GOP sweeps Clinton Co. seats 52 percent of county voters cast ballots in election By TOM THELEN

tthelen@lsj.com

DeWITT — A national trend of voters favoring Republican Party candidates in the Nov. 2 election was also seen locally. Republican candidates won races in for local seats in the Michigan Senate and House of Representatives. Also, GOP candidates won all three contested seats on the Clinton County Board of Commissioners. In District 4, Republican incumbent Jack Enderle defeated Democratic challenger George Vernon with Enderle receiving 67 percent of the votes, according to unofficial results posted by the Clinton County Clerk’s office. The District 6 seat will change hands after Republican challenger Jamie Clover Adams received more votes than Democratic incumbent Eileen Heideman. Adams received 55 percent of the votes cast. In District 7, Republican incumbent Adam Stacey retained his seat after a challenge from Democratic candidate Marie Howe. Stacey received 59 percent of the votes. In the state legislative races, Republican incumbent Paul Opsommer easily withstood a challenge from Democrat Travis Lacelle to represent the 93rd District. Opsom-

mer received over 70 percent of the votes cast in Clinton County and overall. In the 85th District, which includes Bath and Victor townships, Republican Ben Glardon was selected over Democrat Pamela Drake. Glardon received 57 percent of the votes cast in Clinton County and 67 percent of the total votes cast in the race. In the race for the 33rd District seat in the Michigan Senate, Republican Judy Emmons received 64 percent of the overall votes cast to earn the seat over Democrat James Hoisington and Libertarian Joshua Lillie. In other statewide races, area voters also selected Rick Snyder and Brian Calley for governor and lieutenant governor, Ruth Johnson for secretary of state, and Bill Schuette for attorney general. Mike Rogers also received a majority of the local votes in the race to represent the 8th District in the U.S. House of Representatives. One local ballot proposal was also decided. A proposal to revise the DeWitt City Charter was defeated by a 2-to-1 margin. The current city charter requires that the question be placed before voters every 16 years. Michigan Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land estimated total voter turnout in the state at approximately 45 percent. The turnout for Clinton County was approximately 52 percent. Locally, voter turnout average approximately 50 percent. Precinct 2 in the City of DeWitt had a voter turnout of 61.9 percent, which was the second highest in the county. Westphalia Township had the highest county turnout at 63.7 percent.

DeWitt royalty Luke Pabst and Betsie Hundt were crowned as the 2010 DeWitt High School homecoming king and queen during the halftime of DeWitt’s Oct. 8 home football game.

ST. JOHNS — Dozens of local government officials who gathered in a conference room in St. Johns to talk about cooperation agreed on one thing: There are plenty of ways they could benefit by pooling resources and working across jurisdictional boundaries.

But how far it will all go remains to be seen. About three dozen elected officials from around the county attended the county’s first-ever regionalism summit at the Clinton County RESA Conference Center on Oct. 28. “I’d say there was a good crosssection of jurisdictions there,” said Troy Feltman, the superintendent in Bath Township. “Geographically, they

represented pretty much the whole county.” The meeting was hosted by Bath and DeWitt townships and the city of St. Johns. Officials from those three communities will survey the participants to further define what areas are ripe for collaboration. “We’ll ask some probing questions, See Meeting/page 3

Feltman said the survey should help define areas where there is interest for collaborating so that communities with the same needs or interests can work together. “I think we need to find something relatively easy to tackle,” he said. “There may be some low-hanging fruit out there that we could easily take on. It’s a process of building relationships.” DeWitt Township Manager Rod Taylor said Clinton County has been a leader in inter-governmental cooperation. The summit is another example of how elected offiials are willing to work together. “We’re trying to keep the momentum and find those areas where opportunities exist,” he said.

CCEA names new president/CEO ST. JOHNS — The Clinton County Economic Alliance (CCEA) announces the selection of Brian Coughlin to be the next president and CEO of the organization. Coughlin will replace John Czarnecki, who is retiring at the end of this year after leading the CCEA for the last three years. Coughlin will start his new position on Jan. 3, 2011. “As our first CEO, John has done a great job of establishing the CCEA and ensuring its success in the years to come,” said Chris Thelen, chair of the CCEA executive board. “We think Bri-

Prior to that, he was the director of economic development for Butler County, Ohio. During his time there, 12,000 new jobs were created and $3 billion of investment was made in the county. “I am very pleased to have been

The officer tried to make contact with the man after clearing the traffic stop, but the man ran inside the building. Someone continued to yell taunts at the officer from an upper-floor balcony before he and another officer went upstairs and questioned people inside an apartment. The suspect in the Halloween shirt was cited for being a minor in possession of alcohol and furnishing false information to police and was turned over to Ingham County on an outstanding arrest warrant. An 18-year-old Okemos woman was ticketed for being a minor in possession of alcohol.

Election shows the changing tide in Michigan “There is a tide in the affairs of men, “Which, taken at the flood, leads on to fortune … “On such a full sea are we now afloat, “And we must take the current when it serves, “Or lose our ventures.” William Shakespeare, Julius Caesar *** The bard nailed it. Nothing is ever certain. Failure is always possible. But to hang back from seizing the opportunity when the tide is flowing would be the worst possible thing. To me, that’s the message of this Michigan election. It was not about angry voters sending a rebuke to Washington. Or attack ads about sending jobs to China. Or a snarling, narcissistic partisanship that boasts that it will never compromise…ever. This election was about Michigan and Michigan’s future. In an important sense, it was a referendum on the last decade, when our politics were broken and our policies stuck in gridlock while our state suffered the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression. Rick Snyder’s big win sets up the possibility that those damaged days might be coming to an end and that we may be entering into a time of sane reform and progress. From the very beginning of his campaign, Snyder had a clear understanding of the working majority he wanted to assemble: Republicans, to be sure, but common-sense Main Street variety, not hard right-wingers. He wanted to include independents, the largest political group in Michigan, who have grown increasingly uncomfortable and frustrated by a hyper-partisan political culture that doesn’t get anything done. Plus even moderate Democrats, who bailed out on Andy Dillon in the primary, couldn’t stomach the idea of the other GOP contenders, and hoped that Rick Snyder might be able to be broad consensus, Bill Milliken-style governor. So our big hope for a Snyder Administration is that it will call forth a constellation of the capable, a coalition inter-

ested in reforming the residue of the past in order to make a transformed Michigan of the future. Maybe we won’t have politics as usual. Phil Power And maybe, just maybe, the voters will have spoken loudly enough that the politicians will realize that old style, rigid partisan games are simply not acceptable for a state in the fix we’re in. None of this will be easy. Our state is in a real mess. The new governor will have just 65 days after he takes office to propose a General Fund budget that is estimated to be at least $1.6 billion in the red. Nor can he appoint a vast cadre of like-minded people: There are only 136 unclassified “political” appointments a new governor can make, and only a little over half can be made immediately. This tiny group will have to lead and inspire 53,000 uneasy state employees, of which 38,000 are union members. Lansing is filled with countless single-interest groups. They contribute the bulk of the money for legislative candidates, and they are organized mostly to protect the status quo, not work for change. Public employee unions, in particular, have in the past been a strong barrier to reform. Snyder will face a new legislature that is less experienced than any in history, thanks to term limits. For example, of the 38 members of the state senate, 29 will be new to the job. The few returning veterans have been there only four years at most The majority Republican caucus in the Senate, in particular, is very conservative; many members regard Snyder with narrowed eyes as a RINO (“Republican In Name Only.”) Like President Obama, Snyder may come to rue his party’s control of both houses of the legislature. Even though likely House Speaker James “Jase” Bolger (R-Marshall) is well regarded as a consensus-builder, it’s not clear what or who will protect the new governor from some of the wilder

ideas advocated by the right wing of his part…not to mention the overweening hubris that usually affects a political party that wins big. Add to the mix the fact that Snyder is a self-proclaimed political outsider, a very bright guy with essentially no experience in government or politics. I expect he will bring into his administration some of the most capable people in Michigan, regardless of party or political background. His first action was naming a very capable transition team of Doug Rothwell, CEO of Business Leaders for Michigan, Mark Murray, president of the Meijer chain, and Doug’s wife Sharon Rothwell, Governor Engler’s former chief of staff. The size of his victory will make it possible for him to claim a clear mandate for change. But, as Dome Magazine (www.domemagazine.com) headlined last week, “Can He Govern?” This is the $64,000 -- or make that, $1.6 billion – question. Campaigning is clearly not the same thing as governing. And, neither campaigning nor governing are far different from the skills in our new governor’s background. Team Snyder’s learning curve will be very steep; the time available to learn, organize and energize a new government is very short. But there is no choice. The tide is running, and Snyder – together with all of us in Michigan – must take the current as it flows and try to steer us on the right course. Whatever happens will surely be better than never having tried. *** Editor’s Note: Former newspaper publisher and University of Michigan Regent Phil Power is a longtime observer of Michigan politics and economics and a former chairman of the Michigan chapter of the Nature Conservancy. DeWitt’s combined Michigan Competing Band Association scores for the marching season seeded the 135-member band into fourth place in the state. This season’s show is entitled “The Four Freedoms.” This piece is a musical inter-

Providing a superior diet will extend a pet’s life Nearly every day I am asked about the correlation between what a pet eats and their life expectancy. Without hesitation I reply with the age old adage, “You are what you eat!” This is especially true for pets. Both wild and domestic animals have a calorie counter in their brain. It says, “Eat to meet your metabolic needs, then stop!” (Mine doesn’t work!). If you are a wild animal and are overweight you will not be fleet of foot, hence you’re someone’s lunch. Even though they have an unlimited food

Pet health Dr. Stephen R. Thimmig

supply, wild animals eat just enough to meet, and not exceed, their metabolic needs. During the hot humid days of summer wild animals will go two or three days without eating. That’s why you are able to see their ribs. They will drink multiple times during the day but consume only the calories they need.

Why do they need calories? Three reasons come to mind, to grow, to stay warm, and for physical activity. Adult animals are not growing. During the summer, very few, if any, calories are used to stay warm. Their only physical activity involves getting a drink of water and finding a cool place to rest. When it comes to feeding the family members who ambulate on four legs, we have a multitude of choices. The advancements made in pet nutrition are phenomenal! The daily nutrient requirements for both dogs and cats have

been clearly identified. Pets have the not so good fortune of having people intercede on their behalf. Everyone knows we should eat three (or more) meals a day. Forget about the fact that adults, unless they are exercising, are burning just about zero calories. We certainly need to drink plenty of water but the need for calories is next to nothing. How does all of this impact how we feed our pets? Those living the longest are consuming a diet that meets and does not exceed their energy needs. The best pet foods

have just the right amount of protein, correct level of carbs and a reasonable amount of fat to maintain a healthy coat. Because ingredients in Science Diet products do not vary from batch to batch, digestive upsets (diarrhea and vomiting) are kept to a minimum. Very little extra fiber is included. This means, on an as feed basis, portions are significantly smaller. You are getting more nutrition for your money and have to cleanup less excrement. Better nutrition, an annual comprehensive physical examination, internal and ex-

ternal parasite control, heartworm preventive medication, appropriate immunizations, and adequate exercise are all important factors in determining not only the length of a pets life but the quality of their life. For more information about this and other pet health concerns, contact an expert - your veterinarian. Dr. Stephen R. Thimmig leads an incredible Health Care Team at the Zeeb Pet Health Center and Three Shears for Pets. Visit them on the web at www.pethealth.net.

DeWitt goalkeeper Nick Iacobellis makes a save in the Panthers shootout loss to Holland in the regional championship game Oct. 30.

DeWitt soccer edged 1-0 in regional final By BILL McLEOD

November 7, 2010

bmcleod@lsj.com

MIDDLEVILLE — DeWitt soccer came up short in its bid for a Division 2 regional crown, losing to Holland 1-0 in a shootout Oct. 30. Holland outscored DeWitt 4-3 in the shootout after battling through 80 scoreless minutes of regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods. Most of the game was played near midfield with each defense stepping up to make the stop whenever an opponent neared its goal. “We didn’t get much offense today because our players got marked really tight with two or three (defensive) players around them,” DeWitt coach Jamal Mubarakeh said. “I am proud of my kids, they did everything they could do.” Holland (18-4-3) has surpassed all expectations in post-season play, beating Hudsonville Unity Christian 2-0 in the first round of districts. Unity was the top-ranked D-2 school in the state. DeWitt was ranked third in the state. The Dutch next face Grand Rapids Northview in the state semifinal Nov. 3 at Big Rapids. Northview is another top-five ranked team. Key to Holland’s success has been its defense, which has not allowed a goal in district or regional competitions. DeWitt managed only a few solid shots on goal. But the Panther defense also held the Dutch at bay throughout the game. In the

seven saves recorded by DeWitt goalkeeper Nick Iacobellis, only two came with power. “They’re midfielder was much bigger and stronger than ours,” Mubarakeh said. “They controlled the midfield and they controlled the battle.” Mubarakeh said the artificial turf at Middleville was different to play on than the grass the Panthers have played on all season long. “They (Holland) have home field turf, so they are used to it for a long time,” he said. “It was hard for us to know where the ball was going to go, the timing of it. It’s a faster game on turf.” Holland coach Greg Ceithaml said they were able to play their type of game against DeWitt. It was Holland’s first ever regional title. The Dutch have made it to the regional finals four times. “We have a great deal of momentum and confidence going right now,” he said. “I can’t wait to get to practice on Monday.” The Panthers ended the season with a Gold Division title, the CAAC Cup trophy and a district crown. Panther seniors Tyler Sherman and Esteban Russell each broke the school record for goals scored. Iacobellis set a school record for most shutouts. “This team played awesome soccer,” Mubarakeh said about the season. “In the soccer world everybody understands that somebody’s going to win and somebody’s going to lose.”

Panthers improve to 9-1, advance to district title contest against Mason squad By GEOFF KIMMERLY gkimmerly@lsj.com

DeWitt’s Jordan Johnson (left) and Alec Puffenberger celebrate after their teammate Collin Rennaker intercepted an East Lansing pass late in the fourth quarter, stopping a Trojan drive. The Panthers beat East Lansing 27-23 in the first round of district playoffs.

EAST LANSING — Swarmed by fans after he led DeWitt to a comeback victory over East Lansing, senior quarterback Caleb Higbie looked over the chaotic scene and let out a big smile. “That was awesome,” he said when a teammate embraced him. Higbie rushed for 181 yards and three touchdowns, including the game-winning 50-yard score with 4:49 remaining to give DeWitt a 27-23 victory in a Division 3 district opener Oct. 29. His calm demeanor during the postgame celebration was typical of the Panthers’ senior quarterback, who never seems to get rattled on or off the field. “He’s been tremendous for us all year long, and he was great again tonight and the key to our offense,” DeWitt coach Rob Zimmerman said. In addition to his outstanding rushing performance, Higbie also completed five passes, one of which was a 10-yard touchdown strike to his brother, Jacob, midway through the third quarter to give the Panthers a 21-14 lead. But senior quarterback Tyler Tucker and the Trojans would not go away quietly. With East Lansing’s talented junior receiver Efe Scott-Emuakpor knocked out of the game with a re-aggravated shoulder injury, Tucker turned to senior wideouts Devlin Bell and Cody Crawford for offense. Bell had a game-high eight receptions for 92 yards, while Crawford added six catches, including an 11-yard touchdown reception with 12:32 remaining in the game.

DeWitt (9-1) was able to block the Trojans’ extra point and remained ahead 21-20. After East Lansing (7-3) stopped the Panthers on a crucial fourth down attempt, Tucker went back to work, leading a 14-play drive, which he capped with a 24-yard field goal with 5:50 left in the game, to give the Trojans a 23-21 lead. “That was a credit to how much our seniors wanted this, it’s been happening all year,” East Lansing coach Bill Feraco said. “It is very rewarding as a coach to see your senior players step up right when we needed them to.” However, in the end, the Panthers’ high-powered offense proved to be too much for the Trojans defense, taking the late lead on Caleb Higbie’s touchdown run. East Lansing got the ball back with 4:45 remaining, but Tucker was intercepted by DeWitt’s Collin Rennaker on a fourth-down play to seal the victory. Senior Nathaniel Deak added 135 yards on the ground and a touchdown. The win was extra special for DeWitt, which had season-ending playoff losses to East Lansing in both 2007 and 2008. “A lot of people said that we can’t beat this school

because of what had happened in the past, but this was a huge win for us,” Zimmerman said. “Our kids held together and believed in themselves, and made big plays when we needed them to at the end of the game.” Tucker completed 22 passes for 157 yards and three touchdowns, while senior running back Spencer Treadwell added 121 yards on the ground for the Trojans. “That was a heck of a football game. I can’t fault the effort, DeWitt just made the plays when they had to and deserved to win,” Feraco said. DeWitt advances to play Mason in a district final Nov. 5. The winner advances to play the winner of Battle Creek-Harper Creek/Adrian in regional competition. Lady Bee spikers win first-ever conference crown By BILL McLEOD bmcleod@lsj.com

BATH — The Lady Bee volleyball team went undefeated in the CMAC tournament, earning Bath its first-ever league title Oct. 30. “The girls were ecstatic,” Bath coach Kristen McIntyre said. “Volleyball didn’t really get started until the late ‘70s, but still that’s a long time to have never won a league title.” The Bees were undefeated in league play going into the tournament. Pewamo-Westphalia, with an 8-1 league record, was the only team that could have threatened Bath for the league title. The Bees had beaten P-W the week before, giving the Pirates their only league loss of the season. But the showdown between Bath and P-W never materialized with the Pirates losing to Fowler in the first round of bracket play and then falling again to the Eagles in the consolation round. Bath started the tournament with a 25-19, 26-24 win over Potterville. Bath next beat Portland St. Patrick 25-15, 25-11 to advance to the semifinal where they bested Dansville 25-18, 26-24. Bath defeated Potterville 25-11, 19-25, 15-10 to win the tournament and take sole possession of the league title. Bath senior Kate Garrity had eight aces and 45 kills. Marie Micheaux, another senior had 86 assists and 33 digs. Sophomore Nicole Wahrer and senior Emily Bleech each had five blocks. Dansville finished second in the league. Potterville and Pewamo-Westphalia tied for third. Laingsburg was fifth; Fowler, sixth; Saranac, seventh; Fulton, eighth; Portland st. Patrick, ninth and Carson City-Crystal, 10th. Bath started districts with a four-game win over Potterville Nov. 2. The Bees lost the opener 25-21 then bounced back to beat the Vikings 25-21, 25-21 and 25-14. Micheaux had 34 assists, 17 digs and two aces. Bailey Brown had two aces. Garrity had three blocks and 17 kills. Wahrer had three blocks.
