Schools prep for new year

By WILL KANGAS wkangas@lsj.com

HOLT – As summer comes to a close, a new contract between Holt Public School’s teachers and administration has not been finalized. But negotiations remain positive, said Superintendent Johnny Scott on Aug. 26, 11 days before school starts. “We have some very positive momentum,” Scott said. “We are hoping to have a

Area District Library. Vagani said the summer party was faced with some cutbacks, but the staff made the most of it. “We gave the kids some prizes up front for the games, like the duck pond pull, instead of having them have to compete for them,” she said. “It worked out great.” Vagani said the best part was how the community contributed to the event.

HOLT — There were 427 people at the library’s end-of-summer bash on Aug. 19 And a few llamas. The animals were part of the fun, as kids of all ages were busy celebrating their accomplishments. The party marked the end of a summer of reading for many youths, who charted how much they read all summer and were rewarded with See Party/page 3 small prizes as they logged hours. “It was a great summer and the kids were really excited,” said Liz Right: Llamas joined the fun at Vagani, head of youth services for the Holt/Delhi Branch’s end-ofthe Holt/Delhi Branch of the Capital summer reading party Aug. 19.

tentative agreement really soon.” Once a tentative agreement is struck, the Holt Education Association members vote to ratify it. Scott said both sides were hoping to get the contract finalized by the time teachers reported, but there were a few road blocks. DDA saves Delhi cash By WILL KANGAS | wkangas@lsj.com DELHI TWP. – In an effort to save taxpayers money, two maturing township bond issues were re-funded recently. Downtown Development Authority Executive Director Al McFadyen said financial consultant Tom Traciak was examining DDA debt and found an opportunity. “He said the DDA could realize some significant savings if it re-funded two of its oldest debts,” McFadyen said. As a result, the DDA and Delhi Township Board of Trustees approved the refunding of two bond issues – from 1997 and 2001. The bonds were used for road and water infrastructural improvements, McFadyen said.

They were set to mature in 2016, and about $2.6 million is still owed on them. But Traciak said by refunding and using a lower 2.5 percentage interest rate, it will save $198,000 over time. “We’re thrilled,” McFadyen said. “We look forward to saving money as we pay off these debts.” At the DDA’s most recent board meeting on Aug. 24, the board approved a television advertising package with Fox 47, McFadyen said. “Through our marketing partners Blohm Creative we went with Fox 47,” he said. The advertising program offers discounted rates for local businesses to advertise during the holidays.

Party: Library bash was fun Delhi Township’s Parks and Recreation Department donated the use of Veterans Memorial Park for the event, and the township made sure there was a popcorn and sno-cone machine as well. “It was also very nice of the fire department to donate its time and equipment to the kids,” Vagani said. Games included a monkey toss, bean bag toss, and duck pond. Face painting was a hit as well, Vaganit said. “If we didn’t have great volunteers from the Friends of the Library we wouldn’t have been able to pull this off,” she said.

The summer reading program started when school was out, and encouraged kids to keep reading over the summer. The kids would track their reading and get rewards at each of four levels through the summer. Rewards included coupons to the Ingham County Fair and book bags for carrying books to and from the library. At the end of each level, a raffle ticket was placed in a container for the party, and included a gift card and other prizes, including a coveted stuffed penguin. “You can tell the community is proud of its kids and how they feel about the library,” Vagani said. “It was a great day to live in Holt.”

LANSING — Thomas M. Cooley Law School announced the promotion of 11 faculty members, effective Jan. 1, 2011. Cooley’s Board of Directors promoted seven faculty members from Associate Professor to Full Professor with Tenure: Assistant Dean and Associate Professor Christine Church, Assistant Dean and Associate Professor Dan Ray, Associate Professor Curt Benson, Associate Professor Cindy Faulkner, Associate Professor Anthony Flores, Associate Professor Norman Plate, and Associate Professor Paul Sorenson. Cooley’s Board promoted four faculty members from

Assistant Professor to Associate Professor: Assistant Professor Tammy Asher, Assistant Professor Stevie Barachkov, Assistant Professor Sherry Batzer, and Assistant Professor Monica Nuckolls. The promotions included representatives of all four of Cooley’s campuses: Professors Flores and Ray are assigned to the Ann Arbor campus; Professors Asher, Barachkov, and Nuckolls are assigned to the Auburn Hills campus; Professors Batzer, Benson, Faulkner, and Sorenson are assigned to the Grand Rapids campus; and Professors Church and Plate are assigned to the Lansing campus.

Before the Board of Directors acted, the process involved five steps, beginning each candidate assembling a dossier included evidence of their performance as faculty members. Under the leadership of Professor Maurice Munroe, each candidate received a favorable review by separate faculty committees to assure compliance with the school’s requirements regarding teaching, service, and scholarship. Next, each received a favorable review by the tenured faculty within the Faculty Conference, recommending their promotions to Associate Dean of Faculty Charles Cercone. Dean Cercone conducted a separate review and sub-

mitted a favorable recommendation to President and Dean Don LeDuc. Finally, Dean LeDuc recommended the promotions to the Board of Directors. Dean Cercone noted that each of the candidates exceeded the promotion requirements. “I’ve worked closely with each of them over the past several years, and I recommended these promotions because they are all dedicated teachers, diligent scholars, and leaders within the Cooley community.” President LeDuc added that all the candidates received unanimous support from the reviewing committees and overwhelming

The Holt/Dimondale Community Players is opening its fifth season with Lerner and Lowe’s classic musical, “Brigadoon.” “Brigadoon,” directed by Kirsten Gonzales, tells the story of a mysterious Scottish village that appears for only one day every 100 years, though to the villagers, the passing of each century seems no longer than one night. The enchantment is viewed by them as a blessing rather than a curse, for it saved the village from destruction. According to their covenant with God, no one

Lifelong learning is what the library offers HOLT – When you think of the library what comes to mind? Books? Computers? How about DVDs, magazines, audiobooks and music? All of these are part of what we offer, but the library is also your partner in lifelong learning. Where else can you find books on nearly every topic imaginable, access to computers for research, databases full of articles on a variety of topics, and educational and entertaining programs for all ages-all in one place? Lifelong learning begins with a solid foundation, and

the keystone of this foundation is the ability to read. The most effective way to ensure that a child will develop vital reading skills is to start at home, long before he or she picks up a backpack and heads off to school. That’s because the six skills of early literacy develop between the ages of one

and five. Although children develop these skills naturally, there are many simple ways to nurture them. For example, try these activities with your child: • Read aloud as much as possible. This is the first and most important way to encourage literacy growth. Experts recommend twenty minutes a day. They do not have to be consecutive minutes, so busy parents or children with short attention spans can still benefit. • When out in public together, point out words to your child, helping build

awareness that words are everywhere. • Play rhyming games together, so your child begins to understand the structure of words. • When reading a story, point out objects and ask your child to name them. • Use open-ended questions when reading a story, such as “What do you think will happen next?” Help encourage your child’s literacy success by incorporating these simple strategies into your daily routine. Locals win in archery tourney EAST LANSING — The Demmer Shooting Sports Education and Training Center hosted an X-Factor Archery Tournament and Open Shoot Aug. 14–15 in which 120 participants came to compete in adult and youth classes and to just shoot for fun. Participants had the opportunity to shoot at pop-up and running 3-D targets, which simulated bears, turkeys and deer, and to try many of the latest bows and crossbows. Door prizes, hot dogs, and mission-bow hats were given away throughout the two-day event, and a Polaris 800XP allterrain vehicle was raffled off. Fifteen adults and eight youth competed with each other to get the highest score and walk away with prizes. “It was a great time, fun for all!” said Demmer Center archery instructor Glen Bennett. “We definitely would like to do it again and expand our advertising to reach out to more of

the public. Hopefully we will do an indoor contest during the winter months.” In the youth class, Peter Brantley, 12, from Okemos, scored the highest with a 95, winning a gold medal and a new Morrell target. Ingham Academy lists grads ONONDAGA — Ingham Academy recently graduated 13 students, marking the most graduated students at one time in the school’s history. Opened in 2007, Ingham Academy was created by the Ingham County Circuit Court, Highfields and the Ingham Intermediate School District to help students who face challenges that interfere with graduating. The high school provides at-risk youth the life skills they need while earning a high school diploma. “The road to high school graduation isn’t the same for every student, and it isn’t always easy,” says Brian Philson, Highfields president/ CEO. “Ingham Academy is geared for youth who have struggled in school and have had contact with the juvenile justice and/or child welfare systems and who were otherwise headed down a road to nowhere.” Highfields provides behavior treatment and support for the program. Scott said the retreat was used for both the board and administration to get on the same page as the year begins. “Finances and the future dominated the discussion,” Board President John Malatinsky said. “Our goal is to have a contract in place by the time

school starts,” he said. Change will be felt all over the district this year. Grades 7-12 are starting a new six-period day this year, after the board approved the change from a five-period day last spring. Also, a rash of retirements means several new teachers and administrators will be starting their first year at Holt.

HOLT — The American Cancer Society, Great Lakes Division honored state Rep. Joan Bauer, a Holt graduate, with the Division’s Excalibur Legislative Advocacy Award. “Since taking the oath of office in 2007, Rep. Bauer has been a strong voice in the Legislature, advocating for legislative policies that help further the American Cancer Society’s mission of saving lives from cancer here in Michigan,” said Judy Stewart, director of state government relations for the American Cancer Society, Great Lakes Division, Inc. “Thanks in part to her tireless efforts, residents and workers throughout Michigan were able to celebrate a major victory in the fight against cancer when the state went smokefree on May 1. “She also recognizes the importance of nutrition and physical activity in the fight against cancer, as evidenced by her introduction of House Bill 4923. Smith expected to lead tough Rams defense By SEAN MERRIMAN

smerriman@lsj.com

It is a lasting image that continues to play over and over in his head. After a dramatic victory over defending state-champion Rockford, Mike Smith and the Holt Ram’s football team were one win away from reaching the 2009 state championship game at Ford Field. Holt had reached this point with a consistent offensive attack, and more notably, a tremendous defense led by Smith. The Rams were paired up against Novi Catholic Central, and having just beaten the predominant Division 1 favorite, they were riding a hot streak and looked to be on their way to their first state championship in school history. Then four quarters later and with zero points to show for it, the Rams season came to an unexpected end with a 31-0 loss to the Shamrocks. The state championship dream that carried Smith and his teammates to this point, was no longer. “It really was like a dream that was actually coming to life, and then I woke up before I was supposed to,” Smith recalls. “I think about how close we were all the time, and because we were just one game away, that makes it that much more difficult.” Holt coach Al Slamer likes to say that Smith has a specific aura to him that makes everyone around him want to be better on the football field. “He’s a complete player, a special player,” Slamer says of Smith. Entering his third season on

Holt’s varsity football team, Smith has become the main focus on what should be one of the top defenses in Mid-Michigan this fall. The 6-foot-2 220 lb. senior led the Rams in tackles last season while his defense gave up just 13 points per game. He played a key role in leading the Rams to an 11-2 record and a CAAC Blue league championship. This year, however, Smith has taken on a new mindset heading into his senior season. He worked with a sprint coach in the offseason to improve his speed and agility. He also competed on Holt’s power lifting team to help build upper body strength. “He has put in the time and the effort to be the best player that he possibly can be,” Slamer said. “He has put himself in the position to have a very successful senior season.” Smith explains, “Last year we had some good leaders on this team, guys that I have played with my whole high school career, and to end our season on that type of note, where we were so close, I was disappointed. “When you go through an experience like that, you learn from it and it has given me new insight to know what it takes to get to that next step. Now, I know that this is my senior year and it is on me to lead this group and realize what we have to do to take it one step farther.” Smith has become the fulcrum of not only the Ram’s defense but also of their locker-room. He helped lead team practices in the offseason when coaches were not allowed to participate in orga-

Mike Smith will defend the endzone this year for the Rams. nized practice sessions. He recently helped organize a team bowling activity in an effort to make sure players bond and unite with each other before the start of the regular season. “He has a certain leadership quality to him that can’t be taught,” Slamer said. “He has the respect of his teammates and he is always working hard to help players get better around him.” Smith is a physically gifted player out on the football field,

and the hugeness of his presence is now enhanced by the winning demeanor that he possesses. However, while you wouldn’t know it from his fierce competitive nature on the football field, Smith does carry a childish light side to him. He jokes with teammates and assistant coaches before the team gets ready to take off for their team-bowling event. “You’ve got to have fun with each other, be loose and make sure there is a feeling of comfort

with everyone,” Smith says. “But once it comes game time, that’s a whole different story. You better not be joking around once its game time!” Smith lets out a slight chuckle, which quickly transitions to a look of determination in his eyes. Now this is the look of the Ram’s top defensive player. It’s the look of a complete player, a special player.

FOURCAST [1] No reload necessary

Holt lost a ton of talent, including one of the area’s leading rushers and passers in quarterback Jordan Beachnau, an all-state receiver in Dominick Todd and three all-area defensive players. But the Rams still return five starters on offense and six on defense, including leading tackler and all-area linebacker Mike Smith and all-league honorable mention safety Jake Gallimore.

Four full-time and one part-time starter return to the defensive line — senior ends Justin Madar (6-4, 230) and Will Thurston (5-11, 190) and tackles Justin Jones (6-0, 205), Hunter Osborne (6-1, 210) and Tre Wilson (6-0, 265), whose father Bobby played at Michigan State and for the Washington Redskins.

[4 ] Who’s going to score?

[ 2 ] Line ’em up, Part I

Senior tackle Kenny Rogers (6-foot-6, 260 pounds) committed to Central Michigan and is joined among returning line starters with junior Ben Steward (6-7, 265), a potential star who played guard and center in 2009. Seniors Wes Dorin (6-0, 240), Max Godinez (5-10, 235) and junior Sawyer McFadden (6-3, 245) are among those who could step in and continue the program’s great blocking tradition.

Beachanu had a hand in 26 touchdowns last season. But senior running back Curtis Nick ran for more than 600 yards and five scores. And there are dangerous receiving options in senior Nick Thomas, who averaged 27 yards per catch in 2009, and senior Danny Middleton, the team’s third-leading receiver a year ago. And don’t forget about this somewhat still-secret weapon: junior kicker Evan Fischer. He’s one of the area’s best after making 34 of 36 extra points and 11 of 13 field goals as a sophomore.

1. Holt 2. East Lansing 3. Okemos 4. Grand Ledge 5. Jackson w Top league player: Mariah Massa, Holt w League outlook: East Lansing nipped Holt in the CAAC Blue last year but the Rams are the favorite this time around with one of the deepest teams in the area. Holt will be very dangerous if it can get solid play behind Massa, who may be the area’s top player for a second year in a row by season’s end. Look out for newcomers to step up in this league as well in freshmen Pader Her of Holt, Elle Nichols of Okemos and Alexis Mrozinski of Grand Ledge.

Holt’s Outlook

Blue w Coach: Doug Harkema, ninth season w Home course: Eldorado w Returning starters: Mariah Massa (sr.), Haley Bandt (sr.), Casey Harkema (jr.), Lauren Strong (jr.), Kari Somerville (jr.) w Other contributors: Pader Her (fr.) w Outlook: The Rams will be looking for their fifth league title in seven years and have won two straight regional championships. It’s a deep, experienced team with the lineup consisting of juniors and seniors. Along with last year’s LSJ Player of the year Mariah Massa, Bandt and Harkema are also all-area talents and incoming freshman Pader Her could help this Holt team contend for a state championship in 2010.

Cancer patients being sought for billboard project By DAWN PARKER dlparker@lsj.com

EAST LANSING — Rare is the person who uses their pain to help others. Photographer Terri Shaver, working out of her East Lansing studio, has done just that with the Oldham Project, which seeks to document women who are battling or who have survived breast cancer. Shaver’s objectives include enlisting enough sponsors to place photo billboards around town during October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Shaver said the Oldham Project Photograph by Terri Shaver was created following the loss of her Lansing resident Denise Acker, who died Aug. 13, was sister-in-law’s two sisters to breast cancer. one of the Oldham Project’s first photo subjects.

Her work with another non-profit that provides free portraits to the families of babies who have died, added to her love of portraiture in general, further helped inspire the Oldham Project. Shaver then connected with Susan G. Komen Mid-Michigan Affiliate executive director Chris Pearson, and that meeting proved instrumental. “She and I sat down Terri and started a conversation about Shaver how we might partner together, and she was 100 percent behind the Oldham Project, what we’re doing and what we provide for

the community,” Shaver recalled.

Continuing event?

Shaver initially considered carrying out the Oldham Project as a one-time event, but with 47 women now on board, she has a vision for something more lasting. She’s made some poignant photographs, including one of two sisters - one with breast cancer and one battling ovarian cancer. “Hopefully, this won’t just be a onetime thing. It will be an annual event that we do, and it will just get better each time,” she said. If Shaver is successful in establishing a long-term foundation for the Oldham Project, it will be

Can You Save for Retirement and College? As another school year approaches, you may be thinking about the day in which you’ll be sending your children off to college. Can you afford to help them pay for school while still saving for your own retirement?

THAN YOU DO FOR COLLEGE? Having fun with your family is important. But nothing is

There are many strategies to explore when saving for your retirement and your child’s education. To implement the right mix of options, it’s important to discuss your situation with a professional financial advisor, but here are some options to consider:

Contribute to your 401(k). Since many people don’t have unlimited funds available to save for retirement and college, it’s important to get the most mileage possible from the money invested. Try to utilize the tax-advantaged retirement accounts available to you. For starters, contribute as much as you can afford to your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan. Not only can your earnings grow on a tax-deferred basis, but your contributions are generally made with pretax dollars, so the more you contribute, the lower your annual taxable income — which, in turn, could give you more disposable income to invest for college. In 2010, you can contribute up to $16,500 to your 401(k), or $22,000 if you’re 50 or older.

Fund your IRA. Depending on your income level, your contributions to a traditional IRA may also lower your taxable income, again potentially freeing up resources for college. Plus, your earnings can grow tax deferred. If you qualify for a Roth IRA, your contributions are not taxdeductible, but your earnings grow tax free. Withdrawals are also tax-free, provided you’ve held your account at least five years and you don’t start taking withdrawals until you’re at least age 59½. Also, you can withdraw Roth IRA contributions without paying taxes (since you’ve already been taxed on this money), so you could use these funds, if necessary, to help pay for college costs, although ideally you’d like to leave your account untouched until you retire. If eligible, you can contribute up to $5,000 to your traditional or Roth IRA in 2010, or $6,000 if you’re 50 or older.

Open a 529 college savings plan. Contributions to a 529 plan are made with after-tax dollars. However, when you contribute to a 529 plan, your earnings grow tax free. Withdrawals are also tax-free, provided they are used for qualified higher education expenses. (Withdrawals for expenses other than qualified higher education expenditures may be subject to federal and state taxes plus a 10% penalty.) Furthermore, 529 plan contributions may be eligible for a state tax deduction or credit in certain states for residents who participate in their own state’s plan. Also, the lifetime contribution limits for 529 plans are quite generous, and you can gift $13,000 per year, per beneficiary, without incurring gift taxes. To make sure you understand the tax ramifications of a 529 plan, you’ll want to consult with your tax advisor. It may not be easy to put away as much as we’d like for retirement and college. But you do have some attractive savings and investment options. Don’t delay, because when saving for any goal, time is a great ally.
