Lanier Tech Marine Technology Program begins

By Pamela A. Keene Classes have begun for the Marine Engine Technology Diploma Program at Lanier Technical College. Hans Metz has been hired to direct the program and serve as the first instructor. Metz comes to Lanier Tech after more than 20 years in the marine business, most recently as service manager at Singleton Marine Group. “The program is up and running,” said Christian Tetzlaff, dean of the institution’s applied technology programs. “We’ve started classes this fall offering two courses and will be adding more advanced courses in the spring.” Those classes are MAET 1000, which teaches safety, marine fundamentals and precision measuring and MAET 1025, which focuses on marine engine fundamentals and servicing. “This program will be in high demand because of the shortage of marine engine technicians in our area and around the Southeast,” Tetzlaff said. “Students can enroll in this diploma program and complete their work in less than two years. Our program is very affordable and jobs in the marine engine technology industry are in demand.”

Lanier Tech’s Hans Metz works with students at the Marine Engine Technology Diploma Program.

The Lanier Tech Foundation has been working with representatives of the University Yacht Club’s UYC Maritime Foundation to create tuition assistance or scholarships for marine engineering technology students. “It’s been a labor of love for us and for the UYC Maritime Foundation to help students entering the program,” said Lauren Armour, vice president of institutional advancement at Lanier Tech. “We are very appreciative of their willingness to work with us to support this program.” In addition to eight credit hours of basic skills, that include Fundamentals of English, Interpersonal Relations and Foundations of Mathematics, students will complete 40 credit hours of

program-specific classes. The courses are offered at the new Hall County campus of Lanier Tech. Students will work in the new teaching lab with new equipment and engines. “The marine industry has been very supportive of our program,” Tetzlaff said. “We are one of the only non-profit public offerings in the United States.” The program has received support from several marine manufacturers, and area dealerships in the Atlanta area. “Overall, we have record enrollment at Lanier Tech this fall on all campuses and all programs with well over 4,600 students,” Tetzlaff said. “And we are hoping for a full enrollment in the Marine Engine Technology program by spring semester.”

Pirates Poker Run nets big winners: The kids By Pamela A. Keene The pirates of Lanier Charity Pokier Run netted big winners, from the competitors playing poker to the winner of a pair of Yamaha Wave Runners. But the real winners are the kids of Camp Sunshine, Camp Twin Lakes, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Lanier and the EdmonsonTelford Center. “We raised close to $150,000 this year,” said Barkley Geib, president of Lanier Partners, organizers of the Poker Run. “There was so much excitement at the Casino Night and awards ceremony, and everyone had a great time. I’m always so impressed that everyone realizes the event is all about raising money for the kids, and it really makes a difference.” Kevin Ryan of Buford won the pair of Yamaha Waverunners. He purchased 13 tickets online on July 4. “I guess 13 was his lucky number,” Geib said. “And all our winners this year are from Georgia.” The Natural Hand Winners, those who submitted the cards

they collected during the run, were Matt Arden of Loganville, first place; Tracy Hurd of Buford, second place; and Mark Beverwyk of Buford, third place. Purchased Hand Winners, who bought extra hands at the Casino Night, were Jon Russell of Sandy Springs, first place; Gregg Dunn of Gainesville, second place; and Matt Wilson of Hiram, third place. “All but one of the cash winners donated their money back to our charity,” Geib said. Winners of the AVC Stereo contest were Kim Chapman of Alpharetta, Supra SE550, first place; Ricky Lohr of Suwanee, Yeah Buoy, second place; and Rob Green, Centurion, third place. Catherine Allen of Gainesville on the boat Lady of the Lake won Best Dressed Crew. Shane Treadwell of Cumming on FunShip won Best Decorated Boat. Earl Thompson of Lawrenceville on Irish Pearl won Best Overall. The Pirates of Lanier Poker Run celebrated its 11th year this summer.

LAKE LANIER OLYMPIC PARK

Lengthy transition expected as city seeks new park leader

By Jane Harrison Robyn Lynch, who began a new position as Gainesville’s Tourism Director late last month, expects to continue many of the Lynch duties she held as Lake Lanier Olympic Park executive director during a transition process at the park. Lynch, who served as LLOP manager/executive director from July 1, 2017 until Aug. 26 this year, will stay on to oversee the Sept. 7 Hong Kong Atlanta Dragon Boat Festival, traditionally the largest event held at the park. City officials, preparing last month to take applications for the vacant park position, expect a lengthy transition period with Lynch mentoring the new hire. “We’re not in a rush. The main thing is to find the right person,” said Bryan Lackey, Gainesville

City Manager. The search team will include members of the Lanier Olympic Park Foundation (formerly Gainesville-Hall ’96) who have invested “a lot of sweat equity” into reviving activities at the former Olympic site. The 35.5 acre park, developed originally for canoe/kayak and rowing events in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, was recently annexed by the city. LLOP became a cityowned park in July and is managed by the Gainesville Parks & Recreation Department. Parks Department Director Kate Mattison will make the final selection on LLOP leadership. Lynch described her new job as hand-in-glove with her previous role at LLOP. “It’s an opportunity for me to promote all of Gainesville,” she said. Her work with regional, national and international teams and organizations bringing regattas and events to LLOP taught her “a lot of what people are looking for when they come to town,” she said.

Lackey said he expects Lynch will still “spend a lot of time at the park getting through dragon boat and even when the new person is hired.” He added the city would like to “keep the momentum going” at LLOP. Since the first LLOP manager, Morgan House, was hired in 2014, the park has expanded its culture to include more than the waters sports that created it. Wake board contests, concerts, Food Truck Fridays and the recent Corporate Olympics exemplify diversity at the lakeside venue. LLOP assistant manager James Watson said last month he is considering his future at the park. Lackey described Watson as “a key part of our team out there.” The city’s team at the park includes a full-time maintenance worker during the warm months, Lackey said. The maintenance staff has been observed making regular rounds at recent park events cleaning restrooms and emptying trash receptacles.

By Jane Harrison One of the most colorful, exotic, exciting and delicious events on Lake Lanier paddles into Lake Lanier Olympic Park Sept. 7 when the Hong Kong Atlanta Dragon Boat Festival hits the water and the fills the plaza. Some 80 teams will stroke fast and furiously in long boats on the Olympic channel while fun, food and Asian folk lore rock the grandstands. The event draws thousands for a celebration of cultural diversity

and teamwork. “We’ll follow the same basic format that everyone enjoys,” said festival founder and chairman Gene Hanratty, overseeing the 24th festival that has roots in ancient Chinese legend. “It’s a festival of culture,” he added, particularly the opening ceremony. Racing starts at 7:30 a.m. and breaks for the noon ceremony that features the traditional “Dance of the Dragon” and numerous dance and acrobatic acts by brightly

costumed performers from Laos, Cambodia, China, and other Asian countries. “We’ll have a full array of food in the food village,” Hanratty said. Asian cooks will fire up grills to serve up “very good, very fresh” morsels and meals, he said. The less adventurous Southern palate can get satiated on down home fare, like ribs and chicken. Most teams hail from the Atlanta area, Hanratty said, adding See Dragon, page 22

Inaugural Corporate Olympics a hit at Olympic park

By Alan Hope Poly Enterprises of Gainesville won the first Corporate Olympics at Lake Lanier Olympic Park last month. The company was tops in the 12-team field that ranged from real estate businesses to government agencies. Second place was Resource properties with third going to Gainesville Parks and Recreation. The event “exceeded our expectations” said Robyn Lynch, park manager. “All of the participants expressed to us that it was a unique and fun team-building experience.” The five-person teams went through the 13-stop obstacle course that included water balloon volleyball, beach ball relay,

hula hoop, tug of war, and a dunking booth. “Lake Lanier Olympic Park is committed to continuing to increase community programming and events and to make capital improvements to the park for the community to enjoy,” Lynch said. Following the competition, participants received awards and then took in Food Truck Friday at the venue.

A long, sad, complicated farewell to an old warhorse

16 LAKESIDE

People become attached to inanimate objects just like they become attached to pets. That’s how I felt about an aging Tartan 36 One Ton racing sailboat which I acquired about 35 years ago. I named her “Shadowfax” after Gandalf’s horse in “The Lord of the Rings.” She was a beauty, built for Charlie Britton, the president of Tartan Yachts at the time. She was actually the prototype for the Tartan 34, 35 and 40. This was an era before they knew how strong fiberglass was, so she was extremely heavy by modern standards, having more weight in her lead keel than most boats her size. Like most One Ton Class racers of her time, she required a large crew, usually about 12, to race her and a minimum of four even to get the sails down. If the enormous jib was not rolled up properly, it wouldn’t fit in the sail bag and therefore wouldn’t fit through the hatch to the sail locker. I sailed her all up and down the East Coast from Maine to the Chesapeake and for the last 25 years or so on Lake Lanier. Now that my kids are grown and moved away it’s hard to find

enough people to crew her, consequently my wife and I did not go out on the lake as much as we’d like. I solved the problem by buying a 32-foot Bruce Roberts ketch with roller furling jibs and lazy jacks that I can easily single hand. This created another problem of having two boats. Very few people can afford one boat. Almost no one can afford two. Regrettably, I put her up for sale (read “adoption”) and after two years of lowering the price every month she still sat there in her slip. I even tried to donate her to the Junior Sailing program at the sailing club, but they wouldn’t take her. The only offer I got was from some foreign sounding gentleman who “inadvertently” sent me a check for $2,000 over the price, telling me to pay the extra money to the boat hauler in cash. Now I may be crazy but I’m not

stupid! I simply sent the check back and never heard from him again. Finally, at the end of the year, I reluctantly donated her to “Boat Angels” who would sell her on eBay and use the money to build orphanages in Africa. I kept track of the bidding and with six hours to go, the top bid was $205! I told a buddy who wanted the engine and he bought her for $405! I figured if anyone was going to cut her up it should be me, so we hauled her out of the water and plucked the engine out. He then sold her back to me for a dollar and sadly, I began the job of dismembering her, salvaging all the teak, hardware, sails rigging and anything else of use. Each afternoon I would take my trailer load of scrap up to the county landfill where they knew me by name. Finally, I got down to the lead keel. I estimated it weighed in the neighborhood of 5,000 pounds. It was bolted on with about a dozen one and a quarter inch bronze bolts, going thru eight inches of fiberglass in the keelson. I rented a gasoline powered circular saw like the highway department uses to cut up concrete roadways.

Heat was the word for August

20 LAKESIDE

August was certainly a month for the record books. Day after day of 90 degree heat. It not only been hot in north Georgia, but much of the Southeast. Records were being set from Florida to Texas and east to the Carolinas. El Nino is over and there is no longer any wind shear to rip apart the tropical waves coming out of west Africa into the Atlantic. In addition to above average air temperatures, ocean waters are also getting hot, very hot. I was in Charleston, S.C. a few weeks ago. The surf temperature was 92 degrees. I have been going to Charleston for the past 10 summers and the surf temperature was as warm as I have ever seen it. In addition, when the tide went out, there were the usual tidal pools. They are about a foot deep or less. When I walked into the tidal pool water it was hot. It felt like I was walking into a hot tub! That was not the only odd occurrence. Near Mount Pleasant, a suburb of Charleston, there is a beautiful creek where adults and kids swim and paddleboard. The third weekend in August was very typical with many enjoying the creek. That is, until an eight foot bull shark was caught by a fisherman, fishing for redfish. I bet you can guess the reaction from area residents! This is the first time a man-eater was found in one of the Charleston area creeks. People kept saying it must be climate change. Regardless, I can tell you the ocean is very warm. This does not bode well for

those of us who live in the Southeast as we approach the peak of the Glenn Atlantic hurricane seaBurns son. If you follow the weather, you have no doubt seen the updated Lanier NOAA Hurricane OutOutlook look. It calls for an above average number of hurricanes. In an average season, there are 12 named storms. Of those names storms, six will become hurricanes and two to three will become major hurricanes. The peak of the Atlantic hurricane season is this month. September 10-15 is a bad time to be going on a cruise in the Caribbean! It may be doubly bad because NOAA is calling for a very active season. Its projection is nine to 15 named storms. Four to eight will become hurricanes with two to four becoming major hurricanes. A major hurricane is considered to be a Cat 3,4, or 5 with winds greater than 111 mph. NOAA says it is 70 percent confident it will happen. We all know hurricanes can have a major impact on Georgia. We all remember the devastation around the lake with Hurricane Opal. Needless to say, here in Severe Weather Center 2, we will be watching intently, the tropical waves as they roll off the west coast of Africa into the Atlantic this month. In October however, the primary storm formation area will be the Gulf of Mexico. 2019 Atlantic hurricane season names These are the names of tropical storms or hurricanes should they form in the Atlantic Ocean in 2019: Andrea, Barry,

that more and more teams from the Gainesville area will participate. The event draws numerous teams from corporate Atlanta, including UPS and AT&T. Hanratty noted that for the first time, the local Coca-Cola bottler is a sponsor and Coke’s world headquarters will put a team on the water. The competition takes place in 39-foot boats outfitted with plastic dragon heads and tails and manned by 18-20 paddlers, a drummer and steerer. The sport has grown in popularity since 1976, when Hong Kong introduced the first international races. The races have gained popularity in the U.S. as businesses, clubs, and organizations look to the sport to build teamwork and fitness. The Lanier Canoe & Kayak Club organizes dragon boat training sessions and hosts its own events at various times during the year, including one coming up Oct. 12. The international sanctioning body for canoe/kayak held its world championship at LLOP in 2018. The local club will not put competitors on board this year,

nor is it involved in putting on the races, except for providing steerers and coaches. Hanratty said that even without LCKC’s direct involvement, “we’re in great shape.” “The people of Gainesville stand solidly behind this event. I’m confident we’ll have all the volunteers we need,” he said. “It takes 180 people to fill a whole bunch of positions. Many come back to help in critical positions for years.” Two long time LCKC members are on Hanratty’s festival staff. Past LCKC president Tracy Barth is festival deputy director. Long time LCKC coach Jim O’Dell is the event’s head coach and practice director. LLOP executive director

Robyn Lynch, who began work as Gainesville’s tourism director Aug. 26, is expected to continue work at the venue through the festival and beyond. “Dragon boat is an economic driver for our community … this event is important to our community,” Lynch said. She added she expected the festival to run every bit as smooth as it has for 15 years at LLOP. Check out the website www.dragonboatatlanta.com for schedule and results. Dragon Boat Parking: Offsite parking is at New Haven Church, 615 White Sulfur Rd, Gainesville. Shuttles start at 6:30 a.m. $2 per person. Parking at LLOP is $10.

Taste of Gainesville postponed

Taste of Gainesville, the popular September dining event at Lake Lanier Olympic Park, has been postponed to the spring and will be run by LLOP staff and not the Lake Lanier Rowing Club going forward, according to Robyn Lunch, former LLOP executive director. ENJOY SAFE BOATING ON THE LAKE!

By Pamela A. Keene Don’t call them fenders around Cal Miller. As principal of the Big Bumper Company, he knows the difference. “Most bumpers are fenders, but fenders are not bumpers,” Miller said. “It isn’t just a difference in terminology; all but one brand of fenders are made of hard plastic and are smaller, usually not more than 4 to 6 inches in diameter, although there are larger fenders on the market. Our bumpers are made of heavy bean bag material and are much larger, either 18 or 24 inches in diameter.” Big Bumper Company’s bumpers come in four lengths – 2 feet, 4 feet, 6 feet and 12 feet. They can be used by positing them vertically between boats and docks or horizontally. “Designed to help project boats at docks or rafted up, Big Bumpers do a lot more to protect boats, no matter the hull configurations or the size of the boat,” he said. “This is definitely not a onesize-fits-all product.” The company’s products have

been used commercially in large marinas, but Miller said that he is focusing on marketing them to individual boat owners for personal use. The bumpers, which come in black or gray, can be inflated with a 12-volt pump. They can be quickly deflated for on-board storage when not in use. The product was developed in the Southeast. It’s being used in Australia, Canada and 23 states in the US. “We’ve only been in business

The following is the second installment of a series focusing on the human senses of hearing, sight, touch, awareness, and balance and how they relate to safe boating. A “lookout” is mandatory, according to maritime collision avoidance regulations also known as the Rules of the Road. The rule states: “Every vessel shall at all times maintain a proper lookout by sight and hearing as well as by all available means appropriate in the prevailing circumstances and conditions so as to make a full appraisal of the situation and of the risk of collision.” There’s a lot of substance in that small paragraph. What exactly is a Lookout and how is it effectively used to help you avoid an incident? That depends on a multitude of factors, one of initial importance is the location where you are operating the vessel. Lakes are only one of a numerous marine environments, each having its own characteristics. What all safe navigation operations have in common is a dedicated lookout, one that is not encumbered by interference, noise, distractions, and other in-

Friends paddleboard length of Lanier in less than 12 hours

Shore Lines

W

From the fascinating to the remarkable, Lake Lanier harbors many personalities and places along its shores. Lakeside presents “Shore Lines” – stories about people who live, work and play around the lake and the places that make the area special.

By Pamela A. Keene hat started out as a wild hair five years ago finally came to pass last month. Chris Wakefield led a pack of friends on a one-day stand-up paddleboard adventure from north of Lake Lanier Olympic Park to the Buford Dam in late July. “As far back as five years ago a couple of us were sitting around talking about what it would be like to paddleboard the lake from our houses to Port Royale, but we just kept talking about it,” said Wakefield, who is also an avid water-sports athlete and owns The Outdoor Lights. “I did that paddle in June 2015, but then, about the first or second week of July this year, Mike Crawford just said ‘Let’s paddleboard the whole lake. About five of us jumped on the idea and less than 10 days later, that’s what we did.” On July 23, at 7:04 a.m., five guys set out from Lake Lanier Olympic Park to paddleboard down the lake – Hub Talbot, Hans Daniels, Mike Crawford, Mark Bullock and Wakefield. The group, three from Forsyth County and two from Hall, were determined to complete the challenge. Crawford’s 17-year-old son Carmichael provided support first on a jet ski and later by boat for most of the trip. “It was Hans’ 40th birthday and he said he needed to do

something extraordinary that day, and this was it,” Wakefield said. “The rest of us were just as committed. We had a game plan, including where we’d eat lunch and what we’d do if someone needed to drop out.” Lunch at ‘Halfway Island’ All of them started out great guns, paddling standing up. The sky was overcast with little breeze and light rain as they made their way southwest. By 12:06 they were at their agreed-upon lunch stop, an island they dubbed “Halfway Island” because it was about halfway between their starting point and the dam. “You could touch the water from both the Chattahoochee and the Chestatee, so it was a good choice.” Each had packed a lunch, with protein bars, pickle juice to help avoid cramps, sandwich meat and bread. They made sandwiches on the beach. They also carried plenty of water, laced with carb powder for the trip. “Then a little while later, we decided to have a second lunch, so we paddled over to Port Royale and ate again at Pelican Pete’s,” he said. “By that time we were hungry again, and we needed to pack on lots of carbs for energy.” Then it was off again. By this time, the sun had broken through the clouds. “The wind picked up, too, right when we turned the corner,” Wakefield said. “We could

see Three Sisters Islands, and it was really blowing hard, almost a headwind, and taking us to one side. It made it really tough to paddle.” They decided to get on their knees and go for a more aerodynamic profiles. “At one point it was surely blowing 18,” he said. “The winds were something we hadn’t really anticipated. And the lake had really big rollers. Somewhere in all that wind, one of the guys said that we really ought to have done this trip kiteboarding.” Movie crew cheered But still they persevered. Each paddler kept his PFD close and various friends checked in with them from their boats, just in case. In front of Cocktail Cove, they paddled past a movie crew in boats, who at first asked the paddlers if they needed any help. Once they told the filmmakers their mission, the production folks cheered them on, then went back to work. By the time they reached the dam at around 6:30, they were all tired, but not exhausted. “I will say this: we were all really hungry,” Wakefield said. They had left a truck at Crawford’s father’s home near the dam so they could get back to their cars at Lake Lanier Olympic Park. “As soon as we got back, we all went out to Blue Fin for sushi and to talk about the day.” They averaged 2.9 miles per hour over the course of 11 hours and 20 minutes. “I only fell one time, and that’s PHOTO BY CHRIS WAKEFIELD when we met with all those heavy Paddlers Hub Talbot, Mike Crawford, Hans Daniel and Mark Bullock get- waves and wind,” Wakefield said. ting ready to leave Clarks Bridge boat ramp at Lake Lanier Olympic “I could see the dam. guys did really well. We traveled as a pack and always kept our eyes on each other.” In the last quarter-mile, Crawford picked up his sister’s three kids, ages 6, 9 and 10, and they rode with him. “It was really fun to have them along and they had a great time,” Crawford said. They originally planned to break the trip into two days, not having a good gauge of how long it would take. They had several safety discussions before embarking, including bringing PFDs, filing a float plan and staying in touch with their cellphones kept in waterproof bags. “Our exit plan, if someone felt they had to drop out from being tired or not feeling well, was to paddle to the nearest dock and call Uber or Lyft for a ride back to the cars,” he said. “You know,

it never really became an issue, but better to have a plan and not need it, right?” Next year for charity When word got around about their trip, other people said they wished they’d participated. One of the paddleboarders said that they should have done this trip to raise money for charity. Well, that’s what the group intends to do next year. “We want to create a formal event to raise money for the Boys Lodge in Cumming and open it up to the public next year,” Wakefield said. “Most of us were in pretty good shape going into this and other than being tired the next day, it was an amazing adventure.” Wakefield said that people interested in paddle boarding with the group in 2020 should contact him at barefoot2012@me.com.

By Jane Harrison The adventure racer who in June paddled the entire outer shoreline of Lake Lanier in six days is heading for an even more daunting journey this month. Josh Forester called his “Lanier Lap” a Forester major milestone leading to the Eco Challenge in Fiji. Deemed “the toughest race in the world,” the expedition runs Sept.10-21 and will air on Amazon TV in 2020. It is being produced by Mark Burnett, originator/producer of Survivor on CBS.

Forester’s four-person squad, US Military, will be among 50 teams covering 350 miles in the non-stop, 24-hour a day, 11-day contest of strength, endurance and skill. According to the Eco Challenge website, the route may include jungle trekking, outrigger paddling, rope climbing, rappelling, pack rafting, paddle boarding, and sailing. Participants must leave their electronics at home and navigate only with a map and compass. Forester, 37, said he fell into “grand awe and wonder” watching Eco Challenge on the Discovery Channel as a teenager 20 years ago. When he learned last

year the event was being revived, he “dropped everything” to train for the “once in a lifetime opportunity” to race it. He spoke with Lakeside News prior to his Sept. 3 departure for Fiji. Here’s a brief synopsis of that interview, edited and paraphrased. Q: How was recovery from the Lanier Lap? Forester: It took longer than I expected. I was off the water six weeks and moved on to mountain biking, hiking, anything that didn’t require my shoulders and arms. My fingertips in my left hand are still numb. Q: What is the greatest strength you bring to your team? Forester: Organization. We are all very strong individuals. Half the battle is getting to the starting line. The logistics of acquiring the gear, shipping it to Fiji, flights, training are astounding. Q: What will be most challenging for you? Forester: Personally, I run hottest on the team, so hydration is paramount. It’s in a native island environment and will require ocean navigation where there’s no land in sight. I’m intimidated by that. This is my first experience of this nature. None of us is tops at nautical navigation. Q: It looks really dangerous. Video trailers of past Eco Challenges show par-

ticipants being dragged by camels, diving off cliffs, slipping on slopes, biking on high ridges, and strapped to stretchers and being helicoptered off. What about the risks? Forester: There are always risks in the wilderness. Actually, there are more risks involved sitting on a couch and not exercising or getting in a car. We have an ER doctor on our team, plus wilderness first responders. Part of the risk is having to accept the fact that such an endeavor may include traumatic wounds, broken bones, and emergency situations in water. The Eco Challenge crew provides medical services and helicopter transport for emergency situations. Q: What about nutrition? They’ll be no Lanier Dwellers hauling cupcakes and steaks out to you. Forester: (Laughs). There are import restrictions on food. We really had to plan ahead. Q: The top prize in Survivor is $1 million. The Eco Challenge winning team splits $100,000. It looks a lot harder than Survivor. What do you say to that? Forester: (Laughs) Stakes are always a little higher in (social) politics. Q: When will we know the results? Forester: It depends on the producers’ gag order. I imagine they’ll keep it under lock and key until 2020.

History, nature meet at Cades Cove in the Smoky Mountains

A spontaneous visit that I made into the Tennessee side of the Great Smoky Mountains more than 40 years ago involved a trek through the unforgettable Cades Cove, which has kept me dreaming about a return for all this time. Recently, I fulfilled those beautiful reveries and returned to the natural beauty and historical setting of one of the most picturesque places in America. In the language of folks from the Smoky Mountains, a “cove” is basically a flat valley surrounded by mountains. Cades Cove is that description and so much more with the best opportunities for wildlife viewing in the Smoky Mountains including white-tailed deer, elk, black bear, coyote, ground hog, wild turkey, raccoon, skunk and other animals. Artifacts from the past prove that for hundreds of years Cherokee Indians had hunted in the verdant valleys of what is now known as Cades Cove. Nevertheless, archeologists were never able to produce evidence of any major Indian settlements in the area. The first Europeans began settling in the cove sometime between 1818 and 1821, and by 1830 the population had grown to nearly 300. Because so much of this early history was preserved, Cades Cove now offers the widest variety of historic buildings in any part of the Smoky Mountains National Park. The only way to really enjoy all of the natural beauty, history and wildlife is the Cades Cove Loop that winds for 11 miles through this special section of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It is a picturesque drive with a backdrop of the blue-tinted mountain peaks and lush, green countryside. When traveling the scenic loop road, take the time to

get out and visit the restored buildings that include three churches, log homes, cantilevered barns and a working mill. You can access the Cades Cove Loop from Laurel Creek Road, Parson Branch Road or Rich Mountain Road ... the latter two roads are closed during winter. The Loop is a one-way (onelane) paved road that takes approximately two to four hours to traverse. Because it’s a singlelane road, be prepared to stop frequently because those in front might have encountered a bear or other local wildlife. This slow pace makes it easy for everyone to enjoy the amazing mountain landscapes, wildflower meadows and diverse wildlife. The gently winding road offers many places to stop, park and stretch your legs while taking in the scenery. Halfway through the Loop, make a point to stop at the visitors center to take photos of many restored buildings. From early May through late September, only bicycle and foot traffic are allowed on the Cades Cove Loop until 10 a.m. on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Vehicles can enter on Wednesdays and Saturdays after 10 a.m. Many problems caused by bad management during the early

days of Cades Cove have now been rectified. Ditches are now being plugged and wetlands restored for all wild creatures. Native wildflowers and grasses have been re-established from nurseries built in Cades Cove to preserve the true character of this gem of nature. Cades Cove is the perfect way to see a picturesque mountain setting complete with wildlife and history. There are some amazing locations to have a picnic lunch and just take in the views. This area of the Great Smoky Mountains should be a prime destination on every person’s travel plans! For more information visit www.smokymountains.com/park/ cades-cove. Ah, smell the roses! Reap the rewards into fall 42 LAKESIDE

September 2019

Whether you grow Knockouts, Hybrid Tea roses or something in between, despite this summer’s heat you can have beautiful blossoms way into October. Here’s the key: water, water, water. Of course there’s more to growing pretty roses, but watering regularly and deeply is the first step. Here in Northeast Georgia, especially with our extended dry spells between soaking rains, most roses will require deep watering at least twice a week. That means more than holding a hose on them for five minutes each and much more than running your inground irrigation system on them for 30 minutes. Roses need about five gallons of water per week at least, particularly when the weather is hovering between 85 and 95 degrees. First, determine how long it will take your outside hose to fill a 5gallon bucket – you know, the big painters buckets you can from box retailers. Now you’ll know how much time to spend individually watering each bush. I’ve found that using an oscillating sprinkler attached to the end of a garden hose is even better than individual watering. If

Regular watering helps reAppeal duced blossom-end rot on our tomatoes and evens out the dry then wet conditions that can also weaken plants, making them more susceptible to disease. n MORE INFO: Email: Roses are particular about pam@pamelakeene.com what time of day they are watered. blooms and the first couple of sets of leaves. If you’re deadheading Knockouts, cut several inches below the bloom clusters. For Hybrid Teas, experts suggest cutting the stem just above the first five-leaf leaf. This is not necessary. New growth will sprout just below your cut; to encourage stronger regrowth and bloom, you can cut as much as eight to 10 inches below the dead bloom. Some of my rose bushes are as tall as 6 feet. To keep them under control, deadheading becomes a pruning. Discard deadheads and

pruned branches to avoid encouraging disease. Heavy feeders Roses are heavy feeders. Feeding them regularly promotes vigorous growth and larger, more prolific blossoms. A slow-release fertilizer, like Osmocote, can feed your roses for several months, but you’ll get better results applying it early in the season. A September feeding of Espoma Rose-tone or Miracle Gro using a hose-end sprayer will give your plants a boost. Be sure to follow the label instructions and don’t overfeed. This will further stress the plants. A word about deer Electric fence. It’s not pretty to surround your prize roses with an electric fence, but it has been my best solution for avoiding deer damage. For other plants, I use Liquid Fence or Hinder, sprayed liberally about every 10 days to two weeks for two to three applications. Enjoy your roses for the rest of the season. They require a bit of work and attention, but the rewards are great. Pamela A. Keene is senior writer for Lakeside News and a Hall County Master Gardener.

Georgia tourism, film pioneer, Lanier resident Ed Spivia passes away

By Pamela A. Keene He laid the foundations of the tourism and film industry in Georgia as far back as the late 1960s, and his influence is still felt across the country. On July 29, Lake Lanier resident Ed Spivia passed away at his home with his family by his side, after a long battle with Lewy Body Dementia. “I have been so proud of Ed and the recognition he’s been getting,” said his wife of 17 years, Barbara, who with him founded the original Lakewood Antiques Market in Atlanta and the Lakewood 400 Antique Market in Cumming. Spivia’s sons Rhett and Greg recently became partners in the business. “Ed loved Georgia with his whole heart and was so committed to the state.” A graduate of Young Harris College, he moved to Atlanta in 1965 to work at WGST Radio. Three years later he joined the Georgia Department of Industry and Trade, now the Georgia Department of Economic Development, where he then developed the Georgia Film Commission under then-Governor Jimmy Carter. The commission helped attract more than 200 films to the

Ed and his wife Barbara at Lake Lanier.

state over the next decade, including “Smokey and the Bandit,” “The Longest Yard” and the “The Big Chill.” President Carter tapped Spivia to lead the Georgia Tourism Division and during his seven years there, Spivia and the division grew tourism from 27th in the country to 7th, second in the Southeast only to Florida. In 1983, Spivia was asked by former Macon Mayor Buck Melton and Macon businessman Ben Porter to lead their business Filmworks USA, bringing even more films to Georgia. He also

helped create the Lakewood Antiques Market on the same site and worked with Universal Studios to build Lakewood Amphitheater. Spivia and Barbara, working with Diane Dominick, moved the market to Cumming. Then-Governor Sonny Perdue asked Spivia to be part of the committee that developed incentives for filmmakers to choose Georgia. Over his career, he received numerous awards and recognitions, including the Georgia Production Part-

nership’s recognition for “his incomparable leadership and support of the Georgia Entertainment Industry” in 2010. In 2017, he received the Georgia Entertainment Gala & Awards “Outstanding Contribution to the Georgia Entertainment Industry” award. “In spite of his highly touted contributions to Georgia’s economy and culture, he always claimed that this finest accomplishments were his three children, his marriage to Barbara and their blended family,” his obitu-

ary read. “He loved nothing more than spending time with them, especially on Lake Lanier,” it continued. “Ed was really proud of Georgia today, in the tourism, music and movie industry,” Barbara said. “We have simply been overwhelmed by the outpouring from so many people. I know he’s going to live on through all the things that he changes and brought to the state. And he did it all with absolutely nothing to gain; he just loved Georgia.”

By Pamela A. Keene Swim Across America-Atlanta returns to Lanier Islands September 28 to raise money and awareness for the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. In preparation for the event, a practice session/open water clinic will be offered on Sunday, Sept. 15, at Lanier Islands. The cost is $40. This year, more than 15 Olympians are expected to swim at Lanier and sign autographs for the more than 600

swimmers that are expected for the event. Add to that 200-plus volunteers and another 250 or so spectators and this event has become one of the largest in the Swim Across America annual campaign. In the past seven years, Swim Across America-Atlanta has raised more than $1.75 million. Registered swimmers are asked to raise money by first creating a fundraising page through the Participant Center on the website, which also includes tips and information about how to reach out

to friends. “Each year, we set our sights on a big fundraising goal, with the hope of creating an even bigger splash for cancer research,” said Alison Millsaps, SAA – Atlanta event director. “We ask each registered swimmer to commit to a fundraising minimum, but because of their passion for the cause, many of our swimmers more than surpass their numbers.” For more information, to register, volunteer or make a donation, visit their website at www.swimacrossamerica.org.

Most people just focus on the main area of their home: the living room and kitchen. But why not think outside the box to other areas that could be used for gathering, like outdoor space. Fall is the perfect time of year to utilize outdoor space for entertaining. Maybe you have an old deck or patio that is underutilized ... consider updating the space to make it more inviting. By Pamela A. Keene For nearly a decade, the UYC Maritime Foundation has awarded scholarships to high school students in Hall County. “Typically we have four to six recipients each year, given to college-bound high-school seniors at Flowery Branch High School,” said Liz Rogers, UYC Maritime Foundation board member who served on the review committee. “These scholarships, given through the foundation, have been generously funded by the Schoff Foundation and its administrator long-time University Yacht Club member Rich Mason.” Recently, the organization presented six scholarships to 2019 graduates, expanding the program to include West Hall High School and providing additional funds for two former recipients. Students receiving first-time UYC Maritime Foundation scholarships are West Hall graduates Hunter Crawford, who currently works at West Marine and will be attending Georgia Southern University, and Reynaldo Santana, who works at University Yacht Club’s dining room and will be attending University of North Georgia/Gainesville. Flowery Branch graduating seniors Megan Lusco, who will be attending the University of Georgia, and Trey Small, who is entering Georgia Institute of Technology, also received scholarships.

“We always keep in touch with our recipients from previous years to see how they are doing in school,” Rogers said. “And we decided this year to award additional scholarships to two former recipients.” Kennesaw State University sophomore Benjamin Beebe, who received funding last year, was given a scholarship. He is studying computer science. Brenau University rising senior Lauren Hill, who is in the fine arts program and is a volunteer at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, received scholarship funding for a fourth year. This year, the committee received 16 applications. Guidelines include that they must attend either Flowery Branch High School or West Hall High School and plan to attend an in-state college or university. They are individually interviewed by the UYC Maritime Foundation’s selection committee. “Many of our applicants are often working three and four jobs to pay for their college,” Rogers said. “We consider a number of factors when making our selections, looking for well-rounded students, and we work with their guidance counselors and teachers to learn more about them. All of these students are most deserving, and we are honored to be able to assist with their college education.”

Oral argument set in Florida vs Georgia water lawsuit

By Jane Harrison The special master’s fourmonth delay in approving a faceto-face showdown between water war parties did not surprise some followers of Fla. V. Ga. No. 142 Original. Wading through the volume of evidence submitted since Florida filed suit in 2013 would require months of review, especially for one whose decisions will impact long term relationships between states, say water law experts familiar with the Kelly case. They expect Special Master Paul J. Kelly, Jr. to seek answers to specific questions during oral argument Dec. 16 and possibly render his report within months. On July 29, Kelly granted Florida’s March 22 request to plead its case before he makes recommendations to the Supreme Court. Oral argument is set for 10 a.m. in Albuquerque, N.M, about an hour’s drive from the federal courtroom where Kelly serves as a senior judge in the U.S. 10th Circuit Court of Appeals. Kelly

allotted each party 45 minutes, with Florida permitted extra time for rebuttal. Florida seeks federal apportionment of water in the Apalachicola, Chattahoochee, Flint river basin. It also aims to limit Georgia water consumption. The complaint alleges that Georgia hoards water on the Chattahoochee and Flint and causes ecological and environmental harm across the state line. Lake Lanier is the largest reservoir on the rivers regulated by U.S. Army Corps dams. Kelly’s delay in responding to Florida’s request “frankly doesn’t surprise me, particularly,” said attorney John B. Draper, who for 36 years has represented states in environmental disputes. The Santa Fe lawyer has an office across the street from Kelly’s and knew Ralph Lancaster, Jr., the initial special master in Fla. V. Ga. “There’s a pretty big record to deal with and make decisions on,” Draper said. “Even for an experienced judge like Judge Kelly, there’s a lot to go through even to determine if he needs oral argument.”

Draper’s experience with special masters and Supreme Court cases includes more than 300 trial days, mostly accrued in Kansas V. Colorado, a 22-year legal battle over water in the Arkansas River with roots near the turn of the 20th century. “(Kelly) has obviously decided having access to the attorneys would be helpful, probably pertaining to some specific questions for each side to be sure he’s understanding their positions correctly,” Draper said. Special masters “are a special breed” in U.S. legal history, he said. The Supreme Court is responsible for deciding facts in disputes between states. Since the early 20th century, special masters have acted like trial judges, making recommendations on how justices might rule. In Fla.-Ga., the former special master held a five-week trial in a Portland, Maine courtroom before giving justices his opinion. The Supreme Court remanded Lancaster’s Feb. 2017 recommendations and appointed Kelly in Aug. 2018. Lancaster had denied Florida’s claims based on his as-

Kiwanis Club hosts golf event at Islands

By Pamela A. Keene The North Gwinnett Kiwanis Club is hosting its annual Fall Golf Classic at Lanier Islands Legacy Golf Course on Tuesday, September 17. The tournament benefits students at area high schools who receive scholarships from the club. “We had an excellent turnout last year and hope to do so again,” said Cal Andrews, chair of this year’s event. “The students are always so appreciative of the scholarships and the Fall Classic is a good way to enjoy a round of golf while helping local students.” The format is four-man scramble with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. Registration and the practice range open at 8 a.m. Registration for the event is $560 per foursome until September 7; after that date, registration, if available, is $600 per foursome. Individual registration is $150

per player. It includes range balls, green fees, cart, breakfast and lunch, soft drinks, on-course contest entries and a golfer’s gift. The 19th Hole includes a keg, soft drinks and hors oeuvres. Prizes will be given for the two lowgross teams, as well as individual prizes for closest to the pin and longest drive. The event concludes with an awards banquet, raffle and silent auction. Sponsorships are still available by contacting Andrews at 678 472-7166. “Legacy Golf Course is a beautiful place to play,” Andrews said. “This challenging lakeside course is the perfect setting for our event and for the camaraderie between our club members, sponsors and others who play.” To register for the Kiwanis of North Gwinnett Fall Classic, visit northgwinnettkiwanis.com or see a member of the club for a brochure and registration form.

sertion that regardless of court action, the Corps controls water flow between the states. The Florida suit did not target the Corps. Draper noted the remand decision was a close majority, 5-4. The majority stated that Lancaster used “too strict a standard” for Florida to prove its case. During the court hearing, several justices voiced concern about Florida’s woes. Draper speculated that because the court took the case to begin with and later remanded it just might expose a court desire “to provide a remedy for Florida, if justified.” “(Justices) want to make sure they have a very thorough consideration of the case,” Draper said. “They want a full record before they rule on what will set up a relationship for many years.” He added that rather than leave water decisions up to “nine judges who have no experience whatsoever in water matters,” many states rely on interstate compacts or “treaties” approved by Congress. In the Sunshine/Peach State dispute, the states attempted a compact many

years ago but could not reach agreement. Chris Manganiello, Chattahoochee Riverkeeper Water Policy Director, pointed out that Florida, in its December post-remand brief, referenced a proposed agreement composed by the independent ACF Stakeholders, which in 2015 published a Sustainable Water Maintenance Plan outlining potential solutions. In that brief, Florida also tweaked its original demand to cap Georgia’s water at 1992 levels, revising its request for a limit at current levels until 2050. “It seems Florida realized what it was asking is not attainable, not justified by evidence,” Manganiello said. Florida’s brief presents Kelly with more factors. He speculated that Kelly already has “recommendations in his head, but wants to give both parties one more chance” in oral argument. CRK legal counsel Kevin Jeselnik agreed. “I think (Kelly) is formulating it as we speak and will dial it in” at oral arguments. Both CRK officials predicted Kelly’s report by late winter or early spring.

The heart and soul of India revealed during 3-week journey

By Pamela A Keene As a fifth-grader in Palatka, Fla., we had a television-learning program associated with the University of Florida. In the early 1960s, it was a pretty big deal and our class anticipated the 30minute sessions that introduced to us real people living around the world. Mrs. L.E. Bingham lived in Delhi, India, with her husband who was on a teaching assignment, and once a month she would come into our classroom via black-and-white TV to tell us what it was like in this legendary country. At the end of each program, a slide on the TV provided her address, encouraging us students to write to her. So I did. She wrote back, telling me about all the mysteries of this foreign land, from the culture and food to the Taj Mahal, built as an elaborate white-marble tomb of the wife of an emperor from the 1600s. As a 10-year-old, I never imagined I’d go to India, but earlier this year I spent three weeks there with 12 other travelers through Overseas Adventure Travel, www.oattravel.com, that books trips all over the world. The “Heart of India” 3-week itinerary was less than $4,500 including airfare from Atlanta, so it was an easy decision to make. The itinerary included the Golden Triangle of Delhi, Agra and

He was assassinated there on January 30, 1948, on his way to prayers and the path he took from the house to the prayer garden is marked with bare footprints made of concrete. The adjacent museum tells of his life of non-violence. After three days in Delhi, we flew to Jaipur, known as the “Pink City.” The sandstone buildings were all painted terra-cotta pink in honor of a state visit in 1876 by Queen Victoria and the Prince of Wales and the colors remain. After touring the city and the City Palace, we took a predawn hot-air balloon ride across the countryside near Jaipur.

• India

Continued from Page 58 for one-on-one time to find out about their daily lives. Our trip continued with an overnight stay in tent-roofed cottages before our overland trip to Agra, home of the Taj Mahal. It’s considered one of the Seven Modern Wonders of the World. The bright-white marble building is decorated with hundreds of thousands of semi-precious stones recessed into the exterior and interior walls. Surrounded by reflecting pools and lushly landscaped gardens it is indeed breathtaking. Even early in the morning, the grounds were crowded with visitors from every country imaginable. It was everything I imagined it to be; to be there was almost surreal. Photos in books can’t recreate the scale and the intricacy of this 400-year-old monument. Each year nearly 6.5 million people visit this architectural and spiritual masterpiece. Our trip ended with two days in Varanasi, one of India’s seven sacred cities. It is said that Buddha gained enlightenment and preached his first sermon near Varanasi. Each day thousands of pilgrims come to the Ganges River, called Mother Ganga by the natives, which flows through the

city. They descend the ghats, stone steps that provide access to the water, to bathe, wash clothes, worship, seek wisdom from the priests who line the shores, and worship at the nightly sacred light ceremonies. Many natives also come to Varanasi to die in the city and be cremated on the river’s shores. We explored Mother Ganges twice – once in the morning and then by boat at sunset into the evening. The atmosphere was radically different as the sun went down, with thousands of pilgrims gathering along the shores to participate in at least a half-dozen different ceremonies. The sounds of the priests and the chants of the religious filled the air in these nightly rituals. Three weeks in India was not nearly enough time. Our journey gave just a snippet of this massive country and its people, but it was a rare glimpse into a culture that’s been shaped by many civilizations and religions over the centuries. You cannot gain an understanding of this amazing country in a few short weeks, nor by reading books. Being there and meeting the people is just the beginning of the eye-opening education that has become my motivation for travel.

Group seeks life jacket donations

Friends of Lake Lanier is hosting a donation drive for U.S. Coast Guard Approved life jackets in all sizes. The effort supports the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers project to supply life jackets to children via loaner stations located on 18 Lake Lanier beaches. If you would like to help in the effort, life jacket donation sites are located inside Bald Ridge Marina, Gainesville Marina, Hideaway Bay Marina, University Yacht Club, and the Lanier Project Management Office, located at 1050 Buford Dam Rd., Buford. The Friends of Lake Lanier (FLL) is a

non-profit, 501(c)3 organization that has a Cooperating Association Agreement with the Army Corps of Engineers (COE). The group was created to help raise money to fund Corps objectives on the lake. Funds raised through dock permits, day use boat ramp passes, or park fees do not go back to Lanier operations. Those funds go directly to the U.S. Treasury. The Friends group was created to support services to parks, campgrounds, waterways, properties, and jurisdictions that are managed by the Corps. Info: www.friendsoflakelanier.org.
