Social media rumor caused float confusion By WILL KANGAS wkangas@lsj.com

HOLT — Call it a sign of the times. Rumors can quickly seem like fact once they are published on social media web sites like Facebook or Twitter. Case in point: This year’s Holt High School’s Homecoming parade on Sept. 24. Somewhere in cyberspace a rumor started and ended up turning into a fullfledged attack on Holt’s administration for not allowing a school club to have a float in the parade,

wasn’t any problems,” Templin said. But rumors can have a long shelf life on the Internet, and kept going. It even went as far as local gay rights activist Frank Vaca, who wrote a letter to the school and attempted to self-publish a story about the censorship on The Lansing State Journal’s website. Templin said he consulted the club’s staff advisors, Erin Umpstead and Dave Runyon. “Nothing but a rumor on Facebook,” he said. See Rumors/page 3

Count Day: Student loss slows at Holt in ‘10 By WILL KANGAS

The club is called the Gay-Straignt Alliance, and is made of gay and straight students joining together to promote tolerance. High School Principal Brian Templin received phone calls and letters from parents and local gay rights activists for not allowing the float to brandish the club’s abridged name — GSA — let alone have a float at all. The problem was, the GSA did have a float in the parade, with all kinds of signs, Templin said. “I told them that as far as I knew, the club would in fact have a float and there

HOLT — Holt’s Student Count Day numbers were slightly better than projected, according to school officials. It also indicates less students left than did the year before. “It’s positive in the fact that it was under what we projected as losing,” Holt Public Schools Superintendant Johnny Scott said. “But it remains a sobering fact that school districts everywhere are losing stu-

dents,” he said. Holt’s count dropped by 42 students. It dropped by 80 last year. The number of students a district has is important because it determines a large portion of the funding for schools. Holt’s enrollment has been dropping similar to other schools in Michigan. Since 2007, Holt has lost 141 students. But the losses have been tempered by gains through its Schools of Choice opportunities. Holt accepted 295 stu-

dents from outside of its district boundaries this year, according to Jan Dodge, Pupil Accounting and Data Coordinator. “We are happy about that as always,” Dodge said. “The program has brought hundreds of students to Holt.” Scott said he is concerned about the difference in numbers between kindergarten and seniors. “We are going to graduate a hundred more students than have started in the system in kindergarten,” Scott said. “That is a long-term concern.”

Five-week support group offered for loss of loved one Everybody grieves in his or her own way - and every loss is unique but one thing grievers often have in common is feeling isolated by their feelings of sadness and loss. That’s why Palmer, Bush & Jensen Family Funeral Homes is offering a 5 week support group during October and November - to offer a space to talk about loss in a setting where that kind of talking is supported; a space to express feelings of loss and not feel it’s something that should be hidden; a space to learn more about grief and realize that what you may be experiencing as someone who is grieving is completely natural and normal. The group will be meeting on Wedneday evenings from 6:30pm to 8pm at the Holt Delhi Chapel (5035 Holt Rd) for five weeks (Oct 13, Oct 20, Oct 27, Nov 3 & Nov 10). The group is free of charge, but limited in size so please register to indicate your interest (517-268-1000). Check out www.palmerbush.com for more information.

“I even invited Mr. Vaca to come on out to the parade and see the float for himself,” Templin said. Vaca said he felt sorry for the kids when he heard there might be a censorship issue, but was happy to know that the community supported them. “They got lots of attention,” Vaca said. “So much for the tall tales which made them a legend.” A similar incident happened a couple weeks earlier, when a few parents called to complain about Holt’s stance on wearing neon colors. “It was out there somehow that if any students came to Holt wearing neon, they would be suspended,” Superintendent Dr. Johnny Scott said. In an effort to make a point about social media rumors, Assistant Principal Chris Billingsley went to sophomore orientation with a sign that read “No Neon!” “We have no idea where that one came from,” Scott said. “But this is a cultural phenomenon and is how things are today.”

Holt Kiwanis keeps busy The Holt Kiwanis Club has been very busy the last three weeks with a variety of projects. On Sept. 10 and 11, they sponsored a paper drive and a food drive at the Holt Plaza. They collected enough papers to earn over $500 and collected a trunk load of food for the Holt Food Bank. On Sept. 16, the club sponsored a Red Cross Blood Drive. Forty-nine volunteers presented at the Holt Presbyterian Church and 43 units of blood were donated for distribution to area hospitals. The club’s goal was 40 units which they surpassed. On Sept. 24, the club held their fall bar-b-que chicken dinner. Close to 700 dinners were sold either as take out

Inspired by every day

When we think about our future, we see everyday pleasures and the good health you need to enjoy them. So when we created our new vision, we were inspired to set our sights high: to be recognized as a national leader in quality and patient care. To get there, we’ve made bold changes. Recently, Sparrow Hospital received Magnet recognition for nursing excellence—an achievement earned by only 6 percent of hospitals in the country. In addition, our Level I Trauma Center is the only one in the region, staffed with life-saving surgeons and specialists %$ hours a day. And that’s just the beginning.

Students learn about bullying Lieutenant Chris Kelenske from The Michigan State Police presented a bullying prevention message to the students and staff of Horizon Elementary on Sept. 29. Lt. Kelenske’s informed children about what bullying is and is not. He offered strategies and gave suggestions to help children when they feel bullied. “This is the fourth year in a row that we have hosted Lt. Kelenske to speak to the Horizon student body. His message is clear and concise. I am proud of our partnership with the Michigan State Police and appreciate our annual visit by Lt. Kelenske,” said David Hornak, Horizon Principal. Letter to the editor Thanks for providing backpacks for kids The Committee of GiveA-Kid-A- Backpack would like to thank members of the community for coming through and providing backpacks for Holt/Dimondale children to start school this year. 206 backpacks were given out for preschool through 12th grade. Included with the backpacks were all the supplies needed for each grade level and the smiles on the faces of the children as they opened them up was wonderful to see. This program would not exist if it weren’t for the help of Community Regional Foundation, Youth Division and the generosity of the people of Holt and Dimondale. Gratefully, Sandy Wriggelsworth, Secretary of Give-A-Kid-A-Project

If you have a child who is not reading yet, start out by enjoying one of our storytimes. They are offered yearround with the exception of May and September. On Tuesdays at 10:30 we offer Movers and Readers Playgroup for children ages 1-3. Babies, toddlers, parents and caregivers get together to socialize, explore board books and sing nursery songs with Miss DiAnne. Immediately following at 11:15 is Preschool Storytime. Children ages 3-5 are invited to listen to stories and sing songs with Miss Liz. PJ Storytime is an evening alternative. Families with children of all ages can visit the library in their PJs on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month at 7. This month we also have a special Firefighter Storytime on Oct. 4 at 4:30. Children will hear a story

read by a fire fighter, then take a tour of the fire station. For parents who are looking to enhance their children’s Early Literacy Skills, starting them on the track to reading success, check out our monthly Early Literacy Play Time. It’s for children ages 1-5 and meets on Fridays, Oct. 15 and Nov. 19 at 10:30. Be sure to call the library and register for our bookthemed parties for children ages 3-8, held on the last Monday of the month. On Sept. 27 we’ll throw a Llama Pajama Party, and on Oct. 25 a Kid’s Monster Mash will take over the library. Then on Nov. 29, children are invited to enjoy an Enchanted

Afternoon. For children who are already reading, sign up to participate in the library’s monthly Kids Read, which feature a book discussion, a craft, and games related to the story’s theme. On Thursday, Oct. 7 at 4:30, Mystery Kids Read will feature The Chameleon Wore Chartreuse by Bruce Hale. Holt soccer team blanks Okemos, 1-0 By SEAN MERRIMAN

Seniors bolster defense October 3, 2010

HOLT — Jamison McCaige gathered his Holt teammates in the locker room before the Sept. 27 game against Okemos and told each one of them to write down three things that they were going to do to help the Rams win the game. “If every player did their part and we worked together as a team, then we felt we were going to win,” McCaige said. “It can’t just be one player trying to control the game. It has to be team effort.” On the top of McCaige’s list read “hold Okemos without a goal,” a pretty steep task against the No. 2- ranked team in Division 1. But when it was all said and done, McCaige accomplished his lofty goal, and his teammates were right there to back him up. McCaige made five saves and freshman Alec Greene scored the game’s lone goal as Holt defeated Okemos 1-0 in a CAAC Blue showdown at Holt. “We all knew how important this game was and we all wanted this one bad,” McCaige said. “This is all about the work we put in and now we see the rewards.” Holt controlled the ball and appeared to be the more aggressive team in the opening half. But Okemos sophomore goalie Landon Collier was there to stop every close attempt that the Rams had as the game remained scoreless heading into halftime. Holt continued its aggressive play to start the second half and it paid off right away, as Greene was able to get past the Okemos defense and put in the game’s lone goal on a pass from fellow freshman Maurice Santamaria with 38:56 left on the clock. “We felt like in the first half we had let a couple of opportunities go and when that happens, a lot of the time you’re not going to get them back, so we were extremely happy to start off the second half like that,” Holt coach Aaron Smith said. “We try to put our freshmen in positions where they have the chance to do some big things for us.” Okemos (11-2-2) had a chance to tie the score late in the game when Holt senior Ben Gates received his second yellow card of the game and was ruled out for the final six minutes of the game. But the Rams’ defense held strong despite being without their leading scorer. Collin Mohr and Ryan Schooley, both of whom are four-year varsity starters, helped propel the Rams defensive front and put a stop to any scoring threat that Okemos had. “They are our quarterbacks back there - Ryan is our brains and Collin is our muscle,” Smith said of the senior duo. “They work great together and they have helped our defense become much better overall as a unit, which is what you want with the playoffs approaching here.” Collier had another strong game in goal for

the Chieftains, finishing with eight saves. “When you look at it, Holt really played well and made it difficult on us at times,” Okemos coach Brian Guggemos said. “A couple of things didn’t go our way, but I don’t think were hanging out heads after this game.” With the victory, Holt improves to 11-1-5 and 5-0 in the CAAC Blue. The Rams now control their own destiny and are in position to receive

the top seed heading into next week’s CAAC Cup. “We know that our hard work is paying off and we are starting to win some of those big games that we might have tied at the beginning of the year,” Smith said. “Now we see the momentum being in our favor and this team is really starting to believe in themselves a little more.”

Golfers win CAAC-Blue By SEAN MERRIMAN smerriman@lsj.com

HOLT — The Holt Rams girl’s golf team has had one of their best seasons in team history up to this point. With the season winding down and the state tournament approaching, Holt kept up its dominant pace with a first place showing at the Sept. 28 CAAC Blue tournament at Eldorado golf course. Mariah Massa shot a league-best 79 and Lauren Strong fired an 84, good for fourth place overall as the Rams rolled to a tournament victory. Holt finished with a final team score of 336; 12 points better then second place East Lansing. Okemos took third place with 371. Grand

Ledge and Jackson rounded out the field. Haley Bandt, Pader Her and Kari Sommerville all placed in the top-10 scorers at the league tournament. Casey Harkema rounded out the top six Holt golfers with a 94. The Rams appear to be playing their best golf at just the right time of year. The team has two more matches before the regional tournament begins the weekend of Oct. 8. Holt has won back-to-back regional titles the last two seasons and look to be poised for a good showing at this year’s state championships. If the Rams do qualify for the Division 1 state finals, they will take place on Oct. 15-15 at Eagle Crest Golf Course on the campus of Eastern Michigan University.
