The 2012 South Orange County Community College District Board of Trustees Area 7 candidates up for election Nov. 6 will participate in a forum Oct. 18 from 3 p.m.– 4:30 p.m. in the Ronald Reagan Board of Trustees Room located in the HS building at Saddleback College. Here they will answer questions from the public and ones given by the board while presenting their policies and plans for the district. Candidates running for election to represent Area 7 (Mission Viejo) include Jan Serrantino Cox, Timothy Jemal, Mike Moodian, and John S. Williams. “[My] general advice to candidates is to go and meet the public and learn as much as you can about the colleges and district,” board president Nancy Padberg said, who has over 14 years of experience as a board member. The Board of trustees holds seven positions, eight including a student representative who is elected separately. These positions include a president, vice president, clerk, and four members, and each one of these live in the area they represent. Members are elected at-large to staggered fouryear terms, where voting takes place every two years, for certain positions, by the Orange County general public. Board members duties include ensuring the benefit of all academic and educational programs while establishing legislature that preserves and protects them. A large portion of their work is also comprised of maintaining financial stability within the district. “Candidates for the Board position must be

The most challenging aspects to being a board member are being available for as many college and district functions as possible while keeping up with your own busy professional life,” President Padberg said.

Tech: Technology bogs down and crowds student attention spans.
Millions will be set to “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” as the largest earthquake drill in United States history, the Great California Shakeout, occurs on Thursday Oct. 18 at 10:18 a.m. The Shakeout is expected to have the largest participation in its four-year history with 9.2 million participants in California, and a total of 13.8 million participants in 12 states, two United States territories, British Columbia and Southern Italy. While the scale is quite large, the drill will consist of the same actions as any person growing up in California has gone through over the years: drop to the ground, take cover underneath something like a table, and holding on for the duration of the earthquake or drill. “It’s cool that that many people will do this and it’s
important,” Naya Rodriguez, 18, said, “but it sounds like it will be just like any other earthquake drill.” The drill should last only 20 minutes at the most and will start at 10:18 a.m. “At 10:18 [in the morning], the earthquake notice will sound through all the phones on campus to tell people that it is just a drill,” Saddleback College police officer Jim Pyle said. “People still in the building will be evacuated after the drop and cover and people from CERTs [Community Emergency Response Teams] in green helmets will guide people out of the buildings.” “Once the building is cleared, people will be allowed to return to their classes.” The start time of 10:18 a.m. is to coincide with the numerical representation of the date of Oct. 18. This will continue in the following years with drills occurring on Oct. 17, 2013 at 10:17 a.m., Oct. 16, 2014 at

According to an online article by Jeff Bullas, social media coach, one in every 13 people on Earth are on Facebook and also 48 percent of 18 to 34 year olds check Facebook right when they wake up. The growing number of social networking sites leads us to question if it is affecting the attention span of college students, who often look down at their phones when they lose interest in class. Kelsey Atkinson, kinesiology major uses Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram and also a mobile application that offers the ability to send friends pictures called “Snap Chat.” She admitted social networking accounts for 60 percent of her internet usage and 40 percent included other uses, such a research. “I feel like Facebook interconnects everything because you use it for everything, [ex. school and work],” Atkinson said. Facebook has not only become a place for friends to chat and share photos with one another but it is also a place for business and schoolwork. It is no longer uncommon to ‘friend’ classmates on Face-
book instead of taking down their phone number. Also the use of marketing on Facebook has become predominant. According to http://www. © 2012 ECA smartinsights.com, 90 percent of marketers do some form of content marketing, and 74 percent of that is the use of social media (excluding blogs). Jessica Chene, oceanography and art major, uses only Facebook and mainly uses the Internet for research and playing online games. She also admitted to using her phone during class time on occasion. It has become difficult for college professors who have a constant battle between giving students fair freedom to use social networking devices, but also maintain the attention of the students during class time. Saddleback students were asked whether it was rude to be on their phone while your friend is talking and they agreed it was; but those same students admitted to texting during class while the professor is talking. The growth of social media and technology has lead students to be faced with more decisions on how to use or abuse this growing technology.

10:16 a.m. and so on. 19-year-old business major Ryan Schneider thinks the creative time will make the drill have little effect on the Saddleback campus. “My class finishes at 10:15 [in the morning],” Schneider said, “so, I’ll probably be in my car or outside when this goes down like a lot of people.” Pyle said that those already out of the buildings will be told to not enter or re-enter the buildings. Additionally, classes that are testing will be allowed to stay in their classrooms to continue.
