ERMC names board members EATON RAPIDS — Eaton Rapids Medical Center has announced that its board of directors has appointed Bob Damon, Leonard Peters and Jamie Davidson as new directors. The new directors bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the board, say hospital officials. Bob Damon is the treasurer for the City of Eaton Rapids. Leonard Peters is a retired partner from Ackley-Peters-Haubert Insurance Services and served as chairman of the Eaton County Board of Commissioners for 22 years. Jamie Davidson is a retired naval officer who also worked in col-

lege administration and served as mayor of Eaton Rapids from 2006 to 2009. Damon, Peters and Davidson are replacing John Vanator, Tim Daiss and Fritz Kellerman, who have served their term limits. Students attend Space Camp

CCAG of E.R. seeking donations for area families

Devon Fuller says, “I was one of the 13 Eaton Rapids Middle School seventh graders (now in eighth grade) that went to Space Camp. We all went to Huntsville, Ala. Space Camp was at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center. We did several simulators such as the MAT or Multi-Axis Trainer. This simulator spins you on three axes. We did a robotics course. In robotics, we designed, built, and programmed robots to go against each other in a competition. In another activity, we were all assigned positions as if we were going on a mission. We were assigned jobs in the Space Shuttle, Mission Control, or the International Space Station. Then, we went through a simulated mission in our positions, which I thought was one of the most fun things we did at Space Camp. We learned a lot about the space race and even our space program. I enjoyed the trip a lot and think if you have the chance to go to Space Camp, take it!” Festivities. Editor’s note: The Eaton Rapids Community News is rerunning the below article, which appeared in the Nov. 28th edition. The graph was not large enough to read. We apoligize for the oversight.

Alan Miller based on data from county Apportionment Report

Property tax rates vary widely across Eaton County, depending on municipality and school district, with the highest rate more than double the lowest. Many of the taxes are levied based on voter approved proposals to support higher levels of government services. mills, the lowest in Eaton County. A tax levy of one mill translates into one dollar of tax for each $1,000 of taxable value. Taxable value is normally set at one half of the market value of a property. Property taxes are levied by governments at all levels, for a variety of purposes.

County government, townships, villages and cities use property tax proceeds as their main source of operating revenue. Local school districts and community colleges use them for operating revenues, and for capital improvements. Intermediate school districts pay for special ed-

ucation and vocational education services from voter-approved property tax levies. The state levies 6 mills to help support the school aid fund, used to make payments to local school districts. Special authorities, such as the Delta District Library and the Grand Ledge Area

Emergency Services Authority have been authorized by voters to levy property tax levies. The City of Lansing has the highest municipal tax rate at 15.7 mills, but the highest general government taxes are levied in the Village of Vermontville, which charges 14.4 mills on top of the 3.6 mills levied by Ver-

montville Township. Residents of the small village in western Eaton County are spared from having the highest total taxes in the county only because their school taxes, for the Maple Valley Schools, are among the lowest. Maple Valley’s 8.9 mills are second only to the Lansing School District’s 8.0 mill levy.

December 5, 2010

EATON CO — Property tax rates, like almost everything else in real estate, vary with location, location, location. In Eaton County, the highest property tax rate is more than double the lowest. To a large extent, the differences reflect the level of government services, and many of the taxes were established by citizens voting to tax themselves. Opinions vary as to whether taxpayers get fair value for their taxes. “I think there are 8,000 opinions in the city, but most of the people I have worked with are pretty satisfied,” said Grand Ledge Mayor Kalmin Smith. “And people who are pretty well informed are aware of the extra services they receive, such as leaf pickup,” he said. “Many people are appreciative of that. These are things that add to the quality of life.” Grand Ledge residents pay the second lowest city tax rate in the county, but taxes levied by other jurisdictions add to their tax bills. The highest property taxes in Eaton County is in the part of the City of Lansing which is within the Holt School District, based on the combination of the highest city taxes in the area and the highest school taxes in the county. The owner of a hypothetical house with a market value of $150,000 located there would pay more than $4,500 on a tax levy of more than 60 mills. The owner of a similarly valued house in Kalamo Township, west of Charlotte, and in the Maple Valley School District would pay approximately $2,000 on a combined tax levy of 27

Auction event is successful We knew that the night would have some mystery and magic when we saw the way the English Inn was decorated. Colleen Shoup’s Greyhound Intermediate art students made the masks that were the centerpieces at the annual Eaton Rapids Education Foundation auction. The night was just a lot of fun for over 150 people who attended the event on Nov. 13. Foundation members hosted an amazing evening. You will know at least of one of these people: Scott Boles (president), Gary Wichman (vice president), Rhonda Earley (secretary) and Kristy Acker (treasurer). Directors for the foundation are: Renae Davidson, Joy Matthews, Charles Nicholson, Chick Fox, Judy Nixon, Kelly Pekrul, Theresa Platte, Julie Powers, David Price, Julie Reinecke,

Paw prints Bill DeFrance

Leanne Richard, Stacy Surato and April Trudgeon. These people on the education foundation raised over $33,000 through items that were donated for a silent and live auction. Rick Acker’s brother, Scott, was the auctioneer, and media favorite, Dave Ackerly, was the host. There were over 90 businesses, individuals, and families who made donations. This was a tremendous outpouring of generosity. Thanks to business sponsorships, the Education Foundation was able to meet that goal. The sponsors were:

• Bronze Sponsors: Aireconomics Inc., Eaton Federal Savings Bank, Edward Jones, Family Fare, Granger Construction Company, Independent Bank, Kingscott & Associates, Kolt Communications Inc., Meridian MagnesiumProducts of America, Skinner Funeral Home, and VFW Home for Children. • Gold Sponsors: Ackley-Peters-Haubert Insurance, PNC Bank, Ross & Associates, Summit Contractors. • Platinum Sponsor: Paul and Marta DiMeglio of Tetra Corporation I know that you are dying to know what we got. I was a successful bidder for two homemade holiday pies! My wife, Nancy, was the lucky one to bid for dinner and two tickets to a show at Wharton Center. For the last few years, the Education Foundation has brought a lot of joy to students and teachers in the school system. When we struggle to continue funding programs, the Education Foundation provided teacher grants and resources to move instructional programs to a new level. Thanks to evenings like these, they have provided teachers with science kits for all of our elementary grades so kids can learn by seeing, touching, and doing. Eaton Rapids Public Schools really appreciates those who attended, those who bought items, and those who donated and made gifts as this year’s event was a stunning success.

‘Tis the time for charity

Thanksgiving and Christmas are the most “giving” times of the year. Most of us receive countless pieces of mail requesting donations. There is a seemingly unending request from every charity. There is a tendency for us to discard large numbers of these requests, and yet, the needs are so overwhelming, that to do so would give any conscientious person a sense of neglect and guilt. Each of us has a favorite charity, and sometimes more than one. If we pause to think about it, our involvement is strategic to the maintenance of the American way

It is amazing to see multi-billionaires, such as Warren Buffett and Bill Gates, turn their fortunes into foundations that can influence and modify the lives of millions of people. It is wonderful that they are able to do this, but it is the local businesses and the citizenry across America who still feed the poor, house the homeless, and

sustain supporting charities in every town and community. We are a nation which has built its sovereignty on the premise that we care for each other in every possible way. One of the greatest assets we can pass on to our children is the understanding that none of us stands alone. Our interdependence is the key to so much of our strength. As we move into the holiday season, we have an opportunity to once again demonstrate our charity and concern for each other. At a time when we, as a nation, are threatened on

numerous fronts, we are challenged more than perhaps ever before. It is the ability we have to care for each other, that causes us to lift up not only our neighbors, but those who are in great need, and have huge obstacles to overcome. It is the utilization of our personal assets that encourages us to reach out and help those who are in need. For more information on building assets, visit the Web site: http:// www.ercommunityassets.org or call Mike Williams, (517) 663-1081 or Mary Payne, (517) 667-6170.

EATON RAPIDS - Charlotte senior Maizie Kineman, swimming for the combined Eaton Rapids-Charlotte swim team, earned Michigan Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association Second-Team honors. Kineman swam in the 50 and 100 freestyle individual events and was part of the Greyhound relay teams. Her best time of 56.70 in the 100 freestyle placed her eighth among all CAAC swimmers. She was ninth in the 50 freestyle with a best time of 25.74. Ironically, both of her times would have qualified Kineman for the Division 3 state meet where teams from the CAAC Gold/White division schools compete. But because of the combined enrollments of Eaton Rapids and Charlotte, Kineman had to qualify under the faster Division 1 times.
