Memorial Day Parade on again May 30 event to include ceremonies Christie Bleck cbleck@lsj.com

MASON — After a year hiatus, Mason will once again have a Memorial Day Parade. The May 30 event will begin at the Veterans Monument at Courthouse Square at 8 a.m. with a reading of the names of late Ingham County veterans from World War I to the present day, said Bob Raab, Sr., commander of the American Legion BrowneCavender Post 148 who is handling parade duties on behalf of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post Jean R. Anderson Post 7309. The Legion and the VFW trade parade duties annually, he said. The parade will step off at 9 a.m. at Bond Park and move onto Barnes Street, turn on Ash Street and then to Jefferson Street. The route will travel on Maple to Sycamore Creek where wreaths will be tossed into the creek to honor the Navy.

TM

The Mason High School band will play the Navy Hymn, after which the procession will head to Maple Grove Ceremony. The names of veterans who died in the War of 1812 and the Civil War then will be recited.

Day of remembrance

“Memorial Day is a very solemn occasion,” Raab said. Therefore, Raab doesn’t want horns or screaming people at the event. “It’s a day of remembrance.” Raab also pointed out for whom Memorial Day really celebrates. “It’s not for the veterans who are still alive,” Raab said, “it’s for the real heroes, the ones who didn’t come home, who gave their lives so we can enjoy the freedoms that we have in this country.” Mason didn’t have a 2010 parade — only a ceremony — because the event had become what Raab called a See PARADE, Page 3

MASON — Recent Mason High School productions have brought previous nonmusical-turned-musical stories, such as “Big,” to the stage. The latest is “Little Women,” scheduled for 7 p.m. May 5-7 at the high school auditorium. Helen Hansens, vocal and drama teacher at Mason, said the production is faithful to the popular book written by Louisa May Alcott. There are a few minor changes, though, in addition to the songs that will be interspersed throughout the play. “It actually starts with Jo in the boarding house, and does a flashback back to Christmas 1863,” Hansens said. The story then reverts back to the childhoods of sisters Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy and continues onward. Hansens said she’s pleased with the depth the players are bringing to their characters. “There’s such distinctions within the characters you’d find in a family,” Hansens said.

From left, Eva Bachelder (Amy), Hannah Cheney (Meg), Abi Combs (Marmee), Myah VanWormer (Beth) and Alyssa Bernardi (Jo, standing) rehearse a scene from “Little Women.” CHRISTIE BLECK/LCN Senior Zach Riley plays Professor Bhaer, Jo’s mentor and eventual fiance. The professor, Riley said, is “very subdued, very proper,” which is unlike him. “He’s very short and quick, which is two of the things I’m not,” Riley said. But that’s where acting comes in. “It’s been a good challenge for him,” Hansens said.

Senior Alyssa Bernardi plays the headstrong would-be writer, Jo. “She’s kind of my opposite too,” Bernardi said. “She’s really confident, outspoken and kind of crazy.” Those aren’t the only differences between herself and the character. “I don’t speak my mind as much as she does,” she said. However, there’s at least one similarity: Bernardi acknowledged that Jo is

passionate about what she loves — writing — just as she is into art and theater. Riley and Bernardi said the roles also call for singing, and in Riley’s case, more than he’s been used to. Hansens noted that Bernardi is on stage for 85 percent of the show. But in rehearsals, those challenges appeared to have been met. Other players in major roles include: Eva Bachelder as Amy, Hannah Cheney as Meg, Myah VanWormer as Beth, Abi Combs as Marmee, Alex Guettler and Mr. Laurence, Stuart Shattuck and Laurie, Alysa Frease as Aunt March and Mike Hyatt as John Brooke. Mason High School auditorium is located at 1001 S. Barnes St. Tickets are available at www.showtix 4u.com or by calling the high school office at (517) 676-9055 ext. 100.

MASON POLICE REPORT

Email: lcn-custserv@lsj.com

Lansing Community Newspapers are published weekly by Federated Publications, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Gannett Co., Inc., 239 S. Cochran Ave., Charlotte, MI, 48813.

April 19: Officers responded to a possible drunk driver call after a witness followed a car he reported as being “all over the road.” The complainant, a retired police officer, reported seeing the car stopped at a railroad crossing and the driver reaching out the window and placing a cup on the roof of his car. He added that just before driving off, the driver reached out, retrieved the cup and pulled it back inside. The complainant also reported that at one point the car stopped, the driver got out and vomited, after which the driver got back into the car and drove on. The complainant then followed the car to a northeast neighborhood where the car was parked in a driveway. The driver got out and began pacing back and forth between the car and the road. Officers located the suspect as he exited a residence and found him to display signs of impairment, but could not determine if alcohol or drugs were the cause. There was also indication he had just received medical treatment, and investigation uncovered the fact that his operator’s license was suspended. A copy of the report will be sent to the city attorney for review of charges.

Car up for grabs

April 19: The code enforcement officer received an abandoned vehicle complaint from an area towing company. The car in question had been parked in a private lot, clearly posted in compliance with the State of Michigan Statute regarding abandon vehicle violations and impounds. The complainant reported the car was towed on April 14 in compliance with the statute at the property owner’s request, and now two separate persons were calling and claiming the car, one stating he had reported it stolen. The proper owner was identified so the complainant would know who could legally claim the vehicle. As of April 18, no one has appeared

to claim the car, which appears to be of less value than the amount owed for the towing and storage. The matter is closed.

Threat overheard

April 20: An officer responded to a threats complaint. The victim reported a problem with her son’s father who had assaulted her in Lansing. The son and victim reside with the victim’s mother in Mason, and this date a phone message was received in which the suspect — unknown from where — was threatening the victim and her mother. The officer listened to the message which stated, “…cuss her mom out, go over there and tie her down and rape….and blow her up.” The officer, the complainant, and the victim all agreed it sounded as if the suspect was telling someone who was with him what his plans were and did not realize the connection was live. It also sounded like the suspect was under the influence of some unknown intoxicant. The matter remains under investigation. The domestic assault report in Lansing is still being reviewed by the prosecutor’s office.

Complaints heard April 20: The code enforcement officer initiated a junk pile — consisting mostly of old tires — complaint on E. Elm St., a junk and brush pile complaint on S. Rogers St. and a junk and brush pile on E. Ash St., which also had an old door left at the curb. In the Elm and Ash complaints, the property owners are being contacted in an effort to acquire voluntary compliance. The resident on Rogers reported she was renting, but moving out because of poor response to complaints by the management company. The code enforcement officer will follow up on this matter.

Review pending

April 20: Officers were dispatched to an area service station for a failure to pay for gasoline and a disorderly person. Officers found an agitated suspect, pacing back and forth next to his car outside the business, and the complainant and a witness watching from inside. Officers were told the suspect pumped $20 worth of gasoline and

entered the business, saying they owed him money after his last visit and he would use that to pay the current amount owed. The complainant disagreed, saying the suspect had come back a few days prior and picked up money he had left there; thus, had no balance to draw from. The witness reported seeing the suspect out of control and stayed with the lone attendant until police arrived, fearing the attendant might be in danger. Security videos of this incident and of the day the suspect picked up the money he had left behind were obtained. The suspect’s live-in girlfriend was called and responded to pick up the suspect and his car, removing them from the premises. A copy of this report and the videos will be sent to the city attorney for review of charges.

Device not for play

April 20: An officer received a vandalism report from a high school student’s parent after his son’s electronic mobility assistance device was damaged, rendering it inoperable. It appeared the unit’s drive belt was broken over the weekend where the unit was stored at the Mason High School after it was forcefully pushed about while turned off. Security video confirmed three middle school-age males — believed to be from another community — were pushing each other around on the device during a school-sanctioned event. It did not appear the three were intending to destroy the device, but they were probably the reason the damage was caused. The matter remains open.

Behavior problems

April 21: Officers were dispatched to a domestic assault complaint but, upon arrival, found the complaint who reported no assault had occurred but described a violent outburst from her boyfriend while she was driving him home, adding the boyfriend was angry about an incident that occurred earlier. She stated that she pulled over when he began yelling at her, after which he exited the car. Officers then received another call where a man in the downtown area was requesting help in acquiring treatment for emotional problems. Officers located him and deter-

mined he was the same person just reported. He requested a ride to a treatment facility because of his anger and was released at the facility, seeking his own help. However, a short time later, officers were told the man had walked out of the facility and needed to be returned based on the reports he had given to staff. About an hour and a half later, the man called and reported his whereabouts, after which a sheriff’s deputy located him. He was returned to the facility and again left in the custody of the attending staff for treatment.

Mom takes charge

April 21: A Mason mother reported threats and bullying by a group of high school-aged males who allegedly chased her daughter and daughter’s friends while threatening to rape them and making other lewd statements. The complainant stated that the girls reported the incident to her and shortly afterwards, while driving in the area, she witnessed the four suspects exiting a business. She confronted the quartet with the allegations, which they denied. The complainant then went to the business from which the four had just walked out and made contact, which resulted in her obtaining names. The information was given to the reporting officer who is in the process of following up on the complaint.

Mason a mid-point

April 21: An officer responded to the 500 block of Hull Road where it was reported that a couple was engaged in sex inside a vehicle parked in a parking lot. The officer found the vehicle, parked, and walked up to the driver’s window, where he witnessed the pair in an embrace. Once the officer determined both were consenting adults and the female participant was in the male’s company voluntarily, he went on to find that neither was from the area but they had met in Mason as a mid-point for a rendezvous. The pair was released after each had received a citation for obscene conduct in public. The matter is closed. See POLICE REPORT, Page 4

“half block in length.” That low participation was down from what the parade used to be — 10 blocks long, he said. Raab called the recent turnout “embarrassing for what the day means.” However, he said the lack of a parade last year made people angry, but it also got the word out for the need for higher numbers this year. So far there are 40 entries for the May 30 parade. Raab, a Vietnam veteran, is getting help from World War II veteran Frank Phillips. “I think we’re going to have a very interesting

parade this year,” Phillips said. The tentative lineup includes local Boy and Girl Scouts, the VFW Color Guard and Rifle Squad, the American Legion Color Guard and Rifle Squad, Civil War drummers, a Legion float and marchers in various uniforms depicting several wars, including the Revolutionary War. Raab said a maximum of 20 decorated tractors will be allowed in the Memorial Day Parade, even if the decoration is just a single red, white and blue ribbon. Raab said the ceremony by the Veterans Monument will include a 21-gun salute by the VFW and Taps.

MASON POLICE REPORT Continued from Page 2

Safe, but cited April 22: An officer witnessed a man walking along the street near Jefferson and Maple with two bottles of beer in his hands, one which was open and about half empty. The officer stopped him for a talk and soon found he was obviously under the influence, but still able to function safely. The man emptied his open beer, refused the offer of a ride home, but accepted his citation for open intoxicants. He was released to go on his way.

Alcohol level high

April 24: An officer received an alert bulletin for a very intoxicated driver of an automobile that had just left a N. Cedar St. business. The license plate and residence information was also provided. The officer, being familiar with the suspect, decided to backtrack from the residence address and witnessed the driver headed home. As the driver passed, the officer noted his obvious appearance of intoxication and quickly maneuvered in behind the suspect as he pulled into his driveway.

Investigation confirmed the suspect was driving while under the influence, but after a breath test netted a .40 percent breath-alcohol level, the matter turned into a medical emergency, and an ambulance was summoned. At the medical facility the investigation of operating while intoxicated continued, and upon completion, the suspect was released for treatment. A copy of the report and completed investigation will be submitted to the Ingham County Prosecutor’s Office for review of charges.

Drunk driver reported

April 25: An officer was dispatched to a report of a drunk driver. Dispatch stated that a witness was following a drunk driver northbound on Cedar Street from Kipp Road. The officer caught up with the suspect at Cedar and Columbia, and after witnessing the erratic driving for a short distance, initiated a stop with the complaint information in hand. The suspect elected to turn into a parking lot, almost striking a large sign and spiking the brakes, causing the officer to swerve away, avoiding a collision.

The suspect then put his vehicle in reverse and was backing toward the police car when the officer quickly exited and yelled for him to stop several times before he did, after which the suspect stuck both arms out the window as if to surrender. Once the officer had the man out of his car, investigation confirmed that the suspect was driving under the influence. After a breath test produced a .20 percent alcohol level, he was arrested and lodged in the Ingham County Jail. The car was impounded. During a later telephone interview, the witness reported seeing the suspect leave a parking lot at Kipp and Cedar, proceed northbound in the southbound lane, then speed up and slow down for no apparent reason. ONONDAGA TWP. — The Onondaga Township Planning Commission will hold a public hearing at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 4 at the Township Hall to discuss the proposed Onondaga Dragway. The hearing was postponed from April 26.

Ray Comer of Onondaga has submitted a special-use permit request for the dragstrip, which had been open in the 1960s and 1970s but closed due to economic conditions. The Dragway, measuring one-eighth of a mile, is located on Bellevue Road just west of U.S. 127. The Dragway issue currently is under

appeal in Circuit Court as a group of residents is opposing construction, citing traffic, noise and other issues. The township cannot legally issue a permit for racing or construction during the appeal process. Circuit Judge Clinton Canady III has ruled that the preliminary injunction signed by Judge James Giddings prohibiting the oper-

ation of a dragstrip will be in effect until the matter is decided in court. Written comments from the public may be sent to the Onondaga Township Hall, 4756 Baldwin Road, P.O. Box 67, Onondaga, MI 49204. The site plan/special-use permit is available for viewing. Call (517) 628-2654.

Landscaper reaches 10th year Christie Bleck cbleck@lsj.com

VEVAY TWP. — When you walk through the doors of Bluegrass Lawn & Landscape, Inc., it’s not difficult to feel relaxed with the sound of running water coming from one of the display water gardens. However, the business is so much more, as evidenced by the fact it recently celebrated its 10th anniversary. Bluegrass is located on 10 acres at 781 Hull Road. However, the business used to be run out of the home of its president, Neil Sheridan, and one of its vice presidents, Shawn Zendler. Ten years later, the business has grown enough to fill those 10 acres. Also, Sheridan said four new employees as well as new equipment (trucks and a loader) were added already this year. Word-of-mouth appears to have contributed to Bluegrass’s success. “We have good customers, good help, good employees,” Sheridan said. “Ninety-nine percent is

repeat business or referred customers.” Sheridan used to test milk for the Dairy Herd Improvement Association in his early landscaping days, but eventually the landscaping part of his life took over. Sheridan said he likes working with the public, but also enjoys being outside — obviously a plus in the landscaping world. “I like to get out in the fields and do the work,” he said. Bluegrass is involved in all kinds of outdoor work, including designing and building landscapes, hardscapes (such as retaining walls), supplies, water features, tree spading, lawn care, snow removal and outdoor lighting. It also offers nursery stock. “Pretty much anything you can imagine,” Sheridan said. “Outside your walls, we do it.” Vice President Doug Byers is involved in design and sales. One trend he’s seeing, he said, is residents extending their indoor-to-outdoor space — fire pits and patios,

for example, big or small. Renovating landscapes is another big part of the business, Byers noted. “Most of our work has been renovating landscapes that have been in the ground for 20 years, so they’re just looking to upgrade or change,” he said. Bluegrass also is giving back to the community. Sheridan said that at its April 16 grand opening,

raffle tickets were sold and a putting contest was held to raise money for mulch to go at the play structure at Mason’s Rayner Park. A total of $163 was raised, which Bluegrass will match for a total of $326. For more information about the company, call (517) 676-9500 or visit www.bluegrasslandscape. net.

LESLIE YOUNG SCRIBES The following articles are part of an ongoing series written by Leslie Middle School students. LESLIE — The Leslie Aspire Program exposes students to different possibilities. There are 22 scholars involved. The students are selected for the program at the end of their fifth grade year. The Leslie Aspire Scholarship Pro-

gram was created by Leslie Middle School to help our at-risk students. The Aspire Program partners with the Big Brothers/ Big Sisters program, which selects a “Big” (a mentor) for each Aspire Scholar. Each summer, there are interviews for the mentors and scholars. Then, the Scholars are paired with a Big Brother or Sister based on similar interests. Once a week, they meet

to hang out and do projects. Field trips are part of the program. This year, Scholars, their mentors and their families went to “Mary Poppins,” “Stomp” and “Shrek the Musical” at the Wharton Center at MSU. They also attended a basketball game between the University of Michigan and Bryant University. See YOUNG SCRIBES, Page 12

AT THE LIBRARY Thais Rousseau

The pictures make it even funnier. A gigantic pig snout covered in old candy and other debris is one of my favorites. This book is a perfect choice for a silly read-aloud to a group or one-on-one. “Children Make Terrible Pets” by Peter Brown When Lucy the bear finds a little boy in the woods she names him Squeaker and takes him home. “Children make terrible pets,” her mother warns, but Lucy insists she can make a success of the arrangement. Lucy and Squeaker have a ball together, until the hard realities of bringing home a wild animal bring

Lucy’s confidence in her pet care capability to an end. The illustrations are simple yet effective in this role-reversal tale. “Snow Rabbit, Spring Rabbit” by Il Sung Na At first glance “Snow Rabbit, Spring Rabbit” may seem like just another concept book about the seasons. A small rabbit watches the ways many other animals cope with winter. Ducks fly south, bears go dormant and sheep keep warm with their woolly coats. However, the illustrations are whimsical and engaging, and send the message this particular rabbit has a unique perception of the world. It isn’t until the end, after spring inevitably arrives, that the rabbit’s own way of dealing with winter is revealed. The first time I read this book aloud there were exclamations of delight

over the perfectly delightful conclusion. This is a beautiful story preschoolers will enjoy again and again. Celebrate Children’s Book Week by checking out these books or some of your own favorites. Or bring your child to a library storytime! This week the Dansville Library will offer Movers and Readers for ages 1-3 at 10:3 a.m. Tuesday, Preschool Storytime for ages 3-5 at 11 a.m. Thursday and Family Storytime for all ages at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. appy Children’s Book Week! Since 1919, a special week has been set aside to celebrate the enjoyment of reading for young people. Connecting the right child with the right book at the right time is one of the most rewarding aspects of my job. Here are some of my favorite recent children’s books, all worthy of celebration: “A Pig Parade Is a Terrible Idea” by Michael Ian Black, illustrated by Kevin Hawkes Tongue-in-cheek humor and disgustingly wonderful illustrations make this silly book a laugh-out-loud favorite for the whole family. The book is a list of reasons why a pig parade is a terrible idea, from the fact that the pigs don’t like the uncomfortable uniforms to their preference for country music.

MASON — The wet spring has wreaked havoc on lots of area sports teams, especially Mason baseball, which played just two out of a possible 10 scheduled games in the last week. The Bulldogs split those two games, a non-league doubleheader against Charlotte on April 21. Mason was routed 11-3 in the first game, but got off the mat and handled the Orioles 5-1 in the second. The split brought the Bulldogs’ record to 4-2, which head coach Joe Botke said is not bad. “The way we’re playing right now, and the fact that we’re getting to play games and practice outside intermittently with the weather, we’re doing all right right now,” Botke said. “It’s been kind of depressing. You get excited for the season, to get outdoors, and it’s always a bummer to have to come back inside.”

The first game against Charlotte was also a bummer for the Bulldogs, who apparently wanted to be polite hosts to the Orioles. In addition to allowing 15 hits, Mason committed three errors and walked 10 batters, eight of whom came around to score. Cody Lopez and Cody Hamilton each had two hits in the game, which Botke said his team had to forget in a hurry. “We talk about mental toughness and refocusing ourselves in terms of what’s directly in front of us,” he said. “The guys are not keeping themselves down after an error or a bad inning or a loss, which is a good sign.” The result was an impressive 5-1 win, in which Mason committed no errors, allowed just three hits and managed to get the top of the pitching rotation some work. Charlie McNulty started game two and threw four scoreless innings, while Hamilton, Lopez and David Felt each pitched one inning in relief.

and

Saylor LaVallii went 2-for-3 in the game with a two-run double, Felt also drove in two runs and Lopez also had an RBI double in the game. Botke said that all things considered, he’s pleased with his team’s progress. “We’re coming around,” he said. “Outside of that first game against Charlotte, our defense has been very, very solid. We’d made only three errors total going into that game. Offensively, I think we still have a lot of room to grow. Our top three or four hitters have been hitting the ball OK. We just need to see some better production out of the middle of our lineup, as well as the bottom. But we’re coming around.” Botke said that he expects his team to be in the thick of the CAAC Red title race, and perhaps even make school history. “We’re hoping to pick up where we left off last year and make another run at the league,” he said. “We’re also still shooting
