Last year, the Lake Lanier Association introduced TrashOut, a free mobile app for iPhone and Android devices that allows people to digitally tag trash and debris around the lake so that volunteers can remove it during the group’s annual Shore Sweep.

This year’s event takes place on Saturday, September 24, at various locations around the lake.

“Last year we had more than 750 reports we were able to address around the lake,” said Joanna Cloud, executive director of the 2,500-member lake advocacy group. “This year, we’re ramping up our haul by encouraging everyone to use the TrashOut app to report trash, debris and other items, so that we can produce action lists of areas to address with our volunteers.”

Cloud explained that the association has been working with a programmer to expand the capabilities of the app to include detailed printouts of each report.

“These reports will be distributed to each of our area captains, so

that they can give them to volunteers who will be assigned to specific items,” she said. “We saw how effective the app was in last year’s event and we know that with these tweaks, it will be even better.”

Shore Sweep actually gets under way in early September with volunteers around the lake dropping of lake debris at eight advance locations. The day of the event, volunteers report to one of 12 sites, most of the lake’s marinas and several designated parks, where area captains coordinate the morning’s collection activities.

In 2015, volunteers for the association collected more than 40 tons of debris from the lake and its shorelines. “So far this year, with the removal of several abandoned boats, we’ve already hit the 40-ton mark, but we fully expect that from Shore Sweep alone

we will exceed another 40 tons, just in September,” Cloud said.

“This project is so vitally important to the health and cleanliness of Lake Lanier. We are very grateful for everyone who helps with this annual event. it helps us maintain our mission of “Clean Lake, Full Lake, Safe Lake.”

Water Wars trial moves to Maine in October

By Jane Harrison The water fight between Georgia and Florida heads into Maine next month, where legal proceedings are scheduled to begin Oct. 31.

Citing insufficient staffing at the requested federal Lancaster courthouse in Washington, D.C., Special Master Ralph Lancaster moved the action closer to his home base in Portland, Maine.

Attorneys will argue before the 86-year-old veteran Supreme Court special master appointed to oversee the case in 2014. Federal justices are expected to rely on his opinion to rule on the 2013 suit in which Florida seeks to limit Georgia water consumption and receive restitution for damages downstream.

Florida alleges Georgia has hoarded water from the Chattahoochee and Flint rivers, causing low flows on the Apalachicola River leading to economic and environmental harm to Apalachicola region on the panhandle. Georgia denies consuming more than its share and points

to a U.S. Circuit Court ruling that the state can tap Lake Lanier, the river system’s largest reservoir, to supply metropolitan Atlanta’s water needs. The burden of proof lies on Florida, which Lancaster asserts must prove that capping Georgia’s water use could solve Florida’s water woes. The Sunshine State must also show it suffered harm due to Georgia allegedly siphoning more than its share.

Both states have spent tens of millions of dollars piling up millions of electronic and paper documents from municipalities, farmers, and soil and water experts up and down the river system. Florida’s evidence search reached beyond the thirsty cities along the Chattahoochee River and into Georgia’s water-craving cropland along the Flint River.

Georgia subpoenaed evidence from Florida oyster fisheries, farms, and municipalities. Both states questioned each others’ environmental officials, university experts, and conservation efforts.

Lancaster has repeatedly urged the states to settle the matter through a mediator to avoid an outcome that will please neither.

Attorneys’ August status reports

indicated both sides were still meeting confidentially with a mediator; however neither reported progress.

With the trial looming, Georgia attorney Craig Primis stated mediation is on-going. “Georgia has devoted, and will continue to devote, resources to attempting to

find ways to amicably resolve this dispute,” he said.

Lancaster, who has warned states about a potential billion dollar cumulative cost for a court ruling, noted what he deemed an apt setting for the trial: “It will be located, appropriately enough, in the bankruptcy court.”

Since Flat Creek, a six-mile tributary, flows in and out of the City of Gainesville and unincorporated Hall County, a collaborative effort was initiated in 2014 between various entities including the county, the city, the Lake Lanier Association, Keep Hall Beautiful, the Hall County Green Alliance and numerous citizens and likeminded parties.

The plan was to develop a solution to protect Lake Lanier from the impacts of floatable trash and debris. After several meetings and field trips, partners determined that the bandalong litter trap was the best option for addressing this concern.

Designed by Storm Water Systems Inc., the project scope also included the construction of a parking lot and educational display for school field trips and environmental awareness efforts related to water quality and protection of aquatic life.

Safe boating course set for Sept. 17 Flotilla 29 of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, Lake Lanier, announces a one-day, seven-lesson “About Boating Safely” course. The course is scheduled for Saturday, September 17, 2016. This course also serves as a PWC certified course for children under the age of 16.

This course will be given at the Coast Guard Operations Center, 6595 Lights Ferry Rd., Flowery Branch, Ga., on the left just before the entrance to Aqualand Marina. Classes run from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. and cost is $35. Discounts available for additional family members.

LAKE LANIER OLYMPIC PARK Rio on the Water a hit at local Olympic park

By Jane Harrison Hours before the Olympic torch was lit in Rio, lights and spirits were bright at Lake Lanier Olympic Park. Dancing, music, food and drink, dignitaries, and a parade of athletes and volunteers lit up a plaza full of celebrants at Rio on the Water: A Renewal of the Olympic Spirit. Organized by Gainesville-Hall ’96, the Aug. 5 gala celebrated the 20th anniversary of the 1996 Olympic rowing and canoe/kayak venue.

An estimated 620 partiers paying $100 each or $1,500 for 10person tables packed the lakeside plaza where Brazilian dancers and drummers led honorees in a samba processional beginning the evening’s festivities.

Hand in hand, Gov. Nathan Deal and first lady Sandra Deal sauntered in, followed by Steve Gilliam, Jim Mathis, and Mary Hart Wilheit, the core three-some that led the effort to bring the 1996 events to Lake Lanier. Three rowers who captured silver in the Olympic channel stepped proudly back to the site for the first time since their finest athletic moment.

Dozens of volunteers who welcomed the world with their service and generosity marched in to cheers.

Attendees filled plates at buffet islands with Brazilian spiced grilled meats and vegetables, served and prepared by Chef Kern Chaisson and staff. Craft beer and wine stations poured dinner and party drinks. The actual opening ceremony from Brazil beamed on big screen while Lanier fans watched from couches and chairs outside the gala tent.

vested their hearts into LLOP, 12piece band The Atlanta Showstoppers coaxed attendees out of their chairs with lively dance tunes. A couple of large outdoor units blew cold air on a hot muggy night that mimicked a Brazilian carnival, except folks were respectfully attired.

Gov. Deal, who in 1996 cheered from temporary floating stands across from the plaza, welcomed the revival of the 20-yearold site. The event’s grand marshal recalled that the venue brought the world to Lanier in 1996 and remarked that he foresees its continued success attracting national and international business to the state. “You have a lot to be proud of,” he told Lanier’s Olympic “pioneers” and those who currently support LLOP. Venue manager Morgan House, whose 1996 view of Olympic paddlers launched his own Olympic voyage, commended the local rowing and canoe/kayak clubs that kept the venue afloat after the Olympic

torch went out. “Without them there would be no celebration,” he said.

GH ’96 Chairperson Mimi Collins deemed the past and ongoing Olympic movement at the 1996 site “a testament to our community’s leadership and vision” supported by a strong public-private relationship. Prior to taking the podium, she described the celebration turn-out “better than I could have ever imagined.”

She was happy to see a crowd come out to enjoy the community investment steered by GH ’96.

“It’s a blast coming here again,” said Brian Jamieson, part of the 1996 Olympic silver medal quad rowing crew. Olympic boat mate Tim Young concurred. “It gives me goose bumps to be back here” and to see the support of the venue. “It’s terrific. It looks great,” added Eric Mueller, who along with Young planned a reunion row at sunrise with Lake Lanier Rowing Club members.

The celebration drew not just those directly involved with the Olympic effort, but those who watched from the sidelines or vacationed elsewhere. “It’s breathtaking” to be back and see the revival of the venue, said Robin Halstead, a 1996 spectator. “We came back to meet some friends who helped” prior to the Olympic push, said former Greater Hall Chamber of Commerce leader Rich White, who got away to the Caribbean with wife Vickie while international visitors rented their home in 1996. Is carbon fiber the next big thing in boat building?

What is the future of carbon fiber as it relates to boat building?

That’s what Chris Caswell explores in a recent “Boating” magazine article. Like the word “stealth,” carbon fiber has crept into our modern language. It has been used in cars; 1981 when McLaren built the first Formula One racer. Boeing uses 7,700 pounds of it in their 787 dream liner. Remember the Americas Cup winner “Oracle?” The 72’ catamaran sailed over 50 knots and was made of carbon fiber.

The material is more expensive, but a 28’ boat could weight a total of 4,500 pounds verses a fiberglass boat that could go over 10,000 pounds. The lighter the boat, the better the economy and speed. Carbon fiber boats must have proper insulation around electronic devices as the material will conduct electricity. This, plus cost, are really the only downsides. According to the magazine the price of commercial grade carbon fiber composites ranges from $5 to $20 per pound, depending on variables, while fiberglass runs from $1.50 to $3.

Some of the cost difference is mitigated by the fact that you use less carbon fiber (by weight) than fiberglass to build a boat.

“Boating” tested a Paragon Super Sport 28 built entirely of carbon fiber and powered by a “Seven Marine” 627 hp outboard.

It showed a top speed of 81 mph.

Of course when you cruise at a sensible speed, say 40 knots, you will burn less fuel.

Dragon Boat Festival expected to be biggest ever

By Jane Harrison Combine exotic cuisine, brilliant costumes, pounding of drums, and an ancient Asian sport. Mix in dozens of corporate and private teams, lined up in long boats spiked with dragon heads. Pour in an equal number of cheering spectators. Add water under an early September sky in a stunning lakeside setting. The successful recipe will again cook up lakeside fun at the 21st Annual Atlanta Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival Sept. 10 at Lake Lanier Olympic Park.

Known as one of the largest events on Lanier, the paddling competition and showcase of Asian cuisine and culture is back bigger than ever this year. “We’ve got more than a full field” of teams, reported event director Gene Hanratty of the Atlanta Hong Kong Information Center.

The expansion to 78 teams from the previous record of 72 will likely have dragon boats racing nearly head to tail down the

Olympic channel.

“It will be a full day festival … it’s hard to turn down people,” Hanratty said. He describes the festival as “the best hands on cultural diversity event in the area.”

Corporate giants Home Depot, AT&T and Atlanta-area businesses, plus club teams from area colleges and paddling groups will race in 39-foot boats ornamented with plastic dragon heads and tails. A drummer in each boat pounds out the beat for 20 paddlers stroking feverously to the finish buoys. The excitement on the water extends into the grandstands, where vendors slice and squeeze sugar cane for juice, grill meats for kabobs, and wrap Chinese vegetables in egg rolls.

The action begins with Buddhist monks’ blessing of the boats at 7 a.m. and breaks at noon for a rousing opening ceremony with Asian dancers, acrobats, and a multi-person costumed dragon.

Hanratty said this year’s rendition will feature a tribute to the

Olympic park’s 20th anniversary.

He noted recent renovations at the park and capable volunteers from the Lanier Canoe & Kayak Club.

The paddling club puts about 170 volunteers on site, staging races, guiding and bailing out boats, directing parking, and performing other tasks to host the event. Hanratty expects the festival to continue its long time run on Lanier not just because of the park’s features, but also due to the human resources supporting it.

Long, hot summer comes to close As we all know, it was a long and very hot summer. 2016 may well turn out to be the warmest on record. However, this month we celebrate the arrival of autumn. I would not expect a big drop in temperatures this month to herald its arrival. For me, the signal that autumn has arrived is the Full Harvest Moon.

The Harvest Moon is the full moon closest to the September equinox. The equinox takes place this year on September 22. So the closest full moon to the autumn equinox is on September 16 at 3:05 pm. There is nothing more beautiful than being out on the lake watching the glistening ripples of water as the moon rises above the eastern horizon. That my friends, is the beginning of fall for me.

As we moved into the last week of August, the questions began pouring in on my Facebook page. the questions I am referring to, of course, is what our winter will be like. There are some things I have been looking at that provide some signals or clues. You all remember last year we had a fairly wet winter but with above average temperatures. Our winter pattern was the result of El Nino. El Nino is when above average sea surface temperatures in the eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean change the global wind patterns, resulting in wet and cool winters for the Southeast. There are signals right now that actually show a La Nina developing. This is where we see

below average sea surface temperatures in the same area but the result Glenn is quite different. La Burns Nina winters are generally warm and dry for Lanier the Southeast.

Outlook While we wait for patterns for emerge for the upcoming winter months, let’s not forget this is the most active month for hurricanes. NOAA updated its forecast to say we have a high probability of an above average year. On average we see 11 named tropical storms, six of which will be hurricanes. NOAA is predicting 12-17 named storms, 5-8 to become hurricanes, with 2-4 being major hurricanes. This is the time of year when the big ones develop. They form from waves or clusters of thunderstorms coming off the west coast of Africa.

The reason they can get so powerful is the ocean. They “feed” on the ocean and there’s a lot of ocean to cross before they get near the U.S. mainland. Where they go as they approach the mainland is largely dependent on the position of the Bermuda High. If it’s close to the Southeast coast the hurricanes will cross Florida in the Gulf of Mexico. If the Bermuda High is farther from the coast, near its usual position near Bermuda, the storms will hook around it and run parallel to the coast without too much impact. These storms do tend to hit the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

On August 3, she quietly passed away at Cannon Village in Tiger, Ga., near the cabin she lived in for the last years of her long and accomplished life. She had celebrated her 90th birthday just weeks before with family and friends.

Prominent in national and international boating circles – as a ranking officer with the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, head of safety for the sailing events at the 1996 Olympics, a national board member of several influential marine organizations and a pioneer for women in boating – she will be missed.

For decades, Bolling was familiar face around Lake Lanier on the south side. She ate lunch a couple of times a week at Common Grounds in downtown Flowery Branch.

In her work with the Coast Guard Auxiliary, she frequently patrolled the lake on weekends.

Members of the sailing community called on her for support during major regattas.

“I’ve known Bolling since I was 13 years old, and I’ve always treasured her friendship and her advice,” said US Sailing Judge Edith Collins, who lives in Buford and races on Lanier. “We all worked together on the sailing courses at the 1996 Olympics in Savannah and she was always professional and very knowledge-

able.”

Volunteering for 45 years In 2005, after 45 years of volunteer service that included highlevel positions in the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and a career as a boat surveyor and safety advocate, she retired from the US Coast Guard Auxiliary. Locally, she had served in Division II, District 7, Flotilla 26, holding a variety of offices including Commodore of the group. She also served as District Commodore in 1979 and 1980, overseeing the civilian side of support for the Mariel Boat Lift in south Florida.

She held positions in a number of marine-related organizations and councils – The American Boat and Yacht Council Inc., the National Boating Safety Advisory Council, the Rules of the Road Advisory Council, the Marine Council of Underwriters Laboratories Inc., and others. She was a marine surveyor for more than 35 years and served on the board of the industry’s professional organization.

Douglas had long been a mentor to boaters. Through her years in Flotilla 26, she continued to shepherd members. In 1979-80, Douglas became the first woman District Commodore of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary in the country – not an easy feat for a field that’s long been dominated by men. She also was one of the few female marine surveyors in the nation, and the first – in the 1970s – to become a member of the National Association of Ma-

As District Commodore during the Mariel Boat Lift, she established Operation Keyring to assist the Coast Guard in search and rescue resources in the Florida Keys. The Auxiliary conducted 400 patrols, set up four Auxiliary radio facilities and handled 75 search and rescue cases, logging in more than 25,000 man-hours in two weeks.

Douglas always championed women on the water. In an interview in 2005, she was modest about her leadership role.

“Now there are plenty of good women mariners that have a strong enough interest to keep it going the rest of their lives, good women surveyors, boaters and sailors,” she said. “Women

are a big market; they work and have money to spend. And they’re getting more confident and competent about boating.

There are plenty of educational opportunities out there as well.”

Until 10 years ago, she lived on her boat at University Yacht Club with her beloved dogs, who made many voyages with her over the years. Her children persuaded her to move to a cabin in North Georgia, and then to an assisted living facility nearby.

Last November, her youngest son Malcolm and daughter Anne took her on her final voyage on the St. Johns River in Jacksonville, cruising past all her old familiar haunts.

“It was such a joy to see Mama on the boat again,” Malcolm said recently. “We had no idea that it would be her last time on the river. It meant so much to her and to us.”

Bolling is survived by her three children – Allen, Anne and Malcolm – their children, grandchildren and more friends than anyone can count.

Updated and revised: Lake Lanier history book headed to the printer

Keene What has in many ways become the definitive book about the construction of Buford Dam and Lake Lanier is now updated and has “left the building,” headed to the printer for delivery later this fall. Historian David Coughlin has worked on the revised version for many months and in late August sent the new version of “Lake Sidney Lanier: A Storybook Site” to production.

“I’ve added more photographs – 400 in fact – plus aerials of the construction and updated some of the content,” said Coughlin, who formerly worked as a park ranger for the Corps of Engineers. “It has much more information about properties around the lake. It’s the only major revision since it was originally published in 1998.”

In the past 18 years, Coughlin has printed nearly 5,000 copies of the 450-page hard-bound coffee table-style book, which was chiefly sold through marinas and select retail locations. For this reprint, he presold more than 500 copies through his website at a pre-publication price of $59. The

The book details the story of the Apalachicola-ChattahoocheeFlint River Basin from the early 1800s to its development into the complex system that today is managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. same distinctive four-color cover as the original version with the addition of sponsorship acknowledgements.

A wet fourth quarter could bring drought relief

By Jane Harrison A wet fall forecast for the Southeastern U.S. may replenish Lake Lanier and other reservoirs on the river system that traverses Georgia, Florida, and Alabama. Climate experts from the three states at odds for decades over water issues offered some scientific evidence that the final quarter of 2016 could bring showers of relief after a drier than normal summer with record breaking heat.

University climatologists and scientists from the U.S. Geological Survey, Southeast River Center, NOAA, and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers discussed current conditions and forecasts with about two dozen ACF Stakeholders in a drought assessment webinar last month. The stakeholders represent private and public entities from the three states that rely on water supply from the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint river system. Its northernmost reservoir, Lake Lanier, is the largest on the river system.

Lanier, down in mid-August about five feet from its summer full pool of 1,071 feet above sea level, and other Corps reservoirs downstream were showing the effects of an abnormally dry summer, with some sections of Georgia and Alabama experiencing severe to extreme drought. The reservoirs and rivers ran low in July and August due not just to diminished rainfall, but also because of record heat with relentless 90-plus degree days.

But, changes may be coming. Southeast River Survey Climatologist Todd Hamill predicted a short term drought would continue through mid-September, followed by “a lot of rain” October through December.

“If we get through the fall with some improvement, we’ll get into winter in better shape,” he said.

Climatologists agreed that a La Nina climate pattern, in which cool oceanic temperatures influence global atmospheric conditions, is likely to enhance tropical activity the last three months of the year.

A tropical storm, like one that churned the central Atlantic last month, could bring torrents to the region, Hamill said. However, the inland effects of such storms are unpredictable.

It was noted that the rainfall that ravaged Louisiana last month did not move east to the drought-stricken states.

Corps climate official Cynthia Donald reported that consistent afternoon rain showers in the Lanier watershed kept the water level from sinking lower than predicted in August. She added that all five ACF Corps reservoirs were below normal, with each releasing minimum discharge.

The hot dry summer has also taken a toll on crops and livestock. Due to withering fescue and a near complete loss of corn, farmers in northwest Georgia and northeast Alabama had to truck in feed for their cows from Tennessee, crop and soil specialist Pam Knox reported.

Wildflowers in Georgia: Now there’s a book for that For nearly a decade, there’s been serious talk about creating an official book about Georgia wildflowers. Now it’s a reality, thanks to State Botanical Garden Botanist Linda Chafin, wellknown nature photographers Hugh and Carol Nourse and the University of Georgia Press. With 777 entries, full-color photographs and a color-grouped index of thumbnails, the “Field Guide to the Wildflowers of Georgia and Surrounding States” is a musthave for hikers, photographers, serious gardeners and plant enthusiasts.

By Pamela A. Keene The man behind the success of Flowery Branch’s Antebellum, consistently ranked in the top 100 restaurants in the United States, has gone international. With the opening of the first Peyton’s Pie Company in Suwanee off Peachtree Industrial Boulevard, chef Nicholas St. Clair has perfected the real Italian pizza. The restaurant is named for Nick and Alison’s son Peyton. “We’ve worked to create the perfect dough using specialty flours the way the Italians do their Marguerita pizzas, just the right type of sauce and fresh mozzarella cheese baked for less than two minutes in an 800-degree wood-fired pizza oven,” St. Clair said. “For almost the past two years, I’ve wanted to open a pizza restaurant, but I didn’t want to do it until I had created the right recipe, not like any other pizzas I’ve found in the area.”

St. Clair did extensive research about everything from the types of flour that works best with his specially built woodfired pizza oven to finding the right kinds of tomatoes – “not too acidic, not too sweet.” Dough is fresh made daily, using the Italian process, and lightly shaped and stretched to create a thin, crispy crust.

The restaurant in Suwanee is a combination dine-in take-out, with a handful of community picnic tables and a few café tables out front. Each 14-inch pizza is made to order; diners can select from nearly a dozen fresh toppings to add to the

Beer & Wine Festival added to Taste of Gainesville

By Jane Harrison Attendees at the annual Taste of Gainesville can sample craft brews and wine with dinner. The Sept. 24 event at Lake Lanier Olympic Park will feature a Craft Beer and Wine Festival along with traditional fare from local restaurants and caterers.

The early autumn dinner on the plaza overlooking Lake Lanier attracts hundreds of diners to taste restaurateurs’ specialties.

The Lake Lanier Rowing Club, which has put on the gala for about 20 years, decks the plaza with white tablecloths and flowers. Local musicians set the mood with pop tunes and classical guitar.

The occasion has long been considered a “must attend” evening on the lake, attracting hundreds of return diners and newcomers. Proceeds benefit the LLRC Junior Crew.

The office will be open from 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., starting with a formal ribbon cutting. Gainesville staff Janet Westervelt, outreach manager, and Dale Caldwell, headwaters

The headwaters office includes a professional-grade laboratory for water testing.

Keene As a child in the late 1950s, Trish Fitzgerald and her family knew many of the islands of Lake Lanier by name. “Over the years, it seems like many of those names have been changed and I want to do something about that,” says the avid boater who still enjoys the lake. “We were members of University Yacht Club and spent every weekend on the lake. But now that I’m up here again, it seems like many of the islands have been renamed, and the old names have been lost.”

Fitzgerald said she hopes to spearhead an island-naming project around the lake to standardize identification. After approaching the Corps of Engineers and the Lake Lanier Association – both declined to take on the project – she has decided to reach out to the public for assistance.

“I even met with the Lake Lanier Con-

vention and Visitors Bureau,” she said.

“They said it was a great idea, but that they did not have the resources to take this on.”

Fitzgerald, who admits to “not being real good with a computer,” said she would like to develop some sort of contest to standardize the names of various islands around the lake. She has compiled a list of island names that seem to have stuck, but she has another list of islands with several names that she said need to be standardized. “I think it will help with navigation and people finding their way around the lake,” she said. “I hope that people will come forward to help with this project. It will be good for the lake.”

Day Use Parks The Corps operates 35 day use parks at Lakke Lanier. Facilities range from parks with boat ramps to those with designated swimming areas, picnic tables, shelters and playgrounds.

Wake for Warriors: A life-changing weekend at Lake Lanier

By Pamela A. Keene For Marine veterans Tatiana and Phillip McGill the mid-August trip to Lake Lanier with Wake for Warriors was like a second honeymoon. The couple was in the process of moving from Okinawa to Braunfels, Texas, with their two children to wrap up their tours of duty when they heard about Wake for Warriors, a program begun by former Marine David Deep to assist veterans with overcoming the wounds – physical and psychological – of war.

“This came at a time when we could use a little break,” said Tatiana, who was a postal clerk during her time in the Marines.

Phillip, an explosive ordinance disposal technician, had been wounded while deployed to the Middle East. He has undergone numerous surgeries and received a medical discharge from the Marines. “With what’s been going on – transitions to civilian life, moving back to Texas to be near family, and coping with the day to day, what Wake for Warriors has

done for us has been amazing.”

The couple were part of a group of eight couples who came to Lanier through Wake for Warriors to have a little down time. Against the backdrop of learning to wake surf, wake board, paddleboard, kayak and sail, the couples spent four days and three nights in area hotels. All-day boating and picnicking on Friday and Saturday took place from home base at Gainesville Marina.

All the boats – there were five this time – were donated by volunteers for the weekend. Volunteer coaches and support team members worked with the veterans and their spouses to teach them how to wakeboard.

“So many of these veterans have a hard time when they come home, and this is a way for them to feel some sense of accomplishment,” said Dave Deep, who founded the organization.

Deep, with 28 years of service in the U.S. Marines, lives on Lake Arrowhead in Northwest Georgia, but travels across the country put-

ting on events for veterans and their families. He created Wake for Warriors as a 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization to help fund these outings and programs for veterans. In addition to his own money, he is supported by sponsorships and donations from businesses and individuals.

On the Saturday afternoon of the weekend, veterans and their spouses, along with coaches and volunteers, took a lunch break from the morning’s activities. Tatiana was so enthusiastic about learning to wakeboard. “If you had told me last month that I’d be doing this, I would have never believed you,” she said, a smile stretching from ear to ear. “The coaches are so amazing; they get right in the water with you and I can’t believe how patient they are.”

Phillip, who is the contemplative half of the couple, has a look of accomplishment as he sits down to enjoy a sandwich. He got up on the board fairly easily. “It’s been pretty easy for me to pick up athletic stuff,” he said. “I could do this all the time, especially because I don’t have to think about things for a while. It has been a good getaway.”

Blairsville offers old, new and lots of Blue Ridge Memories of racing with friends in old Fords over this winding mountain road out of Dahlonega up to Neel Gap and down into the old town of Blairsville, Georgia nearly 50 years ago flooded my brain. I remember twirling with all the pretty mountain girls at square dances being called by my old friend Duel Lockaby, who died racing these roads one night.

I quickly realized that many things were new, but much of the past is still woven into the picturesque fabric of the Blue Ridge Mountains and will never disappear. Though slightly wider in some places, the old road is practically the same, and the rock building at Neel Gap where the Appalachian Trail crosses Blood Mountain is still an oasis for youthful dreamers who hike this famous trek and often leave their hiking shoes in the “Shoe Tree.”

On my return to the main highway, I stopped by Vogel State Park www.georgiastateparks.org/ vogel to photograph the lake and the scenic waterfalls below the lake spillway. I also visited the Byron Herbert Reece Farm and Heritage Center on US 129 a mile north of Vogel State Park. Several buildings have been saved that the local farmer and writer Reece used during his lifetime. The displays provide detailed information about farm life in the early 20th century, but they also teach about Reece’s three books of poetry and two novels.

No trip to this area would be complete without grabbing a bag of the best boiled peanuts in North Georgia at the old Sunrise Grocery (www.sunrisegrocery. com). This country store started in the early 1920s, and is like walking through a history lesson.

It was then time for me to find a great place to stay in a natural area away from the main roads,

Farther down the mountain, I took a detour along a narrow winding, gravel road that ended in a small parking lot. I carefully descended and then climbed along a well-traveled path past the lower falls to an elevated platform to view one of the most beautiful waterfalls in North Georgia. The Upper Helton Creek Falls cascades more than 50 feet into a picturesque pool that is also a great fishing hole for trout. but with great hospitality and a tasty breakfast! I found the perfect spot built into a hillside and unseen by passing tourists. It is owned and operated by Bonnie and Paul Hayward, who are two retired school teachers with a great intellect and warm hearts.

On my way back into town, I had to stop to taste the nectar of my youth “Corn Liquor” or Moonshine as most people call it at Grandaddy Mimms Moonshine Museum and Distillery www.grandaddymimms.com. It still lights up your insides from the the first sip.

Since breakfast is best at the B&B, I found a lunch restaurant with local products that will make you want to come there everyday ... if you can find a parking spot!

The Sawmill Place (www.thesawmillplace.com) is a family run eatery that features fresh, seasonal, local foods that will excite

your taste buds! Also, the homemade desserts are worth saving space to enjoy.

In the evening, I would suggest a nice seat at Michaelee’s Italian Life Cafe’ (italianlifecaffe.com) on the square across from the historic old courthouse for some excellent Italian cuisine and atmosphere. After a great eating experience, go downstairs to visit their dessert and coffee bar for fresh Italian spumoni and other treats!

If this is your first visit to the Blairsville area, a visit to Georgia’s highest mountain is a must!

Brasstown Bald is 4,784 feet tall and part of the Wolfpen Ridge which is a main spine of the Blue

Ridge Mountains. A 360 degree view allows visitors to see Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee and South Carolina on a clear day. You can shop at the gift shop and tour a visitor center that focuses on Georgia history, geology and the natural world. Just the view is worth the trip!

My favorite part of this trip was playing 36 holes of golf at the gorgeous but demanding Butternut Creek Golf Course (www.butternutcreekgolf.com).

This picturesque course features rolling valley holes and challenging slopes with mountain views from all 18 holes. Each hole is unique – none remotely similar to another, and I guarantee that one round won’t be enough for you!

On the second floor above the pro shop is The View Grill, which is the perfect location to wind down with a cool beverage, relive your game and watch the sunset over the golf course. It’s a casual bar/grill with tasty sandwiches and more.

Regardless of the reason you might come to Blairsville and Union County, you will be immersed in the raw beauty of the Chattahoochee National Forest.

Breathtaking views, natural waterfalls, wild descending streams, lakes, hiking trails, golf, great food, history and warm wonderful people are everywhere! It is an inspiring place to visit or live, and a perfect tapestry of nature and modern adventures woven into the ageless Blue Ridge Mountains!

Another abandoned houseboat removed from Lake Lanier The Lake Lanier Association, in coordination with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and Hall County, removed a second abandoned houseboat using state allocated funds for abandoned vessel removal on the lake.

This second vessel, known as Houseboat 44, was taken out of the water on Friday, Aug. 26.

The houseboat had been sitting on the shoreline close to lake marker 44 since the
