What is a lapping machine: Precision finishing machines include lapping machines. Lapping is a type of loose abrasive machining that is different from honing or grinding in that the abrasive action comes from a slurry rather than a solid abrasive like a grinding wheel.

LAPPING ACCESSORIES MONOCHROMATIC LAMP The GMT Monochromatic Lamp makes it simple and quick to measure flatness within 0.6 microns.

Using sodium lamps, these attractive and self-contained units produce a bright, glare-free light of a known wavelength. On most reflective or semi-reflective surfaces, you can see bands of light and dark that contrast with one another. Consequently, when used with GMT optical flats, they measure surface flatness within 0.3 millimeters on parts up to 75 millimeters in diameter.

OPTICAL FLAT GMT optical flats are constructed of clear fused quartz. Quartz flats are superior due to their superior abrasion resistance and extremely low thermal expansion. There are five different diameters of GMT optical flats: 50, 75, 100, and 150 mm.

POLISHING STAND Typically, after work has been lapped, sample parts must be briefly hand-polished in order to achieve the highest reflectivity for light band interpretation. A fine-grade polishing paper can be effectively handled by GMT polishing stands, which allow for easy access to a new section of paper whenever it is desired while holding it tightly to avoid rounding the work's edges. A standard roll of polishing paper is used in the stand.
