went to a game with his father and grandfather, readily agreed. “I have my grandfather’s Tigers jacket. I still wear it when it’s chilly, and especially if there is a game,” Caselli said. Preparation for the production included access to spots in Comerica Park most fans only dream of seeing, including the tunnel where Harwell stood prior to making his farewell speech.

Both Major League Baseball — which provided numerous images — and the Detroit Tigers organization were supportive of the production, Caselli said. “(Their position) was, ‘He is a legend. What do you want us to do?” Caselli recalled. Longtime Harwell family friend Gary Spicer assisted with the loan of photos from the Ernie Harwell Sports Collection at the Detroit Public Library, all of which helped bring the production together. “Ernie: The Play” tries to strike a balance between dyed-in-the-wool baseball fans and theatergoers eager for a good story, “ Caselli said.
