BOUNCING BACK

After failed bid for governor, it’s business as usual for Lansing’s leader By SUSAN VELA svela@lsj.com

ansing Mayor Virg Bernero is trying to bounce back from losing the state’s top political race. The week after losing the governor’s race to Republican Rick Snyder, Bernero’s discontent rained down on the City Council for blocking a developer’s pursuit of incentives for the downtown Marketplace project. On the ﬂip side, the mayor earlier this week celebrated $136,000 in arts and cultural grants. And should another hot seat — such as a congressional spot — become available, Bernero’s not sure if he’ll run again. “Hard to say,” Bernero said, shaking hands and greeting familiar faces at Monday’s news conference to announce the grants. “Plenty of time to think about it.” Bernero is terse when discussing any future besides the next three years he’ll serve as mayor. Political experts say he should do exactly what he’s trying to do — establish a prosperous record of building Lansing’s future. “What Virg Bernero should do

is be a great mayor,” said Bob Kolt, an Okemos-based Democratic strategist. “He should be a great mayor for Lansing as long as he possibly can. “It’s a good job. He can do a lot. Really, he’s been off for a year. He certainly has captured some statewide recognition. He’s proven, even against all odds, he can put up a good ﬁght.” Now that the courts have lifted the barrier for developer Pat Gillespie’s Marketplace incentives, Bernero wants to turn his attention to economic development in REO Town and preparations for 600 new jobs at General Motors Co.’s Lansing Grand River plant. There’s also “a few other things we haven’t even yet announced economic-wise,” Bernero said. Lansing’s cash-strapped budget also should keep him occupied, he said. “I am the mayor,” Bernero said. “I’m excited about doing the job and I’m excited about where we are. I’m excited that the ball wasn’t dropped. I’ve got a great team. You’ll have to stay tuned.” Bernero also will have to contend with the more resistant council members. That happened most recently with the 4-4 Marketplace votes. “The mayor has a job to perform and I assume he will continue to do that job,” Hewitt said in an email. “I wish him well in his future political endeavors and I am looking forward to working with him again here in Lansing.” Members of the Bernero administration, including Bob Trezise, who leads the Lansing Economic Development Corp., and Randy Hannan, the mayor’s deputy chief of staff, have publicly cheered the mayor. “Mayor, you never went away,” Trezise said at Monday’s grant announcement ceremony. “This is a nice opportunity to say how proud

we are of you.” Bernero won his second fouryear term as mayor in 2009. He announced a run for governor three months later after receiving strong Democratic support. While still considering a campaign, Bernero said party leaders had concerns about the electability of Lt. Gov. John Cherry, a longserving legislator and second in command to Gov. Jennifer Granholm. Cherry had dropped out of the race by the time Bernero announced plans to run. During his gubernatorial campaign, Bernero frequently highlighted his administration’s ability to create jobs and its ability to balance the budget. He also touted the city’s relatively low unemployment rate, which typically trails the state jobless rate.

“Everybody knows Bernero at this point,” said Bill Ballenger, editor of Inside Michigan Politics and a former Republican lawmaker. “He is a person who runs from office to office. The only problem for him now is he’s run out of offices he seemingly aspires to.” Ballenger offered some advice to the mayor, who ran during a time when Republicans were in favor among voters. “Pick a better year,” he said. Pundits such as Bill Rustem, president of Lansing-based Public Sector Consultants, suggested building a city where college graduates want to stay. “I do think he’s got a good future as he continues to move Lansing forward,” Rustem said. “There will be opportunity if he wants to avail himself.”

to begin at zoo

Assisted Care for Seniors at HOME

The Potter Park Zoo’s 18th annual Wonderland of Lights kicks off Friday, Nov. 26. Thousands of shimmering lights will illuminate the zoo and delight visitors as they enjoy festive decorations and seasonal activities, including crafts and cookie decorating, story telling, animal presentations and holiday music. This family tradition also features life-size animal silhouettes and moving light sculptures. Guests can warm up by a cozy bonﬁre or with a mug of cocoa. And of course, Santa and Mrs. Claus will appear every Friday and Saturday evening to hear their wish lists. Wonderland of Lights will be open from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursdays to Sundays through December 26. Admission is $4 for adults; $3 for senior citizens; and $2 for children under 15. Zoo Society members will be admitted for free. Parking is also free to all event attendees. Stroller rentals are available.
