Melanie Boettcher’s skills expand outreach of Guild's goals

By Jane Gilman Witchita, Kansas may not be a small town, but it seemed like it to Melanie Boettcher.

And she has brought that small-town Midwestern ambiance to her life in Los Angeles.

“I love neighborhoods where people know each other,” she told us in the living room of her Windsor Square home.

Currently, she is a volunteer at her daughter Lavinia’s school, a role she has played while each of her four children were enrolled in their schools.

It was when the Boettch-

ers enrolled their son Max at St. James pre-school that they discovered the neighborhood they would eventually move to.

“That’s when I was invited to join NGA,” she recalled.

And she has been an active member ever since.

Formerly called Needlework Guild of America, NGA provides clothing for children in need. Melanie has chaired fundraisers, served as president and has shopped for clothing for the boys and girls in the different agencies NGA supports.

“We used to hold fundraisers in members’ backyards and raise about $3,000 or $4,000.”

In the past few years, Melanie has moved the benefit party to her husband Paul’s nightclub, Busby’s in Miracle Mile.

The party brought in a record $30,000 this year, enabling the club to serve an even greater population.

Operation School Bell has been a major recipient of NGA’s funds. OSB provides full wardrobes for children in lower income neighborhoods.

It also sponsors an annual prom dress event, supplying

high school girls with gowns, shoes and handbags.

Melanie also helps with the project at Aviva, a school and home for girls referred by the police department. NGA gives each newcomer robes and toiletries.

Alexandria House also gains from the NGA treasury. “We donate on an as-needed basis.

Recently, we provided school uniforms for some of the children.” Bedding is also given to the women who are moving out of the transitional housing Alexandria House provides. She remembers one shopping trip at Target when she and her daughter tried to stuff some bedding into the back of her sports car, “On that excursion, we had to make two trips.”

“Melanie devotes so much of her time and energy to NGA and Operation School Bell,” said her friend Susan Kneafsey.

“She was instrumental in revolutionizing our NGA benefit by creating the annual ‘party of the year’ at Busby’s. Through her vision over the last decade, we have successfully raised more money for NGA than we could have ever imagined. Her mantra is ‘give locally’ and she does from the heart through her leadership at NGA and her volunteer work with the children at Operation School Bell. She sets a great example for all of us!”

major. But she went into the art world instead, and gained a job with Illusion Arts, a visual effects firm.

Then she switched to another “job,” raising Max, Tessa, Adaline and Lavinia.

Her home is filled with antiques, a piano from her family home in Kansas, some of Paul’s paintings, her collection of sea stones and other beach mementoes.

Melanie uses her artistic talents as an interior designer, recently for family. “Lately, I’ve done by son’s place and now his friend wants the same treatment.”

A member of the Hancock Park Garden Club, she is avid about sustainability. “We have buckets in our showers, and it provides enough water for my roses and the backyard.” She is also letting the front lawn go brown.

This woman of Larchmont maintains a busy calendar, yet she schedules volunteer time to meets the needs of the less fortunate.

Food Bank’s efficiency earns award from rating service The Los Angeles Regional Food Bank has been awarded Charity Navigator’s four-star rating for the fifth consecutive year.

Charity Navigator rates charities for efficiency and ethical operations, evaluating each non-profit for “sound fiscal management and commitment to accountability and transparency.”

The Food Bank was also recognized by the L.A. Business Journal in 2013 as Organization of the Year among nonprofit organizations with an annual budget exceeding $10 million.

For 42 years, the Food Bank has worked to mobilize resources in the community to alleviate hunger and has distributed one billion pounds of food since its inception. It provides food to 280,500 clients monthly and in 2014 distributed 59 million pounds.

The Food Bank collects food from hundreds of resources which it distributes through

690 partner agencies throughout L.A. County. With the help of 27,000 volunteers annually, 97 percent of funds raised and in-kind donations go directly to programs.

Target program aids schools The retail giant invites people to visit its Facebook page to vote for a school of their choice. For every 25 votes a school receives through the firm’s Facebook.com/Target, the company will donate a $25 Target GiftCard, with a maximum donation of $10,000 per school.

“Give With Target allows us to work with our guests to get excited about supporting teachers and students and set them up for a successful school year,” said Laysha Ward, president of community relations, Target. The company expects to give $1 billion for education in 2015.

Patti Carroll's passion is for art, local preservation and Paris

By Suzan Filipek Patti Carroll’s passion for preservation was ignited several years ago when a developer sought to tear down two Craftsmen homes in St. Andrews Square to build 40 condos.

She rallied with neighbors to save the 1920s houses on S. Manhattan Place, and, to her surprise, they won.

“We actually found we were able to save houses from demolition,” said a jubiliant Carroll last month in her real estate office at 584 N. Larchmont Blvd.

A board member of the St. Andrews Square Neighborhood Association, she represents the area on the Greater Wilshire Neighborhood Council, where she is also treasurer and serves on the land use and outreach committees.

“We’ve managed to block different projects here and there; we’re the eastern border of the GWNC. We act as a buffer zone for anything coming west.”

Historic-Cultural Monuments Today the Manhattan Place homes are Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monuments.

“We thought we’d died and gone to heaven… Instead of 40 condos, we got these incredible neighbors Rory and David. They show films in their backyard.”

They also have large parties, about 50 people were invited one weekend last month.

“We like to party,” says Rory Cunningham, who with his husband David Pacheco, bought one of the historic homes.

They had been looking for a historic home for three years, when their realtor was at an open house and Patti asked him, “Do you know anyone who wants to save a great big, old house?”

It was already in escrow, but after the historic designation, the developer put it back on the market, and “we were able to jump in and purchase it,” says Rory.

Craftsman details beautify the inside, while its Mediterranean revival exterior needs some TLC. “We’re still working on it,” he says.

She works out of a two-story building her father bought in the 1950s as a second wing for his Hollywoodland Realty Co. in Beachwood Canyon.

Patti brings out a book with a photograph of Hollywoodland Realty in the 1920s. The first building built in the hills, it is surrounded by brush and chaparral. The Hollywood sign was erected later as an advertisement for the subdivision.

Local real estate and history have been central to Carroll’s life, as has art, and, then, of course, there’s Paris.

Back in the 70s, as an art history student at San Francisco State, she and then-boyfriend Mark Van Amringe traveled to Paris as part of a class in New Wave cinema.

Filmmaking in France proved to be a tangle of red tape, so Mark, who was also a photographer, was asked by a publication he sometimes worked for to try sales. The young couple figured why not, and their publication empire was born.

They sold high-end magazines as well as advertising for the inside pages, and they wrote a gossip column for one of their magazines, “Interview.”

Patti became director of advertising for Condé Nast France, which numbered “French Vogue” among its illustrious covers and, she and her now-husband Mark, lived in Paris 30 years.

After Patti’s father, Edward Carroll, died in 2003, she moved back to run the business.

Historic photos and modern art work of the Hollywood sign hang in her office, along with pictures and memorabilia of her parents.

Art has been a refuge from the business. She had exhibits at a gallery at her Beachwood office and a salon on Larchmont she shared with designer Marcie Bronkar.

“I like being at the start of something, and I like seeing talent emerge,” says Patti.

She “thinks outside the box,” she says, because of a four-year stint in her childhood in Desert Hot Springs— a place not unlike the Wild West.

Her mom, a single woman at the time, built houses in an era when many women didn’t

work, certainly not as contractors. She did remarry, and in keeping with the family tradition of a long line of Realtors, Patti’s stepfather was president of the board of Realtors in the desert town.

Her step mom, Gloria Carroll, a past Ebell president and Chronicle Woman of Larchmont, is among the many influential woman in her life.

“What’s so amazing about Larchmont and how great the community is, is there’s so many great women in this community. I love being a part of it.”

Dr. Gordon’s clinics fill need for cancer screening In just three short years, Dr. Patricia Gordon has opened 37 clinics worldwide and trained healthcare professionals to screen and treat women for pre-cervical cancer.

The Hancock Park resident founded Cure Cervical Cancer (CCC) to help women fight the disease using low-tech solutions in new “See and Treat� clinics around the world.

In June, Patricia returned to Kenya with colleague Caitlin Cawley to visit seven of the organization’s “See and Treat� clinics, including a new mobile clinic. The mobile clinics are able to reach rural communities where patients are unable to travel for treatment.

By Billy Taylor Although the newest president of Wilshire Rotary Club was born in Astoria, NY, Pearl Rizzo has been a California girl since her family relocated to Santa Monica in 1960.

She attended Madison Elementary, Lincoln Jr. High and graduated from Santa Monica High School.

Working at the mortgage giant Fannie Mae, she met her future husband, Marc Leeka.

They married in March 1991.

Shortly after, Pearl enrolled in Occidental College and earned a bachelor of arts degree in American Studies.

Now Pearl and her husband live in Los Feliz, in a house with views of the Griffith Observatory. “There is so much wildlife,� she says with excitement when asked about living in the area. “Just last week a bobcat was sleeping in our yard. Later, I saw a baby raccoon sleeping in our oak tree.�

Susan Grossman, veteran activist for Hancock Park

By Georgia Dolenz Contributing writer Originally from San Luis Obispo, Susan Grossman moved to Los Angeles in 1954 with her father, an aerospace engineer. She recalls her early encounters with Hancock Park: “I used to go out of my way to drive down these streets, because it was just such a pleasure to see the trees and the big houses.”

Susan and her husband, Kim Grossman, moved to Hancock Park in 1984, but were faced with a very different neighbor-

hood.

“This whole area, in the ‘70s and ‘80s, had suffered from people moving to the suburbs, abandoning the inner city. We had a lot of crime and there were break-ins.” Eager to make a difference, Susan quickly joined the Hancock Park Home Owners Association (HPHOA).

“We got involved to try and make the area safer and better to live in.”

Susan is vice president of the HPHOA and chairs the traffic safety, land use and parkway tree canopy commit-

tees. “Susan is a true neighborhood activist, who works tirelessly on behalf of the Hancock Park neighborhood and its residents,” says Cindy Chvatal, president of the HPHOA. The association has a total of 1,200 homes, 18 board members and was founded in 1948.

She is also the secretary on the Historic Preservation Overlay Zone board (HPOZ), which ensures properties adhere to the neighborhood’s Preservation Plan. “We have an architect who sits on the board, and we really try to help people come up with a design

that works for what they want, and also works for the neighbors, the community and the future.”

Susan volunteers 40 hours per month for the Association and enjoys the challenge. “It’s part of living in a big city,” explains Susan. “We try to balance protecting the community, the quality of life, and balance that with the requirements of a vital growing city.”

Preserving the local trees is something that Susan feels particularly passionate about.

She is working with arborist Sabine Hoppner to help protect local trees from the drought and plant new ones throughout the neighborhood.

A history major at UCLA, the university is where she met her husband. After college, she worked in computer programming and infrastructure management at the UCLA Medical Center. “It was 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It was very intense,” laughs Susan. Her husband also worked in software development, and traveled the world for work.

They now travel for music.

“We go to a lot of concerts.

We’re going to Leeds (England) for a piano competition in August.” When asked what aspect of her work she finds most rewarding, she simply answers: “The people. They’re terrific, hard working, civic minded.” The same can be said about Susan; “She is a pleasure to work with and we are so fortunate to have her on our board,” says Chvatal.

“People really work hard, try to do the best thing and try to be fair. It’s imperfect, but we keep plugging away,” smiles Susan. It’s this sentiment that drives her to volunteer, protect, and develop the neighborhood she loves. “It’s good to be part of this community,” adds Susan, “and I’m grateful for the opportunities it’s given me.”

Moser named to Windsor Square HPOZ board Caroline Labiner Moser has been named to the Windsor Square Historic Preservation Overlay Zone Board.

Moser, a resident in the area for the past 23 years, is an architect. She replaces another architect, Mary Pickhardt.

The board reviews architectural plans submitted by property owners in the 1,100home community.

Previously, she was a member of the Harvard Heights HPOZ board. Moser has been a volunteer with the city planning department’s Office of Historic Resources, and has been a consultant on the restoration of The Ebell of Los Angeles.

Julie Stromberg shines a light in Windsor Village and beyond

By Suzan Filipek New mom Julie Stromberg was concerned about renovation plans for Harold Henry Park.

“The initial plan had no sand and swings. It wasn’t very functional,” said Stromberg, whose early involvement led to chairing the Friends of the Park the past two years.

Playing in sand is good for childhood development and promotes imagination. “I didn’t want them to take that away, and kids love swings.”

Known as “space hogs” in city lingo, swings are not easy to fit under ADA compliance, which was the impetus behind the renovation in the first place.

A park for everyone Cheerily, she adds, “we were able to work with [the city], so we could have some swings, and activities for all ages. We wanted something for everybody to enjoy.”

Going forward, she is working on establishing a partnership with the Dept. of Recreation and Parks to make Harold A. Henry Park “Friends” official.

"She just blows my mind.

She's so industrious," said Diane Dicksteen, president of the Windsor Village Association. "She is on top of everything, and a delight to work for. Someone says they want something done, and it's finished. I think she's headed for great things."

Stromberg seems to positively affect everything in her path, from her gaggle of rescue Bijan mixes she walks to the newly renovated treeshaded, ADA compliant park to residents of the Downtown Women’s Center.

When pregnant with her now-three-year-old son, she offered legal aid, sometimes

cooked and mostly listened to its homeless residents.

She volunteers for Harriet Buhai Center for Family Law, a non-profit for domestic violence issues. “A lot of the women are abused and really need some help. It’s one way to help them,” she said last month in her S. Lucerne home.

She mostly handles commercial cases—elder abuse and family law—as an attorney with Obagi Law Group in Beverly Hills.

Her background, however, in environmental litigation includes work on the seventh and eighth generation of the Hinkley, CA chromium-6 exposure cases made famous by the Erin Brockovich movie.

Neighborhood issues came on her radar when she moved to Windsor Village.

Windsor Village She discovered the area on her way to hear Gloria Steinem speak at the Ebell of Los Angeles.

“What is this magical place?” she thought, not knowing within a few years she would be on the board of the historic women’s club.

She and her husband bought their 1920s Spanish casita in 2011, reviving the original décor and adding matching Ver-

Her motion to start a sustainable committee was approved last month by the Greater Wilshire Neighborhood Council, where she is area representative and serves on the land use and transportation committees.

“There’s definitely a huge interest in sustainability and moving towards a more sustainable lifestyle… and we want to provide a resource to do that.”

She aims to team with local groups such as the Hancock Park Garden Club and Hollywood Beautification and get the word out on free city services, including rain barrels and compost bins.

She recently completed Emerge, an intensive political leadership program, and is a volunteer with Mayor Garcetti’s office as an Appeals Board

member for the Gang Reduction and Youth Development procurement program.

She chaired UC Berkeley Alumni Association Leadership Scholarship awards for a Southern California chapter, GWNC’s Neighborhood Purposes Grant awards for 2015, and is on The Ebell’s Scholarship Committee.

So, it was only natural that she would be in the process of creating a scholarship program for women who are the first in their family to go to college—like her.

Growing up in Montreal, by 12 she knew she wanted to be an attorney. The family moved to Orange County when she was a teen and spoke better French than English.

She excelled on a model United Nations-type debate team in high school and moot trials in college.

Mother's influence Her mother served as a role model. She was active in the community, passing after a long battle with breast cancer.

“I think my mother’s example and losing her to cancer compelled me to find ways to support and help other women. In time, I expanded my efforts to helping animals and my community.

“Now I am working toward establishing a scholarship because I think our children need all the support they can get now that education has become so incredibly expensive.

The last thing that we want is for education to be unattainable or a privilege and not a right.”

Hollygrove's focus reaches families

By Monica Corcoran Harel It starts with making a splash. At noon, on a recent Friday in July, the kids at Camp Hollygrove are showing off their cannonballs in a contest judged by local volunteers.

One fearless six-year-old flings herself into the pool. Moments later, a teenager tentatively taps at the surface. This is scary for him. Until a week ago, he had never been in a pool. As the kids chant encouragement— “You can do it!”—he breathes deeply, squeezes his eyes shut and…splash!

Sound familiar?

Hollygrove? It may sound familiar for a few reasons.

Founded originally in 1880 as an orphanage, this agency—as part of EMQ FamiliesFirst since 2006—has cared for more than 20,000 children in California (Marilyn Monroe lived here as a kid in 1935). The annual fundraiser, a must-attend event for many in Hancock Park, is called the Norma Jean Gala.

No longer a residential facility, Hollygrove is now devoted to the well being of at-risk children in our neighborhood.

They offer services on campus like Camp Hollygrove, the Endless Summer afterschool program and family counseling sessions like Parent Institute. But what first surprises most local volunteers is how close Hollygrove is to Larchmont Village—just a half-mile away, tucked behind high hedges on El Centro Ave.

“As a mom, the focus on small children has always drawn me in,” says Hancock Park resident and Realtor Lisa Hutchins, who is on the board of governors and has supported Hollygrove since her teen years at Marlborough School. “You can get involved by doing art with the children or reading to them.”

Phalanx of supporters Last January, Larchmont denizen Julia Connolly joined Hollygrove as director of fund development, and she’s already recruited a phalanx of fiercely devoted local female supporters and fellow Wagon Wheel moms Sarah McTeigue, Sheri Weller, Amy Savagian, Jeet Andersen, Sam Hanks and myself. Word has spread and local notables like actors Colin Hanks and Ian Ziering, “Mad Men” costume designer Janie Bryant and actress Becki Newton have joined actress

Ezhari appointed senior deputy for Larchmont area Nikki Ezhari was appointed senior deputy for Fourth District City Councilman David Ryu, representing the Larchmont, Hancock Park and Miracle Mile.

“She’s coming back to the community after being in Council District Two. We’re extremely excited to have her back,” said Sarah Dusseault, Ryu’s chief of staff.

Ezhari will begin her new post Tues., Aug. 4.

Ezhari was a field deputy for City Councilmember Paul Krekorian the past four years.

Prior to working for Krekorian, she worked for Councilmember Tom LaBonge.

Nikki said she “strives to be instrumental in bringing city services to the community and wants the community to feel that their local government works for them.” She has a bachelor of science in paralegal studies and received her juris doctor degree in 1999.

In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her two sons.

She also keeps in contact with area police. “They call me when they need to get the word out.” And neighbors call her when they need to call the police.

“I love being able to help people… and animals and the environment,” she adds.

“Many of those trips were for wheelchair distribution,” she says.

“My husband started an initiative, and raised some 1.2 million dollars. Rotary clubs in the area sponsored the chairs, and we travelled around to distribute them.”

Goals as president Rotary clubs in North America are challenged by a lack of membership, says Pearl.

“We’re just not attracting enough young people.”

Pearl says part of the problem with recruiting civicminded residents in this city is competition from other service organizations: “LA is such a big city that people have many options to volunteer.”

But she has a plan.

“I think good speakers and a well-run meeting attracts people,” says Pearl, who has recently started a dynamic speaker series. It’s important to find A-list speakers, she says, who will attract new audiences.

“Rotary has the image of an old guys network, but we’re trying to change that.”

“There is nothing so rewarding than seeing boys and girls fill in the story in a textlessillustrated book,” says Lyn, who is headquartered at 554 N. Larchmont Blvd.

“Our kids’ brains are being forced to develop fast-processing skills at the expense of vitally important slow processing skills,” Lyn explained.

In the past year, she and her staff have visited educator conferences in 23 states to interest teachers to place the program in their curriculum.

Write Brain offers educators complete lesson plans, graphics, worksheets and resources to help them increase a student’s critical thinking capacities while igniting their creativity through story-telling, Lyn said.

Monica Rosenthal is one of the many people who signed on early to help Lyn launch the endeavor. The program coincides with the Fremont Place resident’s interest in finding solutions to literacy development. “This truly solves a problem,” she said.

Another of the program’s admirers is Jeff Kinney, author of “Diary of a Wimpy Kid.” He joins the people concerned about children’s lack of abil-

Humble origins grow to generous funds

The ladies of The Ebell had $100 in 1919 to start a scholarship fund. Education was core to the founders’ mission and matching fund drives inspired members to reach deep into their pockets.

Today the Ebell scholarship committee has grown to a multimillion-dollar fund.

This year’s scholarship recipients include a former U.S. Marine platoon sergeant studying computer engineering at Cal Poly. Another is a woman in her 60s returning to school after raising her children as a single mom to study geriatric social work at Loyola Marymount University.

In all, 65 college students will receive a total of more than $300,000 this year.

Meeting the applicants and hearing their compelling stories, “that’s the best part,” says Donna Russell, scholarship chair.

Besides being in college, applicants must have a 3.25 grade point average or higher, perform community service and need financial assistance.

Scholarship awards night is Sept. 10 at the Ebell Theater.

Rest Cottage The Ebell’s other philanthrophy, Rest Cottage Association dates back to 1918, when an actual “rest cottage” provided women’s club members a place to convalesce for short periods. A member gave the Ebell the cottage at W. 95th St. A few years later, a larger property was acquired at 135 N. Park View St. A building by architect Julia Morgan—who designed San Simeon—was constructed on the site in 1924.

Proceeds from the property sales were wisely deposited in a trust and have since multiplied into the millions, the interest helping in countless ways.

The committee’s criteria in choosing the beneficiaries comes from the Club’s mission: “Do they serve the needs of women and children locally as much as possible,” said Patty Lombard, chair of Rest Cottage Association.

Beneficiaries of the Rest Cottage fund include St. Anne’s for at-risk women, mothers and children, the Midnight Mission and Good Shepherd Center.

“We have some really interesting organizations,” said Lombard.

Among them is “Get on the Bus,” which arranges for children to visit their incarcerated moms on Mother’s Day. A volunteer chaperones if the child needs to be bused several hours to say Folsom prison, explained Lombard.

Another group is “Write Girl” which pairs mentors with young girls to journal or write as therapy.

“The Ebell is really open to finding new groups and being receptive to different types of organizations,” said Lombard.

“The Ebell According to Mrs. Rathman,” Oct. 26, is an illustrated, dramatized program, drawn from the entertaining writings of a former Ebell member (who joined in 1925) and wrote a definitive history of the Ebell’s formative years, from 1894 through 1950.

I have worked with Doug Ratliff, owner of Supreme Roofing on Gower, since 2004 and we are still enjoying working together. I have developed a new respect and admiration for roofers! While at Supreme Roofing, I implemented a new Safety, Injury and Illness program with a 100% success rate.

MAURA DALY Park La Brea Director of Leasing and Marketing Maura Daly has been in the property management industry since graduating from St. Mary’s College in Moraga, CA. During her career, she has taken time off to travel extensively and live in Scotland and other European countries.

After returning from Europe, she supervised a portfolio of 21 properties for a private developer in Northern California. She moved to Southern California to work for the Sares-Regis Group in Irvine as a property manager specializing in new construction. NANCI LEONARD Core College Counseling Since she was five-years-old, Nanci Leonard has begun school every September! For 40 years, she taught English (at all levels, specializing in writing) at four public high schools where she was also the College Counselor. For eight years, she volunteered as an evaluator for UCLA Freshmen Applications.

Once again I find myself grateful to the Larchmont Chronicle for their annual Women of Larchmont issue. Without this yearly pause, I honestly don’t know when I’d stop and take stock of the past year.

And as usual it’s been a gratifying whirlwind! I’ve continued to train other physicians, attend and speak at national and international meetings, and contribute to professional publications.

What stands out for me this year is the privilege of once again being selected to offer an option that few other offices will have. In order to provide our patients with the very best care, we combine our expertise and dedication with cutting edge technology. Our upcoming addition, a new injectable to address double chins, will be available in only four offices in Los Angeles in the next few months.

I’ve accepted the invitation to co-chair a course offered by the American Society of Dermatologic Surgeons on “Advanced Use of Fillers and Neuromodulaters” in New York City in early October. Being recognized by this esteemed organization to instruct other doctors is a honor. Contributing to professional publications remains important to me and I coedited a textbook and a special journal supplement on the topic of neuromodulaters and fillers.

We are delighted to have expanded our exceptional staff with the addition of Dr. Helen Fincher. She and her family have moved from the Westside to Hancock Park where she joins us part-time, as well as her husband’s dermatologic practice in Beverly Hills.

Capri Wiggins Maddox pilgrim school Busy Attorney and Parent Volunteer The saying that “when you need something done, give it to a busy woman” couldn’t be more true than when applied to Larchmont mom Capri Maddox, proud Pilgrim parent of Casey. Capri serves as Special Assistant City Attorney and Senior Advisor to the Los Angeles City Attorney on civil and criminal matters. She is the City Attorney’s Executive Liaison for Public Works, Business Improvement District and Neighborhood Council issues, and conducts final hiring interviews for criminal branch attorneys among myriad other responsibilities. She sits on the Boards of Cal State LA and Pepperdine University and will join the Board of Southern California Public Radio in the fall of 2015. In spite of her busy schedule, Capri (along with husband Kerman) is always on board for Pilgrim events and is always among the first to volunteer wherever she is needed with a big smile and boundless energy. SChuur Acting head of School Echo horizon School Martha Schuur, a longtime resident of Hancock Park, has been leading Echo Horizon School in Culver City since her appointment as Head of School in the fall of 2013. “Children are transformed at Echo Horizon,” says Martha, with its focus on the elementary-age child.

Inspired by Google’s “20% Time, Martha recently introduced “i2 time” which ensures children have dedicated weekly time for exploration and discovery by following their passions and interests. AllegrA Yust Woods Pilgrim school Pilgrim Mom with Many Hats It takes a special kind of woman to juggle as many things as gracefully and successfully as Allegra does.

She has lived in the neighborhood since birth, and is a publisher and editor by trade. Allegra maintains an annual publication and has produced a number of books, including the monograph on the work of late artist and visionary Leonard Knight, whose painted mountain near the Salton Sea is a desert landmark. She works alongside her husband, Douglas Woods, as an agent editor for Rizzoli International Publications, helping to produce the major architectural surveys, Classic Homes of Los Angeles and The California Casa. Allegra also manages her family’s properties, a portfolio of noteworthy period residential apartment buildings. Allegra and Doug’s children, Lauren and Christopher (Larchmont Chronicle school columnist), have attended Pilgrim School since they were toddlers, and Allegra has devoted much time and energy toward helping the school with its fundraising, including co-hosting, with her parents, Larry and Clara Yust, the annual Afternoon in the Garden, which has raised substantial funds that benefit the STEM program, the scholarship fund, and the Field of Dreams.
