benefits.

“This career fair has made it possible for me to connect with future employers in a more casual but personal way,” Buck said. “Discussing new and upcoming careers benefitted me by giving me the courage and information I need to be successful in future interviews.”

Rachel Yee, a business administration major, said the fair gives students a chance to check out possible careers and job opportunities.

Students can also find job opportunities at the Saddleback College Gaucho Jobs website online, official student employment system.

There are over 200 to 300 job postings each month for students to choose from. Another way for students to find jobs throughout the semester, Hilden brings employers for individual campus recruitment and they can be found in Saddleback College’s quad.

“There’s so many opportunities and it’s nice for students to be able to see it, to see that there’s so many options and help them discover who they want to be and what they want to do” said Lily Jacobs, culinary arts major.

According to the career fair flyer, a great way to prepare is to research the companies that will be attending, bring multiple copies of a resume for employers to see the talents, successes and skills that each student has.

Practicing a pitch, or making a list of questions for the employer would also be beneficial. Lastly, dress for success and show etiquette and professionalism. This advice should suffice for the next career fair Saddleback College will have.

Pepsi ad pulled GABRIELLE CRISOSTOMO CONTRIBUTOR

Pepsi sparked controversy with an ad released featuring reality TV star and model Kendall Jenner April 4. It was removed hours later from YouTube.

The video depicts protestors and ends with Jenner handing a police officer a can of Pepsi.

Some critics noted similarities between Jenner’s final scene and the photo of Ieshia Evans, who was detained in Baton Rouge, Louisiana July 2016.

“Pepsi was trying to project a global message of unity, peace and understanding,” Pepsi said in a statement the following day.

“Clearly, we missed the mark and apologize.”

The ad divided people in the company, creating backlash.

Pepsi also apologized to

Jenner, who has since been the center of attention. Jenner has yet to release a statement regarding the commercial. Critics have accused Jenner of being a “self-promotional tool” as well as a supporter of appropriating resistance.

“The Kendall Jenner Pepsi fiasco is a perfect example of what happens when there’s no black people in the room when decisions are being made,” tweeted Travon Free, comedian and writer for “Full Frontal with Samantha Bee.” Bernice King, daughter of Martin Luther King Jr., took it to social media.

“If only Daddy would have known about the power of #Pepsi,” said King in a tweet, including a photo of her father from the “March Against Fear” demonstration in 1966.

5 albums to get high to 5. Kendrick Lamar “To Pimp a Butterfly” Kendrick rolls us through the whole feel of the album, beginning with the first song. “Wesley’s Theory” funk rolls through the speakers and through my body.

“To Pimp a Butterfly” is different but remarkable, bringing back the funk and soul of the ’80s. A reflection of old school L.A. hip-hop, with Lamars lyrics about politics, African American culture, police brutality and mental illness.

Kendrick is the art and the artist, walking and talking through bars. He is mesmerizing.

Kendrick tells stories through his albums, the duality of the songs “U” and “I” are the most obvious ones. Battling love and depression, Kendrick is never afraid to hold back his feelings.

4. Frank Ocean “Blonde” Frank Ocean’s anticpated album “Blond” was one of the best albums of 2016. After “Channel Orange,” Ocean took a four-year hiatus, dropping two singles.

Although not entirely absent, he would often post poetry or writings on his Tumblr about dealing with fame and depression.

This album touches the darkness, the light and mysteriousness, that is Frank Ocean.

“Blond” is a journey and an experience that echoes in my heart.

He combines his smooth R&B voice with his unusual sounds that mix indie-psychedelic rock and hip-hop.

With the single that started it all off, “Nikes” rings through the

speakers. Breaking his silence, Ocean mentions Travyon Martin in his music video. Dressed in a hoodie, the iconic martyr for all those who are innocent and voiceless, he eombodies that into his music.

Ocean is an incredible storyteller that tugs at your heart with his melodies. He makes everything sound introspective and nostalgic through his use of trippy waves. Singing about coming out and life after fame, his voice is angelic and dreamy. “Blond” is truly an original masterpiece that anyone could relate to. This is a perfect album to get high to while reflecting or singing.

3. Homeshake “Midnight Snack” Homeshake is a solo project made by Peter Sagar, the former guitarist for Mac Demarco’s live band. “Midnight Snack” is smooth, electronic and the guitar riffs makes you curious as to what comes next.

His smooth R&B tones and house-recorded aesthetic voice makes “Midnight Snack” a perfect album to smoke a spliff to.

Sagar’s voice is unique and the whole album has this psychedlic feel to it. His voice is enticing and seem to flow through the guitar riffs. The lo-fi music is very sensual and relaxing, make sure you listen to this album while you’re outside and preferably in nature.

Homeshake reminds me of a house party in the suburbs where everyone you know is there. And everyone is smoking pot. “Midnight Snack” is also romantic.

The lyrics will touch you if you’re a little introverted stoner.

“Midnight Snack” ends in a hard funky note. Leaving you astonishing, staring at an empty

sky at 3 a.m., holding a bong and wondering, “Holy shit, that was incredible.”

2. STRFKR “Reptillians” STRFKR (pronounced star fucker) is an electronic indie-rock band reigning from Portland, Oregon. The band’s second studio album released in 2011 “Reptilians” is an iconic indie record.

This 2011 album is a record anyone can replay over and over again. Truly a timeless and weird record, “Reptilians” is a great album to get high to.

STRFKR is a complete existential experience. This album will live on forever and be used as inspiration for anyone with a synthesizer. Sit down in your car, light one up to this and look up at the night sky to feel less lonely.

1. LCD Soundsystem “This is Happening” LCD Soundsystem’s last studio album released in 2010 “This is Happening” dropped before the band announced their last tour. They touch the nostalgia of what it’s like being in your 20s and being with your friends again.

Ryan Murphy, the bands frontman, gained attention in the early 2000s for their distinct iconic dancy and funky sound still remembered today.

LCD Soundsystem is the only band to make the cowbell sound good and danceable. This is a perfect album to roll a few spliffs to and to get weird. LCD Soundsystem is expected to release a new album in 2017.

The Saddleback Safety Net in effect JOEY CLARK

The idea of the Safety Net program began when Donald Trump was elected president late last year. With the introduction of a new presidential era, fear and uncertainty swept across the nation. That was when Carmenmara Hernandez-Bravo, cochair of both the International Language department and the Equity and Diversity Committee, fought to put the Safety Net policy in place on the Saddleback College campus.

“When Trump was elected, students started coming to me and were in horrible shape,” Bravo said. “They were scared and they were worried, and we decided that we need to have safe places for the students to come and talk about these issues if they wish, or so we can provide referrals.”

Since the Trump era started apprehensions about race, culture,

sexual orientation and gender identity have burst into the spotlight. These issues are now being talked about everywhere through all walks of life in our country more than they ever have before.

“Everything is confidential if they come to talk with me,” Bravo said. “If I have to comfort a student, or whatever information

they bring up to me remains between me and the student, and if I cannot help, I can provide referrals to someone that can.”

All of this said, the policy is a fairly good idea. This is a volunteer program, so it is possible that a lot of professors will brush it aside. The relationship between professor and students isn’t on a personal level like teachers in high school. Most professors probably don’t care to have students they barely know or haven’t met before come to them seeking comfort and advice on these big issues.

It is to be remembered that a lot of professors work at two or more schools. So how is it possible for every professor to comfort each student?

To help better understand the changes this Safety Net program would bring amongst professors, Cristy Brenner of the geography department at Saddleback shared her thoughts.

The Lariat is leftist propaganda This is the first issue I have picked up of the Lariat and am not surprised by what is inside. Not to mention spelling and grammatical errors on every page, there is a clear bias and push for an agenda within. This is less news and more opinionated, or blogging.

I do not know if this is the goal; however there is no objectivity in the articles. Let’s start with Sanctuary Cities....

And let’s get a few things straightened out. If someone is in this country illegally, they are committing an illegal act. “Oh, but they’re good, honest, hard working people just trying to make a living.” Look, I get that. Come here legally. This is exactly why the current administration is pushing border security. People are, say it with me, breaking the law when they enter this country without proper documentation. No matter what happens before or after that, this is a criminal offense.

Ultimately it is up to the professors to decide whether or not to participate in this new program. Participating professors also need to have a line of referrals set up so that if the issue brought up is out of their ability to address, they’ll have to be able to refer the student to someone on or off campus who can.

But what is the difference between hemp and marijuana?

Hemp is essentially used to describe the food and fiber variety of the cannabis plant, while marijuana is cannabis that has grown to enhance the chemicals that put you in a state of euphoria.

Its recent discovery has clouded the medical marijuana world and prompted them to ask questions about its various properties. Unlike THC, CBD

is non-psychoactive and therefore doesn’t create any euphoric “high” when used. Many testimonies can conclude that CBD does indeed serve as a positive substitute or replacement for other over the counter drugs.

Did you pass out on Friday night and resurrect Sunday morning? Then you must be the Jesus of Coachella. You and about the other thousands of music lovers who attended the festival last weekend. I fortunately got the chance to attend the festival this year and now I finally understand the fear-of-missingout-obsession with and why no one ever does Coachella sober.

A smart move or not, I left for Coachella early Friday morning so I didn’t enter the festival until later that evening. The worst part of the night may have been trying to enter the festival and to the girls walking in front of me, yes, please link hands and create your wall of friendship and walk incredibly slow, dragging your feet.

Don’t worry, take your time.

I’m in no rush. It’s not like one of my favorite bands is going to perform in 10 minutes, so really continue talking about how Britney is such a wild animal that you won’t be able to recognize who she is by the end of the night.

The moment I entered the festival grounds it seemed as if I had been transported to an oasis, isolated from the rest of the world, full of beauty, art,

Once inside, I vaguely remember where the time went.

It’s 5 o’clock one moment, I’m dancing to Broods, and then I somehow found myself dancing to The XX and then it’s 10 o’clock and I was dancing away to Empire of the Sun. Beyonce thank you so much for canceling, they don’t call you Queen B for nothing. Now I know what the B stands for and it certainly doesn’t stand for Beyonce.

Speaking of Queen Bs, my experience at the HP Lounge may have been the worst thing that could happen to anyone. I was extremely excited to view the virtual reality tour they had, the 360 camera and creating my own bandana with the 3D printer. The virtual reality tour and the 360 camera were the highlight of this dome. The technology I saw in there is without

a doubt the central core of our future.

Afterwards I got in line to design a bandana and this is when everything bad that could happen became real. After waiting for over an hour in the blazing hot sun, my sister and I finally entered the cool and air conditioned dome. Needing to charge my phone, I sat on the sofa next to the computers that controlled the lights in the dome.

For a moment things were fantastic. I was almost next in line to design my bandana and my phone was charging. Which meant I would be able to post Lady Gaga and Martin Garrix’s performance on Snapchat so everyone could know I was here, because what was the point of coming if no one knew that I was here.

And then it happened. Some children and their parents sat next to me to play with the computer in front of me. It wasn’t a big deal at first, seeing as how we all fit on the sofa so I was okay with sharing the sofa, knowing just how tiresome it can be standing under the hot sun. This was my mistake.

The kids, who I assumed were a couple, began playing with the computer that controlled the lights. I figured I could be kind to them and let the children have fun. This was my second mistake.

I remember seeing a sign at the door stating that HP would possibly film inside so when these official looking camera men started to film the kids playing on the computer, I realized this wasn’t such a good idea. It got worse when the camera men would ask me if I could angel my head to the left because it was getting in the video.

Soon one of the camera men began filming behind my head while another filmed on the side of me, each getting in my personal bubble. Finally they asked if I could get off the sofa so they could film the couple.

So grabbed my phone and stood back in line with my sister.

I get it. You would rather get a video of the blonde, skinny and underaged girl who looks like a Brandy Melville model and her boyfriend who looks like he so desperately wants to be the next Cameron Dallas, or whatever the next cool and trendy app is and become instantly famous for no talent what so ever.

I guess they make more of an appeal to the general mass than me, but no worries my phone was fully charged and I only a handful of people were in front of me for the bandana, so besides a little embarrassment, I was totally fine.

Then 10 minutes later, I was the next person on line. One of HP employees helping design the bandana smiles at me and calls for the next person in line.

This was my turn, after waiting for almost two hours I was next to design my bandana. I felt like everything in my entire 20 years of living had been leading to this moment and I was damn happy.

And because I was stunned that this man had the audacity to ask me (even though he had already placed the kids and started filming before he finished asking) to let these children cut in front of me after I had been waiting under the sun 90 minutes just to design a bandana with the 3D printer, all I could respond with a shake of my head, indicating it was okay. Well it certainly wasn’t.

I later found out I was right about the couple, who were Dylan Jordan and Summer Mckeen, just a bunch of children trying to build fame on social media for being a couple. Sorry but you’re no F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald.

When I finally finished my design I headed towards the main stage to listen to The Head and the Heart and the world was okay again. Two Door Cinema Club, half the set of Future and

Royksopp, surviving Martin Garrix and running to see DJ Snake I was sure every ounce of energy in me was gone.

Lady Gaga was set to go on in a few moments and just my luck, a group of high schoolers stood behind me. To all the parents at Coachella, if you want to bring your child to Coachella and treat her like an adult, then don’t blame me for treating her like one too.

If she thinks getting drunk and annoying the people around her, including her friends, is cool then she’ll definitely think it’s super cool when I shove her to the ground like the adult she is.

Coachella isn’t Coachella without dealing with a couple of intoxicated people. To the 30 year old guy who would not stop talking during Lorde’s performance until my band of fellow sisters cussed you out, to the girl who didn’t understand I didn’t want to use your brush as a mic, and to the guy who didn’t understand no one wanted to dance with you, thank you for making my first, and definitely not my last, Coachella memorable.

At Laguna Hills High School, walking into the women’s restroom is now nothing short of a positive experience. “What if we show more love” was what inspired Sabrina Astle, 17, to create dozens of signs, each unique with expressions of positive affirmations.

It began with Astle’s involvement with the school’s kindness club. She wrote signs in her spare time to spread kindness across campus. Slowly accumulating they began to pile up until she knew the time was right.

The campus theme of the week was “what if we show more love” and Astle knew that it was the perfect time to hang the signs.

The reaction was overwhelming to her and the rest of the students at LHHS. “I hope that these women gain confidence,” Astle said. “For someone to walk into the school bathroom and see this I hope to make someone’s day a little bit easier

and encourage students to keep coming to school.”

Not only has this affected high school teens but also a local mother and her two children, who had stopped by the school over the weekend, and made a quick stop to the restroom. She was so impressed that she posted photos of the restroom to her Face-

book page, Pantsuit Nation. Within a few days it hit 52,000 likes and 1,000 comments according to Babble.

With her overnight Internet fame, articles were posted accusing Astle of taking down mirrors in the bathroom when in fact there were never any mirrors to begin with. The whole point of the day was to show more love to yourself and others said Astle, not taking down mirrors in the bathroom.

“You can read a bunch of those signs but if you can’t accept them and look at yourself in the mirror and believe it then that’s counterproductive.”

Since freshman year she has kept a journal of positive thoughts or things that make her feel good. When Astle would ever feel down she could look back at it with a feeling of empowerment.

“I tried to think of things that I wanted to see and that’s what inspired me to create these posters,” said Astle.

Never did she think this action would call so much attention to the media. She said she even interviewed Ryan Seacrest over the phone. With all the political turmoil happening in the world Astle believes this is why so much attention was drawn to the act.

“I think the world right now needs to hear something like this to bring hope,” Astle said.

H. C. Anderson’s ‘Princess and the Pea’ comes to life McKinney Theatre presents modern twist to old Scandinavian love story SHELBY JONES CONTRIBUTOR

“Once Upon a Mattress” takes on a comical depiction of an old fairytale. Saddleback’s theatre proves a modern twist to the original story “The Princess and the Pea.” The Department of Theatre Arts at Saddleback College presents “Once Upon a Mattress,” a fairytale play which provides a whimsical tone to the storyline of “The Princess and the Pea” by Hans Christian Anderson. Located in the McKinney Theatre, “Once Upon a Mattress” is shown from April 7 through 15.

Don’t be alarmed by the piercing shrieks rooted from the McKinney Theatre this weekend and next.

The shrilling song “Shy” sang by Stephanie LeHane is an ironic, obnoxious, and amusing musical number that appropriately introduces her character Winnifred.

In this late 1950s musical, Queen Aggravain has taken full control of her kingdom by enforcing the rule that none may marry until her son Prince Dauntless marries a genuine princess.

Meanwhile, the mute King is cursed by a spell and Lady Larken is pregnant with Sir Harry’s baby. Determined to marry Lady Larken, Harry goes beyond the hills to the swamps to find a fit princess for Dauntless.

The Queen is horrified by his findings of a princess, Winnifred, due to her strong and outward demeanor. Throughout the play, the constant battle between Dauntless’ desire to marry Winnifred, or Fred, and his stubborn mother offer a great deal of farce and emotion.

Furthermore, Taylor Stephenson musically directs the audience through the play’s amusing and emotional touch.

Allie Crupi brought the perfect snarky attitude to her character as the Queen, bringing out the humor in multiple scenes throughout the play.

The cast of characters make the storyline believable and highly enjoyable. The dialogue between each of the roles successfully

takes the audience directly into the raucous yet melodic relationships.

Paige Vanderwarker and Mason Burt were both notable characters in the play as well. Vanderwarker played the role of the Wizard and delightfully brought a good portion of the story’s badinage to the table with her lively facial expressions and remarks.

Burt, as the Jester, was not a prominent role in the play until his solo musical and dancing act, Very Soft Shoes, that stole the audience’s hearts with his capability to implement such character and skill into one act.

This acerbically funny version of “Once Upon a Mattress” would easily be enjoyed by adult and younger audiences.

‘The Assignment’ goes both ways A twisted and bizarre plot involving gender reassignment buzzes at box office last week ★★★★ COLIN REEF

“The Assignment” was released on Friday, April 7, and was directed by the well-known Walter Hill, considered by many to be among the elite filmmakers of this generation.

“The Assignment” entered the box office with an unsettling buzz about the premise and its impact on the transgender community it was likely to offend (for obvious reasons as opposed to others).

But the outcry and anger from critics and filmgoers alike, doesn’t live up to the hype in my opinion. This film does have its moments of bad execution and could easily be considered, at best, a B-list film, but the sheer power of Hill and his team deserve credit when considering the skillful acting of Dr. Rachel Kay (Sigourney Weaver) and Frank Kitchen (Michelle Rodriguez).

And what is this touchy premise that has the transgender community in a debatable fluster you ask?

Protagonist Frank Kitchen is a rough and tumble hitman from San Francisco who is tasked with neutralizing Dr. Rachel Kay’s brother. Kay was recently fired and terminated for conducting rogue experiments that many considered to be malpractice.

STARE DOWN: Michelle Rodriguez stars in “The Assignment,” a controversial action film.

In her distress, she seeks the help of criminal Honest John Hartunian (Anthony LaPaglia) to abduct Kitchen and bring him to her secret laboratory where she will perform gender reassignment surgery.

The point of this seemingly bizarre premise is backed up by the notion that this surgery will totally dismantle Kitchen’s desire to kill people. After realizing what has happened, Frank decides to go on an all out vendetta, embarking on a killing spree to seek revenge on every person involved in this travesty.

It is understandable why some criticize this film but the “The Assignment” is nowhere near as offensive as most may seem. For one thing, to suggest that Frank Kitchen characterizes or generalizes all transgendered people is ludicrous because his physical attributes change very little.

Also, there is little to no forced emphasis on the mannerisms of before and after the surgery. It is merely a film with forced gender reassignment surgery that is creating and perpetuating a stereotype for simple shits and giggles. In other words, the uproar isn’t convincing and people just want to stir the pot due to the social climate of such a topic.

That aside, there are a few cinematic errors that are more unsettling and offensive to any movie buff. First, in the few scenes where Michelle Rodriguez plays her male self she does have some interesting makeup.

Through the little amounts of makeup, you could clearly see the outline of a famous hollywood actress.

Even at first glance, a blind person could easily see that a women was playing this role.

The beard she had was extremely unconvincing and she

did little to nothing to change the feminine tone in her voice.

I couldn’t help but chuckle at one particular scene where they show his/her genitalia, not the movie’s finest moment...

Once she gets the reassignment surgery her performance greatly improves. We have seen Michelle Rodriguez do some pretty badass acting, showing moments of brute force in movies such as the “Fast and Furious” franchise.

She continues her gritty persona in this film which make for some pretty high octane action.

On the other hand, Sigourney Weaver portrays a condescending and revenge-ridden doctor to the tee.

I could easily see this film being revered by the many critics that have already come out, no pun intended, and claim that its offensive nature makes it any less of a film.

Gracias Madre is one of the first restaurants to incorporate marijuana, specifically CBD, into its cocktails. Not only are they one of the first to create a CBD cocktail, but also to have mastered the art of vegan Mexican cuisine.

The idea of Gracias Madre stemmed from a visit to Mexico. Its fundamental building blocks were to offer organic Mexican food to the community and to honor mothers who have worked tirelessly in the kitch-

ens of Mexico.

This is where the name Gracias Madre is born. Each dish on the menu is locally sourced and 100 percent organic.

CBD is hemp oil that is legal and not psychoactive, meaning it won’t get you high. Studies have shown numerous benefits in conjunction with consuming CBD oil.

This oil acts as a natural painkiller by playing a role in the control of synaptic transmission in pain pathways. It is also beneficial for the skin by inhibiting the production of sebum, which can be a solution to people suffering from acne.

There are three cocktails listed on their menu that contain CBD and are used for its health benefits and unique flavor profile, according to Gracias Madre. Each of these cocktails are priced at $20, and the oil is branded as 100 percent organic.

It was comprised of tequila, lime, agave, mint, matcha and topped off with five drops of CBD oil. To create the frothy effect without using egg whites, aquafaba is substituted.

Rolled Fashioned is a high vibes twist of the classic old fashion. With bourbon, aromatic bitters, and the smoky flavor of mescal to round off this cocktail.

It’s then garnished with a vegan churro, which one could put to their lips in hopes of it becoming a blunt.

These cocktails can also be ordered at its sister restaurant, Café Gratitude, in Newport Beach.

All three of these cocktails are a creative twist on weed culture, and are extremely pleasing to the pallet. After I finished my cocktail, sitting through my lunch was a pleasurable experience, also noticing the effects of CBD.

CannaCoconutberry Smoothie Serves 2 Ingredients: 2 tbsp. of canna-coconut oil 1 large frozen banana, sliced 1 1/2-2 cups of coconut milk 2 cups of frozen strawberries 4 tbsp. of pomegranate juice Directions: Begin by heating the canna-coconut oil in a small skillet. Then add the sliced bananas and sauté for about four minutes, stirring occasionally. Allow the oil and banana slices to cool.

Then place the coconut milk, frozen strawberries, and pomegranate juice into a blender.

Add the sauté bananas into the blender. Make sure to scrape the remaining oil into the blender as well.

Puree the ingredients together until smooth. Pour into two cups and enjoy during a hot summer day.

Gauchos tame Riverside Tigers Saddleback was relentless and firing on all cylinders against conference rival in Friday’s game COLIN REEF

The Saddleback softball team notched a crucial win on Friday by a score of 8-0 over the Riverside City College Tigers at Trani Field.

Starting pitcher, Nelsa Delagente, threw a two hit shutout against the Tigers while the team’s offense fired on all cylinders. The Gauchos mercied the Tigers after only four and a half innings of play.

The Gauchos came into Friday’s game tied for third place with Riverside in the Orange Empire Conference standings.

The Gauchos came on strong early in the bottom of the first inning scoring two quick runs.

Freshman Haleigh Wilkerson, was able to capitalize on an unforced error by Riverside’s shortstop Kailee Gilbert. Wilkerson reached first base with ease while also scoring the Gauchos first two runs.

They would closeout the top of the second inning giving up zero hits from their opponent.

They would then take a commanding 5-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning scoring three more runs on to their already growing lead.

SHUTOUT: The Gauchos softball team slid into Friday’s game searching for a much needed win to propel them into third place in the Orange Empire Coast conference.

The Tigers gave up two costly errors that inning while the Gauchos had runners on base and in scoring position. The Tigers couldn’t get out of the inning after getting two quick outs.

Starting catcher Reis Birkett and Wilkerson hit back-to-back singles in that inning scoring the three runners that had reached on errors.

After a scoreless third inning from both teams, the Gauchos and Tigers moved into the fourth inning. Drew Moore, shortstop for the Gauchos, led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a

line-drive to center field.

Carley Buonarigo was up next and able to draw a walk. After a fielder’s choice out by the next batter both Moore and Buonarigo advanced to second and third base. Once more, Wilkerson approached the plate and powerfully struck the ball to the shortstop where it was mishandled once more.

Another Riverside error increased the deficit to 6-0. Power hitter and third baseman for the Gauchos, Amanda Padilla, struck a hard line-drive down the left side of the field scoring another run. The inning would end but not

before the Gauchos scored one more run on a fielder’s choice.

Nelsa Delagente looked absolutely impressive on the mound for the Gauchos striking out six Tigers on two hits and zero runs earned.

She helps her Gauchos cruise to an easy victory. Saddleback is now 19-12 in their overall record and 9-7 in Orange Empire Conference play.

The Saddleback Softball team have three home games remaining on the season. They play Mt. San Jacinto on Monday, Orange Coast College the following Friday, and Cypress the Monday after that.

Saddleback triumphs in Central Valley Defensive errors, timid pitching and poor plate appearances help Gauchos COLIN REEF

The Saddleback College baseball team returned from their three day long tournament in the Central Valley. They finished up with a 9-2 victory over them at Bakersfield College last Thursday.

The first two innings were locked in a stalemate as both teams were unable to generate any runs batted in from their offense. Both teams only combined for four totals hits as they entered into the top of the third inning.

Mike Jarvis was the next and after getting down in the count he singles to left field advancing the base runner to third. The Gauchos are sitting pretty with only one out and runners on first and third.

Sophomore outfielder, Jerry Carrillo, calmly steps to the plate and manages to get an RBI on a fielder’s choice putting the Gauchos up 1-0. The Gauchos end the inning with a deep fly out but are able to put one up on the board.

The Gauchos notched two more arned runs in the top of the fifth and sixth innings leading Bakerfield by a score of 3-2.

for the Gauchos, was stuck in his only rut of the game when the bottom of the sixth rolled around.

Michael Carr would get replaced by Hunter Johnson in the sixth inning, who quickly walked a batter and was replaced

by Devin Sutorius.

The sophomore from Capistrano Valley Christian maintained his composure through the inning, striking out the next two batters to preserve a 3-2 lead. In the top of the seventh Jarvis was able to get on base with only one out.

Andrew Wilson then steps to the plate and launches a bomb to right field scoring Jarvis and landing him safely on third base for the only triple of the game.

Bakersfield continues to struggle at fielding the ball when Brett Auerbach reached first on an error by their first baseman.

The Gauchos would end the inning scoring two more runs to push their lead to a staggering 6-2.

More insurance would unfold for the Gauchos when they scored three more runs in the final two innings. They happened to score an impressive three runs on only a total of five hits in the inning.

Adam Gordon finished 3-for4 with two RBI’s on the afternoon. He was joined by Clark and Brett O’Toole, who also had three hits on the day as Saddleback dished out 15 hits. Bakersfield had a total of six defensive errors while giving up five unearned runs.

The saddleback baseball team have improved to an overall record of 22-12 and record of 8-7 in conference play. They are 14-4 when playing at home and 8-8 in away games.

They have accumulated 186 runs in 34 games and have averaged .271 batting percentage with a slugging percentage of .364.
