WELCOMING ADDRESS Welcome to UNSW!! First and foremost, congratulations on making it so far along your academic journey, and landing a spot in the No.1 Civil & Environmental Engineering School in Australia!! CEVSOC welcomes you with open arms to venture through the most gruelling and amazing experiences during your degree.

We are CEVSOC’s Learning & Development Team, here to guide you to academic success, develop your technical skills, and overall elevate your learning experience here at UNSW.

What We Do The main goal of our team is to support the Civil & Environmental Engineering community here at UNSW in achieving your academic, development and personal goals during your time with us. Whether it is aimed at self improvement or learning something new, we are here to help through running events, creating resources, and overall providing an enjoyable experience for you to grow in.

Throughout each step of your academic journey, we will be there to assist you along the way. With Course Workshops for 1st years, Industrial Training Night for 2nd and 3rd years, and Thesis & Discipline Electives Night for final year students, we hope you feel supported throughout your studies, improving your overall uni experience. Not to mention, our technical and self development events will help develop some essential technical skills such as AutoCAD, and also focus on uplifting your personal wellness during your studies. We are always willing to hear your feedback for uni courses (through Food for Thought), for any of our events, or just in a casual conversation, so feel free to reach out to us and share what’s important to you!

Consolidated based on the questions we personally asked ourselves and feedback we gathered on what others wished they knew when entering uni, this guide aims to help you set foot on your academic journey with confidence! PROGRAM INFORMATION

DEGREE PROGRESSION Progression Plans provide students with an example of how they should structure their degree.

This helps ensure that students are able to finish their degree within the allocated time frame and avoid delays.

To find your relevant progression plan, please visit Enrolment Sequencing and enter the degree code applicable to you. Note that this sequence is a suggestion, hence you do not need to follow if it does not suit you.

Additionally, later on in your degree, you may want to perform an official progression check if you have made significant changes to your plan.

This can be done through submitting the forms found at Program Progression Check.

SEQUENCING OF ELECTIVES Level 1 Prescribed Electives All Civil Engineering Students must complete 12 Units of Credit (UoC) of Level 1 Prescribed Electives, which is equivalent to two first year electives.

These courses are not prerequisites to any core engineering courses (for Civil Engineering), so they can be completed at any time or in any sequence.

Students are recommended to take one Level 1 Elective in Term 2 and one in Term 3. This recommendation varies for those studying a Civil Engineering double degree.

The recommended first-year electives are: MATS1101 (Introduction to Materials for Engineering Applications) A very useful course for understanding important material properties, stress and strain which is relevant to future core civil courses, such as ENGG2400.

Could be a bit challenging for students who have not done Chemistry or Engineering Studies in high school, however still manageable overall.

ENGG1400 (Engineering Infrastructure Systems) A system optimisation and network modelling course. Recommended if you are generally interested in transport systems.

A relatively easy and doable course which explores concepts which are usually not explored in other courses, however applicable to a wide range of real life situations.

GMAT1110 (Surveying and Geospatial Engineering).

This is the recommended elective for Surveying students, intended to replace ENGG1400.

Delves into determining relative positioning of features above, on and below Earth’s surface.

Involves outdoor practical exercises to familiarise students with using electronic surveying equipment.

Of course, you can enrol in whatever first year electives are available! Read up on each elective and speak to older students about their choices to see what interests you - don’t be discouraged to digress from the recommended electives!

Discipline Electives In the final year(s) of your Civil Engineering degree, all students must complete at least 6 UoC of Discipline Electives. Students are recommended to pick discipline electives directed towards your specialisation.

Generally, straight Civil Engineering students need to take a total of 5 discipline electives: 3 for the Civil Engineering specialisation stream component of your degree (part of the main 168 UOC); and 2 additional discipline electives for the Engineering (Honours) degree component (an extra 12 UOC to meet the UoC required for completion) If you study a double degree or decide to take a practice elective or Higher Honours Thesis, the number of discipline electives will vary. Contact the Nucleus Hub for further details.

Note: If you’re planning to take Honours Research Thesis, CVEN4701 is a prerequisite.

Practice Electives Practice electives is also another option to satisfy the program requirements instead of taking Discipline Electives. If students are to take Practice Electives, they must take 6 UoC of the Engineering Vertically Integrated Project (ENGG2600, ENGG3600, ENGG4600) which runs across 3 terms, each contributing towards 2 UoC each. More details on the Practice Electives can be found in the Civil Engineering Handbook.

Vertically Integrated Projects are one of four main pillars that forms the framework of the ChallENG Program. The ChallENG Program aims to connect UNSW engineering students, academics and industry to real-world, project based learning initiatives. Students are exposed to a multidisciplinary learning approach that emphasises development of technical and design skills, and expands their professional expertise. STREAM SPECIFIC COURSES Some core civil engineering subjects are taught by both the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering and School of Mechanical Engineering.

These subjects are Engineering Mechanics (ENGG1300) and Fluid Mechanics (ENGG2500).

The two schools teach these subjects during different terms in the yearly academic calendar. Although the subjects are taught similarly in principle, it is recommended that Civil Engineering students enrol in the stream offered by the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering to ensure relevance to your degree. However, Civil Engineering students may want to enrol in the Mechanical streams if they wish to sequence their progression differently.

ENGG1300 (Engineering Mechanics) Builds foundation of using rigid body mechanics to analyse static and dynamic systems/structures.

Taught by the Civil School in Term 2 Taught by the Mechanical School in Term 3 ENGG2500 (Fluid Mechanics) Builds foundation of analysing the behaviour and properties of water (primarily), and its effects, within systems.

WEIGHTED AVERAGE MARK Weighted Average Mark (WAM) is the record of your performance in the courses you’ve undertaken which are shown on your transcript.

M = mark received in a course U = units of credit for a course ∑ = the sum of

On one’s transcript (updated termly), there will be a record of your individual raw marks for each course along with a grading (FL, PS, CR, DN, HD).

Additionally, there is a record of each term WAM, which indicates your cumulative performance for each particular term, and your nominal/overall WAM, being a record of your performance throughout your entire degree program.

Grade-only results not included in calculating WAM can be found here.

Note: If you are approved for transfer of credit for course(s) completed at UNSW in a different program, then the marks you achieved for those specific course(s) will be included in the calculation of your WAM for your new Program (2016 onwards).

Honours WAM Honours/faculty WAM will be more relevant in the later years of your degree and is calculated differently to your overall WAM. As all students studying civil engineering (single or dual) are enrolled in an honours program, this WAM is used to determine your award class at the end of the degree. It uses the following formula, where there is a weighting placed dependent on the level (not year taken) of the course indicated in the Handbook.

Opportunities Your time at university should not only revolve purely around your studies and your results do not fully dictate your understanding of engineering.

However, by maintaining a consistently high WAM, there are several opportunities that are made available to you. Some notable opportunities have been included below.

Becoming a Demonstrator: If you would like to work for the school as a paid demonstrator on a course that you have completed, you are able to apply via the CVEN Intranet. The selection of demonstrators is highly dependent on your WAM and performance in the particular course, along with your past experience with teaching.

Program Transfer: One of the requirements for transferring programs will usually be that you must have achieved above a specified WAM. This mark will be different depending on the program that you would like to transfer to.

Exchange: Students who would like to apply for exchange may want to maintain a good WAM in order to increase the likelihood of being accepted into the school which they apply for. Depending on the competitiveness of the institution selected, the “cutoff” WAM may be much higher for some than others.

Industrial Training: Some companies (although not many) look at WAM when selecting applicants for interviews, and it is often a requirement to declare your WAM in the application process. Maintaining a high WAM could open up more opportunities for work and increase your chances of progressing forward in the application process, although it is certainly not everything.

Thesis: In your final years, students will be required to complete a thesis, which could be either coursework-based or honours research-based. For Research Thesis, a prerequisite WAM of > 70 is required. High Honours Research will also be made available for high performing students who have a WAM of > 80.

Honours Class: If students are aiming for a particular Honours Class at the end of their degree, they should pay attention to their Honours WAM. Class divisions include Honours Class 1, Honours Class 2 Division 1 and Honours Class 2 Division 2.

What is Honours WAM?

INDUSTRIAL TRAINING Industrial Training (IT) gives engineering students the opportunity to gain exposure to a professional workplace, culture and its expectations.

It allows UNSW's industry partners to work with current students and identify potential future recruits.

It is an essential part of professional development, hence it is a requirement at UNSW to complete your degree.

Most students will tend to start looking for IT in their 3rd or 4th year, however finding opportunities early on in one's academic journey allows for more flexibility and exposure to different specialisations that may interest you. It also allows you to practice and gain exposure to the interview process without the pressure of having to land the role.

Requirements At least 60 days of industrial training throughout your degree.

This could be a combination of Traditional Paid or Unpaid, Non-traditional Placements or Overseas Placements, each with their own set of rules which must be followed for the placement to qualify.

Moodle Course To begin your IT process, it is heavily encouraged to enrol in the Faculty of Engineering Industrial Training Moodle page early on (for example in 2nd year).

Many questions regarding the process and required documentations will be provided on this course page.

It will provide you with resources on topics such as where to find training, how to apply for training, and how to be successful in the process.

This page also includes information about Industrial Training Workshops run each term by the engineering faculty.

Prior to beginning IT, prerequisite modules must be completed via this Moodle course, and supporting documentation must be submitted and approved by the School. It is a requirement to gain approval prior to commencement of your placement, so it is crucial that you start the modules and documentation process early.

Documentation which must be provided includes (but is not limited to): 1. Letter of Offer/Contract from the company a. Company letterhead b. Duration of your placement (minimum of commencement date) c. Remuneration (if the placement is paid) 2. Job description (from company/supervisor) with technical engineering tasks you will perform in relation to Engineers Australia Stage 1 Competencies. This could be: a. Employment contract which lists your responsibilities (on company letterhead) b. Job Advertisement (from company/website) c. Job description (on company letterhead) d. Screenshot of an email from your supervisor/employer listing your responsibilities (from company email)

COURSE ADMINISTRATION

DROPPING & PICKING COURSES Sometimes you might change your mind throughout the term on the courses that you are currently taking. If you decide that you wish to withdraw or take on another course during the term, you are given the opportunity to do so. Although you are given the flexibility, please keep in mind your course progression so that you have a better chance of graduating within the standard time length.

Factors to consider when dropping courses include, but are not limited to: Is this a core course for my degree?

Is this cour se a prerequisit e/corequis ite for any other courses yo u are currently ta king or tak ing in future term s?

Which terms is this course available for throughout the year?

If it is an elective/general education course, will you plan to take this course in the future? If not, which course will you switch to for future terms?

If it is a core course , when will you plan to ta ke it?

Which courses will I need to reschedule in orde r to accommodate for this change?

These questions can be answered by visiting your relevant degree handbook.

Deadlines There are set dates during each Teaching Period (term) where dropping or picking up a course is possible without academic or financial penalty.

Please note that the deadline for picking up a course and dropping a course is different.

The last day to enrol or swap courses that you are taking for the term will usually occur by the end of the first week. To apply after this date, you must complete the Late Enrolment Request.

The last day to drop a course for the term would usually occur on the last day for the fourth week. It would be possible to drop a course after census date, however, financial and/or academic penalties may incur.

TIME'S UP 21

PROGRAM TRANSFER Throughout your degree you may realise that the program you are currently enrolled in is not right for you. If this were to happen, please seek advice from the Engineering Program Authority to see what options are available for your particular circumstances. They may be able to assist you in following the correct procedure to withdraw, add courses, transfer and identify any limitations without your academic record being affected.

Changing Programs The Undergraduate Internal Programs Transfer (IPT) enables program transfer within UNSW. This process allows for both the transfer between different programs as well as the transfer between single and double degrees without the need to apply through UAC. Please check your eligibility prior to using the service. This may depend on your enrolment status, age, current term of study, Weighted Average Mark, units of credit completed, academic standing, fees and program availability for the specified term. Additional advice may be given for international and international-sponsored students.

During the application period you can Apply for IPT via myUNSW. However, if you are under 18 years of age, you must contact The Nucleus: Student Hub to complete your application.

Changing Streams The stream declaration service may be useful for students who have enrolled in double degrees, of which the degree other than civil engineering may include majors, minors or specialisations. To change streams, use the Stream Declaration service in myUNSW. You may have initially used it to declare your stream in the first place. Here you are able to view your current stream, declare your stream or change your stream by following the prompts given.

Please note that not all programs use this service and you may need to contact your Program Authority directly. The Stream Declaration service will indicate if this is the case.

What stream should be my major?

TIMETABLING Students are able to register for their classes and select their weekly timetables, upon enrolling in courses for the term. Class enrolment and registration is accessed via myUNSW and done on a first come first serve basis. Detailed guides for both processes can be found at enrolment and class registration.

For each subject, students must select one of each class type available.

These class types are: LEC (Lectures) - Sessions where majority of the subjects’ concepts and theory are taught by the course lecturer(s). Lectures will take up the most hours of your weekly classes.

WKS (Workshops) - Sessions which focus on solving practice questions and problem solving relevant to the subject’s content. Tutorials are run by demonstrators.

LAB (Labs) - In-person / online interactive lessons, where students apply practical methods to collect and analyse data within an engineering context.

OTH (Midterm Exam / Quiz) - Fixed session when an in-term exam or quiz is going to occur.

Tips WEEKLY Arrangements If you have other commitments like part-time work, or require a long commute to uni, you may want to configure your timetable such that you come to campus less often.

Spreading out your classes throughout the week has its benefits too, such as lighter class loads on a day-to-day basis. Depending on the individual, this could prove more manageable. This approach works great for those living on or close to campus.

Use CrossAngles to easily explore all possible class arrangements for the subjects you plan to take in the term.

DAILY Arrangements For days with multiple classes, it is important to space them out appropriately. A 1-2 hour gap between classes is appropriate to give yourself a break (eat, talk to friends, sleep, do whatever you want to do to unwind) and prepare for your next class.

Timetabling back-to-back classes is advantageous as well, if a student wishes to finish all their classes within a segment of the day (e.g. morning or afternoon). However it is not recommended to timetable back-to-back classes for the entire day, as this can hinder learning.

An in-person tip: For back-to-back / closely spaced classes, pick classes whose locations are near each other. This minimises the amount of times you have to run from lower to upper campus within 5 minutes.

COMMONWEALTH SUPPORT & HECS-HELP There are two main financial support programs in place for Australian or New Zealand citizens/permanent visa holders which allows for partial or full deference of fees to the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) to pay it later.

Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) CSP is a subsidy by the Australian Government which results in you only paying the ‘student contribution’ amount of your unit(s) of study. A CSP is generally much cheaper than a fee paying place and, if you are eligible, you may have the option to defer your student contribution amount to a HECSHELP loan so you do not have to pay anything upfront. Please visit the Commonwealth Supported Fees page for the current UNSW student contribution amounts.

You may be eligible if you are either: 1. an Australian citizen who will undertake in Australia at least one unit of study contributing to your program (course of study)

2. a New Zealand citizen or a permanent visa holder who will be resident in Australia for the duration of your courses (unit(s) of study)

3. If you are an international student and you are obtaining or have obtained permanent residency, you must notify the University by the census date. There will be a requirement to submit evidence of the change prior to the census date of your enrolment

HECS-HELP HECS-HELP allows for students to defer their student contribution amount to after they finish their study. To be eligible for HECS-HELP, you must apply for or have received an offer to a CSP and you must be either: an Australian citizen and complete at least one (unit of study) course in Australia, or an Australian permanent humanitarian visa holder and reside in Australia for the duration of your units of study (courses), or

a New Zealand citizen and reside in Australia for the duration of your units of study (courses); and meet all of the long term residency requirements as follows: you first began to be usually resident in Australia at least 10 years ago, and were a child under the age of 18 with no spouse or de facto partner when you first began to be usually resident in Australia, and at the time of applying for HECS-HELP, you have been in Australia for at least: a total of eight out of the past 10 years, and a total of 18 months out of the last two years.

STUDY TIPS Study Spots on Campus There are places for you to study in all major lecture buildings in Upper, Mid and Lower campus, and you might want to decide depending on your personal preferences.

Do you prefer a quiet, productive study session?

The UNSW Main Library - you can typically find a spot on the upper floors where you can study quietly by yourself with ease.

Do you value the convenience of being able to grab a quick snack whilst studying?

Mathews building - easy access to Mathews Foodcourt right downstairs.

Do you like to study with your friends and have a chat along the way?

Quadrangle or Library Lawn - outdoor study areas are the places to be.

Study Schedule Studying an engineering degree can be gruelling at times, and it is hard to manage everything on your schedule if you leave everything last-minute.

Everyone has different study habits, however here are some potential methods and tips on creating a study schedule that suits you.

Prior to the start of term, spend time taking note of what deliverables there are for each of the courses you are taking. Divide them up into one off deliverables (major course assignments or exams) or weekly deliverables (mini quizzes or weekly assignments) and see when each of them are due. This helps you make a mental note of all the tasks that need to be done during the term, when you will be the most busy, and when you can still afford to take a break and relax.

Try incorporating weekly deliverables into a set weekly schedule so that it is done around the same time each week. This sets aside all the additional time you have left to focus on the bigger items on your list without falling behind on the items which can get you ‘free marks’.

Some people work well when focusing on one particular subject for extended periods of time, while others like to alternate subjects frequently to maintain interest. Work out what is suited for you and plan your study days accordingly. This could drastically boost your productivity and minimise time spent idle thinking about what you should do next.

Make sure you are well rested! Set out days or time blocks where you get to take a break from studying to focus on your hobbies, socialise, and enjoy your time as an uni student. A well rested you will be the most productive and also help you avoid burnout as you progress forward.

Use technology to your advantage! Take note of your study plan and commitments using digital calendars (such as Google Calendar) or productivity apps. They are easily accessible, customisable and allow for group meetings to be scheduled seamlessly into everyone’s schedules.

Additionally, make use of apps which minimise procrastination. Apps such as Forest can help friends study together while still concentrating on the task at hand.

Make sure your schedule is consistent. Tasks set for each week should be evenly distributed so that you do not fall behind with content.

Usually content progressively becomes more difficult towards the end of the term, hence do not think that it would be a good idea to cram everything into the last few weeks. Considering the length of each term, it is also extremely likely to fall behind, hence plan accordingly by making sure you attend lectures, go through content and attempt questions during the week that you are taught.

Don’t study just to pass! It is so important that you are not learning the content just to pass a course, hence do not just cram all the content at the very end! A lot of key concepts gets used in later courses in your degree, where lecturers will often only brush over or consider as assumed knowledge. Additionally, knowing what you study could help in the workforce, especially when applying to technical roles, where jargon and important concepts will form the foundation of what you work on.

This can often been seen tested in interviews for graduate roles.

Study Resources Typically, your course coordinators should provide a good amount of workshop/tutorial materials and past papers for you to study with.

However, if you are in need of more resources, there are several options: Check out the library or online for textbooks that are relevant to your course or recommended by your lecturer for practice questions or additional reading. Access to online resources can also be found here.

CEVSOC also provides a useful set of resources for various courses. Make sure to attend our events to stay up to date and speak to older students who can provide some useful advice and tips!

Asking Questions An important part of committing information to long-term memory is actively engaging with the content. Asking questions to your lecturers and tutors is the perfect way to do this. This is typically done via email or via the Moodle discussion forum for each course. If you are shy, most course Moodle forums also allow anonymous posting. Lecturers and tutors should be quick and are always happy to answer your questions.

Help Sessions Help sessions are a chance to get one-on-one time with your lecturers or tutors to ask them specific questions that you are personally struggling with. These are often run throughout the term, as well as close to exams and/or assignment deadlines. You’re paying for them anyway, so use your resources wisely!

Downloading Lectures Download your lectures from Echo360 or BlackBoard Collaborate so you can watch them on public transport and not kill your data.

Taking Notes It is scientifically proven that note-taking by hand develops a better conceptual understanding and handwritten notes are better memorised than typed notes. Therefore, consider taking notes by hand if you find it difficult to memorise certain points in your lectures.

Mental Health The university workload can seem daunting to new students, and it is completely understandable to feel stressed or burnt out by the volume and/or difficulty of work assigned to you. This can happen to any of us, and exam stress is probably relatable for most students.

However, it is important to note that it is not normal to feel prolonged levels of stress and regular burnout. An important life skill that should be practised throughout university is a self awareness of how you think, feel, behave and regulate your mental state. Practising your mental fitness will increase your ability to respond to life in all its richness and bounce back from challenges and setbacks.

If you ever feel burdened by stress in your studies, consider talking to a friend or family member you trust, or consult with a professional counsellor for help. Also, regular exercise, a good diet and a healthy sleep schedule are crucial in improving your concentration and the effectiveness of your study sessions. Try your best to keep them in check even during exam periods!

Please remember: If you are feeling stressed out by your studies or feel like the task at hand is difficult, many others are probably feeling the same way, so make sure to reach out to help each other.

Remember, your marks do not entirely define you as a student.

Maintaining a healthy balance between your studies, extracurricular commitments and social involvements is more important!

APP RECOMMENDATIONS Lost on Campus The UNSW campus is massive, so it is easy to lose track of where you’re going when heading to your next lecture. Lost on Campus is a good GPS app to use on campus to help you get to where you want to go with on screen map directions.

Cross Angles Scheduling your timetable can be challenging at times, especially for popular courses where classes fill in a matter of minutes. CrossAngles is a useful app you can use to preview your timetable schedules and available class times before registration starts, which will definitely come in handy in your university career.

Timeweave If you have friends studying other degrees at UNSW or at different universities, or if they just have a different timetable to you, Timeweave is a good app to install. VOLUNTEERING ARC ARC is an not-for-profit organisation run by students for students at UNSW, which forms the “umbrella” covering all students, clubs and societies. Their mission is to create the best student experience by getting students involved with Clubs, Sport, Volunteering, Events, Wellness and more.

Societies Being a part of the subcommittee of a student society is also considered volunteering. Here at CEVSOC, our subcommittee members work together in a team environment to bring various events to the Civil and Environmental Engineering community. If you are interested, consider applying to become a First Year subcommittee member and make some friends along the way!

AHEGS All arc volunteering work and society work are recognised on your Australian Higher Education Graduation Statement (AHEGS) when you graduate from university. This provides official recognition to students who have participated in co-curricular activities which enhances the development of graduate attributes.
