I-96 ramp shut Jingle Belle biggest ever Saturday for fix By MARY JO WHITE mjwhite@lsj.com

By DEREK MELOT dmelot@lsj.com

DELTA TWP. -The ramp from westbound I-96 to eastbound I-496 was to be closed with a detour posted on Saturday, Dec. 18 after a fiery truck accident that killed two people damaged the bridge last Tuesday. The ramp was expected to be closed from approximately 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., weather permitting. The closure was needed so crews can install temporary support at the Mt. Hope Road overpass that was damaged in an fatal truck accident. Once the temporary support and barrier wall are installed, Mt. Hope Road over I-96 will reopen. Crews will be back in

the spring of 2011 to make permanent repairs to the bridge. A husband and wife from Arkansas were killed early Tuesday, Dec. 14 when a semitruck struck the Mt. Hope Highway bridge over Interstate 96 in Delta Township, the Eaton County Sheriff’s Department said. The accident occurred at 5:06 a.m., with the truck bursting into flames, forcing the halt of the interstate’s westbound traffic for about eight hours. The Sheriff’s Department said Calvin and Brenda Roberts, who were inside the truck, were killed in the crash. Calvin Roberts, 58, and Brenda Roberts, 54, were See Crash/page 4

DELTA TWP. - You couldn’t miss the Team Playmakers contingent at the third annual Jingle Belle Race for women at the Delta Township District Library Dec. 11. These were the people aged 50 and older in the bright red jackets, all 342 of them, who showed up with their own cheerleader coaches dressed in funny costumes. Coach Sally Long of East Lansing was decked out in a red-and-white polka dot number and red sunglasses. “Don’t take a picture of us, “ said fellow coach Ann Crane of Haslett, who appeared dressed for an appearance in some bizarre “Nutcracker” with her pouffy red ballerina skirt. “Take pictures of the runners.” The duo were too good to pass up, though, especially when Crane started clanging her big cowbell to support the team. There were lots of antlers and Santa hats, red shorts with white tights and all kinds of holiday socks. This Jingle Belle event just keeps getting bigger and bigger. “It goes up about 200

Stimulus “Last Chance” “Economic Stimulus” money for your own pocket… Act quickly, and you can receive a $1,500 gift from the government for the most comfortable and efficient heating & cooling system you’ve probably ever seen. I know. We hear all these “claims” about some superfantastic Government program that’s supposed to help normal, hard-working people living on “Main Street, USA.” But it always seems to end up in somebody else’s pocket, right? Well, not this time… if you act quickly. Among the billions of dollars the Government spread across our country in efforts to stimulate our economy, there’s something for your very own home and your very own pocket. It’s about your energy bills. Yes, I mean your energy bills for heating and cooling your home. Are you aware that in the Lansing area your heating and air conditioning system is responsible for an average of 43% of your monthly utility bill? Meanwhile, the cost of energy continues to skyrocket. What is the solution? Where does it end? Right here, right now, and here’s why: The government tripled the Federal tax credits through the end of 2010 to homeowners who are willing to help conserve energy.

What’s happened is, through the end of this year – in the government’s best offer ever – you can get a 30% tax credit of up to $1,500 for the purchase of highly efficient air conditioners, heat pumps or furnaces. So invest a moment now and call 517-627-4822 to schedule a time for your Free Home Energy Evaluation. We will provide you with all the details regarding system benefits, reduced cost of ownership, utility savings, the new tax credits and your projected return on investments. esting stories. Take Karin Dewley of Portland, for instance, who works for Auto Owners in Delta Township and placed second in the 50-54 age group. She and her sister, Krist Ziemer of Eaton Rapids, both of whom graduated from Waverly High School, started running in last year’s Jingle Belle, after a lot of persuasion on Dewley’s part. Now they’ve completed a half-marathon and are looking forward to a marathon. “Kris always took pictures of her sons, Brad, Matt and Dan, running,” Dewley said. “Now they’re taking pictures of us.” Matt and Dan are both Western Michigan University students, so they’re

not home much these days. But Kris says she’s looking forward to running more races with Brad, a Lansing Community College student, once he fully recovers from a stress fracture. The days are over, though, when she’s able to see Brad win a race. “Now that we both run, I don’t get to watch him finish,” she said, “because

he usually comes in somewhere in the top five.” Hamrick wasn’t the only librarian at the Jingle Belle. In fact, librarians Becky Leboeuf, who works at the Delta library, and Sara Wedell, who used to work there but is now with the Chelsea library, walked the course together. Several women said

they appreciate the library’s hospitality, with plenty of room to stretch and hot chocolate, coffee, popcorn and cookies after the race. Others said they like the festive atmosphere that doesn’t force people beyond what they can comfortably do. “It’s inspiring without (my) feeling I have to com-

pete at (a certain) level,” said Chris Walker of Grand Ledge. Speaking of levels - at least one of the walkers had never seen a D-tag before and thought it was a wristband. (A D-tag is a device you tie on your shoe laces that registers your starting and finishing times See Jingle/page 7

SIREN issues invite to dinner A core group of volunteers then does the cooking and clean-up. Some of the regular patrons often stay to sweep and mop the floors and wipe the tables, often joined by people with community service hours. Due to the economic downturn, the Community Dinners have seen a drop in the number of groups stepping forward to help with the meals, while the number of hungry coming in has increased. Over the years it has become a place where anyone, regardless of income, can come get a hot meal. For many it is the only hot meal they will get all week. Many of the people who come here have some kind of disability that keeps them from earning an income sufficient to pay for all their other needs. This dinner is a way to supplement that income, as well as to spend time in fellowship with friends. In the beginning several women (which we call the core group) generally did the shopping, cooking, serving and cleaning up.Over the years, some of them have passed on or moved away.

CHARLOTTE - For the past 19 years, the Charlotte Community Dinner has served a hot meal, friendly faces, and fellowship to hundreds of people in the community. This year Charlotte Church of Christ will be hosting the Christmas week Community Dinner on Dec. 22 from 4:30-5:30 p.m. The Community Dinners began in 1992, and was originally thought of as a soup kitchen for the needy. When it was realized that some senior citizens, people with disabilities, and young families needed more than a bowl of soup to help them get through the week, it became a dinner. The Eagles Lodge generously donates their facility each Wednesday to make the Community Dinner a success. The dinners are sponsored by churches, clubs, businesses, and individuals in the Charlotte area. There are several ways to get involved in the Community Dinner. One interested group may come in to cook and serve the meal. Others might make monetary donations only.

Toy store 50 years young By MARY JO WHITE mjwhite@lsj.com

LANSING TWP. - Eightyyear-old Betty Gillison has something for everyone in her well-stocked Toy Village, 3105 W. Saginaw, originally a centennial farmhouse, from the serious doll collector to the 5-year-old who has only a dollar to spend. The company is now celebrating 50 years in business. And during that past half century Gillison has made sure that everything she sells is a solid, wellmade, classic “something.” You won’t find Barbie and Ken or anything Disney. There are no teenage Bratz dolls with their eyeshadow and lip gloss. “We carry things proven through the years that children love,”Gillison said. “We look for high quality, safe toys that have been proven child-worthy.” Toy Village overflows with sturdy wooden blocks, time-tested Playmobile items, dolls made of everything from felt and porcelain to wood and wax.

There’s a whole room with stacking rings and other safe items for the very young. Once a farmhouse bedroom, it still has its original wood floor. The farmhouse kitchen is stuffed animal central, sporting everything from ferrets and seal pups to penguins, dinosaurs and a very large pheasant with bright plumage. There’s a huge section devoted to board games, too, something Brigitte Todd, who only recently discovered Toy Village and was browsing last week, said she really appreciates because her family enjoys playing them together. Todd’s daughter, Faith, 9, was more interested in playing with a set of wooden ramps for racing cars.

Welcoming children to play, in fact, is another customer draw. Pam McJilton comes from Fowlerville to pick out toys for her grandchildren, sometimes bringing along her 5-year-old grandson who loves Thomas the Tank Engine. “They’re tolerant of kids playing here,” McJilton said. “Everything lasts forever. They don’t sell junk.” Gillison and her first husband, Howard Slagh, an accountant at Fisher Body, bought the farmhouse in 1962, putting an addition on two years later. They lived upstairs, and their two children, John and Cindy, worked the counter after school. Six years after Slagh’s

death from cancer in 1972, Gillison married Dow Gillison, a former district manager with Massey Ferguson, who used to joke that he went from dealing in iron to dealing in porcelain. Dow Gillison died in 1995 and John Slagh began managing Toy Village. Gillison remembers children from Windemere Park Elementary, now a charter school, walking the pedestrian overpass, now gone, to buy penny candy at her store. Now she sees those children’s children. “What we have is second and third generation,” she said. “Parents say they want to show their kids where they came as kids.” Gillison really has a soft spot in her heart for the dolls. The collectibles come

most expensive doll, Garrison said she once carried a limited edition doll from England called Mirabelle who was looking at another doll in a window. Mirabelle retailed for $7,000 and Gillison wound up selling four. “If I like it,” she said, “I can usually sell it.” Another favorite is the matryoshka nesting dolls from Russia, of which Gillison stocks plenty. Phyllis Whipple of DeWitt Township, for instance, has worked at Toy Village for almost 20 years and has no plans to retire. “I just enjoy it,” she said. “It keeps your mind busy and active.” Plus it’s a great place to find gifts for her 11 great-grandchildren.
