Land-Based Engineering Job Profile

Activity Instructions

1.Introduction: "What do you think about when you hear the term 'Land-based engineering. Discuss initial ideas and write them down. Challenge assumptions: Show them a copy of ‘A Window Into Outdoors’. Explain: "Today, we're going to investigate how modern agriculture is changing and what diverse career opportunities it offers.”

2.Distribute/Display Page 36 - 39 of ‘A Window Into Outdoors’ to small groups (2-3 pupils) and ask the pupils to read them.

3.Activity: Land-Based Engineering Job Profiles. Direct pupils to the "Case Study" pages featuring Robbie Gray and William Muir." Ask the pupils to answer the following questions about Robbie and William. Alternatively they can complete the job profile sheet"

"What is their job title?"

"What do they enjoy most about their job?” (Refer to their quotes).

"What skills do you think Robbie and William need for their role? How are their jobs different and similar?"

4.Wrap-Up:

Recap: "What new things have you learned about careers in Land-based engineering?

"Do any of these careers spark your interest? Why?”

“What skills do you already have that could be useful in these areas, even from hobbies or other subjects?"

"Why do you think it's important for us to know about industries like Land-Based Engineering, even if we don't plan to work in them?"

Extension Task:

1.Ask the pupils to look at the Lantra Scotland website and find out about 5 careers that they didn’t know were part of the Land-based engineering sector. Now ask them to create a job advert for one of them.
