DeWITT TWP. — A major sewer project is about get underway in DeWitt Township while utility officials try to address problems that caused sewer backups last month in Bath Township. Crews are scheduled to begin replacing sanitary sewer pump station 504 the week of June 13, causing road closures this summer in the Walnut Estates and Heritage Glen subdivisions, DeWitt Township officials said. The work is expected to be completed by early October. The lift station, now located on Blackwood Drive just south of Sanborn Drive, will be moved to the southeast corner of Sanborn and Willow Grove, Township Manager Rod Taylor said. New sewer lines will be installed from the existing pump station to the new station, Taylor said. The lift station was built in 1978 and has deteriorated to the point where it can’t be repaired, he said. The project will have “a significant impact” on neighborhood residents, township officials said. A stretch of Sanborn between Willow Grove and Blackwood will be closed to all traffic during the construction period, although the intersection of Sanborn and Willow Grove will remain open, they said. From approximately mid-August to late September, the Blackwood/Sanborn intersection - and Blackwood south of Sanborn - will be closed to through traffic, officials said. Crews will try to maintain access to driveways

on Blackwood during that phase, officials said. The contractor, Lawrence M. Clarke, will try to talk to residents before drives are closed, they said. The pump station replacement is a joint project between DeWitt and Bath townships. Bath accounts for about two-thirds of the sewage flowing through the station and is paying most of the cost with revenues from a 2009 bond issue. That lift station had no role in an overflow that caused sewage to back up into seven homes after a major storm on the weekend of May 13-15, local officials said. Storm water inundated the sewer system and overwhelmed a pump station along Sleight Road in Bath Township. Utility officials were assessing the cost of installing a temporary bypass at lift station 202 to ease potential problems, township Superintendent Troy Feltman said. Officials planned to meet with engineers late last week to discuss the cost of upgrading the lift station to double its capacity, he said. They also were considering a more aggressive program to reduce the volume of storm water entering the sewer system, Feltman said. “We need to demonstrate to the public that storm water shouldn’t be going into the sewer system,” he said. Meanwhile, the township has contacted all of the residents affected by the recent backup and offered to install backflow preventers at no cost to them, he said. Last weekend’s storm didn’t cause any overflow problems, although the sewer authority was prepared to do bypass pumping at station 202, Feltman said.

the uniforms each year. However, one can only hem and un-hem pants, shorten and lengthen sleeves and repair zippers so many times. The current uniforms are now 11 years old and can no longer be repaired and adjusted adequately. In addition, because the number of band members continues to increase each year, we no longer have enough uniforms for the number of students in the band. Our band needs new uniforms. We have worked with several uniform companies to find a new uniform. There was one company that was able to design a new, one of a kind uniform for the band that is sure to please the crowd. Now comes the hard part. We must raise the money to pay for these uniforms that our band students desperately need. We are coming to you, our community, to ask for your help. We know that money is tight for everyone but we are asking for anyone who has ever enjoyed watching our amazing band perform to consider helping us reach our goal of having these uniforms on the football field by the beginning of October. If you would like to make a monetary donation, please send it to: DeWitt Band Boosters PO Box 368, DeWitt, MI 48820 and reference uniforms on the envelope. Any donation, no matter how large or small, will help us reach our goal and please remember that all donations to the DeWitt Band Boosters and the DeWitt High School bands are tax deductible. We will be having many fundraisers over the summer See BAND BOOSTERS, Page 6

To the wonderful community of DeWitt and to DHS Marching Band fans everywhere: We are sure that if you live in DeWitt, you have had the pleasure of seeing our wonderful DeWitt High School Marching Band perform and you have probGUEST ably come to expect to see COLUMN the band at a football game DeWitt in the fall, the Memorial Band Boosters Day Parade or at the Ox Roast Parade each summer. The DeWitt High School Marching band is a much loved part of the community. In order to perform at community events, football games and to compete in MCBA events, marching band members spend every day of the first week of August each summer practicing from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. In addition to this band camp week, the band also rehearses every Monday night between August and November as well as rehearsing during the school day. This year, the band really saw all their hard work pay off. After a season of numerous rehearsals and competitions, the DeWitt High School Marching Band placed fourth in the state at MCBA State Finals Competition at Ford Field in Detroit. As the band becomes more and more successful, the competitive expectations become greater and the size of the band grows as well. The preceding statement is why we are writing you today. www.a1mechanical.com 3610 Old Lansing Road DeWitt resident Larry Arbanas donated these Japanese carp banners, known as Koi nobori, to the City of DeWitt to represent the student exhcange program through DeWitt Middle School. The banners were hung at the DeWitt Sports Park. Koi banners are hung in Japan around May 5 to celebrate Children’s Day. Pictured with Arbanas are DeWitt Middle School students who were to make a trip to Japan this year, but had to cancel due to the earthquake. The students raised $3,000 for the Japan Red Cross to use for relief efforts. COURTESY PHOTO.

.%==#4D%!F 5C== 1# ,9&C6G .9FE 0#<D 5##@( International Vintage Guitar Collectors Association

By Bryan Durbin STAFF WRITER The International Vintage Guitar Collectors Association will be placing ads in newspapers, radio and running television spots this week asking people to bring in any and all guitars. Those that do bring in their guitars will be able to speak with collectors one on one and have their items looked at by a specialist. With the help of these IVGCA members, offers will be made to those that have vintage and modern guitars. Those made before 1970 are most valuable. All guitars will be examined and purchased including vintage guitars, acoustic guitars, banjos, any and all other types of musical instruments. Those that decide to sell their items will be paid on the spot. If you are like a lot of people, you might have an old Vintage Guitar lying around. If you have ever wondered what it’s worth, now might be your chance to find out and even sell it, if you choose. Vintage guitars could be worth a lot according to the International Vintage Guitar Collectors Association also known as IVGCA. Collectors will pay a fortune for Vintage Guitars, Banjos, Acoustic Guitars and even Drum Sets for their collections. If they are rare enough, one could be worth over $100,000 according to David Mcintosh, Vintage Guitar Collector and IVGCA member. One 1960 Gibson Les Paul went for $100,000 to a collector in July of 2007. While that is an extreme example, many rare and valuable guitars are stashed away in attics, closets, basements, or in a garage around the country. The IVGCA and its collectors have organized a traveling event in search of all types of Vintage Guitars and Instruments. “Even common guitars can be worth a significant amount due to high collector demands,” says Mcintosh. These collectors are seeking the rarest guitars including Martin, Gibson, Gretsch and Rickenbacker. These guitars always bring big premiums according to the IVGCA.

So, whether you have one instrument you think might be valuable or a large collection you recently inherited, you can talk to these collectors for free. If you’re lucky, you may have a rarity worth thousands. Either way, there is nothing to lose and it sounds like fun.

County reminds residents of recycling site rules Plastic bags are not acceptable in any county recycling bins ST. JOHNS — The Clinton County Department of Waste Management would like to remind residents that plastic bags put in the recycling collection containers at any of the rural recycling sites within Clinton County are not acceptable nor are they recycled. The bags are a prohibited material in the recycling bins and have to be tossed out during further processing of the material. Plastic bags in the recycling bins slow down processing and increase the costs to recycle the materials. This has been a

problem specifically at the Eagle Township drop off site in the plastic bottle recycling container. The best way to recycle plastic bags is to keep them separate and then take them to any major retail store. Those retailers have established a well planned recycling system to recover the plastic shopping bags. Residents are asked to help keep the cost of recycling down and make sure what is put into the bin can be recycled. For additional information on any of Clinton County’s recycling programs, please contact our office at (989) 224-5186 or email conserve@clinton-county.org or check out our website www.clintoncounty.org — From the Clinton County Dept. of Waste Management

Panthers best Owosso for Classic win DeWitt to face Holt in Diamond Classic semifinals on June 6

LANSING — DeWitt baseball advanced to the Diamond Classic semifinals on three-hit pitching by junior Alec Leece, beating Owosso 9-1 in a quarterfinal game May 28. “I just felt good about all my pitches today,” Leece said. “I have to give credit to my defense as well. They made some great defensive plays out there.” Leece stymied Owosso hitters with a variety of pitches, including a dominant curveball that seemed near unhittable at times. “He’s tough to adjust to because you just don’t see a lot of lefthanders with that big of a curveball,” DeWitt coach Alan Shankel said of Leece. “I love the effort we got out of him today.” DeWitt scored the first four runs of the game on two passed balls and two sacrifice flies by juniors Austin Rusnell and Nick Iacobellis. The Panthers knocked Owosso starter Austin Buchmayer out of the game in the fifth inning after three straight singles and an RBI walk by Nick McCoy. Buchmayer went 4 2/3 innings, while allowing five runs on nine hits. “We knew he was tough, so we just went into this game with an aggressive mindset,” Shankel said. “I told the guys to focus on hitting the ball hard, and then we’ll see what happens.” DeWitt added four more runs in the sixth, highlighted

Timely Tips for Hiring Remodelers Red Flags For Identifying the Unprofessional Remodeler Doesn’t have a license or insurance. All remodelers should be able to demonstrate evidence of both. Doesn’t write contracts. Without a clear written plan, it’s difficult to know what work you are both agreeing to complete. Expectations should be agreed to in writing. Requires payment in full prior to starting the job. It’s reasonable for your contractor to ask for payment up front to purchase materials for your job. Shady contractors demand full payment and may leave with the money. Vastly underbids other contractors. The Panthers came up short in the district opener, losing to Williamston 14-6 May 31. DeWitt fell behind 3-0 in the first inning. The Panthers cut the Hornet lead to 3-2 then tied the game at three-all in the fourth inning when Acre hit a double to score Trevor Bowers and tie the game. Senior Dylan Schultz blasted a two-run home run in the top of the fifth to give Williamston the lead again, but DeWitt junior Nick Iacobellis hit a two-run, two-out double to tie the game in the bottom half of the inning. Iacobellis went from second to home on a ground ball up the middle. As Schultz ranged to his left from shortstop to scoop the ball and throw to first, Iacobellis rounded third and came home, sliding in safe before the tag was applied. It seemed like the Panthers had not only taken the lead at that point, but some of the momentum too. But Williamston senior Nik Jump hit a bases-clearing double off the wall in dead center to score three runs in the top of the sixth. Schultz followed with an RBI single and then senior pitcher Dylan Monette hit a two-run home run to give the Hornets an 11-6 lead. All six runs in the inning came with two outs. “I’m really proud of the guys the way we fought back,” Shankel said. “We got down 3-0 first inning, fought back took the lead. We couldn’t get that third out in the sixth inning, walked the nine hitter and that was kind of the beginning of the rally that they put on us and they had some clutch hits.”

SARANAC — Bath base-

ball opened district play with an 18-3 win over Saranac May 31 in a game that was shortened to three innings under the mercy rule. The game was originally scheduled to be played at Bath, but because the Bee field was rain soaked the game was played at Saranac. Nick Stiles was the winning pitcher, improving his season record to 9-2. Stiles helped himself to the win by going 2-for-4 at the plate with a double and four RBI. Ryan Orr went 2-for-3 with three RBI. Brandon Wahrer

was 1-for-1 and drove in three runs. Brenden Plemmons hit a double and drove in two runs. The Bees were coming off a 7-0 loss to Holt in the Diamond Classic May 27. Stiles was the losing pitcher, striking out eight. Stiles hit a triple and Brodie Megill had a double. Bath played Lansing Catholic in the district semifinal June 4 with results too late for this edition. The winner played the winner of the other semifinal game between Perry and Laingsburg. Regionals will be held at Olivet June 11 with the winner of the Bath district facing the winner of the Hopkins district at 10 a.m.

we know each other,” Kibby said about CMAC rival Saranac. “When we can come back and get them in a district game, that’s a good job for us.” Saranac was coming off a doubleheader win over nonleague Ionia. “They’re a good team, they can hit and they can field,” Kibby said. “We put the ball in play and made them play defense and I think that’s where their youth showed up.” Bath senior Taylor Toune was the winning pitcher, striking out five. “It was nice and hot and I like to be warm when I pitch,” Toune said about

the 90-plus degree day. “It was a perfect day for softball and my arm felt good today.” “We really came together as a team and it’s easier for me because I

know I have a solid defense behind me,” she said. In the first inning, Bath’s McKaylah Adams and Amanda Chaffee each reached base on hard hits to the Redskin third baseman that were mishandled. Sam Hayes blasted a shot up the middle to score Adams. Bath looked to add to its three-run lead in the second inning when Ashley Wahr

singled and Chelsea Thomas reached based on a bunt. McKaylah Adams blasted a ball to deep left center, but Saranac senior Morgan Vickery ran down the ball, making an over the shoulder catch for the third out. “I was really scared,” Vickery said to her teammates in the dugout, “I totally snow coned the ball.”

Bath iced the game in the bottom of the fourth inning when Thomas walked and Amie Pumfrey beat out a bunt. Both runners advanced on a passed ball and scored on an Adams single to left. Adams scored on a hit by Sam Hayes. Toune drew a walk and pinch runner Sadie Bass scored on a sacrifice fly to left centerfield by Jana

Dempsey. Bath’s last two runs came in the bottom of the sixth when Amanda Chaffee doubled to center and scored on a double by Hayes. Toune was safe on an infield error and scored on a Redskin infield error.

The Bees played Lansing Catholic in the district semifinal June 4 with results too late for this edition. The winner of the Bath district advances to regionals at Olivet June 11, facing the winner of the Hopkins district.

DHS Hall of Fame adds track, cross country standout DeWITT — Throughout the 1980s, DeWitt High School was known across the state for its fine girls cross country and track and field teams. Teri Osborn, a 1990 graduate, excelled in both sports at DeWitt before moving on to capture more championships and individual records at both Lansing Community College and Grand Valley State University. Her accomplishments make her one of the most decorated individual runners in school history. Balancing academic success with athletic prowess, she stands as a fine role model for female studentathletes at DeWitt. Osborn’s mother, Bev, traces her success back to the day that Teri came home from her elementary field day in third grade. She was fired up about running after a motivational pep talk from one of her teachers, and she has been running long dis-

Osborn tance ever since. In high school, Osborn earned AllLeague and All-Area honors on the cross country course all four years. She was selected All-State as a sophomore (eighth in the state individually) as she helped lead DeWitt to the 1987 Class C girls state championship in cross country. As a junior, the team finished third in the state, but Osborn finished first overall

individually. She was undefeated that entire season until a fourth place finish at the regional meet. Driven to make up for that single loss, Osborn fought through rainy and muddy conditions at the state meet to capture the Class C individual crown. As a senior, Osborn captured another league championship before completing her high school career with an 11th place finish at the state championships. “Teri was an integral part of our program’s success during the 1980s,” said DeWitt coach Barry Kloenhamer. “She was our first Class B All-Stater when DeWitt made the jump up from Class C to Class B.” Osborn excelled in track and field as well, earning All-League honors all four years of high school. She was a member of the league champion 3,200-meter relay team as both a freshman

and a sophomore. As a junior, she took home league championships in the 3,200 meter run, 1,600 meter run and 3,200 meter relay. At the end of her senior year, Osborn was chosen as the Female Athlete of the Year at DeWitt in 1990. The accolades grew for Osborn when she moved on to Lansing Community College with an athletic scholarship, where she was a See OSBORN, Page 25
