■ LOT 4 Wednesday, Sept. 21, 1:34 p.m.

A traffic accident occured in LOT 4. Officers reported on the case. Neither of the subjects were injured.

■ SCIENCE/MATH Wednesday, Sept. 21, 4:38 p.m.

Subjects made a 911 call/ hang up from the north elevator. Officers responded but the subjects were not found.

SADDLEBACK COLLEGE 2008 TIME FLIES: Tod Burnett hosts a “meet your president” out in the quad to give students the opportunity to get to know the new president.

■ SCIENCE/MATH Monday, Sept. 26, 9:26 a.m.

Officers responded to an unknown alarm going off in the building. When they arrived the alarm had stopped and they were unable to find the source.

■ BGS Wednesday, Sept. 28, 8:55 a.m.

Medical aid was provided to a student in 255. A report was taken and the subject was supplied with the necessary medicial attention.

■ SCIENCES BUILDING Thursday, Sept. 29, 6:07 p.m.

Officers had a patrol check; found nothing to report.

■ OBSERVATORY Friday, Sept. 30, 2:53 p.m.

A welfare check was preformed. Officers completed their check and everyone was OK.

President announces retirement

After nine years with Saddleback College, president Tod A. Burnett announced his plan to retire in the summer of 2017.

Burnett has served as president since 2008. The typical tenure for a president in the state of California is three years, and Burnett’s nine years is a true testament to his dedication to Saddleback and its success.

“We been so successful with our faculty, staff, management, students, community we’ve really transformed Saddleback college over these last eight years,” Burnett said.

Burnett said in the Annual State of the College report, where he covers the year’s top achievements and the hopes of

the coming year, that his proudest accomplishment was higher admission rates, the 4,000 students who transfer to four-year colleges and the grand opening of the new Sciences Building.

When Burnett leaves his post as president many wonder about the future of Saddleback.

Student success is always at the forefront of Burnett’s vision.

“I really hope the momentum throughout the campus continues because it really has been energized everywhere on campus,” said Burnett on his hopes for the future of Saddleback College.

In his nine years of hard work and dedication he has placed Saddleback in a position for continuing success. The search to replace Burnett will be a long process, thus the timing of his announcement. He stated that doing so would ensure a smooth transition to new leadership and finish off the school year.

“His leadership and care for our community has allowed for the growth of many of our cam-

pus’ services, including the student life and VETS program,” said Lucky Hendrix, Associated Student Government President, in the press release.

One may envision retirement as long relaxing days by the pool, golf, endless vacation however Burnett has a different idea. His future goal is to take his leadership skills and experience to a place where a new challenge and vision is needed.

What will Tod A. Burnett miss the most about Saddleback College?

“Oh that’s easy, the students, staff, faculty and community here!” Burnett said.

“I really hope the momentum throughout the campus contines.”

Sciences Building has grand opening Saddleback students and teachers joing together to celebrate the new building

A monumental new structure, showcasing sleek, modern designs and a multitude of classes, has been built in honor of all sciences. With the introduction of the new Sciences Building, students no longer have to use the Math and Sciences Building to complete their courses.

Instead, they can stay focused in a brand-new, comforting environment with many locations that allow them to sit down and study before class.

On Sept. 29, there was a grand opening that helped celebrate that for which this building stands and everyone who helped this dream become a reality. Tod Burnett, president of Saddleback College, explained the purpose and design of this building.

“The building was designed to carry on Saddleback’s proud tradition of supplying student research. [It has] 117 sections of science classes serving over 3000 students. [The building] is truly an environmental marvel, with eco friendly design and construction that earned a prestigious leadership in energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold rating from the U.S. Green Building Council.” These ratings gauge buildings according to how environmentally sustaniable they are.

Science faculty and staff members collaborated with C.W. Driver to help make this building a fully functional learn-

this project since it began back in 2009 said that this space is also designed to “allow students to get together and study.”

C.W. Driver stated that, “Each of the three floors contain shared support, office, teaching and gathering spaces woven between the labs - further promoting interdisciplinary communication.”

Education defines every floor, which house certain studies of science. On the first floor you have laboratories dedicated to physics, astronomy, geology, oceanography, and paleontology.

The second floor provides students with anatomy, biology, biochemistry, physiology, and microbiology laboratories and lastly, the third floor is dedicated to chemistry. Altogether the building holds up to 26 laboratories and five classrooms.

Many people attending the grand opening were satisfied bringing up its interesting design and abundance of space.

“It rocks,” said Dr. David Bugay, VC, HR & Employer Employee relations. “This is the future, it will help students advance quickly” Over all this modern building sports a clean, rectangular theme that may inspire and house many great minds of the future. NEW HEIGHTS: The new science building stands tall and proud at Saddleback’s celebration in its honor. ing facility, whilst still leaving little impact on the environmental.

From the entrance of the building, you are greeted with a collage of windows that lean over each other and create an inverted slope. On one side, these windows become narrower from the top-down, giving it a box cutter shape. Then, on the opposite side, there is a large section of the building that protrudes outward and houses Chemistry classes.

Angled walls, which somewhat resemble the end of a vacuum nozzle, welcome visitors as they walk through a row of tripled double doors. Inside, there is a spacious opening that grows as you look up because of the sloping windows.

As visitors go up stairs, each floor holds a ring of classes that line the outside walls of the building. At the top floor there is a bridge that leads to the Quad.

In her speech at the grand opening Debra Fitzsimons, Interim Chancellor, mentions that connection between the front entrance courtyard and the quad reflect continuity between stu-

dents and staff.

Achieving the (LEED) Gold rating had a large influence on the design of the building. C.W Driver the construction company responsible for building the sciences building, stated that it was “Designed to achieve LEED Gold certification.

It boasts sustainable features comprising a network-controlled lighting system, which includes occupancy sensors to minimize lighting electrical loads, advanced HVAC systems, expansive window openings and a large sky lighting in the atrium to promote day lighting and reduce the need for ambient electrical lighting.”

T.J Prendergast, a Trustee who was given a tour of the building during its construction, was told that space is an important aspect. All space is utilized, labs and items are stored accordingly in order to give students and teachers more room to learn.

Large open space in the center of the building “helps move air flow,” making it easier to cool the entire building.

Although the new iOS 10 update did not come with an Emoji dictionary, it still came with an incredible amount of meaning.

Starting from the single parent emojis, leading into same sex marriage, followed by women empowerment and ending with the simple use of guns.

While Apple brings in many new aspects of our everyday life into the emojis we often use in our iMessage conversations the one that has the most controversy is the neon green water gun that replaced our previous pistol.

Once you click update for the new iOS 10 software to be downloaded into your iPhone you will be agreeing to Apple’s powerful statements that most likely was not mentioned in the terms and agreements.

“More than one hundred new and redesigned emoji characters will be available to iPhone and iPad users this fall with iOS 10.

This exciting update brings more gender options to existing characters, including new female athletes and professionals, adds beautiful redesigns of popular emoji, a new rainbow flag and more family options,” said Apple Newsroom.

Is Apple trying to make the point that guns should not be used in back and forth foreplay through social media and iMessage?

Maybe Apple is trying to change our way of thinking about the diverse world that is growing all around us by making a point that guns should not be used as toys or a funny gesture, but as a powerful weapon that should be used to protect ourselves and other people around us.

Instead of the idea that Apple simply is just trying to make the once often used emjoi into a “beautiful redesign”.

The world may never know without an emoji dictionary.

Maybe that will be the next update feature, another pointless app with definitions of each and every emoji.

California has just enacted new tobacco laws requiring tobacco users to be a minimum of 21 years of age. Now Californians are about to vote on whether or not they can legally posses marijuana at the same age recreationally. The California state ballot on Nov. 8 will include Proposition 64, proposing that the usage and possession of marijuana be legalized for adults 21 and older for recreational purposes.

This proposition could also be a significant source of tax revenue, that could have a positive impact on California. This would create two new types of tax: cultivation and retail.

According to TIME, Marijuana alone raised more 70 million in tax money compared to the 40 million raised in alcohol in Colorado, which is one of the four states that has already legalized marijuana recreationally and has started to receive the positive benefits coming from it.

Not only that, but the usage of marijuana does less harm to individuals than the usage of tobacco or alcohol.

Whether the usage of marijuana is apart of your daily life or not, one should really think about the benefits the state can receive from the legalization of weed. Not only the state, but it could have a fiscal impact nationally.

California has the sixth

lariatnews.com largest economy in the world and if marijuana becomes legalized here, then it could potentially be a huge influence to the rest of the country.

The initiative exceeded 402,468 projected valid signatures qualifying it. The initiative statute imposes that a 15 percent sales tax would be equal to the retail sales of marijuana. The state cultivation taxes on marijuana would be $9.25 per ounce of flowers and $2.75 per ounce of leaves.

With the assumption of at least 7 billion a year of retail sales of marijuana, which is extremely likely to happen, there could be more than 1 billion increase of tax revenue annually.

It’s time for California to hop on the bandwagon with Colorado, Washington, Oregon and Alaska and to take advantage of what marijuana really has to offer. And let’s be real here, we all know how California will surpass sales when it comes to being apart of the pot world.

This November might be the real deal when it comes to the pot business, and this poll is expecting about 60 percent support from Californians this ballot.

As stated in the official voter information guide, the pros of the legalization of marijuana is that “[legalizing marijuana]creates a safe, legal system for adult use of marijuana. It controls, regulates and taxes marijuana use, and has the nation’s strictest protections for children. It provides billions for afterschool programs, job training, drug treatment, and cracking down on impaired driving.”

Restrictions will be active if this proposition becomes approved and final after November, these include: marijuana usage while driving or in a public place (other than business licensed for purpose), growing in area that is unlocked or visible to public and providing marijuana for minors under 21 or non-medical users.

Activities that will be allowed if proposition is approved and final: Smoking marijuana in private home or licensed business, possession of up to 28.5 grams and eight grams of concentrated marijuana, growing up to six marijuana plants within private home and giving away up to 28.5 grams and up to eight grams of concentrated marijuana.

National Anthem pros/cons Polorizing issue seen as peaceful to some, or sign of disrespect to others MEAGHAN CORKILL LIFE EDITOR

PROS Colin Kaepernick created in what some call a “peaceful protest.” This could be because when some people think the U.S. is not living up to their ideals of freedom or justice for all, refusing to stand for the national anthem may be appropriate and justified.

“I’m not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color...,” Kaepernick said. “To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.”

Many other athletes have since refused to stand for the national anthem for similar reasons.

“The message is I’m against social injustice,”said Denver Broncos wide receiver Brandon Marshall. “I’m not against the military or police or America at all.”

Another positive to this protest is that people of fame refusing to stand for the “Star-Spangled Banner,” it shocks people into paying attention and creating conversation.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell originally disagreed with those actions, but later praised what he called a movement from protest to progress.

“I truly respect our players wanting to speak out and change the community... We want them to use that voice,” Goodall said.

To sum it all up, not standing for the National Anthem is in fact a legal form of peaceful protest, which is a First Amendment right.

A letter signed by 35 U.S. veterans said, “Far from disrespecting our troops, there is no finer form of appreciation for our sacrifice than for Americans to enthusiastically exercise their freedom of speech.”

Freedom of Speech is so important in today’s society. Issues need to be addressed and talked about, or things will never get solved.

CONS All around the United States, there is a sweeping argument about what should be doing when the Pledge of Allegiance or national anthem comes on.

Some believe that everyone should partake in these activities, and others believe that they are expressing their freedom by not participating and sometimes even sitting down or taking a knee when the “Star-Spangled Banner” is playing.

The most famous example we have seen recently is when Colin Kaepernick decided that he was not going to stand for the flag because he did not want to show that he was standing for the questionable line of “liberty and justice for all.”

The individuals that don’t participate in the anthem are called disrespectful. Many people in the armed forces of the United States take great action in singing the national anthem.

Carole Isham, a great-great-great granddaughter of the writer of the national anthem (Francis Scott Key), stated that “it just blows my mind that somebody like (Kaepernick) would do what he does to dishonor the flag of this country and the national anthem when we have young men and women overseas fighting for this country, people that have died for this country.”

Drew Brees, New Orleans Saints quarterback, supported Kaepernick’s message, but thought his delivery was all wrong.

“It’s an oxymoron that you’re sitting down, disrespecting that flag that has given you the freedom to speak out,” he said.

Not standing for the national anthem is an ineffective way to promote a cause.

“As a general matter, when it comes to the flag the national anthem and the meaning that holds for our men and women in uniform and those who’ve fought for us – that is a tough thing for them to get past to then hear what his [Kaepernick’s] deeper concerns are,” President Obama said.

Refusing to stand for the national anthem angers U.S. citizens and creates division in our country. Many fans of Kaepernick – well, no longer fans – are burning his jerseys to show their opposition for his actions.

One video of a jersey on fire posted on Facebook was captioned.

“He says he’s oppressed making $126 million. Well, Colin, here’s my salute to you,” the vlogger said.

Saddleback College speech and debate students argue about the record-breaking debate between presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump

ho would have thought that this year would be another record breaking moment when over 80 million Americans tuned in to see Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump square off in the first presidential debate.

In the 60 years that the presidential debates have televised, never have so many red, blue, and in between citizens been so enthralled.

“It’s like the Super Bowl but for the apocalypse #debates,” said actor Zach Braff in a tweet he posted the night of the presidential debate.

Statistical analysis of the 2014 presidential debate shows that, “2014 Youth Turnout and Youth Registration Rates Lowest Ever Recorded,” shown by The Center for Information & Research on Civic Learning and Engagement. To put in perspective, only 19.9 percent of the 18-29-year-old demographic cast ballots that year.

However, based off the viewership of the debate, which aired across 13 major TV channels that carried it live, this presidential election may prove to show voting like we’ve never seen. Hopefully influencing our younger voters.

Three days after the debate, Saddleback students in Professor Shawn O’Rourke’s Speech and Debate class, voiced their opinion amongst one another.

“I thought as much as I enjoy hearing Trump speak,” said Westley Stone sarcastically, “it felt a little biased toward him, like he was getting attacked by Lester Holt more than Hillary.”

Stone further noted that, the cause could have been due to Trump’s constant interruptions in the debate towards Clinton.

What the class additionally discussed was that throughout the whole debate, Clinton was interrupted about 50 times total within the 90-minute debate. Trump in comparison, a mere 17 times.

Fellow student Sean Kim weighed into this topic, stating that he thought it showed a lack of order from the fellow broadcasting team that conducted the event.

“Trump kept on talking well after the minute he was given,” Kim said “the broad-

casters themselves are at fault.”

Trump’s interruptions, led to topic of discussion of whether or not past presidential debates have occurred with constant intrusions between nominees. The answer, “yes.”

The detailed questions that are presented during the debate, pose for a part justification as to why there may be interruptions amongst delegates. Nonetheless, it showed Donald Trump in a way in which the class saw as defensive.

“Maybe his arguments might not have validity, or the arguments that were being made against him had validity,” said Christo-

As Westley Stone put it, a lack of respect was missing from Mr. Trump, further making his argument that Trump lacked class.

“If he’s going to be disrespectful to a fellow running opposition, what’s he going to be like with our allies,” Stone said.

Shortly after the debate, the National Public Radio released an article, fact checking both Clinton and Trump. NPR’s editorial team whom specifically cover national security, immigration, business, foreign policy and more, annotated the debate as it was

taking place. The results showed that both candidates had many holes in their polices.

Many either completely wrong, or contrary to what they said in the past.

“I was screaming at the TV. There was a point where he [Trump] said I’m more calm than Hillary,” said Carlos Vera, “but he was getting more and more aggressive the whole time.”

Vera didn’t forget to mention that while Trump postulated lies, so did Clinton.

“They were both huge liars, and you couldn’t take them seriously,” Vera said.

Just as NPR editor’s fact checked the de-

bate, so did Mr. Vera, expressing that he had to constantly check online to find out if Clinton and Trump said the truth about policies, such as New York’s Stop-and-Frisk practice.

“What really made it look particularly bad [the interruptions] was that Trump said ‘I have a better temperament than Hillary’ and the audience laughed at him,” said Peter Damgaard.

Professor O’Rourke put forth an interesting argument, leaving the question of whether or not there was a gender component to Trump’s aggressive nature towards Clinton.

The fact on the matter is that, as Sean Kim professed, Trump has a demeaning subjugation towards women, and lacks respect.

Putting any biases about the candidates aside, looking at it from a “rhetoric viewpoint,” and not “politically,” Hillary may have won the debate.

“In regards to the debate as a whole, regardless of whose policies you agree with, if you look at it from how they were debating and their knowledge and preparedness going into the debate, Hillary clearly won. Most mainstream media would agree with that,” Damgaard said.

Democrat, Republican, or non registered voter, the overwhelming concern in the Speech and Debate class was whether or not the United States is able to trust the next chief and commander to win this election.

Problematic themes such as email scandals, and not releasing tax return information, pose for a characteristic devalue in our candidates, which is not something Saddleback students look for in a president.

Interpretive dancin’ in the hallway ‘Bodies and Ink’ celebrates National Banned Books Week ZARA FLORES SPORTS EDITOR

The dance, music, speech and theatre arts departments presented the “Bodies and Ink” performance in the Learning Resource Center at Saddleback College to celebrate National Banned Books Week on Friday.

Diedre Cavazzi, artistic director, acted as a guide and led the audience through all three floors of the LRC, showcasing student and faculty performances.

There were 11 pieces in total ranging from children’s books to classics and were all pieces of literature that were either banned or challenged in the past. The performance also features an original piece composed by Scott Farthing.

“I wanted there to be variety.

We wanted to appeal to the audience,” Cavazzi said. “This (the library) is a space where we associate study, books, reading so to actually take a work that’s all based on banned literature and to set it in the library instead of on a stage seems absolutely appropriate.”

The crowd was able to immerse themselves into the performances given they weren’t limited to seats. The pieces varied in display, some on bookshelves or staircases surrounded by the audience, others more private and intimate, being peered in on by the audience, and others where the audience moved through.

Act) accessible and audiences are kept to a maximum of 50 people to allow every individual the fullest experience.

The production was 80 minutes long but one of this magnitude and complexity took a year to prepare.

“One year ago I started setting up meetings and getting permission to use the space,” Cavazzi said. “I had to meet with all of the deans, get permission, write up proposals and I had to get approval from the college and permission from campus police (for rehearsals.)”

Cavazzi started planning Bodies and Ink last October and had her auditions in May. The dancers were cast and began rehearsals in July, when the LRC was closed on weekends.

While rehearsing and creating all the pieces’ choreography, Cavazzi spoke with the dancers and they all took the time to understand the literature they were working with.

“We’ve all danced together nmerous times, we’re like a big family,” said Ashanti Robinson, one of the dancers. “We wanted to bring these stories to life

through emotions and music.

And Diedre really inspired up… she was tough love. ” Some pieces are graphic and Cavazzi was sure to offer a disclaimer before those pieces.

“I wanted to do ‘Speak’ to try to tell other peoples’ stories… and have people open up, seek help, not hold anything in,” said performer and dancer Marissa Guillen.

Robinson and Guillen shared the goals for this event as well as praising the efforts of Cavazzi.

“Diedre really inspired us and pushed us,” Guillen said.

“She sees that we have a certain standard and sometimes we don’t see it but she can, in us. ” “Angels of the Arts, a scholarship organization, gave me the funding so I could put this on,” Cavazzi said. “Otherwise, it’s very hard to mount something like this that spans multiple departments.”

The final performances of Bodies and Ink will be Oct. 7 and Oct. 8 at 7:30 p.m. and Oct. 9 at 2:30 p.m. in the LRC. Tickets are available online or at the door.

Banksy viewing in OC for time NATALIA POURAZAR OPINION EDITOR

Pageant of the Vandals has made its way to Artist Republic gallery in Laguna Beach where the focus of the event is the viewing of one of Banksy’s original pieces. Along with many street artists being recognized for their miraculous tagging’s and street paintings they have done in many cities.

This event will be held from August 20 to October 20 and it will showcase other talented street artists: Ben Eine, Zio Ziegler, Jeff Gillete, Beau Stanton, Chad Hasegawa, Lucy Sparrow, Ellannah Sadwik and Jack Fox. Banksy’s original piece at the gallery is called “Haight Street Rat,” which is a large stenciled painting of a rat holding a marker and wearing a Che Guevera cap.

Brian Grief saved this street piece in 2010 after realizing what an influence Banksy’s art left on the public. He was able to persuade the owner to let him save and restore the painting.

Banksy had several paintings

in San Francisco, many of which were removed and destroyed by the city. This is one of the few pieces that was saved and is now very well known, said Stephanie Snee, art teacher who hosted at Artist Republic.

“Offers have been made for over $700,000 for this one

piece,” Snee said.

This marks the first time one of Banksy pieces has been viewed in Orange County.

To this day, Banksy is still an anonymous artist who has received fame and appreciation for his satirical street art and graffiti, Snee said.

Banksy is a political activist, filmmaker and graffiti artist from England. His works consist of political and social commentary along with dark, humorous stenciled-paintings.

He was inspired in the ‘90s by a 3D graffiti artist from an English music group. Banksy is best known for marking on cities from Paris to San Francisco.

“Seeing Banksy’s piece in person was like seeing a piece of the past,” said Mallory McCarthy, 22, San Juan Capistrano. “Being able to experience something that influenced so many with politics and culture was very moving. I felt lucky to be able to experience politically charged artwork in the flesh.”

Paying to get through life is a common struggle among most students at Saddleback College.

Students have to pay for classes, books, gas and housing, leaving most students with just little amount of money for basic needs like groceries.

The campus holds a community food bank the first and third

Wednesday of every month from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., giving students free groceries. Students meet at Parking Lot 1 near Culinary Arts Building 3 where the bank offers a range of food items from fruits, vegetables, deli-style cheese, pre-packaged flip-top meals, peanut butter, canned tuna and chicken, eggs and bread.

Students must sign in once they arrive at the food bank, which does not require any in-

come verification. Students simply bring their own grocery bags and receive food items.

In 2013, Saddleback partnered with Helping Hand Worldwide. Jeanne Harris-Caldwell, director of Health Services, arranges for the Mobile Food Pantry to come to campus.

Helping Hand Worldwide, located Laguna Beach, is a non-profit corporation that provides a variety of healthy, wholesome foods for free. Sita Helms, founder and executive director of Helping Hand Worldwide, first started this organization when she noticed her neighbor needed medical attention including suffering from hunger.

This was the start to a growing organization where much of the donations received come from local groceries stores and local retailers. After many years of developing, Helping Hand Worldwide now has three refrigerated food trucks that provide for communities in 13 different locations in Orange County and two in Camp Pendleton.

On the morning the food bank is held, the mobile food trucks stop by partnered grocery stores to pick up fresh, nutritional food. Volunteers arrange all items for students to pick up.

According to Helping Hand, Saddleback College provided food for 2,632 students in 2015.

The Saddleback College Women’s volleyball team has three standout freshmen this season.

Mandy Sides, a 5-foot-10inch outside hitter from Whittier Christian High School, leads the team with 132 kills. Nicolette Spriggs, also an outside hitter, is a Jserra High School alumna with 0.750 kills per set. Mariah Torres, a 5-foot-4-inch setter from Vista Murrieta High School, leads the team with 250 aces.

The team has placed seventh in the Orange Empire Conference since 2006, however the ladies are already showing im-

provement early in the season with the team’s present record of 4-6 compared to last year’s record of 5-17.

What makes this season different may be the fact that the team is made up of a large majority of freshmen players.

“Because we have a whole new team we are working completely fresh,” Torres said.

From what the team has proven, it is a great possibility that they will surpass seventh place in the Orange Empire Conference for the first time in six years.

For Sides, Spriggs, and Torres choosing Saddleback had two main factors: education and volleyball, stating Saddleback had more appeal than other schools.

“Saddleback felt like a good fit for me when I felt a good connection with the girls on the team,” Sides said.

“I chose Saddleback because it is well known and has a great transfer rate,” .

As of now, none of the ladies have plans to pursue volleyball competitively at a four-year university.

Sides, Spriggs, and Torres are enjoying their time at Saddleback College as part of the Gaucho Athletic Program.

“We work hard at practice and keep it fast paced, but also have fun,” said Sides.

Saddleback College’s women’s soccer team gained yet another win of 2-1 against Golden West College Tuesday, Sept. 27. The girls are officially still unbeaten going into their eighth game of this season.

During the first half, the girls were faced with a strong defensive line up and a tough goalie, coming out and blocking many attempted shots by the Gauchos. Though that did not stop them from coming out on top.

With only 20 minutes left of the first half the score was still left at 0-0 with much efforts of the girls pushing to strive for a goal. At 14 minutes and 8 seconds left of the first half the Trailblazers came out lucky with a head shot by Angelica Tatum slipping past our goalie straight into the back of the net.

Gaucho ladies communicated loudly with each other preparing themselves for a stronger defense, and a stronger attacking offense. The goal was exactly what set the Gaucho spark for the girls to play harder, and tougher.

Going into second half with a score of 0-1 Gauchos were ready to turn this game around and to come out on top. Coaches from the sidelines chanted at the girls to win the ball, and to gain possession. Which is exactly

what they did. With multiple attempt shots by the girls, they were coming in hard and motivated to stay unbeatable.

Finally with about thirty minutes left of the first half, No. 5 Amber Martin received a pass from #10 Emily Monig directly shooting the ball right past the goalies legs bringing the game to a tie of 1-1 ending the first half.

Starting second half the girls came with strong pressure and proceeded to be in control of the ball. Coming into contact with the ball came No. 28 Rachel Edelstein striking the ball into the upper right corner of the net slipping right past the tips of the goalie. Gauchos were in the lead.

Coach Bj McNicol was happy with the results of the game and the efforts of both teams.

“Full credit to Golden West, they came into a fun environment and they tried to make a really tough game, in which they did” McNicol said. “Their keeper made some amazing saves, I thought they battled all the way to the end. Full credit to them and our girls from coming from a goal down to come back and make sure we got the win.”

“I think overall our attacking consumed them, we wanted it, we came out there, played hard and we got what we deserved.” Edelstein said.

The Gauchos competed at the Golden West Invitational in Central Park, Huntington Beach on Sept. 23.

The women placed fifth out of 17 led by their top runners from last year, sophomores Angel Vallier, Caroline Dagarin and Rachel Oberschelp.

Meanwhile, the men’s team took a bit of a hit for this season losing their top two runners, Ulysses Orozco and Miles Brubacher, to four year colleges.

The beginning of the season proved rocky for the men, losing to Hartnell at Santa Ynez on Aug. 27, whereas the women proved their dominance and won.

It was a record breaking day for the Lady Gauchos at the Palomar Invitational in Oceanside on Sept. 9.

Their top three runners, Vallier, Dagarin and Oberschelp all broke the previous program record for the course. The previous record was set in 2012 at 20:14.

Vallier, Dagarin and Oberschelp placed in the top ten and six of the seven runners placed in the top 20, securing the win.

The men, however, fell in placement compared to their results from last year. From second to fifth, led by freshmen Nicholas O’Briensky and Jacob King.

On Sept. 16, the men and women competed at the Southern California Preview in Irvine.

The women competed without one of their top runners, Oberschelp, who fell to injury, but still managed a strong race with leaders Vallier and Dagarin. The women placed fourth out of 31, not having placed at all last year. The men, led by Skartsen, placed tenth, placing better than last year.

The Gauchos are halfway through their season and show lots of promise with the women starting off strong and maintaining that momentum while the men have been steadily increasing their results.

With only have two races left until the Orange Empire Conference Championships, the next race is not until Oct. 7, where they will compete at Cuesta College.
