CCAG spreads cheer in Eaton Rapids

Outreach effort has assistance from many community groups By MARY JO WHITE

mjwhite@lsj.com

EATON RAPIDS - Those busy elves at the Community Christian Action Group are at it again, planning for this holiday season’s food and gift outreach effort to local families in Eaton Rapids. These dedicated folks are enthusiastic, even after 37 years of generosity, and determined to help those bearing the brunt of Michigan’s sluggish economy and high unemployment rate. Ask what motivates them, and there’s a moment of silence, then an answer from CCAG secretary Dianne Clone. “That’s just what Christmas is all about,” Clone said. “We help put the ‘Merry’ into Christmas for everybody.”

Giving hearts

At Wesleyan Church on Saturday morning , Dec. 18, thanks to the group’s hard work, each family that applied will receive a box of food as well as gifts for children who are under 18. This year CCAG will serve 113 families, which means at least 400 people, according to Clone. A project of this scope means lots and lots of work and the generosity of lots and lots of people, so CCAG planners from various churches were busy at the First Congregational Church on Main Street Dec. 2 spearheading what is a true community effort. Every little bit helps. The St. Vincent dePaul Society

For over 30 years, the group has spearheaded an effort to provide food boxes and gifts to families in need. Front l to r: Kerin Harding, Janette Hayes, Dianne Clone, Nadien Conarton. The Lions Club always donates 10 boxes of oranges and nearby orchards often provide apples. There are donation boxes on the counters of many local businesses and “Giving Trees” at

several churches. Teachers from Greyhound Intermediate School and Eaton Rapids Middle and High schools provide food and gifts and alternative high school students spend time packing boxes for families of different sizes, anywhere from one to 10 people.

Both the Eaton Rapids and Hamlin Township Fire Departments get into the act, too, delivering some of the gifts on Christmas Eve in their fire trucks. It would be impossible to list everyone who helps spread the CCAG holiday cheer, but maybe that’s okay because

they’re repaid with the spirit of Christmas. CCAG past president Pat Slentz says working with families is “heartwarming.” “Some people say their kids wouldn’t have had a Christmas without us,” Slentz said. “There’s a real need out there.”

HAZMAT team meets with local students EATON RAPIDS — Eaton Rapids Middle School (ERMS) seventh grade science classes start the year learning proper safety procedures to use in the classroom. The students are given the following scenario: What do I do if I find an unlabeled and unidentifiable substance? First, the students learn about HAZMAT (hazardous material) teams and how they conduct a variety of tests to identify the unknown substances. Then, the students are given a mixture of unknown substances. The students design a plan for separating the var-

ious parts of the mixture, they follow their plans, and, then, they use a variety of tests to identify each part of the mixture. To conclude the unit, Captain Brad Wilbur and several volunteers from the Eaton County HAZMAT team recently spent the day at ERMS explaining and demonstrating their jobs. Student volunteers were given the opportunity to “decontaminate” two of the HAZMAT team members after they examined a potentially hazardous container (clean and empty for the presentation). Students hosed off and scrubbed down the adults returning from the “spill

site.” Then, other students helped the HAZMAT team members remove their “contaminated” protective suits, boots, gloves, and masks. ERMS students enjoyed seeing the adults and student volunteers in action. Also, they enjoyed examining the various equipment used by the professionals. ERMS is very grateful for the HAZMAT volunteers who shared their day with the seventh graders, enriching and completing the science unit.

Diana Lambkin Meyer, a Kansas City writer, really impressed me when she observed that “Children grow up, cities change, but traditions ground us to our past, to each other, to the real meaning of the holidays. And the moments we spend with the people we love, are the greatest gift of all.” What an astute observation. Every day provides us with a chance to make a difference in someone’s life — whether it is for our own children, family, friends, or simply someone in our community. We only have one life,

Community Asset Building Jan McRee

and each of us has something we can give to our town of Eaton Rapids, especially to those who have great needs this time of year. We are the models for our future. Our young people become what they see in us, as parents, teachers, and citizens. We truly need to ask our-

selves what we can do this Christmas season that could help someone else. What is this season really about? It is truly about building assets in every way we can for our community and its citizens. Quietly think about and review the assets we have in Eaton Rapids. As we drive through main street at night, the beautiful decorations draw our attention, and make us proud to live in this small and friendly town. We have a fine hospital, excellent schools, beautiful churches, and very special stores and businesses.

But, let us not forget, that we, as citizens, are the ones who truly make our town inviting to others. Each of us can and must play a part in building assets for Eaton Rapids. These are good times during this holiday season, to

build assets for others in every way we can. We can truly make a difference by making donations to the food bank, and giving clothing to the needy, or simply reaching out to others who are alone, and without family. Let us be asset builders.

For further information, visit the asset Web site: http:// www.ercommunityassets.org or call Mike Williams, (517) 663-1081 or Mary Payne, (517) 667-6170. Jan McRee is a resident of Eaton Rapids.

Hound boys wreck Ramblers in season opener BILL McLEOD bmcleod@lsj.com

PERRY - Senior point guard Travis Wells scored 29 points to lead Eaton Rapids to a 62-59 overtime win over nonleague Perry in the season opener for both teams. Wells hit three of his five three-point shots in the fourth quarter. “I was just taking the shots and doing whatever we needed to do to get the win,” Wells, a three-year starter said. “It was huge to get started off on the right note, now we have momentum for our first league game Friday (against Charlotte).” It was the first win for new coach Luke Brown. Brown was an assistant coach at MSU and Cleveland State University for several years, but was out of basket-

ball for the past four years before returning to Eaton Rapids to accept the coaching position. “This was my first win as a head coach at any level,” Brown said. “It feels great, I wish we were at home so I could take the (game) ball home with me, but it’s not ours. We’ve been working hard and the kids deserve it.” The Greyhounds fell behind by seven points late in the first quarter before going on an 11-3 run to take a three-point lead at half time. Ta’ron Gentry jump started the Greyhounds on the run, hitting a two-point shot and then making a free throw to open the second quarter. Wells, with an assist from Gentry, gave the Greyhounds their first lead of the game at 6:13 in the

second quarter. Wells next added a threepointer the hard way, driving to the basket for a layup, drawing a foul and making the free throw. Eaton Rapids senior Derek Morris stole a Rambler dribble and drove the court to put the Greyhounds up 22-19 midway through the second quarter. Eaton Rapids continued to pull away on a long twopointer by Wells and a six-foot jumper by Lorenzo Morales. But Perry battled back, cutting the Greyhound lead to 27-30 at half time. Eaton Rapids shooters went cold in the third quarter, scoring only four points. The Ramblers took a 36-34 lead to end the third quarter. Wells hit three threepointers in the fourth quarter to keep the Ramblers in

check. Curtis Wells, one of the three Wells brothers on the team, hit a three-pointer to put Eaton Rapids up 43-42 midway through the fourth quarter. A steal and layup by Gentry and a long twopointer by Travis Wells gave the Greyhounds a 54-52 lead with 1:20 left in regulation. Perry’s Jake Baumgartner tied the score at 54-all when he grabbed a rebound and scored to send the game into overtime.

Overtime

Eaton Rapids took a three-point lead in overtime when Sam Delamarter grabbed a loose ball and scored, drawing a foul and making the free throw. Gentry made a free throw to put Eaton Rapids up by four points. Perry cut the Greyhound lead to 60-59 on a

three-pointer by Eric Bickerstaff with less than five seconds left. Craig Wells, the third Wells brother and twin to Curtis, hit a pair of free throws to seal the win for Eaton Rapids. “In the end, when we needed free throws, I am able to put the three Wells brothers in and I know I have 85 percent shooting group right there,” Brown said. “It was a good game, just a tough loss,” Rambler coach Mike Shauver said. “We didn’t make the key plays when we needed to and number 4 (Travis Wells) did for them.” Gentry scored eight points. Morris had seven. Jacob Masteller scored five points. Morales had five points.

w Coaches prediction: 1. DeWitt, 2. Haslett, 3. Eaton Rapids, 4. Ionia, 5. Charlotte, 6. Fowlerville w Top player: Dena Droste, DeWitt w League outlook: Last season’s co-champ and annual favorite DeWitt is expected to win again, although Haslett is expected to make a push. Both are small, athletic teams dominated by standout guards. The rest of the league could be up for grabs as most are working to replace key veterans who graduated in the spring.

EATON RAPIDS

w Last season: 16-5, tied for first w Coach: Willis Whitmyer, 12th season w Returning starters: Kaylee Heinz (5-11 C) jr., LeighAnn Thilo (5-6 G) jr. wOther contributor: Erin Binkowski (5-10 F/C) soph. w Outlook: The Greyhounds are more inexperienced than in a long while, but it will come quickly with six underclassmen expected to get major minutes. Thilo is out for the season with an injury after both she and Heinz were all-league honorable mentions last season. But Binkowski was impressive as a freshman and should carry a bigger load.

BOYS WRESTLING CAAC Gold

Coaches’ prediction: 1. Fowlerville, 2. DeWitt, 3. Charlotte, 4. Eaton Rapids, 5. Haslett, 6. Ionia. League outlook: Fowlerville, featuring state champion Adam Coon, will be the team to beat in the Gold. DeWitt and Charlotte should improve from last season and contend for a top-three finish. Charlotte’s Josh Zaluga is one of the league’s best. Top wrestler: Adam Coon, Fowlerville EATON RAPIDS

BOYS BASKETBALL

CAAC Gold

Coaches predictions: 1. Haslett, 2. DeWitt, 3. Charlotte, 4. Fowlerville, 5. Ionia, 6. Eaton Rapids. Top player: Jordan Johnson, DeWitt League outlook: No area conference race appears as wide open as this one. Including honorable mentions, only four of 21 all-league honorees are back from last year. DeWitt, Haslett and Fowlerville are often the dominating forces from the Gold, but this could be the season Charlotte contends for its first league title since 1993. EATON RAPIDS

w Last season: 13-9, tied for second w Coach: Luke Brown, first season w Returning starters: Travis Wells (6-0 G) sr., Derek Morris (6-0 G) sr. w Other contributors: Jacob Masteller (6-1 G) jr., Sam Delamater (6-1 G) jr., Ta’Ron Gentry (6-0 G) soph., Kyle Price (6-1 G) sr. w Outlook: The Greyhounds will be keyed by an experienced backcourt, with Wells running the point. That’s quite a

change from the past few seasons of 6-8 Alex Gauna and 6-4 Alex Archambeau, each of whom earned all-state recognition as seniors last winter. But Brown inherits an athletic group that should keep the recent success going.

GIRLS BOWLING CAAC Gold/White

Heather Delong, the lone senior, has qualified for states twice as an individual.

w Last season: second w Coach: Scott Warriner, 21st season w Returning starters: Phil Stewart (112) soph.; James McCormick (140) sr.; Nick Yerden (145) sr.; Austin Hogarth (152) soph.; Jacob Epling (160) jr.; Justin Bray (171) jr.; Jason Kibiloski (285) sr.; Davey Griffith 160) jr. w Other contributors: Blake Marsh (171) sr.; Trent Hurd (189) soph.; Zach Lange (130) soph.; Ryan Thomas (285) soph. w Outlook: The Greyhounds have some rebuilding to do, but Stewart and Hogarth each finished second in the league last year as freshmen. Look for the Greyhounds to improve throughout the season. Warriner is closing in on his 500th career victory.

Top diver: Chris McLauchlan, Haslett Outlook: This could be the most talent the CAAC Gold/White has had in a number of years. Haslett is the favorite but both DeWitt and Williamston have a talented core of seniors who will be looked on to challenge the Vikings.

Area students invited to center

CHARLOTTE — Are you a sophomore or junior in high school thinking about what you will do when you graduate in a year or two? Have you considered technical fields that offer a variety of career opportunities? If your answer to any of these questions is “Yes,” on Tuesday, Dec. 14, you may want to be one of more than 1200 students from the tri-county area who will visit Eaton Intermediate School District (ISD) Career Preparation Center located at Lansing Community College (LCC) West Campus. For the upcoming 2011-2012 school year, Eaton ISD Career Preparation Center is offering 24 different career and technical education programs. Students from all of the Clinton, Eaton and Ingham area high schools (including Lansing Public Schools) and Lakewood and Laingsburg high schools can access these programs. (Ingham County schools are only able to access those programs not available at their local career center.) The first step to enrollment is signing up with your high school counselor to attend the Visitation Day on Dec. 14. At visitation, students come to LCC West Campus to meet instructors and listen to Eaton ISD staff share program expectations. This past year, 1200+ students visited and 450 eventually enrolled to take advantage of the wonderful opportunity provided through the EISD/LCC partnership. In talking with current students, these are some of the positive experiences they relate: “The college experience is important. These classes get you ready; they don’t hold your hand.” “The hands-on experiences and interactive presentations make learning fun.” “Great opportunity to meet students and make friends from all over.” “Programs help you start your career while still in high school.” In 2009-2010, in addition to earning high school credit, 458 students earned 2,788 college credits. Programs available at EISD Career Prep Center cover all of the career pathways. Students and families may go to the Eaton ISD Web site at www.eatonisd.org to see a video and a written description of each of the following programs.
