Library hosts video game tournament Jan. 18 Adult and teen book discussion This is the last week to sign up for the book discussion on “The Choice” by Nicholas Sparks. The discussion will be led by Library Board Chairperson Nancy Marks, and will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 18. We will be finished before 8 p.m. The sign-up sheet is at the circulation desk as you enter the library on the main floor. Video games The next video game tournament will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 18, from 5 to 8 p.m. The game will be Smash Brothers Brawl. Lock-in Our next teen lock-in (for grades six through 12) will be on Saturday, Jan. 29, from 6 to 11 p.m. The doors will open at 5:45 p.m. and close at 6:15 p.m. Sign up starts this Monday, Jan. 17, and you can pre-register until 5 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 28. Teens that sign up early will only pay $3 whereas those who sign up at the door will be required to pay $5. To pre-register go to the children’s reference desk at the library. You will be given a permission slip that you must return signed by your guardian to attend the lock-in. All teens must have a permission slip signed by their guardian to enter the library. In case you sign up late or forget your permission slip we will have extra copies at the door. Space is limited so we strongly recommend that you sign up early. Only the first 40 kids to sign up will be allowed entry! At the lock-in there will be video games, crafts, food, board games, and more. As a bonus, Patrick Reynolds has created a game and he will have it available to demo and share your opinion that night.

Winter story time/lap time Registration for winter story time and lap time is going on right now. The sessions will start the week of Jan. 24 and last for eight weeks. Please call (517) 647-6981 ext. 3 or e-mail pdlchildrens@cablespeed.com to register. We will need your name, your child’s name, the age of your child, and your phone number. Storytime is for kids ages 3-5. The program lasts for about a half hour and while at the library the kids will listen to stories, sing songs, Library and make a craft. lines Storytimes will be on Wednesday (starting Jan. 26) Jan Mosser at 6:30 p.m.) and Thursday and Kristie Reynolds (starting Jan. 27) at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Please note that we have two sessions on Thursday. Laptime is a program designed for kids 12 to 35 months. It’s approximately 15 minutes long. The routine is similar every week, with songs, stories, and finger plays. The program will begin on Friday, Jan. 28, at 10:30 a.m. New classes We are going to be offering three new classes at the library about Craig’s List, eBay, and Facebook. These are beginner classes for patrons who are interested in learning about the programs. The eBay class will be taught on Feb. 2 from 10 to 11 a.m., the Craig’s List class will be taught on Feb. 9 from 10 to 11 a.m., and the Facebook Page will be taught on Feb. 16 from 1 to 2 p.m. If interested please call (517) 647-6981 ext. 3.

Supper Club meets Jan. 20 PORTLAND — The Portland Supper Club will be hosting another community health enhancement lecture program as part of its ongoing lecture series. The event will take place Thursday Jan. 20, at 6:30 p.m. A free luncheon/social time and recipe sampling of heart healthy foods will take place

from 6:30 to 7 p.m. just prior to the program. The event will take place at the Portland Middle School’s Home Economics room 127. The classroom is opposite the main office. The topic for the evening will be “apoptosis and phytochemicals, a new direction in cancer research.” Dan

Computer classes Adult computer classes are going to start up again the week of Jan. 17. This is a four session class and will run on Mondays and Wednesdays for two weeks (Monday, Jan. 17 and 24 and Wednesday, Jan. 19 and 26). We teach basic computer skills, the first class is about hardware and software of a computer, the second class focuses on Microsoft Word, the third class is on searching the Internet, and the fourth class we help you set up your e-mail and go over the basics of it. Please call (517) 647-6981 ext. 4 to sign up. County book discussion The next book we will be discussing is a non-fiction book called “The Bath Massacre” by Arnie Bernstein. This true event happened in Bath, Michigan in 1927, when a school board member set off explosives concealed in the basement of the local school. Bernstein will speak at the Ionia Theater at 7 p.m. on March 31; this will include a book signing. Woodcutters display Check out the wonderful display of wood carvings, large and small, produced by Gary Arens and fellow members of the Greater Lansing Woodcarvers Club. On display is an amazing life sized carving of Gary’s dog, Lucy-Lou and a beautiful American eagle. Carving class Gary Arens and friends will host a soap carving class for children ages 8-14 on Saturday, Jan. 29, at 1 p.m. at the library. Please sign up in the children’s room. We have to limit the class, so the first to sign up will be the ones able to attend. Jan Mosser is the director of the Portland District Library and Kristie Reynolds is the youth librarian.
