Dyed in the wool hobbyist Seat-time waivers used at Summit

By CHRISTIE BLECK cbleck@lsj.com

VEVAY TWP. — Raising sheep has basically been a hobby for Neil Kentner. But it’s a hobby that’s paid off in communing with his flock, producing wool — and now, statewide recognition. Kentner is the 2010 Purebred Producer of the Year, a title bestowed on him by the Michigan Sheep Breeders Association. Kentner owns Wynsmoor Manor at 1718 W. Columbia, where he keeps his flock of mostly Jacob and Wensleydales. An admirer of sheep’s adaptability to conditions such as giving birth, Kentner said, “They’re just real hardy, and they get up and take care of themselves.” Of course, Kentner still has to keep watch over the flock. In the cold-weather months, Kentner said, the sheep must be fed grain and hay inside, but during the summer, they consume grass, water and a mineral block. Kentner also enlists the help of two sheepdogs: Winston, a Polish tatra, and Sophie, an Italian maremma, friendly dogs who live with the sheep and guard them from predators like coyotes. Kentner, who most recently was 4-H youth professional aide for animal

The Jacob breed, according to Kentner is a “real, old, primitive breed” with two, four or six horns and spotted in black and white. “They’re noted for their wool,” he said. Wensleydales, on the other hand, have larger frames and long, fine wool, and are excellent meat sheep, Kentner said. Kentner spins and weaves his own wool, and sells Jacob wool for $14 a pound and Wensleydales wool for $20 a pound. How-

ever, he’s looking to get into the cheese market. To get ideas, he’s perusing the book “The Cheese Bible.” It’s possible that Kentner, who also shows his animals, would sell his homemade artisan cheese to the Vault Deli, located at Jefferson and Ash streets in downtown Mason. “For us to have a Michigan-made milk product would be really cool,” Kentner said. There is room in the local business community for a sheep producer too. Doug Klein, executive director of the Mason Area

Chamber of Commerce, said, “Neil is currently past president, but for the previous two years he was president of the chamber. That twoyear term is an accomplishment unmatched since 1973. “Other chamber members have learned much from Neil about how tasty lamb meat is and about the many uses of wool fiber.” There’s also the greater overall benefit of simply breeding better sheep, or as Kentner said, “Looking to improve the breed and improve its purebred characteristics, I guess you’d say.”

MASON — With the continuing focus on the online world comes a new way of educating students. Summit High School, Mason Public Schools’ (MPS) alternative ed program, offers “seat-time waivers” to students who benefit from taking classes on the Web at home. Matt Stuard, Summit program coordinator, outlined the waiver process before the Board of Education on Jan. 11. The program, according to Stuard, allows students to work at home where they can take advantage of new online technology, with the school district seeing better enrollment. The students have 24/7 access to courses and develop skills for the workforce and post-secondary education, Stuard noted. Students best served through seat-time waivers, Stuard said, include those with attendance issues because of transportation to school, those with emotional or medical problems, and youngsters involved in athletics or a job. Expelled students also can participate. For instance, Stuard said

one student has been diagnosed with Lyme disease. “Coming to school is a real struggle for her,” Stuard said. Another student, from Dansville, drives from that town to school and then goes home in the afternoon to study so his mother can use their car for work, he said. Certain criteria are in effect for students to take part in the waiver program, Stuard said. Students must be paired with a certified mentor who documents weekly his or her contact with the students. Students also must log in 20 days during a 30-day count, plus take a final examination. Stuard mentioned statewide online learning statistics: In 2001-02, 73 students studied online, jumping to 7,512 in 2009-10 and dropping slightly in 2010-11 to 6,858. “I see this being used more and more over time,” Stuard said. MPS Superintendent Mark Dillingham pointed to Summit as a strong alternative ed program, which has a waiting list. “It’s not because it’s easy,” Dillingham said. “It’s because there’s accountability there.”

an apology for the dead animal and a Facebook posting has made veiled threats of retaliation for the incident. The complainant and his girlfriend were concerned they might be victimized by retaliation and wanted to make a report. The officer is attempting to locate the dog’s owners for follow-up. Records show the original car/animal traffic crash was not reported. Jan. 8: An officer stopped a car on Hull Road for an equipment violation. Investigation found all the occupants were violating curfew and two of the occupants were recognized as having been involved and adjudicated in recent larcenies and an auto theft. As a result, the two were on probation and, as part of the terms, were ordered not to be together. The driver was cited for violating her graduated driver’s license and restricted driver’s permit and for the equipment violation. The passengers were cited for their curfew violations. The two probationers were released to guardians, and reports will be forwarded to their respective probation officers, requesting violations.

Shoplifting on a whim?

Jan. 8: Officers received a theft complaint in the 500 block of Hull Road. The complainant reported witnessing the female suspect selecting items from shelves, then concealing each item in her purse. When the suspect went through the checkout, she paid for three other items and attempted to leave with $86 in unpaid-for merchandise. The suspect was positively identified and the items seized. The officer soon discovered the suspect had two previous convictions for retail fraud-third degree. She also had the money to pay for the items and stated the theft had been “purely an impulse thing” and that she had not come to the store with the intent to steal. The suspect was released from the scene, and the report will be sent to the Ingham County Prosecutor’s Office to review for the more serious crime of retail fraud-second degree. Jan. 9: An officer stopped a car for a traffic offense and, upon contacting the occupants, witnessed a bottle of vodka on the floorboards behind the front seat passenger who claimed ownership of it. Investigation found the seal was broken and it appeared partially consumed, but a test of the passenger found only a .02 percent breath-alcohol level. The passenger was cited for the open intoxicants, and the driver — who was not drinking — was issued a traffic citation only. Both were released. Jan. 9: An officer stopped a car for a traffic offense and no visible registration plate visible. It was not until after the car was stopped that the officer noted a “Repeat Offender” temporary plate in the back window — issued to vehicle owners convicted one or more times for operating while intoxicated or driving while suspended. Mason police report When asked why his driver’s license was expired the past four years, the driver reported never getting around to renewing it. The officer then discovered the driver’s operating privileges were suspended and he had no proof of insurance. He was cited for both and told to leave the car parked until he could get a licensed driver to pick it up. Jan. 9: An officer was called to a residential facility on Curtis Street after a resident reported wanting to hang himself. When the officer arrived, he found that a staff member had escorted the resident and his suitcase to the door to await the officer. Further interview of the resident determined he had tried to commit himself to a drug rehabilitation clinic, which referred him back to the residential facility. He claimed he was having physical and emotional problems because of his dependence and wanted help. The officer contacted a family member to obtain transportation for the resident to an area medical facility for evaluation. It was determined he should wait under the supervision of the residen-

tial facility staff until his ride arrived. No police action was needed. Jan. 10: The code enforcement officer received a sign ordinance violation complaint involving a mobile billboard truck. It has been determined the vehicle and its use are a violation of the city’s sign ordinance, and the vehicle and business owner will be contacted and asked to remedy the situation before enforcement action is taken. Jan. 10: An officer stopped a car for a lane usage violation. Investigation revealed the car was uninsured, as was verified by the owner who was a passenger at the time. The car was impounded and towed, and the driver was issued violations for the improper lane use and no insurance. He and the passengers were released to go on their way.

Craigslist harassment

Jan. 10: An officer received an alleged stalking complaint from a Mason resident who was upset about postings on Craigslist. The caller stated she sells items on the site and an unknown person keeps flagging her postings as “inappropriate,” after which they are removed from the site. She added she didn’t know why,

Recalling 2010 and welcoming 2011 at library Another new year! Looking over the last year makes me realize how fortunate we are at the Leslie library. I am thankful that library was able to be such a wonderful resource for our community. We have enjoyed helping our patrons locate books, movies and information, and teaching them to use all the new technology available to us and presenting various educational and entertaining programs. We are also happy to have an active Friends of the Leslie Library support group that helps us in so many ways, from assisting at programs and running their annual book sale in the spring (remember: we accept good, clean donations year round) to sponsoring our annual open house and reindeer visit. Last year they used their hard-earned funds to purchase a custom-made sorting cart. Their continued support and desire to help the library makes me feel very privileged. As a head librarian I appreciate all the benefits that being a member of the Capital Area District Library (CADL) system provides. Last year, CADL sponsored visits to both Leslie elementary schools from Barbara Bailey Hutchison, a Gram-

The Sit ‘n Knit group also had a wonderful year in 2010, donating 74 handcrafted items to Heartland/ Hospice patients. As we begin the new year, I envision our patrons learning and doing more with library resources. Maybe it is time to learn more about that pesky computer that you are not comfortable with. Pick up one of our Winter Computer Class Guides, or visit cadl.org/events, to find where free computer classes are being held. Many of you received eReaders for Christmas and have been learning to download books. We can show you how to access the library’s free eBook collection. want to learn or do, come to the library and we’ll do our best to meet your needs. Upcoming Leslie events include Preschool Storytime, meeting at 11 a.m. Tuesdays. Rural life subject of Darnell’s latest book By CHRISTIE BLECK cbleck@lsj.com

MASON — Ever the lover of barns, that symbol of rural America graces the cover of Cecil Darnell’s new book, “Barns, Horses & Interests Beyond The City Limits.” “I’m kind of excited about the book, and I had a ball doing it,” Darnell said at the Green Acres retirement community on Jan. 11. Retired from the Society of Manufacturing Engineers and the Engineering Society of Detroit, Darnell has authored several books about farm life, and the latest is no exception. It includes chapters such as “Fences on the Farm,” “Rebuilding the Farm and the Eventual Collapse,” “Deer in the Barn and Other Thoughts” and “Haying, Christie Bleck Milking, the Very Idea.” The book is a glimpse Cecil Darnell talks about his latest book, “Barns, into past rural life. Horses & Interests Beyond The City Limits.” “There are so many things in this that have changed over the last generation, or the last two genYour Community erations,” Darnell said. www.InghamCounty One example is milking CommunityNews.com cows. a farm in Barryton, said that in the early days, neighbors would stop with jars during milking time and buy fresh milk. “When legislation passed that milk had to be pasteurized prior to selling,” Darnell wrote, “the neighbors with glass jars quit visiting us during milking time. The barn cats were not put off so easily, however, and they stuck with us to the end.” Another chapter deals with “Cow Racing in Michigan,” which never caught on. Why? According to Darnell in his book, “When cows do not choose to run, they do not run. When cows are running as fast as they can, it isn’t very fast.” The barn also figures prominently in Darnell’s book. “Everything served to work around that,” he said. “The farm was the economic unit.” Over the last 20 years, Darnell said, attention has been paid to saving barns. An example, he said, is the Michigan Barn Preservation Network, based in Mount Pleasant. However, as Darnell noted in on page 34 of his book,

DANSVILLE — Schools were locked down for a half hour Jan. 11 after administrators discovered a handgun in the locker of a middle school student. Dansville Superintendent Amy Hodgson said two other students told administrators around 11:15 a.m. that the boy had brought the gun to school. The school system was immediately locked down, Hodgson said, until Ingham County Sheriff’s Office authorities could arrive and secure the weapon.

New business helps new-business software MASON — New technology firm QuickTech CPAs will take the frustration and mystery out of popular accounting software for local small businesses and nonprofits. QuickTech CPAs was launched in November by certified public accountants Dave Fassezke and Sharon Robbins who identified a need among their own client base for consultants experienced in both accounting software technology and business accounting processes. The partners have nearly 50 years of combined accounting and technology experience. QuickTech specializes in four areas: • Identifying appropriate

accounting software based on a business’s unique needs • Setting up software to effectively fit individual types of business processing • Training staff in basic or advanced software usage • Diagnosing and correcting errors within accounting records Fassezke, who owns his own CPA firm in addition to QuickTech, will serve as primary technology consultant. Certified as a QuickBooks ProAdvisor since 1999, he said, “Most small-business owners don’t have a resource to assist in initial set up of accounting software or with problems encountered during usage. Because we know the ac-

counting side of business very well in addition to the software, we can ensure the entire system works efficiently.” “The most popular software requested today is QuickBooks and Peachtree, although we can help with other packages,” Robbins said. “Adding this new service creates breadth to our CPA practices and allows us to better serve the business audience.” QuickTech is headquartered at 126 State St. in the same building as Robbins Accounting and Tax Service. QuickTech serves clients primarily in the Lansing region and can be reached at (517) 333-3900. — From QuickTech CPAs

Young Scribes shared their favorite stories. Students asked friends and family members to pledge money for reading. Each student’s goal was to raise $25, which will go toward field trips like scuba diving in the Mason High School pool, spending a day at Burchfield Park, traveling to Wild 100 (a nature preserve) and exploring Impres-

sion 5 Science Center in Lansing. Principal Carol Franz said, “I think the read-a-thon is a great way for students to raise money and enjoy reading together.” Sixth-grader Amanda Fitts said, “It was kind of cool and the books weren’t hard.” Sixth-grader Abigail Tif-

fany said, “It was fun. I love reading and it was a nice time to just relax and read my books, like my Abby Hayes books and my other book, ‘Spy Goddess.’ I got it finished. Well, overall it was awesome.” Sixth-grader Brandon Huttenlocker said, “I thought it was really fun. I usually don’t like to read. But read-

ing books I like made the day really fun.” Sixth-grade teacher Ronald Warner said, “I thought it was a great day that allowed students to have a good deal of quality reading time. It was nice to have guest readers visit our classrooms, too.” — From Sierra McDiarmid and Brianna Rice

College Road house fire fought

Mason firefighters are on the scene of a house fire that broke out shortly before 6 p.m. Jan. 8 at 1081 S. College Road in Vevay Township. A motorist driving by alerted a neighbor to smoke coming from the home, and officials were notified. Firefighters stopped the spread of the blaze, which began in the basement and spread to a bedroom. Assisting Mason were the fire departments from Leslie and Onondaga Township and the Ingham County Sheriff’s Rescue Squad. A corn burner was the origin of the fire, which caused heavy smoke damage to the home. No damage estimate was available, and no one was home at the time.

DELTA TWP. -- Mason turned what looked like a runaway for Waverly into a boys basketball dogfight, which the Warriors eventually won, 67-60 Jan. 7. Montel Smith led all scorers with 19 points for Waverly, which almost completely surrendered a 21-point second-half lead. Mason fought back and made it a one-possession game with three minutes left in the game, but could get no closer. The result gave the Warriors their first CAAC Red win, improving them to 4-3 overall and 1-1 in league play, while Mason fell to 3-3, 0-2. “It was a heck of a game,” Mason head coach Lee Chaney said. “If I’m on the other bench, I’m sweat-

ing for the whole fourth quarter. We let up. We had a couple of mistakes where we could have cut it to two or three points with a layup and missed it. We’ve got to finish those things so that we win games like this.” The man on the other bench, Waverly head coach Craig Fields, agreed. “A win is a good thing,” Fields said, “and we have four good days of practice coming up, so we can try to fix those things. It’s better to teach off of a win than a loss, definitely.” Waverly held a slim 15-12 lead at the end of the first quarter, but came out strong in the second, led by Dee Roberts, who scored the first five points of the quarter and had a steal that led to the next two, the start of an 11-0 Warrior run. Mason responded by quickly cutting the 14-point

lead to nine, 28-19, but Waverly went on an 8-2 run in the last 3:15 of the half, helped by Mason missing the front ends of both of their 1-and-1 opportunities in that stretch. Smith’s off-balance, desperation three at the halftime buzzer gave the Warriors a 38-21 lead at the break. Chaney said that his team dug itself a hole with their nine first-half turnovers. “We gave them about 12 points on the run in the second quarter that you just can’t have,” he said. “When we stopped turning it over, we started having some success. We had a lot more confidence after that, and we had a chance to win this thing.” Waverly took its biggest See
