This week, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) revoked the permission for hundreds of thousands of migrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela— who entered the U.S. under a Bidenera parole program—to live and work in the country. A termination notice was emailed to affected individuals, stating their parole has ended and warning they may face detention and removal if they do not leave voluntarily. Over 500,000 people had benefited from the program, though it's unclear how many have since changed their immigration status. What do you think about today’s announcement that legal status has been revoked for so many all at once? Let’s talk about it…
Robert Vasquez: “This was when he first took office ….”
Christopher Mora: “I think things are about to get A LOT more expensive really quickly so anyone on a limited budget should stock up on food items right now. Also inflation is going way up by the end of this year. I'm just warning everyone to stock up on food and other household items while things are still cheap.”
Daniel DeVille: “Trump likes to pull out charts during his press conferences, and this is one he needs to pull out. The press secretary
also. I think the Democrats kind of knew that after failing to take down Trump, there was a good chance he was coming back. They needed to crash the country as fast as they could before he took office. That's how evil they are. They use people's lives like game pieces in a massive board game and then pretend to care and be outraged when a Republican stands up to take charge and reverse the Democrats' mess. It has to be done. The protesters need to know it's the Democrats in their own party that caused this and are being used.”

be upheld in any situation no matter how it may go one way or the other about the subject. But how about we bring something else into the spotlight? Where's the love and compassion for our veterans? Where is the compassion for our homeless veterans in need? Where is the same kind of love and compassion for elderly people who are in need of their trees being cut, lawn maintenance, home maintenance, etc.? Where is that compassion and that awareness? What about some compassion for our homeless here in the United States? Our very own homeless. Where's the compassion for the mentally ill and those who have been abused in so many ways? Where is that compassion and that concern?”
Heather Ann: “When we can take care of our citizens' suffering maybe we can take on others. While we have homeless veterans, child trafficking and overdoses we're in no place to be a sanctuary for anyone.If you're lifting different country flags and burning ours flags, deport them ALL!! I stand behind Trump.”

Ethel Shipton was born and raised in Laredo, Texas. She received a BFA from the University of Texas at Austin in 1989. Ethel worked for the Texas House of Representatives as a photographer for more than eight years. She lived and worked in Mexico City in 1990 and 1992, and then returned to Texas, settling down in San Antonio.
A strong conceptual base informs Ethel Shipton’s practice and encompasses a variety of expressions. Through painting, installation, photography, and text, Shipton spotlights instants of clarity that flit by in the comings and goings of daily life. Past works have centered on ideas of urban scenes, language, and attempts to process information. Time is an essential issue of her oeuvre. “Space and time, movement and place I see going hand and hand. These two elements continue to be groundwork for my artwork. We all continue to move between time and space on a moment-by-moment basis.” – Ethel Shipton.
Shipton’s work has been featured in solo and group exhibitions at venues including the Inaugural Exhibition of Ruby City, San Antonio, TX; Artpace, San Antonio, TX; McNay Art Museum, San Antonio, TX; McKinney Contemporary Art Center, Dallas, TX; Sala Diaz, San Antonio, TX; The Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College, Annandale-onHudson, NY. The Balero—a simple yet captivating wooden and colorful toy—was a cherished part of my childhood in Laredo, Texas during the 1950s. Introduced to me by my classmates from Nuevo Laredo during my time at St. Augustine School, it quickly became more than just a game; it was a bridge connecting cultures and friendships. The challenge of swinging the wooden cup that has a hole in the center with one hand and catching it on the wooden peg that is the handle was both exhilarating and frustrating, but mastering it became a personal triumph. The two parts are connected with a string. Those early days of play cemented my fondness for this traditional Mexican toy. It is not easy to catch the ball on the stick. When children play with a Balero a lot, they can develop agility and hand eye coordination.
As my fascination with the Balero grew, my older brother Peter and I made it a mission to have one. On our frequent trips across
the Rio Grande to Nuevo Laredo with our father, where we would stock up on groceries and get haircuts, we visited the bustling mercado. There, among the colorful stalls, we found the beautifully crafted Baleros and eagerly purchased one each. With our new toys in hand, we spent countless afternoons practicing and competing, determined to outdo one another with tricks and precision.
Before long, our enthusiasm spread throughout the neighborhood. The boys in the Barrio El Azteca, seeing our excitement, began acquiring their own Baleros. The once-foreign game had become a local pastime, connecting us in friendly rivalry and shared joy. The rhythmic clacking of wooden cups against pegs echoed through the streets as we perfected our skills and challenged each other to increasingly difficult tricks. The Balero was no longer just a toy—it was a part of our identity and culture.
Fast forward to the present, my wife Jo Emma and I often reflect on memories from our youth. One day, while describing the physical appearance of a man, she likened him to a game we played as children. At that moment, the name of the toy escaped me, and I felt a pang of frustration. Our discussions, which we cherish in retirement, often revolve around
reminiscing and keeping our minds sharp. Hours later, the name "Balero" surfaced in my mind, sparking an unexpected rush of nostalgia. I could hardly wait to share my recollection with Jo Emma.
Remembering the Balero was more than just recalling a childhood pastime—it was a portal to the distant yet vivid
memories of my youth in Laredo. It reminded me of friendships formed, skills honed, and a neighborhood brought together through a shared love for a simple yet enduring game. Though over seventy years have passed, the joy and camaraderie that the Balero brought remain as fresh in my heart as the days when I first played.

The Ruiz-Healy Art Gallery in New York City is hosting an exhibit Vast and Varied: Texan Women Painters that highlights several San Antonio Latina women artists. This overview essay is part two of my review of the exhibit and will focus on Ethel Shipton. The exhibit is on view at the RuizHealy gallery from June 12 to August 15, 2025. Women Painters tackles the Latina cultural milieu through themes of cityscapes, motherhood, mementos, and domesticity.
Ethel Shipton grew up in the borderland community of Laredo, Texas during a time when the border was more open, and movement back and forth across the Rio Grande international bridge was more fluid. The border influenced
Shipton’s interest in artistic endeavors. She told the local art magazine, the San Antonio Current, that her first exposure to art in many ways was walking through the markets in Nuevo Laredo looking at all the handmade objects–from metals, to ceramics, to glass works, to textiles–and becoming aware of the changing objects from season to season.
Shipton’s stories about growing up in Laredo resonated with me because my grandparents lived in Laredo before
moving to San Antonio at the turn of the nineteenth century. Harriett and I have visited many of the small towns and mercados of both sides of the border.
Shipton left Laredo to attend the University of Texas in Austin where she developed a deeper interest in art.
After graduating with a Bachelor of Art degree, she became a full time photographer at the Texas State Capitol. She has fond memories of photographing Texas Governor Ann Richards and Texas Senator and U.S. Congresswoman Barbara Jordan.
A move to Mexico City in 1990 sealed
Shipton’s passion for art. In Mexico City she lived in an art colony in the center of town several blocks from the famed Plaza Major. She stayed in Mexico for two years and returned to Austin in 1992. Harriett and I met her during her photography years after her return to Austin, but we were not familiar with her art work.
As a Latina artist in Austin, Shipton learned about the excellent work of fellow UT graduate Sylvia Orozco in establishing Mexic-Arte, a Mexican-American gallery and museum on Congress Avenue. Shipton’s art career began to evolve after she
moved to San Antonio in the mid-1990s. She rented a house in the famed “Compound” owned by patron of the arts Mike Casey, near Blue Star, an emerging art complex. She continued her photography work and developed a deep interest in canvas painting. At the Compound, she established a close friendship with wellknown San Antonio artist Chuck Ramirez. The greatest features of living in Southtown were its community of artists and its proximity to Blue Star where she rented a studio for $50 a month.

Curator and gallery owner Dr. Patricia Ruiz-Healy described Shipton’s conceptual practice as encompassing “a variety of expressions,” including text, and noted that her work centers on “urban scenes, language, and attempts to process information.”
A Glasstire reviewer explained that Shipton’s obsession with signs and signals–like those found on highways or on city streets– “becomes central to her work, transforming everyday objects into artistic statements that prompt deeper reflection on meaning and perception.”
going?”, Shipton incorporates examples of text, signage, and symbols. One sign reads “Rough Road” while two other signs warn “Street Not Thru” and “Detour.”
In addition, Shipton added the words “Donde Vamos?” [Where are We Going] and “Chaos.”
The experience of urban environments, specifically those shaped by the fluidity of the U.S.-Mexico border, is a recurring artistic device in Shipton’s work. Her art frequently draws attention to the ways language and information shape our understanding of the world. In her painting in the Ruiz-Healy exhibit with colorful flowers by a freeway interchange titled "Where are we
The San Antonio Current further noted that Shipton's use of text and typography in prints emphasizes her approach as both conceptually driven and rooted in the bare-bones presentation of language. A black and white companion oil painting in the New York exhibit has a similar question “Where are we going?” but below the highway overpass, she places several tents
similar to those used by homeless individuals. The lower highway leads to “Chaos,” a word Shipton repeats three times in the painting. The artist aims to engage viewers and knows that they will have ample questions about the objects and meanings of texts embedded in and near her highway paintings.
The Vast and Varied: Texas Women Painters exhibit introduces East Coast viewers to a complexity of South Texas and Borderland cultures that is definitively vast and varied and very exciting to experience through the eyes of Latina artists.

En los últimos días se ha estallado otra guerra en Medio Oriente tras un ataque no provocado contra Irán por parte de Israel. Este nuevo frente en la guerra regional precipitada por Israel en el contexto del genocidio de lleva a cabo en la Franja de Gaza ha desatado una ola de temor a través del mundo. El estado de Israel continúa expandiendo su guerra en la región supuestamente para la protección de su territorio pero la verdadera razón por las agresiones es que el estado sionista quiere expandir su territorio. Líbano, Siria, Gaza, los territorios ocupados de Cisjordania, y ahora Irán –todos han sido blanco para los misiles israelíes, misiles que en su mayoría vienen de Estados Unidos. Después de tantas provocaciones incluyendo un ataque a la embajada de Irán en Damasco, Israel decidió atacar directamente el territorio iraní, lo cual precipitó una respuesta inmediata por parte de Teherán, que ha lanzado ráfagas de misiles que han caido sobre sitios militares en el centro de Tel Aviv durante los últimos días (por cierto, Israel pone sus instalaciones militares dentro de zonas residenciales, usando a la población civil como escudos humanos). Israel es el principal agresor y quiere que EEUU sea su perro de guerra. Y si tomamos cómo ejemplo la historia, parece que EEUU va a entrar en otra guerra para beneficiar a Israel, como lo hizo con la guerra en Irak y los repetidos ataques contra Yemen y Siria. Sin embargo la mayoría de los estadounidenses no quiere más guerra pues en los últimos 25 años las guerras en Irak y Afganistán han cobrado las vidas de miles de soldados estadounidenses y millones de civiles de esos dos países pero también ha
costado billones y billones de dólares del gasto público sin lograr ningún resultado que beneficie a la nación y que solo han servido para enriquecer a las industrias petroleras y de armamentos. Sin embargo la clase política estadounidense es pro-guerra. No hay figuras prominentes en Washington ni en los partidos dominantes que aboguen por la paz y la desescalada de tensiones bélicas. No, todo lo contrario. La guerra es algo que une a los demócratas y republicanos. La industria de armas durante décadas ha comprado el apoyo del Congreso y de la Casa Blanca, sean quienes sean los gobernantes en turno. Las guerras imperialistas son un gran negocio para estas industrias y también para los miembros del Congreso que libremente pueden comercian con las acciones de las mismas empresas de armas para beneficio de las cuales el Congreso aprueba leyes para adquirir más armamentos de guerra dizque para la defensa nacional. Los grupos de presión israelíes dentro de EEUU como p.ej. AIPAC, han sabido manejar a los políticos estadounidenses magistralmente y hasta pueden conducirnos a una guerra sin ninguna controversia nacional, sin que los medios corporativos tengan que manufacturar el consentimiento del pueblo y del mundo como lo hicieron hace 22 años en el camino hacia la invasión ilegal de Irak. Ya la guerra se ha vuelto costumbre de manera que en las últimas elecciones tanto
Trump como Kamala Harris repetían las mismas mentiras acerca que la supuesta amenaza iraní sin diferencia alguna entre los dos. De hecho, Harris declaró durante su campaña presidencial que Irán era "el mayor adversario" de EEUU y en su discurso al aceptar la nominación demócrata afirmó que si ganara la presidencia, se aseguraría de que EEUU tuviera "la fuerza de combate más letal del mundo" –una afirmación bizarra y horripilante, ya que EEUU ya tiene las fuerzas armadas más grandes y poderosas de la historia y gasta más en ellas que las siguientes diez naciones. Trump en cambio, en su discurso de inauguración prometió que sería un mediador de paz y que pondría fin a las guerras… ¡vaya qué ironía! Es obvio que solo sus seguidores más fieles creen en todas las ocurrencias y mentiras de dice Trump y ahora parece que no pocos de aquellos seguidores se han rebelado. En los últimos días, tras la creciente posibilidad de entrar en la guerra entre Israel e Irán, irónicamente son los seguidores de MAGA que han sido las voces más fuertes de oposición a la guerra, pues parece que se creyeron todo lo que había dicho Trump acerca de terminar con las guerras y poner a "América primero" y ahora se sienten decepcionados ante el cambio de actitud de su líder. A pesar de lo que sostiene Trump, EEUU no es primero, sino Israel. Y en ese aspecto, tiene mucho en común con su predecesor Biden que apoyó a Israel hasta en la
consumación de un genocidio. Así es: lamentablemente no existe ninguna figura política en el liderazgo de la nación que estén a favor de la paz. En la política actual, los discursos bélicos predominan entre los dos partidos en el poder y los discursos de paz son relegados a una pequeña minoría de disidentes políticos y activistas de la sociedad civil. Ni en los medios de comunicación existen –ya todos los medios se han dado a la tarea de vender otra mentira como se hizo en el caso de la Guerra en Irak de 2003.
Así es que nuevamente nos encontramos al borde de un abismo. Estamos a punto de entrar en una guerra posiblemente nuclear que nadie en su sano juicio desearía, una guerra que ha sido impulsado por el gobierno israelí con la complicidad de la clase política estadounidense, y que sin duda costará cientos de miles de millones de dólares y cobrará las vidas de miles o quizás millones de personas inocentes. Esta situación descabellada es el resultado de la cultura política en EEUU donde existe un culto nacionalista de falso patriotismo y de adulación fetichista del militarismo y de los militares, donde la guerra es negocio y el gobierno es solo un intermediario para la venta de armas.
Existe poco optimismo en este ambiente pero lo cierto es que debemos luchar enérgicamente por la paz y por abandonar las armas. Si no acabamos con las guerras, ellas acabarán con nosotros.

Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) is proud to announce a transformative partnership with Laredo College that will open new doors for students across South Texas. On Thursday, June 26, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., OLLU will host a signing ceremony to formalize a comprehensive transfer agreement with Laredo College. The event will take place on the 3rd floor of the Sr. Elizabeth Ann Sueltenfuss Library at OLLU’s San Antonio campus.
This initiative marks a significant milestone in expanding educational access and equity for community college students pursuing four-year degrees. The agreement aims to streamline the
transfer process, eliminate barriers, and strengthen academic pathways between the two institutions.
This agreement is more than a memorandum. It is a shared declaration of purpose. Together, Laredo College and OLLU are clearing pathways, removing barriers, and accelerating access to four-year degrees for students who will go on to lead, serve, and transform our communities of San Antonio, South Texas, and beyond.
OLLU, a Hispanic-Serving Institution, has long been committed to increasing access to higher education for firstgeneration and underrepresented students. The partnership with
Laredo College builds on this mission, creating new opportunities for students from economically and geographically underserved communities. By reducing the barriers between associate and bachelor’s degree programs, this collaboration supports students in achieving academic success, economic mobility, and community leadership.
The ceremony will feature remarks by university and college leaders, including representatives from the OLLU Board of Trustees, the Congregation of Divine Providence, and honored guests from Laredo College. Faculty, staff, and members of the broader university community are invited to attend.
This partnership reflects OLLU’s ongoing mission to serve first-generation college students, promote educational equity, and empower future leaders through innovative collaborations.

PARA UN PERMISO DE CALIDAD DEL AIRE NÚMERO DE PERMISO PROPUESTO: 43833
SOLICITUD Y DECISIÓN PRELIMINAR. SOUTHWEST RESEARCH INSTITUTE, 6220 Camino Culebra, San Antonio, Condado de Bexar, Texas 78238, ha solicitado a la Comisión de Calidad Ambiental de Texas (TCEQ, por sus siglas en inglés) la emisión del Número de Permiso de Calidad del Aire Propuesto 43833, que autorizaría la construcción del un nuevo proceso de investigación del craqueador rotatorio de olefinas (ROC) y su antorcha asociada ubicado en 6220 Camino Culebra, San Antonio, Condado de Bexar, Texas 78238. Esta solicitud fue procesada de manera expedita, conforme a lo permitido por las reglas de la comisión en el Título 30 del Código Administrativo de Texas, Capítulo 101, Subcapítulo J . Esta solicitud se presentó a la TCEQ el 10 de octubre de 2024. La instalación propuesta emitirá los siguientes contaminantes: plomo, contaminantes peligrosos del aire, monóxido de carbono, óxid os de nitrógeno, compuestos orgánicos, material particulado, incluido material particulado con diámetros de 10 micrones o menos y 2.5 micrones o menos, sulfuro de hidrógeno y dióxido de azufre. Entrando al relevo el ex campeón pitcher Josh Gill, quien cedió terreno tras llenársele la casa y luego aceptar doblete conectado por el bateador rival Nica Castañeda, quien puso la pizarra 5-5 carreras. El Caminante anclado en la antesala y con las bases llenas, Gill, enfrentó al primera base Mauricio Esparza “Malaka”, quien echando su experiencia por delante en este cerrado partido, conectó imparable partiendo la segunda base internándose al jardín central dandole tiempo suficiente a El Caminante para una pizarra de 6-5 carreras. A charitable program, that provides free bicycles to children and adults in need, is about to receive its largest donation to date from a single organization.
Cycle It Forward has been chosen as the 2025 recipient for the Texas Aggregates and Concrete Association (TACA) Community Service Bike Build. Members of TACA will assemble 75 new children’s bicycles from start to finish on Wednesday, June 11, 2025. The bike build will take place from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
during TACA’s 71st Annual Meeting at the JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort & Spa, located at 23808 Resort Parkway. The bicycles were purchased with funds donated by TACA member sponsors.
The bikes will be presented from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on-site to Cycle It Forward partners, Carabin Shaw and Blue Cares.
This donation will mark the largest bicycle donation Cycle It Forward has received so far from a single organization, since the program started in December 2023. Cycle It
Forward is the brainchild of Jamie Shaw, the owner of personal injury lawyers, Carabin Shaw. Previous recipients of the TACA Community Service Bike Build have included other local charities such as SA Youth and the San Antonio Police Department’s Blue Santa program.
Cycle It Forward accepts donations of new and gentlyused bicycles all year round. Those wishing to donate their bicycle to the program can drop theirs off directly to our partners at the Level Up Bike Shop, located at 1409 E. Commerce. The bike shop
will check each bicycle for safety and make any minor repairs if necessary. Pickup is available for donors who live in San Antonio.
