By Pamela A. Keene High winds and rough water from Hurricane Irma caused damage around Lake Lanier, including some of the lake’s marinas.

Overall, the damage was manageable, with much less dock and boat damage than might have happened.

Aqualand was probably the hardest-hit, especially its breakwater Blue Ridge Dock with houseboat slips.

“We had minimal boat damage, except that one houseboat sank, but within a couple of days it had been floated and removed from the water,” said Patrick Kinney, general manager of Aqualand Marina.

“Blue Ridge Dock had heavy damage with broken and twisted dock fingers because of the sustained winds. It’s not going to be a quick fix because there will insurance and corporate decisions to be made.”

Kinney said that most of the houseboats have been relocated within Aqualand Marina; a few tenants have moved their boats to other marinas.

Clean-up has been ongoing to remove the downed trees on the

144-acre marina property. The marina lost power for about two days.

“On the positive side, we responded quickly to remove trees from across the road and blow off all the roads so that owners could get to their boats,” Kinney said.

“Several members have emailed and complimented us for our quick response. And the next Saturday, we still hosted our Member Appreciation Party. It was the most attended we’ve ever had.”

Holiday Marina and Lazy

Days at Holiday Marina fared much better, most likely because they are located within Big Creek and don’t directly face the main channel.

“One dock, Pier 13, in Lazy Days broke loose, but it was put back within two days,” said Alex Laidlaw with Westrec. “We had few downed trees and about 30 hours without power.”

Gainesville Marina notified its tenants the Friday before Irma moved through North Georgia, asking them to remove any unsecured items from their finger

docks and boats and make sure their dock lines were secure.

“Our crews checked all the docks and boats over the weekend before Irma arrived to ensure that boats were secure,” said Philip Burton, general manager of Gainesville Marina.

“We had no boat damage and the marina as a whole didn’t lose power, although Docks 7, 8 and 9 were out for a time. Dock D ‘kissed’ Dock E and they lost power but everything has been resecured and the marina was cleaned up pretty quickly.”

Houseboat fire quickly contained at Port Royale

By Pamela A. Keene A houseboat at the dock caught fire in mid-September in Port Royale, but the quick response from the Forsyth County Fire Department helped contain the blaze.

No one was injured, but the houseboat and a pontoon boat in the same slip were destroyed. Several nearby vessels experienced heat damage. The cause of the fire is under in-

vestigation.

When the 75-foot 1992 Lazy Days houseboat in an uncovered slip caught fire Saturday, September 16, around 9 a.m. the owner was nearby.

He and others on the dock used fire extinguishers and ondock water hoses until the fire department arrived. By that time, the owner’s pontoon boat in the same slip had also caught fire.

Several nearby craft sustained

heat damage, as did the dock.

“The Forsyth County Fire Department was on scene very quickly,” said Brent Pearson with Port Royale. “The boat was docked close to shore and the fire department had no trouble getting down to it.

They used water from their truck to extinguish the fire.

We towed the boat and had it out of the water around lunchtime.”

Broadening its reach; LLA seeks comments, new members

By Pamela A. Keene The Lake Lanier Association is embarking on a concerted marketing campaign to double its membership in the next three years.

The board recently hired Forum Communications of Gainesville to assist with the development of a marketing and communications plan to achieve that goal.

“We’ll be doing a variety of surveys and outreach from late September until some time in October to determine a number of factors,” said John Barker with the board of the Lake Lanier Association. “We want to understand who our members are and who they aren’t – and why – and what they expect from the association. Forum will use that information to develop a strategic marketing plan for us that we an-

ticipate will help us grow our membership significantly in the next three years.”

The association will be surveying members via email and doing clipboard surveys are area marinas and restaurants. The brief one-on-one face-to-face surveys will include questions about lake usage, demographics such as age and interactions with Lake Lanier, and other information that will be analyzed by Forum to create a plan.

It is expected that the research will be complete by mid-October and the agency will make a presentation to the association sometime in the first quarter of 2018.

The organization currently has approximately 2,000 members.

The Southern Fishing Report by Ken Sturdivant

A sampling of fishing information and tips from area guides Lake level: Down 5.7 feet Clarity: Creeks stained, main lake clear Temperature: 70s

Bass Fishing Bass report: Well another period of unseasonably warm weather is in the books. The lake temperature came up about three degrees recently and the level has dropped more than .3 feet. Both the main lake and creeks in the lower lake are sporting clear water. The fish are very near where they will be as the water cools, specifically at the mouths of creeks around points and humps. However, they have pulled out deeper with this warm weather over the past several days.

There continues to be a good schooling bite just after daylight in the mouths of the major creeks around points and humps. After that, we have been focusing on location more similar to a late summer pattern namely, places very close to deep water.

We have been throwing three things most days all day: top water, swimbaits and a fluke. A Sebile and a Chug Bug have

worked well on schooling fish.

After the schooling bite slows, we have been running steeper points and humps close to deep water as a general rule. Stay back off of these locations farther than you normally would, as you may find some schooling through the day over the deeper water as you approach these humps and points.

Be on alert as soon as you take the boat off plane, as the schooling can initiate quickly after your arrival.

With a cool front forecasted early this month I look for things to change significantly. I anticipate the fish to be back up shallower on these same places I am referencing. Once the water gets back to the mid 70s or so, we should start seeing some outstanding top water and swimbait action through the month of October.

Striper Fishing Striper fishing is fair. High pressure, blue bird skies, record high temperatures and very little

wind recently have to contributed to difficult fishing conditions.

I cannot remember a water temperature of 83 degrees in late September. The stripers are just not aggressive during the day.

However, there has been an early morning and late afternoon bite but from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. the stripers have not been biting.

We may get a break with a cold front which should “fire up” the stripers but until the water cools and the lake turns over we can expect tough fishing conditions to continue.

We are primarily fishing down rods and weighted free lines with Herring and medium minnows.

One morning they want small baits and the next day they only want large herring.

Do not try figure out why. Just take both and see what works.

The fish are scattered from Browns Bridge to the dam on points, main lake pockets, creek channels and river channels. If the fish are not biting your down rod try deploying a couple of free lines and move at .5 to .8 mph.

You can also try to get a reaction bite by trolling umbrella rigs or lead core.

The key is to try something different. Do not waste a lot of time in any one spot or any one technique. We are rigging our down rods with 6 to 8 foot of Seaguar fluorocarbon 12-pound test leaders with a 2 ounce weight and a #1 or #1/0 Gamakatsu Octopus hook for Herring and a #4 Octopus for the medium minnows.

Florida repeats objections to Special Master’s report

By Jane Harrison As expected, Florida again urged the Supreme Court to reject Special Master Ralph Lancaster’s recommendations in a federal lawsuit against Georgia over water in the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint river system. The court appointee in February recommended that justices dismiss the case due in part to Florida not involving the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the suit.

The Corps operates five dams on the rivers that flow from the North Georgia mountains to the Gulf of Mexico at Apalachicola Bay. Lake Lanier is the largest of those reservoirs.

In its Oct. 2013 lawsuit, Florida alleges that Georgia hoards water on the rivers and causes environmental and economic harm to the oyster-based economy of Apalachicola, which relies on fresh water flow to nourish oyster bed. The Sunshine State seeks to limit Georgia’s water consumption and get reparations for collapse of oyster fisheries during the drought of 2012. The court appointed Lancaster to oversee preliminary proceedings in Oct. 2014. Lancaster told Florida attorneys they would need to prove that capping Georgia’s water use would relieve water woes downstream.

His report concludes Florida was remiss in not including the Corps in the lawsuit and that cutting Georgia’s water use would not help Florida because the Corps ultimately controls the release of water through its dams. He recommended justices deny Florida’s requests and dismiss the suit. The court usually follows through on its appointees’ recommendations, but occasionally makes exceptions.

Florida’s Aug. 30 response is the latest round of exceptions and rebuttals in the legal action that has cost the states more than $40 million each. Georgia officials rejoiced about Lancaster’s report, which followed another Georgia water war victory when the Corps’ granted Georgia all the water it requested in the Corps operation manual for dams on the rivers.

Part of Florida’s beef with the Special Master’s report centers on a Corps’ statement in the water control manual that it could consider changes in operations pending a Supreme Court decision.

Florida concludes that the court should return the case to the Special Master for further proceedings. It is unclear when justices will consider the case. It does not appear on its session calendar for this month.

However, the October 2017 term extends well into 2018.

LAKE LANIER OLYMPIC PARK Taste of Gainesville rescheduled for April

By Jane Harrison The first Saturday of Autumn came and went without a Lake Lanier tradition. The Lake Lanier Rowing Club rescheduled its annual Taste of Gainesville at Lake Lanier Olympic Park for April.

The al fresco dining rite of fall has drawn thousands for more than 20 years to sample restaurant specialties on the lakeside plaza.

The classy, but casual fundraiser for LLRC junior rowers seats patrons at tables adorned with white tablecloths and fresh flowers.

Local musicians set the tone with

soft rock and pop tunes.

“There were major changes on the (LLRC) executive board (in July) and no one was on the bandwagon quick enough to make it as good as last year’s,” said LLRC Junior Coach Tracy Mayo. She added that only two members from last year’s dinner organizers were available to help and the new board members lacked the experience to rustle up restaurateurs for vittles, sell tickets, and set the scene. LLRC officers did not respond in time for this story.

Additionally, the junior coach

indicated that University of Georgia home football games in September upset the dinner schedule.

“So many Georgia fans go to home games,” she said. Plus Taste of Flowery Branch was set for the same date originally planned for the Gainesville’s event, Sept. 23.

Mayo said the Gainesville dinner “has not been canceled but moved to spring of 2018” in April. Diners who missed it will get a second helping next year: LLRC also plans a fall Taste of Gainesville.

By Jane Harrison Eighty teams competed in the annual Hong Kong Atlanta Dragon Boat Festival races at Lake Lanier Olympic Park Sept.

9. About a dozen local schools, companies and clubs sent dragon boaters to race against their counterparts from across metro Atlanta. The sunny late summer day brought thousands of spectators to sample exotic cuisine, see Asian performers in the opening ceremony, and cheer for their favorite teams. The event, directed by the Atlanta Hong Kong Economic & Trade Office and run by

the Lanier Canoe & Kayak Club, offered spectators a glimpse of what to expect in next year’s ICF Dragon Boat World Championships.

Set for Sept. 12-16, the international races are expected to bring 2,000 athletes and coaches and as many as 10,000 spectators to LLOP. High level athletes in the fiercely competitive world championship races will power the long boats more swiftly on the Olympic channel than the recreational boaters who paddle mainly for fun in the annual festival.

My concern for hurricanes came true last month I hope you read my column from last month.

Now you know why I was so concerned about the ramping up of hurricanes in September. What an incredible month of storms!

People have been asking me if it’s global warming making the storms more powerful.

My answer has been 100 percent, “No.” In the Atlantic last month we had no wind shear from El Nino. We had no Sahara dust. We had very warm ocean temperatures but nothing extraordinary. When the tropical waves rolled off the west coast of Africa, they entered a perfect environment to become massive and dangerous hurricanes.

Hurricane Harvey was pushed farther west into the Gulf of Mexico. It was not an overly impressive hurricane but when we saw the environment over Texas, we began to worry. There were two massive high pressure areas over the country. One was in the West and the other in the East. Harvey was going to move in between them.

We knew it was going to stall with nowhere to go. Indeed it did and more than 48 inches of rain caused flooding to 20 percent of the Houston metro area. Ten percent of the buildings and homes in the Houston metro had water damage. Gas prices still remain high but they are no doubt artificially inflated now.

After Harvey, along came Irma. Another Atlantic crossing from West Africa into ideal conditions brought Irma to a

strength rarely seen. The European computer models, the most reliGlenn able, was bringing the storm through the Burns Caribbean, hitting just about every island posLanier sible. We knew it would Outlook eventually turn north but we did not know exactly when or where. That turn prediction was extremely important in determining the impacts on our local weather. With each model run that came in the center was being pushed farther and farther west. North Georgia would now be on the northeast quadrant, the most powerful side of the storm, as the center moved into Alabama.

As wind and rain began to increase here, trees began to fall. Hundreds and hundreds of them crashing onto buildings and homes. During the height of the storm most of us were seeing winds of 30-40 mph sustained. However, the gusts were in the 50 mph range. The two strongest wind gusts were 64 mph at Hartsfield Jackson International Airport and a 55 mph gust in Habersham County. Many people were without power for almost a week.

Then, along came Maria. Winds sustained at 175 mph with gusts to 215 mph.

It looked like a buzz saw cruising into the Caribbean. Puerto Rico took the brunt of the storm, knocking out power to the entire island of more than 3.5 million. Many nearby islands had catastrophic damage and nine people lost their lives. This was the worst hurricane season since 2005.

Kayaking is a great way to learn basic boating This small watercraft continues to grow in popularity with people of all ages. They are easy to handle and most affordable. As with many things in the outdoor world there have been many innovations in the kayak industry.

We now have a more personal boating option and gear to go with them, more than ever before.

The first kayaks were built by the Inuit tribe in the Alaskan Territory. They used animal bones for the framework and then covered the frame with animal skin.

The design came stateside and were built with wooden frames covered with canvas and then waterproofed. The one we had was eight feet long and weighed about 30 pounds. I used it for fishing, as it was easy to portage to another lake where the bass were known to bite quicker. Today they are a great boat to teach younger kids how to handle a boat. They come as a single or two person craft.

They handle easily when using a double paddle or a conventional canoe paddle. Later models now have pedals you can pump, so your hands are free for fishing.

Shore Sweep rules! Perfect weather, volunteers and sponsors spell success

By Pamela A. Keene The action began right before Hurricane Irma came calling at Lake Lanier. In fact, some early collection activities were postponed for this year’s Lake Lanier Association Shore Sweep. But a little bad weather only fired up the group’s volunteers even more for the late-September clean-up event.

Between 800 and 1,000 volunteers, both as advance collectors and day-of participants, collected what may be a new record for trash and debris around the lake.

“I’d say that Hurricane Irma had some effect on our increase in collections this year,” said Bonny Putney, board member with the association and long-time chair of Shore Sweep. “And we had excellent support from our volunteers and groups like the Lake Lanier boaters, the Atlanta Sail and Power Squadron, and Marine Max.” Putney said that the total collection will likely exceed 40 tons this year. “We had at least 13 tons at War Hill Park, plus more than 10 tons that were collected in advance,” she said. “And we had more volunteers and more boats than in the past, so this was a really good year.” Being a good year can be a positive or a negative. For instance, it’s very positive when the association logs big numbers in volunteers and trash collection. But, if there’s that much trash and debris around the lake, it’s not a good thing.

“It continues to amaze me the number of people who come to enjoy the lake, then just leave their trash behind,” said Tammy Wright, captain for the second year at Big Creek Park. “And we see it all the time. They’ll come down to boat or to enjoy the beaches and water, and then walk away without cleaning up after themselves. It would be ideal if everyone who came to the lake did their part all year long. Then maybe we wouldn’t need Shore Sweep. But until that time …”

Over the past three decades, the event has evolved from a oneday trash pickup followed by a centrally located picnic and celebration starting mid-afternoon.

These days, the work begins long before Shore Sweep day, with board members and volunteers working with sponsors to line up dumpsters, barges and collection boats.

About 10 years ago, board members began an active campaign to attack the trash problem by dividing the lake into geographic zones, setting up advance scouting and even creating designated areas for trash and debris to be collected and deposited several weeks before the actual Shore Sweep Day. In recent years, the group has designated a dozen or so day-of collection sites, each with a volunteer captain. Sites supplied trash bags, T-shirts and collection tools and most had a fleet of boats at the ready to take volunteers to

various locations around the lake.

The work takes place from 8 a.m. until midday, then volunteers are treated to lunch and a chance to socialize.

In addition to Shore Sweep, the association has been actively involved in the removal of abandoned vessels and derelict docks that could pose safety or waterquality issues.

This year, the US Army Corps of Engineers provided support in the way of donating 300 pairs of heavy-duty work gloves and other equipment to help with collection.

The Corps was also scheduled to remove two abandoned docks near Pemmican Run the week after the event.

Many of the group’s volunteers are long-time members and supporters of the Lake Lanier Association. They help out throughout the year with the association’s many projects, including Adopta-Lake, solar light program and the Property Owners Pledge.

“We can always use more volunteers for our projects,” Putney said. “If you’re interested, we can certainly find a place for you.”

On a mission: Hyltons embrace vision of Ark on Lake Lanier Shore Lines From the fascinating to the remarkable, Lake Lanier harbors many personalities and places along its shores. Lakeside presents “Shore Lines” – stories about people who live, work and play around the lake and the places that make the area special.

By Pamela A. Keene t all started with having their desire to purchase their dream lakeside home turned down more than a dozen years ago. But something about the two-plus acre farmhouse property kept beckoning Jeff and Alycea Hylton to Lake Lanier from their home on the other side of Gainesville.

“We really fell in love with the property from the moment we first saw it,” says Jeff, now an executive and financial adviser with Merrill Lynch in Gainesville. “At the time, the current owners, who also owned another home, didn’t really want to sell it, although Jeff tried to negotiate. Then in early 2006, Jeff’s father in Augusta was diagnosed with brain cancer, and any plans to purchase the property were set aside.

“I made a deal with God when we moved back to Augusta to take care of my father,” Jeff said.

“I told God that I was walking away from the property and if He wanted me to have it, He’d have to bring it back to me. About six months later, we got an email from the owners of the property.

They had decided they didn’t need two mortgages so they were willing to sell it, and they came to us first. We jumped at the chance.”

Jeff and Alycea spent the next six months planning and implementing major renovations with the guidance of Alycea’s father Dick Young, who was a contrac-

tor at the time. The renovations included updating the then10,000-square-foot house’s layout, kitchen, bathrooms and common areas. The couple developed the overall design and worked with architects in Atlanta and, in April 2007, they moved into the main house with their three children – Brittany Claire, Brooks and Bennett – and began a journey of faith that has connected them with people around the globe.

The family envisioned it as a working farm and soon purchased two goats that became seven goats, two alpacas and 15 chickens. They renovated the pool and pool house and created a lakeside fire pit for entertaining.

The end of the summer in 2008 was “memorable” for the family in many ways. “The stock market crashed, the lake was down over 20 feet, and while we were on vacation at Hilton Head over Labor Day, we got a call that the house was on fire,” he said wryly. Two rooms and part of the garage were destroyed; the cause was spontaneous combustion as a result of cleaning materials that had been stored. “Needless to say, it was very disorienting.”

Within six months, the house had been cleaned and partially repaired, but not rebuilt. Jeff and Alycea felt like the house needed to be expanded, and since it sounded like a crazy idea, they didn’t do anything at first. They put up temporary sheetrock to

“People couldn’t understand why we wanted to build more bedrooms and baths,” Jeff said.

“The economy was in a downturn and the market was in the tank, but we just kept having the feeling that we needed to build more bedrooms, even though we already had 10 or 11. People thought we had lost out minds.”

“It’s a place of peace and refuge for people from around the world,” Alycea said. “And we are always hearing comments about the property and the house. One older man told us that the house has ‘happy walls,’ and I guess

that’s true. It certainly is a spiritual place, a gathering place where good things happen.”

So how did the property become known as Ark on Lake Lanier? “Alycea’s mother Brenda Young gave me this little figurine of Noah’s ark with animals surrounding it,” Jeff said. “She told me that I reminded her of Noah.

And I certainly felt like Noah … remodeling this huge house and adding bedrooms at a time that didn’t seem to make sense. And since we had farm animals for a while and were looking for a name for the place it just stuck – Ark on Lake Lanier.”

Even though people from around the world have found their way to the shores of Lake Lanier and the Ark, Jeff said that he’s amazed people right here in Northeast Georgia don’t know about it.

“We’re not a Christian retreat center, and we never set out with this dream. I never thought when I bought it that we’d ever rent it out, but it continues to evolve,” Jeff said. “If it weren’t for our relationship with God, we never would have had this place, but it’s our mission to give back to the community and to provide a place for rejuvenation and a respite from the day-to-day world.”

After Irma, guidance for your yards and trees With winds topping 50 miles per hour with Atlanta’s first-ever tropical storm, Irma, even if you didn’t lose branches or trees, your landscape took a pretty serious beating.

Things weren’t so bad at our Flowery Branch home. My 6-foot hybrid tea roses suffered a few broken canes and others were almost uprooted with the strong winds and the softer-than-usual rain-soaked ground. Two-thirds of my three-foot Miss Huff lantana by the driveway was blown off its roots and ended up down the street.

At my old neighborhood just a mile away, several neighbors had downed trees, yards full of broken-off branches and twisted trees. A 25-foot Leyland Cypress that had three trunks split and tumbled both into my own yard and into the neighbor’s yard. Fortunately, other than damaging two sections of fence, the falling evergreen’s trunks and branches missed both houses.

Edwards heads USCG National Waterway Watch program Local resident and Coast Guard Auxiliary member Joe Edwards has been appointed Branch Chief-Special Projects in the Prevention Directorate of the Auxiliary national organization.

Edwards has the responsibility to develop and deliver public programs to inform the boating, fishing, sailing and other groups about the America’s Wa- Edwards terway Watch (AWW) program.

The goal is to heighten awareness of suspicious activity near or on any body of water.

Each day citizens witness what may be threats to public safety or crimes being committed. Because they are not really sure, they tend to ignore what they have just seen.

The Coast Guard and its Reserve and Auxiliary components have developed the America’s Waterway Watch program to provide a means by which citizens

can report suspicious activity. It enlists the participation of those who live, work or play around America’s waterfront areas.

The program includes a National Response Center that provides 7/24 telephone availability of trained personnel to receive reports of suspicious activity. Edwards has been a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary for seven years. He has served in elected capacity with Flotilla 29 on Lake Lanier as the Vice Commander and as the Flotilla Commander.

He is retired from Honeywell Avionics in St Petersburg, Fla., where he grew up. Edwards later moved to the Atlanta area and again retired there from an AT&T data center.

By Pamela A. Keene More than 100 beers and 25 wines to sample – it’s time to head out to Lanier Islands for the first-ever Beer & Wine fest, taking place on Saturday, October 14, at LanierWorld.

“Our Legacy Wine Cruises have been so popular that we decided to bring the concept ashore and supersize it,” said Missy Burgess, director of public relations and sponsorships at the resort.

“We’ll showcase beers and wines from local breweries, regional wineries and national/international beverage producers in this special event for our 21 and older fans of the islands.

And best of all, we’ll be showing two great SEC football games on our high-definition five-story-tall screen and entertainment, so it’s going to be a

great event.”

The event takes place from 1-5 p.m. and is limited to 2,000 guests. The band Whispering Gypsies plays from noon until 4 p.m.

SEC games featuring the University of Georgia Bulldogs vs. University of Missouri and Auburn University Tigers vs. the LSU Tigers will be broadcast as well.

LanierWorld restaurants will also be open.

The Islands will broadcast SEC games on Saturdays and Falcons games on Sunday through the end of the season.

Provided by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers The Corps of Engineers welcomes you to beautiful Lakke Sidney Lanier. Located just 35 miles northeast of Atlanta, the lake offers some of the finest camping opportunities in the South. The Corps operates 7 campgrounds at Lake Lanier. Camping enthusiasts may enjoy the luxuries of fully developed areas with water and electrical hookups or “rough it” at designated primitive areas. Most campgrounds have parrk attendants on duty to assist our visitors. Camping in undesignated areas such as on the lake’s shoreline and islands is prohibited.

Day Use Parks The Corps operates 35 day use parks at Lakke Lanier. Facilities range from parks with boat ramps to those with designated swimming areas, picnic tables, shelters and playgrounds.

All day use parks close daily at 10 p.m.

Boat lauunching is allowed at all hours unless otherwise posted. Alcoholic beverages are prohibited in all parks.

Picnic Shelters Picnic shelters are availabble at several Corps’ parks around the lake. They can be reserved for a fee. Call the Lake Lanier Management Office at 770-9459531.

A special place in South Georgia: the Georgia Veterans State Park A trip into the southern part of Georgia recently led me through the sleepy town of Cordele to an exciting destination that I had forgotten. The Lake Blackshear Resort and Golf Club is located on the Central and Western portion of the Georgia Veterans State Park. The combination of these two facilities offers enough exciting and relaxing opportunities to entertain anyone for weeks!

Even before reaching the entrance into the park, part of the gorgeous 18-hole golf course can be seen. This championship course, designed by Denis Griffiths, is rated four stars by Golf Digest Magazine, and is one of the most affordable places to swing a club in the Peach State.

During the first 1/4 mile beyond the entrance, visitors cross an old railroad track belonging to the SAM Shortline Excursion Train. It runs through the park on its way from Cordele to Plains, allowing riders to see an antique telephone museum, Habitat for Humanity’s Global Village, President Jimmy Carter’s boyhood farm and other attractions on scheduled trips.

The Georgia Veterans State Park was established as a memorial to U.S. veterans from all wars. It has one of the most interesting military museums that I have ever seen ... with uniforms, weapons, medals and other items from the Revolutionary War through both Gulf Wars. On the outside, one is stunned by the presence of one of the last B-29 bombers in existence and an extremely rare Navy Sea Fury jet fighter from the Korean War era.

Additionally, numerous antique armored vehicles are on display, and a nearby open field is maintained for flying remote-controlled, model airplanes.
