The Grand Ledge-Waverly hockey team ended their 2010-11 season with the team’s annual awards banquet on March 6. The Comet-Warriors finished the season with a 17-7-3 record and a fourth-place finish in the Capital Area Activities Conference league standings. The team also won all three regular-season tournaments it played in this year, the Andy Hanichen Thanksgiving Classic, the Grand Ledge-Waverly Varsity Hockey Invitational, and the Tri-City Chiefs Invitational Tournament. GL-W head coach Brian Clifford said that he will look back on the year with some fondness. “The kids faced a lot of adversity this year, but came together as a group to have a successful season,” Clifford said. “It was an honor to coach such a bunch of hard working kids.” The Comet-Warriors played at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor in an outdoor game vs. New Boston Huron that ended in a 1-1 tie on Dec. 7, and then attended the MSU vs. U of M outdoor game as a team on Dec. 12. But it wasn’t all smooth going during the course of the year. The team lost four players in early January due to injury and were missing as many as seven by midJanuary, when the bulk of the CAAC league schedule is played.
