wide network, as well as from grocery store chains that have unsold merchandise, before it’s distributed to local food pantries and then to clients. But food producers’ surpluses aren’t as great of a surplus as in years past, he said, due to better packaging and more precision in the quantity stores order to fill shelves. “That’s the biggest dropoff,” Karr said of the food industry. “They’ve gone conservative just because the market is conservative.”
L&L closings hurt When stores close — or in the case of L&L Food Center, an entire chain — the effect is multiplied, Karr said. Food banks lose a supplier and consumers find themselves without a grocery in proximity. That can be profound for the poor. Since the recession, food pantry employees say they have helped more people who never before needed assistance. Cristo Rey Community Center’s Lansing food pantry served 876 people last month, up 16 percent from the 752 aided in September 2010, program coordinator Cindi Benavides said. That doesn’t include a new fresh food delivery program this year that brought last month’s total to 1,331. “Before, the families were one person in the household. What you’re seeing now is multiple families in a household,” she said. “It causes a lot of strain on the pantry.”
The league is concerned about new asset testing the state Department of Human Services requires for people to receive food assistance, in that the newly unemployed could first have to drain their savings in order to qualify for help. The state also cut a tax credit for food bank donors. And in January, state unemployment benefits will be scaled from 26 weeks to 20.

The Lansing Housing Commission is the only tenant left at Oliver Towers, a high-rise apartment building damaged by fire in 2000. Under the proposal, Davenport wanted to trade its present location to the city for the mostly vacant Oliver Towers high-rise. Davenport would have owned the block surrounded by Shiawassee and Ionia streets and Capitol and Seymour avenues.
New building The university then would have razed Oliver Towers and built a 60,000-square-foot structure — at a construction cost of at least $11 million. The Oliver Towers property is valued at $2.26 million to $2.52 million. The college’s campus has been valued at $2.33 million. Fostering good readers I f there’s one message that educators would like to impress upon parents, it’s this — it’s never too early to start reading to a child. Being read to exposes children to language and story structure, which then serve as a foundation for learning to read on their own. It’s also a comfortable, loving experience, because a baby hears a familiar voice while being held close. The actual words matter less than the shared experience between parent and child. As children get older they begin to focus on the actual book being read. This gives parents the opportunity to point to pictures and name the people or objects, helping increasing the child’s vocabulary. It’s a fact that children who have been read to enter school with a much bigger vocabulary — that is, a list of words they have heard and recognize — than those who have not had that experience. That’s a big advantage when it’s time to start learning to read on their own. Another advantage is that children who have been read to by a parent tend to think of reading as a pleasant experience. They also have a basic understanding of

how a book works — that the words on the page contain the story, that the pages turn and that in our culture we read from left to right. Once children are beginning to read on their own, they’ll enjoy reading aloud themselves. Reading to a loving adult helps them gain confidence. It also reinforces the idea of reading as a cozy experience. That encourages them to read and practice more. Even when children become more proficient readers, it’s a mistake to stop reading aloud to them. They can understand and enjoy many stories that they are not yet able to read on their own. Lansing Community Newspapers and The Wharton Center for the Performing Arts are looking for high school students to take on the mantle of a “Rising Star.” In this program, youth writers interview actors, singers and musicians who will perform at the Wharton Center and will also attend performances and write about their impressions. Last year a dozen students took part,
producing stories for LCN’s community oriented weekly newspapers and community Web sites. Lansing dropout rate more than 25% Church leaders look to raise awareness of help programs Kathleen Lavey klavey@lsj.com
The number isn’t pretty: The dropout rate for Lansing School District students who started school in 2006 and were supposed to graduate in 2010 is 25.7 percent. Compare that with 22.4 percent in Grand Rapids, another large, urban district, or 1.76 percent in suburban Okemos. “There’s an excessively high dropout rate for everyone, but especially among Hispanics and black students,” said the Rev. Fred Thelen, pastor at Cristo Rey Catholic Church in south Lansing. But he and other leaders of a Lansing coalition of churches hope to help change that. Action of Greater Lansing will
host a forum tonight designed to call attention to the issue and make families aware of resources available to them. The forum is known as the Nehemiah Assembly, named for the biblical Nehemiah who mobilized the citizens of Jerusalem to each take responsibility for rebuilding a segment of the ruined city walls. Call to Action is made up of more than a dozen local congregations, including Cristo Rey and Union Missionary Baptist Church. “The idea is to really try to bring greater justice and equality,” Thelen said. Thelen said the dropout issue came up again and again during discussions involving about 400 people at local churches last spring. “This is one of the key issues to emerge from that,” he said. The group will focus first on two things: Raising awareness of programs designed to bring

dropouts back to school such as Lansing’s Advance Path academies and boosting early childhood education. The Lansing School District started the Advance Path academies last year at each of its three high schools. With close supervision by teachers, students work online in four-hour shifts to complete classes they’ve missed or failed. The district also recently expanded the number of slots available in its free, all-day preschool program for 4-yearolds. “We want to use our resources to publicize these,” Thelen said. Jim Davis, deputy superintendent for the Lansing School District, said the district welcomes
the attention to the issue. “We have to have good information getting out to parents on what the programs are, and when the community joins us in getting out the information, we’re all for that,” he said. “We spend a huge amount of our own time looking at our dropout rate.” Davis said the focus on preschool is an important way to cut the dropout rate in the future. “It’s much easier to do something at the beginning, to do something constructive,” he said. “Kids who are prepared are going to do better in school.” Nationwide, Davis pointed out that boys drop out of high school at a higher rate than girls. Only about half of black or Hispanic
boys finish high school in four years. “We’ve got to get through to them and get them to come to us,” he said. In addition to the dropout rate, the Nehemiah Assembly will address two other issues: access to health care for seriously ill kids and civil rights for immigrants. Health care was the main topic of the last Nehemiah Assembly in 2009, at which Sparrow Hospital and the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine agreed to work together on the issue.
