FROM THE CHANCELLOR Dear Alumni and Friends, Allen, Jessie, Margaret, and I have enjoyed our first Southwest Virginia fall here on the UVa-Wise campus. Our family spent the summer exploring the region and experiencing all the wonders Southwest Virginia offers its residents and visitors.

The fall color change on the mountains has provided a beautiful backdrop for our ongoing explorations.

It was a busy fall semester as we greeted our returning students back to campus.

Fall Convocation welcomed freshmen and transfer students to the UVa-Wise family. It has been a semester of change and growth as well.

Work continues at a fast pace on the Winston Ely Health and Wellness Center and the new library. The construction projects have resulted in detours around some buildings and areas. These inconveniences will be worth it once the buildings are completed. The library construction made it necessary to find a new home for the statue of Mr. Jefferson. Crews spent several hours moving him from upper campus to his new home in the Sunken Garden located near Crockett Hall.

Chancellor Donna P. Henry Our Highland Cavaliers began competition in the new Mountain East Conference as we continue the transition to NCAA Division II. We celebrated the inaugural season by giving specially designed t-shirts and Cavalier Cookies at the first home game of conference play for each sport. The t-shirts are popular with our Highland Cavalier fans as well as the opposing teams. It is exciting to see students and fans wearing the familiar “V” logo t-shirt with the names of the Mountain East Conference teams printed on the back.

Hundreds of alumni were welcomed back to campus for Homecoming 2013. There are several photos of Homecoming events in this edition of the UVa-Wise Magazine. I enjoyed meeting our alumni and look forward to their future visits.

The Benefactors Celebration was a success as we expressed appreciation to alumni and friends. Their generous support allows UVa-Wise to stay true to its mission to make a quality liberal arts education accessible and affordable to all students.

The College was once again ranked second in the nation on the list of public liberal arts colleges and universities whose students graduate with the lowest debt load, according to U.S. New and World Report.

UVa-Wise welcomed Temple Grandin, an animal behavior scientist whose work creating humane cattle handling facilities changed the way the beef industry conducts business. Nearly 900 people attended Grandin’s lecture. You can read about her visit in this edition as well.

The College’s new strategic plan, known as Envisioning 2020, was recently approved by the College Board and the Board of Visitors. The cover story on E2020 highlights the established goals and strategies for accomplishing these goals.

As you can see, it has been a busy semester as I wrap up my first full year as Chancellor. I look forward to seeing you in the community and at college events. Thank you for your continued support which keeps Mr. Jefferson’s dream alive in Southwest Virginia.

A visit with Temple Grandin

Student Support Services celebrates 40th anniversary

The subject of an award-winning HBO film starring Clare Danes, Grandin railed against a society in which the label of autism coupled with lax parenting could lead potential Einsteins and Teslas to unproductive lives.

Since its inception at the College in 1973 under the federally funded TRiO umbrella, the program has been a pillar of strength in helping firstgeneration and low-income students with academic needs attain a college degree.

Honoring the genius of

SMIDDY The newly renovated Smiddy Hall welcomes visitors to The University of Virginia’s College at Wise, just as its namesake Joseph C. Smiddy did during his three decades of service to the College.

“It greets you, just like Joe did,” said Smiddy’s longtime friend and colleague George Culbertson ’57 as the College rededicated Smiddy Hall on Tuesday, June 11.

Culbertson joined University of Virginia President Teresa A. Sullivan, UVa-Wise Chancellor Donna P. Henry and others in a ceremony that honored Smiddy, the College’s first chancellor, and his tireless and often unique efforts to nurture a young two-year school into a thriving four-year institution.

“He became the face of this institution,” Culbertson said.

“Everyone knew and trusted Joe, and they trusted that he was going to do the right thing.”

The genius of Smiddy was and still remains his ability to work with people and to cultivate those relationships in ways that benefitted the College, Culbertson said. Smiddy’s priority was academics, and he made sure that those without financial resources had a way to attend college.

“Throughout the history of the institution, you see the genius of Joe,” Culbertson said.

Culbertson reminded the crowd that Smiddy defied Virginia segregation laws and admitted the first black student when it was illegal to do so. He recalled how Smiddy and powerful Virginia Delegate Orby Cantrell worked in Richmond on a bill that allowed the College to become a four-year institution.

“I think the stars were in alignment when Joe was convinced to come here,” Culbertson said.

Chancellor Henry called Smiddy an illustrious man who provided extraordinary service to UVa-Wise.

“As chancellor, he knew well the sacrifice that families made to give their children access to higher education,” Henry said.

“He espoused and modeled the ‘can do’ attitude, passionate engagement and total perseverance that made students successful here.”

Chancellor Henry said UVa-Wise would “rededicate” itself to the principles Smiddy established.

President Sullivan said the words Virginia uses to market southwestern Virginia apply to Smiddy as well.

“Authentic, distinctive and alive,” she said. “You are certainly authentic. You are certainly distinctive. You worked for decades to serve and lead this College so students could become distinguished leaders.”

Smiddy’s “aliveness” refers to his “great human vibrancy” and “aliveness” that worked its way into every aspect of the College, she said.

“This is a great day for my family and my friends and for all those people who helped me be here on this day,” Smiddy said.

Smiddy recalled how the entire College worked as a team to serve the region, even if that included the chancellor grabbing a mop to clean up after a roof leak.

“You didn’t have anyone to call in those days,” he said. “You just grabbed a mop.”

Completed in 1972 as the administration building, Smiddy Hall was officially named in 1985 on the occasion of Smiddy’s retirement after 30 years of leadership and service to the College. Smiddy Hall was renovated in 2011 to house faculty and administrative offices as well as classrooms. A new Information Technology wing was added to the building during the renovation.

Smiddy, a native of Jellico, Tenn., helped establish Clinch Valley College, now known as UVa-Wise. After his service in World War II, the educator, storyteller and traditional Appalachian musician, began his career as a high school teacher, band director and principal in the Lee County Public Schools. He was hired as the College’s first biology professor in 1954 and later served as dean and director of the College prior to being named its first chancellor.

He cultivated the fledgling College from a two-year institution to a four-year college. Under his leadership, CVC was the first state college or university founded in Virginia without a policy of racial exclusion and was the first to recruit actively among all races. He stayed true to the College’s mission of making higher education available to all regardless of financial circumstances.

Class of 2013 nursing graduates receive a 100 percent board pass rate The University of Virginia’s College at Wise nursing graduates from the Class of 2013 accomplished something special this summer as all 17 passed their board exams on the first try.

“Garnering a 100 percent pass rate on the stringent board exam is something only a few schools have accomplished. There are less than a handful of schools in any state that achieve this honor,” Nursing Department Chair Cathie Collins explained.

“The department has worked very hard to uphold progression standards increase admission standards, and implement changes to the curriculum that address essential content and foster critical thinking,” Collins said.

The nursing department faculty has attended multiple workshops to improve its knowledge of nursing education and curriculum, which has had a major impact on the entire program.

“We have incorporated many new technologies into the curriculum, including an increased emphasis on simulation, use of electronic health records and the use of telehealth to give the students challenging, real-life experiences,” Collins said. “All of this has helped prepare our students for their careers as nurses.”

The pass rate is a huge accomplishment, especially when the national average is 85 percent.

“There is a critical nursing shortage nationally, and UVa-Wise is proud to have had a role in adding 17 new registered nurses to the healthcare field,” said UVa-Wise Chancellor Donna P. Henry. “Congratulations are in order for our graduates and our nursing faculty.

It takes a great deal of hard work and determination to achieve a 100 percent pass rate, and it is another example of the high standards set by our nursing faculty and students.”

An interesting aspect of the Class of 2013’s achievement is that it came during the first year of a new test plan. Collins explained that the National Council of State Boards of Nursing issues a new test plan every three years, and the difficulty of the test increases each time.

“Typically we see a drop in student pass rates the first year of a new test plan because the exam has increased in difficulty,” Collins said. “It is pretty impressive in itself for our students to have a 100 percent pass rate in a new test year.”

UVa-Wise among top liberal arts colleges with lowest debt load The University of Virginia’s College at Wise is once again among the top public national liberal arts colleges whose students graduate with a low debt load, according to the latest issue of U.S. News and World Report’s annual college guide.

The UVa-Wise Class of 2012 completed their degrees with less debt than students at all but one of the nation’s public liberal arts colleges. UVa-Wise has been among the top three for more than a decade, according to the 2014 college guide, which hit newsstands on Sept. 10.

Among the UVa-Wise Class of 2012, just 56 percent graduated with debt. The average amount of debt for UVa-Wise graduates is $11,524. UVa-Wise finished behind Louisiana State University-Alexandria by $23 in the rankings. In comparison, the average debt load for students at St. Anselm College in New Hampshire is $42,631, the liberal arts college with the largest average student debt.

“When today’s economy has some people questioning the value of a four-year college degree, our consistent ranking by U.S. News and World Report as a college that provides a strong liberal arts education without crippling debt is a source of pride,” UVa-Wise Chancellor Donna P. Henry said.

More than 80 percent of UVa-Wise students receive financial aid, one of the highest percentages in Virginia.

“Our mission at UVa-Wise is to work hard to make a four-year degree affordable and accessible to students, and it is tremendously rewarding to know that a primary benefit of a UVa-Wise education is that our graduates begin careers or graduate school with low or no debt,” Henry said.

Rusty Necessary, vice chancellor for enrollment management, said the strong commitment of scholarship donors is reflected in the College’s consistent ranking near or at the top of the low debt load in the survey.

Following a childhood dream

J

ordan Childress, a UVa-Wise senior, realized a childhood dream this summer as the official radio announcer for the Bristol White Sox baseball team.

Childress now knows exactly what he wants to do after he earns his communication degree in May. “I want to live out of a suitcase and be in a different city every three nights,” the Dickenson County native said.

“I love the bus trips and the road life. I’ve wanted to work in baseball since I was seven.”

He interned with the Bristol White Sox while a junior because he wanted to use the skills he learned in the classroom, especially those from his communication classes.

“It was time to get some experience,” he said. “I live, sleep and dream baseball, so doing public address work for the Bristol White Sox was a good fit.”

Childress returned for a second summer with the White Sox organization this year on the condition that he would do radio for the team’s games. He was the official team radio announcer, which meant he was calling the plays for all 61 games. Childress also handled the Bristol Herald Courier Pregame Show.

He researched the organization’s new draft picks, many signed straight from high school and some from college, and called them for interviews. Childress, 22, found himself the old man among the newly drafted players, including 16-year-old Mickel Zapata from the Dominican Republic.

“I was the first person to interview him once he became a White Sox player,” Childress said. “I got to know the guys well, and I hope to see them do well in the future. I became friends Photo by Jonathan McCoy with 18-year-old millionaires. It was unreal.”

Jordan Childress Childress had the honor of calling the plays when the young minor league batters hit their first career home runs as professional baseball players, and he provided color commentary during their first hitting streaks. He collected several autographed bats during the summer.

As the “old man,” Childress, who is sports editor for the Highland Cavalier newspaper, also reassured the parents that their sons were eating well and showing up for the games in clean uniforms. The contact with the parents was special for Childress, especially since many of the fathers were former major league players themselves.

He was also the first in the Appalachian League to interview Buddy Bell, the vice president and director of scouting for the Chicago White Sox, and he chatted with baseball great Tim Raines, best known for his years with the Montreal Expos.

Childress wants to continue working in baseball and radio. He will attend the Baseball Winter Meeting in December to apply for one of about 500 jobs in Major League Baseball.

“I want to wake up each morning and be happy to go to work,” Childress said. “My goal is to work for the Cincinnati Reds. I’d like to encourage other students to look for ways to get practical experience in their fields of study so they can apply the things they’ve learned in class to the real world.”

HEADLINES The David J. Prior Convocation Center at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise has been awarded LEED Silver certification by the United States Green Building Council.

The Prior Center is the second LEED certified building on the UVa-Wise campus.

The Leonard W. Sandridge Science Center earned LEED Platinum certification.

The LEED program, an initiative of the USGBC, stands for leadership in energy and environmental design, and focuses on encouraging a sustainable approach to building design, construction and operation.

The LEED program has five main categories in which points toward certification may be earned for new construction and major renovations.

“UVa-Wise has a deep commitment to responsible design, construction and renovation,” Chancellor Donna P. Henry said. “An important part of the commitment is to plan and construct facilities that ensure the sustainability of the campus physical plant. Quality planning is especially critical as our College continues its transformation toward new and renovated buildings and facilities that will improve the overall campus experience.”

The Prior Center, which seats 3,000 for sporting events and more for concerts and other events, is the largest single capital project in the College’s history. The architect for the building was VMDO Architects from Charlottesville, Va. The contractor was Quesenberry’s Inc., of Big Stone Gap, Va.

Construction of The David J. Prior Convocation Center was completed in 2011.

Greenblatt to lecture in April

The Prior Center is host to College, regional and state events.

Stephen Greenblatt, the Cogan University Professor of English and American Literature and Language at Harvard University, will visit campus on April 17. The lecture was made possible by the Glenn and Jere Noel Blackburn Endowment for the Humanities Series.

Greenblatt, regarded by many as one of the founders of New Historicism, a set of critical practices that he calls “cultural poetics,” will speak at 7 p.m. in the David J. Prior Convocation Center. Human values will be the topic of his lecture, and the event is free and open to the public.

He has penned and edited numerous books and articles relevant to the study of culture, Renaissance studies and Shakespeare, and he is considered an expert in those areas. He is also co-founder of the literary-cultural journal Representations, which features articles by new historicists.

His most popular book, “Will in the World,” a biography of Shakespeare, was a New York Times bestseller for more than two months.

Andrew Slemp ’08

Andrew Slemp ’08 considered a law degree when he enrolled at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise, but then he took his first psychology class.

The course, taught by Dean of Students Jewell Worley, was fascinating to the Lee County native. He was hooked. Slemp later earned a degree in psychology, and built a reputation for working with autistic youngsters in the region.

“I wasn’t planning on it,” Slemp said.

“It was fascinating. As I look back on my years at UVa-Wise, the people that were most important to me were the psychology faculty. They did a great job.”

Slemp decided to attend graduate school at Eastern Kentucky University to pursue a master’s degree in clinical psychology. When he started his graduate study, Slemp soon found out that his former professors at UVa-Wise had prepared him well for the rigorous field.

“The abnormal psychology course I took at UVa-Wise really stood out,” Slemp said. “I ended up knowing more than others in certain graduate classes because of what I had learned at Wise.”

The work he did in Professor Jim Horton’s psychology lab gave him an edge when it came to research situations.

Armed with a new master’s degree, Slemp looked at a variety of careers, including counseling and residence life departments in higher education, but he eventually selected a post as a counselor for children. Some of the children were listed at various places on the autism spectrum, but most were not. However, Slemp was attracted to the challenge of working with autistic youngsters and their families.

Slemp has worked for the Family Preservation Services for a while, and he has steered the organization’s autism services for three years.

“Working with children with autism is very enjoyable,” Slemp said. “It is challenging at times, especially when working with children who are without language, but I often get to see the changes over time, and that aspect is very rewarding.”

Many people are of the opinion that autistic children are basically the same, but Slemp is quick to point out the error of that thought.

“If you have met one child with autism, then you’ve met one child with autism,” Slemp said. “They are all different.”

Slemp often works with the children after they have had a full day at school, which means they are usually tired and ready for a break.

“It can be taxing for them, so I try to develop things that the kids really enjoy,” he said.

Vocational skills are often part of the plan, but Slemp looks for ways to branch out and add new things that will add something positive, not just necessary, to their lives.

_ Many autistic children struggle with language skills, and many have their own language. One of Slemp’s challenges is to break the language code.

“I try to get them to make their requests with more sentences,” Slemp said. “It is challenging to create language, but we are changing and enhancing their lives.”

David and Heather Volk, parents of an autistic son, say Slemp changed their lives though his work.

“Andrew forever changed not only Reese’s life, but ours as well,” the Volks said. “His patience, knowledge and support became our touchstone when we had no other.”

Parents and siblings are often left out of the equations when it comes to support services once a child is diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder, the Volks said. That was not the case with Slemp and FPS. “Andrew never let that happen,” the Volks said. “We are better parents and better people for having had him in our lives.”

And just as Slemp was eager to learn from his professors at UVa-Wise, the children he works with teach him something new each day.

“Most people work at something and then move on to get the next thing done without really noticing the little things,” Slemp said. “The children I work with get excited about the smaller things, and that is refreshing. It puts things in perspective, because there are a lot of awesome, cool things that we just need to notice.”

Temple Grandin visits campus

They arrived at the David J. Prior Convocation Center around 5 p.m. on Sept. 19, but many had been planning the trip for months.

Some came in groups. Others arrived alone or with friends or family.

Temple Grandin, a renowned scientist diagnosed with autism at a young age, was lecturing at UVa-Wise, and they were determined not to miss her visit. She did not disappoint.

Grandin, named one of Time magazine’s most influential people, took the stage before an estimated crowd of nearly 900 to deliver the annual Colgate Darden Lecture. Dressed in her trademark colorful cowboy shirt and western tie, the Colorado State University professor spoke about autism, animal behavior, her career as a designer of efficient and humane livestock facilities, and the difficulties of being a woman in a male dominated world.

She spoke with candor about school systems that have eliminated shop classes when there is a vital need for workers in technical fields and other trades.

“One of my big concerns today is that kids are not learning work skills,” she said. “That needs to happen now. When I was 13, my mother got me a sewing job, and when I was 15, I was cleaning horse stalls.”

Grandin said the jobs did not just happen. Her mother, a staunch supporter, arranged the jobs for her, and it created a strong work ethic that she carries with her today. Children today, she said, need to be taught manners, given chores, and encouraged to find a job similar to the old paper routes that were common decades ago.

“Too many kids are getting obsessed with video games and not work,” she said. “That is unacceptable. I was brought up in the ‘50s, and I was taught to say please, thank you, dinner manners, and 8 UVa-Wise Magazine

how to take turns. I learned that I did not get to always do what I wanted.”

The jobs she landed at an early age gave her self-esteem because of the responsibility they carried.

“I loved my jobs,” she said. “I was proud to have the responsibility.”

She encouraged parents and teachers of autistic children to find something the child is interested in, and then use that topic to teach different skills. Her love of horses and cows stemmed from long visits to her aunt’s ranch, which helped her develop her career.

“There are a lot of kids out there that are kind of quirky and nerdy that are getting these different labels,” she said. “What we have to do is help them be successful.”

Most of all, Grandin vividly showed the crowd that there are different ways of seeing the world, and she shared some of those avenues with the audience.

“If you want to understand animals or autism, let’s get away from words,” she said. “An animal’s memory is going to be in pictures, smells, or the tone of a call. We’ve got to get away from language.”

Autistic people and animals notice details, and Grandin said people with “normal” ways of thinking often fail to see details. Thinking in pictures and noticing the details that others fail to see helped her launch a successful career.

“I realized at an early age that I was different,” she said. “But being a visual thinker has been an asset in my career of designing livestock facilities.”

A self-described nerd and geek, Grandin said she was forced to show her work and sell her work rather than to sell her personality.

Grandin spoke of overcoming adversity in her career, but she made it clear that autism was not at the top of the list of obstacles.

“Yeah, I was considered a weirdo,” she said. “But autism wasn’t part of the equation. It was being a woman in an industry dominated by men.”

A press pass she received when she landed a journalism job writing for a cattle industry publication allowed her access to stockyards and slaughterhouses during a time when women were forbidden to enter.

Early in her career, Grandin was considered strange when she used her “bottom up” thinking skills to quickly discover what small item spooked cattle and caused beef production to stall. But her reputation grew and today more than half of the beef production companies use facilities she designed.

“Today’s educational trends are problematic,” she said. “Taking away art classes, shop courses, band, and other subjects is harmful because those classes may be the only thing that keep some students, especially autistic kids, in school.”

“I’m concerned our educational system is failing our visual thinkers,” she said. “It is a giant shame they’re taking out hands on classes. The art classes I had in elementary school and carpentry classes and working with horses saved me in high school.”

Grandin took many questions after her lecture. Most were from parents asking for advice on ways to help their autistic children.

Many autistic children should really be in gifted and talented programs, she said.

“Many talented, quirky, and gifted students are going nowhere because they have no mentors,” she said. “The worst thing you can do is nothing.”

After fielding questions, Grandin signed books and chatted with those who wanted to talk briefly to her about her career in animal science and, of course, autism.

Kristi Kendall drove several hours from Kentucky to meet Grandin, and she brought her friend Johna Lawson along. Kendall and Lawson are dog groomers.

“A few years ago Johna watched the HBO movie about Temple Grandin,” Kendall said. “She watched it over and over again and made me watch it again and again and again.”

“There are a lot of kids out there that are kind of quirky and nerdy that are getting these different labels; what we have to do is help them be successful.”

Kendall read about Grandin’s upcoming visit to UVa-Wise, and she thought it would be a nice surprise to bring Lawson to Wise without telling her where they were going. They hopped in the car and drove two hours to Wise.

“I eventually figured it out today,” Lawson said. “Seeing Temple Grandin here was just awesome.”

Professor Christopher Scalia, a lecture committee member, was pleased with the turnout and with Grandin’s visit.

“The crowd was great,” he said. “The question and answer session lasted longer than the lecture, which showed her enthusiasm.”

40 YEARS Stephanie T. Osborne ’04 received a phone call last year inviting her to meet with Vice President Joe Biden.

She thought it was a scam. Little did she know that along with being chosen as the recipient for the R.J. Reynolds Excellence in Teaching Award she would have the opportunity to meet Biden and his wife, Jill, an English teacher for Northern Virginia Community College.

Osborne is also an English instructor and a writing center director at Gaston College in North Carolina. She makes it a point to genuinely get to know her students and believes that positive supportive relationships can truly make remarkable differences in the lives of students. These same types of relationships made a world of difference for her. She often credits the Student Support Services program at UVa-Wise for her success as an educator now because that’s where she saw the importance of building relationships modeled by the SSS staff.

“The Student Support Services program kept me motivated and helped me to set goals,” said Stephanie. “My roots in TRiO as a peer tutor helped me to see that students need people who love them, care about them and want them to succeed.”

Student Support Services celebrates landmark anniversary

With countless success stories like Osborne’s, it is no wonder the program is celebrating its 40th anniversary this academic year by providing continued outreach and support to students.

Since its inception at the College in 1973 under the federally funded TRiO umbrella, the program has been a pillar of strength in helping first-generation and low-income students with academic needs attain a college degree.

TRiO’s initial origins on campus began with a federal grant awarded for the Upward Bound program. The program, headed by Dick Davidson, provided support to high school students from low-income families and from families in which neither parent held a bachelor’s degree. The program provided pre-college support and higher education pursuits.

A few years later Ron Elosser became program director of Upward Bound and with the help of Julia Heise, they together wrote a grant in the spring of 1973 securing funding for a Special Services for Disadvantaged Students program. In fall of 1973, Elosser became the director of both Upward Bound and Special Services for Disadvantaged Students, which was eventually shortened to Student Support Services. Heise became the first Student Support Services counselor. The program was designed for college students whose socioeconomic backgrounds, educational records, and personal situations suggest they may experience challenges that could be alleviated with use of support services.

“When we were funded in 1973, we served the minimum 100 students and were able to hire a secretary by putting both grants together,” says Julia Heise.

“There was a half time director, a half time secretary and a full time counselor.

We did not have any other paid staff.

We did all tutoring available with student help.”

The offices were initially located in Zehmer next to the old post office location. Heise recalls when students would work just about anywhere they could find space. .

“Our purpose is to increase retention and graduation rates in addition to fostering an institutional climate supportive of eligible students, including those who are homeless, in foster care, or ESL.”

“We did tutoring outside the post office on the tables. Students would work outside of that area, in vacant classrooms or anywhere there was a space,” said Heise. “At that time, there were really only two classroom buildings, Zehmer and the Science Building, so we had to work in empty rooms and vacant spaces. We did not have a designated area other than that, which was a challenge.”

As Student Support Services continued to grow, Heise eventually became director and served nearly two decades until her retirement in 2001. And while the players may have changed and moved on, the program is as strong as ever.

Statistics continue to show that the program works. The retention rate over the past three years, from fall to fall, of all participants averages 85 percent and at least 80 percent of all participants end the year in good academic standing.

“Our purpose is to increase retention and graduation rates in addition to fostering an institutional climate supportive of eligible students, including those who are homeless, in foster care, or ESL,” said TRiO Director Marcia Mitchell. “The services we offer include academic advising, freshman seminar, tutoring, special topic workshops, grant aid, career counseling, academic coaching, and financial literacy education to name a few.”

Heise believes that the long running existence of the grant-sponsored program, over four decades, is proof of success.

“We have, over the years, been able to be creative and yet respond to not just what the funding demands were, but more importantly to what the needs of our student community were,” said Heise. “And today Marcia deserves credit for running a program that meets students needs while growing and being successful in a government bureaucracy that requires you to meet very specific measures.”

Mitchell is quick to point out that while Student Support Services has helped thousands of first generation and lowincome students and students with disabilities, relying on these past achievements is not something the program does.

“This is especially important as we prepare to write for refunding in 2014,” said Mitchell. “As with many federally sponsored activities, the legislative and executive behaviors have led to cuts and concern about the future of all TRiO programs. My hope for the future on this campus is that we will be able to continue providing quality academic support for eligible students, but also enhance services, increase access to resources, and establish partnerships with campus and community agencies.”

Envisioning 2020 is our vision for the future of The University of Virginia’s College at Wise. It is our roadmap.

How it began The Envisioning 2020 has been in the works since the fall of 2010 when a committee comprised of 17 members from across the campus worked to draft the strategic plan.

The committee, which included teaching faculty, general faculty, staff and students, gathered input from public forums, historical data, and looked at ways peer colleges and universities measured up to UVa-Wise on a variety of levels. The plan also included meshing with higher education goals set by Virginia, including Top Jobs legislation that outlined the Commonwealth’s desire to increase the number of state residents who earn degrees.

Work on E2020 began during Chancellor David J. Prior’s tenure and resumed under the direction of Chancellor Donna P. Henry when she arrived in January 2013.

Under Chancellor Henry’s guidance, the plan was reworked to create a more aspirational, streamlined and thematically consistent document.

--Chancellor Donna P. Henry E2020 was shared in several public forums, which also included comment from students, faculty, staff and the community. Certain timelines, responsibilities for carrying out the plan’s goals and metrics to measure the progress were put in place as well.

The strategic plan was approved by the UVa-Wise College Board and is now up for approval by the University of Virginia’s Board of Visitors this fall.

“Envisioning 2020 is our vision for the future of The University of Virginia’s College at Wise,” Chancellor Henry said. “It is our roadmap.”

According to Chancellor Henry, UVa-Wise has matured and grown over the last 10 years as it continued in its service to the region.

“Our reputation and the success of our alumni are now drawing more students from throughout Virginia, the nation and the world,” she said.

“Our campus continues to grow with a new six-story library and the Winston Ely Health and Wellness Center under construction. Our software engineering, computer science, education and nursing programs are nationally accredited while our programs in the arts and sciences are also producing graduates who are ready for the workplace, military service or graduate study.”

UVa-Wise has positioned itself for future decades, she contends.

“We know that we have the will and the capacity to enhance and expand our academic programs, outreach and service, while providing students greater access and the essential components for success,” she said. “We have outlined four goals that we feel will put us on the right path for success, and we are ready to begin the journey.”

Any good roadmap begins with a commitment to get the traveler to the intended destination, but the map must be accurate and it must be properly followed. E2020 is no different.

THE ROADMAP UNFOLDS “The E2020 strategic plan is organized around four broad goals,” Provost Sanders Huguenin said. “These goals are designed to improve the College in the areas of academic quality, enrollment and student success, service to the region and financial vigor.”

The plan basically positions the College to offer excellent and individualized instruction both in general education and in academic majors. It emphasizes experiential learning, recruiting and retention of faculty, raising high standards, and creating targeted marketing and support for Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Health programs.

The College was founded in 1954 as a way to provide access to higher education and graduate students who would serve the region. E2020 emphasizes that commitment to the region by setting goals to improve public school outreach, increase economic development efforts, and promote gains in health and wellness for the region’s residents.

The final aspect to E2020 is to ensure the College has the necessary resources, both public and private, to thrive as an affordable and excellent liberal arts college.

In addition, E2020 includes plans to keep the College affordable and accessible to the region, while also building enrollment, retention and graduation rates.

GOAL ONE: ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE “The first goal is all about improving and maintaining academic excellence by building on what we do well,” Huguenin said. “Individual attention is something we do well at UVa-Wise. Our students work directly with faculty, and that does not happen in most larger colleges and universities.”

UVa-Wise recently had 18 students present research projects in regional academic conferences. Huguenin said UVa-Wise will build those numbers by emphasizing research.

“We’re looking at expanding our articulation agreements with our region’s community colleges to increase the marketing of our STEM-H programs,” Chancellor Henry added.

“Our nursing program recently had a 100 percent board pass rate by the 2013 graduates, and that is something we can market.”

Offering an online Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing program for working nurses is in the planning process. Using a private endowment fund, UVa-Wise is working to recruit a nursing faculty member who can help meet that goal.

“Every piece of research equipment on this campus is used by students,” he said. “That’s not the same at bigger institutions.”

Chancellor Henry and Provost Huguenin agree that undergraduate research is something UVa-Wise does well, and supporting that work is vital.

Pursuing state and private funds to purchase needed equipment is a key part of E2020.

Increasing the number of academic programs that have earned national accreditation is also a goal of E2020.

The software engineering, computer science, nursing and business programs are accredited, but work will begin to increase the number in the coming decade, including chemistry, business and programs in the visual and performing arts.

The plan points out that some programs at UVa-Wise have plenty of students, but some have room for growth. Some of the STEM-H programs have room for more students.

Other strategies to improve academic excellence and grow enrollment include a proposal to look at developing some master’s degree programs in certain areas such as education.

An ambitious strategy to pursue a program that would bring some of the best and brightest high school seniors to campus for a residential program that would allow them to complete a year of college during their last year of high school is also included in E2020.

UVa-Wise is pursuing funding for the program now.

Huguenin said UVa-Wise has the ability to facilitate and help students succeed by reaching out to K-12 pupils and teachers in the STEM-H areas through the College’s academic disciplines and the Center for Teaching Excellence.

“Students in high school often run out of courses to take in their senior year,” Huguenin said. “UVa-Wise could offer them the courses they need.”

Chancellor Henry said UVa-Wise will look at the student population, residential programs and housing to ensure that the College is doing what is best for its students and the region it serves. UVa-Wise has a commitment to the region and will look for programs that align well with the needs of Southwest Virginia.

“We want to help the region grow and develop,” she said. “There are opportunities to reach out to area businesses to see what the needs are, and that knowledge can help us develop our curriculum and provide a flavor to that curriculum. I’d like to see a focus on ecotourism and hospitality. I think that would serve the region well. We need to reach out to the businesses to see how we can respond to serve their needs.”

Faculty is a key component of E2020 as well. Recruiting and retaining an excellent and diverse faculty by offering competitive salaries and support packages would make UVaWise a first choice college for potential faculty.

“This has been a challenge for us,” Huguenin said. “We need to orient faculty to our area.”

“We have to be able to support them in their research,” Huguenin said.

Chancellor Henry said providing faculty with resources to continue their scholarly work, offering education enhancements for them to pursue their academic work, and providing the right equipment for research would help UVa-Wise meet this goal.

“Basically, we are looking at what we need to do to take care of our students and to help them succeed,” Huguenin said of the second goal.

Some strategies outlined in E2020 include recruiting students with diverse aptitudes, interests and cultural and ethnic backgrounds who show academic promise, and by encouraging faculty and alumni in the appropriate recruitment of students. Helping student-athletes pursue their educational goals while developing their leadership skills through athletic participation is also a top priority under the strategic plan.

E2020 sets the goal of increasing enrollment by 20 percent to 2,600 headcount.

“The goal is to grow to these numbers,” Chancellor Henry said. “We plan to set our tuition and fee increases to maximize student access.”

University President Teresa A. Sullivan presented a proposal to the UVa-Wise College Board in October that could boost enrollment as the population declines in Southwest Virginia. President Sullivan said the University always has many qualified applicants from Virginia who meet admission requirements but not enough space for those students to be admitted.

She suggested steering those students toward UVa-Wise with the prospect of transferring to the University after two years. She acknowledged that many of those students would likely remain in Wise by choice after they experience the quality education and student life at UVa-Wise. The UVa-Wise Board agreed with President Sullivan’s proposal and both institutions plan to develop a pilot project in the near future.

In terms of retention, UVa-Wise has measures in place to help students who are at risk by reaching out to them earlier in the academic year, offering innovative tutoring programs, improving advising and offering a robust summer session that offers courses that would allow students a chance to catch up on coursework.

E2020 proposes to deepen the College’s commitment to health, wellness, education and environmental and economic development.

In addition, UVa-Wise must create and execute a strategic communication and marketing plan that shows the College’s mission and its identity as a high quality public, liberal arts college by highlighting successes of faculty, students, staff and alumni. Investing in digital communication and expanding to new media markets, and targeting communication with specific groups are also vital.

“Revamping the website is costly, but we are looking at resources to get this done,” Chancellor Henry said.

Marketing the David J. Prior Convocation Center as a hub of visual and performing arts and NCAA Division II athletics is also a top priority under E2020. Sponsoring events and activities through the Office of Development and College Relations to forge strong relationships with alumni would also help UVa-Wise reach its goal, E2020 states.

Strengthening the endowment to enhance and provide stability for all the College’s services and functions on the academic and operational side is also part of the overall plan.

Creating a culture of excellence and achievement among UVa-Wise employees and to invest in, recognize and promote those who work to help the College fulfill its mission is a key component of E2020.

“Every institution needs a strategic plan,” Huguenin said. “It outlines what a college aims to be and what it aims to accomplish. It’s about being the best school we can be, and it is about building on our strengths.”

Chancellor Henry contends that a primary goal in E2020 is to build closer ties with the region, especially through public service and civic engagement.

UVa-Wise, she said, is on a compelling path, and E2020 will keep the College on course.

“By looking closely at our educational and operational processes and services, we have new opportunities to improve and excel, which is the UVaWise way,” she said.

Daniels is Volunteer of the Year

Sharon Daniels ’88, one of the College’s most tireless champions, was named the 2012-2013 Volunteer of the Year.

Daniels, an alumna, retiree and tremendous friend of UVa-Wise, received a hearty round of applause when the award was presented at the Benefactor’s Celebration in September. She is known throughout the region for her hard work as a volunteer at the College and in the community.

She attended classes part-time as she worked full-time at the College. She got to know many of the students and took time to mentor them and to support them in various endeavors.

“Sharon thirsted for knowledge and especially enjoyed the frequent discussions and debates between students, staff and faculty in the early days of the College,” Chancellor Donna P. Henry said.

Daniels began working at the College in 1962. She remained here for more than 35 years. During her tenure, Daniels worked in the library, dean’s office, and as coordinator of news and publications.

“Sharon’s work at the College didn’t end when she retired in 1995,” the chancellor said. “She has remained engaged in numerous organizations working to strengthen the mission of her alma mater.”

Daniels has served as a member and president of the Alumni Association’s Board of Directors, served as a member of the UVaWise College Board, the Twinleaf Society, and as a member of the Poor Farm Society’s Board of Managers.

“Her deep love of the College and its students has been demonstrated by her significant commitment to these organizations,” Henry said. “She also served for a number of years as alumni liaison to Pi Kappa Phi fraternity, now serving as a member of the Council of Advisors.”

Daniels, who is a columnist with the Coalfield Progress, is often found grilling burgers at student-alumni picnics and handing out t-shirts at the senior class tailgate party.

An educator’s legacy lives on The estate of Iloe Read Stallard was named the 2012-2013 Benefactor of the Year at the September Benefactor’s Celebration.

Chancellor Donna P. Henry called the late Iloe Read Stallard a dedicated member of the UVa-Wise family.

“Her service to our College and generous financial support continue to make a difference in the lives of our students, faculty, staff and citizens of our region,” Henry said. “I have heard so much about Iloe since arriving in Wise. I am sorry I did not have the opportunity to meet her.”

An educator, Stallard realized the importance of providing higher education opportunities for deserving students in the region. In 1990, she established a scholarship fund in honor and memory of her late husband Coach Burchell “Slew” Stallard. Many students have received scholarships from the fund.

“Iloe not only provided financial assistance for these students but felt it her duty to give them and their teammates a little coaching too,” Henry said. “Each year during baseball season, Stallard provided an impressive dinner for the team and ended the evening with a spirited pep talk, motivating our Cavaliers to do their very best.”

The chancellor said Stallard’s support was not limited to the Burchell Stallard Scholarship Fund.

“When she saw a worthy cause, Iloe was there to assist as she could,” Henry said. “She thought our students deserved the best and provided funding to renovate our baseball field to the state-of-theart facility we are all so proud of today. She took great satisfaction in seeing the Highland Cavaliers, area high school teams, and Little League teams and their families making good use of Slew Stallard Field.”

The chancellor recalled hearing how Stallard was thrilled when a former baseball player and his fiancé were married at home plate.

“Iloe used her unwavering belief in the importance of education to strongly encourage others to invest in UVa-Wise, just as she had done,” Henry added.

Stallard was instrumental in the establishment of the Delta Kappa Gamma Scholarship Fund and a scholarship in honor of her sister, Marjory Read Bishop.

“She was not shy about asking friends if they had taken care of their estate plans and then would challenge them to include the College in those plans if they hadn’t already done so,” Henry said.

Stallard, a member of the UVa-Wise Foundation Board, passed away in November 2010. The Iloe Read Stallard Endowment Fund will assist with the College’s greatest needs and will serve as an enduring tribute to her.

Homecoming 2013 Dread the Red Homecoming 2013 drew record numbers of alumni back to campus for a variety of activities.

Activities began with the campus staff door and/or bulletin board decorating contest where the IT Department and Office of Student Development emerged as victors.

The alumni art show in Gallery 121 in the Gilliam Center for the Arts had beautiful artwork and showpieces. Red and Gray Day glowed with Cavalier Pride as the Class of 1963 held its 50th reunion luncheon.

Students had an opportunity to hear successful UVa-Wise graduates talk about their careers at the Degrees of Success Alumni Career Panel. George Burgan ’89, Greg “Jake” Lawson ’88 and Rebecca Mullins ’86 gave insight and encouragement to the students, faculty and alumni in the audience.

The Meet the Cavs Pep Rally, co-sponsored by the Student Government Association, brought together students, faculty, alumni and the community for an evening of food, music and fun. The Silver Saber Spirit competition was as popular as ever as nearly a dozen student organizations participated in a Cavs Cheer-Off, Dance-Off and Boat Contest.

Homecoming morning started with a bang as the SGA Red and Gray 5K Run paced over 60 runners and one-mile walkers from all parts of the region. Participants toured campus taking in popular spots such as Crockett Hall, Leonard W. Sandridge Science Center to the Lawn by the Lake and pushing through the finish line at Carl Smith Stadium with the new scoreboard recording their time.

The Prior Center welcomed more than 40 alumni and their families to the Celebrating Women in Athletics reunion. A volleyball match was held, and it was followed by the Alumni Leaders in Action meeting in the Slemp Student Center.

A fun-filled afternoon at the Lawn by the Lake featured arts and crafts for children of all ages while alumni chatted with former classmates and professors about days gone by. Temporary tattoos sporting the UVa-Wise athletic logo “V” were popular along with sand art, foam door hanger decorating and games like bowling and hula-hooping kept everyone coming back for more. The picnic of hamburgers and hot dogs delighted everyone who came out for the Alumni Family Carnival and Picnic, a new tradition that continues to grow by leaps and bounds.

At halftime of the UVa-Wise vs. Union College football game, members of the 2013 Homecoming Court took the field along with Chancellor Donna P. Henry. Congratulations to 2013 Homecoming King Walter Mickey and Homecoming Queen Ashley Pannell. After the game, alumni and their guests joined together for the Alumni Dance at the Inn at Norton.

Wilkins named MEC Runner of the Week UVa-Wise men’s cross country runner Shaquon Wilkins was named Mountain East Conference runner of the week for the week of Sept. 22-29 for his performance at the Golden Eagle Invitational.

Wilkins won the event with a time of 19:26 in the 6K race, nearly 30 seconds ahead of the closest competitor.

Wilkins opened the season with a 25th place finish in the Montreat Invitational prior to finishing 11th at the Concord Invitational.

Wilkins’ first place finish at the Golden Eagle Invitational also propelled the Cavaliers to the team title.

James Long named MEC Player of the Week

UVa-Wise senior wide receiver James Long was among three winners for the inaugural Mountain East Conference Football Player of the Week award. Long was named Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance in the Cavaliers season opener against Campbell University.

Long, a senior from Roanoke Rapids, returned four kicks for 136 yards, including an 88-yard touchdown return, in UVa-Wise’s 56-21 loss at Campbell.

Long also recorded four catches for 116 yards on offense for the Cavs as his 252 total yards established a new career high for the senior.

Men’s Cross Country wins Golden Invitational The UVa-Wise men’s cross country team won the Golden Eagle Invitational race against some strong opposition. The leading four Cavalier runners battled closely with the three lead West Virginia Tech runners for the top spots in the 6K race.

Shaquon Wilkins broke clear from the pack early to win the race in 19:26. He was followed by the chase pack consisting of: second place Zack White (WVa Tech), third place Josh Willcuts (UVa-Wise, time 20:14), fourth place Matt Parker (UVa-Wise, time 20:25), fifth place Dominic Rich (WVa Tech), and sixth place John Donegan (UVaWise, time 20:28).

The other UVa-Wise runners contributed to the team victory through fighting for places in the main pack of runners. Christian Bresnock finishing 10th (22:12), Landry Mullins in 12th (22:49), and Israel Bolling 13th (23:12) were the remaining team finishers.

“We have great depth on this team, and even without freshmen standouts Will Young and Anthony Wallis, we still produced a strong team win,” coach Don Leech said.

Women’s Cross Country finishes second

UVa-Wise women’s cross country continued to post strong performances in their inaugural Mountain East Conference season, having reached second place for the second time in four races so far this year.

Against all MEC opposition, while running a 6K race on a challenging rolling course, the women proved tough and resilient to score a solid second place behind a powerful University of Charleston (W.Va.) team.

Willey Kourtney of Charleston ran away from everyone early and won by more than two minutes. However, Sarah Elbon battled for second the whole way with two Charleston runners, finally splitting the two on the final sprint for a third place finish in (27:05). Samantha Balthis broke away from the pack to post a strong sixth place finish in (28:28). Whitney Carico (12th in 29:37) and Megan Hilliard (13th in 29:59) both held steady through the extra distance to score crucial points. Emily Brock (18th, 30:39) and Madison Compton (20th, 31:18) also finished well for UVaWise.

“The team is getting more competitive every race, and we are beginning to get into our stride,” said Coach Don Leech. “As we develop more consistency from our runners we will become a team to reckon with.”

Career field goal record holder puts finishing touches on collegiate career As fall turns to winter and winter to spring, the sun will soon set on the career of one of the most successful place kickers in the history of the football program at UVa-Wise. Paul Melshen came to the College in the fall of 2010 after a stellar prep career at Granby High School in Norfolk, Va. Melshen was a four-year letterman at Granby in both football and soccer. He served as team captain for the soccer team as a junior and senior and was named team captain of the football team as a senior.

At the conclusion of his senior year in high school, Melshen knew where he wanted to play collegiately.

“I came to UVa-Wise because I liked the balance of athletics and education,” he said. “I had a sister (Helen Melshen ’11) who was already a student here. I was familiar with the campus, the athletic facilities, and I felt a good connection with the coaches as well as the football program.”

His impact on the football program was felt instantly in his freshman season. With the Cavaliers playing on the road against Kentucky Christian University, Melshen missed the team bus the morning of the game and was left in Wise. Fortunately for the kicker, he managed to find a ride to the game and play a key role in the contest. After being suspended for the first-half of the game, Melshen would be given a chance to make amends. With the game tied at 31, he was called on to attempt a game-winning field goal. The then-freshman nailed a 42-yard field goal to give UVa-Wise the victory in a game it once trailed by 10 points.

From that point forward, Melshen was called upon in critical situations, often providing the result the Cavs desired. He finished his freshman season with eight field goals, just 10 away from the career record of 18, which was held by Jay Withrow ’96 who played at UVa-Wise from 1993-96.

The eight field goals are also the second most by any Cavalier in a single season.

A year later, Melshen would connect on seven more field goals to draw within three of tying Withrow’s record. His on the field accolades landed him on the Honorable Mention All Mid-South East team at the conclusion of his sophomore campaign.

Entering his junior season, it was a matter of when the record would fall. Melshen would make one field goal in each of the season’s first two games to come within one of the mark. He would tie the record three weeks later on a 44-yard field goal against nationally-ranked Cumberland University in a game at Carl Smith Stadium. Melshen and Withrow would remain tied at 18 field goals until the final game of the 2012 season when UVa-Wise played host to Georgetown College. With the Cavs trailing 21-14, Head Coach Dewey Lusk sent Melshen onto the field to attempt a 41-yard field goal.

The field goal attempt was good giving Melshen sole possession of the record. He added a 26-yard field goal later in the game to conclude his first three seasons with 20 career field goals.

“Football is a team sport,” Melshen said. “Each team member is integral for the success of the kick, and the others on the field are there for the protection and success of the place kicking team.

I am absolutely honored to have attained this accomplishment, and I am proud to have been a part of the football program for the last four years.”

As a senior, the kicks kept coming. Through five games, Melshen has added four more field goals to his career total while having also made 11 extra points. The senior is having a career-year in kicking off by having already booted 11 touchbacks.

Off the field, he is putting the finishing touches on his business administration degree. Melshen is on pace to graduate this spring and is eager to gain experience outside the classroom in effort to narrow down his professional career path.

“I have gained lifelong friends both on and off the field during my time at UVa-Wise and I will never forget my experiences in Wise,” he said.

NEW TRADITIONS

A new Convocation tradition UVa-Wise established a new tradition this year for Fall Convocation when the entire campus was encouraged to walk together through Cavs’ Gap to the David J. Prior Convocation Center for the annual start of the new academic year.

Student groups, faculty and staff processed to the Prior Center to participate in Convocation 2013.

Each person received a special commemorative t-shirt. In addition, Chancellor Donna P. Henry started a Students attend Convocation 2013 new tradition by delivering a State-ofthe College address.

UVa-Wise is on a clear path toward greater vitality and distinction, and is fortunate that the region it serves is eager to keep the College moving forward in the spirit of mutual respect, integrity, stewardship and excellence, Chancellor Henry said.

In the address, Henry spoke of her first seven months at UVa-Wise and how her family has enjoyed becoming a part of Southwest Virginia and its culture. She also outlined many ongoing projects the College is undertaking to keep true to its educational mission.

“Convocation is also a good time to assess where we are as an institution as well as to look ahead to the coming year and beyond,” she said.

A large portion of Henry’s address was devoted to students and what they can expect during the new academic year. She welcomed the freshmen and transfer students to the UVa-Wise family, and outlined some changes to the upperclassmen.

“Opportunities in experiential learning are expanding at UVa-Wise,” she said. “Undergraduate research opportunities are available in every discipline, and are an outstanding way to extend what you learn in the classroom in the discovery of new knowledge or creative works guided by a faculty mentor.”

UVa-Wise has answered Virginia’s call for colleges to increase the number of students who earn degrees in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and health, she said.

The College continues to work hard to pursue national accreditation by the American Chemical Society for the chemistry program to add to the accredited STEM-H programs in software engineering, computer science and nursing.

Henry outlined upgrades to online education, academic enhancement funds for student experiences, lectures, positive changes in residence life, campus safety, food services, athletics and the College’s move toward NCAA Division II during her address.

The success of the Fulfilling the Dream campaign raised $67.7 million and helped put the College’s endowment ahead of all 26 institutions in the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges and better than some older and larger institutions in Virginia, she said.

Construction of a new six-story $37 million library and the Ely Health and Wellness Center are also ongoing and will change the campus in many ways, she said.

“This is an exciting time,” she said. “We do recognize that getting around campus will be more difficult, but we will do everything possible to help get you to where you need to be.”

She encouraged the students, faculty and staff to be good neighbors to the town of Wise and city of Norton by shopping at the many stores and patronizing area restaurants.

Henry concluded her address by saying UVa-Wise is on a compelling path.

“I am honored to be part of such a passionate community that believes in our mission as a public liberal arts institution,” she said.

Cavs start conference off on a sweet note On Sept. 7, the UVa-Wise women’s tennis hosted the first ever home Mountain East Conference match in school history, regardless of sport. To commemorate the event, Chancellor Donna P. Henry served as master of ceremonies while former tennis player Megan Buchannan served as honorary captain. In addition, attendees were given a t-shirt commemorating the inaugural MEC season along with “Cavalier Cookies.”

The host Cavaliers scored a 5-4 victory over visiting Shepherd University to record the first MEC victory in school history. In the match, UVa-Wise’s Rose Bennett won her first collegiate match with a 6-0, 6-1 win while Junetta Nuckels and Haley Thacker also posted individual wins in aiding the Cavs to victory.

The athletic department is providing free t-shirts and “Cavalier Cookies” for the first MEC home competition in each sport.

Athletic Department Honors Member of the AD Honor Roll At the first home football game of the 2013 season, the athletic department at UVa-Wise honored members of the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll for the 2012-2013 academic year. More than 75 student-athletes received the honor.

To be eligible for the award, the student-athlete must maintain at least a 3.0 grade point average and be in good standing with his or her athletic team and the College. Each of the 12 intercollegiate teams at UVa-Wise had multiple winners of the award. In addition, seven teams had five or more honorees. The football team had 17 student-athletes receive the honor and the softball team placed 11 student-athletes.

Women in athletics honored UVa-Wise welcomed more than 40 alumnae athletes back to campus for the Celebrating Women in Athletics event during Homecoming 2013.

The event was co-sponsored by the Athletic Department and the UVa-Wise Alumni Association and included former athletes that competed on teams for Clinch Valley College and UVa-Wise. According to an article by Jordan Childress for the Highland Cavalier, the first women’s sports team started in 1969 with volleyball. Basketball began soon after, followed by softball in 1970.

According to Childress’ article, women’s sports grew through the 1980s to a solid level today. The latest teams added include women’s golf and lacrosse.

Jefferson gets new home

The UVa-Wise campus witnessed an unusual spectacle on July 9 as Thomas Jefferson took a tour.

Due to library construction, the bronze six foot tall and five hundred pound replica was relocated from the Jefferson Plaza area to the Crockett Hall Sunken Garden.

Great care was taken to preserve and protect the statue during its afternoon journey.

It is the third of three produced by acclaimed sculptor Edward Hlavka and was a gift from friends and alumni of the University of Virginia. The statue commemorated the 50th anniversary of UVa-Wise in 2004.

Still cheering them on Kenneth Dotson was the College’s first male cheerleader in 1966. Almost 50 years later, he still has his Clinch Valley College cheerleader uniform, and it still fits.

Kenneth’s journey to become the first male cheerleader began when he was having lunch in the cafeteria with some of his buddies. A friend mentioned that cheerleader tryouts were happening the following week.

Dotson joked that he and his friends would give everyone a laugh if they showed up to try out. His friends agreed that it was a sound plan.

“When I later joked about it to other friends who had some cheerleader experience, they suggested that I actually go before the judges, and they volunteered to train me in a couple of cheers to help me not make a complete fool of myself,” Kenneth said.

He showed up at tryouts, but his friends and co-conspirators were nowhere to be found.

“I decided to go through with the tryouts by myself,” he said. “I was surprised when I was selected to join the squad.”

Kenneth said his trainers, Nancy Cantrell Flannary ’67and Linda Dale, worked with him on additional routines.

“It turned out to be a fun basketball season,” he said. “Sharing time with the cheerleaders provided many fond memories.”

Kenneth also announced the team players over the public address system at home games.

1992 Patricia Guill retired from the Maryland General Assembly as a legislative assistant in July. She loves to read and enjoys time with her three grandchildren. Her dissertation, “The Effects of School Resource Allocation on Student Achievement,” was a meta-analysis of extant research that was nominated for dissertation of the year at the School of Finance Symposium in 2014. Cassandra Sproles is the executive editor of the Torchbearer magazine at the University of Tennessee.

The magazine won gold in the Tennessee College Public Relations Association contest. She is also editor of Accolades, the magazine for the College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences, which won silver in the TCPRA contest and a special merit award at the CASE District III competition. Her feature story about Allan Benton’s famous country hams and bacon won silver at the TCPRA awards. Her husband, Steven Sproles ’00, is team leader of the social studies department for Virtual Virginia. He teaches AP Economics and in 2010 was one of three finalists for National Online Teacher of the Year. Their daughter, Kilmeny, is in the fourth grade and loves to sing. Recently, she had the great honor receiving singing advice from Mary Costa, the actress who voiced Princess Aurora in Disney’s Sleeping Beauty. In July, the Sproles family and fellow alum Roger Hagy ’05 traveled to Prince Edward Island, Canada—fulfilling one of Cassandra’s longtime dreams.

Fostering growth Larry McReynolds earned his Bachelor of Arts in Biology from The University of Virginia’s College at Wise in 1970, known then as Clinch Valley College, as part of the first class that earned bachelor’s degrees after the College became a four-year institution.

Upon graduation, the St. Paul, Va. resident began teaching at Coeburn High School in the science department. McReynolds moved toward the coal industry in 1973 and decided in 1988 to open Oliver Coal Sales. Oliver Coal Sales has flourished in the coal industry for the last quarter of a century.

Larry McReynolds ’70 In July 1994, McReynolds joined the Alumni Board as an elected full seat member. For more than 19 years, he has been an asset to both the Alumni Board and the campus community, serving on the Community Spring Swing, $elebration, Strategic Planning, Nominating, and the Miners’ Family Scholarship committees.

In 2009, he established the McReynolds Scholarship Fund to provide scholarships for students participating in intercollegiate athletic programs at UVa-Wise. In addition to the McReynolds Scholarship Fund, he has made significant gifts to the Miners’ Family Scholarship as well as occasional gifts to various scholarship funds in honor of or in memory of friends and colleagues.

In his free time, he collects mining items and Native American antiques, is an antique car enthusiast and an avid golfer. Also, he is involved in the American Chestnut Federation, Eastern Coal Council, Virginia Mining Association and the North Carolina Coal Institute.

During his term as president of the UVa-Wise Alumni Association, McReynolds set several initiatives such as working to strengthen connections between graduating seniors and the Alumni Association, to find pathways for students to become more involved in the Alumni Association and to foster involvement and growth of alumni in the surrounding area. McReynolds is known on campus and in the community for his relentless work ethic, philanthropy and his devotion to UVa-Wise and the Alumni Association.

In Memoriam Vickie T. Baker ’72 passed away on May 10, 2013. She retired from Dickenson County School system after teaching thirty-seven years at Ervinton Elementary School. Vickie was a member of the Clintwood Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband, Johnny Baker, her daughter, Amanda Baker.

Mitchell Lee Davis ’87 passed away on May 25, 2013. He is survived by his wife, Jayrine, and many loved ones.

David Wayne Fuller ’89 passed away on July 15, 2013. He spent his entire professional career in the banking industry. He was most recently Vice President and Portfolio Manager with Wells Fargo. He is survived by his partner, Jay Cheong, his parents, Linda and Carl Fuller, and many other family members.

Lois Ann Bradley ’90 passed away on April 26, 2013. She was a member at New Castlewood Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband, Felix Don Bradley, three sons, Doug, David, and Joel.

Missy E. Cox ’90 passed away on July 1, 2013. She was an employee of the Commonwealth of Virginia, and a caring and artistic person. She is survived by her husband, Carl Cox, her mother, Vernie Chester, daughter, Andrea Cox, and many other family members.

Renita E. Steffey ’93 passed away on July 13, 2013. She was a member of the ABATE of Virginia/ Hole in the Wall Chapter. She is survived by her husband, Frank Steffey, daughters, Denise and Crystal, and many other family members.

If so, a tribute gift will allow you to honor a special person while helping UVaWise improve the educational experiences of our students.

Tribute gifts are a thoughtful way to celebrate a birthday, wedding, anniversary, graduation or any special occasion. They also serve as a thoughtful expression of sympathy by honoring the memory of a friend or relative. Tributes or memorial gifts can honor someone you want to remember in a meaningful way, such as an alum, a favorite professor, a mentor, a colleague, a family member or a friend who has made an impact in your life.

Tribute gifts are made through the UVa-Wise Foundation with the donor receiving an acknowledgment and gift credit. Those being honored receive a letter notifying them of the gift. For memorial gifts, the nearest family member or members are notified of the thoughtful gift. The gift amount remains anonymous.

Keeneland

The UVa-Wise Alumni Association organized a successful and fun adventure to Keeneland racetrack on Oct 5. Nearly two dozen alumni and friends enjoyed a day at the horse track.

Many winning bets were placed as friends shared stories of their time on campus while enjoying the tasty racetrack food.

Those attending ended the evening with a nice dinner at DeSha’s, one of Lexington’s premier dining venues.

The Alumni Association plans to organize more group trips in the future, including a visit to Indianapolis to watch the Indiana Pacers take on the Brooklyn Nets on Feb. 1, 2014.

Alumni travel offers an occasion for UVa-Wise graduates of many generations to mingle together in a relaxing environment, which promotes networking opportunities and promotes the College’s exposure nationwide.
