The U.S. Department of Justice stated in a legal brief filed last month that the Corps “will review any final decision from the U.S. Supreme Court and consider any operational adjustments that are appropriate in light of that decision, including modifications to the then-existing (Master Manual), if applicable.” But it also emphasized that since the Corps was not a party in the case, its operations were not at issue and it is not compelled to act.

The Justice Department document, as well as briefs submitted

by Georgia counties and municipalities and other U.S. states, was the latest round of legal maneuvers following Florida’s plea that justices disregard a Special Master’s report that denies Florida’s request to limit Georgia’s water consumption. The Sunshine State sued Georgia in Oct. 2013 claiming that the Peach State hoards water upstream and threatens the

up Apalachicola region’s oysterdependent economy and ecology.

The lawsuit did not target the Corps, which manages flows from the Chattahoochee and Flint rivers into the Apalachicola River in Florida. After nearly two years of evidentiary proceedings and a two-month courtroom battle, Special Master Ralph Lancaster determined that Florida did not prove that capping Georgia’s water use would solve water woes downstream. He also implied Lancaster Florida was remiss in not naming the Corps in the lawsuit.

In its May 31 exception to Lancaster’s report, Florida cried the Apalachicola region’s survival depends on the court’s denial of the report. Florida attorneys claimed that Lancaster erred in concluding that uncertainties in Corps’ operations prevented him from apportioning water from Georgia to Florida. They pointed to a Corps’ document that stated the Corps would consider adjustments to its water release operations pending a Supreme Court

decision.

Georgia attorneys rebutted July 31 that Florida selectively quoted and omitted passages from a previous Corps document. The Corps stated it would “review and consider” any final court order, but also noted any changes to its master plan would require another drawn out public process and environmental assessments.

Since it was not a party in the lawsuit, the court could not force the Corps to take action.

The DOJ brief does not suggest that capping Georgia’s water use would not benefit Florida and the ACF. It states that increased flows could delay onset of drought operations and quicken normal operation after drought.

However, the United States takes no position on whether Florida proved limiting Georgia’s water consumption would provide Florida sufficient relief.

The brief further stated, “And of course, if, as Florida has argued and as the United States has agreed in principle, a decree capping Georgia’s consumption could result in more water flowing to Florida in some circumstances under existing Corps protocols, then the Corps would

likely not need to change its operations in response to such a decree.”

Lake Lanier stakeholders have kept an eye on the case, which could have repercussions for the largest reservoir on the ACF. Georgia officials rejoiced at Lancaster’s recommendation. An Atlanta Regional Commission amicus brief further supported it last month. Filing on behalf of Gwinnett, Forsyth, Dekalb, and Fulton counties, plus the cities of Atlanta, Gainesville and the Cobb County-Marietta Water Authority, the ARC document backed up the court official’s ruling.

Additionally, the state of Colorado offered its approval. Western states have long battled over water and focused on how the court official would rule in a water war down south. The Colorado brief asserts upstream water rights, stating that “only after a complaining state has clearly proven the effectiveness of its proposed remedy can the court begin to weigh the equities involved with apportionment. The Court should continue to enforce the requirement that a complaining state prove its entire case by clear and convincing evidence.”

Abandoned vessel removals continue

By Pamela A. Keene Nicknamed the “Ruskie” because it was abandoned in front of a $2 million home rumored to have been owned by a Russian, another houseboat eyesore has been removed from Lake Lanier. And while the Lake Lanier Association was involved peripherally, the work was done without funds from the organization or its usual partners.

“The real estate agent/property manager for the bank that handled the property facilitated the removal of the houseboat that had been on our radar for two years,” said John Barker with the association. “When they were getting ready for auction of the federally seized property, they got permission to clean the shoreline earlier this summer.”

The association has actively been removing abandoned boats from the lake and the shoreline for several years be-

cause of safety and environmental concerns. The Georgia General Assembly approved line-item funding through the Georgia Department of Natural resources to provide money for removals on Lanier by the association.

In recent months, the group has partnered with various regulatory, law-enforcement and judicial organizations to identify owners of abandoned boats and derelict docks and expedite removal.

When owners can be identified through boat registrations or boat vehicle identification numbers, they are contacted to handle the removal or they are held responsible for the costs of removal.

A situation that results in a vessel removal without the involvement of the association is rare. “It’s gone,” Barker said with a smile. “After two years it’s finally out of there at no expense to the Lake Lanier Association or the taxpayers.”

By Jane Harrison The Lanier Canoe & Kayak Club came back after a five year slump to reclaim its crown in USA Sprint Canoe & Kayak National Championships in Clermont, Fla. Aug. 2-5. The landslide victory was a long time coming for the local paddling club, which had relinquished the championship to Gig Harbor five straight years.

“It’s been a little while,” said Head Coach Kalen Scholz. This was LCKC’s 11th National Championship and its first since 2001. Scholz attributed the win to a robust showing across the board, from bantam to senior athletes. “We have a strong pool of bantam athletes who’ve been able to move up in the categories,” she said. Their evolvement, plus an experienced contingent of junior and senior athletes who committed to compete this year contributed to the medal count.

“Winning the National Championship is truly a team effort – a club has to have strong representation in every category to win,”

Scholz said. The Championship’s proximity to LCKC’s home also figured in. LCKC was able to take more athletes to the Florida site than to championships in distant states in past years.

Led by Scholz and coaches Jim O’dell, Cannie Ash, Dave Haack, and Riley Bruner, the team dominated competition from 26 teams from all over the U.S., scoring 952 team points, beating

More local teams competing in 22nd annual Dragon Boat races

By Jane Harrison The 22nd annual Atlanta Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival Sept.

9 brings exotic flavors and customs to Lake Lanier Olympic Park, plus a growing contingent of local boaters. About 12 teams from schools and businesses near the festival’s home waters plan to pile into the dragon-headed boats to race against Atlanta-area corporations and schools.

“We are getting more and more teams from the Gainesville area,” said festival director Gene Hanratty, senior consultant to the Hong Kong Economic & Trade Office in New York. 20-person crews from Lakeview Academy, Left Nut Brewery, Wrigley, ZF

Industries, Cargill, Jackson EMC, and two teams each from the University of North Georgia and Lanier Canoe & Kayak Club will engage in friendly competition with Delta, UPS, Home Depot, AT&T, Georgia Tech and other Atlanta giants. In the past, only a handful of locals paddled against crowds from the big city.

Hanratty expects registration to cap at 80 teams. To accommodate the long-boat invasion, the director acquisitioned two additional boats, adding to the eight provided by the Lanier Canoe & Kayak Club. “Adding these two extra boats will also allow five boats to race per 200 meter heat instead of four,” said LCKC Pres-

“The most exciting part – we will have all ten boats racing in the grand finale. This is something amazing to see,” Barth said.

Another change this year is the reconfiguration of the vendors and food court, which is a huge draw for multi-cultural souvenirs and edibles. “We will be moving all of the vendors outside of the entrance gate into an area that we are calling our ‘Vendor Village.’

This will ease some of the congestion in the plaza area and allow attendees the ability to move about more freely,” Barth said. Team tents will still line the plaza.

Also debuting this year: beer and possibly wine. Gainesville’s hometown brewery, Left Nut, will not only put a team in a boat, it will also pour pale ales, stouts and pilsners in the Vendor Village. The homemade brew will likely be in competition with the drink of the day: fresh squeezed sugar cane juice. The super sweet beverage plus Asian and southern delectables of all kinds give attendees a taste of foreign and familiar fare. Barth said organizers have not yet finalized plans to serve wine this year.

The main action on the lake –

with drums beating and paddles furiously churning the water – is just part of the fun. The traditional opening ceremony, which takes midway through the competition at 12:30 p.m., offers a crowd-pleasing dragon dance with multiple acrobats underneath the belly of dragon costume. The writhing, cavorting dragon gets his eye painted by a local or festival celebrity, signaling the start of a near-hour celebration with Asian dancers, musicians, and martial arts experts.

Hanratty said this year’s rendition will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the transfer of sovereignty over Hong Kong from Great Britain to China.

club members, to work the club’s largest annual fundraiser. “This is an event that everyone looks forward to, and each year we have a dedicated pool of volunteers who serve in positions from assembling volunteer lunches, helping teams unload equipment, parking, providing safety on the water, working the finish line, to name just a few,” Barth said.

Barth anticipates it will stir enthusiasm for next September’s ICF World Championship Dragon Boat races at LLOP. “ Hosting an event of that magnitude is no small feat; there will be more teams in attendance from countries all over the world and takes a lot of preparation,” she said.

“That event is strictly competitive,” Hanratty said. “Ours is by far recreational, more for fun.”

Keene Lake Lanier’s Barkley Geib could be called the “grandfather of the poker run.” After all, for 10 years he ran the nation’s largest Poker Run at Lanier Harbor Marina (from 1994-2003), consistently bringing more than 300 boats to Lake Lanier for a weekend in August and raising money for charity. And now he’s logged nearly 20 years of organizing onthe-water charity events, including his work with the Pirates of Lanier Family Poker Run, which just completed its eighth year.

For years, he toured with the Offshore Power Boat Association and supported a number of charities through the family’s McKinney Geib Foundation, which he manages. For the 10 years of the Poker Run, the organization has donated more than $2 million to support children’s charities including The Boys & Girls Clubs of Lanier, Kids in Distress and the Boy Scouts of America. The foundation has also supported lake causes, including the Lake Lanier Association.

When Lanier Partners decided to create its Pirates of Lanier Family Poker Run in 2010, one of

the group’s founding members the late Rea Williams approached Geib about advising them to create a successful event.

“Rea was instrumental in getting me involved and I was always amazed at his organizational skills that made the Lanier Partners event run smoothly,” Geib said. “After that first year, he convinced me to become part of the board, which I gladly accepted.”

Today, he’s president of the board and unofficially known as “the Grandfather of Poker Runs” on Lake Lanier because of his nearly 20 years of experience.

So why does Geib like to be involved in Poker Runs? “I just love all the organizational work, but the social aspects are a great way to bring people together,” he said. “It’s a time to have fun on the water and support an excellent cause – raising money for children’s charities.”

Geib brought many lessons learned to Lanier Partners, suggesting that the event be more about fun than being a timed competition. “When we did the Poker Runs at Lanier Harbor, organizing it was very complex,” he said. “We had three different

courses, because we had three speed classes of boats, and participants were divided into groups with half of them doing the timed course clockwise around the lake and the other half doing the course counterclockwise. I included trivia questions, which we can’t do now because people can Google the answers on their cellphones.”

For the Pirates of Lanier Family Poker Run, rules were adapted for family fun and a less competitive atmosphere, because the timing element was eliminated.

“Over the years, we’ve refined it even more by allowing boats to start from wherever they want and complete the course at their own pace,” he said. “Our ancillary events are family-focused and we use many more volunteers for the Pirates event than I did when in the Lanier Harbor days.”

Geib said that planning has been streamlined as well. “We have a whole board of directors and many reliable volunteers who each do their part in planning and implementation,” he said. “Their involvement is invaluable. When I did the Lanier Harbor event, it was pretty much just me until the

weekend of the event. That’s when the volunteers would come out.”

To produce the Pirates of Lanier Family Poker Run, it’s all hands on deck. In fact, in the weeks following each year’s event, board members and volunteers are already looking ahead to

the next year. “ ‘What can be done better? What can we do differently? What would our participants and volunteers like to see for next year?’ ” Geib said.

Atlantic waters are heating up Can you believe it’s already September? I am already seeing pumpkin lanterns and other Halloween fare at local stores. While many are thinking about cooler temperatures and fall color, my attention is still on the ocean. The 15th of September is the peak of the Atlantic Hurricane Season.

We have seen an increase in tropical activity in recent weeks. The Atlantic is boiling and sea-surface temperatures are at their maximum. The ACE index, Accumulated Cyclone Energy index, is also ramping up. The atmosphere is primed in the tropics. The point of origin for tropical storm and hurricane formation this time of year shifts to the eastern Atlantic Ocean.

Waves of thunderstorms that form over Africa are swept out to sea. If conditions are just right, a tropical depression will form, the first stage in hurricane development.

This is also the time of year for the “big ones.” Major hurricanes (Cat 3 and stronger) will form this time of year because of the heat, the hot ocean temperatures, and because they have a lot of ocean to cross with very little friction from land to hinder them. I always get a little nervous when I see the projected paths that bring them into the Gulf of Mexico. Hurricane Katrina was one such storm that really gained a lot of strength after festering for a few days in the near 90 degree water

temperatures.

From experience, I get just as worried with weak, slow-moving tropical storms. You may remember a fairly weak tropical storm named Alberto in 1994.

As it turned out, Alberto was the costliest storm of the 1994 Atlantic hur-

ricane season.

The storm was the first named storm of the season. It hit Florida across the Southeast United States in July, causing a massive flooding disaster while stalling over Georgia and Alabama. Alberto caused $1 billion in damage, in 1994 dollars, and 30 deaths. I have never ever seen flooding like that before or since. I remember our reporters showing caskets flowing down the some of the overflowing rivers in South Georgia.

I just wanted to point out that is does not have to be a Katrina-like storm to cause massive damage. A slow-moving or stalled tropical system can cause the same type of devastation. In addition, we would also see many tornadoes with a landfalling tropical system in north Georgia. I will be glad when this season comes to an end. NOAA keeps changing its forecast and the numbers of expected storms keeps increasing. We will keep you posted, as we always do.

An explanation of LORAN (Long Range Navigation) LORAN is an acronym for Long Range Navigation. It is currently an obsolete terrestrial radio navigation system which enabled ships and aircraft to precisely determine their position and speed from low frequency radio signals transmitted by fixed land based radio beacons, using a dedicated receiver unit.

The final version of LORAN in North America was LORANC, which operated in the low frequency level of the radio spectrum from 90 to 110 kHz. Russia used a nearly identical system in the same frequency range, called CHAYKA. LORAN was in steep decline in the ’90s and early part of the 21st century with the satellite-based Global Positioning System being the preferred technology that eventually replaced it.

However, there have been attempts to enhance and re-popularize LORAN, mainly to serve as a backup and land-based alternative to GPS and other satellite navigation systems. The current program has been phased out in the

‘Fire on the Water’ expected to be biggest LLOP event since Olympics The 2018 international competition will bring in 2,000 dragon boat racers

By Jane Harrison What’s being heralded as the biggest international competition held locally since the 1996 Olympics is coming to Lake Lanier Olympic Park a year from now. The International Canoe Federation Dragon Boat World Championships Sept. 12-16, 2018 is expected to bring about 2,000 athletes and coaches and possibly 10,000 spectators, according to Robyn Lynch, LLOP manager.

International crowds will converge on Lanier for practice five days before racing begins. The event, for which former venue manager Morgan House submitted the winning bid, will include many of the same elements of last year’s “Road to Rio” canoe/kayak Olympic qualifier at LLOP. Venue officials are planning for a huge influx of international visitors who will attend the open-

ing ceremony, congregate in an athletes’ village, participate and cheer in high level competition, and be awarded with medals.

Next month’s Hong Kong Atlanta Dragon Boat Festival offers a mere taste of the action a year away. Dubbed “Fire on the Water,” the world championship will be the 2018 climax of one of the world’s most colorful team water sports. Crews of 20 people, including a drummer and steerer,

Boating season is in its final weeks for the year The last of the boating season is upon us and it’s time to get your maintenance log out and get ready to winterize your boat.

Make a list of things you will need and then check West Marine or other boating retail store for their fall sale. Take a quick inventory of your boat for items that might need replacing, like PFDs, fire extinguisher, line, bumpers, anchor and rode, and flashlight.

Don’t forget about oil and filter, water separator and filter, “Stabil” or equivalent for the fuel tank.

If you are thinking of buying a new boat next year you might want to do a complete clean up and wax job and try to sell your boat this fall and then take advantage of the January Atlanta Boat Show deals. The boating industry has recovered and there will be a lot of new type boats offered.

Lost diamond in Lanier Atlanta Falcons star wide receiver Julio Jones lost an expensive diamond earring when he went for a jet ski ride recently on Lake Lanier, according to several news reports. The earring is reportedly valued at $150,000.

Jones said he lost the earring when he hit a boat wake and took a spill. He hired a full dive team to search for it, but they had no success in the 65 foot deep water.

Maybe a fish swallowed it. If it is ever found that will be another great story.

Some tips for keeping lake property values high

By Bev Knight You’ve probably heard that it has become a seller’s real estate market in parts of metro Atlanta.

That means that the demand for Knight homes exceeds the supply; so, sellers have more influence over the transaction, especially when it comes to price.

On the lake, that’s certainly true in the lower price points, less so in the luxury market. But, we’ve definitely seen improvement all around. It’s important to note that the industry has changed since the last significant seller’s market.

Buyers have vivid memories of the recession when homeowners found themselves profoundly upside down in their home values.

They are much more savvy buyers thanks to the wealth of information on the internet, and they are very careful not to pay too much for a home. So, there are new considerations for selling a house in a seller’s market.

In the old days, a seller’s market meant you didn’t have to do much to get your house sold. It could be outdated with deferred

maintenance. These days, you can still sell fixer-uppers, but you will get rock bottom prices for them.

If you have a magnificent lake lot with deep water and stellar views, sometimes you can get away with problematic homes. But for the rest of us, it pays to maintain your home to the norms in this market.

You don’t want to wait until right before you sell your house to do these tasks. It will be overwhelming and expensive, not to mention time-consuming. It’s best to try to do something every year to keep your home’s value as high as possible. Since the lake season is winding down, this is a good time to work on these projects.

Here are five projects you can do to help you keep the value of your home.

Outside - The exterior of your home will be the future buyer’s first impression, so you want to keep it looking fresh and loved. A lot of people ignore landscaping, and that is a mistake. Bushes that grow above the window sills are a definite indicator that the home is older. At the very least, keep the bushes trimmed and remove dead plants. If you can, try to update the landscape design every five years or so. Keep in mind that

even though “clean lines” are all the rage in architecture, they are not in style for landscaping. More natural curved borders are more visually appealing. Keep an eye on the wood trim surrounding your windows and doors. This is hot, humid Georgia, and one of the most common complaints on a home inspection is rotted exterior wood. If you let it go, moisture will eventually get into your walls and may cause a mold problem. Replacing rotted wood is probably less expensive than you might think, and it will save you headaches to keep it up. Another common finding on inspection reports is a crumbling driveway.

Most driveways have cracks, but if the broken concrete is separating from the rest of the drive, you may want to budget for replacing that section of driveway.

Inside – There are several observations that scream “old house.” Water stains are the kiss of death, even if the leak has been repaired. Make sure the leak is fixed, paint the affected area with Kilz or some equivalent, then repaint the area. Water problems scare buyers away almost 100 percent of the time. This is even true in unfinished basements.

Another deal killer is mold which is often preventable. Make sure your home is water tight so mold has no moisture to facilitate its growth. In the shower, make sure your grout is sealed because that’s a prime location for growth.

Check under sinks for minor leaks, and keep an eye on your basement. You don’t have to have an active leak to have mold in damp, humid areas. It is especially a problem for owners with vacation lake homes where they aren’t there much and there’s minimal air circulation. A dehumidifier will help. Products like Damp Rid are also useful. Our favorite mold killer is Home Armor available at hardware stores, but a simple bleach spray may take care of it. A little early maintenance can help you avoid mold remediation which can be thousands of dollars. Plus, it’s your home and you want it to be a healthy environment whether you’re selling or not.

Pay attention to the little things that show the age of a house. Basically, what make this house look like it’s not new construction. For example, clean the dust from your vents. Take the vent panel off with a screw driver,

then clean it thoroughly. If they’re really old, a quick coat of spray paint will freshen them. Likewise, clean your light switch plate and the surrounding walls. The Mr. Clean Magic Eraser makes this a 60-second job. It works great. If you are like most people, the trim around your doors is a little banged up. Touch it up with trim paint to make it look newer. The state of your sheetrock will be important to buyers. If it is cracked, they often assume there is a foundation problem. If there is major damage, get a professional to repair it. Your painter can probably do this for you. But if there are minor cracks, you can fix them yourself. There’s a great little gizmo available at the big box hardware stores or Amazon called a Dap Stick. It looks like a glue stick with a flat spreader for a lid. You run the stick across the crack to apply the sealant, then spread it flat with the spreader. It couldn’t be easier, and you may not even have to sand before you paint it.

Recently, the Corps of Engineers announced that it would allow the use of security cameras on Lake Lanier. “The Lake Lanier Association membership was overwhelmingly in favor of lifting this prohibition,” said Joanna Cloud, executive director of the association. “Special thank you to Congressman Rob Woodall for his involvement in getting this policy reviewed.”

A message about the drought In early August, the association issued a news release requesting that the Corps of Engineers and the Environmental Protection Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources “use all available tools to restore and keep Lake Lanier at its full pool level.”

The association pointed out that the lake has not been at full pool since the spring of 2016 and it continued to drop during the normal winter recharge season when the lake level normally increases.

The Corps cut back on releases because of increased rainfall south of Atlanta, but since mid-summer the levels have been dropping.

“The association believes that hope is not a strategy,” Cloud said. “We urge all agencies to adopt a strategy of keeping Lake Lanier as full as possible at all times due to the critical dependency on the lake

Lynch new leader for Lanier’s Olympic Park Shore Lines From the fascinating to the remarkable, Lake Lanier harbors many personalities and places along its shores. Lakeside presents “Shore Lines” – stories about people who live, work and play around the lake and the places that make the area special.

By Jane Harrison ackets of brochures and fliers lined the table inside Robyn Lynch’s new office. The materials heralding a food truck party and exotic world championship at Lake Lanier Olympic Park showed the promoter at work. The recently named venue manager at LLOP had begun executing her public relations skills in print, social media, and networking to do her primary jobs: event planning, fund-raising and community relations.

Gainesville-Hall ’96, LLOP’s governing board, chose Lynch, an experienced fund-raiser, to lead the living relic of the 1996 Olympics through a revival that started more than five years ago.

Lynch’s task centers on getting financial backing for a $10 million master plan to keep the Olympic flame aglow, not just for the sports that brought the Games to Lake Lanier, but for a community that is just awakening to a diverse public park.

Lynch hopes a new event, Food Truck Friday, will bring in folks who’ve never visited LLOP. “We want people to realize it’s the community’s park. The rowing club and canoe/kayak club brought it here and kept it running,” she said.

But the park culture has expanded well beyond those sports to include wake-boarding contests, concerts, movies, weddings, corporate team-building, al fresco dinners, and even a motorcycle rally. Former manager Morgan House, who resigned in July to sell real estate, pioneered changes in the Olympic waters.

Lynch noted that even though the park has broadened its scope, many area residents still don’t know about it. For instance, she said, out of 40 students visiting the park last month in a Leaders of Hall County event, only five had ever been there.

Lynch touted amenities the park has to offer: a shaded picnic area, beach, seasonal paddleboard and canoe/kayak rentals, and a 2,000-capacity grandstand and plaza overlooking the lake, plus the infrastructure to hold local and international water sports events. She has started hosting

tours and presentations to better familiarize people with the unique public asset.

Lynch, 47, came into the job from a background in political and local fund-raising. The Savannah native moved to Gainesville 13 years ago. After traveling statewide with political campaigns, she chose to settle down in what she described as a “very giving, warm, and receptive community.”

She initiated a Health Smart Expo and Chamber Challenge 5K while working at the Greater Hall Chamber of Commerce. She got involved with several local nonprofits, including the Junior League of Gainesville-Hall County and Quinlan Visual Arts Center. She said her favorite venture was the creation of WomenSource, a non-profit that encourages personal and professional success for women.

She currently serves as PTA president at North Hall Middle School, where her son, Ryan, is a student. Her daughter, Holly, is enrolled at Georgia College & State University in Milledgeville.

After her first weeks on the job, Lynch was getting a grasp on managing a venue with many moving parts. She said challenges include dealing with day to day operation on top of planning for next year’s ICF Dragon Boat World Championships and capital campaigning.

The workload is lightened a bit by assistant manager James Watson, who was hired full-time to handle much of the physical upkeep at the park. On a day that kept Lynch in the office and Watson away for a funeral, trash cans overflowed on the beach side of the park. Porta potties stood alongside the closed restroom in the center of the parking lot. The park cried for attention. The aging boathouse, with decades old infrastructure, does, too.

Lynch knows about the needs.

The contracted regular trash pickup is not enough, she said, when visitors are apparently depositing waste at the park after dark. The restroom situation, an eyesore at best, is also not acceptable. She plans to launch fund-raising activities for new restrooms and a pavilion in the fall, pending U.S.

Last year GH ’96 completed a $1.1 million Phase 1 renovation, installing improvements to the Olympic tower and building a tower-to-plaza bridge. The restroom/pavilion additions, plus a walking path, compose Phase 2.

A third phase includes boathouse renovations. The facility, built as a temporary base for the Olympics, “is in great need of TLC,” Lynch said.

The new venue manager, a self-described “outdoor girl,” has gotten her feet wet on a paddleboard and is “learning the termi-

nology” of canoe/kayak and rowing through the clubs that train from the venue.

House, hired in 2014 as the first venue manager, grew up in the Lanier Canoe & Kayak Club and pursued Olympic berths in 2008 and 2012. “He was certainly the right guy at the right time,” said Mimi Collins, GH ’96 chairperson. He became the face of the venue, escorting it into a new age and culture.

Collins expressed confidence in the new face at the venue, one that gazes into a future in need of money and continued public support. Lynch was the best candidate for the job, Collins said.

“She has great fundraising experience, organizational skills, event planning and people skills and her experience working at the Chamber transitions well” into GH 96’s goals for the venue.

On a hot August day a week before food trucks rolled onto the plaza and a year before thousands of international dragon boaters will hit the water, Lynch retreated briefly from a full agenda to pose for a picture. Some kayakers stroked the waters in the Olympic channel. “It’s so peaceful here,” she said, getting a dose of tranquility in the midst of all she must do to carry a legacy park into the future.

Create a scarecrow to pose in Gainesville Garden

Atlanta Botanical Garden’s Gainesville Garden is accepting registrations for its inaugural Scarecrows in the Garden through Sept. 8.

The fall tradition, popular at the Midtown Atlanta garden, is a natural at the more rural Gainesville garden where the main ingredients – straw and creativity – abound.

“Our visitors and members always enjoy it (in Atlanta), so we decided to bring it to Gainesville,” said Mildred Fockele, director of the Smithgall

Woodland Legacy Garden. Sightseers flock to the garden in October, one of the highest visitation months, to see the whimsical, artsy, and sometimes scary characters posed amidst the season’s blooms and foliage.

Scarecrow creators can register online at the Garden’s website: www.atlantabg.org (search for Gainesville Garden). The garden will accept 25 scarecrows, which will be on display Oct. 4-29.

Anyone can register. Fockele suggested the event would give scout groups, art clubs, book clubs, individuals and businesses opportunity to bundle loose ends into a creative venture.

sional or non-professional categories. Professional represents anyone on the scarecrow team who is in any way compensated for art or design services or for fabrication services.

Registrants can drop off their scarecrows Sept. 27. Garden staff will assemble and pose them. The garden provides signage identifying the organization and name of the scarecrow. Each paid registration gets four free tickets to the garden during the exhibition.

The garden is not the only local gathering place for hayseed fun this fall. The Gainesville CVB’s Squarecrows and Gainesville Garden’s scarecrows are colluding, Fockele said. Each organization is promoting the other’s wacky display.

Other unusual characters will invade garden next month. Goblins and creepy crawlies saunter through on Oct. 22. Kids can show off their Halloween costumes in a runway fashion show, complete with crafts and display of nocturnal creatures from the natural world.

Fall pruning for a healthy and safe winter, plus September chores While most people think of pruning and shaping trees in the spring, the fall is just as good a time. Allen Graham, arborist with Arbor One tree service, said that limbing up trees and removing dead wood can be done as fall and winter approach. An earlyfall fertilizing with an all-purpose product like 10-10-10 is also wise; just don’t wait too late in September.

“Raising the canopy of your trees allows extra light into your yard and can really help promote grass growth in otherwise-shady areas,” Graham said. “Also be sure to remove any low-hanging limbs and any dead wood that might become a place where ice or snow can accumulate. If we have ice storms or damp snowfall, it’s easy for the excess weight to cause limb or trunk breakage.”

Pruning lower limbs will also encourage stronger growth and more nutrients farther up the trunk.

“It’s natural for nutrients to first reach the lower limbs and make it more difficult to get energy to the higher branches,” he said. “And by selectively remov-

We call this type of pruning ‘crown balance.’ It also allows wind to pass more easily through the tree, kind of like making it a window instead of a door.”

Graham also suggests keeping branches at least 10 feet from your home’s roofline to prevent easy access by wildlife and rodents. Especially if it’s cold or rainy, making their home in your attic is very tempting for squirrels, chipmunks and even roof rats.

Proper pruning techniques are important. The best way to prune

is a branch collar cut that leaves enough of the branch for selfhealing. And there’s no need to use pruning paint, if the cut has been made properly.

“Tree care is very specialized, so it’s a good idea to work with an arborist to determine what trees to remove, what to prune and how to prune them,” he said.

What not to prune: Springblooming shrubs, such as forsythia, azaleas, viburnum, flowering quince and fothergilla have already produced their buds for next year. Do not prune these shrubs other than to cut out dead wood. If you prune now, you’ll lose all blossoms for next spring.

Columbus, Ga. has experienced a magical rebirth My previous memory of Columbus, Georgia was of a run down old town with eroded river banks that were littered with trash floating down from Atlanta. On the other side of the Chattahoochee River at this point was the Alabama town of Phenix City, which was known as “The Sin City of the South.” So, I was naturally shocked on a recent visit to see a total metamorphosis from the gloom of the past to the traveler’s destination of today!

The most noticeable and picturesque addition to the old city is the fabulous 15-mile trail known as the Chattahoochee River Walk.

Brilliant city planners realized that any rebirth of the city would have to begin with a return to the river which had always been the life blood of this area. Therefore in 1996, the initial stretch of the trail was extended to the main post of Fort Benning, giving walkers and bikers the opportunity to observe wildlife and a part of the city. Now, the River Walk extends through a diverse scenic path all the way to the old cotton mill town of Bibb City.

Another exciting aspect to the river area of the old downtown is the Columbus Whitewater course which offers miles of wet and wild fun on the Chattahoochee River. It is the longest urban whitewater rafting in the world.

The real estate market on Lake Lanier is wide open this summer, according to a recent report by Birmingham-based Lake Homes Realty. The brokerage has released its summer market report on lake real estate trends across Georgia and eight other Southern states. The information is sourced through reported MLS data, and covers all lake real estate in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Oklahoma, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia.

Among Georgia lakes, real estate in Lake Lanier is running strong.

In sheer market size, Lanier is the second-biggest lake in Georgia real estate, with roughly $530 million on the market. That number includes more than $375 million in homes, $115 million in undeveloped land, and $39 million in commercial property.

This summer, home prices on Lake Lanier have had a slight 4 percent drop since the spring, to an average of $575,113. At the same time, the number of homes on the market has jumped 13 percent, to more than 650 listings.

the effectiveness of the window is compromised, and home inspectors will flag it every time. Often, it is time that breaks the seal, but it can also be cause by a pressure wash that is too powerful. So, be sure your pressure washer cranks down the pressure for the windows to avoid this problem.

So as you think about your maintenance plan, budget for these fixes. If you are thinking more long term and have the budget, windows with wood frames are becoming much less common because of the wood rot. For a while, vinyl windows were used instead. Today, fiberglass windows have been found to be even more reliable, so savvy builders are turning to that product. Talk to your builder about the best choice for your house.

Long-term Care – There are quite a few long-term maintenance issues that come up in a home inspection. If you live on the lake, there is a pretty good chance you have had critters in your attic. You probably had that taken care of, but did you clean

up the droppings? An inspector will note the presence of that feces and recommend having pest remediation which is very expensive. Don’t worry that you have to disclose that you’ve had pests because almost everyone on the lake has. But, do clean up the evidence to save future hassles, not to mention that it is unsanitary and potentially unhealthy. Most inspectors will go up on the roof to check it out, and they almost always find something wrong. If your roof has damage, here’s something to consider. Most insurance companies will not cover a new roof unless it has hail damage. There may be a time limit on that, but we HAVE had a hail storm in this area this past year.

You will have to provide a date for the storm which you can find on the internet. It doesn’t cost you anything to ask, and you might end up with a new roof paid by insurance.

Front Door – Chances are you enter your house through the garage and never see your front door. However, your future buyers (and current visitors) will come through the front, so make sure it looks well-maintained. It is

very common for sellers to have a faded or marred front door which taints the first impression for any buyer. Keep it looking nice.

Dock and Path – Last but not least, keep your dock in decent shape. That means the wood should be sealed regularly so it doesn’t rot. If you have rotted wood, replace it. It’s a safety hazard for you and your family, and it is a negative for a buyer. By the same token, keep your dock path clear. The Corps does allow you to maintain your path including overhanging tree limbs. You can find their guidelines by searching for U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Lanier.

It pays to try to keep up these minor elements that make up your lake house. It will make is easier to sell in the future, but it will also make it more pleasant for you and your family today.
